Palin moving crowds and poll numbers

By Jimmy Orr | 09.09.08

When it comes to polls and crowds, Sarah Palin knows how to move the numbers.  Added bonus for the McCain team, she’s moving the numbers in the right direction.

Polls are up.  Crowds are up. Why?  It appears you can credit the Alaska Governor as McCain’s running mate.

Polls are fluid and as we’ve seen in the last two weeks, they can fluctuate wildly.  They are merely a snapshot.  And the last few snapshots show that people are liking Palin.

It’s all tied up

Most polls show the McCain - Obama contest a statistical tie.  That’s up from the lead the Obama campaign had last week. Credit the post-convention bounce for McCain.

CNN in their “poll of polls” averages five major surveys to get a read of what’s happening.  Specifically, they look at ABC/Washington Post, CBS, Gallup, Diageo/Hotline and their own poll.  They find that the contest is a virtual dead-heat at 48 percent apiece - a three point decline for Obama since Saturday.

 White flight?

So if it is just a tie, why the endless analysis?  The devil’s in the details.

And the details of a new Washington Post/ABC News poll show a dramatic shift in the numbers of white women who, before the Democratic Convention, supported Barack Obama but now support John McCain.

“White women have moved from 50-42 percent in Obama’s favor before the conventions to 53-41 percent for McCain now, a 20-point shift in the margin that’s one of the single biggest post-convention changes in voter preferences,” writes ABC’s political analyst Gary Langer.  “The other, also to McCain’s advantage, is in the battleground Midwest, where he’s moved from a 19-point deficit to a 7-point edge.”

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe doesn’t buy it.

“I don’t think you’ll find many others that back up a 20-point reversal,” Plouffe said at a briefing yesterday. “We certainly are not seeing any movement like that. Polls, time to time, particularly on the demographic stuff, can have some pretty wild swings.”

Palin vs. Biden

What if the American public could just vote for the vice president?   A CNN/Opinion Research poll asked this odd question and it shows Palin beating Biden by a 53 percent to 44 percent margin.

Although this can’t happen, the results don’t contradict new favorability ratings which CNN also compiled.  Palin has a 57 percent to 27 percent favorability rating, while Joe Biden’s numbers are 51 percent favorable to 28 percent unfavorable.

Crowds

Another indicator of “likeability” (and far less scientific) can be in the number of people showing up to an event.  ABC News is reporting that crowd numbers for McCain events have increased substantially since the addition of Palin.

“A typical McCain event before he announced the Alaska governor as his running mate averaged only about 1,000 people,” writes ABC’s Bret Hovell.  “Now 5,000 has been the low end of turnout in the last few days, and the biggest event last weekend drew about 11,000.”

Maverick

Why the excitement?  GOP strategist Todd Harris says it’s because Palin gives the Republican ticket the best of both worlds - a “maverick reformer at the top and a conservative reformer as a running mate.”

“If you were looking for experience, we’ve got it,” Harris said.  “If you were looking for reformers, we’ve got it. If you were looking for a conservative, we’ve got it.  There is now something for every faction of the party to love and rally around in this ticket. You can see the impact already the polls and in the level of enthusiasm surrounding the campaign.”

McSame

Nick Shapiro, Obama campaign spokesman, disagrees with Harris.  He says McCain-Palin means more of the same.

“McCain’s campaign manager said last week that ‘issues don’t matter’ in this election but Senator Obama believes differently and John McCain gambled that women voters would overlook the fact that McCain Palin are just offering four more years of the same Bush’s failed policies,” Shapiro said.  “We’re not concentrating on national polls because the American people aren’t. They’re worried about how they’re going to provide for their families and which candidate is going to deliver the change we need. That’s Barack Obama.”

Poll fatigue

Tired of all the polls?  So is the web site Gawker.com.  They say all of this analysis is too much and isn’t worth it.

“It’s stupid reporting or analysis to obsess over each slight shift in the polls (outliers aside, each candidate’s individual numbers have barely shifted from the mid-to-high-40s since the beginning of the summer), especially when you predicted those bounces and setbacks.”

The GOP and the “Big Lie” strategy:

A propaganda tactic utilized by fascist regimes of various stripes — including the Nazis, who put it to chillingly effective use during their tenure. It’s also a favorite strategy amongst Republican political strategists of the Karl Rove sort. In a nutshell, the Big Lie involves two components: One, you tell such a whopper of a lie that it gives people pause – i.e., would/could authority figures really lie about something important like this? Two, you repeat the lie over and over again until finally, the skeptical start believing it, and the unsuspecting simply assume it’s true because they’ve heard it so much.

3. Marcus | 09.09.08

You have got to be kidding???

She’s no more important (or experienced) than Brittiany Spears.

If all it takes to “revitalize’ Cancer john’s feeble rn at the presidency is a pretty face, well they’re in worse shape than I thought. She’s under investigation.(Nothing new for a Republican) If they’re not having sex in public bathrooms or trying to have sex with children, then they’re trying to screw anyone that disagrees with their narrow view of the world.
She’ has a new doll?? Isn’t that cute? It’s got it’s dress raised and her undies ready to come off. How approriate! She and her daughter can be a matched pair.

Oh I’m sorry. We’re not allowed to look at her failed attempts at motherhood.
Leader???? She can’t even lead her own family.

4. jake | 09.09.08

When this farce wears out GOP, mccain & this prescription-glass Barbie will be dumped on the roadside.

5. Grayneck | 09.09.08

I love america and it’s xenophobic and ignorant population. Sarah & john are exactly what america deserves! I can almost visualize them singing Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran while the rest of the world unites against us - not that we care, anyways. Go Sarah Go - show Putin and Kim Jong your mooseheads and your pitbull - That should scare them!!!

6. Paul E.Tooley Sr | 09.09.08

I really like the enthusiasm that is a gift to Obama. I appreciated him getting the Democratic call. I was for him until he chose Bidden as his choice for vice-president; and now that Palin has been selected, I can readily see who will get my vote. The McCain/Palin. So sorry for the choice of Bidden for the Dems!
Respects,
Paul Tooley Sr

7. Julius | 09.09.08

You can’t trust any poll taken and released by CNN as they are so biased toward the liberal agenda and blatant about reporting it thus it makes the poll useless other than for confusing the issues and helping the liberal candidates.

