Streisand raises millions for Obama in Hollywood fundraiser
By Jimmy Orr | 09.17.08
Good money. But bad timing.
After a day when the John McCain staff provided easy fodder for the Barack Obama campaign, McCain was able to play turnabout, courtesy of the Democratic nominee.
Glitz and cash
While the nation apprehensively watching Wall Street, Barack Obama kept with his schedule and appeared at two Barbra Streisand sponsored fundraisers that are estimated to bring in $9 million.
The fundraisers were chock full of A-listers, including Will Ferrell, Leonardo DeCaprio, Chris Rock, and Steven Spielberg.
Plain folks
Contrast that with McCain who was at a rally in Vienna, Ohio — staged perfectly for TV cameras with plenty of people in baseball caps and jeans.
Did McCain take advantage of the opportunity? Just a little bit.
“[Obama] talks about siding with the people — siding with the people — just before he flew off to Hollywood for a fundraiser with Barbra Streisand and his celebrity friends,” McCain said. “Let me tell you, my friends: There’s no place I would rather be than here with the working men and woman of Ohio.”
No sitcoms
The Democratic nominee addressed the credit crisis as well, saying it “…reminded people of what’s at stake. It’s reminded people that this is not a game.” To the Hollywood crowd, he added, “This is not a reality show, no offense to any of you.”
Streisand, who is no stranger to politics, offered some “personal” remarks at the event - according to FOX News.
“I’m not here to make a political speech… Tonight my thoughts are only personal… I can’t wait for the morning on November 5th when the people who said ‘Yes we can’ wake up and say ‘Yes we did.’”
Too much?
On the economy, McCain said Obama was guilty of exaggeration.
“Today he claimed the congressional stimulus package was his idea,” McCain told the crowd. “That’s news to those of us in Congress who supported it. Senator Obama didn’t even show up to vote.”
McCain was responding to Obama’s remarks earlier in the day when he said, “In January, I outlined a plan to help revive our faltering economy, which formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress.”
As ABC’s Jake Tapper noted yesterday, this isn’t exactly true.
“But though the bill that eventually passed more closely resembled Obama’s than either Clinton’s or McCain’s, those involved in the drafting of the legislation say it was more a matter of agreeing on a good idea and was not a matter of, as Obama claimed, his proposal having ‘formed the basis’ for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress.”
New ad
In the “I can put out more commercials than you” contest, the McCain campaign was the first to launch a new commercial this morning, airing a spot in which McCain calls American workers “the best and the world.”

So I still see many so called supporters of Clinton say that they are for McCain, WHY? McCain / Palin stand for nothing that Clinton stood for so there must be a reason. Is it that a percent of Clintons supporters are Sexist or are they Racist or maybe both. That seems to be the only explanation to their flip flop to McCain since he opposed equal pay, child care, prescriptions, woman’s health care, and education, legislation while supporting the idea that Insurance companies should provide coverage for men’s E.D. [ erectile dysfunction]. Dumping his first wife whilst she was in the hospital, and telling the now famous rape joke. His current Wife and his running mate are both former beauty queens this all speaks volumes of his mind set. He is a User, he has flip-flopped so much in the past year that he could guest star in a Sponge Bob Square pants cartoon, So vote for him if your a HYPOCRITE

Among other objections, House Republicans joined industry in criticizing the measure because it would eliminate about $18 billion in tax breaks for oil companies, including a manufacturing deduction of particular benefit to large firms. The savings from the oil companies would be diverted to pay for tax breaks and incentives for renewable fuels, vehicles that use alternative energy and other fuel efficiency programs and research.

Who cares? McCain headed off and made his millions on the same night:

He is just being the hypocrite that he has is.
7. Beyond Concerned | 09.17.08
How much of these millions are from Middle East & China sources. it needs to become public knowledge where Obama’s funds are really coming from. This is a matter of national security.
8. Michael | 09.17.08
Speaking of Hypocrite, did you hear about the anti-white, anti-American politician who wants you to believe he can relate to you, while he is out dining with Hollywood snobs? Give it a rest Obama. Why don’t you take credit for the money you received from Fannie Mae? Nice change you gave us there, huh?
This guy is a fraud and you have to be blind not to see it. It is great to see America waking up and moving away from Obama-lama-ding-dong.
9. Clearsky54 | 09.17.08
This is to “Ron”: Dear “Ron”: Why are you asking stupid, pointless questions about whether Barbra sing sing Muslim lullabies? What is your “point”? That you are one of the “idiots” that believe that somehow Obama is “related” or “connected” to some negative element of the “Muslim” world? And why are you brining up “Hanoi Jane”? If you knew ANYTHING about what happened with Jane Fonda, you wouldn’t be calling her that. But more importantly, Dumbo, everybody knows that Jane doesn’t sing. Again, “idiot,” what is/was/could ever possibly hope to be your “point”? Oh. There ISN’T one. Except hate begets hate. Oh, right. THAT is what I would call being an “idiot.”
10. Rusty | 09.17.08
The Hollywood liberals want Obama, they can have him. And, McCain didn’t dump his wife while she was in the hospital! get your facts before you rant. They both agreed to divorce, after 5 yrs, neither were the same people. He supported her, and they are friends, even now. McCain is and always will be an honorable man. Even if you don’t like his politics, he deserves your respect.
11. MP | 09.17.08
Yes, raise money from folks who have and want to contribute their way.
Neither Obama nor his supporters call that place/people as their “base”. This is a lot better than being sold out, corruptly to “Base” that Bush, Chaney, McCain so blatantly proclaimed time and again. All that Base has accomplished over time for America - are miseries and loss of credibility. Grapes are deemed to be sour when you can’t reach.
12. Ancient Texan | 09.17.08
Without the Radical loony left; Hollywood and Vine Socialist, and School Children that don’t have a clue what goes on in the REAL WORLD, Obama has a rather limited following. America cannot afford the “Utopia” dreams that the 60s and 70s Flower Children have envisioned for this era.
13. Jared | 09.17.08
Ms. Streisand had raised money similarly for Sen. Alan Cranston, who was being challenged by Ed Schau in California (for US Senate) some time ago. Ed Schau’s sin was to speak against Israel’s policies and for a balanced US approach. So, we now we have a good handle on what Obama Mideast policies going to look like. If in doubt, Google Cranston’s stand. Or see the movie Charlie Wilson’s War.
14. jim | 09.17.08
How is it that all these wealthy stars and millionaires are supporting Obama, we all know they will earn more then $250k in any given year, so why is it that they are supporting a candidate that’s supposedly going to rise the taxes of the rich, do you really think they want to pay more taxes?
They are supporting him because they know he WILL NOT be raising the taxes of the rich, just the taxes of middle class America.
America STOP THE LIE!
15. Biff | 09.17.08
So tired. McCain just raised 5 mil in one day from his lobbyist buddies-but hey, that’s just boring, right? The Outrage pushers depend on the gullibility of those people you cite in their baseball hats and overalls. So a hundred-millionaire can pretend he’s just plain folk. Sure his chief economic advisor helped torpedo the laws that stood in front of the Wall Street collapse we are now seeing. Who cares-Barbara Streisand has an opinion on who should be president-isn’t that what’s really important? My poor, feeble, fellow Americans.
16. Rosemarie Larew | 09.17.08

