McCain goes to Hollywood - Appears on Leno, meets with celebs

By Jimmy Orr | 08.26.08

For the past month, one strategy of the McCain campaign has been to paint Barack Obama as a “worldwide celebrity.” Someone who is as idolized as much as a rock star, but who is - using their tagline - “not ready to lead.” Pundits and pollsters seem to agree that this has been a successful strategy and has resulted in a leveling of poll numbers.

Despite this, however, McCain spent a lot of time with his own celebrities yesterday.

First it was Daddy Yankee, the reggaeton star, who endorsed the Senator at a Phoenix High School — which prompted a few of the less-contemporary readers of this blog to write things like “who the heck is Daddy Yankee?” There were plenty of readers who seemed to like the singer. One visitor had an amusing and somewhat quizzical analogy:

“Haha! Daddy Yankee is the Sausage Haus of popular music,” wrote Agamemnon.

Next up, McCain hit the Jay Leno show - a program he has appeared on numerous times. Fact is, McCain’s a good guest.

And he was last night. Of course, it helps when you’re under the public microscope. It gives comedians plenty of fodder.

Leno piled on from the beginning.

From the monologue:

““Tropical Storm Fay has soaked Florida … ruining thousands of homes, most of them belonging to John McCain,” he said. “In fact, to make Sen. McCain feel at home tonight, I gave him 7 dressing rooms.”

Age was a fair target (or Leno made it so). Again, during the monologue:

“It was this week in 1814, British troops set fire to the White House. Did you know that?” Leno asked. “The White House was saved, it was saved thanks to the actions of one brave young soldier, John McCain.”

McCain himself stepped back further in to time by adding, “You forgot when I warned the people about the British coming.”

So old is he, McCain said, “My social security number is 8.”

The topic of McCain’s forthcoming vice presidential pick came up, and McCain provided some insight.

“I know you have been asking about who I want to be as my running mate,” McCain told Leno. “Now wouldn’t it be good to have a person, you don’t know what party they’re with, they have no political principles whatsoever, they may need a job about that time. Who could I be referring to?”

McCain was referring to Leno, whose contract is expiring. Could we see a McCain-Leno ticket? The comedian declined, stating he could make more money in Las Vegas in one week.

McCain threw up a softball by countering “the house is nice.”

Without hesitation, Leno said, “You have enough of those.”

There was a serious moment between the two when discussing last week’s much talked about housing gaffe.

“Could I just mention to you, Jay, that, at a moment of seriousness,” McCain said, “I spent five-and-a-half years in a prison cell. I didn’t have a house. I didn’t have a kitchen table. I didn’t have a table. I didn’t have a chair. And I didn’t spend those five-and-a-half years because, not because I wanted to get a house when I got out.

After the afternoon taping, McCain rounded out the day by attending a Hollywood fundraiser with — actual celebrities. They may be a small group, but the list - courtesy of FOX News - includes

Stephen Baldwin
Pat Boone
Wilford Brimley
Dean Cain
Jon Cryer
Robert Duvall
Angie Harmon
Patricia Heaton
Lorenzo Lamas
Craig T. Nelson
Gail O’Grady
Jason Sehorn
Gary Sinise
Jon Voight

“I would like to thank so many brave and courageous people who are here that happen to be in the business of Hollywood who are risking their entire futures and careers,” McCain told the group.

Another POW reference! McCain can’t open his mouth without mentioning it. Is the man trying to lock up the pity vote? “He’s really old and he’s willing to sell out his principles to ingratiate himself with the Republican leadership, but gosh darn he deserves to be president because he was locked up in a cage 40 years ago.”

2. Grant Cothran | 08.26.08

My friend, you can’t have it both ways.

Daddy Yankee? Gail O’Grady? Hardly A-list. But that McCain is hosting such company tells me he wants to be sitting with the popular kids - he just isn’t.

You don’t get to criticize Obama simply for being popular when your aspiration is to be popular yourself.

I think there’s a word for that - envy?

3. Jason | 08.26.08

does McCain even relaize what that Daddy Yankee song is about? In a room with underage teenage girl no less, in a high school??

Pathetically out of touch, this McCain.

McCain is a 100% hypocrit

4. john mccain shirts | 08.26.08

Looks like Angelina is going to Obama if her dad is at a McCain fundraiser.

5. Jason | 08.26.08

Stephen Baldwin - racist
Pat Boone - racist
Wilford Brimley - racist
Dean Cain - racist
Jon Cryer - who cares?
Robert Duvall -old white man scared of change
Angie Harmon - “Kept” GOP woman
Patricia Heaton - clueless Bush supporter
Lorenzo Lamas - conservative hispanic with ideals misplaced
Craig T. Nelson - old school racist
Gail O’Grady - who cares?
Jason Sehorn - look like a white supremecist
Gary Sinise - confused
Jon Voight - old white man scared of change

How dare the guy mention his service and sacrifice for this country when it might mike those like Obomber look wimpy and selfish. Gee McCain has nerve.

Obama was criticized for being a celebutant (all paparazzi and no substance). Get your talking points right, kids.

8. Rick Durocher | 08.26.08

Doesn’t REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE and good old American GUTS mean anything to you wimpy democrats ? It sure outranks a Black Muslim anyday to me !!!

9. Jim H | 08.26.08

I have two comments regarding prior letters to the editor:
- John McCain has every right to make a “POW reference”. He is not after “pity”, as Tim B. puts it.I, for one, admire and respect the man for his endurance AND perseverance in going through that hell.
- I am not sure what Grant is getting at here: as a father,John McCain knows that “rubbing elbows” with the A-list does not guarantee votes from the X-generation. What I think that he is doing is showing that age is no barrier to understanding and communicating with younger generations.
I encourage anyone and everyone to deal with the ISSUES, and where the candidates stand in regard to them. Is this not what we want and need to know???

10. Marko | 08.26.08

Old, pathetic, demented and with the same principles as VP Cheney, whom he actually looks like. Sad fact is that he wants more wars so more can become long-term war prisoners in unjust wars around the world. Maybe they too can dream in prison to marry a rich heiress, live off her money, and run for president with a Bush platform.

