Sarah Palin: How do you like me now?
By Jimmy Orr | 09.04.08
If there’s one song the McCain campaign is singing this morning - probably very loudly - it’s Toby Keith’s “How do you like me now?”
Vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin might be humming it too after a speech that’s being called electrifying, amazing, even “Reaganesque.”
The consensus among pundits was that the speech was well delivered and that she gave a confident, forceful performance — no wonder her nickname is “Sarah Barracuda.”
Smooth sailing ahead?
And it should, barring any other unvetted controversies, put the focus back on the soon-to-be Republican nominee John McCain.
Yesterday, it seemed the only ones not doubting the pick were McCain and campaign managers Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt.
In fact, two high profile Republican strategists - thinking they were off-mic - lambasted the Palin pick.
On-mic or off-mic, no one was questioning the pick immediately after the speech.
Palin vs Obama
Comparing her qualifications versus Barack Obama’s? Palin mockingly compared them.
“I was mayor of my hometown,” Palin said. “And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves.
“I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities,” she said to an erupting crowd.
Newsflash
Her message to the media? Get over it.
“I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone,” she said setting up a wallop.
“But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion - I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country.”
The fourth estate
How’d the media react?
CBS’s Bob Schieffer said, “I think she passed the first test. The people in this hall absolutely loved this speech. … Now we’ll see how it plays with the rest of the country.”
“Two things are clear after Sarah Palin made her do-or-die debut before 20-plus million people tonight,” explained Time Magazine’s Jay Carney. “She is amazingly self-confident. And she knows how to nail a speech.”
His colleague Joe Klein agreed calling it ‘brilliant.’
George Stephanopolous lauded the speech on Nightline. “She definitely gets an A,” he said. “It was appealing and funny and warm at times. Very, very tough at times as well. And she really did have an ability to bring these things down to earth, bring it down to earth.”
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer agreed. “She really did hit it out of the park tonight not only here but for millions of Americans watching across the country,” he said.
MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Palin’s role as attack dog? Effective. “She is a torpedo aimed directly at the ship of Barack and Michelle Obama,” he said.
The sourpuss of the group, not surprisingly, was Keith Olbermann. “People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like,” he said dourly.
Even the Obama campaign praised it’s delivery — but that’s where they stopped.
“The speech that Gov. Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush’s speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we’ve heard from George Bush for the last eight years, a campaign spokesman said.
Summing up the evening perhaps best is Tom Shales over at the Washington Post:
“If the Republicans win the presidential election in November, it may well be said that they won it last night — the night that John McCain’s brilliantly screwy choice for a running mate changed from laughingstock to national star,” he wrote.

I’m embarassed.
The way she spoke of her fellow Americans, Obama and Biden. Will she speak that way of the leaders of other countries whom she doesn’t like?
Where’s our civility?
3. Bob Cronberg | 09.04.08
I never saw it coming. I went from blue to red in one hour. Palin is brilliant.
4. liz sharpe | 09.04.08
I don’t need a “star” as a president or vice president. When will this country “get it”? We want S-M-A-R-T…..period!
5. J.Jay | 09.04.08
excellent speaker. However, It looks like it is going to be a republican strategy to call everyone sexist whoever disagrees with Ms. Palin or questions her qualifications. Just exactly what Congress woman Bachmann did few days ago, calling James Carville a sexist. Different times man different times.
6. marc christophe | 09.04.08
Don’t overlook one brief comment that, so far, has passed unnoticed. Sarah Palin mentioned “the haberdasher” Harry Truman last night. Harry was a completely inexperienced VP who was not even “in the loop” on the nation’s WWII strategy and weapons (including the A-Bomb). When FDR died, Truman needed a crash course, and he rose to the responsibilities of office with grit and determination. Palin is inthe Truman mode. Obama is a spineless windbag of ambition who voted “present” 130 times because he is not man enough to commit to a tough decison until others make the choice for him. Obama is the proverbial “warrior who only comes to the field after the battle is over and then shoots the wounded.”
7. Jeff | 09.04.08
She certainly seems like a great Rove republican, good with the smoke and mirrors light on the facts. I would suggest however, that those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. The republicans have thrown a lot of stones over the years, maybe thats why they don’t have any anymore - was this really the best they could come up with?
8. Simon_Jester | 09.04.08
Yes, a small town mayor has actual responsibilities…such as NOT running her town 22 million dollars into debt by the time she leaves office.
She also tried to ban books from the Wassila town library, and then attempted to fire the librarian when they wouldn’t go along.
9. Layden S. | 09.04.08
She is still a horrible choice. She was all for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it. She is an extreme religious conservative that would have us throw out science for religious doctrine in schools. She was a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, which doesn’t think American is good enough for Alaska! As mayor she tried to have books banned from the library. And she hasn’t made one decision or vote related to national security, which is McCain’s whole platform. She was mayor of 8,000, and now she deserves to be a hearbeat away from running the show? It’s a gimmick to pick up votes from single issue voters. No Thanks!
10. Alex | 09.04.08
I likes the speech yesterday right before I went to bed, when I woke up it felt I has eaten something rotten. In hindsight, I really couldn’t find something that made me feel good about her in the speech. She seemed more mean this morning than impressive. I dont like her, I get the same vibe from her as I do our current vice president.
11. buster taylor | 09.04.08
I found Sarah Palin offensive and divisive. I found her sarcastic mocking sad. She did seem a “barracuda” and a “pit bull with lipstick”–both very fierce and deadly animals. I think this country needs thoughtful leaders who are consensus builders not attack animals.
12. Robt. Braam | 09.04.08
Palin is not the problem, McCain is.
The so called religious right blackmailed McCain into taking on Palin. James Dobson, the political figure head of evangelicals, said he was not voting for McCain. So once McCain secured the nomination the campaign went to Dobson to ask what they had to do to get his support. He told them to add someone like Palin. So the old gray mare did what he was told. Now, you’ll notice, Dobson has flipped to supporting McCain. And that is why Palin was such a surprise, She was anointed by a very small select group of people.
And that is why even Republicans disapprove of her intrusion. Her appointment has been termed cynical and gimmicky by traditional conservatives.
McCain didn’t gamble on his campaign, he gambled on our country. McCain’s slogan is Campaign First. That is the problem.

well, how many times have we read and heard the adage that one cannot “make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear”. guess we are about to find out.
14. Viet Tran | 09.04.08
Uh, hellloooo, I saw the speech and it didn’t impress me at all. No issues about energy policy like Obama, no Al Qaeda, no Bin Laden, and most of all, no economy issues???am I the only one who thinks this? I feel like I am taking crazy pills…it’s the same **** as the Bush people gave last time around.
15. Gisele | 09.04.08
To Me she sound fake,,,,,I don’t trust her…..Do you know Alaska is $ 25,Million is the red….If she is a good mother like she say,,,,Why she doest stay home and take care of Her kids,,,,,Charity start at HOME…

I went into the convention season legitimately unsure who to vote for. I genuinely like both McCain and Obama for their moderate policies, calm demeanor, and strong leadership. I don’t believe Obama is too liberal and I don’t believe McCain is too conservative, even though each side would lead you to believe the opposite. But I’m very tired of divisive politics, personal attacks, and fear mongering. In my humble opinion, that is not acceptable on the grand stage of a presidential election, especially after 8 years of the worst partisanship I’ve ever seen. After hearing Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin’s speeches at the RNC, I’m even more turned off to politics. Their comments were demeaning and offensive. While I may not agree with Obama on every issue, I cannot stand and cannot vote for a party that continually feeds on emotional, immature, and personal attacks to distort what really matters. Obama attacked McCain in last week’s speech, but it was on policies – which is what really matters when you get into office. And I found it refreshing that both Obama and Biden praised McCain as a military hero and a friend (in Biden’s case). Please, Senator McCain, stop this nonsense. It’s turning away independents who appreciated you for your ability to rise above partisanship.
17. Tara | 09.04.08
I am a 36 year old woman that registered to vote for the first time this year, before Palin was selected for McCain’s Vice President running mate.
I had every intention of voting for McCain, but due to Palin’s seemingly incompetency in everything from her skills as Governor of Alaska all the way to her methods of raising a family, I will not vote for him and have decided to see what other choices I have as a Republican voter.
How depressing.
18. Arash | 09.04.08
Another crazy fool, like George Bush!! Going to Iraq was not an act of God, it was not a mission given by God to Americans, it was an Israeli plot driven by arms dealers and oil giants. What is the average IQ of Americans anyway? !!
19. Sean | 09.04.08
Why do the Republicans think community organization is something to be dismissed? Is the only experience worth noting governmental experience. I think Palin took one step too far in painting community service in such a negative way.
20. Not Niave | 09.04.08
I don’t need another ultra partisan news source so I won’t be back here again.
21. Eric | 09.04.08
I wonder. While the attacks play well, it really isn’t goin gfor the moderate vote is it?
I doubt that the speech really won over any independents and will only serve to further divide our country. It takes more than sarcastic attacks to solve the serious problems that this country faces and I believe that most people realize this.
22. Carol Rossignol | 09.04.08
I will vote for McCain, Sarah was a superior choice, and more power to them!
23. John | 09.04.08
An idiot trying to appeal to the rest of the idiots, too bad there are so many of them…..we are our own worst enemies.
24. Landrum | 09.04.08
I don’t sare how many Obama laptop voters are spinning this one. Palin just slam dunked the 2008 election for McCain, and in my humble moderate opinion just presented herself for the presidential candidacy in 2012. GO SARAH! The country needs you!
25. COL. A.M.Khajawall [Ret] | 09.04.08
Dear concerned citizens of America and mass media of the U.S.A.
As a concerned disabled American Veteran and American citizen, I consider it my duty and responsibility to address the following critical issues facing the voters of our Greatgrand nation, the United States of America [USA].
The citizens of the United States of America [USA] have the ultimate power and responsibility to elect the Right Ticket with the right joint “temperament, judgment, and statesmanship” to lead our nation as well as change our nation’s present and future moral, political, economic, educational, health care, energy, military, and foundational soul.
In my firm professional, personal, and political opinion, the media should help the common voter to explore and discuss the following attributes of the present Republican and Democratic presidential slates:
1. Does the joint ticket have a calm, cool, and collected ” temper and impulse” [Presidential Temperament]?
2. Does each ticket have sound and sustained “Judgment and Caliber”?
3. Does each ticket have a “presidential depth and degree” in regard to their purpose, policies, and positions?
4. Does each ticket have adequate, “understanding and knowledge” of workings around Washington”?
5. Does each ticket have enough “vigor, wisdom and Vision” for the future of our beloved Great-grand Nation?
6. Does each ticket possess enough joint foreign policy experience and ex-poser based on “American Values, Virtues, Vastness, and strong soul”?
7. Are their campaign talk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, and impulsivity?
If your answer to a majority of the above questions is yes, I suggest you vote for that ticket. As a Independent registered voter I have decided to vote for Obama-Biden ticket. I am sure they will protect our national security, Strong’s, stamina and strong soul. Rebuild our nation from bottom up in all areas of need, OBAMA-BIDEN ticket will once again restore and rebuild our global standing with the use of maximum international humane diplomacy and minimal force if and when indicated.
Yours sincerely,
COL. A.M. Khajawall [Ret] MD., Forensic psychiatrist, Colonel, US-AR / MC Combat Stress Control[Ret], Disabled American Veteran and Iraq Freedom team.
26. Sarcasm alive and well on the national stage | 09.04.08
I thought if folks have liked the last 8 years of Bush’s sarcasm and devisiveness, they’ll definetely love this speech. I thought her remarks did little to convince average Americans she’s qualified to be VP. Her attack dog mentallity and earlier recorded rhetoric steeped in dogma cement the fact that she was a purely political pick to get the evangelicals in a froth. Look where that’s gotten our country over the past 8 years.
Back to the speech, if you like snarkiness, sarcasm and devisiveness, this is your team. She made no dent to me that she can lead.
27. Billy | 09.04.08
She took the 200 million dollars for the Bridge to Nowhere!
She has taken massive amounts in earmarks!
Yeah, the speech was great, as long as nobody does any fact-checking.
I know she’s a woman, and it’s “sexist” to fact check a woman’s speech… but come on! We are talking about someone who might accidentally become president!
29. John Jeter | 09.04.08
Brilliant speech, yes, just the way Americans love them, just like TV: breathy, colorful, pretty and shallow. Woefully lite on policy - drill for more fossil fuels, while an ice shelf the size of Manhattan falls into the ocean from global warming; don’t bother with the economy because hockey moms have the p(l)uck to get through anything; send your son off to an illegal war because only You & Your God Only Own The Trademark On American Patriotism. Americans love snarky, too. Deft, sure, with just the right light touch so that the sexist-elite could accuse Sarah Barracuda of being “bitchy.” But 44 years old, the potential leader of the Free World, an ingenue who uses the same old fear-everything-terrorists, don’t have any new ideas, can’t cure the economy, let’s drill approach to all of our enormous problems, foreign and domestic? Why, that’s not HER problem or the McCain-Palin-Country First ticket’s problem — THAT’s the Media’s problem. Vote the government you think this country, this planet deserves.
30. Charlie | 09.04.08
Citing the deeds that make Governor Palin a “pitbull” would have been far more valuable than simply labeling herself as such. Still, it was a good speech, for what it’s worth.
She struck out with me re: our troops being on a “task that is from God.” Maybe it wasn’t in her address to the nation last night, but it is certainly part of her legacy. Pitbulls for Christ? There’s a Times headline! Anyway…
God should have nothing to do with Iraq or any other war. I am not a big god-fan, but I suspect that those who are might share this feeling.
31. Kathy Smith | 09.04.08
I have been a registered Democrat all of my voting years……………..as of today…I am declaring my vote for Senator John McClain…and proudly I must say. I also have two sons that feel the same.. Governor Palin helped me make my final decesion…Here Here Gov. Palin…Respectfully, Kathy Smith
32. Megan | 09.04.08
Sarah Palin is not a qualified nominee for vice president. For someone who knows absolutely nothing about American policy and just recently got her passport how can she be a suitable canidate? With all the other qualified canidates McCain had to choose from, it is a disgrace to the American people for him to nominate such a person. Our country is frail and behind the times and for John McCain and the Republican party to try to lead us in this direction as they have for the past eight years is ENOUGH! Please save us Obama!
33. Janet Miller | 09.04.08
As I watched her speak last night, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons between this former Miss Congeniality and Sandra Bullock’s character in the movie…especially the line “And if anyone, anyone tries to hurt one of my new friends, I would take them out. I would make them suffer so much that they’d wish they were never born. And if they ran, I would hunt them down.” Sarah could do it, smiling, and even wish for world peace, too!
34. Bob of Garden Grove | 09.04.08
“The speech that Gov. Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush’s speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we’ve heard from George Bush for the last eight years, a McCain campaign spokesman said.
If that is true, then it is also true that McCain-Palin campaign is another four more years of Bush’s policy.
Continue the war in Iraq, dig for more oil, outsourcing jobs to overseas, a cripple economy with the dollar value equals to a yen but still not reaching recession yet, and worse of all are several trillions deficit federal budget.
How horrible.
Palin’s acceptance speech on Sept 4th is a warrant serves to the nature conservationists and environmental protection groups that “Beware of more federal lands will be auctioned to oil companies for drilling.”
35. JoAnne | 09.04.08
I’m a registered Democrat who will be voting for the Rupublican Candidate for president and his vice presidential running mate. Why? Because I like them. No, I don’t love them. I LIKE THEM! I feel good and I feel safe with them running. I liked Obama until his party started attacking the family members of the candidates. I liked him until he acted like a three-year-old and said, “Palin is a good speaker BUT George Bush’s speech writer wrote her speech”. How infantile! Who writes his speeches? Certainly not him alone! I liked him until comments were made concerning a woman being able to be a mother and hold office that were from the dark ages. SO…..you go girl!! You and McCain totally have what our country needs in the way of leadership!
36. Warren Bonesteel | 09.04.08
Plain spoken Sarah.
Anyone who under-estimates here, or who tries to dismiss or disparage her, is making a grave mistake.
Besides, any woman who can hunt, kill, field dress and butcher a two thousand pound moose, and look good doing it, is no one you want to mess with.
37. AF Veteran | 09.04.08
She did excellent stepping up to the plate and doing her job. However, the petty attacks jumping right on ship with the infamous “Parting of the water” nonsense was highly unnecessary and not yet credible from her. America still has no clue who she is except for what the media fiascos have shown us. Furthermore, as a Christian, she should’ve kept the attacks on his policies. I’m waiting for someone from the Republican side of the fence to stop with the childish quip remarks towards Senator Obama. So far, she failed in the category of class. That she can come across down to earth is fine and all but why would anyone want to unify behind trash talk? We’re talking about presidents and possible future presidents here not mayors, governors, or senators. If a more seasoned politician such as Hillary Clinton were to decide and defend Senator Obama and in a tactful manor address all these “funny” things that Governor Palin said, then how can Palin come back? She can’t. If she does, she’ll more than likely lose all the rogue Hillary supporters because of her lack of class. Tough talk goes only so far before people turn a deaf ear to you. I haven’t made up my mind who I intend on voting for but how people treat one another is a big deal for me. On the issues, there’s good and bad on both sides but, I do not want to have a president/vice president elected that is cocky, arrogant with no substance, and most importantly a hypocrital Christian. This is not how a Christian should behave. I was also most shocked at Mike Huckabee’s statement concerning Joe Biden. There’s no truth to the statement he made what-so-ever. I was very surprised by him saying that. I don’t even know if Alaska has as many people as did vote for Joe Biden. Just my opinion.
38. Dee Jay | 09.04.08
BFD. She presented well, a speech that was written for her. It proves nothing.