Obama for president.
I’m tired of hearing McSame/Palin’s lies and deceptions. Palin’s interview with Gibbs was one of the reasons why she doesn’t fit to be Vice President (or President for that matter.. who knows?). Palin’s not ready yet, and it’s proven by her very limited knowledge in some aspects of politics, notably seen in when she couldn’t answer Gibb’s question about Bush’s doctrines. McCain on the other hand is so full of excuses; I remember watching McCain on the view and when he was asked why he approved all those misleading ads, his excuse was that “Well, actually they’re the truth”, along with “Well, he should pick his words carefully (when it’s proven to be far from truth by the hosts)”.
President of the United States clearly needs to have a moral, and he clearly doesn’t have one. Doing whatever it takes just to win? You’re a joke McCain. Never in a million years should you be a president.
Go Obama!
19. TCN | 09.17.08
If Obama doesn’t think that the “fundamentals of our economy” are not strong, then let us pray for this country if Obama is elected. He raised 66 MILLION DOLLARS in one month – name me a single country where he can replicate this? We have the highest GDP in the world – Obama. Don’t tell me Capitalism is not strong – Obama. Obama went to a very expensive dinner and afterward a nice relaxing concert with his Hollywood buddies: $28,500 a plate and $2,500 a ticket to hear beauty and the Beast (Barbara ) sing. The regular folks can’t even afford a Happy Meal WOW – and he’s for the little guy – why don’t you give some of that money to the Hurricane victims –Obama? Obama (Ayers) manifesto is turning this great country into a socialist-communist state? The reason why our country is in such turmoil is because this government doesn’t have any accountability. Who’s going to be responsible for the meltdown of Freddie and Fannie? How come there’s no investigation? Where is Schumer? Dobb, Pelosi, and Obama received the most donations from Fannie and Freddie - America. Cried Obama Wolf – “Even when liars tell the truth, they are never believed. The liar will lie once, twice, and then perish when he tells the truth.”
21. ROH | 09.17.08
We have greater issues at stake than who raises the most money or who has the most charisma. I mean get real people… don’t focus on what is not important.
We are at a crossroad that could lead our nation down a path of destruction of all we hold dear. We hear change, change change.. that’s not always a good thing!!!
22. dee | 09.17.08
you just another ignorant republican. where have you been when McCain hung out with celebrities like Duvall etc. americans don’t care who is raising money for Obama. They care that he understands the economy. it’s the economy stupid

First off, you comment that Barbra is anything like Hanoi Jane is just ludicrous. And I hope Barbra can sing Muslim lullaby’s, because there are a lot of great Muslim Americans and Muslims all over the world. But I am sure you narrow mind thinks that all Muslims are terrorists. Finally Hollywood idiots, come on now. Most of the Hollywood idiots have an IQ that is double yours, so what does that say about you RON!

Hey Barbwa- can you actually leave the country this time when Mccain wins?
You can still come back in every year to do your “final tour” again and soak all thoses old lady’s for $2,500 a ticket.
BTW- What’s it feel like to be a has been where either your fans are 100 years old or the only way you can get press is to support a fund raiser for a fellow communist?

Joe Biden is a good foreign affairs man and would make a great sec. of state.
But a vice president, not for me. As an Ind. I would have voted for Hillory,
because to me, Mr. Obama is nothing more then smoke and mirrors.
32. Wally | 09.17.08
Thats cool, Obama has all of the stars on his side. Makes you wonder who’s taxes he really going to raise. I doubt Barbara and pals are donating all that money so they can lower their tax bracket and not be one of the 5%. You would think that these “Stars” that have gotten the great tax breaks from GW would not want to have their taxes raised. I just wonder how many things Obama is going to vote present on if he’s the President.
33. Curly | 09.17.08
A question do these celebrity get paid a full fee for the appearances? Or do they list their fees as a contribution to the political party. And is there a limit to contributions to political parties. by individuals?

36. Tom Mc Mullen | 09.17.08
Mc Cain is so out of touch with the average American and our economy it is ridiculous. Our economic fundamentals are strong was uttered from his own mouth just yesterday and his assigned economic it girl Carly Fiona states that neither Plain nor Mc Same could run Hewlett Packard funny cause that makes three of them. Carly was booted out by the board before she destroyed a great American company and now we pray that the American electorate wont allow distractions and lies to make up thier minds. throw the Republican bums out is the route to real CHANGE WE NEED!
38. nan | 09.17.08
I am so sick of all you Republican hypocrites. All of you are calling Obama
an elitist when your man McCain is worth billions, hobnobs with only the upper crust, and left his first wife while she waited for him when he was a pow for a filthy rich heiress. He was seeing Cindy before the divorce so his wife had no choice. She even said when interviewed that he was trying to reclaim his youth–along with a few bucks. He may have been a hero once but anyone who lies as much as he does and runs such an awful campaign does not deserve my respect. In addition he has put this country in jeapordy by placing someone so inexperienced one heartbeat away from the presidency if he wins. She lacks so much knowledge that they are afraid to let her talk to the press and let us know whether she is capable or not. To me that is further proof that she is not and McCain doesn’t care. That is not honorable.
39. Merle | 09.17.08
Let’s not forget that Obama, despite being a junior Senator is #2 on the list of donor recipients from Fannie and Freddie. Hmm, in bed with the people he is supposed to help regulate? I find that interesting
40. Rene | 09.17.08
John McCain has changed his mind on the economy so many times, It will be interesting to see what his campaign will write for him to say today.
41. David | 09.17.08
McCain worries about Obama being in Hollywood accepting 9 million in donations while he is accepting 84 million for his campaign from our government/taxpayers in donations that he does not even have to travel to get. Instead of doing something to get his campaign funds, he just accepts an 84 million handout from the government.
42. MB | 09.17.08
McCain is such a liar and hypocrite. In June, it was found that McCain had accepted $300,000 from the Texan who quipped in 1990 that if a woman is being raped, she should accept the inevitable and lie back and enjoy it. McCain canceled a planned fundraiser with the sexist pig that same month, but McCain kept the cash.
And McCain received $1.1 million in July alone from oil and gas industry executives.
So what is he, jealous that he can’t raise money like Obama? The hypocrite McCain sold his place on the moral high ground long ago.
43. Cindy J | 09.17.08
I agree with LauraC. There is no room for finger pointing from Mr. McCain as regards the sources of campaign funds especially in light of his obligation to lobbyist who all expect to be repaid through legistlation that favors their agendas. I doubt that Hollywood stars have coughed up this dough with a quid pro quo mentality. Furthermore, Mr. McCain is showing his hypocrisy by hanging out in proletariat land while he holds deeds on 7 houses. Count’em folks. I’d be willing to bet some of the people he was glad-handing don’t know if they’ll have ONE house to live in given the sorry state of our economy. Did McCain by chance offer to share one of his seven residences with some poor family who is about to suffer foreclosure? I doubt it!! He’s keeping what he has for himself. Easy for him to talk big talk about the way things ought to be when they already are and have been for him. Comfortable and safe with no chance of economic disaster. How can he portray himself as a man of the people and Obama not? I’ve come to the conclusion that voters will elect the person with whom they most personally identify. If McCain and his Caribou Barbie win this election it will surely signify that the average intelligence and moral character of the people in this country have tanked. I really don’t identify with a man who ….left the injured wife, who WAITED for him, for a rich blonde young enough to be his daughter, supported the current administration despite it’s lies and manipulations, lives in luxury while the rest of us suffer financial hardship, decries abortion but insists that we will stay in this murderous war and tries to set us up with this….vice presidential candidate?? who has less experience with running a country than my cat does with running the mice out of my house. Please tell me what there is about him that is better, more honorable or more competent than Mr. Obama?
44. Col Joe Bento | 09.17.08
Mc Cain got caught cheating with Cindy who later displayed more of her wonderfulness by stealing drugs from her own charity. Mc Cain cheated on the wife who stood by him when he was a POW and he dumped her right after she suffered a tragic accident. No wonder Mc Cain has called Cindy the C word in public. he knows what he has but I guess the 100 plus million she inherited could help keep him in politics and nine(9) houses without having to get a real job. The lack of morality of Mr Keating Five and his wife is not exemplary for our citizenry period. Vote for the CHNAGE WE NEED America vote for Obama Biden and throw the Republicans clowns out.
45. Gern | 09.17.08
McCain lost the friendship of the Reagans because of how he abandoned his wife to chase the rich fashionista. YOU get your facts straight, Rusty. The “official” version stinks to high heaven.
If McSame is so qualified, why didn’t the Republicans run him before he became older than Ronald Alzheimer? With his family medical history and having a melanoma, I’m not comfortable with Soccer Mom running my country even further into the ground.
46. ezequiel gonzalez | 09.17.08
I am neither an Obama or McCain supporter. But I think Ms Streisand and her clan from the Hollywood celebrities should use the occasion, not to raise monies for a political party, but to help the affected victims on hurricane IKE in Galverston and other cities on the Golf. If these people who always claim to support the poor, please see what is going on in Houston, Galverston, Haiti, Cuba, etc.. and stop using fund- raising activities to play politics, and instead use it to help those in need. As a matter of fact, I think that is what Obama and the Democrats has been preaching for a long time. “That we we should work hard and pay taxes to improve the life of the poor.” We cannot count of the Rpublicans to do so.
47. louisville | 09.17.08
when obama loses this race, his new hollywood friends won’t even accept his phone calls, i’m a small donor to mr. mccain, and we all would not be sitting here writing if not for the likes of this man.. so laura…stick it
48. Rowland | 09.17.08
I can’t respect the serial liar. McCain has done nothing to derserve being president. His running mate even less. The economic meltdown we have now is the legacy of Ronald Reagan, brough to cataclysmic proportions by the two Bushes, and McCain wants to continue those policies–including more wars. Get a grip.
49. Smyrna, Delaware | 09.17.08
I think the American people are starting to wake up. McCain is the only man that can take care of American’s and get this country out of the hands of the corruption in DC.
And Obama, thank goodness you have the friends in Hollywood giving you millions for your campaign, maybe they will still be with you after 11-4-2008 and help you make it in the movies when you lose the election. Oh what am I talking about, after the election Obama & Michelle will go back to their Corporate Lawyer jobs and bring in 4.1 million a year.
NOT ALL AMERICAN’S are as stupid as Obama & Biden think.
50. Andy Stern | 09.17.08
I guess actors and other celebrities are the only people who aren’t allowed to have an opinion on how our country is run.
51. Sylvia | 09.17.08
It looks as though McCain forgot all about his $5 million Florida fundraiser while he was chiding Obama for holding one (without lobbyists, by the way).
How ironic is it that a man whose campaign is literally run by lobbyists is scolding Wall Street moguls and lobbyists for our country’s financial ruin? Besides, McCain’s political party has been in the driver’s seat for the last eight years and ought to take the lion’s share of the blame for the state of things.
Senator McCain has so much money he probably uses it for toilet paper. How can he even begin to understand the struggles of Americans not within the top 2% income bracket? The fact that he even pretends to understand is insulting. Give me a break.
52. Riman | 09.17.08
Strange talk, but when you realize the secretive type of governing by Palin, and of course the McCain flip flops, one wonders how anyone can pretend it’s Obama who is a hypocrite?
It can only mean some ‘idiots’ (do excuse the use of this term borrowed from an earlier writer) just want to believe that McCain is better for their own egotist reasons. Possibly a race or ‘woman preference’ phobia. If McCain’s policies are not a mirror of Clinton’s why else would these voters switch to him? I don’t get it.
53. Wally | 09.17.08
Ask someone from Chicago about all of the great change Obama delivered. Obama will promise you the world for your vote, and he will deliver his promise to you tomorrow, its always a day away. Are you anti Republicans that naive? Were you not totally aware that the Democrats have control of the House and the Senate. Bush has no more control than he ever has. Sure he can Veto but it can also get passed with a veto. Look it up. The real issues we are facing in the US were sure brought on by special interest groups wanting to make more money for themselves but the people pushing it thought were Democrats. I blame them for big government, high taxes, and the fall of our basic principles today. Yea I am being broad but that is how it is. I get it from the rest of you.
58. Merle | 09.17.08
Tom,
Hate to spoil your sound bite. But as usual the left cannot get the facts right. What Fiona actually said was McCain, Palin, OBAMA, and BIDEN were not qualified to run a major corporation. Her point being that running a major corporation and running a country are two different things. She also went on to say that Palin and McCain were bright enough to quickly pick up enough business sense, and to be fair I am sure that Obama and Biden could also. The point is you are taking the statement out of context because you cannot make your case using actual facts, only distortions of the truth work.