11. Rush | 08.26.08

So it’s OK for John Kerry to stuff his fraudulent Vietnam service in our faces, but when a Real war hero AND POW mentions it in passing, it’s unacceptable.

12. scott Kneiding | 08.26.08

Bruce Springsteen is no has-been. You don’t have to agree with his politics to enjoy his music. people need to start realizing that some of us are middle of the road.

13. smc | 08.26.08

Why is it that everyone who doesn’t side with Obama is a racist? McCain was more than a little complimentary on Leno. Yes, a couple of comical zingers, but it was clear that he had respect for Obama and Biden. He mentioned more than once that this is about ideological differences, not about personal politics. And to show a little goodwill, I will readily concede that he would do well not to play the POW card so much. I don’t believe he’s looking for sympathy/pity… I think he uses it to validate his integrity/commitment to USA. But it’s not necessary and can be a distraction. Why don’t we start the civility ball rolling right here and right now? Enough with the lame, cheap, and easy comments like racist. Most competent Dems wouldn’t agree with your labeling of these folks as racist. Grow up.

14. Josh Weilder | 08.26.08

Reverend Wright - who married Obama, baptized his two daughters, served as a spiritual advisor to Michelle and Barack Obama = Extreme Hypocrite

Barack Obama - “Washington is Broken - Vote for me for Change” choosing a 36 year Washington veteran to be his running mate = Extreme Hypocrite

But that’s OK to all of you blind, pathetic liberal sheep out there who don’t have a clue what this life on Earth is all about. Fools. You’ll regret your support of the Communist Obama.

15. Josh Weilder | 08.26.08

Racism = Wright, friend of Wright = Racist. nuff said.

16. Jeff | 08.26.08

How much of a difference 4 yrs makes! John Kerry’s (”reporting for duty”)campaign was based on his wartime service and his military experience (as a JUNIOR officer in the Navy? C’mon…not exactly involved in any of the major planning or command duties!). And all the Libs kept talking about was his service to the country. Now, they prop up a guy with no established record of accomplishment (pls name 3!), no executive experience, no major political experience (he started campaigning for President virtually right after he joined the US Senate), and no private experience running a company (what the heck is a community organizer anyway? More like a community agitator!). 4 yrs ago it was all about military service…today, for the first time in almost 70 yrs, the Dums have a ticket with absolutely NO military experience and they can’t run from that fast enough! The candidate of change? He selects a guy for VP who’s been in Washington for 34 yrs - 4 yrs longer than McCain!!! And you say McCain is out of touch? He may not remember how many houses HIS WIFE owns (she’s got the wealth in the family) but at least they were purchased, I’m confident, honestly and legally…how about Obama’s little deal with Reszco (sp?) - a convicted felon? You Obama supporters are hypocrites!!! Again, you may not like McCain’s record..BUT AT LEAST HE HAS ONE!!!!!

17. maggie | 08.26.08

Jason - ignorant dim wit

A man’s service is to be respected. Great age is to be respected. Wisdom comes with experience. Clearly you and your homie Obama have none of that. No experience, always naive and ignorant.

18. Joshua McGovern | 08.26.08

Getting shot down and captured and bragging about it impulsively, abandoning one’s wife when she is in a life changing accident for a woman twenty years younger, and now saying nothing about changing our war and tax cut borrowing that is making our dollar and economy smaller by the year. Such a leader would change more than the ability of our children and our children’s children to smile. It will change our standing in the eye of the Lord. I think anyone who bows their head to our Him must contend with such issues in choosing our representative and leader.

19. jon | 08.26.08

It really is amazing, everything is attack Obama, or *by the way, I was a POW.*
I’m a Vet… McCain sickens me, with how he uses (and demeans) POWs.
He also said he was proud of his father in law… someone to be proud of…

“I would like to thank so many brave and courageous people who are here that happen to be in the business of Hollywood who are risking their entire futures and careers,” McCain told the group.

Yes, because everyone was wondering where Willford Brimley was last night. *cough*

21. gooseguy | 08.26.08

Re: #6 Hassett: Yeah…. well, he had HALF of “Big & Rich” rooting for him,anyway….. I forget, but it must’ve been the “Rich” half.

Oh boy have they got their message down pat over at McCain’s Campaign and Disneyfication Headquarters — first we’ll spend a week criticizing the “other guy” for being a celeb, then we’ll go to Hollywood and court celeb’s. Clarity and consistency. Oh and Quality: true, I’m not much of a People-Mag reader, but fully half of those “celebs” are folks I’ve never heard of. How about all those musicians who snubbed Johnny, and all those feeble attempts at “hipness” that blew up when the artists stepped up and said, “not in my name you don’t.” Sort of like all those campaign people that had to be quietly let off the “Express” bus when it turned out they had “problematic” past histories that embarrassed the campaign….. and now, the best thing they can come up with is a toxic rap star who sings about boffing young girls as his claim to fame. NOW we’re on message, John; hey whatever it takes to get a rise out of ‘em, eh? Don’t you guys have some kind of vetting process over there? Does ANYbody at McCain HQ think this stuff thru….??

22. C. Casperson | 08.26.08

John McCain has a great sense of humor, is a good man, and it surprising how he is criticized for the slightest thing. Usually the criticisms are not exactly brilliant.

23. Michael | 08.26.08

Patricia who?

PS - Only half of Big and Rich

I’ll take Springsteen over Pat Boone anyday.

24. CHARLES | 08.26.08

HIS FRIST HOUSE HAD A CANARY IN IT

25. jon | 08.26.08

@ Mike Hassett - - no Moonbat liberal, here, whatever that is.
I’ve voted GOP my whole life. I’m a Vet.
Just got tired of all the hate-mongering (you for instance), and how the GOP speaks nicely before an election, but after the election, they don’t support the troops/vets. McCain was against the new GI Bill. He allowed our troops to go into Iraq, without proper equipment… he votes against Vets continually.
He’s changed his stance on torture. I can go on for days.
I’m no Liberal, but I will never vote GOP again, until these hypocrits are run out of the Party.
Just because I disagree with many Liberals, does not mean they are bad people.
The GOP continually tries to paint these people as unpatriotic, immoral, etc.
That’s garbage.
You bought it, but it aint true. They just have a different worldview.
At this point, they’re offering a helluva lot more to this Country, than the GOP, which is now just about greed, and nothing about giving/helping.