in the 80s and 90s cindy mccain was completely addicted to prescription painkillers and defrauded an international charity to fund her habit to the point where the charity had to cease operations.
sarah palin has FIVE CHILDREN, one of whom is 4 months old and one of whom is about to make her a grandmother. due to this alone she is completely unfit for the position she is running for. she should be home taking care of her kids, period. there isn’t anything else to say about that.
finally, john mccain is 72 years old. the male life expectancy in the US is 75. he can not even lift his arms above his shoulders. why would anyone vote in this crazy administration.
41. Laura | 09.04.08
sara Palin is a game-changer. The pin-head liberal men in the media are running around needing their diapers changed because they know it too. Sara Palin is the women’s choice and we don’t care a witt about Reverend Jerimiah Wright’s studen in anti-American 101 racist mentoree Barack Hussein Obama’s tax hike plan for soaking the rich! Higher taxation will drag the economy down - besides, we’re not proud of Obama for the first time, or any other time.
Go Sarah!!!
42. Mike, Philadelphia | 09.04.08
Unfortunately, Palin’s speech was merely a “red meat” speech, on par with Guiliani’s speech. Having a chance to shine, Palin opted for “gutter politics” in personally belittling Obama while failing to provide any specifics to bolster her own credentials. For instance, she said she had been unfairly criticized for being a small town mayor, and said “let me explain what a small town mayor does.” She proceeded to riducule Obama, saying a small town mayor “is kind of like a community organizer [drawing laughs and applause], but with responsibilities.” Completely missing was the promised explanation of what exactly she did in that position or any other that qualifies her to be in the White House. To be fair, she is a decent public speaker. However, it seemed obvious that her content had been written by McCain’s “Rove troop” and consisted mainly of wise cracks intended to belittle Obama. This might have worked for the Republican “faithful,” but Americans overall will demand higher character and more substance before deciding to cast a vote for her.
43. Maria | 09.04.08
If this campaign is about CHANGE, then how can an intelligent person argue that community organizing is somehow less meaningful than so-called “executive” experience? Community organizing is about helping people help themselves, its about a commitment to “bottom-up” politics as opposed to “top-down” policies. Palin’s derision of community organizing exposed how little she really knows about REAL change. It doesn’t come from Governors, or even small town mayors. It comes from the PEOPLE. This was a fundamental contradiction of Palin’s speech, and one that went unnoticed by most of the pundits who praised her.
45. Maureen | 09.04.08
Sarha, I like you even LESS after your speech than I did before… I do not want a “bulldog” near the trigger of war. What’s the connotation except for the image of an animal that is unpredictable and ruthless? You were a troubling mix of Annie Oakley and Annie Coulter.
46. An actual free mind | 09.04.08
So Palin, a complete political tool from the get-go, delivers a speech designed for her ‘character’, and is then re-inforced, forcefully (since they’ve no choice, they’re in it to win, even if McCain’s pulling the big strings without them), by the GOP. Jee, I TOTALLY didn’t see that one coming. They aren’t going to win this one.
National Star, that’s a riot. Spotlight for sure, but star, **** (OR SORRY, “HECK”-) no.
47. Moe Cephus | 09.04.08
Where does she come off talkin like that about Barak. I am a Proud DEMOCRAT! everyone in our party knows that a womens place is in the kitchen or Laundry room. Just look at what happend to Hillary. Shee needs to throw away that rolex because there is a clock on the stove.
48. AHJ | 09.04.08
The fact that she was clear, presentable, and gave a nice winsome smile does not gainsay the fact that she also lied through her teeth at several points during the speech.
Is this something the ‘pubs now take for granted?
Would they actually not prefer a candidate who spoke the truth?
50. Scott | 09.04.08
So I guess all the criticism that Palin has been taking ever since she was picked we’re just all supposed to overlook? Is she not allowed to stand up and defend herself? I think most all these comments on here were made by a bunch of Democrats! I thought the speech was excellent! The Liberals and the media finally got what they deserved, and now they don’t like it! How funny! I had concerns when Palin was announced, but after last night, I know who I’m voting for, and it sure isn’t Osama!!
51. johnk | 09.04.08
To buster (First comment). I live in Florida where it gets pretty hot. It’s sad you can’t admit she got you guys and she got you good. Good for her. She is a star and yes, you won’t know what to do with her. As far as your comment about us Republicans being “Oily pigs”. Let me describe you and your ilk. Last summer I got out of my boat and nearly stepped on a large catfish lying on the dock. I went to push it into the water with the side of my sneaker. It basically became eviscerated right onto my foot. The smell was outer worldly. The stink was beyond description. That sir is how I would describe you and your liberal friends!

Alex said: “I dont like her, I get the same vibe from her as I do our current vice president”
To Alex: You are very perceptive. The people who wrote Palin’s speech wrote essentially the same speech for Cheney to deliver in his 2000 speech. Deja Vu.

I find it hilarious that “Chirstians” are so quick to get nasty when things do not go their way. I thought being a Christian was about showing the light of Christ to the world? I see no light of Christ in the McCain/Palin ticket or campaign. I certainly saw no Christ in her speech, I saw divisiveness, hate, pettiness, and an almost junior high bullying going on. I did not see a leader that would reach across and work with those they may not agree with and try to reach a compromise to make it work. I did not see someone that understands that their personal opinions cannot govern their actions when they are elected by the people, for the people. It cannot go on like this, it has to change, it has to move forward.
54. Jim Lewis | 09.04.08
I was really juiced when I heard Sara Palin speak when she was introduced as the Rep. VP candidate. After the excitement of the moment wore off I thought of something that a lot of folks have mentioned. With an apparently close family, as it appears they have, would she be able to compartmentalize her attention to detail to deal with the demands of being Vice President and a loving Mom and wife. After Ms. Palin’s speech last evening, I have no worries. This girl is the real thing. She served notice that “Mr. or rather Ms. Smith can indeed go to Washington”. She is Americana. She is the embodiment the common person. I have no idea of her knowledge of the federal government, but I feel by what she has shown, that the pure basic American common sence will serve her well for the demands of the office. I am sure the media feels they are intrical to the vetting process, and they are probably a bit miffed and left out by Mr. Mac. As others have stated, ” GET OVER IT”.

I don’t give a darn what any of the other candidates have to offer.
Sara Palin is more qualified than anyone else on the ticket…
I wish she were running for the top job….
And as far as ANY of the SMEARS are concerned,,,If they are true or not what difference does it make? How many of these people making these remarks have clean hands…….Well I know for a fact,,, because they are all human too
not a single one….

An impressive speech by Mrs. Palin to her Base. This has wittingly or unwittingly confirmed the following:
Strong rhetoric remained short on specifics or any credible solution to America’s problems of today and years to come.
Youthful and pleasant appearance with smiles lost its appeal with excessive sarcasm and cheap shots. She has a right to that as a politicians. Consequently, is that an approach for ‘reform’ Not even in dreams. She shortchanged her own potential message.
Her claims and wish for sympathetic view on her credibility via the terms defining her as ‘Hockey Mom’ and ‘PTA member or leader’ and grass-roots fighter in Alaska may be good for her. This is completely lost immediately after she ridiculed ‘community organizer’. Guess what? By hating media, news and shying away from people or reality, she missed the point by following the speech-writer rhetoric that she herself practiced the skills of being an organizer in her community. The credibility in her expression was lost.
Mrs. Palin constantly reminded of G.W. Bush. A pretty face, telling what the crowd wants hear and going on and on with feeding frenzy may be natural behaviors in her base, but this is precisely what the ‘establishment’ is.
The closeness or coziness to oil and energy businesses does not make her a maverick even after establishing certain contracts or facilities in Alaska. That is the establishment. Remember in 2000 and 2004, those who claimed ‘knowing something about the oil industry and energy’ are the ones who escalated the energy crisis. Thus, Mrs. Palin may bring on, yet again, the realities of Bush. There should be ample opportunity to observe Mrs. Palin, the campaign PR process and the similarities with GW Bush. RNC just got a female version of Bush, so no wonder the base is ecstatic.
McCain camp completely failed in convincing this independent voter to trust McCain-Palin or the RNC to look at them for credible change. They are just not tuned to the needs and urgency that America faces. Mrs. Palin’s performance was a successful stage-craft, ensured by the Establishment.
It encouraged and instilled confidence for me to look at Barack Obama and his plain talk, trustworthiness and enabled me to support Obama-Biden by making a donation for the first time. I am sure that many independent voters, who think for themselves in the best interest of our nation will do what I did.

Listen to the Obama men on this blog. They are so afraid of Sarah Palin. You liberal hacks know very well that Sarah Palin hit it out of the park last night; you despise strong women, not Sarah Palin’s speech. You guys never want to give a woman her due.
I think you mean little wenies need to put a hand on each cheek and see if you can pull your collective head out of Obama’s backside!

If someone is great at delivering a speech that another person wrote, should that qualify her for potentially being our President?
I will read the Gettysburg Address on YouTube…if 10 million people view it and comment that my delivery was excellent, will I be a candidate for 2012?
Incidentally, I am the president of a company…so since I am an “executive” I guess, according to McCain’s definition, I am more qualified than both him and Barack.
Is determining whether hunting caribou by plane what you call executive decision making?
I just decided that we should skip hockey practice tonight. Look at my analytical skills - I should be VP!
Correct me if I am wrong, but graduating with a JD from Harvard requires serious brains.

What does it tell about a person who can not control her own family? How shameless is person is when they bring their pregnant teenage daughter in front of the nation? What are they telling the rest of the teens? - its OK to get pregnant? If you can not take care of your kids, how will you take care of a nation? What makes her conservative - value she practiced or value she talks about? I am totally disgusted by conservatives for changing the definition.
60. sjabad | 09.04.08
During the entire speech, not a single time was the economy, or the forclosure crises mentioned. If these animals are allowed to run the country for another 4 years, we are all in a lot of trouble.
61. Arthur King | 09.04.08
Am I the only one who found her pre-fabricated speech (the McCain campaign said it needed editing, since it was initially written for a man to deliver) a flop? She came across as George W. Bush in drag, perhaps not surprisingly considering she was using one of his veteran speech writers. It sounded like one of the harangues that has driven the Bush Presidency down to record levels of disapproval. Is that “change”? Is it “change we can stomach”?
Sorry, after the debacle of the last eight years I am unwilling to sit still and listen to a nasty-mouthed lecture from a political opportunist, who is happy to play fast and loose with the facts in the interests of better attack lines. One comment that stuck in my mind was a jibe about reading al Qaeda members their rights. If every arrest of a suspected terrorist got the right guy, or gal, or child, then I would cheer along with her, but her throwaway line serves to trivialize the very real issues of rendition, torture, killings of those in custody and the arrest and detention of many who later are proven to have done nothing whatsoever. That is a national shame, not fodder for a red meat joke. Palin may well be a “pit bull in lipstick”, but seriously, is that what we are looking for in our President? A shallow and combative cartoon figure?
62. Frank | 09.04.08
She may be a tough soceer mom, but just because you’re tough doesn’t mean you qualify for the second highest position in the country. She may be great at reading a teleprompter, but let’s she how she fares at a live debate with Joe Biden. The speech last night was all about image and very sparse on the actual issues. It’s so easy to jab at your opponents and their weaknesses, but what happens when you actually have to sit down at the table and try to solve all the problems that are placed in front of you? Palin should be at home with her kids, her pregnant daughter and her newborn baby with Down’s Syndrome, because there is enough problems in her own household to keep her fully occupied.