Its too bad, her web site says all her concerts sell out, ever donated to anything? If most of these movie starts didn’t waste most of their money how much difference in this world could they make? No they want to elect someone to start more programs, do more, take more money from people that work hard! Just watched the new McCain “Change is Coming” ad. There he goes again. He did it with Osama bin Ladin, he did it with the Russian interference in Georgia. Look at all his ads, all his speeches. John McCain will tell you he has the answer, “Elect me and I’ll ____ (fill in the blank)” but HE NEVER TELLS US THE SECRET. HE NEVER SAYS HOW HE’LL DO IT. “Just trust me (Well, elect me first, then trust me), I’ll do the job for you.” Come on Johnny Boy, if you have the answers to problems THIS IMPORTANT, tell us now so we can enact them. Don’t make us wait 4 more months! It’s important, tell us! That is, unless there’s nothing to tell; unless you are lying and don’t have the answers after all.

Obama haters….this one’s for you. Why do you support that lying bag of #### McCain? You think he cares about you? You think he is for the “little guy?” You think he has integrity? Then ask yourself this….Who hosted McSlime’s b-day party on his yacht? That’s right, INDICTED CRIMINAL AND HOLLYWOOD MOVER, Raffaello FOLLIERI. Your willfull ignorance probably has you scratching your nitwit heads wondering who that is. Well, he fraudulently pretended to be the CFO for the Vatican and bilked millions from investors. So before you go JUDGING Obama for having a fundraiser remember that’s what politicians do. Even those frauds who call themselves “maverick’s”. YOU HAVE TO GO BEFORE YOU REDUCE THIS COUNTRY TO JUST ANOTHER BANANA REPUBLIC.

A response to a comment above; thank goodness I listen to the news, hope others do so they don’t believe just anything they read on blogs. Emotions take over, I know, but it’s important to remain calm and find out the facts…
“The question is, I think, will these candidates bite the hand that has fed them?” says Massie Ritsch of the Center for Responsive Politics, which compiled the totals from data at the Federal Election Commission. The center ranks the top sources of money for each candidate based on where individual donors work.
“For both guys, it’s a who’s who of Wall Street,” Ritsch says. “For McCain, Merrill Lynch at No. 1, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, UBS. On Obama, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, JP Morgan, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley … ”
And…racism is a very hateful place to dwell.

Wow if Mccain is doing the same thing as Bush how the heck is he so popular? Bush’s approval ratings= 15%. Go Obama.
71. Estelle in LA | 09.17.08
Wait a minute. Didn’t McCain JUST have a fundraiser at the Beverly Hills Hilton with his own celebrity supporters?? What a hypocrite.
72. Michael | 09.17.08
“McCain is and always will be an honorable man. Even if you don’t like his politics, he deserves your respect”
What a joke, hes been lying non-stop. He’s a man that would rather lose his principles then lose a campaign!
73. WdeR | 09.17.08
Over the last few days, as the markets have tumbled, I’ve watched Obama and Pelosi, the two supposeldy great leaders of the Democractic party, heap scorn on the Republicans while completely, and I meann completely, denying any responsibility on the part of the Democrats. The Democrats have controlled Congress for several years now. They’ve set the legislative agenda, passed budgets, and been in charge of all all the committees. And yet they say the bear no responsibility whatsoever.
What kind of “new” politics is this? What kind of leadership? We all bear responsibility for the mess we find ourselves in. We’re the ones who borrowed the money. We’re the ones who have lived beyond our means. And we’re the ones who put our representatives in office and demanded that they “bring home the bacon” back to their districts in the form of earmarks.
But the Democrats aren’t standing up and saying “grow up America! Tighten your belts, put your shoulders to the grindstone, get your creative juices flowing and get to work.” All they can say to us is: “Ameridca, it’s not our fault, and it’s not your fault, it’s the fault of all those greedy Republicans.” This isn’t a new kind of politics at all. It’s just the same old “limousine liberal” hypocrisy, which we saw from Kerry, who learned it from Gore, who learned it from Clinton, all of whom learned it from the greatest masters of hypocrisy of all time, the Kennedys, who have been laughing all the way to the bank since the crash of 1929.
And as for Barbara Streisand, she hasn’t uttered a coherent political thought since “The Way We Were,” and even that was the product of a screen writer.
74. Merle | 09.17.08
ezequiel gonzalez,
That would have been a great idea to turn the fundraiser into one for the victims of Ike. But, Obama does not have the same character as McCain. He does not truly care about us, he cares about being elected and furthering his agenda. McCain showed his character when he cancelled night one of the RNC and turned it into a hurricane victim relief fundraiser, even though that meant losing a day of getting your message out-political suicide in a close fought election. Smart move on his part, missed opportunity for Obama to relate to the people and what they are going through. Great point
75. Um Excuse Me. | 09.17.08
Rusty: If McCain is so at peace with the divorce from his first wife, if it was so amicable, why did he call it (the ending of his first marriage) his biggest failure?
RE: Hollywood elite. Let me get this straight. Obama’s plan is to provide tax benefits to the middle class (those making less than $250,000/year, not $5 million/year) which we all know will RAISE taxes on the highest earners (only 5% of US taxpayers). I think that we can all agree that most in attendance at the Hollywood fund-raiser are in that 5%. These are the people who will be paying MORE so that you will pay LESS (and I’m certain that you make less than $250k because you’re clearly not smart enough to pass that threshold) and they are still voting for OBAMA because it is the best choice - even at great personal cost (literally) to themselves.
Michael- I can relate to Obama much more than I can to McBain (of my existence). Obama at least knows how to access the internet, knows how to email. Do you know anyone who doesn’t know how to email? Honestly? I can’t relate to someone who owns seven houses (oops, or is it eight?). I can’t relate to someone who carries over $250k in credit card debt (and that was just for Cindy’s wardrobe at the RNC) (by the way, does that 250 number look familiar?) I can’t relate to someone who would use his service in the military as a means of justifying his qualifications for the presidency. If he’s qualified, it’s not because of his service (which is to be commended.) I can’t relate to someone who hijacks his opponents theme of change simply because he and his upper 5% advisers can’t come up with an original idea. I can’t relate to someone who thinks that the best way to avoid war is to avoid communicating with your enemies. Even 700 years ago, before a battle began, representatives would meet mid-field, face-to-face to negotiate terms to avoid the battle… It didn’t always work - but sometimes it did - and there was always a battalion in the wings if you needed them.
The people want change, the economy needs change - we just don’t need McCain!