26. Juan | 08.26.08

Daddy Yankee’s first album was entitled “No Mercy” and was released in 1995 when he was only 18 years old. He had no success with it, but he continued performing reggaeton for the next ten years, forming a duet with Nicky Jam. His last album “El Cartel: The Big Boss” sold 500,000 units at the moment of release in the United States and 50,000 in Mexico.

“He’s always been a fighter for the Hispanic community,” McCain told the reports about Daddy Yankee. The performer showed some political skills when he was asked about his famous song “Gasolina.” As reports asked him what the song is about, he answered “energy independence.”

27. Gina | 08.26.08

Mike Hassett,

I don’t know who Big & Rich is, but their name is ironic. I wonder if anyone will remember who they are in twenty years the way icons like Bruce Springstein are remembered. Could be. But that is beside the point. I am progressive, thanks, and I don’t care if both candidates have a constellation of stars backing them, I only care who is more likely to remember who they really work for. I think McCain is confused on that point and he has done nothing to convince me otherwise.

28. Franglais | 08.26.08

I’m sad about Robert, Gary and Jon; Baldwin boys will be Baldwin boys; I vaguely remember Pat Boone used to be “someone” back in the days; but who are the others?! If I need to go on wiki to find out who they are, they ain’t worth anything!
Those are like D-List wannabe celebs ;-)

29. stan | 08.26.08

The Republicans have been portraying Bush as having been sent by the Almighty Himself to save America, so it’s a bit unfair to criticize anyone else on the celebrity thing. I mean, that’s more celebrity association than all of Hollywood put together!

30. tj | 08.26.08

The reason leftists get so upset over McCain mentioning his service to his country and his sacrifice is because they haven’t AND they won’t.

Its much easier and less requiring of backbone to sit back, enjoy the benefits of this country and let someone else sacrifice to protect your rights. A

s a joke I entered Obama’s name for “Head of Animal Control in our town” (head dogcatcher) but he was denied - not enough experience.

Of course that certainly qualifies him as the nominee for the Democrat party - most of them have done less for the country and reaped even more benefits. And leftist hate men - thats why George Clooney and Sean Penn are such liberals.

They are apparently males - but haven’t seen either of them function convincingly in a role as a man.

“Let someone else (making 15K a year) fight our country’s battles while us “stars” rake in millions and never do a sacrificial thing in our useless and miserable lives.” Thanks.

31. Franglais | 08.26.08

BTW, why has McCain stopped showing up on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart?
Is it because it’s easy to take “friendly jabs” from Jay, but he can’t stand honest criticism about his hypocrisies from Stewart? He used to be on Stewart’s show all the time!

32. Andsie | 08.26.08

Jason, you just can’t help yourself, can you?

Don’t you get it that you are doing exactly what you Obama people are saying others do you you and him? You are practicing sexisim, racism and libelous commentary. Of course you do.

Angie Harmon is a “kept” GOP woman? Really. On what do you base that charge? I’d sue your butt if I were her for libel.

You’ve called five individuals racists; again, used sexism as a basis of your ridiculous post and basically have shown one more time, you people on the Left just can’t stop attacking character if we don’t agree with of your political viewpoint. That is the sickening part of all this. The Kos’s and the Moveons who haven’t a clue about real life and yet get to effectuate the outcome of an election that is beyond their understanding and ability to cope. You have simply no idea what you’re talking about.

That is what wrong with America and what is wrong with the Democratic Party. I suspect you have little else to offer in the way of actual debate.

What a pitiful group of children you all are…some day you will have to give to your country. Really give, in a way that perhaps you can understand what it’s like to sacrifice for something other than you.

But until the entitled, those young men and women who didn’t do squat for their country except take up valuable space and oxygen, can accuse and call names.

Meanwhile,I can’t wait until it happens…until your sick little soul comes of age and gets in the line of fire with the big kids.

What a loser.

Oh, and Jason, grow up.

33. foyhasi | 08.26.08

Rick Durocher,

Wake up ignorant person. Barrack is no more a muslim than you are. you probably are a muslim, who knows, who cares.
He’s probably more christian than you’ll ever hope to be. You need to crawl out of the hole you live in…

ps-I bet you’re super white trash. you have an old camaro, dont you. is your favorite band Journey?

34. Aladine Vargas | 08.26.08

It always amazes me how ridiculous people act and it is scary how they think when they live life from the idea that “freedom is free.”

Honesty, ask yourself one question… “What in your life are you willing to get rid of …. so you, your family, your friends and a complete stranger … can have the right to think and say whatever they want, whenever they want to and not fear that they will lose the flexibility to pursue the progression and development of their mental, emotional, spiritual, financial and physical lifestyle?

or another why of saying the question is: What do you consider to be the fair cost for freedom?

35. Franglais | 08.26.08

Name calling and generalizing makes no sense. “You dums” “racists” “white trash” “communist” “loser” etc.
It seems to be a barrage from both sides!

I’m new to this here forum/blog/whatever, but why not try and have a civil discussion?
For example, how does “serving more” time make one a “bigger hero”?
Does that mean someone who’s been over in Iraq for only two months isn’t as much of a hero as McCain?

36. Jerry Hermes | 08.26.08

Bottom line: Obama is a nobody who has accomplished nothing. Four short years ago he’s an obscure state senator, a Chicago pol relatively unknown outside of his own district. Spends his entire 3-year tenure as US Senator running for President. Now him as the leader of the free world? Give me a #@$*ing break.

37. smc | 08.26.08

Let’s see if you sing the same tune when your taxes start climbing through the roof for a bunch of social programs to support those ‘in need’.