8. Stanley Bonner | 09.09.08

Thanks to McCain and Palin, I now have a team to vote for.
JUST SAY NO TO B.O.

9. Eraticus | 09.09.08

Sarah Palin is a proven Liar. Why should we listen to her?

10. John | 09.09.08

Your next cartoon should be Biden for President, Obama for VP - that is because Obama has NO experience in change - his record (lack of it) of voting PRESENT over 130 times PROVES he has no idea what to do - but can talk BIG. In fact, Obama is all talk and no substance. He could run for Mayor of a small city but also has no value for human life - be careful, Democrats, you don’t know what you are getting into with him.

11. mycole | 09.09.08

Wow. McSame is a real “maverick” considering he voted 93% of the time with Bush.

I hope women aren’t supporting Palin just because she’s a women considering she’s against certain women’s rights and she thinks she’s some sort of prophet. She actually said that building a new oil pipeline in Alaska is God’s will. That spells crazy!

12. ds | 09.09.08

this is merely a temporary spike.
Once she stops reading off the same script everday, and has to start taking real questions, she will be exposed for what she is.
She needs to go back to Alaska and take care of her out-of-control family.

Shes not ready, and Biden will wipe the floor with her, just like Obama will wipe the floor with McCain in the debates. You can only do so much pandering to stupid people before the half stupid people start craving more substance. And well, the smart people are already voting for Obama.

So basically this race is coming down to “how many half-stupid people can I get behind me”

13. S | 09.09.08

Seems she has woken up a lot of sleepers in the politcal area. She added some excitement too. But, she has an agenda that doesn’t necessarily match those who are excited. This may not continue as more become aware of her actions and agenda.

14. carl | 09.09.08

She is the earmark queen!
a PIG in lipstick.

Apparently, shooting endangered species from airplanes wasnt destructive enough for her, so now she wants to move to washington ruin everyone else’s environment too.

did anyone else see McCain checking out her A$$ during her speech? I wonder if he even knows where he is half the time.

the GOP ticket has a collective IQ of about 120, and it shows. No wonder their rallys appear to be full of old people and retards.
Go GOP! (i mean in your depends, just go!)
: )

15. Wesley Weston | 09.09.08

Palin is a Fascist!

16. fear_itself | 09.09.08

Back in 2000 I heard that John McCain had fathered a child out of wedlock with a black woman and that he had collaborated with the VC !! How come we’re not hearing any of that stuff now ? And who started those rumors anyway ?

17. Colin Jury | 09.09.08

It is really sad when an old man has to hide behind a young agresive woman. They have no answers so all they can do is set their attack-dog to harass. She called herself a dog… not just a dog, but a pit-bull with lipstick; sounds about right for the Republican ticket… no answers just bark, bark, bark…

18. polobear | 09.09.08

Maverick conservative? isn’t this at some level an oxymoron?
but I guess you have to be a moron to buy their lies

Well, lets do a poll with well educated voters verses voters that can’t hold an abstract thought. I’d guess a high percentage of educated voters will be in the Obama ring.

21. HG | 09.09.08

And let’s not forget the former Hillary supporters.

Obama has had many miscalculations. In the final analysis, I predict, that the disenfranchisement of Hillary’s 18 million voters will be regarded as one of his biggest.

Obama’s change has gradually become less inclusive. First they excluded Hillary supporters. Now they want to exclude anyone who doesn’t agree with his left wing supporters.

You can’t win this year’s presidency with more of the same divisiveness that we’ve had the last eight years.

McCain maybe from Bush’s party, but he is not the same. McCain is inclusive. Americans sense that and the polls are reflecting it.

22. Nathan | 09.09.08

I just thank God for John and Sarah. I thank God for he is a God of life and not Death.I thank God for them and they will win come Nov.04,2008.

23. Charley | 09.09.08

Obama is done.

24. smartin | 09.09.08

Only in America, electors favor personality over substance.

When the Terminator was elected as governor of California, US journalists went to Austria to ask the Austrians what was their opinion on the subject. They said that Arnold would never have a chance for an elected position in Austria. Why? Because Austrian are far more educated than us and vote responsibly.

How can you compare Biden with Palin???

Countries deserve the governments they have.

25. dutch girl | 09.09.08

Love the addition of Palin to the ticket. Never fell for Obama’s socialistic views, but was never energized by McCain alone. Now, because of watching Palin, I’ve also gotten to know McCain better and am thrilled with the ticket.

26. Grayneck | 09.09.08

Cut to 2012 for the presidential elections - Sarah’s the prez, the old geezer is out of the way in a hospital and guess who’s the VPOTUS? Jeb Bush of course! you know why? because of his vast foreign experience due to the close proximity of Florida and Cuba!

I love this country - we elect the crazies and then lie/bully/steal/bomb our way out of everything by calling ourselves a great country! In case our frog in the well population has not noticed, the rest of the world is forming new alliances.

27. Mike S. | 09.09.08

Hopefully the American Public swayed by the Palintology craze, will realise that this is an ultra right wing conservative, with no experience, who does not believe in Science, worked VERY hard to earn as meany “Earmarks” for her State as she could, hiring Republican Lobyists to help her to that end. She does not believe in “Choice although she is happy to say that her Duaghter had that choice and “chose” wisely, obviously has not heard about the seperation of Church and State, all of this wrapped in the parcel of Hockey Mom, portrayed by the Bush/Rove speechwriters and Election machine. Also, I find her very short memory interesting. The State Government Aeroplane she sold on Ebay for a profit(another lie) was actually sold by an Aviation Broker for a LOSS. God only knows where this country would be if someone with these ethics were to succeed an incapacitated John McCain. On the other hand the same crew that worked so hard to c reate the present mess would still be in power continuing their destruction, so maybe we would not know the diffeence. Agents of change, indeed!……………..

28. Ron | 09.09.08

Obama is a whining idiot on B. O’R’s interview.

