McCain uses Hillary in new ad. Will Obama use Romney?

By Jimmy Orr | 08.24.08

Early this morning (interestingly at 3 am), the McCain campaign launched a second ad using another Democrat’s words against Barack Obama. First, it was Obama’s new running mate, Joe Biden, and now it’s Hillary Clinton.

The new ad, entitled “Passed Over,” has clips of former presidential rival Senator Hillary Clinton raising concerns about Barack Obama.

“She won millions of votes, but isn’t on his ticket,” the hushed announcer says almost painfully. “Why? For speaking the truth on his plans.”

Tried and true

The formula is like the first one: Use the words of Obama’s former rivals against him. Yesterday it was a clip from Biden saying he would stand by his statement that Obama wasn’t ready for the job. That clip wasn’t from yesterday’s Obama-Biden rally, of course. It was from August, 2007, when they were competing for the same job.

Today’s commercial (see video below) shows Hillary Clinton in full campaign mode, questioning the specifics of Obama’s proposals, controversies, and negative campaigning tactics. Clinton was doing exactly what candidates do during the primary election.

Strategically, GOP strategist Todd Harris says, it’s a smart ad:

The McCain team is trying to drive the wedge even deeper between Obama and disaffected Hillary supporters. This is a not-so-subtle reminder and suggestion for them that their candidate — Hillary — and therefore by extension themselves, have not been welcomed into the Obama tent.

This is just the beginning. No doubt, when John McCain selects his running mate, we’ll see the same thing. Let’s say McCain chooses former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

We can make a draft campaign ad right now.  We’ll call it:

“Romney: McCain will destroy America”

The ad begins with dark and ominous music. Perhaps an eerie distorted piano.

Distressed and hushed announcer:

“What does Republican Mitt Romney think of John McCain’s energy plan? It’s disturbing…”

Romney clip (from January 27, 2008):

“His [McCain’s] plan calls for a new financial burden to be placed on people who are purchasing gasoline, or for that matter, natural gas to heat their homes or to cook in their homes.”

More distressed and more hushed announcer:

“As for McCain’s economic policies, Romney says McCain is a total failure.”

Romney clip (from December 22, 2007):

“He voted against the Bush tax cuts - twice. That’s failing Reagan 101.”

Even more distressed (perhaps hysterical) announcer:

“He even thinks that the State of Michigan is a total lost cause and should be given back to France.”

Romney clip (from January 10, 2008):

“I know that there are some people who think, as Sen. McCain did, he said, you know, some jobs are leaving Michigan and they’re not coming back. I disagree.”

Very concerned announcer:

”If Mitt Romney is worried that John McCain will hike your energy bills, oppose everything that Ronald Reagan stood for, and will start giving away states to foreign countries - shouldn’t you be worried too?”

72 days to go and counting…

It really doesnt matter to Romney. He will be president in 2012 regardless of who McCain picks.

2. Qbear | 08.24.08

McCain ad featuring Clinton

In 2 seconds Hillary and Bill can counter this ad.
Simply state Obama doesn’t speak for Hillary, and McCain SURE doesn’t speak for Hillary, Hillary speaks for Hillary.
ONE campaign offered Senator Clinton a prime time platform to speak, would McCain like to offer her an EQUAL forum in his Convention?

and John careful what you wish for

Democrats may use Romney in Obama ads, but not his trashing McCain in the Primaries. Romney promising to ALWAYS support Roe vs. Wade and saying he was gay-friendlier than Teddy Kennedy. The minute Romney is chosen as McCain’s VP, those clips will bring EVERY LGBT and Pro-Choice Republican and Independant to OBAMA/BIDEN

3. John S. | 08.24.08

Mitt Romney is the logical choice for VP. He is articulate, very bright, stays on topic, understands the economy, and is not beholden to special interests. He doesn’t have any skeletons in his closet and his family is a good example of family values.

One thing that bothers me about Pawlenty is he keeps disparaging his wife in attempts for humor.

4. Peter | 08.24.08

You left out, Romney saying “McCain is dishonest.” But other then that pretty good for being thrown together., just think what the DNC can do with lots of money and a team of people.

Now Who will McCain Pick They have shot their self in the foot when it comes to Romney McCain released attack ads on the Biden Pick because Biden said some things negitve toward Obama during the primary.

Romney called McCain dishonest during the Primary, and more. Huckabee came in second during the Primary not Romney., This wont go over well with the Christian Base. Romney and McCain would be the Super Rich ticket. In a middle Class Election. Biden will win working class Votes, Romney will remind the working class he is the guy that lays you off. Biden will be filmed going to church every sunday, Romney will be filmed going to a Mormon church, making the base of the GOP more then Uncomfortable.