“The reason why our country is in such turmoil is because this government doesn’t have any accountability. Who’s going to be responsible for the meltdown of Freddie and Fannie? How come there’s no investigation?”
Who has been running the government for the last 8 years? The REPUBLICANS! and you people are still not holding yourselves accountable for this mess! Still lying, still trying to hide the truth (Troopergate) and still trying to throw up mirrors to divert the truth. It won’t work this time!
77. the man | 09.17.08
In 2005 John McCain sounded the warning about Freddie Mac and Fannie May and tried to pass legislation to straighten out their accounting practices, but the Democrats stopped the legislation. Had he been succesfull the taxpayers would not have had to bail out these companies.
McCain knows what is going on, Obama is still too inexperienced. I challeng you to look beyond being a democrat or a republican and consider the records of the candidates. Even Sarah Palin has more experience that Obama if you are honest with yourself in reviewing their records.
It appears Democrats are so thirsty for a democrat president they will look beyond the obvious. We all owe it to each other to look beyond the campaign and party rhetoric.
78. Big Riggs | 09.17.08
wow, how typical of hollywood. Jump on the bandwagon beacause hes young and black…..wow. he also has practically no expierience, another career politician. how does obama think hes going to support all of these drastic changes, oh yeah the same way they always have, by raising our taxes. He already said he was going to raise taxes on those making 250,000 dollars a year, my family falls into that bracket and we are already paying around 200,000 a year in taxes as it is, the economy is in poor shape because wealthier people are too busy paying taxes rather than spending it, therefore stimulating the economy. I really dont like footing the bill for all of these degenerates and their government programs, get a job and pay for your own healthcare and stop expecting the government and my tax dollars to pay for your free ride, Obamas a wuss a would have no clue on how to handle anything from a military point of view, much less any other geopolitical situation in which he has uhhh one term governor and one term senator, wow Sarah Palin almost has more real expierence than him….
79. Kiku | 09.17.08
Let’s look at what is expected for the money given. Obama gets money from the people, and people who support the people, like Hollywood. Most of Obama’s money is donated $25 at a time from people like me, a typical American. He will be able to address the needs of Americans as President.
McCain gets most of his money from the wealthy corporations. These are people from the country clubs who charge $50,000/year for membership. They own their own jets. Build houses costing $50,000,000 with bowling alleys, movie theaters, guest houses larger than the average home. Their children go on shopping sprees, spending $10,000 at a time. People such as Cindy McCain, who’s convention outfit cost $300,000. These are not people who understand the average American. To them, the recession is in our heads, and we’re just a bunch of whiners. These are the true elite.
But talk is cheap. To judge which person will best represent our interests, those of the American people, we just have to look at their records. Obama has passed laws on ethics in Illinois and the US Senate. He has a plan to invest in alternative energy. This create new research and new jobs. It will build a new economy, and will help make us independent of foreign oil, so our money can stay in America, rather than go to the Middle East.
McCain wants to stay at war, and drill for more oil. He’s talking about alternative energy, but the truth is that he has voted against almost every law proposed in Congress on alternative energy. He isn’t likely to begin once he’s President, talk is cheap.
80. Knowling | 09.17.08
Didn’t McCain have a fundraiser in Hollywood just a few weeks ago? Does he have short term memory problems, or is senility setting in?
In a few more months he won’t be able to remember who are “my friends” and who are not. Is this really the man we want to lead our country at this point in history?
81. Faz1 | 09.17.08
If Hollywood offered McCain the money, would he turn it down? Of course not - money makes the campaign go round. A touch of the green eyed monster, I feel.
82. Dan | 09.17.08
It is sad to see the Obama crusade has fooled so many people, the man has nothing to offer unless you want free handouts, bigger government, more government spending, forced government controlled health care (and how do you think he will pay for this?) wake people, the change he offers is not in this country’s best interest, he will weaken us to the point it will collapse…
83. Travisty | 09.17.08
The reason that rich celebrities are supporting Obama even though he is going to raise their taxes is that they are OK with paying more taxes. They have enough money, and they realize that most of the country doesn’t. They are good Americans who are willing to have less so that the less fortunate can have more. Go ahead and belittle them, but the sad fact is that they are BETTER PEOPLE THAN YOU WILL EVER BE!
BETTER PEOPLE FOR OBAMA!
84. Richardhg | 09.17.08
McCain has so much support from big business that he doesn’t need to hold public fund raisers, or have little people send in contributions. The worst that can be said of the Obama campaign is that they raise their own money from people, little and big.
The majority of McCain’s advertising is under the control of political action committees (PACs), not the McCain campaign, which means that he is not even running his own race. If he was President, the same people who are directing th PACs would be running his Presidency. This Odd Couple is no way to fix the United States after 8 years of man-made disasters, in which I include the outcome from Katrina.
85. Faz1 | 09.17.08
In fact, he didn’t turn it down! Didn’t he get nearly $1 million from Hollywood before?
86. hmmmm | 09.17.08
wasn’t it obama’s choice to opt out of the funding regulations? I thought I remembered something about that earlier this summer… something about the fact that option (a) restricted amount of $$ he could raise, and option (b) was little to no restrictions. I know it takes cash to play and it takes even more to win, but as the cliche goes, action speaks louder than words. timing could not have been worse to have this event.
87. Tim from Canada | 09.17.08
This election is a show of the complete ignorance and beligerence of a good size of the American population. The American empire is in decline and they talk of Obama not getting “the cold hard facts about things.” The facts are laid bear for anyone who wants to see.
C’mon America…take your Country back from these neo-cons….rise up! Riot if you must, this is everything…your future, your values, everything! You’ve spent 8 years watching as it ’s been systematically destroyed! Now these republican idiots are trying to defend a man who will only continue this because he was a POW. They lie and cheat, they are hypocrites…..really WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??? ENOUGH!!!! The young generation seems to be getting it loud and clear, because they know, as with so many issues, they are the ones who will pay the price for the ignorance of this generation. If McCain wins, I will not feel sorry for America, I will not support this kind of recklessness in the world.
89. Kiku | 09.17.08
“I think Ms Streisand and her clan from the Hollywood celebrities should use the occasion, not to raise monies for a political party, but to help the affected victims on hurricane IKE in Galverston”
That’s a beautiful call and a wonderful social concern. I’d like to point out, though, that helping these people should be the government’s responsibility. Bush, supported by McCain, feels that isn’t the government’s place, people should take care of themselves. That’s why the government didn’t help with Katrina.
In this instance, supporting the Democratic Party who support certain services, such as emergency response, and keeping our roads repaired, is the best thing we can do for our country, and for the all people in future disasters.
90. Michael Wright | 09.17.08
It is time for the Democratic Party to stop lying, stealing and confusing. We don’t need your handouts, we need real opportunities. Your Welfare scheme is simply modern day slavery.
I live in one of the poorest Cities in America, Camden New Jersey, the Democrats has been in charge for a long time now BUT HAS NOT REALLY DONE ANYTHING FOR ITS RESIDENTS; as the City begins to improve, they are now through their programs of Mental, and FISCAL Slavery moving the residents out, and moving those they favor in. Black People, wake up, and stop drinking the cool aide.

