The new poet laureate

Call it the triumph of the outsider.

Kay Ryan has been named the new poet laureate of the United States. It’s a powerful vindication of the woman who, in her undergraduate days, was turned down for membership at her university’s poetry club. Her fellow poets at UCLA, apparently, considered her too independent.