I just wanted to cry this morning. She is just as bad as all the “ole boys”… and I have never supported Hillary but I do feel she has been cheated, she worked really hard and spent a lot of money and got a lot of votes and lost very respectably, and this woman just gets handed the veep slot, what the **** is wrong with this country? I have been supporting Obama from the start and will continue to, I just pray to God that he gets in there and community services us all out of this crazy mess!

Strange how Obama’s & Biden’s speech writing is not discussed. Well, then again, we would not want to remind the youth of America that Joe B had problems writing his own speeches in the past. What is that called again? Plagiarism! Look that up on Google with Neil Kinnock.
On to Gov Palen’s leadership, when people are handing out money, good leaders get in line to help her people. How many of Obama’s student grants did he give back to help his country? When people are handing out money, go get it. When you are handing it out, that is a problem. How much did Sen Binden and Obama send home? Or did Obama can vote “present” on that too? Or is he busy writing a new book? Joe can copy it for him!
65. Lakbima | 09.04.08
What a speech. Now the Obama crowd is saying what a mean spirited and sarcastic one the speech was. Do we have to give him a pacifier and a blankie? Going home to victimsville aren’t they. I am a member of a group that occupies a lower rung in the ladder of victim hood, by the way. Also, our kind is politically/journalistically worthless (a group where the stereotype about us are not stigmatized, so pseudo diversity proponents can hold on to stereotypes without getting branded by a ism, ist, phobia and anti, labels, tattoos and patches by the msm i.e. left media, Hollywood).
66. Huh | 09.04.08
If Palin has so much more “executive experience” than Obama, why isn’t she running for President with McCain as VP? It’s sad how gullible the people of this country are.

I am a single, Middle class woman ,and a Small business ownwer . I thought Sarah Palin was brilliant last night. Not only can Governor Palin speak to my middle class concerns; she is middle class. Before last night I didn’t have any one to vote for - now I do! Her hands on experience in local and Statewide Goverment will be a real asset to John McCain and our Country.

The GOP ticket is a trainwreck! I don’t care how much a PTA mom tries to set herself up. For those of us looking towards “POLICY”, what I heard was disheartening. “…a war with victory in our sights.” WHAT? Can I look through those glasses you are wearing Gov. Palin, please? “We need to produce more domestic oil.” Let me see, we have known about this issue since the oil embargo in the early 70’s (40+ years), we don’t need more oil, we need new technologies! Get a clue, the soalr wind, geothermal statement was an after thought to her primary energy message. “I didn’t accept the Bridge to nowhere…” NO? But you did accept the money, lets get the facts straight. Also, while holding the “executive office” of mayor in a town of 10k, she hired DC lobbyists to win over 27 million in congressional earmarks. That’s roughly the same amount that Boise, Idaho (pop 200,000) receives. Remove the character attacks and what is left? Not much and what was presented is precisely what we have been seeing for the last 8 years. I’m glad I don’t have a reservation on that train, because it is going to crash and burn….soon and hard!
70. Pam | 09.04.08
Twenty-five years ago Palin would have been called a space-cadet. What do you call a grown-up space-cadet who makes it into a position of power?
This kind of person is dangerous. She has been shown to use her power to try and manipulate personal issues and she wouldn’t hesitate to impose her radical Christian fundamentalist views on the rest of us.
She is anti-abortion even in the case of rape and incest, she rejects sex education in schools, she thinks preaching abstinence is the solution to teen-pregnancy despite her own daughters’ failure to abstain, and she is anti-evolution and global warming. She supports the same “free-market” that brought us a crashing economy and huge debt.
Haven’t we learned anything from 8 yrs. of George Bush pushing his own brand of economics and morality on the rest of us and manipulating science to his own ends?
Give me a break! If anyone votes for this GOP ticket then they deserve what they get.
71. Malby | 09.04.08
I sat here last night watching the Republican elite Beltway-insiders thrash Beltway-insiders as if they (Thompson, Guiliani et al.) were all naifs in the political system. How can the Republican party even begin to suggest that it can bring “change” after its last choice brought the country to its knees? The same operatives are in the back pulling the strings here too.
I had hope for McCain at one time, but he has clearly drunk the Karl Rove Kool-Aid and conceded most of his principles to partisanship. “Hypocrisy” (the leaders) and “delusion” (the Republican faithful) doesn’t even cover it. Watching Cindy McCain argue that Ms. Palin has foreign policy experience because her state is closest to Russia, or hearing others of whom we expect more, like Gingrich, actually contend that she’s the governor of the “largest” state or commander-in-chief of the Alaska National Guard is revolting.
72. sbdozier | 09.04.08
Did she really liken herself to “a pitbull w/ lipstick?” In essence, isn’t she saying that she is a bi***? What would have happened if the “liberal media” called her that? Republicans are always touting that “experience” B.S. as the only qualificaton needed to lead. Give me a break, that’s why countries like China and Japan are kicking our butt in education and the economy, because they believe that in order to lead, one most be moral, educated, and compassionate. I really hope people dont fall for it…she was chosen for 1 reason and 1 reason only, and that is because Alaska is oil-rich! She said nothing of substance, maybe if she read more books instead of banning them, then she would be more informed on the issues.
73. Jon | 09.04.08
I liked her and she seems to be a strong candidate. Obama’s resume looks bleak when compared to Palin’s executive experience.. Obama does not have a record and that is a problem. I didn’t watch Palin’s speech. I intended to, but after about ten minutes of listening to Mitt Romney I just couldn’t stomach anymore of it. What I saw of the convention amounted to a cult-like level of mass hypnosis and delusion. Mr. Romney was up there blaming the state of our government on the Democratic party. It was surreal, and everyone at the convention was obviously pretending otherwise. The Republican party is incapable of the integrity required to acknowledge the extent of failures and the depth of damage they have cause in the past eight years.
But all is not lost. The Republican party showed last night that they are still highly competent in two areas — being dishonest about their own actions, and, of course, hating those who disagree with them. Hate and dishonesty is all the Republican party has left. Perhaps all they ever had.
75. Jim | 09.04.08
Kate — You clearly are an arch Democrat — that’s fine, it’s your right. But you should be embarassed to talk about “civility”. Look at the press releases and mockery the Obama campaign levied when Palin’s selection was announced. And where was “civility” when Obama’s campaign staff went on TV after Joe Lieberman’s speah and blatantly called him a “liar”. I listened to the speech (and I’m an independent generally, voting for Republicans about 2/3 of time and Democrats 1/3 of time) and the points the Obama campaign was making was nonsense. They were taking words out of context and ignoring words like “significant”. BOTTOM LINE — if you WANT civility you have to BE CIVIL — and the Obama campaign has demonstrated it cannot or will not be.

I can’t believe the best choice of all the Republican women in this big country, is a beauty queen! All smart and well qualified women that are not so “Hot” looking, should be angry at this. It sounds like many of you didn’t like hearing Palin and don’t even the sound of her name. You’d better get used to it since you’re going to be hearing it for the next eight years! Palin; Palin; Palin; Palin; Palin; Palin; Palin; Palin; Palin; Palin; Palin; etc.
I think it has a nice ring to it, sort of like ‘Reagen’!

14 Viet Tran: Are you sure you were watching?
Yes, she discussed growing the economy and allowing small buisness owners to stay in buisness, and a tax strategy that allows companies to keep their employees. She discussed the element of return on equity, essential to small upstarts, she spoke at length about our need for energy independence, noting that drilling will not be the ultimate cure, acknowledged that its a quick fix. She spoke about increasing the use of natural gas, produced here in the U.S.
You must have also missed the part where she talked about protecting our country against terrorism and honored our troops. You must not have watched the speech if you missed ALL OF THAT.

Regarding Marc Christof’s (number 6, above)comment about the supposedly inexperienced Truman: Harry Truman had been elected US Senator from Missouri in 1934 and again in 1940. Thus he had years of experience at the national level when he bacame vice president in 1944 and president in 1945. Granted that FDR kept him out of the loop, it is nevertheless the case that his experience prior to nomination for vp dwarfs Palin’s.
82. Dave Miner | 09.04.08
She is not qualified. Being a woman is supposed to mean her record cannot be questioned. That would be “sexist”. Like Bush she is a used car salesman who tells you this car is “clean” but forgets to mention that the car was underwater in Katrina’s flood waters. It’s all a big con. Remember when Bush convinced the country that he was a “leader”. He didn’t mention what kind of leader; one who led us to the gates of ****. Please, America, smarten up. We will be toast because of this kind of “leadership”.

84. Laura | 09.04.08
She belittled community organizers to great Republican applause. Community organizers did a lot more than the Republican party to assist those devastated by Katrina. She didn’t speak to her view that abortions should not be available to women and girls that are raped. She claimed that she’d be supportive of special needs children yet her party cuts human services, aid to public schools, etc. Evaluating her by a speech written by Rove and others is like saying I’m an excellent student because I submitted an A quality paper written by a classmate.
85. Chuck | 09.04.08
Just another nasty republican. The sad part is Christian groups support people like her, thinking she actually gives a damn about them. The Republican Party is about one thing-getting richer than they already are. And they have poor white people lining up to vote for them. You FOOLS!
A republican in office means your bills will be the same or worse, you will pay more for gas, college cost will go up even higher, and all you’ll have to show for your support is debt, worries, and no future. One more thing, and let’s not sugar coat it, this election is about “race.” Obama inspires people, he and Biden are the better choice, but the fact that Obama is black scares the **** out of white America. Get Over It! I have serve for 20 years in the military, and I love this country, but at times, I really hate what we do.

Jimmy Carter = 4 years
Ronald Reagan + George H.W. Bush= 12 years
Bill Clinton = 8 years
George W. Bush = 8 years

Who did more to break Washington? Let’s heed the Republican call for ‘Change’ and remove them from office.
87. americanlady | 09.04.08
I agree Palin does an excellent job delivering a speech.
But the strategy of the Republican party has not changed:
1-avoid talking about all the mistakes they have been making while they have been in control of Washington
2-avoid talking about the issues that are causing ordinary Americans to suffer
3-be mean and divisive and demonize Americans who disagree with your opinion, then figure that America will forgive you for your lack of civility, as long as you follow up the attacks by reminding America that you love the troops and God.
4-tell lies with great emotional conviction, so that viewers believe them
5-scare Americans into believing they are in imminent danger from numerous world foes and that their Pres & VP must be warmongers in order to keep America safe.
America has been fooled by this strategy in the past 8 yrs, but they know better now and they are not going to vote for a wolf in sheep’s clothing (i.e., more Bush/Cheney politics, in the form of pretty lady Palin)
88. Scared-to-Death | 09.04.08
Q: How do you like me now?
A: Even less then when it was just your stand on the issues I disliked.
I watched her speech, and Rudy Giuliani’s before her, and couldn’t help thinking, “God, how divisive is this race getting?” I couldn’t fall asleep afterward, just thinking about the negativity they’ve injected into this election. TALK ABOUT ISSUES!!! Stop slinging mud!
They really are trying to frame this election in the context of a “culture war”. For the extreme conservative right, we’re not all Americans; there are good Americans and bad Americans. If you’re not inline with their beliefs, then you may as well be an “Islamic Terrorist” (Did she say that, or was it Giuliani? It has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with respect for their fellow Americans, Islamic or otherwise).
89. The Bulldog | 09.04.08
At first, I questioned the Palin choice. I, too, am a working mother — single mother of three. I, too, have been discounted because of my personal circumstances. However, ever time someone has discounted my competency, I have alway risen to the occasion to undermine the cynic’s view. I know that in a man’s world I cannot only be is equal in merits but I must be superior than most to even attain the cynic’s standard of equality in their eyes. I also know, without a doubt, that I take on more than most and see better results than most because being discounted without merit is not an option. Do not underestimate the value of resolve and tenacity in the those who appear to be the underdog. Those particular people change the world and do so with the purest of intentions.
I do not care about Palin’s religious values or pro life values even though they are contrary to my own — I care that she is a protector. I firmly believe that she will protect America’s future because that is what she inherently knows how to do and it came across. My vote was cast last night.

PALIN’S MAYORAL EXPERIENCE
Before Palin the city of Wasilla (5000 souls at the time) had no budget deficit. It needed a sewage treatment plant.
Mayor Palin left the city with a sportplex complex, a lawsuit, strip malls, a higher personal taxes, a $22,000,000 debt, and still no sewage treatment facilities.
She’s the next George Bush with lipstick.

Here are the questions that no one in the obamer camp answers. What has he done? Why did he vote present 130 time? I would not trust this guy with my car much less our country. I don’t like her. At all. I’m sure she’s been good for Alaska, and I’ll bet she’s a lot of fun to toss a few beers back with (if you’re not a librarian and you’re on her good side, that is). All last night proved to me was that she could read effectively from a TelePrompter (that’s her sportscaster experience) and wrinkle her nose on cue. The bulk of the words in that speech were not hers, nor were they written by her, and the message was the same tired, divisive saber-rattling from the W. campaign.
The first half of Palin’s speech sounded as though she was running for student council. The second half, she gleefully squatted WAY down in the gutter about Obama. I watched her speak from a friend’s home here in Houston, Texas–a red place if ever there was one–and there were audible gasps from the crowd (Republicans!) there when Palin acidly assaulted Obama’s so-called “tour of personal discovery.” I think her canned attack is going to ultimately backfire–love Obama or hate him, but he’s consistently taken the high road in his campaign and just reiterated this morning Palin’s family was off-limits.
So much for courtesy.
93. Carol | 09.04.08
I am disappointed at the way many people on these message boards reduce others to simple caricatures — the way some here know next to nothing about another human being yet are so quick to denounce someone as a “bad mother” or “completely” incompetent — based upon one or two decisions they didn’t agree with.
It is symptomatic of a severe personality disorder when one cannot grasp complexity in other people — when one can only see another as either completely saintly or completely evil. And I see a lot of complete demonization going on by people who know next to nothing about Palin — or Obama for that matter.
I’d like to think that voters were more sophisticated than that — that they formulated important electoral decisions using their highest thought processes — not the most immature simple-mindedness they are capable of.
I think it would be great to have discussions that said, “I like this and this about Palin and this and this about Obama, but I don’t like this and oh, was I mistaken about that, and this may be very good but that is more important to me….”
94. Johann | 09.04.08
In her speech, Sarah Palin referred to Democrats as worrying too much about whether someone had read a suspected terrorist their Miranda rights while the country is under a terror threat. This, in itself, shows scant regard - not unlike the current administration - for the cherished legal principle of “innocent until proven guilty”.
A little bit later, she refers and makes quite a deal about John McCain’s time in the “Hanoi Hilton”, confined to a tiny cell, tortured and having “seen evil” at the hands of his North Korean captors.
It must have been a really hard time for him, and getting through it tells much about the man’s courage and character, for sure.
But wait…
The North Koreans are not the first nor the last nation to do that to enemy combatants, surely?
I cannot help but wonder whether the “enemy combatants” (if that be the case, should not the Geneva Convention as well as the American Bill of Rights apply?) and terror suspects (innocent until proven guilty, or guilty until proven innocent?) locked up in Guantanamo Bay and other secret locations by a Republican administration, humiliated and tortured by security forces for information or revenge, feel very similarly about their experiences at the hand of their American captors?
Or do the same moral principles and judgments not apply if committed by Americans against non-Americans? Is it only evil when North Koreans commit such actions, but not when Americans do?
As a principle, should the American Bill of Rights not also apply the dealings of American official (and “unofficial”) bodies towards all people, whether they be American or not, or whether such dealings take place in the USA or not?
Clearly, Republicans seem to think not.
This scares me. Deeply.
Voting for this crowd should be considered as making voters morally complicit in the way the administration deals with people in places like Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere.

