Video: Previewing the ‘new economy’
By John Yemma | 04.06.09
The recession will end. A new economy will emerge. When and how? Those are the big questions. In the premiere issue of the Monitor weekly, Washington correspondent Peter Grier outlines “Ten Ways the new economy will look different.” Peter sat down with me for a preview of his report, which appears in the issue dated April 12.

I wish someone would trumpet the need to drastically overhaul America’s patent system. Yes we are a nation of innovators. But if you can’t afford to apply for a patent or you can’t wait the four years it takes to have a patent granted (assuming you don’t hit some bureaucratic chaff on the way)how can you want to work for your ideas? Having your intellectual property protected is the best motivation for innovators. And if we expect our economy to revive, we have to reward the innovators. An overhaul of the existing patent system is one of the best ways in which to do this.

Thank you for the excellent interview with Peter Grier and the excellent first new paper edition. I appreciate Peter’s insight that the United States economy is still bigger than the next four biggest combined — it’s not something you hear from other news analyses, and it’s really important to realize it. Thanks for the clear description of the economy.

Just want to let you know that I think the new weekly edition of the Monitor is a winner. I love the color, the arrangement, the articles. I sat with my first copy and read it for an hour straight. I waited until today to read Peter Grier’s article and to watch this video because I wanted to take my time with it. Good ideas, well expressed

It made me feel like getting in touch with Peter to say ‘thank you,” and I even tried because I found the article quite touching.

The advance peek at Peter Greier’s article for the inaugural Weekly on April 12 prompts me to hope there will be some occasional follow up stories on the 10 elements as they play out in the weeks and months ahead. Already I’m wondering just what innovation will stand out in our recovery like the canned fruit did in its day. It is often said that “This is not your father’s recession.” Seeing how and where the paths out of these current woods lead is like seeing history made. I’m glad that Peter and others will be the scribes to inform us and explain things along the way.