29. steve | 09.09.08

If one really cares about the future of America, it would be wise to protect our country by fighting against our enemys. They have declared their views of their perfect world, which is to abolish all western cultures. Why does it seem logical to apease and discuss solutions with these types. There is no middle ground, we are in the fight of our lives.
Thank You
God Bless us all

30. VeeTwo | 09.09.08

Bread and circus’–polls, elections, dems, reps, chinese, russians, arabs, jews, global warming, energy costs, food costs, blah blah blah. 2012 can’t get here soon enough.

31. kerry | 09.09.08

Can you say God sent our troops to Iraq? Palen did and Bush always said God sent him so if the religious right believe that we are all in trouble in this country…I hate to break the news to them, but America isn’t the only country that God loves….This type of rhetoric and beliefs is along the same type of decisions made to, lets say invade Poland in 1939 and Alexander the Great….

Anyone who says God told them to incade a country without being attacked makes a lame excuse for radical behavior…She’s a nut!

32. Dr. Dave | 09.09.08

Even some postings here show you: lots of people hate America so much that they are perfectly happy to vote for McCain/Palin.
Why? Because they are busy selling the country to the Chinese and others. National debt hasn’t broken a trillion bucks yet? McSame will finish the job!

33. greatspaghettimonster | 09.09.08

yep. you religious nuts won’t be happy until jesus comes galloping down from the sky on a white horse. go away bible thumpers and take sarah palin with you. i’ll be the first to tell you that the bible is a storybook and that jesus was just a regular person who lived then died. global warming is real, republicans spend and borrow, and being an a%&hole is not synonymous with conservative.

34. Grayneck | 09.09.08

I hope McCain / Palin win! Then we can ask each other, how many houses we own. the answer? ZERO. Because it’s already been re-possessed!

Just make sure we write down the community organizer crack well - one day we will find that these kind, self-motivated folk are the only ones who are helping us in finding our true paths.

35. mike | 09.09.08

How can anyone vote for a person who attends a church where people speak in tounges and dance with snakes and roll around on the ground “possessed” by the spirit of god?

She should be admitted to the insane asylum, not running for VP.
she is a NUT JOB.

If, god forbid, she got to be president, it would roll back progress by decades. How many endangered species would she kill off for a dollar? How many marine habitats would suffer? If you think it was bad during Bush, think again. they will KILL KILL KILL. Killing animals, killing civilains in other countries that die because we have been told that we need their oil so bad. We should have been developing green technologies when Carter suggested it, but the right wants us to be addicted to oil so it never happened. And it will never happen under McSame/Palin

(Palin is a cold blooded murderer) She advocates for arial gunning(shooting animals from airplanes). that makes her even more wacko…

36. Jack Adams | 09.09.08

Sad but MCCain has really done our county a disservice by trying to win hook-or-crook. Looks like it is all a game for GOP and the right-wingers. If Palin succeeds MCCain due to (god forbid- reasons), our country is doomed. If only the Right wing lives to their slogan of Country First but those unpatriotic bigots care less about country and care more about their fanatism and being divisive.

37. Jack | 09.09.08

Sarah Palin is like a breath of fresh air in this tragically mangled political system. She is American, upholds American values (not radically left wing values). She is “PROLIFE” that upsets many of you knuckleheads I know. She is 100% genuine and it is killing those lefties. You people make me sick saying you uphold the empowerment of women and then go and rip her character. You left leaning jerks are really pieces of work. I just hope that you reap what you have sown.

38. JackB | 09.09.08

Abortion and guns aren’t the critical issues threatening the countries future, so rule them out.

She got the bacon for her state - she’s playing the rules of the game as set up by all the crooks to the best advantage of her state. Would you deny money that you are legally entitled to even if you consider the system broken? tell the truth. And it was for her constituents, not her.

So, she abuses her power to get a brother-in-law fired. Why? She’s protecting her sister. Not for personal gain. Some might say protecting your kin is an admirable thing.

Has anyone shown she had done anything for her personal gain? Don’t think so - it’s all been for the state. She serves the people.

She took on corruption and one. Her personal integrity and willingness to battle for her constituents *for what’s right* appears to be rock solid. How would you like for her to be the governor of your state? Would you feel like she was in your corner? I would.

And I *like* Obama. I think he’d be pretty interesting, way better than Kerry, Gore, Clinton, Carter…

39. American146 | 09.09.08

What’s the difference between Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin? Lipstick.

40. Hannah | 09.09.08

Hey Marcus.

How about you come up with soemthing better than, “she stinks at being a mother.” Can we get any more uncreative. That is a lame attempt and a low blow. The whole democratic party should be ashamed of you and your pathetic attempt.

41. anne913 | 09.09.08

Come on WAKE UP white women. You dont choose someone just because of the gender…..which sounds like most of you a have already decided. I am a white woman who has 3 kids and work full time, and am glad that women has been able to get this far….dont go backwards “just because” I for one feel that under her special family circumstance she should have not accepted this position. People say she is aleader just because she is a gov. But has anyone really looked at the population of Alaska? I live in a COUNTY (county) that has a larger population. Come on. Stay in Alaska, keep your job and most importantly “take care of your family” evidently they need you more.

42. Mary Walker | 09.09.08

I am an independent voter that may not have gone to the polls to vote for McCain, but I will go now with enthusiam because of Sarah Palin. I have become to respect Mr. McCain because he had the judgment to put her on the ticket. I am not sure there are any others who would have made that bold move. It is paying off and I pray he can pull this election out because he has a wonderful women on his ticket who has a lot to offer this nation. If there is a ticket of “HOPE” it is the one with Sarah Palin on it.

43. Don Malvo | 09.09.08

I feel sorry for America. I’ve defended the United States for eight years, sincerely believing that the majority of the American public were really not supportive of Bush/Cheney’s neocon hegemonic world view. Time and time again I’ve attempted to temper the strong anti-American sentiment growing among my fellow countrymen, always by asserting that GOP ‘values’ were isolated to an uneducated segment of the population that was shrinking each year, and reassuring my compatriots that Americans would return the Presidency to a position of respectability in the world the very first chance they got. I can no longer make that claim.

Every country deserves the government it elects.