So who should McCain pick?? Huckabee would energize the Base. Huckabee is veiwed as Middle class, Winning overwhelming working class voters. Huckabee didnt attack McCain during the primary. Huckabee can hold his own with anyone in debates. Huckabee = 1 house
Huckabee makes the most sense.

Huckabee Has 1 house

Huckabee is the most logical, despite what the bloggers that are on Romney’s payroll say. By the way, the radio host of Republican talk radio
they are on the Romney payroll too. Romney should learn he cant buy an election. He outspent every candidate during the primarys, even outspending Huckabee 6 to 1. Huckabee still got more delegates.

6. Andy | 08.24.08

Huckabee is a joke of a human being. If McCain picks Huckabee, this life long republican will vote for Obama. I hate Huckabee and everything he stands for. He has 14 ethical violations…. maybe he should pull the plank from his own eye before pulling the speck of dust from Romneys. The social conservatives are hate filled morons that drag down the inteligent portion of the republican party.

7. David | 08.24.08

While you make very good points, Peter, you are neglecting many of the very serious faults Huckabee brings…

This isn’t just the ‘rich guy with houses’ election, it’s also the corruption election - and all those gifts Huckabee took during his Governorship are going to paint him *squarely* in the currently wide-held view of corrupt Republicans.

I do not think Romney is a good choice at all. But Huckabee would sink the ticket just as fast as McCain when they attack him for taking bribes in a corruption election.

8. Steven Wilson | 08.24.08

Biden is a blathering egocentric manipulator of diarheal verbage. All he does is talk incessantly, while doing nothing as far as action, to fix anything.

He’ll tell you all about this problem…that problem…your problem…his sister’s problem…and everyone elses problems.

Other than that…..he’ll hog the stage from Obama for the next few months and do nothing for the United States as usual.

Talk about doing nothing……That’s Biden in a nutshell.

And you actually thought he was doing something with all that diarhea coming out of his blow hole over the last twenty years.

He is the epitome of a rich welfare recipient. He sits on the phone all day or hangs out at ABC,CBS,or NBC’s programs……and does nothing but talk.

What the heck are we paying for this guy to do?

And we really want Polly Talk Your Ear Off to lead this country?

We can do much better!

9. Qbear | 08.24.08

Huckabee for VP….oh Please, pretty please…from your mouth to God’s ear.

Saddle McCain with someone with squirrel meat in his teeth, who wanted to send People With AIDS to CAMPS.

do that honey

10. Creamsykle | 08.24.08

It doesn’t matter who McCain picks. Soon it will just be money as an issue, Obama will have plenty.

11. Maragret | 08.24.08

Correction to Peter’s post. Romney - even though he withdrew over a month before Huckabee - came in second ..not Huckabee. Check the delegate count. Romney is a class act and that’s why he should be McCain’s V.P. choice - not to mention what he could bring the ticket in MI, MN, CO and NV - all states where he beat McCain 3:1 in the primaries/caucuses. Romney could have stayed in and made it closer but it was clear that Huckabee/Romney/Thompson and Giuliani were all splitting the conservative vote early on - giving McCain the election easily. Head to head - like on the Democratic side, Romney would have beat McCain. In fact, if the Republicans used the Democratic primary rules, Romney would be the nominee and vice versa, Clinton would have been the nominee using the Republican rules. Ironic. I’m from Minnesota, Gov. Pawlenty is a great governor but has no national name recognition and could not give McCain even MN - Romney has a better chance of winning MN than Pawlenty does - check the MN caucus data…McCain didn’t even register even with vocal, early support from Gov. Pawlenty. McCain/Romney ‘08 to energize the conservative base which McCain must have…and Romney’s ever so successful business record will appeal to those who think the economy is bad. He’s the one that can best help McCain in that area. Note to Huckabee supporters: evangelicals and Catholics don’t beleive in being bigoted against the Mormon Church. I can’t beleive a minister like Huckabee is making statements like this. McCain would never pick Huckabee - voter turnout would be at an all time low on the Republican side. I wouldn’t vote for Obama…but I would stay home. Huckabee needs to go because what is saying about Romney in his new stint on FOX News is just not true.