I find it interesting that liberal women are suggesting that Sarah Palin should be staying at home to “take care of her family”. These are the same women that would lose their collective minds if such a thing were suggested in regard to their personal life. I have heard the unending snipes about Mrs. Palins inability to raise her own children. Looks to me as if she has done a fine job thus far. The same liberal whackos who are screaming about her unwed pregnant daughter fail to realize that Mr. O’Bamas Mama was a teenage unwed pregnant girl as well. I haven’t heard them criticizing his grandparents for that.
As a matter of fact the only criticism I have heard regarding his grandparents was from him, calling his grandmother “a typical white person.” The unbelievable bias in the media is so evident, for example, the media jumped all over that Todd Palin had a DUI 20 years ago, but Mr. O’Bama got a pass on his admission of doing drugs around that same time period in his life. Not only did he get a pass on it, he was applauded for having said it. Fair and balanced the media are not! Reverend Wright and William Aires are no big deal to our media, but a pregnant teenager and an old DUI are the ultimate sins. There is something wrong with this picture.
I must say, for a time it was unclear to me for whom I would cast my vote. Then one day it dawned on me that I simply could not vote for Mr. O’Bama because I am just a “typical white person” like his grandmother. Was Sarah Palin too harsh, **** no!!!! She was right on and I hope the American people wake up from there worship of this racist, radical, and completely fake O’Bama before it is too late!

99. matt | 09.04.08
I’m an independant, who thus far has not bought into Obama. He appears to be nothing more than a cult of personality. In Obama, is nothing but a vague message of “change”. Two days ago I wondered where my vote would go given my displeasure with Obama and the negative media driven towards the republican VP nomination. Last night I made up my mind. The only thing better than the content of that speech was the delivery. I never in my life thought I would vote republican but I will now. Obama is nothing more than an elitist who thinks he has an ability to work government and politics better than the rest despite the fact that his political track record has not yet proven this ability.

I watched Sara’s speech and I did not find anything that suggests that she should be the next “Dick Cheney”. We know Bush was closely working with Cheney and many believed that in fact Cheney has been the “president” of USA for the last eight years.
If Republicans expect Sara to be the next Cheney she is not. She is smart, populist, however, she is not ready to lead this country in time of danger or takes us out of this difficult economic time. We need a president who picks the right person not to win votes like McCain by picking a woman as his running mate.
The McCain Sara ticket is not a winning ticket and many Republicans will be turned away and vote for promising ticket Obama and Baiden. We need new policy not dusting off the failed Bush policy which McCain is part of.
The allegation that we won the war in Iraq because of McCain supported “surge” is not true. What happen is the killing of American soldiers stopped similar to Basra in Southern Iraq where the British suffered less causalities not because of any surge but by letting the factions in Iraq do the fighting and we have not heard the British declaring that they won the war in Basra with or without surge.
Why not McCain talk about winning the war in Afghanistan? Because there was no surge over there?
The biggest problem for McCain is he supported a disastrous war in Iraq that took many lives and cost tax payers hundreds of billions of dollars and he wanted to get credit for it rather than be ashamed of it.

Unfortunately, I learned very little about Gov Palin last night.
I see this election as a choice of ignorance vs thoughtfulness. It’s obvious that the GOP sees the electorate as dimwitted. Just the choice of Gov Palin, alone, suggests this.
To me, Gov Palin’s speech, last night, said nothing.
She’s still being shielded by the GOP, and has refused all requests for interviews.
So, what did we learn last night?
We learned that Gov Palin, can read a pre-programmed speech.
We learned that Gov Palin, is not an independent-thinking woman, since she’s letting others pull her strings, like a puppet. If she was, she’d demand to answer Media questions… not, go into hiding before & after her speech.
We learned that the Media continues to acquiesce, when the GOP accuses them of bias.
To me, as long as Gov Palin got up to speak, the Media would fawn over her… and we see that’s true. Just as, in the VP debate, if she shows up, she’ll win.
Me, I’d like to know if she has any understanding, of the complex domestic & foreign policy issues, facing our Country. But, the GOP & the Media think a pre-programmed speech, read by Gov Palin, is something to go *wild* about.
The dumbing down of America continues.
And the only question I have, has ignorance superceded thoughtfulness in this Country?
That will decide this election.

All the liberals are out taking aim and conservative sites and other sites to make people believe they are disliking of Palin. Speaking of smoke and mirrors most of the people found posting are being linked to either the other campaign or liberal bloggers! She is a tough woman and everyone under estimated her. Guess the left got fooled again. The attacks on this woman are going to back fire in November. Look for a LANDSLIDE victory for McCain/Palin.
104. BAG | 09.04.08
Some of you knuckleheads were going to vote for the socialist, regardless of Palin’s performance tonight. So, please, spare us the tripe that her delivery pushed you to Obama.
Divisiveness in politics is a good thing. When there is gridlock the damage our gov’t can do is limited. When there is no divisiveness, that is when the real damage gets done.
I can’t believe some of you would even consider voting for the socialist. With both the house and the senate stocked with Democrats, do you really want to give the Democrats a blank check? Unless you like working till October for the gov’t, I suggest you think about a gridlock. Don’t worry, I’m sure there will still be plenty of redistributions to satiate you underachieving half-wits.
106. Craig | 09.04.08
I am an energized conservative this morning! While not perfect she voiced exactly what needed to be said regarding her experience and Obama’s lack thereof. She will connect with small town America and many working moms who feel a kindred spirit with her balance of family and professional life.
She is what was needed to energize and mobilize conservatives into action. As was said last night by many commentators, “GAME ON”!
107. cta | 09.04.08
Nice speech, and a photogenic family.
But not convinced. I think the whole experience thing is a red herring - yes, she has more experience than any of the other three national candidates, including McCain. But I don’t think for a moment that she is more qualified to be president than he is.
I am a moderate Republican who was inclined to vote for McCain (I voted for Reagan, 41, Dole and even 43 the first time) - he could’ve had me with Lieberman, Pawlenty, Ridge or even Romney. But I am tired of the right wing of the party making ideology-based decisions that have pretty much tanked our economy and gotten us into a war we never should have been involved with. And I am dismayed that there seems to be only one ‘right’ answer to every social issue, be it teaching science in schools, sex education and reproductive rights - personally, I do not want to be told by any government that there would only be one choice for my daughters - so I laud the Palin family’s decision to have the grandchild, I emphasize that it is their FAMILY decision.
So, this time I’m going to give the Dems a chance.
108. framecop | 09.04.08
Her delivery was pathetic. The timing was off, and she was robotic. Maybe she’ll stop licking her lips at some point, like the snake flickering its tongue that she is.
People these days only want a “show.” They don’t care what’s actually being said, because if they did, they wouldn’t be impressed.
110. bill | 09.04.08
Palin is Great……….I only wish she was at the top of the ticket……..and did notice a lot of liberal democrats found their way to put comments here………ever notice….the liberals are always looking for something to ***** about…….they will always find it too……..

You have got to see this video! Jon Stewart highlights republican hypocrisy unplugged!!!
Absolutely hysterical, but also very frightening.
Gotta love John Stewart from reporting the truth!!

This was a roll in the mud. Everything was a snarky divisive shot. Isn’t American capable of greatness anymore? How can we possibly fight the never-ending culture war and snipe at our countrymen the way this petty, small speech did. I thought it was an embarassment. I don’t know Sarah Palin, but I hope that she is strong enough to fight back the next time some speechwriter tries to dump a load of manure like this on her.
113. Jeff | 09.04.08
I think it was nice to see someone who is not from the Washington DC Beltway Bunch tell it like it is ( Especially The part about not being woried what the Media thought of her ) Could there really be someone who believes in Public Service not Self Service
114. impression | 09.04.08
Wow, I’m so impressed how Sarah read that speech from the teleprompter. She has really put her Jounalism degree to good use. And how she and Giuliani ganged up on Barack for being a community organizer. Well that just showed such character and class. I would definitely vote for an Idaho Educated Beauty Queen that’s just so pretty over a Harvard Educated community organizer that helps the poor any day. Give me a break. What a joke.
115. Janet | 09.04.08
McCain has given his entire life to his country. Obama has given his…well, um…part of his life…to politics/being political. McCain and Palin will lead on conviction and have a track record of doing so. Palin’s speech sealed the deal for the GOP this November.
116. Anita | 09.04.08
If anybody can lead us into more war and maybe even nuclear war it is Mccain/Palin ticket, but hey that is one way to get rid of the Polar Bear problem…
I go to church everyday, and say my prayers everynight for all of us.
I do wonder why education is so eschewed as “elite” by republicans though? It is as if it it almost a “bad” thing. I would have to disagree.
Both of my brothers were Marines in the Vietnam War and my dad was in the Air Force in WWII… They are all voting Obama/Biden, just incase that is a newsflash for you! The media seems to leave them out.
All the Best,
Anita

I myself was not impressed and shocked to see the media’s take on things the following day. I see the same ploys that the Bush admin. used, and can’t say that I’m a fan. No one is ever experienced enough … the same stuff everytime from both sides. I want to hear the issues. I’m tired of the personal attacks. I have to say that I’m honestly leaning toward Obama, if he handles the rest of the world the way he thoughtfully handles this election, he has my vote. Obama is one to turn down the personal attacks more so, and has even stated that McCain’s military record is “something to be respected.” But, what does his military record really have to do with being the president? Is that why we keep starting wars … so that in the future the canidates can say whether or not they served our country in Iraq?
118. dan | 09.04.08
I watched Governor Palin deliver her speech last night and lost a whole night’s sleep for my efforts. In a time when we desperately need to come together as a nation to tackle serious global issues, she chose the most disrespectful and divisive path available to her. With all that we are facing in our world, do we really want to put a self-proclaimed pit bull in the White House? I thought we were trying to fight against mixing religious extremism and politics. When she says that the war in Iraq is God’s work, she puts us all at risk. As an evangelical minister, I pray that the American people will see through this tactic and vote for change and unity.

sarah palin stood up to all you doomers. and did very well, as for me and millions of other american voters she does have more experence than big O and little joe put togather.
what sarah palin proved to me was YOU KICK MY DOG AND I’LL KICK YOUR CAT.
GOOD FOR YOU SARAH PALIN,YOU HAVE THEM ON THE ROPES. KEEP HITTING THEM WHERE IT HURTS. THE AMERICAN VOTERS.
120. mary | 09.04.08
ME: female professional, advanced degrees, glass-ceiling buster, moderate/centrist, older, Democrat from ‘71-’88, Republican from ‘88-last spring, switched parties to vote against Hillary/for Obama in the primaries (with the full intention of switching BACK to Republican, and strong likelihood of voting for McCain in the general election).
SARAH PALIN: for anyone who knows her from Alaska, possibly the only woman in America who is MORE jaded, MORE opportunistic, MORE savage than Hillary, while being at the same time A THOUSAND TIMES LESS qualified than Hillary to run anything but her mouth!
I feel now the same way I felt in ‘88 after the Dem’s staged Debacle Dukakis. The only way I could register my feelings then was to switch parties.
Then is now. I shall remain a registered Democrat for the foreseeable future. Any powerful male who imagines he can trot out this Attack Barbie and snag my vote–much less my respect–just doesn’t get it. Imagine this guy running the country! Imagine Sarah Barracuda waiting in the wings!
Barack–you just got my vote, gratis John McCain…and the narcissistic pitbullish wannabe-VP Sarah Palin. We’re talking judgment here. McCain’s lost it, Barack’s got the goods. He’s the only show in town–notwithstanding those who were so fatuously dazzled by Sarah’s big performance last night. In Alaska, they’re used to it–but they know to watch their backs for the knife that’s surely coming.
121. Maung Maung | 09.04.08
Palin did not impress me at all. She was going through the speech as she was coached. The speech did not have substance nor touch-on important issues. Some old tactics of fear-mongering and personal attacks. Also sickening to hear Rudy Guillani pandering to Israeli lobby. This is not country first.
122. Liam | 09.04.08
@ Bob Cronberg:
You went from blue to red in an hour? Really? Did Palin make some point that you’d not considered? Did you want to vote for McCain, but assumed that he would pick a VP that you didn’t like, and so you were going to vote Democrat? Are you extremely susceptible to good speeches? I’m sorry, but I find your claim frankly incredible. I think it’s much more likely that you went from red to *still* red.
I’m right, aren’t I?
123. Mike | 09.04.08
I was not going to vote for the Washington insider McCain, but now I am in hopes that Sara Palin will someday become president. She is exactly what this country needs. Someone who is one of us, working class Joes and Janes who are seeing their country run by the elite, ruling class, socialists on our dime. I agree with a previous comment comparing her to Harry Truman. We need citizen statesmen patriots, not career politicians!
124. Gayland | 09.04.08
I was impressed with Palin last night. Sounds to me like alot of the people
giving their input must have been Dem. and they will give a negative feedback
because they are negative about everything and everyone. Go Sarah!
125. O’please | 09.04.08
No change. She’s still a lightweight, no matter how much lipstick you put on this prig.
126. Linda | 09.04.08
Wow, I really wanted to like her but I found myself totally turned off by the end of her speech. A very condescending woman…
127. Liz | 09.04.08
Why did she disparage community organizers? Wasn’t Bush touting community service with his “thousand points of light” campaign?
I work for a non-profit that protects farmland and works with farmers and landowners on good land-use conservation….we help farmers get state grants, teach kids about local habitats and make donations to local rescue squads.
Do I sound like I have a useless, do-nothing job? What I do is important. Palin doesn’t seem able to build herself up without knocking someone else down….or a whole group of ’somebodies’ who work very hard.