44. E Alfred | 09.09.08

I’m glad to see McCain/Palin picking up some steam. This country cannot afford to have the most leftist/liberal senator become president, a man who was also involved with a black radical preacher for twenty years and claims not to have really known the man. In my opinion, Obama is not to be trusted. He has gotten where he is by charm alone.

45. Sylvia | 09.09.08

I’m a longtime resident of Arizona, and am quite familiar with his so-called maverick voting record. I supported his bid for president in 2000. The John McCain of 2000 would not vote for the John McCain of 2008.

It’s funny to me that Republicans were harping on about Barack Obama’s lack of experience, then John McCain announces that the person he deems to be most worthy of the presidency in his absence in a former mayor of a town of 5,000 (estimated population during the time she held office) and first-term governor of a state with a population of about 680,000. Over 2 million people live in the CITY of Chicago alone. Whoops, I think the GOP just lost their experience soapbox!

Sarah Palin is a nutjob. She’s no leader, either. As it was rightly pointed out by another poster, she couldn’t even lead her own family.

I think McCain only choose her because she (allegedly) has a vagina (whether or not she has a steel set clanging between her legs has yet to be seen) and could draw uneducated female voters and ***** men alike. It was a desperate move. That’s not sexist, that’s just the truth.

46. Buzz | 09.09.08

The libs are scared… WE’VE got the ticket! McCain/Palin 08!

47. Cathy | 09.09.08

Wow! If so many of you who have chosen to respond here are so certain that McCain and Palin are destined for failure, why are you spewing such anger and hatred? Maybe a little restraint of your anger towards the Republicans and adamant support of your own choice would be a little more productive. I think it becomes easy to forget that we are ALL Americans - not just Republicans or Democrats. Remember that American men and women have died for your right to be bitter and angry, although I’m sure their preference would have been that we would all try to pull together for our country!

48. JB | 09.09.08

What happens if McCain falls ill and p***es week number one?
Putting the country in the hands of Palin is the most reckless, self serving stunt I could imagine. Country first my ***!

49. smartin | 09.09.08

smartin — fitting you chose Austria. Didn’t they produce good ol’ Adolf? I respect the Austrians and their culture, but with all due respect, I don’t think any country has a lock on ‘best ability to choose leaders’.

Keep in mind, all decisions are not made in the head. Many of the best come from the heart. These people carry the day and succeed at the same rate/ratio as those who are intellect dominated. Don’t make a classic Dem mistake and discount people who operate more on emotion.

50. George | 09.09.08

For most Democrats out there,

Time will tell us the tale of Sen. Barrack Obama’s accomplishments; if for some reason he will become the United States President. Democrats, why don’t you try to talk to terrorist nations like Iran, N. Korea, Jordan, etc? Why don’t you all (Democrats) go into Iran, North Korea and utilizing all the (140 +) IQs that “most of you” apparently have talk to those nations and make this planet more peaceful? Because (most) Democrats are nothing other than good talkers; just stop by any coffee shop and find out.
Also, most Democrats are very judgmental about Ms. Palin daughter’s pregnancy and her family affairs but, like my mother tell us all the time and I quote, “your tongue is the whip of your own ass” Yes, because your judgment will cut up with you all.

Anyway, I hope that GOD still blesses America and that he will bless the new president because no matter who will win he has a tough time ahead.
GOD bless America

George

51. Huhmmm31 | 09.09.08

Sarah Palin has energized the ticket because she has a sincerity that most politicians in Washington D.C. lack. I am sorry that offends the Left-wing body of our country who seem to hate America and love the idea of becoming European, Chinese, Russian etc. I would tell them to move to those countries, but the hard cold truth is, none of those countries would take them. Most countries want people who are loyal to their country like McCain and Palin. Palin said she sold the jet, not that it was for a profit. The profit came when she stopped the use of the jet, thus stopping its drain on the Alaskan economy. She cut her own luxuries as Govenor while cutting the budget in other areas. This shows that she is not just another “me first” politician like Gore who promotes “Green” while living like everyone he is criticizing. Is Obama a great speaker. Sure, even I was tempted to vote for him for a while. But the sad reality is that according to CNN Obama “caring” about people came as a result of an election he lost when he first ran for the United States Senate. It was only after that loss that he decided to go out an actually meet the constituents he was supposedly wanting to serve. Even then it was a ploy to win office which was obviously successful. He sways to the beat of the Democratic leadership and never has done anything to oppose them. His one attempt at bipartisan politics ended when he distanced himself from the immigration bill he worked with McCain on when it became obvious it was not popular. Palin has just brought attention to all of the things that McCain has done in his career to cross party lines and bring this country together. His personality is a quiet one. Hers is more vocal. Together they will bring change to Washington despite the constant attacks and superficial half truths put out by the Obama campaign and the Liberal Media. Fortunately for McCain and Palin all their opponents can find to criticize them on are superficial nonesense that thinking Americans have already seen through. However, I guess if you are a young kid whose parents are paying for your education, you can afford to have Obama raise taxes on corporations who will then pass them on to you, start social programs that have no hope of real sucess, and say oops I made a mistake when he puts his arm around the Russian President as he starts taking over Europe in his quest for power. Maybe you can even get a seat on his advisory committee. I hear no experience is required.

52. tom | 09.09.08

sorry smartin — didn’t mean to post with your name. my mistake.

Tom

53. POTUS Hussein Obama | 09.09.08

it’s amazing that people never bother to do basic fact checking before getting on the Obama bandwagon. Go to factcheck.org, read and come back here to post.

54. Jasper | 09.09.08

I find it interesting that 80% plus of Americans think the country is heading in the wrong direction but apparently 30% of those people are too afraid of change to do anything about it. I keep asking myself; what are these people afraid of? Then I realize that they are afraid of things they don’t understand and don’t want to understand. That’s why there can be no conversation, the discussion is dead in the water. When i hear words like “muslim” or “Socialism” I know I’m talking to a wall.

What’s gonna happen when, in 4 years time after McCain is voted in nothing has changed…are you going to be surprised when you realize the country is still going in the wrong direction? Bush said he was a uniter. Bush said
he was against nation building. Bush said he was strong on education. Bush said he was pro environment and pro jobs, pro-military, anti-spending and large government. Now we know different don’t we? McCain is about as maverick as Bush was.

now THAT’s freeking scary!