Hungarian Millionaire George Soros, the founder and primary backer of Move On Dot org has personally donated millions to the Democratic Party for the last 6 to 8 years. He gave approx. 20-million to each of Sen. Biddens failed presidential bids, plus currently funding Obama’s campaign. Mr. Soros does not like our Second Ammendment rights. Who do you feel Mr’s Obama and Bidden will listen to if elected?

I can’t believe the number of people who ding McCain and Palin on her inexperience. Look honestly at their records, she has more and better experience than Obama. If you think Palin is too inexperienced to run the country then why the heck do you think Obama can?!!!!
94. Reasoanableguy | 09.17.08
This story (and associated comments) illustrate perfectly just how far the level of political discourse has fallen in the US. Despite the fact that the US is (i) now internationally reviled for its policies under Bush, (ii) facing the collapse of its banking system due to the lack of regulation (caused by lobbyists and other friends of the GOP), (iii) in the middle of “Vietnam II” without any end in sight, the voters would rather stare at Palin’s *** than admit that it is time for change, while the politicians compete to show who loves jesus more…
95. David | 09.17.08
This is an easy selection - those who think government should take care of everyone tell us how to live and give to those who don’t won’t to work for it (socialism) should vote for Obama and those that want government out of our lives should vote McCain.
96. letsjustvote | 09.17.08
McCain has never had an economic plan, he has said many times the economy is sound.
Obama has been calling for a second round of stimulus checks since the primary season.
Even the current administration is taking Obama’s advise on Irag and Iran.
Eight is enough!
97. Donnat | 09.17.08
Obama isn’t going to do anything the people want. If that were the case, he would have picked Hilary. That’s what the people wanted. And he can’t speak from experience because he has NONE. That’s why he has to read from a teleprompter so that he can say what his speech writer’s & the polls tell him to say. He swings & flips with the polls just like he did with offshore drilling & taxes.
98. Jeb Jebadiah Jebberson | 09.17.08
I love how McCain says all this Hollywood stuff is out of touch, full of glitter and glam. Then follows up (weeks ago) by going on Jay Leno (Hollywood), then gets support from Daddy Yankee (Hollywood Latino Pop Star) the following day. How many times has this hyprocrit shaken hands with celebrities and recieved support from all those dumb B-list stars? Who cares about if Hollywood loves Obama, he’s getting lots of money to push his campaign. Hollywood is turning green, they live in smoggy LA, so why wouldn’t you back him. McCain has flip-flopped on most of his environmental maverickness probably why he turns them off. (Drill baby Drill!) To top that all off, you can’t get much browner than choosing the uninformed, science-denying Sarah Palin. Why do they keep touting drilling when IT’S NOT GOING TO LOWER GAS PRICES FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS, look it up and quit lying to the public that what you say is a solution. To top that off, Alaska drilling won’t help us in the mainland either. Listen and figure it out people! They have no good NEW ideas! Thats why they call themselves Conservatives! I also love how they are stealing Obama’s “CHANGE” idea and making it “REAL CHANGE!” By change, do you mean conservative or liberal? Liberal means change, conservative does not. How will a conservative ever really change anything, by making it worse, like GDUB did?
And finally, do republicans have amnesia? Seriously, I seem to keep remembering the last republican conservative that F’ED everything about America up during the last 8 years. 4 more? Maybe not even 4 more, maybe just a couple. Because if the geezer croaks you have a ignorant, bible beating hypocrite, ex-beauty queen, hockey-mom in charge of what we know as the free world.
Good Idea. Can’t wait to see Palin slap the nuke button for Russia. They should make a Armageddon 2 now, so that if McCain/Palin win they can release it the night of the inauguration. Compliments of Hollywood.

Laura C…..Huh! “Small Doners” and did you read the article you are posting to…he was in Hollywood where they raised 9 million…that seems small time to me….can I please have even 100,000 and I would be happy and pay my mortgage.
BTW….for all of you “tards” out there Obama will not be out first Black President…..He is only 7% African…he will be our first America/Arab President.
50% American (mom) and 43% Arab (father) …..I don’t care about his nationality …I am a a mixture also …..just want to get the fact correct since Obama can’t seen to do that!
PS….Not saying Mccain can get the facts right either …..just don’t want to become a Socialist Nation or worse yet a Communist Nation (Barbara and Friends errrrrrr…supporters of Barry Obama)

Barrack Obama, the Messiah, the Community Organizer is not in the elitist club. How many single Moms in Detroit or Chicago give a flying ….. that Obama is cozying up to Babwa and company raising millions? Not many. Here’s the bottom line, McCain is better off having a townhall meeting with a little barbeque than having a concert with the elite Hollywood crowd. Remember these are the Democrats that want to help the little people. Yeah right. McCain and Palin resonate better with the working stiffs.
103. Me | 09.17.08
Funny how people whose job is acting can say that that people from working America are “out of touch”. Hollywood is like professional sports. Too many issues “off the field” with their personal lives. Not to mention they never receive punishment for their actions “off the field”.
So how is Hollywood different from special interest groups? None.
Do voting Americans take notice to actors opinions on who to vote for? No.
Who does Hollywood help? Republicans.

LauraC: “All of his funds, and he’s getting a ton, are from the Republican Party, with added support from 527s that don’t have to tell you where they got the money”
Actually, McCain’s getting a lot of his money from public campaign financing, which Obama used to advocate but disavowed as soon as he realized he was raising two tons for every ton McCain raised. Also unaccountable 527 fund-raising is primarily a Democrat Party, not Republican, success story. I’ll bet if Saddam Hussein had not been deposed there’d probably be quite a bit of oil-for-food money flowing into Democrat 527s right about now.

108. Francesca | 09.17.08
I have to agree with some of the previous comments: This blog does seem very biased towards McCain, contrasting Obama’s fundraiser with Hollywood celebrities with McCain’s “rally for the people” in “jeans and baseball caps.” Did we forget he has so many houses he forgets how many he has EXACTLY? Or how LITTLE money he actually gets from first-time donors? I myself had never donated to a political campaign before, but I was inspired to donate to Obama’s campaign in increments of $10 every month. Yet somehow Obama in one month, in August, can raise more funds than McCain, from millions of people all over the States, donating what they can.
Also, the few here who are making such xenophobic comments about Muslims, Chinese and Communists - you’re so ignorant.

How does this help the poor and middle class? He will cut our taxes yet spend billions upon billions on energy and healthcare. How the heck is he going to pull off that trick?! He will have to raise taxes. Do not be fooled by this ill advised politician. McCain is the right man for the job!

Excuse me Rusty but if I engaged in this type of conduct Wife and Daughters would not consider me and honorable man who deserved their respect.
“In his book, The Nightingale’s Song, Robert Timberg chronicled McCain’s post-Vietnam military assignments and some of his “adulterous” behavior leading to his divorce from Carol and marriage to Cindy Hensley.
Timberg wrote, “in the fall of 1974, McCain was transferred to Jacksonville as the executive officer of Replacement Air Group 174, the long-sought flying billet at last a reality. A few months later, he assumed command of the RAG, which trained pilots and crews for carrier deployments. The assignment was controversial, some calling it favoritism, a sop to the famous son of a famous father and grandfather [both were Navy admirals], since he had not first commanded a squadron, the usual career path.”
While Executive Officer and later as Squadron Commander McCain used his authority to arrange frequent flights that allowed him to carouse with subordinates and “engage in extra-marital affairs.” Such behavior was a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice rules against adultery and fraternization with subordinates.”

