Twitter feeling a little hectic lately? Help is on the way.

Twitter is a heck of a thing. It's a stellar search tool. It's a good way to follow friends. It helps foment revolution. It helps us donate to good causes. It helps us let our friends know exactly what we had for lunch. (Sushi, in case you're curious.) Twitter is also just about the noisiest place on the Web – a social networking tool that's always talking to us at a mile a minute.

But what if there was a way to organize the people you follow? That's the idea behind the Twitter Lists project, which was announced Wednesday on the official Twitter blog. Twitter Lists, says project lead Nick Kallen, will help users "curate" collections of their favorite tweeters. You might create a group for celebrity tweeters for instance, and another group for family. A third list might collect coworkers.

"Lists are public by default (but can be made private) and the lists you've created are linked from your profile," Kallen writes. "Other Twitter users can then subscribe to your lists. This means lists have the potential to be an important new discovery mechanism for great tweets and accounts."

The Lists function is currently in testing for a "select" group of users. No word yet on the general release date.

In September, Twitter announced it had teamed up for a two-way sync with MySpace – a functionality which allows MySpace users to syndicate their updates via tweet. As we wrote at the time, the team-up could be a big step forward in the way that one social network inter-meshes with the next.