55. John | 09.09.08

It’s sad when America gets swept up into idolizing someone over one carefully planned-out speech - no interviews, no debates, nothing. The speech contained mostly of attacks and insults towards the other party. Palin spoke more about Obama in her speech than she did of herself. But none of this matters, because she has been painted as a wholesome ‘hockey mom’ from Alaska that is being picked on by the “liberal media”, and America is buying it. We have had to deal with failed policies after failed policies from Bush and Cheney for the last 8 years, and yet we still take a blind approach to picking our leaders. We have been programmed by so many TV shows that favor style over substance, and we are now showing the effects of it. If this country falls deeper into it’s economic, political, education, and healthcare demise, we have nobody else to blame but ourselves, for falling for the trickery of political campaigning, and idolizing a person over one choreographed speech.

56. Jim | 09.09.08

If obama wants to criticise Sara Palin let him debate her man to women. Or is he afraid of leaving his stump speach and teleprompter?

57. Lori | 09.09.08

It is very sad that it took a virtual nobody (Palin) to energize the McCain campaign. What does that say about McCain when he cannot even hold his own without her? It will be very interesting to see how Palin does on her own with no one telling her what to say or how to answer specific questions regarding the important issues. So far, all I have heard from her are nothing but attacks on Obama and Biden. It might play well to those middle class white women and republicans, but it’s scary to think that Palin has had this effect without really saying anything of substance. She didnt even know that Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were private institutions when she said that they had cost taxpayers a lot of money! The republicans can focus all they want on her now, but her 15 minutes of fame wont last forever. Debates are just around the corner and I hope her lipstick holds up. It is going to be a very long two months for her!

The Big Lie sometimes comes in the form of limited information, or information withheld when presenting a story. Yes, we might want to be cautious of what the media presents to us but we have to be more concerned about what part of the story they leave out.

59. The man | 09.09.08

McCain / Palin are kicking butt and the libs here can’t stand it. I love it. Keep it up, it is driving independents like me toward McCain, not necessarily to vote republican mind you, but to vote for reason.

62. Kerry H | 09.09.08

When McCain becomes president maybe I can get a second job in his administration as ambassador to Czechoslovakia. Or maybe I can be a surrogate son to Palin and get Alaska per-diem and not work the rest of my life… just like her husband.

Sounds like sour grapes on this websites comments.

Sorry, but MOM and APPLE pie are the real traditional America.
She was never sorry to be an American unlike Obamas wife

What does that tell me? She has staying power and is tough.
I hope she’s got some Thatcher in her. We desperately need an iron lady for president to make the enemy cower in fear of our righteously angry gaze. The only way to deal is tough.

The United Nations has not been doing the job that they have been formed to do. Corruption has flowed to every corner of the UN, they have been accused of sex crimes in some poor countries, they have totally done the world an injustice with the Oil for Food Scandal, and all they propose to terrorist countries are negotiations.

Yes, George Bush has made mistakes in this war, and has spent more than he should, and quite frankly, deserve some criticism, but the big idiots are the United Nations who have made this world more, and more dangerous since it’s formation.

I was suprised that only two months ago on June 7th that 500 tons of yellowcake uranium (Which is used for nuclear weapons) was transferred out of Iraq, shouldn’t that have been done in the 90’s by the UN?

65. TKL | 09.09.08

What an election! Palin was the best pick Mcain could have made. he still has a long way to go… I’m fine with drilling but he’s got his priorities totaly backwards…. Alternative energy FIRST then think about dilling. Bush spoke more about ethanol and other alternative energy 4 years ago in his state of the union speach than Mcain did at the convention!
If Palin is a pitbull what does that make Hillary? certainly not a poodle.
I think Obamma will still win… not that it makes me happy… at least our global popularity will improve.

should be interesting.

66. Cathy | 09.09.08

Jan,
I thought Obama was running for President of the United States - but now it’s Obama for the world?! Furthermore, what does Islam have to do with this? I believe Obama has said, quite emphatically, that he is a Christian. And, what is this about not the “right wingers” time? I thought it was America’s time to choose a leader and start requiring him and all of our leaders to put our country before thier own agendas.

67. charles | 09.09.08

too bad republicans cant talk policy, because these message boards would actually be entertaining.
anytime you try to explain to a republican why you are for Obama, they get lost as soon as you start saying words over 7 characters long. you mention economy, all they hear is blah blah blah which they can only answer drill drill drill. Obviously they dont understand the concept of global market because they get lost thinking about the word “global”, understanding the combination of the words would blow their mind.

And for all those who feel that Obama is hiding behind a teleprompter? check the news, he has been giving policy lectures every day while the McCain campaign does nothing but spew insults. They are a real class act…

GO FOSSIL/HUSSY 08!

68. Affirmative Acxtion | 09.09.08

… my oh my how the pink little piggies are squealing… the truth seems to be that Palin has more in common with real Americans than Gloria or Jane or Michele or even the good Senator from Illinois … The senator is so concerned he seems to have forgotten who he is running against…remember Hussein you are running for the Prez not the V.P. slot someone better put that on chalk board for the great orator…it is one thing to be able to sing …another to be able to dance…

69. Delerious | 09.09.08

I wouldn’t give Sarah Palin a second thought if she were not running for vice president. I am truly sick of reading about her, hearing about or from her and I am truly sick of polls, especially when they seem to play a role in influencing voters’ views (Oh, well, if everybody else likes him/her, he/she must have something to offer, seems to be the watchword).

However, I would like to point out to those who have supposedly switched their allegiance from Democrat to Republican because of her presence on the ticket that they might consider boning up on what she actually stands for. We are finally getting rid of one hypocritical cheerleader in top office, who needs another? No one has polled me yet on who I plan to vote for, but for the record I am a white woman supporting the Democratic ticket and would not vote for Sarah Palin for ANYTHING, certainly not for election to an office a heartbeat away from the White House.