If you think you know who Sarah Palin is, read that story. It’s the ONLY thing you can find online that’s written by someone who actually knows her. I think everyone should pass it around and read it, because there’s more information in there than in the last 100 stories I’ve read about her.
130. Julie | 09.04.08
She was a shocking, shrill, polarizing presence, full of self-indulgent sarcasm. As a woman, I find her an utterly offensive and ignorant zealot. Please, media, do your job now and hit her with the tough questions.
McCain is a vile, cynical, warmonger who has chosen one of ‘God’s footsoldiers’ to win. It disgusts me that we’ve been thrown full force back into the culture wars. She is not my America. She is not the future of America. And she sure as **** won’t get any thinking woman’s vote.
131. Way | 09.04.08
I’m not decided on who to vote for yet but here’s my impression on Palin’s speech:
Palin SPOKE well but the speech, which she didn’t write, was distastefully mean and all “smoke and mirrors”. It showed her as a hypocrite and unexperienced. She said Obama switches positions on issues. She obvioiusly forgot about her change of position regarding the “Bridge to Nowhere”. She wanted to keep her children out of it, primarily because of her unwed pregnant 17 yr old daughter. But then decides to use her son, who will be deployed to Iraq next week, as a selling point of her patriotism. Sarah Palin a soccer mom? I don’t think so. Republican doesn’t want to tax businesses and the wealthy because it will hurt their ability to provide jobs. Well, then why are the businesses who are receiving tax breaks outsourcing jobs to other countries. Where are the jobs they are supposed to create?
Although we all should be greatful for McCain’s service to our country, Republicans must remember that there are other ways to service and fight for our great country other than in war.
Overall…not impressed.
132. Louise Riley | 09.04.08
Actually, I’ve met nicer and more educated pitbulls! Sarah Palin has shown her true colors, just another right wing, republican culture warrior. I was not sure how to vote until her speech.
I was a Hillary supporter leaning to McCain. Now I konw that I WILL VOTE for Barack Obama. This is not the woman I want with her finger on the nuclear button if McCain passes away!
She is a disgrace to decent Americans everywhere.
133. Creamsykle | 09.04.08
Sara Palin thinks that the Iraq war is a mission from god… This war is not “Gods Will” its big oil and arms merchants will. No wonder she thinks this way, here is a quote from the pastor of her church. This is the same kind of talk that convinces Muslim children to become suicide bombers. Hey Sara! Jesus does not advocate war.
“What you see in a terrorist — that’s called the invisible enemy. There has always been an invisible enemy. What you see in Iraq, basically, is a manifestation of what’s going on in this unseen world called the spirit world. … We need to think like Jesus thinks. We are in a time and a season of war, and we need to think like that. We need to develop that instinct. We need to develop as believers the instinct that we are at war, and that war is contending for your faith. … Jesus called us to die. You’re worried about getting hurt? He’s called us to die. Listen, you know we can’t even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. … I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say “war mode.”"
134. Michael | 09.04.08
Palin’s disrepectful comments about Obama’s community organizing was a slap in the face to people who struggled for civil rights in this country, who struggled for women’s right to vote, who struggled for decent working wages. She had nothing to say other than mean-spirited, insulting soundbites.
135. Sheri | 09.04.08
Isn’t it interesting that the silent majority waits patiently for the opportune moment to voice their opinions. While the leftist group takes EVERY opportunity to sling dirt and express what only a SMALL majority of Americans think. I think Sarah Palin is BRILLIANT and she represents the silent majority who will make their voices heard on election day when it counts!

READ THIS ! ! ! NO MATTER WHAT YOUR POLITICAL VIEWS ARE YOU MUST READ THIS
This election is a choice between Socialism and Federalist Capitalism.
If you don’t know the difference then you should research and compare and contrast Karl Marx socilaist ideals (Obama) with Thomas Jeffereson’s Federist ideals (McCain)
Socialism Defined:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism
Federalism Defined:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federalism
Capitalism Defined:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitalism
I think when you actually read these definitions and compare the candidate’s stances on the issues, you will see that Obama’s views are from the socialst nature and are actually a step backwards towards socialism. You will see McCain’s views are actually progressive and strive more towards capitalism. That’s why the Europeans love OBAMA so much.
Leaders have preached to their followers about everyone getting taken care of by their government, and have created a vision of the perfect sociaety where everyone goes to college, gets their healthcare taken care of, and are promised retirement at a certain age. These leaders were talking about socialism. In theory the ideals appear as a uptopia of prosperity. In reality the government controls their lives and spends their money. Did you know that the level at which we call poverty in America is actually referred to as the middle class in Europe. Ever travel to Europe? It’s nasty! Dirty! Filthy! Do we want that for America?
That’s our decision! Federalist Capitalism or Socialism?
I think you know the RIGHT answer!
138. tdub | 09.04.08
How do I like her now? Less, actually.
I don’t think that belittling Obama’s years as a community organizer represents anything close to “compassionate Conservatism” She never really addressed the most important issue in the country–the economy. She seemed to be railing against big government while at the same time supporting the military, economic and taxation policies that created bigger government and national debt in the last 8 years. Paying lip service to “working class Joes and Janes” is meaningless when you are only too willing to keep lowering taxes for the rich and leaving nothing for the middle class and lower classes. Behind all the fire and impressive brimstone only revealed a more conservative version of McCain. So, she “did” pretty good, unil you look at the details of “what” she said.
139. MIKE | 09.04.08
The only one with grace and dignity was for me Mike Huckabee! Otherwise angry republicans on the GOP: so many dirty speeches in the same way as your role model Rush Limbaugh who wrote the true patriotic sentence about hurricane Gustav : “Jindal dashes Democrat dreams of destruction.” This is really the way republicans want to united our country! And this with republican slogan: Country first! as if the other side is not patriotic! I say just: Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged!
140. trentadad | 09.04.08
It’s a shame we need more love in our country..Now we have a woman from one of the coldest states and she has a cold heart. Glad she’s not my Mom, She has no respect for her own child . Just what power. There was no good meat in her speak. Can vote for a man who can’t think. His judgement is messed up . Plus I feel sorry for her and McCain both scrapegoats for a desperate GOP.
141. Voice of Reason | 09.04.08
Both John McCain and Sarah Palin represent the virtues and determination that built this country.
142. seano | 09.04.08
How now? Not much. She’s got moxie, alright (spelled in her case, mocks-y), but zingers and oozing saracasm seems to be all the star ‘qualities’ the ‘pubs can crow about. Hard to believe this campaign has now come to the point where the Democrats have re-claimed the right to ask “where’s the beef”? But they’re looking a lot more presidential this morning.
143. Dr. Lewis Keizer | 09.04.08
P.S. Is political cuddling up to advocates of Alaskan succession from the Union patriotic? Compare that to the only great Republican, Abraham Lincoln, who SAVED the Union!!! And what was that stuff McCain was saying about religious bigots like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell–Oh! That was THEN; this is NOW.
144. James | 09.04.08
The speech started well, and Palin started to look like an inspired choice. I’d like to see more women in power and as I watched I was more and more impressed.
It was smart to hammer the “not just Republicans, but all Americans” inclusiveness theme. But then she started attacking anyone and anybody who wasn’t a hard-core conservative Republican. The media, the Washington elites, Michelle Obama, and between the lines, anyone not from a small-town background or anyone who’s pursued an education. Light on issues is putting it mildly. What a blatent contradiction!
By the end I was really disgusted.
Can we get over her family, stop wasting time on her cute kids and cuddly husband and proud parents, stop her wasting time on simply belittling Obama, and get this woman to explain what she believes is needed, how she thinks she can meet the challenges, and what her and McCain’s vision is for this country?
I’m worried that she’s Bush all over again, just further to the right and even less worldly. The McCain team are riding on the “maverick” label, but in their Rovian tactic of simply undermining the opponent without ever laying out clearly their own agenda, instead focussing on presenting themselves as “friendly” and “funny” they’re becoming just another bundle of ineptitude, negativity and divisiveness.
145. john p | 09.04.08
These comments all follow the party lines. Dems thought the speech was awful, Reps thought it was awesome. We are no better than the bi partisan BS that goes on in Washington. We should all try to take the colored glasses off and be honest. Who wrote the rule that says “if the other party does or thinks something, it is completely wrong regardless of the facts”. What a crock. I wish I could be in a coma for the next 2 and 1/2 months.
146. Thomas | 09.04.08
Wow. Like everyone else, I was so impressed with Palin. Her speech is on par with anything Obama has delivered.
147. Tim | 09.04.08
I’m not going to say much about the speech except tat it may have engergized the conservative base, but that won;t make a majority come election, she really turned off everyone else.
What concerns me is the overtones of racism and bigotry among the conservatives. Especially Rudy Guillani. He pretty much said that he supports strict racial profiling and showed hatred towards Islam. I won’t get into why it’s important to be politically correct when your in a presidential campaign….I shouldn’t have to.

This comment or way of thinking baffles me…”I found Sarah Palin offensive and divisive. I found her sarcastic mocking sad. She did seem a “barracuda” and a “pit bull with lipstick”–both very fierce and deadly animals. I think this country needs thoughtful leaders who are consensus builders not attack animals.” She and the very idea of her has been atttacked for a week now. Why not come back with a little fierce talk? She may be a little bit of both pit bull and baracuda but still doesn’t compare the the SHARKS that have been attacking and speculating about her so far. Come on now, fair is fair.
149. Shelby | 09.04.08
She came across as mean, nasty and venomous and she was preaching to the choir in StP Paul.
I think she has a fine line to walk on,if she continues to come across sarcastic and full of venom as well as being combative, she is going to get an image of being a B…h,which will turn off alot of independant voters or those sitting on the fence.
150. BD | 09.04.08
Sarah hit it out of the ball park last night. This is one amazing woman.
In 2 months time it won’t even be close…landslide victory for the Republicans.
Here I thought the Democrats might have a chance this year but that is now out the window thanks to Sarah.

Will America once again be duped by Republican lies and false propaganda? Palin is selling the same old snake oil and we’ll get just as sick as we did undr GW.
Republicans have sold America out, literally. The Chinese own half our debt even as McCain/Bush rack up over a trillion dollars more one the Iraq debacle.
If you’re a millionare oil executiuve I can see you voting for McCain. But why would anyone else? It makes no sense. It’s just sheer ignorance to vote Republican.
Taxes? Obama will finally help out the middle class like Palins sister. Unlike under McCain/Bush where we continue to shoulder the burdon for the rich. And by rich I’m refering to McCains definition of $5 million or more. That’s none of us in THIS blog.
We got screwed the past 8 years under Republican domination. Let’s not make the same mistake again.
152. Cord | 09.04.08
I am tired of fear mongering. We have had SO much fear mongering for the past 8 years. I am ready for a leader who will not jump on the war bandwagon with such ease as the Republicans seem to do. 9-11 was horrible, we all know that. We all also know that Iraq was not the reason for 9-11. We know that McCain wants us to remain in Iraq. Why? Sarah Palin seems to be just as much of a war monger as Bush and McCain.

155. sairam | 09.04.08
Dear All,
A very good speech just does not qualify for a good Veeps and may b prez one day. I am not a sexist but want to ask, “does she really qualify to b e there where she is now”. A good orator and a good writeup speech does not qualify some one. In that case Katie couric..CNN anderson…all other good anchors will be well qualified. They also have responsibilities..they also have pressures of a job. I guess they entertain lot many people than what Palin can work for. So all it matters is, “Is she qualified or not?” and she si NOT.

Who is Palin to insult Obama’’s accomplishments and the intelligence of the voter. More than 18 million people voted for him. Millions of individual voters have contributed to his campaign. It would take a hundred years of every vote in Alaska for Palin to rack up that kind of record. Who is this lightweight Palin to cast stones at Obama?? We are just learning like McCain who she really is. She is a creationist, anti-environment, denier of global warming, extremist evangelical who fired a city librarian for resisting censorship. She is a double-talker who fought for huge earmarks for her tiny town. She appointed a man convicted of sexual harassment to be in charge of Public Security. She is a hypocrite who attacked Hillary as a whiner and now wants to ride Clinton’’s coat tails. She has no real education and these attempts to give a strident abuser of political power (Troopergate) credibility through The Big Lie will backfire and sink McCain. His judgment is on the line and he failed the test. If by some horrible turn of luck Palin/McCain win, then even God will not be able to save this country.

A question to those who like the Palin choice… all spin aside.
Do you feel comfortable, that Palin understands the complex domestic & foreign policy issues, that face our Country?
If so, what has she said, that shows you she understands any issues?
I understand you’re a Republican, and you want to believe, but we’re talking about the Pres of the US. McCain is 72, and is a cancer survivor.
Thus, his VP choice is more important than most.
You disagree with Obama… cool.
But, it confounds me that anyone could judge Gov Palin, without her ever answering a question. I’ve seen Glenn Close, play the role of President.
She can give a great speech, but does that mean I’d want her as President?
And please, if you choose to respond to my question, answer it… it has nothing to do with Obama, Communism, Dems, nor any other spin you’ve heard.
This is about Gov Palin - - what has she said, that leads you to believe she knows about issues facing America, both domestically, and internationally?
Or, that she’s ever even considered them?
162. kemo | 09.04.08

For all of you who did not approve of last nights speech……..oh well.
These conventions are pep rallies. If you think the DNC did such a great job of being “positive”, go back and read the speeches, they are framed identically to the ones we’ve heard this week at the RNC. Some people deliver a speech better, and are more convincing. Read a speech without the delivery and what do you have? The New York Times Editorial Page. There are no right answers to the issues facing our generation, only interpretations of the right answers. The breakdown in our society is not politics, that has remained divisive throughout history. Read a little about the Roman Empire and you’ll see what I mean. The problem is media, in all forms, news, movies, blogs, print. NO ONE IS IMPARTIAL. EVERYONE HAS AN AGENDA. Your disagreement all depends on who you follow. BTW, we all follow something. So following is your choice, who do you follow? Step outside the media and think on that for a moment, if you can.

Hopefully she has had her say to let the mean, nasty and venomous media know she wasn’t about to back down even with their B…hy opinions about her. I agree that she should stop with that now and concentrate on the issues of our country, BUT, I don’t blame her a bit for letting the world know she not going to just duck their punches.