12. Charles W | 08.24.08

If McCain feels so strongly about Hillary’s not being a V.P. pick he can pick her as his own running mate. Otherwise the old “maverick?” hasn’t got a leg to stand on. McCain’s whole campaign is one distracting irrelevant smokescreen after another. His cronies helped create the mess in Georgia which necessesitated Obama’s choice of Biden anyway.
Voting for McCaine is like hiring a pyromaniac to work for the Fire Department. Republican neocons create problems, then make a big show of blaming and attacking others as a make believe solution. They have a classic case of “Munchausen by proxy” syndrome. (Look it up.)

13. Chris | 08.24.08

The incentive for McCain to choose Romney is that virtually every Latter Day Saint will vote for him. That was proven both in Iowa, where dozens of buses with Romney supporters were brought in to Ames, and in Michigan, were buses braved a blizzard to bring local Mormons to the voting booth. The certainty of those votes, and the money and religious fervor they will bring to the election, will be hard for McCain to pass by.

McCain has to pick well. Nonetheless, his easiest pick to be a “Biden killer” would be Senator Grassley from Iowa, who can hold his own in an argument and is certainly a domestic policy expert. McCain is no weakling on foreign policy, and needs a VP who can direct our internal resources amongst the states.

14. Ted | 08.24.08

Despite the Dems and the allied main stream media’s desperation to see Romney as McCain’s Veep, Mitt is clearly out, with (1) Obama doubling down on the class warfare theme (McCain’s 7 houses) and (2) McCain doubling down with ads showing the hypocrisy of Biden attacking Obama in the primaries — Romney did way more than that contra McCain.

This leaves only Govs Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty. Pro-abortion Ridge and Dem-Lieberman were never real considerations, despite relentless media goading. Pawlenty’s lackluster TV performances, coupled with Palin pizzazz, the primacy of oil drilling and the ticked off women/Hillary voters, does now portend a McCain/Palin checkmate on the Dems. This is so albeit the Dems and liberal media dare not mention Palin’s name, that is, everyone but…..

And if there’s any question as to Palin being uniquely positioned and able to more than nullify Biden in debate, see the excellent discussion at palinforvp.blogspot.com

Team McCain, well done!!!

Huckabee is the best example of a sore loser I have ever seen. He is still in the primaries debating Mitt. Give it up Huckster…you lost! You will never have a political future in the GOP! McCAIN/MITT 08!

17. Rachel | 08.24.08

Too many people are under Romney’s bus for him to have my support.

The worst time was when he threw his wife under the bus. She had to take the blame for the check that they wrote to Planned Parenthood, her neme was on the check.

They attended the Planned Parenthood event together. Yet she took the blame.

Romney is a coward

18. Joe | 08.24.08

A McCain / Romney ticket would be awesome!

Romney has experience defending life and the family when he was the republican governor of a highly democratic state… when it came down to his decision making, he stood up for traditional families and pro-life.

And we are in the middle of an economic crisis, and Romney has made a living being an economic expert where he turned around companies, and the Olympics.

So you’d have an excellent commander-in-chief (McCain) combined with a great fiscal and social conservative (Romney). That earns my vote in a heartbeat. I’m a Christian and I feel this is the best formula for making sure we don’t lose our country this year. Other VP options are just ho-hum and risk losing the election to the Obama machine.

19. Joe | 08.24.08

Forgot to mention - not only did Romney stand up for families & life as governor, he also came on board when the state of Massacxhusettes needed rescuing economically.

He led the successful effort to bring the state budget from a huge defecit to a balanced budget, created jobs, completely turned aroudn the economy… all without raising taxes.

In these economic tough times, we really need that kind of economic expertise to compliment Sen McCain.

20. GeraldD | 08.24.08

Hillary got almost 20 Million votes. Biden couldn’t muster enough support to realistically get past Iowa.

Obama told everyone that Hillary was on the short list for the VP slot, yet we now discover that Obama was lying to everyone including the 18 Million Hillary supporters.

Obama made a number of sexist remarks and attacks during the primary.

And now we are just supposed to ignore the fact that Obama lied to us? Obama lied to all of us Hillary supporters and thought he was smart enough that he wouldn’t get caught in his lie! We guess what Senator? You certainly are an elitist, but you’re not a very smart elitist!

Senator Obama you think we are just supposed to ignore the fact that you picked a much weaker candidate, a candidate that was a long time Washington insider? A candidate that couldn’t even sell himself in Iowa and New Hampshire? A candidate that had criticized you like he did?

Everyone knows that the vast majority of the undecideds in today’s polls are Hillary supporters and Obama dares to insult us like this? He obviously doesn’t have very good judgment after all.

Click on the link to hear Obama tell us why he didn’t choose Hillary.

Hillary Clinton in 2012! Vote Against Obama!