123. Tired Munke | 09.17.08
So tired….on both sides of the political table.
Finger pointing, misrepresentation of facts, and complaining doesn’t change the fact an estimated $9M was to be raised for campaign funds. Another $1.1M was given to this candidate, another $84M given over here.
You want change? Find a way to stop the $100M+, quoted here today, that is wasted on advertising and other useless campaign needs. I know a few schools and states in the South that could use a little help.
If you want change and for people to see the truth, stop the advertising. Stop catering to those sitting in front of their TV and gathering their facts from misleading or spun data. Educate the people, educate your community, and get your voice heard in your own city. Stop the madness of spending ungodly amounts of money on advertising.
**** it’s not like we’re trying to decide Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi here! (though there those that believe that was the case last election - both left a terrible aftertaste)
Yes, I understand it isn’t that simple. However, as you read this you are still sitting in your chair, quite possibly with the TV on. So, get up and do something if you want change! Or maybe your rants and tired arguments are all you got and they’ll get you through slinging your discontent across the table every 4 years!

Most people who are responding are responding from an emotional viewpoint. Obviously it is more important for many that their “team” wins. This means that no matter what you read or hear you are no longer thinking for yourself. It is obviously best to try to keep an open mind and realize that we are in a lot of trouble, that neither candidate is going to swoop in and fix all our problems in 90 days, and that both of these candidates have good and bad qualities. If we as Americans can keep some form of dialogue open perhaps we can solve some of the issues that affect us all.
125. Erik | 09.17.08
Funny that we are wasting time on this discussion. Discuss the real issue - the economy. Yes big banks made a mess by offering and taking loans from people who did not qualify or who were risky. But lets not forget - those people who purchased the houses on ARMS in the hopes that they could afford the loans in 3 - 5years. These people are not victims. They are responsible for getting themselves (and now our country) in a poor financial situation. If you ever bought a house then you would know that you have to sit down and read through 50 to 100 pages of legal ease that states what your costs/ risk exposure will be in the coming years. Now, more Americans are suffering to pay legitimate loans because jobs and spending are being impacted by people who were not smart enough to own a home in the first place. Put blame not on Obama or McCain (both seem smart enough to manage their personal finances)- Place blame on those who agreed to the bad loans - banks and the people who over extended themselves. You can not legislate smart decisions by common people…

The end is near for the Barack Hussein Osama campaign…! He will fail just like his quazi-COMMUNIST ideals and socialist agenda! The democrat, liberal left progressive, socialist platform is NOT America… you are in the wrong hemisphere… WE reward success in the USA not punish it! Osame’a Osama Obama wants to take 50% of yours, mine, and others success… To redistribute the wealth to the poor and even middle class! YOU liberal fruitcakes are delusional if you think the average American will go for Marxist quazi-communist principals! Barack Hussein Osama is nothing more than a communist in liberals clothing!

Dear Clearsky54 and David for Obama,
Nice try with the “nobody believes Obama is connected to Muslims” line. Check out the Sutton admission on youtube that Obama was sponsored by Khalid al-Mansour and Saudi millionaires when he went to Harvard. Why would someone on Obama’s side fabricate something so damning? Mr. Sutton had a “senior moment” and let the secret slip. Funny how he is not available for comment.
And David, have you actually read the Quran, such as 2:193 “And fight them until there is no opposition, and religion (in its entirety) belongs to Allah.” This is only one of many verses that command Muslims to fight those of other faiths. As you would have it, “good” Muslims are those that ignore the commandments of their divine revelation. This could only make sense to someone clinging to the delusion that all cultures are equal, there is no difference between right and wrong, and everything is a matter of opinion.
There is a sobering problem with Obama. If, in fact, he became a Christian, then he is an apostate, since according to Islam, if you are born to a Muslim father, you are a Muslim - period. If so, then he must be killed. How can he meet with Middle East leaders if they are obligated to kill him. How can these leaders face their subjects? On the other hand, if his “my Muslim faith” gaffe with Stephanopoulous, his “57 States” gaff (57 States in the Organization of Islamic Conference), his sponsorship by a Saudi billionaire, and his association with a church that transforms Jesus of Nazareth into Che Guevara with sandals, if all this indicates that he is following the Muslim doctrine of dissimulation (disquising one’s intentions for protection or strategic gain0, then he will have a massive conflict of interest between defending the Constitution and destroying it and replacing it with a Muslim theocracy.
Whatever you say against John McCain, you don’t have this troubling possibility with him as President.

Wake up America! We are in the middle of a virtual economic collapse, the incumbent party has failed miserably. Listen to Greenspan. Are we going to let smoke, mirrors, and smears blind us to the problems our country now faces. Are we really that stupid? Neither party is going to fix our problems overnight, but the McCain camp will surely drive this great country into the ground. Be afraid! It is time for all Americans to unite and come to the rescue of our country in the voting booths in November. This election is not about lipstick, easily distracted aren’t we? It’s time to leave prejudices and party lines behind us and give the Dems a chance to get us out of this mess. GO O!

LESS TAXES FOR COMPANIES MEAN LESS MONEY OUT OF OUR POCKET!

Wow. It seems to be heating up. On the Obama side, which is my side, I hope we can demonstrate civil behavior towards each other even to those who attack our candidate unfairly. At the same time, however, we do need to know as much about each of them as we can. Ariel Levy’s recent piece in the New Yorker on Cindy McCain, while exhibiting a liberal bias, is instructive as to the woman behind the man and the man himself. His selection of Palin may echo his selection of his second wife. The more we can truly know about McCain and about Obama, the better. (Sorry, but I did enjoy the above metaphor about the cat.)
Our country is entering the most stressful period of its history within my lifetime, and I remember Ike, the man. We have enough adversity to confront. Let’s vet our candidates, but let’s not tear ourselves apart in the process.
If there was ever a time when democrats and republicans and independents and pro-choicers, and pro-lifers needed to find a way to act patiently towards each other, well this is that time.
Our faltering, truly faltering and possibly bankrupt economy, the Muslim world, Russia, Iraq, Afghanistan– we are about to be tested as never before. Which of the leaders available to us is best equipped in terms of vigor, rectitude, intelligence, statesmanship, charisma, understanding, and, most importantly, compassion to get us through these significant adversities?
Let’s restrain anger. Let’s give ourselves a chance.

Why are right wingers giving Obama a bad rap for his hollywood supporters. What about the Bush/Chenny energy supporters who wrote our energy policy and supported their campaigns. Is right wing america okay with high gas-gouging prices and government bailouts. Its as if the american people agreed to a “forgiveness” clause with our tax dollars to companies that greed themselves into bankruptcy. Say NO to entitlement programs for companies and subsidies to oil companies.
132. Ban Hollywood | 09.17.08
My points and questions are:
1. Why does America give so much credence to Hollyweird? They represent what is base in society - cut the sick love affair and you cut their power. They thrive off attention, so remove this and they will wither away. Not saying we don’t need entertainers, we just do not need them dictating politics via their money.
2. Agreed there are good Muslims in the world but why has Obama not addressed his trips to Pakistan even in his book, why hasn’t he protected his Muslim heritage - he is hiding it, which equates to SHAME, this in turn leads others to believe that being Muslim is a bad thing. Check facts - Muslims, Christians and Jews come from the same roots. It is almost the same religion minus who they follow.
3. Compare each candidate on what they bring to the table to turn around the economy and I don’t see a good choice in either. Hillary was actually the best choice but sexism won again.
4. Recount and bring back Hillary!
5. In terms of hypocricy - I would look at Biden as well, didn’t he state that Obama was too inexperienced once?
6. Dems are very greedy about bringing in someone, they will just pull the strings in the background and have their American Idol at the forefront.
7. In terms of money spending, Pelosi has spent 3 mill of tax payer money on things such as flowers and makeup, she is over budget over her predecessors, so lets not condemn conservatives alone.

