Girls flocked around me like black chicks. One of them said, "Your mama don't braid your hair!" So they began to do it. Tiny loving fingers tied knots beyond quick repair in my pale hair, which one child compared to string. Later, I thought of their mothers off working, as a group of girls and boys tried to climb i nto my lap for stories.