The Swing Voters are the deciding factor in this election, just as they were in 2000 and 2004. Approximately 10% of the American electorate. Changing their minds is what this is all about. All the rest are either Red or Blue. Palin consolidated the Conservatives in the Republican Party and changed more than a few minds last night, and we are not talking about the Blog Hacks above, Blue from Birth, who stated they now harken to the Messiah, Obama. I doubt that there is a Soccer Mom in America that isn’t discussing, positively, the Governor from Americas Frontier.

To the writer who decided Palin would be a protector: I wish you would reconsider your decision. Palin has not necessarily proven to be a protector of what is right. She apparently fired the town librarian who opposed Palin’s interest in banning books and fired the other official who wouldn’t fire her sister’s ex. I agree that she can be viciously protective but Cheney has certainly been the same and I don’t think our country has benefited. We need people who will protect us well, not pit bulls who bite at everything that walks by. Protecting us well would have been securing Afghanistan from the Taliban, not sinking our fortunes into a country based on a lie to outdo Dad and theoretically get more oil (didn’t happen).
One comment about Obama’s community organizing. I can assure you that any African American who was a Harvard Law Review editor could have waltzed into a half a million a year job on Wall Street his first year out of school (and thereafter argued the necessity of further tax cuts for the rich.) I think the fact that he chose instead to help working class people says a whole lot about his principles and character.
169. Eric | 09.04.08
I don’t understand how the pundits or anyone can consider that a good speech. Why did she spend so much time talking about her family when they’re supposed to be off limits? She blasted community and grassroots organizations, unions, and impoverished people in Chicago immediately after bringing up her husband’s association with a union. She blatantly lied about Obama’s legislative record (he actually did author some important legislation - go to http://www.factcheck.org) and her position on pork spending (she hired a lobbyist for Wasilla when she was mayor there, and Alaska gets more earmarks per capita than any other state). And her position on energy is to remain dependent on oil?
Oh, and apparently, McCain was a POW. Did you know that?
She did deliver her speech well. I’ll give her that. But the content was so ridiculous and hypocritical… well I was quite entertained. She is charismatic and charming though, so I guess the tickets are pretty even now. Each have an old white guy and a charismatic unknown. I just hope the charismatic constitutional law professor gets the job over the hockey mom.

I realy have to question the family values of Palin. In her speech she said her husban was a product manager on the slopes. These people are housed on the slopes and live there for wweks at a time. This is 4 to 6 weeks away from the family. Now she is taking on this roll as VP which will take her away from the family as well. Where is the quality family time she is so proud of? Is her daugters prignacy spot light goin to cause a high increase in teen prignancies? WHERE IS THIS WOMANS HEAD?
171. Olna Reeves | 09.04.08
Although Palin has a wonderful delivery, a skill honed from her time as a sports caster, underneath the facade of “just like you,” we have a woman married to a blue collar husband, with no college background, who has for years belonged to an organization that would like Alaska to secede from the United States, always putting Alaska first.
Palin herself is a devoted Pentecostal Christian (Assemblies of God), a group which wouldn’t mind hastening Armageddon, through the use of nuclear means, to bring on the Rapture, and the Second Coming. Of course, they do not mention this specifically. But the comparison to Truman, gives me chills in that area, regarding nukes. Truman wasn’t longing for end times, in the same way some Assemblies of God members are.
Given that as a tenant of her church, Assemblies of God, is that one of the spiritual gifts is “word-of-knowledge,” I do not think it would be too personal for a journalist to ask Governor Palin, if she has received an anointing in the Holy Spirit, with a special message for the future of the United States and her role in it. Her minister has apparently already received one.
The team that is now “handling” Palin, writing her speech, telling her how to respond to any questions, is also erasing the specifics of her Assemblies of God background. Could it be that nearly all Evangelical Christians know perfectly well what Assemblies of God teaches, and while some would be more enthusiastic about having her be one, many would not, especially those from more mainstream Protestant sects.
Lastly, the Republican theme to denigrate Obama, and the thousands of people who are involved in community service, was reprehensible. Around the world, people doing community service, are merely filling in the gaps, where politics, with its egos, payoffs, and big business, has failed.
That Obama spent his early career in community organizing is an incredible testament to his character. Where did Palin spend her early career? In beauty pageants and sports casting.

Congratulations! A well delivered speech brimming with sarcasm and venom.
Unfortunately, derisive and divisive rhetoric is what we’ve had for 8 full years. This is just more of the same.
Get to the facts.
Palin is a right-wing extremist; a religious ideologue who believes the world is only 5000 years old and that we should teach that to our kids; a zealot who would ban books from libraries she doesn’t agree with; an anti-choice extremist who would ban abortion even in cases of rape and incest; a denier of global-warming and friend of big oil; a crony who uses her power to settle family scores; a flip-flopper who strongly supported the bridge-to-nowhere until switching sides when it was set to fail and now lies about her record on the stump.
Sure, the republican / evangelical base love her. She’s just like them.
175. Mike | 09.04.08
This is politics. I wonder why people are surprised when opponents of Obama highlights his inability to lead or express their view point. It is considered to be negative and on other hand when Obama sites some inexperience issue with John McCain/Mrs. Sarah Palin and makes any negative comments about McCain it is received as viewpoint on issues. Welcome to Politics, if you have not debated anytime in your lifetime, yes you will find all these things strange but in professional world this is very normal.
I found it very very strange that in the world of Politics, people want to hear everything good about one candidate and out rightly ignore the other candidate. This is not Democracy and I see media playing major role in building public opinion against one candidate. I am not a Democrat or a Republican.
Sometimes i feel that public makes up an opinion based on media ratings, opinions and have no time to analyze by themselves. The election is the most important thing of anybody’s life and public should switch off these Newschannel to get their view and not view impacted by these so called experts in politics.
176. Charles Glisson | 09.04.08
I for one did find ANY admirable qualities to Sara Peiln’s speech. Oh it had substance all right, ONE LIE AFTER ANOTHER! She also seemed to have more than a professional admiration for Grandpa McCain, better keep a close eye on things Todd, you’ve been down that road before!
When Sara was bragging about her accomplishments she left out some things. Like when shew tried to fire the librarian because she wouldn’t take certian books off the shelf that SARSA DECIDED we shouldn’t be reading! or the fact that the town she was Mayor in became the METH capitol of Alaska, and that she managed to bankrupt the town(Hey she manages budgets as well as George Bush!). She also had the director of public saftey fired when he refused to fire Sara’s brother in law over a contested divorce settlement with her sister! Oh yea, what about Ted Stevens’s “Bridge to nowhere”? Yup, she had her greedy little piglet hands all over that scandal too! We ALL know the bridge NEVER got built, but guess what? Sara KEPT THE MONEY,,,OUR MONEY, THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER. Thats right America Sara and Ted NEVER got the bridge built, but they RIPED US OFF for it!
The ONLY thing The Republican party did was bring to the attention of the American public, a corrupt, greedy and dangerously ambitious power drunk scoundrel. Thanks for the “head’s up”, WE will be watching you VERY closely Sara, thats meens AFTER November 4th, when you get to return to Alaska to unleash even more “accomplishments” that state, and attempt to empty the pockets of the American taxpayers in the “lower 48″ in the process!
177. Katharine | 09.04.08
There is nothing to say about Sarah Palin’s speech until she actually gives one she conceived of and wrote. This one, written by Campaign hacks and then ‘feminised’ (love to have seen the previous version)when they learned she was the pick, was simply delivered by her. And she had almost a week to do nothing but get it down. Tells me nothing.
178. John | 09.04.08
The wildfire has started. Anybody want to bet the polls show a huge jump for the republican ticket? The Democrats will regret not having Clinton on the ticket. Democrats now have to wait another 4 years. What a shame. Osama Obama
will end up just like Gore. Glad to see her take a swipe at the liberal media too. What a bunch of scum bags the media has become. Good thing most in America can see through it.
179. D.Patrick Wright | 09.04.08
There are far more negative posts regarding Governor Palin here than positive ones. But that’s not an accurate reflectIon of the polls. The USA appears to be split right down the middle, and the rift is ever-increasing. I seldom recall people being so vehment about the cultural devide. I also see the effect of the blame game going on as a result so medial sway. Flip the channels including news networks and within five minutes you can accurately rate the extent of liberalism promoted by each. All of them, including fox are left of center.
I see both sides. I also see error on both sides. But I am absolutely amazed at how quickly people will jump on the bandwagon–ANY bandwagon–without having even a modicum of fact. Most of the posts are citing eroneous news reports, self-serving weblogs, homemade speculation and fabricaton as FACTS. Becaue it is written or said or thought, does not make it factual.
Most of us have already made up our minds about how we will vote, and are looking for reasons to justify our stances, thus the deeply divided views.
I too fall victim of “The Media”. But at least in this instance I can see what a huge injustice has and is being done by this blatant hatchet job–because I happen to know firsthand, what is accurate. God help us all…
And lest we forget, sometimes some of us are called upon to serve our country over ourselves (and our families). That any of us feel inclined to think that this also may be the case for Governor Palin, is a testemeant as to how we can come to take our liberties for granted. Two diametrically opposed sides are each convinced that they are “right.” Very scary. Both sides CAN’t be right.

More Rosanne Barr than Ronald Reagan.
While she exonerated McCain for his hasty choice, and energized the party faithful, very few others seem to be impressed.
It was a low bar. She passed. But given McCain’s age, Palin is a difficult pill for most Americans to swallow.
181. A. Marron | 09.04.08
Let me remind all voters that this is America and one of the only few places where Cinderella stories come true. Sara is about to realize her dream come true. Last night she demonstrated she has the telent, finesse, and preven leadership skills and clearly sent this message to the American people. She acted and spoke on the level of a CEO from any major company and gave a solid nominee business plan overview. This was only her first round at it too.
If Obama could ever make up his mind, he might become a strong leader someday but right now he is too busy trying to reunite the Democratic party. Since he couldn’t decide to pick Hillary after a slam-dunk party recommendation he lost ground rounding up her eighteen million votes. Sara on the other hand is ready NOW, shows spirit and decisiveness and clear ambition she make the tough decisions and lead this great nation.
America, it’s now up to you to decide if you want someone to take this country forward > by an individual who recently divided their party out of personal pride, irrational thinking, indecisiveness; in lieu of a seasoned Republican team with proven executive AND LEADERSHIP experience with a priority agenda to fix national energy, defense, and economic problems that will benefit all Americans and the world. Vote McCain / Palin for me!
182. Carlin | 09.04.08
I was revolted by Sara Palin’s speach. I saw nothing but a strident, mean spirited woman issuing pre-approved spin and lies. She claims to be this huge reformer yet worked closely with Ted Stevens on the brige to nowhere. She has no, zip, zero experience with national security issues, national economic issues (asside from grabbing as many earmarks for her town as she could) or forign relations issues. She actually cites the Alaskan pipeline as an example of her vast experience! First of all, the pipeline has not even been started yet, not one brick laid. Second, the pipeline is another huge handout to big oil and gas companies that the American people will foot the bill for and not get anything in return (like those promises that Iraq will provide cheap oil to the United States).
Sara Palin is nothing but a cynical choice who appeals to no one but extremists and idiots.
183. Max | 09.04.08
As a Hillary Clinton supporter, I found Gov. Palin a very appealing VP nominee for the Republicans. I even found her a much better orator than the flip-flopping Obama. Now I know whom to vote for in Novemebr. The McCain/Palin ticket looks much more credible, confident, and experienced than the elusive Barack Hussein Obama and his hateful groupies.
184. Mimi | 09.04.08
To Sean: Barack Obama became a community organizer and found that particular church to help him build a resume for Law School. Becoming a politician was his main goal, not serving the poor on the South Side of Chicago. As a Chicagoan, I know how the political machine works. Obama did his research well before comming to Chicago, and mingled with people who helped him along the way. Now, he doesn’t want to talk about them. Remember Wright, Ayers, and Rezko? His arrogance and opportunistic advances are obvious, but many people seem not to notice. They love his speches but, motivational speakers are capable of producing as good speeches as Obama’s. Haven’t you ever heard a motivational speaker? I’m a Hillary Clinton supporter from Chicago who will stay home on election day, as will my husband and my daughter.
185. Tim | 09.04.08
She did well on the speech but can she and the Republicans afford to mock and alienate the urban areas and big cities in this country? I mean really; mocking community work — this offended me as an active person in my community. I was all for her but now I see a novice who may not understand the people who live in urban areas. Sad.
186. Ken | 09.04.08
Sarah tells it like it really is and some just don’t get it. Sarah gets criticized for not going into the details, well excuse me but neither did Obama. I would trust Sarah with my life and the future of the USA. Michelle Obama is a radical if there ever was one that really only cares about her husbands success and Barack is a wet behind the ears Lawyer with very little experience, just what we need to straighten things out more of the Clinton type facade. Bill Clinton just happen along at the right time in the economic cycle and had no respect for the USA or the position he held. Hillary is just a bitter liar that couldn’t fix the health care system or even control her husband when she was first lady. The Media has already elected Obama, but I guess he would be the easiest to manipulate.
187. Frank US | 09.04.08
McCain’s choice of Palin proves him incompetent and reckless. McCain had only met with Palin one time before he chose her to be his running mate. His staff had not vetted her. And yet he chose her to be a 72-76 year old heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States of America. McCain’s poor judgement mirrors that of Bush’s. Palin (and all republicans), continue to give big oil ownership of America, your wallet, and eventually your mortgage. Not to mention the fact that conservative republicans despise the Constitution of the United States, (not that Americans really care about small details like that - their main concern is being able to afford gas right now.)
188. Bobierto | 09.04.08
Pitbull in lipstick, indeed. The contrasts between the two conventions has been striking. The Democrats addressed the nation, trying to build a case why their leadership is best for all Americans. The Republicans are throwing red meat to the faithful. Sarah Palin read her script brilliantly (I must say Rudy Giuliani seemed a little demented by comparison). But it seems to me that historically the Republicans have always been the more sarcastic, more dismissive, more divisive party, and I saw nothing new here. If I were an enthusiastic Republican, I suppose I would have loved the speech for feeding me everything I already believed. As a Democrat who supported Hillary, and has some misgivings about Barack, this speech only reaffirmed for me that we MUST vote Democrat this year, and turn the country in a different direction. With McCain/Palin you’ll get the same song played in a different key.
189. Kary | 09.04.08
That speach rocked. I was a hardcore Hillary supporter, because any intelligent person, who’s read even 2 pages of his own books knows Obama is the 100% most dangerous person to EVER put into office, but Palin nailed it. She put Obama in his place. She showed you can’t knock her, and I am very proud. I think I am going to change my party. I am so so ashamed to be a Democrat anymore. The only thing I have against Palin is her wanting to drill in Alaska. Other than that I think she is more ready than Superstar Obama to run the country!!
190. Cheryl | 09.04.08
Well it is time to tell it honestly….First, Christians do not believe Country is first…God is, followed by family. Christians believe that we are to be in this world but not part of it and our mission is to love God with all our hearts, minds, and spirits and to love others as ourselves. I didn’t hear much love from Sarah last night for others…..I didn’t hear much love from George Bush for other either…..I guess I just wish people wouldn’t identify as Christian’s when they are not committed to doing God’s will and giving Him the glory….I’m not sure politics is the place for us….and please remember Dobson is a psychologist not a Christian pastor…

I really wanted to hear this woman’s own take on the serious issues facing us. I was not a fan of McCain’s pick of her for VP—but hoped she’d redeem hope in the idea of having her so close to the Presidency. What a disappointment!
She came off like a snobby little cheerleader bashing the smart kids. The whole crowd sounded mean. I saw nothing to give me any hope that there’d be a new approach from the Republicans should the same ignorant voters put them in the White House yet again.

