NEWSCOM
Google has replaced the "G" in its logo with the face of Mahatma Gandhi to celebrate his 140th birthday.
Today, the Google logo has replaced its “G” with a drawing of activist Mahatma Gandhi to celebrate what would be his 140th birthday.
Gandhi, born on Oct. 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India, is known as the influential leader of non-violent, civil disobedience campaigns to help India achieve independence from British rule. His peaceful tactics, which included fasting, boycotts, and collecting salt from the sea, eventually enabled India to gain independence from Britain in 1947. Earlier in his life, Gandhi worked at an Indian law firm, and campaigned to bring equality to the “untouchables” class in India.
A year after India was granted independence, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu extremist as he was entering a prayer meeting.
Every year, India celebrates Gandhi’s birthday – which is deemed a national holiday – on October 2. Worldwide, October 2 is marked as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Google employee Dennis Hwang is the person behind all these commemorative Google drawings, which he began designing while he was a Google intern in 2000 to mark holidays and worldwide events. Recently, Google paid homage to HG Wells, author of War of the Worlds, by adding crop circles and UFOs to its logo.

Next week, keep a lookout for the harvest moon
Look up at the sky on Oct. 4 and you’ll be greeted by the orange glow of the harvest moon. Every fall – either in September or October – the harvest moon appears right around the autumnal equinox.

“Generations to come, it may well be, will scarce believe that such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth.” — Albert Einstein (on Gandhi)
I do not agree with the action of Google. Mr: Ghandi made certain comments in South Africa about blacks that were very discriminating comments. It appears that in accordance to Ghandi warped views- Caucasians=Whites were the top of masses and intelligence , Indians middle tone skin were in the middle and blacks from Africa were inferior. Such views actually make Ghandi effords a ridicule since out of the result the nation was divided in two countries. Islam to the North and a series of Groups to the South to what is today known as India. Is also interesting that it has resulted on a race for nuclear weapons making the world more unstable and a den for Alqueda and the Taliban. I would not call such things successful for his contribution has let to even as much or worse situation than that of England in the region in my view.
@Hector
Can you please provide a link to what you assert about Ghandi. It is really hard for me to believe your assertion about Ghandi.
@Hector
Gandhi himself was of dark tones. It’s hard to believe he said all the things that you said
Hector needs to read the history about Indian Independence. It was Mohammad Ali Jinnah who wanted a separate state for muslims and not Gandhi. Get your facts straight before your scribble something! Watch the Oscar award winning movie “Gandhi” by Richard Attenborough.
Funny that posters here can’t research Hector’s comments for themselves, given that this article is partly about Google.

Google, Great job on the tribute to Gandhi!!
He was a great man and one needs to read about him and all that he did before criticizing him (as done by some on the posts above.)
omg u all dont know what yer talking about, war is an ugly thing, but it happened to save our country, to have liberty, and freedom. and its going on right now. sooo just get over it, war is never gonna really stop…
@ Hector
Gandhi also wanted the unity of Hindustan it was the Nehru (later 1st Prime Minister of India) who along with other more extreme Fascists Hindus tried to sideline Muslims.
You should also know that Gandhi suggested Quaid-e-Azam the Prime Ministry or Presidency of India after British Withdrawal and Nehru went bunkers hearing this. That was the last hope of Gandhi which was shattered by dear beloved Nehru of India.
You guys need to study more about South Asian History.
@Whatever: I like how your source has no sources. You link to a page (African National Congress: South Africa’s National Liberation Movement) as proof of someone else’s controversial comment. Yet the page you linked is itself controversial, and completely without references. Why not go make a Wikipedia page and not cite anything?
Please spell his name right its “GANDHI” not “GHANDI” please do not mispel or insult this great man’s name or his legacy, especially you hector. the comment you made is worth a picture post on failblog.org
The guy who is so critical of Gandhi, obviously has very poor insight into the life of Gandhi and his teachings. So please first educated your self then post insults, as u insult the Mahatma u insult every Indian alive,
thats nearly a Billion people