You know… like the illegals in Maryland who are now getting ‘In-State’ tuition rates for state colleges.

And let’s see how you feel when they start taking your money and redistributing it to those in ‘greater need’. Crazy. But I must admit that there is a small part of me that kinda hopes he does win.

Then, with a Democratic congress and white house, you’ll come to understand what we’ve been trying to tell you. The real test will be who they blame.

In all likelihood… you’ll hear them blame it all on ‘the Bush years’ (when the Dems were running congress!!!).

And why is it that everyone talks about Bush’s approval rating (29%) but never the fact that Congress’ approval rating is MUCH lower (18%). Why is everything Bush’s fault???

38. Tom More | 08.26.08

I don’t think people running for president should go on talkshows. Most talkshow hosts are lightweights and very liberal in their views. I’d like my president to be on a higher plane than entertainers and not pander to them. I’ll vote for the first man or women who refuses to appear on these shows. I’m fed up with politicians who try to ingratiate themselves with Hollywood types.

39. Franglais | 08.26.08

@SMC: Does that mean your taxes haven’t gone in the past eight years? Good for you! You must one of the very few who earn enough to get some nice tax breaks….

40. Franglais | 08.26.08

Also, “the dems” were only running congress for what, the last 2 years of Bush’s two terms?

41. richard | 08.26.08

As a 58 year old pre-retiree I want to thank all these young libral voters for supporting Obama and his liberal agenda of giveaway programs. When I retire all these social programs will be in place to make my life easier and I won’t have to pay much in income taxes. Unfortunately, I can’t convince my 30 something kids from voting for Obama as they say ” We the younger generation will have to be paying for all these giveaway programs for the rest of our lives” All we want is to be able to keep more of what we work so hard for, but Obama wants to redistribute our “earned income” our “savings and investments” to less productive people in the workforce (or not) and “jeopardize our future socail security benefits”. If you don’t make enough at work, re-educate yourself, take night courses to improve yourself, learn a new skill. I keep trying but these young people just don’t appreciate all that Obama wants to do for “the less fortunate”. BTW,I am the grandson of immigrants who came to this glorious country with the cloths on their backs and little else. Think about it! As far as McCain’s POW experience, try spending just 1 day in a darked closet, he spent 5 1/2 years in a similar space, concrete floor, no toilet, beaten almost every day, jaw and arms broken and allowed to reset out of alignment. Most would have given up. McCain defines the word “HOPE”.

42. Dr. Dave | 08.26.08

McCAin is so right. Anyone in the entertainment business who so much as makes a crack about their lord god Obama will risk their future careers. George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, Oprah and Barbara Streisand will make sure of that! That’s why the so called comedians “can’t” find anything funny about Mr. “I wasn’t in church that day”.

43. Ronald | 08.26.08

McCain, a war hero? Let’s see… he crashed 4 airplanes, was shot down out of his 5th and then was captured while killing civilians in Hanoi. He then was “used” in propoganda films over 25 times by the North Vietnamese. Divorced his first wife because she was no longer the trophy wife he had married. Married his second — younger throphy wife within a month of divorcing #1. Cindy McCain claims to be an only child but has 2 half-sisters and when her father died, leaving his fortune to her, she cut off her half-sisters credit card. And now McCain will have to have his staff count his houses and get back to us? Pathetic, pityful and disgusting.

44. americanpie | 08.26.08

45. Ronald | 08.26.08

Inexperienced? Yeah, I guess Abraham Lincoln wouldn’t qualify to run for office in 2008!

46. americanpie | 08.26.08

47. foyhasi | 08.26.08

or another why of saying the question is: What do you consider to be the fair cost for freedom?
———————-
Sending our troops to an unneccesary war is not exactly a fair cost for freedom, it was a WAR FOR OIL! By, the way, have you signed up for the military, have YOU specifically requested to be assigned in Iraq or Afghanistan? IF not, why not? I would think you’d have signed up a long time ago so you could contribute to “the fair cost for freedom”.

49. Ed Macias | 08.26.08

McCain’s social security number is 8? Wow, he must be rich! I heard if your number is in the Top 10, you’re collecting $5 Million a year!

50. Stan | 08.26.08

Several years ago gas price was $2.00 a gallon. The markets were booming! The DOW was 14,093. Democrats wanted Change! Yep, Change! They were voted into control of Congress, and yep, Change we got. $4.00 gasoline, and refusal to allow drilling and exploration for oil, same as they have restricted drilling since 1981. Just the “thought” of new drilling and exploration sent Oil prices down, down, down! Of course the Dems say drilling will not have any effect. Now, just “who” is out of touch? Who does not understand the relationship between supply and demand? Vote Democrat to cut off supply! Then cry that “demand” forces the prices through the roof! Yep, that’s the loony left for you!

51. John | 08.26.08

Andsie:
From your post to Jason you seem so upset by what he has said, then you characterize him as a “loser” only to end your diatribe with a demand that he “grow up”. What qualities of youth do you so dispise? Is that a part of your bias (allegiance) to McCain? Is the realtive youthfullness of Obama to McCain a disability?

52. Tim B | 08.26.08

smc: “In all likelihood… you’ll hear them blame it all on ‘the Bush years’ (when the Dems were running congress!!!).”

The neverending cycle of Republican historical revisionism continues. Repeat a lie often enough and I’m sure it’ll eventually become a known fact, kinda like how Vietnam vets were spit on or how Saddam had WMD’s. There were 4 solid years from ‘02-’06 that the government was completely controlled by the GOP. Astonishingly and completely unpredictably, these 4 years account for 90% of the damage inflicted on the U.S. during the Bush administration.

I would agree, however, that Democrats have no excuse for their pathetic performance this session. They’ll say the Republicans blew the filibuster record out of the water, which they did, but that only excuses the lack of productivity. When they were productive, Dems repeatedly voted with the GOP majority out of political self-interest.

So yes, you will hear lots of people blame things on the “Bush Years”, and despite your preemptive efforts they will be correct in their disdain.