70. indi | 09.09.08

Strange, when Obama was ahead in the polls, the polls mattered. And when McCain is ahead. Well, it doesn’t matter and the polls do not mean much. Obama camp publicly dismissed the recent poll numbers, but they cannot ignore the sea change going on right now. So Obama got ahead with his charisma. And that was alright. Now Palin offers her charisma. And that is not OK? All the smears and attack on Palin from the liberal left really serve to prove how Obama camp is so thin on issues and contents. Palin won’t be so popular if she doesn’t have the stuffs in her records. Her spirits, her records, her characters, her believes, her accomplishments, her being a true outsiders and yes, her appearance all together make up her popularity.

71. Gary | 09.09.08

You Americans will get what you deserve. Any Nation that votes for a person for their celebrity factor, rather than policy is in danger of political and economic instability. Your Country is spiralling into a crisis, both economic and foreign, (not to mention education and health) and all you can worry about is the wow factor of the presidential candidates and opinion polls. The problem is that your senseless chasing after personalities has the potential to drag the rest of the world down the same slippery slope. Come on Americans, think with your heads and not with your Hollywood fascinations.

72. Guito | 09.09.08

In a recent interview Obama said his religion was Musslin, then he changed and said Christian. It appears he did not mean to say that, or mentioned it by mistake. He also said “the 57 states of America”, Is this another mistake? Please, someone explain. We know, McCain has no problem on that area, neither Palin. They both know America and how many States there are.

73. Linda | 09.09.08

She can have all the sincerity in the world but being sincere does not give her experience!! Why do you think the campaign managers are keeping her away from the media? They are afraid she will let her ignorance of the issues show. Wake up people of America!!! This is not a high school cheerleader competition, this is our COUNTRY that’s at stake!!!

74. indi | 09.09.08

TKL, American popularity? Where is your head? We are the only super power in the world and no matter what we do, we are not going to be popular. In fact, we are never popular in the Muslim world (because they hate our values) and we are never popular in Europe (because they are jealous). This is not Bush’s making. It has been true for many years now. McCain is right. We are sending 700 billions a year to the countries that do not like us much. Stop that and perhaps we can use that money as “street money” to the people on the street, as some black politicians advice Obama to do.

75. religion | 09.09.08

What does Islam have to do with this election. anyone who still thinks Obama is a Muslim has their head up their A$$. Besides, its racist to sit here and use the word muslim as an insult. Even though Barrack is obviously christian, it shouldnt matter anyway if he was a muslim. what does muslim have to do with the effectiveness as a commander in chief?
i am WAY for frightened by Palins strange cult of a religion. There are billions of peaceful muslims all over the world. the Pentacostals are a small, very strange cult that kisses snakes and speaks in tounges.

Be very afraid people! She is the devil!

76. Landrum | 09.09.08

The only “lie” the Democrats can’t swallow if the fact that they will lose this election to a woman. And a woman who can make a decision. Let’s see… Obama voted “present” over one hundred times. Oh, (you’ll get it) that means he didn’t make a decision for over ONE HUNDRED different issues. I sure as h–l don’t want that in the oval office. Maybe next time. This has got to hurt. First with Hillary and now with Obama. Talk about dropping the ball!

77. haugh | 09.09.08

Its strange that its mostly white-trash trailer park dwellers that are for the republican ticket, because they are the ones that stand to lose the most!

McCain will tax the POOR, dont you get it? thats less budwieser, less camaros, less cable channels to watch nascar on and yes, more expensive gas which im sure their 84 camaro burns lots of…

Barrack Obama will let you keep your guns people! Maybe your mullets are clouding your vision…

Gary, your foreigners, show your guts, don’t be dragged down by the US. Refuse aid from the US, don’t use US as 911, don’t ask US to intervene whenever you have crisis, don’t ask for aid when you have natural disasters, don’t use US products, don’t sell products to the US, don’t use Microsoft Windows, don’t buy Boeing planes, don’t watch US movies, don’t eat US junk foods…. We elected a movie star from the Hollywood and he won the cold war again Russia. You have a distorted view of the US. The US is not governed by one person. It is governed by its value and its system. There are shouting matches in the campaign process. That is normal. Things will calm down and we will always end up with a good leader (compare with many other leaders around the world). Be optimistic.

80. indi | 09.09.08

Delerious,”hypocritical cheerleader”? I think Obama fits that description perfectly.

81. jefflz | 09.09.08

This Karl Rove guy is a genius. He has turned the election into “THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL”. He has replaced a tiresome, dried-out old candidate who is too confused to get the facts straight, and created tremendous buzz about a know-nothing right-wing Christian fundamentalist who won a beauty contest. Instead of looking at the horrible record of the last 8 nightmarish Bush years we now want to find out who is the sexiest, who has the best one liner put-downs? Hey Kids, while the the economy is going down the tubes, people are losing their homes and jobs, and respect for this country is at an all time low, lets have a Popularity Contest!! Its just like High School, wow, kids this is fun. The heck with boring political stuff, lets go for the cute gal with the smart mouth (her words also provided by Rove). Wake up kids, four years of McCain/Palin will leave you and your families far worse off than you are now. Can you afford to play these childish but potentially lethal games??

Higher taxes are coming and higher oil prices. No darn red or blue FOOL will change it.

84. Marcus | 09.09.08

As usual on these forums the porgressivesin this country talk like they are backwater inbreds…I mean let’s look at Joey Biden:

1. He took office the day after his wife was killed and his children lay in their hospital beds recovering from thier injuries…

2. His sons are under investigation for corruption in setting up a hedge fund in Delaware that he had a hand in influencing as a sitting Senator

3. He is not an agent of change…he has voted Left every time..check his voting record..

4. He has said Obama is not experienced enough to lead this country and He would rather run with MCCain.

5. His foreign policy experience can be summed up clearly with this wisdom: he recommnded we split Irq into 3 countries..

85. People without a Brain | 09.09.08

It should be clear to all Americans that the Republicans can easily win the White house office in every given election as they desire because the amount of dumb people in this country far outweigh those people who uses their brain.

Easily fooled dummies…..

If Bush is better than McCain in 2002 and you’ve witnessed what Bush did to this country…..then expect the worst from McCain. Go ahead and vote the GOP in and see the result.

