Yes, it’s a graveyard smash, and yes, it caught on in a flash. But, as the blog pointed earlier today, it’s still one of the most annoying human artifacts ever produced. Here are 20 songs that, unlike “The Monster Mash,” won’t suck the blood out of your Halloween party.
1. “Black Magic Woman” by Santana*
2. “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
3. “I Put a Spell on You” by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (Creedence also has a good cover)
4. “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Rolling Stones
5. “Gallows Pole” by Led Zeppelin
6. “Creep” by Radiohead
7. “Zombie” by the Cranberries
8. “Born as Ghosts” by Rage Against the Machine
9. “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC
10. “Running with the Devil” by Van Halen
11. “Devil went down to Georgia” by The Charlie Daniels Band
12. “Season of the Witch” by Donovan
13. “Werewolves of London” by Warren Zevon
14. “Born Under a Bad Sign” by Albert King
15. “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Öyster Cult
16. “Friend of the Devil” by the Grateful Dead
17. “Psycho Killer” by The Talking Heads

20. “Voodoo Child” by Jimi Hendrix

*Update: An astute reader pointed out that “Black Magic Woman” was written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, who first recorded it in 1968, two years before Santana released it.

“Haunted House” sung by Gene Simmons in 1964. Or the current John Fogerty cover of that song.

my thoughts on the halloween top 20 songs list!
what?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? why isn’t there THRILLER, by MICHAEL JACKSON????? that is not relly fair, considering that THRILLER is the biggest selling album of all time. these are all good songs but THRILLER should have made the cut.
and another thing, i didn’t see any ROB ZOMBIE songs. i mean you tell me how often do you go through a haunted trail, or a haunted house and not hear a ROB ZOMBIE song?!?!?!?!?!? that’s what i don’t get.
so, those are my thought on this halloween song list. put some ROB ZOMBIE songs on the list. And of obviousely you have to have THRILLER,by MICHAEL JACKSON on the list as well. but this is over all a very good list of songs!!!!

Strange Brew, by Cream.
Love Potion Number 9, by the Searchers.
Dream Weaver, by Gary Wright.

Why “Zombie”? Like all or most of these others, that’s not a Halloween song at all - but more than that, if you look at the actual lyrics, it’s about “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland, the ongoing violence there and how it takes over people’s minds (mercifully, in the years since the song was written, things have improved). It doesn’t quite seem fair to take songs as “Halloween” songs just because they have a title and/or chorus that sounds suitably ghoulish, meanwhile missing the real point of the song…

Did you LISTEN to any of these songs, or did you just indiscriminately pick songs that had a remotely Halloweenish word in the title? Creep? Zombie? Psycho Killer? Come on. You should have stopped at 10.