21. Omentum | 08.24.08

Question?

If someone “REVEALS” you as the not ready for being president and if someone tells the “TRUTH” about your flaws, why in the heck would you want to put this person on your ticket?

Oh yeah, so the REPUGNICANS can use ad after ad after ad with Hillary trashing Obama and diminish the ticket. Hmmm I guess the McCain is dumber than I thought. I understand that McSame is trying to peel off those Hillary voters that are desperately looking for some reason to vote for McCain over EVERYTHING that Hillary stood for.

Congratulations Hillary Fans!!!! Here is a reason in this ad. A stupid reason… but a reason. So congrats to you. Get to Denver with your “NOBAMA” signs and scream to the top of your lungs in opposition to Obama’s choice for VP.

A wise man once told me…. It’s no fun in being stupid if you can’t show it.

22. Tim | 08.24.08

Huckabee is nothing but a bitter self righteous egotistical money grabbing schmuck. This supposed great preacher is the biggest sore loser of all time. A bigger bigot would be harder to find. His accusations against Romney are out right lies. He talks about changing positions… look in the mirror governor. You don’t hold a candle to Romney and never will. Biggest sore loser, and bigger BIGOT!!

23. Sidney | 08.24.08

Who is really the empty suit in this election? John McCain graduated in the bottom 1% of his Annapolis Class. George Custer graduated dead last in his class at West Point. Could this be a parallel in strategic military judgement? Commander in Chief indeed.

24. Qbear | 08.25.08

McCain/Romney won’t attract ONE Hillary supporter, ONE blue collar worker.
Doubling Down on multi-millionaire mansions is going to make every McCain house joke doubly potent.

25. McCain/Hillary08 | 08.25.08

A united front at all cost. Do you think hope would stop this improbable relatonship or the media? Why not?, even as Hillary withdrew from the chance to represent the women in America as the first president, John came to her rescue along with trying to recruit all of her voters. The spin on this united front would be overwhelmingly effective enough to quiet the Obama storm and create the ultimate media freenzy. As the great boxing promoter would put it; “Welcome to the rumbel in the jungle”. McCain/Clinton08 now thats CHANGE we can’t allow. Maybe at 3a.m. John and Hil can go over to Iraq to find those misplaced Weapons of mass distruction while ducking from sniper fire.

27. Passenger57 | 08.25.08

Isn’t Romney the guy who has five sons, none of which are in the military, and Romney made some lame-o excuse for that? That’s going to come up if he’s McC’s veep.
Obama was going to catch it no matter WHO he picked for veep.Bayh? Most have never heard of him.Sebillius(spelling?),same thing-and people would have said,”Why not Hillary?”because of her gender.Clinton? Forget it.If she hadn’t hammered Obama with insults during the primary,Obama probably WOULD have picked her.
The networks(and McCain) are showing clips of Biden bad-mouthing Obama…but what Clinton said was 10,000 times WORSE.”Change you can Xerox?” How was she going to explain THAT away? She went through the Repub.play book! They’re saying Biden’s vote for the war undercuts Obama’s position-but Clinton ALSO voted for the war. Also,Clinton is too ’slippery’;would she have been Obama’s corner as VP,or preparing herself for 2012? What would Bill be doing, roaming his old stomping grounds?
You can’t please everyone.Give Obama a break!

28. Shareef | 08.25.08

I’ve been watching CNN alot more lately and I don’t like what I see. I don’t understand how you can be a democratic hillary supporter that votes for McCain. I understand that your upset that your pick didn’t win but thats no excuse for flip-floping on your party. It makes no sense that you can support someone who has such opposite views then the candidate that you are so upset lost the nomination. When I see this, It makes me ask the question why were you voting for her in the first place. Were you paying attention to anything she was saying during her speeches or were you just waiting for her to finish so you can blindly cheer with the crowd. With America being in the state that its in we can not afford to be childish and ignorant. We’ve done that the past two elections and are paying for it right now. As an African-American college student living in the inner city i’ve felt the full brunt of the Bush effect in many aspects of my life. When you vote for a high ranking official you can’t be petty. You must understand the power that the president has and vote for a candidate because he is the better choice for america not because you dislike the other guy less. Remember that who ever you vote for we all have to deal with the consequences.

29. zippy | 08.25.08

Obama used Hillary then stepped on her to be able to walk on the next person using people to climb his latter of success. To me he’s a back stabber, opportunist and creep. He thinks that if it doesn’t benefit from it today, he won’t do things like face Bill Clinton to talk back some time ago. Visit the troops in Germany. Try harder with Hillary. He’s overconfident.