86. Melgru | 09.09.08

Love to see how “accurate and good” becomes “unreliable and evil” when the numbers change. When all is said and done and the U.S. votes for McCain/Palin, the hysterical Bush-bashers will blame race haters, the uneducated, and the religious. Look inward people and you will see what why you are always on the losing end.

87. indi | 09.09.08

jon,
You are right. Obama is a patriot and Muslim is a peaceful religion. When the “bad” Cristian did bad things, the good Christian surfaced and criticized them and tried to make things right. I do not see many good Muslim criticize those bad Muslim terrorists. So unfortunately the world has a negative view on the Muslim overall. That is certain unfortunately. Blaming the west is not going to solve this image problem. But then, many Muslim probably do not care anyway.

I agree that we should leave the religion and patriotism out of the election.

88. dom | 09.09.08

Should McCain/Palin win, I expect all Obama and Hillary supporters to be true to their ideals, march en masse to the nearest cliff, then jump!

Hopefully, it will be televised, commercial-free, and available on DVD.

89. chris | 09.09.08

i do not believe how people believe Mrs Palin to be the next president of the US! can she handle the pressure? can she dedicate herself to serve this powerful nation or to her kids? i dought Mr.McCain’s health, so she is a potential president? that is even more scarier than any scary movie! what will happen if she is the president?? do let this happen america!!!

90. Christians for Truth | 09.09.08

McCain is keeping Palin from answering questions–she is a public candidate and must answer ALL questions. I am disgusted by the strategy that a “celebrity” pin-up Christian is all McCain thinks that voters need to elect him to office. Attention Sarah Palin—Submit to Questions!!! Obama and Biden are working hard to tackle real issues–addressing each day’s horrible economic news. McCain/Palin is feeding cake to adoring crowds. The same speech lines over and over–Sarah in Wonderland. Wake Up Independents!!

So sorry for the choice of Bidden for the Dems!
Respects,
Paul Tooley Sr”

Liar. You were never an Obama supporter. Nice try at slipping this thought process into the minds of those on the fence. One does not switch allegiances simply because of the VP, especially when the decision you’re moving towards is Balistic Barbie. Foolish post. Foolish.

94. john | 09.09.08

I smell Fear!!! Obama its not as easy as you thought

95. Joe | 09.09.08

The vicious personal attacks on Governor Palin by miscreants like Marcus (poster #4) proves bigotry knows no bounds. Then again, when you are unable to mount a legitimate argument over issues, personal attacks are about all you have left.

96. Anne | 09.09.08

Why is it that Sarah Palin not qualified to be president but Burak Obama is?

97. Olive | 09.09.08

Palin has the Power. I caught her first comments after her VP nomination and I knew she was the answer. It was like a Eureka moment and obviously, as the Polls show, I was not the only one.
I am also a long-time Hillary fan. Unfortunately BObama is not and this is another glaring example of his weak judgement. He wasn’t man enough to share the limelight with 18mil. Hillary or anyone so he chose 1% Biden. What a wimp. Compare McCain who appreciated the power of Hillary and willingly chose a very strong woman as his running mate.
Palin also provides an excuse for white Dem. voters to switch their vote to McCain. Whereas black america in general really want a black president, white communities in general are still not certain that they do.

98. gerry g | 09.09.08

You idiots talk about Palin’s lack of experience, what about the experience of Barrack ….. OH, I forgot, community service….yeah, that makes him qualified for president. I think every candidate for president should be required to have served in the US military…..

99. tvi | 09.09.08

Amazing…the right-wing has no honor. Winning is all that matters. The ends justify the means.

These guys just lie and lie and lie, and the media just lets them get away with it. Palin’s myths were debunked within minutes of them coming her mouth, but she just keeps pounding them out, and getting away with it.

100. cheney | 09.09.08

she already has a doll…and those glasses are selling like hotcakes… flying off the racks at walmart. if voted vp she will change public opinion on unwed mothers being pregnant(as long as they get married before grandmama’s election). her daughter’s baby daddy will probably be elected to public office once he puts the glasses on too! tina fey doesn’t need to change clothes for this snl skit!

101. swing voter | 09.09.08

I am voting for McCain and Palin. I was a Hillary supporter but must admit the Palin ticket is going to really send change to Washington.

102. FloridaCounts | 09.09.08

On the day McCain announced his VP, Democrats, Republicans, bloggers and the press jumped on him. It is now proven McCain is smarter than these politicians, bloggers and analysts.

103. Alison | 09.09.08

Palin looks like you, talks like you, is a mom like you, and works. So you women feel empathy toward her.

But she is so wealthy that she can afford to say to you women, “No, I am a woman like you, but if you complain to me that you don’t get the same pay as a man for doing the same work, then, too bad. I can’t help you. That’s the way it’s going to be because I say so and I am the boss.”

And if your teenage daughter who has aspirations to go to college and is a very good student happens to fall prey to peer pressure or goes to a party and gets date-raped, and as a result gets pregnant, Ms. Palin will tell your daughter, “Too bad, you must have your baby. College and your career must wait. Regardless that this could impair your dream of someday finding the love of your life, you must have this baby, even if you were raped.”

This would be a tragedy for you. But if you vote for her now, you will put her in a position to force these fates upon you or your friends or someone else you know. Please don’t hasten to cast your vote for her based on the superficialities. Please look at what she has planned for you, other women like you, and your daughters.

104. Ken | 09.10.08

She must have them scared. No more purple or pik hair heads trying to disrupt this Country. No more 18 year old morons messing up the RNC.
I like it. Congrats John Mccain the next president. Regardless of the miss use of intelligence that Democrats display. They have lost an election because of their stupidity, not because Obama is a Muslim. Demo’s, watch the polls climb for McCain………..

Ken

105. J. Jonesby | 09.10.08

I don’t understand the contradiction, somebody help me.

Didn’t the Bible say, “You can’t serve both God and mammon?”