I do not understand why the majority of comments seem to attack the fact that there was a speech writer. As if this is a new concept?
1. Speech writers DO NOT have full autonomy! The candidate has the autonomy to decide what she/he decides to convey in her speech.
2. EVERY public persona has a speech writer! Yes — it’s true — there are speech writers on every staff. Not only are there speech writers but there are also press secretaries and publicists! HELLO!
I find it interesting that those who love the political fight between polarized parties call political rhetoric “divisive,” as if a debate and disagreement isn’t divisive in its very nature! The entire point of an election is to identify the differences between each candidate. It’s called parliamentary debate and the basis of our democracy was built upon divisive rhetoric to effect change. PUHLEASE! The divisiveness is healthy and its telling of our democratic practices! Thank God for our liberties that those codemn! Get over it!

After hearing Sarah Palin’s speech at the convention I am totally convinced that she will become the VP of the U.S. for the simple reason that she is a perfect puppet that does exactly what she is told to do. All she did was bash her opponents and almost everything that came out of her mouth was negative. I was on the neutral side of these elections but Sarah Palin made me realize that if she and old man McCain win we are in a world of hurting for four more years and nothing in Washington will change. I can’t believe these ******* get away with lying to the American people. The republicans have completely messed up our economy and this will not change if they win again. Forget all the lies from both sides on what they are going to do for the working class I just want change in America. One last thing to keep in mind “The Maverick” is running on fumes which leads to my final question, can Sarah run the show if McCain kicks the bucket? Being president is a stressful job that will kill “The Maverick” before he completes his term.

Poor Obama. somebody finally questioned his experience, and picked on him. Well he has time to answer the charges. Biden says Obama worked across the aisle and had a lot of good Senators (democrts?) that would vouch for him. I was waiting for him to say how many bills Obama hd signed that’s what he was questioned on. How many did he get passed or iniate? How many days did he show up for work in the worst congress in American History. We should put Bush back in congress after his term is up. He has an approval rating of 29%, that’s about 3 times the rating of the congress (9%). I don’t think Religion is anything to worry about unless there’s someone preaching “God Damn America” like the churchs that some people have attended. I think Obama is a talented inteligent candidate, but don’t try to say he is more experience then Sarah Palin. She put together the 40 billion dollar pipe line deal to bring more gas and oil here to the lower states. Governors I have admired besides Palin? Bill Clinton, and Ronald Reagan are a couple.

The wizards behind the curtain continue to have their way with the American Earthlings. “Divide and conquer” is their game plan and the above comments a testimony to its effectiveness. We are a vanquished nation of individuals, each one annually robbed of 50% of his work output (money) to support those few who really control this planet.
Democrat vs. Republican, black vs. white, male vs. female, gay vs. straight, north vs. south, management vs. labor, belief in a higher power vs. not., east coast vs. west coast…….their strategy is clearly working.
The illusion has blinded all Earthlings to the reality so difficult to keep in focus. The world is controlled by a handful of international financiers and their mercenaries. Can you say “Illuminati”. Are we too “dumbed down” to seek the real truth?
America has been hijacked. The current candidates have all been bought and paid for by a “shadow government” that has been having it’s way with America since the early 1900’s.
My fellow Earthlings, please stop foaming at the mouth long enough to look in the mirror and recognize your real enemy, the sound asleep “unaware being” looking back at you.
WAKE UP! For a strong dose of reality check out

There’s not a dime’s worth of difference in the candidates. WAKE UP!
I’m a lousy Republican and a terrible Democrat. Let’s all become a Patriotic Earthlings and fight the only real battle.
It’s up to each of us to become the change we desire!

Two comments here:
1) I don’t want someone “just like me” to be running this country. I want someone smarter than me and with better judgement than me. Put someone “just like me” in charge of the country and it’s all over, folks.
2) For a while, I was an officer in the PTA at my child’s school. Given what I saw there, I *definitely* don’t want any of my fellow officers running the country, either.

Ok, we all get that John McCain was a POW. We all understand that Sarah Palin said no thanks to the bridge to nowhere (did I miss her reference to taking the money anyway), that she was a terrific mayor (who had to hire a city manager after she faced a potential recall, and took over a city with zero debit and left it $22,000,000 in debt). Ok she’s a reformer (she replaced all the people who disagreed with her and didn’t do her bidding), thinks Obama is out to raise taxes (did I miss her reference to her increasing the taxes on oil companies), she returned $1,200 to all Alaskans (at a time when she was borrowing to finance building projects). Yeah, i suppose I am a sexist because I question her ability to lead the nation in the event that something happens to McCain (Yeah, so what if he is in his 70’s and both his father and grandfather died in their early 70’s).
Last night was her chance to tell us who she was, and she spent most her time with sarcastic comments about the other side. I guess when you don’t have much to tell us about that will hold up to fact checking, you have to talk about something. Sarah Palin scares me. That she was the best choice for John McCain, scares me about his judgement.

I was so excited to finally see Sarah speak. I invited all my girlfriends over to watch her last night. We were buzzing with pride and excitement but by the time her speech was over we were so let down and depressed. Maybe our expectations were too high, maybe we wanted to believe but in the end she proved to be just another negative, condescending politician. Looks like my group of gals are going to rally behind Michelle Obama’s man!
201. sherrard | 09.04.08
Palin’s speech rallied those in the hall around a very simplistic and dangerous worldview. All positions contrary to Ms. Palin’s were portrayed as Un-American, sacrilegious and something to fear. The stirring up of fear and the bullying of US citizens into unquestioning submission is just the sort of thing we have seen in the Bush-Cheney years.
In a democracy we have the privilege and responsibility to question and make our own decisions. We should question our fear which has been used to grow government without offering services, engage in 2 wars, threaten another only to build the forces of 911, to make those near the President wealthy, to leave us unprepared for natural emergencies, indebt us to China ( a Nation that does not share our democratic values, values the debt leaves us defenseless to defend), to surrender our civil rights, and to leave our poor poorer and without health care, education or housing. She belittled the values of community, and campaigned for brute force more appropriate to a dictatorship than a democratic society.
202. Jhonny | 09.04.08
Palin never said anything bad about community organizers other then they have no true executive responsibility. She was responding to attacks from the left saying she had no experience. Don’t open that jar if you do not want to eat the results. OBAMA started it- comparing his running of his campaign to her small town experience. Yes- that’s right- OBAMA started it. Mayor of a city > Community Organizer. Being a volunteer is not a bad thing- it just does not prep you for the responsibilities of being the President of the United States.
Her sister’s ex that was fired- the left keeps going on and on about that. check your facts. Really. Spend 3 minutes checking facts. He has been caught drinking in his squad car. He used a taser gun on his 10 year old stepson. He threatened Palin and her family. This is not a good guy.
40- in his past, Obama was smoking pot and using cocaine. Who cares? And she should be home taking care of her kids? What is this 1950? How un-politically correct of you! What will your fellow Democrats say? What about Obama? He has two young children too! Oh- but he is a male so its ok for him to work right?
162- Of course she did not write the majority of her speech. Obama does not write his either. Neither do McCain, Biden or Bush- that’s what speech writers are for! So all she can do is read from a teleprompter…isn’t that one of the things the left hold dear about Obama?
And to all of you saying all she did was lambaste Obama…did you watch Biden last week? All he did was complain about Bush and McCain.
203. Bricker | 09.04.08
I’ve been spending (far too much) time today reading various articles on Palin’s speech, and have also took time to read many of the comments. I’m struck by how similar the anti-Palin comments sound. “Hateful and negative”, “didn’t write her own speech”, “I didn’t hear anything about macro-economics”, blah blah. I doesn’t seem reasonable to suppose that Axelrod sent thousands of drones to do his bidding, but it is reasonable to assume that thousands of drones check various sites like Daily Kos to find “clever” things to post at news sites like this, no doubt deluded into believing they actually make sense.
Let’s take them in order: After enduring 5 days of an abject hate-fest that even Susan Estrich thought was over the top, I’d say Palin was entitled to hit back a little. And isn’t that what VP candidates are for? Wasn’t there excitement on the Dem side over Biden filling the role of attack dog? And were any of you aghast at Obama’s freguent attacks on McCain in his speech? Palin’s zingers were funny. And they were funny because they were true. Libs detest being laughed at, that much is certainly true.
Of course she didn’t right her own speech. Contrary to apparent lib perceptions, neither does Obama. And she didn’t have to steal someone else’s speech.
Her job was not to lay out the GOP platform, it was to reassure the base that McCain hadn’t screwed up by picking her and introduce her to undecideds. McCain will go over the platform tonight. The partisan work’s already been done, and he’s not much of a speaker, so he might as well.
What I see is a bunch of Dems running scared. As well you should.

I love it!
We have millions of furious, terrified, angry liberals! Why? Because a decent Christian conservative, Sarah Palin, may bring some real change to Washington!
Sarah is a brilliant choice for the VP spot.
I find it interesting as well that the libs compare her to obama…as if the race is between the two.
Seriously people, really study the facts, and pray on this…our Country is at stake, it’s not just a power play between political parties…It is a choice we have to live with. A choice that will impact you and your children forever.
The choice has become an issue of color and gender…with many people ignoring the facts, and refusing to read and study the issues…
In some ways it really is that simple, one party wants a free and wealthy America…the other party wants a Communist America (redistribution of wealth is communism!)
What do you want?
See you at the polls.

The speech last night was the definition of preaching to the choir. The real test will be how she can think on her feet in the Vice Presidential debates.

Sarah Palin’s reporting of logistics information on military personnel is dangerous, if not illegal, and in very poor judgement.

Why is is when the Democrats question Governor Palin’s experience it is called making a good point, but when she questions Senator Obama’s experience, it is called being devisive? Mrs. Palin has more experience actually GOVERNING than Mr. Obama does, when he’s running for PRESIDENT, while she is running for VICE president!!! And if I hear one more word about Mrs. Palin not being a good mother because she is in politics, or that her young children will distract her from a position as VICE president, I’m going to scream!!!! One of the most famous pictures of President Kennedy depicts him at his desk, diligently working away at his paperwork while John Jr. is peeking out under the desk! Why is it distracting for Mrs. Palin to have small children as VP, when John Kennedy was, obviously, not distracted with his son playing between his legs!! What a DOUBLE STANDARD!!!!

Hockey mom Sara: Did a power play last evening; and the “skull and bones”
fraternity of elites don’t like it. Deal with it! The Harper Valley PTA performance has now swung full circle - gut shooting Donkeys.
Senator Lieberman now has officially alienated the Democrats. As, has Representative Ron Paul broke ranks with the Republicans. Change (finally) is beginning to surface from the status quo. Bricker,
I’m nobody’s drone, thank you (I don’t even know what Daily Kos is), and I’m sure many, if not most, of the others, expressing their heartfelt fears and opinions here, are not either. Are you saying, much as the extremists would, that anyone who doesn’t heap praise on this woman is doing so for ulterior motives? That they just hate this country so much that they will do or say anything they can to make sure their candidate gets an infinitesimal boost?
Of course no self-respecting McCain supporter would stoop so low. You’d only see that kind of behavior from “liberals” “socialists” and “terrorists”. Please.

Wow…Saracuda did to Obama what Jessie Jackson whispered about doing to him…cut his * off, only she did it up front, loud and clear, with a smile. Hillary Clinton would be President if she would have gone after Bambi’s lack of experience the way Saracuda did. Community Organizer? What exactly did he organize, and how did it work out exactly? As far as I’m concerned, the south side of Chicago is still the pits. Joe Biden is the future?…entrenched for 36 years. We can only hope Saracuda is a heartbeat away from the Presidency! PS…for all you Dems, she’s a woman, not sure if you recognize a woman outside a neon orange pantsuit! LOL.