53. d | 08.26.08

Stan,
Im sorry to inform you that you have absolutely no clue what your talking about. Supply and demand isnt that simple. Did you know that oil (even oil drilled here) enters the world market. It doesnt stay here, period.

If you want to make big oil get richer while your gas bills go up, vote McSame. If you are intellegent, and you realise that we need other energy options, vote obama.

54. Jager | 08.26.08

I am 31, and in my short career as an active voter I have done my due diligence and many times have I voted for candidates of both parties. (Let’s be honest those affiliations have little impact at the local level.) One thing I have noticed though is that staunch defenders of Republicans come across as dimwitted and upwards of 70% of all “facts” are indeed blatant lies easily disproved within 15 seconds searching google. Meanwhile you have the Democrats who typically are better informed on the facts but are so busy trying to keep everyone happy that they rarely show spine or backbone. (Closest they get is to link the “proof”) I really wish people would stop calling Obama Muslim and state McCain “exploits” his POW experience. Obama is a Christian…and if you spent several years in a POW camp the last thing I would ever want to do is forget/ignore the experience. Figure out what issues are the most important to you, and pick the set of lies that are the lesser of two evils and cast your ballot. Or, if you’re a typical American peasant, vote on hate: If you hate old people, vote Osama. If you hate black people, vote McCain. But for the love of all that’s holy keep your moronic, uninformed opinions to yourselves and your chain e-mail distribution lists.

55. tdub | 08.26.08

Wow, now WHO is the “celebrity” candidate? Why isn’t the media treating this as critically as they did Obama? Who REALLY is getting the “free ride” from the lazy press?

56. Lulu Cestmoi | 08.26.08

Hey, what a bunch of anti-McCain attacks!! He must be the devil reincarnation. Not Obama of course, who is a true angel.

They both are politicians so they both stink. At least. McCain has sense of humor and knows how to laugh about himself. Can Obama do the same?

57. Mary | 08.26.08

Yes John, we know, we know all about your pow days. You have mentioned it once or twice!!! Guess that makes you an expert on War. So then I guess Barack is an expert on,??? hmmm PEACE?

58. Andrew | 08.26.08

Heros jump on grenades. Simply showing up for the fight does not make one a hero. Being a bad pilot with poor escape and evasion tactics does not make someone a hero. It certainly does not qualify them to be president.

For all the carrying on about Obama not having a plan and being inexperienced I haven’t heard anything resembling a plan out of McCain. Obama gave us a four point energy plan, a plan for Iraq, a plan for health care.

Siding with Bush 95% of the time and not laying out a plan for anything is not leadership, which McCain feels qualified to use for his tag line.

59. Bill M. | 08.26.08

Oil companies have oil leases on some 68 million acres of land, yet they refuse to drill there and demand instead to drill offshore. All oil produced from offshore drilling will be sold on the open market and the profits will go to the oil companies. None of that oil goes directly to the US; we will have to buy it on the open market. The small amount of offshore oil in relation to oil from the major producers around the world will not result in a significant drop in gas prices at the pump.

“Drill here and drill now” is a nice but meaningless slogan. Even if offshore oil were somehow given directly to us, we would still need to import most of our oil, so again there would be no significant lowering of gas prices.

Getting shot down and captured and bragging about it impulsively,”

Joshua: You don’t even come close to getting it. The fact that McCain was a prisoner isn’t the issue. The fact that he was offered a chance to leave early and avoid torture, but chose to stay b/c it was the right thing to do -is everything. It verifies Character. Obama may have it - but it certainly has not been verified in the crucible, the way that McCain’s has.

Anybody who has served could have been a POW - it shows service and sacrifice - but refusing to be let go and having an increase in pusnishment as a result - because it was right - that’s character. Explain that away.

This is how John McCain forms a sentence:

Noun, verb, POW.

Re your comment to Andsie

I believe the qualities she despises are immaturity and ignorance/ lack of wisdom–the youthfulness of Obama to McCain is not a “disability” but when you’ve got a bunch of immature ignorant kids excited for Obama’s supposed “change” it can be a little upsetting–comprende?

McCain should be called McCon. Does he not realize that his POW story means that he LOST the Vietnam war? Out of touch, if elected, he will again lose the IRAQ/AFGHAN wars (even if they last 100 years!!).

66. M. Bailey | 08.26.08

What is it that all of us who sit on our couches and make opinions about the worthiness of Obama vs. McCain, who served voluntarily in the armed force, forget to remember? - The point, very important point, is that the men and women who are actually serving, putting life and limb on the line are more in favor of Obama then McCain. They want to come home!! Please good people - don’t vote for a war monger unless you’re very clear that your children, relatives and neighbors will actually be fighting and losing lives while we debate who the best candidate is as well as the loss of lives of the very people we said that we started the war to protect (1 million or more). However, judging by the fact that many people will stay in a rut because at least they have one/something - maybe the very idea of change is what is feared the most.

69. chris | 08.26.08

I think it is PERFECTLY ok for McCain to reference his time as a POW. It’s legit…and a true barameter of his character. How many times do we need to hear Obama talk about his “lame” time as a community organizer…whatever that is? That’s a real accomplishment…tough duty for sure. Oh and by the way…can the dems be sure to setup a teleprompter for Obama next time he has to state where he is? No Obama, not St. Louis you are in Kansas City and by the way…you did not campaign in 57 states…we only have 50 states. This is the guy you want to elect President of the U.S. Are you NUTS!

70. Rodney Lamprey, jr. | 08.26.08

Sure, McCain spent 5 and half years in a prison cell without a kitchen table. And when McCain got out, he cheated on his wife who had been in a horrible car accident, dumped her, and left his family. McCain didn’t have pity for his wife, and didn’t help her when she needed him. When McCain had his chance, he did chose teh rich life through his mistress and second wife.

71. Sean | 08.26.08

In reference to Tim B’s comment:

“He’s really old and he’s willing to sell out his principles to ingratiate himself with the Republican leadership, but gosh darn he deserves to be president because he was locked up in a cage 40 years ago.”