For Jim and other ignorant sheep -
Has it occured to you that the Hollywood Elite may be more concerned about their fellow man, and the future of the United States, than a few more taxes personally? They are already rich, does a little less rich mean that much to them? I think that’s just a Republican concern. Most Hollywood elite didn’t grow up with generations old riches like the leaders of the Republican party, so they can still relate to poverty.
As a heavily taxed middle class person, with many relatives trapped in poverty, I promise you that the few extra dollars I’ll pay in taxes, have little bearing on how I’ll vote.
What must stop is the fleecing of America being done by the Bush Administration, and the promised continuation of the same with McCain. McCain is denying there is even a problem, instead he’s preaching to devisive delusions embraced by ignorant people. “Americans are the best workers”.. what difference could that possibly make if the jobs are not here?
If McCain really believes Americans are the best workers, then why does he support the Bush policies that are sending every job over seas, professional, blue collar, service.. all of them. You can’t even go into the hospital for an XRay, without having it read and interpreted overseas. They even process our tax returns overseas! When you are unemployed, the bill collectors that call you will be overseas! There is no work here!!! EDS is about to lay off 26,000 people because HP has bought them and sends most of their work overseas.
The only thing that will be left for these super talented American workers will be to sweep the streets! Until they come up with robots that can be remote controlled from China, that is. WAKE UP HATERS, WAKE UP! This problem is much bigger than Obama’s religious beliefs. America is quickly becoming a heavily indebted third world country! Does your fear of a Black president, abortion, gun control, and gay marriage allow you to vote for that to continue? If it does, God help us all…

Nobama in ‘08.
Good work, democrats. Keep your chins up over the way your democrat-majority house and congress continue to drive he economy the way of the dodo. Keep up the hope that Nobama can give away the keys to this great nation, and capitulate to every saber-rattler and aggressor on this planet. Dream of the day when no one has to work because the government takes care of everyone (I’m sure the founding fathers are spinning in their respective graves). Let’s go, democrats, and make government BIGGER. Let’s provide for those who will make a lifetime of living off those who dare to work. Let’s provide free medicine and care from the magic bag of money that Nobama has at his disposal. Let’s tax the shirts off the folks who make more than $35,000 a year. Let’s continue to do everything we can to make this the United Socialist States of America, amd let us welcome Hugo Chavez and his ilk to the USSA with open, democrat arms.
Buncha idiots.
139. Powerless | 09.17.08
You people are all fantastic examples of the failure in government education. Civics and economics are no longer being taught (apparently grammar isn’t either) so the ignorant masses persistently sound off about things that have no relevance whatsoever.
The President of the United States has powers of an extremely limited scope and that is by design of the founding fathers. The primary duty is to make decisions about protecting the national interests and security. If that requires running around the world to strike deals and be diplomatic, great. If diplomacy fails and the Military must be deployed, fine too. The National interests also include providing a check to the Congress’ function as well (thus Checks and Balances). The President does not have the power to enact law. Congress does that and when they do it badly it is the President’s job to say “Hey! The people deserve better than that.” Even if he does this Congress can still bypass his authority with a 2/3 majority vote and what they want will become the law of the land unless it’s challenged and struck down by the Supreme Court.
The laborious point is that if you people want to affect genuine change in this great country, the occupant of the White House makes not an ounce of difference. For a lasting change we must all band together to get rid of every politician in Washington as well as our state governments who have made a career in government. Find a good candidate you believe in that’s never been in politics before and vote for them, if they’ve been there for more than 2 terms, kick ‘em out!
If we can all stop whining about things that don’t matter and get to the reality of why this country is failing, then perhaps some lasting progress will be made toward bringing everyone together.

my favorite fact during this election was in the NW times on sunday that talked about palin’s 310 days of working from home 600 miles away from the capital of alaska where both parties had to discuss her level of unreachability. She’s a stay at home governor (and she charges a per diem for working away from the office too).

McCain is a hypocrite. He has a regeton star endorsing him, and many millionares funding him, and he has the gall to make fun of Obama?? As if McCain doesn’t have fundraisers crammed with the wealthy all the time. Celeberties are also citizens and entitled to care about politics and donate their considerable wealth to causes they believe in. No one is saying they count more just because they are celebreties. They were at that specific fundraiser because they have money to give. Get over it.

Thank God for the people who see beyond race. It is all right for McCain to graduate just six from the BOTTOM of his class. It is all right for Palin to attend FIVE different colleges and then take SIX years in total to graduate with just a BA degree. Yet, because Obama has a degree from Harvard, at the top of his class, he is the one looked down upon. Know why? ‘Cause he’s smarter than they are. McCain collected FIVE MILLION dollars from his $50,000 per plate dinner in Florida just a few weeks ago; yet, he invoked the name of Streisand before the great unwashed just to get them to boo her and cheer him, stating that Obama had gone to this dinner that was $28,000 per plate. I think he is just jealous because Obama collected NINE MILLION dollars for his foray into the rich house while McCain only collected FIVE. Plus, isn’t McCain rich already with nine houses and not seven as was once reported. And those poor lil old Repubs who work hard from 9 to 5 and then do overtime and weekends — those are the people who are going to vote for McCain because, stupidly, they think that Obama is the reason they are so dirt poor and that McCain really and truly gives a damn about any of them.
Thank God for those who see beyond race and who have written the most astute responses to date.

A Recipe for Economic Failure
Just as Cindy McCain has stolen her Cookie recipe from Hershey’s, John McCain is stealing his economic plan right from the George W. Bush playbook. He is ill at ease when speaking about his plan for the economy because he knows he has been a direct supporter of the deregulation that caused the failures in our economy. Deregulation has allowed the Wall Street crowd to behave as chipmunk’s hording up all their acorns and leaving the scraps for the average American. His one moment of honestly was when John McCain admitted “The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should”. Where does he get his economic vision from? McCain says “some of my best friends have opinions about economic policy”. And who are these best friends? Seven of them run his campaign, and they are lobbyists for big oil, pharmaceutical, foreign dictators, and failed Wall Street giants. Doing more of the same again and again and telling people that they can expect different results does not make you a maverick. At best, it makes you insane. At worst, a liar.
McCain is not telling the truth, about the economy, or Barack Obama. Barack Obama’s middle class tax cut gives 95% of working Americans a tax cut of up to $1,000. He will crack down on predatory lenders, punish corporations who send American jobs overseas, reform requirements on all regulated financial institutions and streamline our regulatory agencies. “This time - this election - is our chance to stand up and say: enough is enough!” (Barack Obama, 2008)

Women’s Rights Groups Support Obama
Today my womanhood demands
That I conform to their commands
That I uphold the public heist
To elevate Hawaii’s Christ.
My duty as a democrat
Requires that I should vote like that
To disobey would cause a schism
In the domain of feminism!
But there’s one thing I’d like to know
Before off to the polls I go:
Where were these admirable dames
When Hillary was called bad names?
When women’s rights were under test,
When she was smeared, did they protest?
When media sexism became obscene,
How come they didn’t intervene?
While Sarah is torn up to shreds
They lie calmly in their Obama beds
From which they seek to rule my mind -
Please tell me, are they deaf and blind?

Jim, your a moron. When you make 7 digits and are watching the country you love and call home fall around your feet you go to the guy who can change that. Obama has serious plans with energy in the long run in which we so desperately need. It can help US security, labor, infrastructure, technology, and economic base. No that wont happen over night but it seems your long term thinking is maybe a week. If you vote for this McCain-Palin ticket you will be digging this countries grave for another 4 years. That is not based on what I like or dislike it is based on what is best for this country. Something you might want to consider, and something this celebs have already come to accept. It does not matter who is elected in November either of their policies will not effect the way most of us live our lives. The one thing I fear for our country is the ultra liberal Judges that Obama could appoint to the Supreme Court if the opportunity arises. Look at San Francisco for example they are out of their minds in that city!
160. Peter Suares | 09.17.08
Mr. Obama has been associated with a Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi, a harsh critic of Israel and a supporter of Palestinian terror.
He has served as a director of the board of the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based nonprofit that provided $75,000 grants to the Arab American Action Network, or AAAN, for which Khalidi’s wife, Mona, serves as president.
Obama served on the Wood’s Fund board alongside William C. Ayers, a member of the Weathermen terrorist group.
Speakers at AAAN dinners and events routinely have taken an anti-Israel line. The group co-sponsored a Palestinian art exhibit, titled, “The Subject of Palestine,” that featured works related to what some Palestinians call the “Nakba” or “catastrophe” of Israel’s founding in 1948. (see a recent article by Aaron Klein).
What a contrast with John McCain and Sarah Palin who have been staunch supporters of Israel. So has Ms. Streisand, until recently anyway. Unfortunately, her fundraising event for Obama suggests that Israel’s security is no longer her top priority.
161. Not the stupid Ron | 09.17.08
I didn’t know Streisand was back from Canada wherre she vowed to move if Bush was elected. She is a good singer, but a political idiot! I am from Illinois and I can tell you Obama hasn’t done any changin’ since he was elected.
Research this and prove me wrong. More people (mostly black) have been killed by violence in Chicago (where Obama used to live) than soldiers in Iraq. He did nothing to work with the Daley machine to make Chicago a better and safer place to live.
I compare Obama to an unemployed person, who after being hired, immediately starts using the new company’s assets to search for another job while not doing the job he is being paid to do.
Don’t confuse me with a McCain supporter. He hasn’t done a heck of a lot either.
But, at the end of the day, after all of whining is done, people are still dying to come to the United States. Let’s all remember that!