I’m amazed that people think that this negative, divisive, derisive speech with no plan to tackle the huge problems facing us was great. By the middle of it, I was so put off, I just turned off the TV. What the heck has happened to John McCain? He expects to win over us undecided with this rubbish?
214. Trish | 09.04.08
I love everything about her! I was worry that those donkeys was going to win but after last night I can go on with my life n not worry about who is going to be our next Pres. n Vice Pres. because its going to be the right party more or less the right people.
I am a young woman n there is no way i will vote for a man that have nothing to show for! All he can do that i see is give good speech. As for his wife I suggest she go n live in some other country which she can be proud of.
215. Alexander | 09.04.08
I absolutely loved her speech! I found it extremely heartening, and was immediately impressed with her stiff-spined and fearless barrage on the Democrats. I’m glad that the GOP finally has someone on board who can bring the three branches of our party together and who so effortlessly enrages the Democrats. I also saw the unrestrained hope and excitement of so many women in the audience last night, who had *no* idea they would be watching a woman of such promise on the stage during this convention. All in all it was a tremendous, collective sigh of relief and exhileration. I feel like McCain has given the whole country an incredible gift in Sarah Palin, and that the Democrats had better learn not to stick their hands into the blender with this woman, for their own good. I was on the fence about supporting McCain, but that’s over now.
216. rnc sheep | 09.04.08
Did anyone notice how long of an applause Sarah Palin got? It went on for like 10 minutes. I was laughing the whole time. Here we have all these brainless idiots applauding someone for 10 minutes they just found out about like 3 days ago that they have know idea about. And the other funny thing I noticed is that Palin didn’t have the leadership ability to take a hold of the mic and tell everyone when she was ready to speak. If the audience didn’t quiet down for like 1 minute or so of dead silence the audience would have just kept going. **** it would’ve went on for a half hour. LOL. If McCain would’ve picked joe smo down the street, these people would’ve have followed them to the end of the earth. What a bunch of sheep, absolute insanity. You know what I’m reminded of when I see Sarah Palin, you ever watch Professional Wrestling, where like the wrestler has his female wrestler up their talking tough. I’m gonna put the pain on you. She’s a hockey lover right? Not too far from pro wrestling if you ask me. I’ll bet if they did a poll of the Republican party probably over 50% of them watch pro wrestling on a regular basis. Total morons.
217. KC | 09.04.08
Well, we all know now that she can read. But she was strident, and she didn’t speak to me at all. Her dysfunctional family issues aside, all we know about her is that she can deliver a well-timed zinger. I don’t even have the sense that she knew what she was talking about. Just that she could read. And the fact that the crowd loved her is irrelevant. It’s her party. She was preaching to her choir. As a woman, as a mother, as a professional, as a voter, I was not impressed. She was just way too unnecessarily mean, and she enjoyed it. She was calling them on their policies; she was being personally vicious and loving it. I have no trouble picturing her with a hunting knife kill animals.
Aside from McCain’s advanced age and overall unpredictable and impulsive temperament, she is now a reason I will not vote for them.
I also think that, as we know more and more about PTSD and its impact on people throughout their lives, it might be time to tone down all the POW rhetoric. He’s never seemed “stable” and it just calls attention to why.

I live in Alaska and have for three decades. Not everyone in Alaska is pleased with Sarah and her politics.
Sara Palin is not being honest with the American people. She did, in fact, support the famous “Bridge to Nowhere”, before it was politically expedient not to. She did not cut the budget when she was mayor of Wasilla. In fact, Wasilla received a record number of national earmarks during her administration. (which is paid for by all US tax payers) As far as troopergate goes, her emails will be very telling, and they will be released soon. Sara was instrumental in disbursing the $1200 energy rebate to all Alaska residents, but many of us would rather have the government spend this on alternate energy funding and research. Sara did not have anything to do with the Permanent Fund Dividend each Alaskan receives annually. She was instrumental in pushing through AGIA, but the State is giving private energy companies 500 million dollars to jump start the process. I don’t think energy companies need funding from the government, do you? Sara is against a woman’s right to choose (even in cases of rape or incest), she is for book banning in libraries and against sex education in public schools. Do you really want this person representing the United States?
As far as her comment on whether or not being a community organizer is good experience…. I guess it depends on whether you want to govern from the top down, or the bottom up. If you want to involve all, then that skill would be extremely useful.
222. Kay | 09.04.08
Sarah is benefitting from Affirmative Action. If she were a man, and no one who the heck she was, presenting her very same record of managing a town of 6700 and a state with the population of 1/5 of Chicago, she would have had to do much more than she did last night. Sarah Palin read a good speech! She did well, for a pretty girl, who is terribly unprepared to be the leader of the free world. Barack Obama’s campaign alone is one of the largest “corporations” in America, managing about $25-$30 million each MONTH. I’m going with the guy with a Law Degree from Harvard and who also taught CONSTITUTIONAL LAW! Come on, being smart is not a bad thing.

Looks like the vote is decided. Since I [and another 90% of the country] have been targeted with this unmitigated hate, what are the options? Not voting FOR being put in front of a firing squad. How does the song go?
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
Will McCain distance himself from the hate, or wallow in it?
224. Michael | 09.04.08
This just in:
“McCain vows to end partisan rancor in Washington”
Yeah it sure seemed like there was no “partisan rancor” last night!
225. Betty | 09.04.08
Interesting? No mention of the investigations into abuse of Governor’s powers back in Alaska! Or, her husband’s membership (or her own involvement) in the AIP secessionist organization. Only attacks on Sen. Obama and belittling being a community organizer.
Thoroughly vetted? No.
226. Spruce | 09.04.08
I was kind of buying into the talk of national unity…that changed quickly after I listened to the GOP speakers last night. Like one of the commentators, it actually hit me full force today. I only hope that the media does not back down from their jobs of giving the American people the truth. How many intentionally misleading statements and outright lies were thrown out to the party faithful last night? And, they ate it up. The GOP won the last 2 elections through Karl Rove’s tactics of character smears, fear tactics, and the 3 G’s…God, guns, and gays. If any but the mindless party faithful fall for this again, see ya, middle class Americana.
Thank you Dems for caring about education, the environment, health care, jobs, labor, equal rights for all.

Usually these people run for Pres & V-P.
- Senators.
- Governors.
- Big City Mayors.
- War Heros.
- Congress Persons.
So why is it that a Governor is considered “Unknown”?
Last time I looked Alaska was a big chunk of this country.
Like her or not.
The party that gets the most voters to the polls wins.
This is like putting “nitrous oxide” into a riding lawnmower.

- Cuts like crazy.
- Burns out fast.
- Just plain fun to watch.
If the Republicans just jazzed up… This will be the reason.

McCain seemed out-of-touch. Did the green screen distract him? I did everyone else.
229. Connie | 09.04.08
I still can’t believe that McCain met Palin exactly once before asking her to be his running mate. The vetting was 3 hours–compared to the Biden vetting which was done by committee and interviews with 3 children, 1 parent, and 1 wife.
This isn’t maverick-it is irresponsible to select a canidate that is still in the middle of abuse of power, outed her 17 daughter, and is 18 months into her 1st term as governor.
Now we find out that she went to 6 colleges, before graduating from the Univ. of Idaho–a third tier college.
What is the country thinking, just because she ‘read’ a speach prepared weeks ago by the McCain team, we are all ga-ga over this woman who made more attacks than talking about the issues.
230. Ken | 09.05.08
Jessie Jackson is campaigning for Obama, that’s reason enough right there not to vote for him. Just wait until Sarah whips up on Biden at the VP debate. Jessie, Michelle, Sharpton and Wright are all Hate mongers and have never done anything race relations except make thing worse.

PRESUMPTION
Why do people make an assumption about Sarah Palin, when in fact they are only
commetating out of emotion.
I consider myself an unbiased political spectator and for one, saw no meanness
in Sarah Palin’s speech as she stated the facts as she presented her self in a
capable and proffesional manner.
As far as her knowledge of running a government goes, I can only go by what she
has accomplished. I do know however that there are many politicians that have
much more experience than Sarah Palin but experience is no excuse for
corruption.
We have many experienced polititions today that are knowingly stealing our
freedoms and taking away our liberty by turning this into a nanny-state.
The true reprentative of the values of our beloved United States is the
CONSTITUTION of the people, for the people and not for the government to take
from the people and make this a welfare state where citizins of America become
slaves of a dictatorial group of petty men and women that we hired to work for
us.
233. future_primitive | 09.05.08
I see this as a crucial and troubling moment in American politics.
The mainstream media can’t seem to get past the “horse race,” gender, and “Jerry Springer” aspects of the Palin nomination. Who is the father? Will she blow the speach? Please. A small amount of legitimate coverage of this candidate will prove two things about Mrs. Palin. Her record as a mayor and governor reveal two salient facts.
One. She is a ruthless, self serving “barracuda” who will not hesitate to marginalize, drive out, and punish all who oppose her politically, even to the point of abusing her powers of office.
Two. She is an old school, hard line, social conservative, who holds positions that a large portion of the US population would consider unreasonable or even fringe right wing.
This is not “Ronald Reagan in heels.” This is Dick Cheney in a dress.
Between the unfocused media coverage of Mrs. Palin, and the rush to judgement of many low information voters in swing states, a candidate that raises red flags for many moderates and liberals, will garner plenty of support from the evangelical right through her divisive and partisan rhetoric.
Sarah Palin marches in lock step with James Dobson, Donald Wildmon, Tony Perkins and the whole cast of “Christian soldiers” on the far right, who are all for a domestic culture war and a global war on Islam overseas.
A narrow McCain victory could put her a heartbeat from the leadership of the free world. We are in dangerous waters.
234. Tes | 09.05.08
Sara Palin may have deliverd an appealing speech for some. She might succeed in pealing off some numbers away from the Dems for a short while. However,
I have a feeling, as people come to learn of her records back in Alaska, they would find out she pales in comparison to Biden.

“I don’t need a “star” as a president or vice president. When will this country “get it”? We want S-M-A-R-T…..period!”
If you’re an Obama supporter, i find your comment”I don’t need a star” to be not only ironic, but the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time- Thanks for the laugh!
236. Nancy | 09.05.08
The US is falling behind in science and math education and technology. Other countries are laughing at the U.S. because of the way the religious right has control over our governmental policies. Palin is a very dangerous choice. If she has her way, our kids will be learning about creationism in school.
The government should NEVER teach creationism in the public schools; they should NEVER ban books from any library or school; they should fund stem cell research before other countries get the upper hand; the US should NEVER prohibit abortion, but should offer it free to any woman who requests it; we should ENCOURAGE birth control and sex education in the schools. Birth Control should be available at every HS in the country.
Palin is an embarrassment to this country. Her flag-waving criticism of the Democrats is a fine example of how the Repubs handle every issue.
Get ‘god’ out of our government. Put him or her back in the churches. These born-agains are ruining our country.
Remember how much the Repubs have cost this country by invading Iraq. TRILLIONS of dollars that could have been spent to stop climate change or fix our roads and bridges, or fund education, or anything other than WAR. REPUBLICANS HAVE RUINED THIS COUNTRY.
DON’T VOTE REPUBLICAN

Do you think he understands these issues? Come on Palin is not running for president. The man most qualified to deal with these issues is McCain quite obviously.

Sarah Palin’s experience, as mayor of a small town and as the one term Governor of Alaska, is no more complicated than simple bookkeeping. It hardly qualifies her for this important office.
Comparing herself to a Harry Truman is laughable. Her speech demonstrated her contempt for anyone who holds an opposing view or other experience–and that’s real trash!
She showed she is tasteless and that she lacks the comportment and the class to represent the American people. John McCain has offended the American people by nominating someone so utterly butch and trashy to the office of vice president.

You can put lipstick on a pitbull attack dog, but at the end of the day its still a pitbull. Palin is merely another neo-fascist in sheep’s clothing. If you don’t believe me, ask the librarians she fired because they refused to ban the books she decided to ban. Her bitchy sarcasm about “community organizers” was the final straw aside from her fundamentalist stance on just about everything including a women’s right to choose and her right to privacy.
I burned my Republican card and will vote independent.
244. David | 09.07.08
How can anyone make a judgement about Sarah Palin based on ONE speech? It was well-delivered, but not written by her. She has not yet appeared in any public forum to demonstrate her worthiness to be “a heartbeat away” from the Presidency of the United States. All she’s demonstrated so far is an ability to read her lines well and on cue. We’re looking for leadership, not a new practitioner of wedge politics. This country has suffered badly because of the divisive politics of the last 8 years. What can she do to convince us that she really supports and can implement a plan for “country first” - no indiction yet…..
245. LSG | 09.07.08
Sarah Palin is a VERY scary and dangerous woman and she is a “stroke out” away from the Presidency….REALIZE THIS PEOPLE!!!! EVERYONE should be scared and not be fooled by her bombastic nature at the podium. She wants HER WAY and will stop at nothing to get it. HER WAY is not good for the American public (unless of course you are a anti choice, creationist right winged religious GOP conservative who is a member of the NRA and thinks global warming is a myth). MCcain has lost his marbles(is it senility???)….what the **** was he thinking bringing this representation of a female on as his running mate???…now I really have lost the only spec of respect I did have for this man. This country will be in very serious trouble with those two at the helm…I hope the country smartens (mostly the center - the two end cuts seem to have wised up) and wakes up and realizes that these two follow in the exact path of the last eight yrs….DON’T BE FOOLED AGAIN.

Dear concerned citizens of America and mass media of the U.S.A. [Look into McCain-palin sad, unfortunate, and tragic blunders of dividing this on religoius and cultural basis]
McCain-palintalk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, lies and impulsivity? [Danger to country and countries needs and challenges.
Is Mccain-Palin ticket dividing us and instigating a permanet cultural clash within our country. The US, USA, and McCain-palin will should repent now before it is too late.
Their attempts to do this to our Greatgrand Nation will fail and once the Media will start doing due deligent duty and cut thru the cloud so called M. Mccain has created.
As a Independent registered voter I have decided to vote for the Obama-Biden ticket. I am sure they will protect our national security, strengths, stamina and soul as well as rebuild our nation from the bottom up in all areas of need. The OBAMA-BIDEN ticket will restore our global standing with the use of maximum, firm international diplomacy and minimal force if and when indicated.
PS: This nation will not buy into the kitchen sink strategy. We are getting deeper into internal and external holes through these attacks and the world is laughing at us as they enjoy our partisan Pitt Bull wounds. I am sure the collective deceptive measures of the GOP, RNC, FOX, RUSH, ROVE, McCain, and his surrogates will fail to deprive American voters of their deserved leadership to address the critical internal and external needs of our Greatgrand Nation. Our Nation does not need cultural war[s] at this critical time. I hope and pray that media will intervene and prevent us going in that direction.

Sarah Palin’s anti-conservation position is so extreme that she condones shooting wolves and bears from airplanes or using airplanes to chase them to exhaustion and then shoot them point blank. Most Americans find this practice barbaric, but it’s routine in Alaska under Palin’s leadership,” said Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund president Rodger Schlickeisen.
Sarah Palin has supported aerial hunting since taking office despite the fact that the National Academy of Sciences, the National Research Council, the American Society of Mammalogists, and more than 120 other scientists have called for a halt to the program, citing its lack of scientific justification and despite opposition from many hunters who see it as violating the sportsmen’s ethic of fair chase. Palin in 2007 even proposed offering a bounty of $150 per wolf, as long as the hunter provided the wolf’s foreleg as proof of the kill. And just earlier this year, she introduced legislation to expand the program and derail a scheduled August 2008 citizens’ vote on the issue. The bounty was determined to violate the state’s constitution and her legislation failed.
“Sarah Palin’s positions against America’s wildlife could put her to the right of even the Bush administration,” said Schlickeisen. “She is a promoter of one of our nation’s most ugly and cruel wildlife hunting programs and Americans deserve to know her views on such matters before they vote.”

First she knowingly lies during the debate and makes a joke of it by winking to press and now this pathetic intellegence insulting personal smear attack on her opponent> This woman has no class whatsoeber!!