Honestly Tim I can’t think of a better reason to elect a man to this nation’s highest elected office. He honorable and courageously served in an unpopular war and was endured untold, unknown horrors in the cage he was locked up in. That kind of experience builds character, the very thing that has been so lacking in American politics of late. I am proud to be a McCain supporter and offer him a sincere thanks for his lifetime of service to this country both in and out of uniform. He has earned the right to refernce his POW status.

72. angel | 08.26.08

It’s a great service McCain performed for our country. He should be given proper respect in that regard. I’ve never had a problem with people painting him as a war hero–but that’s exactly where his heroism stops.

At some point, all his constant reminders of his time in the POW camp is going to bring to public eye the goings-on of his time there and immediately following–i.e., that his wife (the first one) waited years for news of her husband, suffered a terrible car accident whilst that left the former swimsuit model disabled which drastically altered her physical appearance, and that she was immediately deposited in another house of Mccain’s upon his American return, and within the year he had divorced her, and a month following that, he married Cindy McCain.

In other words, he’s an asshole as well as a war hero. You can be both, but I’ll be voting for neither.

74. Socrates | 08.26.08

Yes Franglais you can argue the fact that the DEMS have had Congress for only two years but look what has happened to our country since the Democrats have been in control over the past two years:

Oil Prices Doubling
Foreclosure Rates Soaring
Plunging Home Prices

In the past two years I have had to get two “Full Time” jobs just to make a living. I will not take charity.

McCain or Obama will not change anything, except, maybe, the psychology of Americans who feel that Bush is creating strife. The only way America will change is when each of us as individuals look upon our individual ways of working towards the betterment of our nation and our fellow man.

I am not sure who will make a better president or which party would be better suited to be the majority in Congress but I am sure of ONE thing: That I make MY future - not some politician or political party.

My biggest breakthrough in my adult life has been this elightening thought - I Am Responsible!

Let’s all say it together — “I Am Responsible”

Once we all realize that we are responsible for our own “good luck” or “hardship” we will not be so hateful towards one another.

America is great because of this. It will continue to be great long after we are gone.

Mc Cain is a hypocrite for trying to show that he is cool by hanging out with celebrities. Newsflash Mc Cain! If you want to be hip, you have to do better than Daddy Yankee. The rapper sings about violence, pimpin’ and money. He doesn’t even speak english or spanish properly. He is a prime example of the failing education system that you are going to help worsen when you lower all those taxes, continue with war, thereby making our social services go to hell. Sorry people!!! But when you vote to lower taxes social services go down, it’s as true as the law of gravity.

Mc Cain might be old, but I doubt that he is wise. With his age, and the trauma he went though in prison, I doubt he has a stable mind. I know many older people that are out of tune with reality. Many don’t even know how to use the internet so they get all their information from inacurrate news stations like CNN and FOX. John is very lucky that he survived prison and was able to buy 7 homes. I wonder if he wouldn’t mind giving one of those homes away to support the struggling and insanely traumatized war veterans to whom I give money to on a regular basis. The U.S. had no right to be in Vietnam in the first place, all that aside, I’m sure that the torture tactics used by the Vietcong were just as bad as waterboarding, or who knows what else the military is doing. I don’t trust Mc Cain, his ideals are misplaced, and many of his followers are underinformed or misinformed.

76. Edward Stanley | 08.26.08

It’s amazing how both sides get all polarized. Everything is apparently black and white on all issues but in the end its all about what percentage of funds goes to projects versis whether or not they are supported or not. The guys probably golf together. Anyone without freedom will despise the leader, no matter who it is (obama will be too white or mccain will be too scotch), for those in dictatorships and other state run governments will immediately assume we believe everything our leaders say and tow the line just like they are expected to do.

If you want to blame that the guys are rich, its only sour grapes. Personally I think the job is probably the ‘boardwalk’ of things to have on your CV but mostly thankless.

But i’m a sucker for funny. And a sense of humour is what the world needs.

77. John | 08.26.08

What this election is about is the cyclical nature of politics. In the sixties, the left became very powerful and swung the pendulum far to the left. The left abused that power and did stupid things. It spawned some of the hate from the right that we see today. Eventually the pendulum swung far to the right. The right abused that power and did stupid things. The right stood for something when they were countering the left, but essentially abandoned those principles and are led by the comedians Limbaugh and Hannity. The teachings of these comedians are espoused by their followers, who demean anything not far right of center. They rely on name calling and falsehoods like their mentors. John McCain 2000 was a decent candidate, John McCain 2008 is a disaster. What the country needs is for Obama to win, for the pendulum to start its swing back to the middle. Then the right needs to wise up and realize that their constant name calling and partisanship have undercut any message they previously had. They need to regain a backbone and start arguing policies instead of name calling. At some point we in the middle need to gain sufficient mass to keep that pendulum near the middle where the country is strongest.

Actually I can deal with the mostly paid RNC posters on here but I take great offense at TJ comments. I did serve my country with dignity, pride, and honor. just because I don’t believe like you. Who are YOU to categorize me?

I respect John McCain’s service to this country, as I respected Kerry’s and all the other millions of servicemen and woman who gave up their rights and their freedom and very often their lives so you can make ridiculous posts.

Unlike Cheney and Bush (who didn’t serve no matter what Daddy says), Paul Wolfowitz and the rest of the Chicken Hawks. I d not believe that my Service Brother’s and Sister’s should be put into harm’s way lightly. And I have a right to believe that because I served my nation! I served, my Father-in-law served, my father served, my grandfather’s served.

I may respect John McCain’s service but I do not like the man. I don’t like how he has dishonored himself. Some things are above Politics and honoring and respect our fighting men and women is one of them. McCain has catered to the right wing faction pulling his tattered flag along with him so that he and his fellow neocons could profit of the blood of MY brothers! He turned on a fellow soldier and a good friend, John Kerry, just for “Party Loyalty”. He turned on his fellow veterans and the active duty military! He is not honorable…his service 40 years ago was but he no longer is.

Enough already. Do you have another example of where your character held up? Tell the time about when Keating approached you and you turned him down. Wait that didn’t happen.