Luke 16:13 (NIV) “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

Yet look how rich the McCains are. So many houses they don’t remember how many they have. And Cindy wearing how many thousands of dollars worth at the RNC? A daughter of a beer magnate. What’s this about her lobbying against “Mothers Agains Drunk Drivers?” Isn’t that putting your profit potential above the lives of others?

And what about Palin, so greedy for money for Alaska that she is willing to ask for ten times more per capita than any other state, and that includes Obama (per capita he asked for 1/10th of what she asked for). Greed is not something Jesus promoted.

Why are the Republicans so closely allied with the oil companies and big corporations? I think they have always put money first, not God at all. “God” to them is just a tool to get their ways.

1 Tim 6:5-9 (NIV) “…men, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.”

106. Scott | 09.10.08

Will someone please tell me why in the world Sarah Palin continues to dominate political headlines? She is not running for President. As VP she will have little to no ability to set public policy. She is the slight of hand for the Republican Party. Hey look at this hand, while the other one takes your wallet. It drives me crazy that the American electorate can be so stupid and so easily tricked. Let’s discuss the issues of the canidates and which one will make the best policy decisions for the country and stop focusing on the VP. To paraphrase Mrs. Palin, “I might be interested in the VP role if someone could tell me what the VP does all day long.”

107. anne913 | 09.10.08

its all sickening……first barack a celebrity, the RNC jumps on it. Now Palin has celebrity status and its okay.

Big picture here. I still say her family needs her more and that is a mothers priority. IF SHE CARED ABOUT THEM!!!!!

Sarah go home

108. Undecided Still | 09.10.08

We need all the best folks we can find in politics, and Sarah is no exception. If she can benefit our country, so be it. She and her husband alone can make those choices for their marriage and careers.

But McCain hit on the REAL issues — that when Dems and Republicans get to Washington they forget who they work for — the people. I see a “Mr. and Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington” scenario with McCain/Palin ticket, and it’s a breath of fresh air.

Problem with Obama is that he picked a VP candidate that’s part of the good old boy network. And all these years, McCain has distinguised himself as NOT of the good OBN. They’s why early in the race, when McCain was the “choice”, many Republicans, including ultra right Anne Coulter and others said they’d rather vote for the Dems, than McCain.

But all that has changed, which shows why we need to stop listening to the pundits, the cheap remarks, and get to the core of what real change means.

Real change means getting honest in politics, to the best of our ability — reforming our Congress, from the top down and the bottom up — and getting back to basics.

I was Hillary supporter who now supports McCain/Palin. As for positions they hold that are too far right for me, it’s going to be Congress that comes up with the legislation needed. And both McCain and Palin have proven track records in compromise and working across party lines, at higher levels than Obama.

There is some talk that the candidates’ ethnic race will determine the outcome. Well, some will NOT vote for Obama because he’s half black — and some WILL.

But race isn’t the issue. It’s experience, be is long-term like McCain or short-term like Palin. Their experience proves they want REAL change and can bring it about.

As for Biden as Obama’s VP pick, can you tell me why he chose him, when Clinton earned 18 million votes in the very areas Obama is weak in? Obama’s first “big” decision out of the box, and it’s a loser.

We wouldn’t be discussing a lot of this if Obama really wanted change and picked Hillary as his VP nominee — or recognized that his high-priced political PR machine and Oprah’s millions made him look like he’d won, when in fact they were tied.

Obama has launched his campaign balloon. It’s full of hot air. It won’t stay up in the face of cold, hard facts, where the rest of us live.

109. corallus | 09.10.08

I love how the libs eventually come back to how “stupid” the American people are and how only the “educated” europeans (or those that agree with them) vote responsibly. And they wonder why they have a tendency to lose presidential elections. They divorce themselves from normal, every day Americans, and wonder why Americans vote for people they (the people) identify with. This is basic humanity folks. Reagan connected with people, Clinton connected with people, W even connected with people better than Gore or Kerry (both political stiffs). McCain is just now connecting with people because of Palin’s ability to identify with those same Americans. Obama now finds himself in the position of being out-of-touch. What’s so hard to understand about any of this? Whether you like her or not, it was a brilliant pick because of her ability to connect with average America.

110. Sly Justice | 09.11.08

All this doesn’t Matter, because Obama is the Wright man to be president!

111. diana | 09.13.08

Do you people actually think our country is dumb enough to elect somebody like Barack Obama? Geez.

You can write all you want to contradict the poll numbers and reality of the situation: people who care about the REAL ISSUES (our ailing economy, the war in iraq) know that we need an EXPERIENCED leader more than ever. This, unfortunately, is not Barack Obama.

Uneducated people + minorities make up Obamas main backers. Uneducated people usually fail to vote, and minorities make up only a small percentage of our country.

Sorry guys, ***** all you want, but you’re not going to get your racist, inexperienced, and completely oblivious moron Obama into the White House.

112. Michael | 09.14.08

“Do you people actually think our country is dumb enough to elect somebody like Barack Obama?”

No we think they are dumb enough to elect Palin/McCain.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Republican base is ignorant and uneducated people, just like you!

113. Bruce | 09.15.08

Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate, actually has more executive experience than Barack Obama, the presidential candidate, who has none whatsoever. I would feel more comfortable about Barack Obama if he at least had some experience as the mayor of a small town, but that is beneath him (they cling to guns and religion).

In terms of moral character, I would like to have a vice president who respects the value of human life in all its stages, even if it’s imperfect (and has Down’s Syndrome, for example). Sarah is brave enough to take the moose by the horns and stick up for what she believes in, even if it’s unpopular. Barack Obama would rather kiss babies in front of the camera and support laws that that allow abortion at any time during the pregnancy, for whatever reason, to girls of whatever age. He calls this “leaving it to women to decide”. Well, it looks like a lot of women are choosing Sarah Palin, not Barack Obama!

I think Sara is very capable, and I expect she will be our next president. You left wingers need to find another issue to cry about.

I get a kick out of the fact that if Obama is leading in the polls, it’s plastered all over the mainstream media outlets. If McCains leading, I have to hunt for the news and the headlines generally use words like “slight edge”. Our media has become a joke-the leftist journalists just can’t seem to help themselves and what’s truly funny is that the brainwashed left in this country still think of themselves as rebels.