30. Randy S. | 08.25.08

To Number 12: perhaps you should look it up, you obviously have no idea waht Munchhausen by Proxy syndrome is. Instead of making yourself look intelligent you accomplished just the opposite.

To #23: Comparing McCain to Custer is a specious argument at best. As to where McCain finished in his class at West Point, that is totally irrelevant. The fact that he finished and graduated from West Point speaks volumes. It is one of the toughest schools, both academically and physically, in this country. Anyone who accomplishes an undergraduate degree from the academy should be lauded.
But then, all you folks who want to use that against him, try to consider how you’d fare during four years at the U.S.M.A. and then shutup.

31. J. Ron | 08.25.08

Sound like “Zippy” is a pinhead.

32. Matthew | 08.25.08

Romney would sink the ticket faster than anything else could do. He’s pushy and easily flustered in debates, and his many flip-flops (pro-choice and pro-life at least twice each, in addition to others) make him absolutely untrustworthy on any election issues. Plus, he has a domineering and patronizing personality, and a hopelessly superiority attitude.

More to the point, he hammered McCain badly during the primaries, which would definitely be used mercilessly by the Democrats.

However, if McCain isn’t going to win the general election anyway, I’d rather he took Romney down with him. Maybe then we’d have seen the last of Mitt - at least in national politics.

33. JD | 08.25.08

Hey Randy S., McCain graduated from the Naval Academy not West Point, but thanks! Either way, I think prior military service in a candidate is crucial to being Commander-in-Chief! Oh, and why does it seem like being for Obama is like being anti-military? For some reason it seems like it is ok to say “I support the troops”, but it’s not ok to actually serve. I think this country is headed for the toilet if we keep this “not for me or mine” attitude towards military service. If we keep this attitude, we will soon be seeing IED’s in Denver instead of football games. I support everything about the military and think every person should serve at least 2 years. We as a country are weakening and it will hurt us in the end.

And just in case you are wondering….I have served 12 years in the military! You are welcome!

34. Nancy | 08.25.08

All of you wonderful, nearly perfect Mormon Romney supporters are really doing a number on Huckabee’s good name. Most of what you say are lies. Does this keep you in good standing with God? Sounds evil to me. (And Huckabee is not a bigot.)

35. sheryl | 08.25.08

I think if the McCain camp tries to out “everyman” a Joe Biden type with Pawlenty/Palin?Huckabee I think that would be a mistake. McCain needs to make the economy about big picture issues like staying competitive in the world with a rising China (especially with the Beijing Olympics so fresh in everyone’s mind).

The middle class likes problem solvers and especially successful ones. If McCain chooses Romney as his VP he should stress that this is exactly why has and layout Mitt’s expertise in this area. Heck let them know Mitt already has a mandate in the McCain presidency to bring his private sector innovation and to work with Congress to get America energy independent.

Enough already with identity politics and who empathizes with who. Let the Democrats be the party that cries with them. The Republican party is about not giving them a reason to cry.

36. James | 08.25.08

A Romney VP pick does the most for McCain. McCain could chose from among Huckabee, Pawlenty, Palin, Ridge or Leiberman, but Romney does the most for the ticket in terms of votes, dollars, business & economy prowess, and knowledge about health care. Romney is an excellent debater against Democrats, look great on TV, and is articulate.

I am a Mormon Romney supporter but would still support McCain even if he chose Huckabee. I don’t think you can say the same that about the majority of Huckabee supporters (that if McCain choses Romney, they’ll back McCain and get on board and support Mitt 100%.)

With Romney, McCain will trounce Obama-Binliden. Romney would eat Biden for lunch during the VP debates. Did you hear Biden’s latest gaffe on Saturday when he announced “Barak America?”

Once the media begins to vett Obama and they have to admit that Obama has accomplished nothing (yes nothing) during his Senate career, the American people will turn to McCain, the candidate who has proven himself.

Obama has a nice smile, and loves change, but he doesn’t know how to bring it about - at least, that has been his experience up until now.

What great change did Obama ever bring to his constituents?

37. HS | 08.25.08

McCain’s ad mainly targets Hillary Clinton’s supporters in the battle ground states, like Ohio, Pennslvania, Florida, etc where Obama did not win in the primary. About 30% of Hillary’s supporters are not supporting Obama at this moment. This is a hugh number since many of those supporters are women and if Obama cannot have the hugh margin of women voters to offset the margin that McCain will get from men, he will lose.

38. zippy | 08.25.08