Tell the time where you stood by your wife after her car accident. Oh nevermind.

Since those wont work I have written some answers for questions you might see.

“Senator McCain. A lot of people don’t have healtcare, what do you think about that”.

McCain- you know, when i was in a prison camp for 5 years. I didn’t have healthcare. And i was in pretty bad shape. A time came when i was given the opportunity to come home. I had a choice to make. And thats what people want in their healthcare. Choice”

Question- What do you think about our criminal system-

McCain- “I know a lot about being incarcerated. I was held in a prison camp for 5 years.

Question What do you think about global warming.

McCain- When i was in a prison camp, it was hot. I was in that prison camp for 5 years. I can’t imgaine it getting any hotter. We need to do something about global warming.

Question-What do you think about the economy-

McCain- When i was in a prison camp for 5 years as a prison of war, from serving the country. We did it to keep the country safe and the economy safe. I will do what i have to do, just like i did for the 5 years that i was a prisoner in Vietnam.

Question- What do you think about stem cell research?

McCain- An interesting fact here, the concept of stem cell reasearch happened at the same time that i was a prisoner in vietnam.

Question- What is your position on the US as it relates to the world order?

I know a lot about people from the rest of the world, i spent 5 years in a prison camp, because i was serving my country. And in that time. I got to know about the vietnamese people, in fact, one prison gaurd, who was keeping me in my hole in the ground for 5 years, when no-one was looking made the sign of the cross in the sand.

Question- Do you think we have a good education system in the US?

“what i would have done to be able to come back from vietnam and go back to school. In fact, one time, i was given a choice to go home, and I said “Hell no!” Billy Bob my cell mate should go home, because he needs to go back to school. I wasn’t going to leave my buddy behind.

Obama can’t take a stand on anything. Why else would he vote “Present” instead of “for” or Against” something. Check out his voting record in Il and the US Senate. Over 100 “present” votes. No one else even comes close to that. What does that say to you? Also Obama has voted for around a Million dollars a day in pork spending for his state. The top 2% of earners in this country pay over 70% of the taxes. Now with Obama they will need to pay more. Is that fair? Obama is planning on adding over one TILLION dollars of new spending to the Gov. He plans to take most of it away from the military, that sounds just like the Carter years.

It’s a turnoff when someone keeps using this tool to enhance their worthiness.

Democrats will be dissapointed on November 4th when John McCain becomes our next president. All these comments? All from Obama supporters.

84. Josh | 08.26.08

This one is great so I’m going to break it down for you all in sections.

“Several years ago gas price was $2.00 a gallon. The markets were booming! The DOW was 14,093. Democrats wanted Change! Yep, Change! They were voted into control of Congress, and yep, Change we got. $4.00 gasoline, and refusal to allow drilling and exploration for oil, same as they have restricted drilling since 1981.”

Actually, we did want change, change the war that is putting out nation in debt and driving down the dollar, change that allows those oil companies making record profits to get MORE tax breaks. Yes that is some great change, too bad we did not get it.

Also, it was a republican who initiated the ban for drilling off shore and in the wild life habitat.

“Just the “thought” of new drilling and exploration sent Oil prices down, down, down! Of course the Dems say drilling will not have any effect. Now, just “who” is out of touch? Who does not understand the relationship between supply and demand?”

Do you know the relationship between supply and demand? Cause demand has gone down and supply hasnt changed. Oil prices are driven on more than just “Supply and demand” and Gasoline costs are driven by more variables. So unless you know a thing about the economics of Oil, plus shut your food hole.

“Vote Democrat to cut off supply! Then cry that “demand” forces the prices through the roof! Yep, that’s the loony left for you!”

Not a single person says a thing like that, Both candidates have a very similar ideal of dealing with the energy crisis. Obama stands on more investments for alternative, while McCain wants to get more Oil now with less investment in alternative.

But I highly doubt you understand anything besides Democrat or Republican, that would require more than those 2 IQ points in your empty skull trying to start a fire.

I am 23 years old and I will be the first to say that my generation has no clue in life. My generation (generation Y) supports Obama, a man with little experience and someone who has zero comprehension of foreign policy. My father is serving his 3rd stent in Iraq and sometimes I wonder why he does it, especially for those who run their mouths and would never shed one ounce of blood for this country. He does it because he is a man dedicated to his country like McCain. Over 40 months he has spent in that country. If I was called to support this country I would, and with no questions asked. That is our responsibility for past citizens who died for us and for future citizens who deserve the same freedom we have had. My generation needs to open their eyes and change the channel from MTV, VH1 and all those other terrible shows they watch and flip on the news.

As for Jason, he is one of these punks who knows nothing! A POW is something to be proud of and i’m sure if Obama had spent one year in a prison camp he would be using that story every chance he gets. But, the reason you dont hear it from Obama is because he never has. He knows nothing about the military and he is so scarred of that, he decides to call on Biden as a running mate. It shows his weakness! Don’t get caught up in this “CHANGE” Bull-Sh**. It takes a lot more to act upon it then to just say it. We can’t go from Jefferson, to Kennedy, to Clinton to BORRACK OBAMA. He needs a name change before he gets elected to run this country.

And please quit playing the race card. I live in the south and I hear it enough. What is racist will be the number of African American votes Obama gets from that group. Over 90%, I guarantee it. Obama is about as much a communist as Kennedy was, so why call him this. The truth is the two candidates move their position from what they believe for the sake of power. I was a POW in Vietnam. What were we ding there in that illegal war.We were not heroes though there were acts of heroism. But we were the aggressors. We can take no credit from Vietnam and its lucky we are the most powerful country in the world or our leaders like Nixon woul have been up for War Crime charges. The truth is both candidates tak a load of lies, Obama is just the more sophisticated and the more able. But i am waiting to hear some truth. The system is broken. We would have been better off staying under the British like Canada did, a society ten times fairer than ours, but with a smaller , very brave army. We nee to move the government out of Washington. Somewhere mid west and start again. Our history is chequered. Too many bad guys won. Jimmy Carter was the most moral Preident we had.The Kennedys were crooks. I served my country for four years, doing immoral deeds. A. White

To be in the top 2% of income earners in the US you need to have an adjusted growth income (After taxes) of greater than $250,000. (or pre-tax income of roughly $400,000).

