Fall color beyond mums
| September 19, 2008 edition
Want more fall flowers than just chrysanthemums? Ask at a local nursery if these flowers are suitable for your climate: asters, boltonia, Japanese anemone, Joe-pye weed, hybrid goldenrod (there are many new ones that stay small), toadlily, and turtlehead (Chelone). All are perennials that will return each year to bright your yard year after year.

Judy, thanks for stopping by my blog. In my zone 7, my perennial salvias are still putting on a good show. The butterfly ginger is blooming and is oh, so fragrant. It may need to be lifted in colder climates. Mine survives the winter under a mound of mulch, along with my colocasias. Swamp sunflower is just starting to put on a fantastic display. The foliage of amsonia hubrechtii will turn a beautiful gold in a few weeks. Cameron