Why are you so concerened about their income? Look out for your own. They pay people to look out for their taxes.

Unless your income is over $400,000. If so, congratulations, and i understand why you would vote for the guy who is looking out for the wealthiest 2%.

If you think its so great to fight for this country, why wait to be enlisted instead of enlisting yourself? Its great to talk about duty and honour but if you have none you shouldnt talk of it.

I am 25 and I can honestly say I would serve, but I would not GLADLY serve my country. This was not a war I supported nor is it representative of my ideals. I do not watch Television, I get all of my news from the Associated Press. Unlike you however I am able to think for myself I see that, although Obama maybe a bad selection, McCain definitely is a bad selection.

We could vote for a man we know will do harm to our country, or we can take a chance and see what a man with a vision for a better tomorrow can do.

I highly doubt anyone is every PROUD of being a POW, do you even know what pride is?

Regardless, the point is, being captured, detained and tortured does not make you a viable president, if that were true perhaps we should go to Guantanamo Bay and pick our next Pres as I am sure they are all having a REAL LIFE experience. At least Obama wants change, we all know this government is failing, we know the economy is on edge, and not just locally. Why would you want more of it?

Well his credentials are, he is a self made man who put himself through college, got his degree in Law and went for the senate and while still not WELL known he ran a primary campaign against the favourite (Clinton) and managed a victory.

So he is well educated, young and a dreamer. Sounds like just the right person to pick our nation up from a **** that has no end in sight.

But I guess since you want to go to war but are too afraid to enlist on your own, You’ll be voting for McCain so he can institute the Draft so you may die for a cause that you dont even know.

91. Trip | 08.27.08

I have observed a few traits among conservatives. They believe everything their party tells them. For instance, John McCain spews comments about being a POW and taking care of the military. He did not vote for the new GI bill that would allow military members to pass GI bill benefits on to their families…Obama did. McCain voted against a bill to seek alternate sources for oil and cleaner fuel technology…Obama voted for it. McCain said that Senator Webb’s bill to provide more opportunities for military members to further their education was “too much”. John McCain thinks $5 million is a baseline for “rich”. These are facts. Do the radical conservative thing and dodge them. JFK was elected to the senate at 46 years old and attempted to run as vice president at 49. He was a rookie president wasn’t he? Obama at 47 would be a rookie president. And, if McCain’s 73 year old behind was elected, he would be a rookie too, right? He’s never been president so that would make him a rookie, right. Would you say Hillary would be a skilled president because she actually was in the white house for 8 years? I wouldn’t. I read it in here somewhere…someone said, “Age shouldn’t matter.” Look at both sides if you are going to comment on the age issue.

92. David Benchman | 08.27.08

94. Hamilton | 08.27.08

I suspect many people are irritated with McC894n’s answer on Leno (Don’t talk about my “houses” gaffe - I was a POW for five years! Huh?) for the same reason I am - namely, this is coming from the same GOP machine that brutally ridiculed the voluntary service of John Kerry four years ago. Support the troops (that agree with you). I have never voted for a Democrat in my 27 years of voting, but I will this time around. We cannot afford, financially or morally, four or eight more years of PNAC directed foreign policy. And considering that McC894n pledged to run a a clean campaign, he sure has approved a lot of nasty, first strike ads.

Neither candidate is without blemishes, but do you really want to compare the Obama/Tony Rezko connection to the McCain/Keating connection? I doubt it. A legal, market value land transaction (though ill advised) versus 112K in campaign contributions and nine vacations complete with private jet transportation (repaid AFTER they were disclosed two years later), not to mention the 2 billion in FDIC losses, thank you Mr. Keating.

Shall we compare Obama having a mouthy preacher vs. McC894n being a adulterer that abandoned his wife and children for a rich trophy wife? Now there is some Christian character we can get behind!

How about finishing tops in your class a Harvard vs. finishing <1% in a military LEADERSHIP academy. And McC894n says his strong suit is in military LEADERSHIP!

All of these past transgressions would be left in the past if the parties would campaign on the issues, but that opportunity passed before Obama even had the nomination. The McC894n has chosen the same campaign team and strategy that was so successful for W. In all honesty, it will most likely work. I just pray that McC894n proves to be the somewhat more honorable man that he appeared to be eight years ago as opposed to the GWB clone that he seems to have become.

This is a bright woman—I am proud of Mr. McCain–he truly embodies the independent spirit that is the majority in America at this point in time — he is an independent that realizes in order to make any changes you have to choose one of the two parties and work within that framework to make the necessary changes instead of just talking about it…I am now excited about our future with McCain as president.

How’s about I direct all of you Obama idiots to the Chicago Tribune’s expose on this Daley machine rube? You think Rezko was the worst thing this fool has done? How about running straight over a black female incumbent (see the similarity in this guy’s M.O.?) in the race for the south side Chicago district this ******* claims to be from? This guy shows up in Chicago from nowhere and uses his legal ties to get himself his placement in the senate. Then he does the same to another woman (yes, Hillary) to get himself a shot at the presidency?! No matter how you slice this Novembers’ race….M.L.K. style rioting is inevitable. He loses…they riot. He wins…ever seen the aftermath of a basketball win?….think the homies say..’nuff said.

By the way… that word was jack—… lest all of the race card folks start foaming at the mouth.

Yes I agree! Vote for McCain, aside of his personal life, he believes in making our country a better place, even though he has failed.

Do a little digging into McCain’s “prison camp” stories. It didn’t happen exactly the way he keeps telling people it did. “McCain had a unique POW experience. Initially, he was taken to the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison camp, where he was interrogated. By McCain’s own account, after three or four days he cracked. He promised his Vietnamese captors, “I’ll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital …” Yeah, let’s elect HIM president…yikes.