So Babs sang for Obama in Hollywood! Get over it. Hollywood is one of the few place in the US that still has money. Sen. Obama’s no fool. Go where the money is and with the right words you’ll get the money, or in this case, the really big money. I’m a dirt poor Idahoan (born and raised in Kansas) and though I have some problems with Sen. Obama, primarily his inexperience, I salute him (I can, I spent 12 years in the active military) for being smart enough to pick Sen. Biden who does have experience. Sen. McCain selected an individual with very scant government experience of any kind. Sorry, Ms. Palin, but being a public official in a small Alaskan town does not prepare you for Washington. Being elected govenor says even less about you. Either Alaska was in such bad shape, they accept a virtual newcomer as govenor or else there are a lot of “favors” to be paid when she reaches D.C.
America, think before you cast your vote in November. None of these people are currently from the middle to lower class as most of us are. We’re not looking at the next eight years but the next 16. Look at all sides of the issues and all sides of the candidates. Take an honest look and if you can honestly say, “I can live with these ideas for the next 16 years!”, vote for them.

The question is who really is more generous?
The big Hollywood celebrities who think American working families should get all the tax cuts or American working families who think the super-rich (including the big Hollywood celebrities) should get all the tax cuts.
I think really the working families are more generous because they suffer much more when they vote for John McCain.

The night before, McCain was at a fund-raiser at a posh country club in Florida with a bunch of rich people, raising millions. And none of them could even hold a tune. Come on, folks. Fair if fair. Just because Barbra raised more money with HER rich friends than McCain did with HIS, is no reason to get all snooty.
And as far as the TV commercials go… right about now people are overloaded with this stuff. TMI. Most people are just turning the TV off or muting it, or leaving the room when the ads come on.
McCain is so fakey. SOOOOOOO fakey with his fakey sidekick. If Sarah would wipe off some of that makeup, nobody would pay attention to her.

This is why Obama thinks there are 57 states in our union:
The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is an international organization with a permanent delegation to the United Nations. It groups 57 member states, from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Caucasus, Balkan, Southeast Asia, South Asia and South America.
The official languages of the organization are Arabic, English and French. You can put a Muslim in the White House, if you’re that dumb.
From Audacity of Hope:’I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.’
Not to mention his admitted Muslim faith comment on national TV…

“Barbra says women are not that stupid”
Let’s hope you are right Barbra! However the stat (if true) that show that 25% of Hillary’s voters switched to the Republican party after Palin was selected, likely means that those 25% could care less about issues, only that a candidate be female. That truly IS stupid.
Of course, Bush was elected a second time and nothing tops that for stupidity, which of course means that THE MAJORITY OF VOTERS (it was a majority, right?) are pretty darn clueless.
I think we have entered the “Age of the Superficial & Shallow”. And what with it being a democracy, they win.

Funny stuff. Palin is a beautiful women. Ugly women hate beautiful women, huh Barbara Streisand? Ugly women tend to run in packs!! Don’t believe me? Check who’s sitting at the curb during O’Bammy’s BS sessions. Ha, ha, ha……

I don’t think it was Greenspan, it has been the Robber Barons left unchecked, a free for all of greed, festering into a boil for the American taxpayers to salve. We are in for some hard times.

Well TIZZYFIT-If you ever paid attention to anything there has been numerous people in both hollywood and the other areas of the entertainment industry doing more than thier fair share. I already mentioned Katrina, Bob Hope was a huge supporter of our men and woman in the amed forces(more than our administration has & is doing)I already mentioned the concert/fundraiser for 911. Check out The Giving Back Fund. The money the entertainment industry has raised for aids, breast cancer, ms, md-the list goes on & on. Red Cross is a good one-I’ve been contributing to it for 40 years now. Pick up a newspaper, go online and do research it’s all there.
As Janie said who cares-I rather have hollywood money than republican blood money.

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, whose hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our president.
The old rancher said, ‘Well, ya know, Obama is a ‘Post Turtle”.
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post turtle’ was.
The old rancher said, ‘When your driving down a country road on you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘post turtle’.
The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor’s face so he continued to explain. ‘You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, and he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put him up there to begin with’.

More and more and more manipulation by McCain.
This is a very interesting read concerning McCain’s choice of Palin and Republican manipulation from an unusual and surprising religious perspective. I highly recommend checking it out:

What are we thinking people? You are trying to compare Obama with Palin? Obama just went to only one University, oh yes Harvard. While Palin went to 6 colleges before getting a degree.. See? She’s 6 times smarter than Obama! What’s that you say? Obama was a professor of law at the University of Chicago, big deal can he dress a moose? Grow up people..
182. the man | 09.17.08
Sorry LaRae, John McCain did not hijack Christianity in picking Palin. He chose a smart politician who has the same beliefs and record as a reformer that he has. Why does everybody think it always about them and their beliefs and thier needs. I don’t mean to bash you LaRue, I just think it is a bit of a stretch for Christians to think McCain chose her for them and not for his own reasons. In fact choosing her with her beliefs could lose just as many votes as it could gain.
Roe v Wade will not be overturned regardless of who becomes President or Vise President, now or in future election.

George Bush was one of the worst presidents in the history of our country. His stubborn, short-sighted, belligerent style has decimated the country domestically, earned us shame in the eyes of the world, and (though we have had no more terrorist attacks at home) there are many times more terrorists waiting in line now than there were on 9-11-01.
Most of his serious mistakes were based on lies that he could have avoided, if he had been less stubborn and less dismissive of those who tried to advise him of a more sensible course.
Still, Americans are having trouble deciding whether they want to replace him with someone from his own party and his own political philosophies and with possibly an even shorter fuse than George himself had. In his political career, John McCain has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of self control that might be admirable in a bar fight, but really isn’t the image for the top commander of the strongest super power in the world. Remember, we are who we are not only because we’ve been strong militarily but also because of the wisdom and freedoms and principals we have supposedly represented to the world throughout our history.
Wake up, America! Four more years like the last eight, and we will no longer be the America you think we are. The world is watching us for leadership and some sign that reason has returned to our psyche. Don’t get caught up in the silly shouting. This is a very serious time for us. Don’t blow it!

Boo Hoo Poor McPalin, they are just such regular folk while Obama is just such a snobby elitist. You wacky repubs are just jelous and angry that your weird little world is threatened by someone who uses more than one brain cell to think with. I am just a little regular small town lady who gives Obama five dollars here and there and I feel great about it.
185. Jim | 09.18.08
Hollywood is as out of touch as you can get with American values…perhaps that is whay they love Obama - he is as far left as it you can get. “Let them eat cavier!”
PS Has anyone told Barbara Streisand Twinkies aren’t a white meat?
186. Typical White Elephant | 09.18.08
He raised 66 MILLION DOLLARS in one month
*****************************************************
Yep. He is a fund raising monster.
What’s his spending tally to date? Something like a billion dollars?
But it’s STILL not helping him seal the deal.
All that money and he’s still basically neck and neck (allowing for statistical error) with the other guy who has spent less.
187. Typical White Elephant | 09.18.08
Powerless at 121
You are so right. So far during this election season I have seen the Declaration of Independence quoted as the Constitution. Oh, did you know the President apparently runs Congress (I’ve poured over my copy of the Constitution several times and I still haven’t located that piece of interesting material). And the phrase promoting the “General Welfare of the Nation” apparently means entitlement programs. I have also come across statements that we are a democracy and that the President is selected by direct vote.
Can you say pathetic?
Those making such statements? I’d be surprised if they can spell the word.
Sickening and disgusting.
188. Bob | 09.18.08
If I remember correctly, this is the same Barbra Streisand who promised she would leave the country if George Bush was elected President. Promises, Promises.
Actors and Actresses have no credibility when it comes to politics.
189. Michele Viteillo | 09.18.08
Hey Bob 169.. you are correct sir! One name from Hollywood led to todays problems.. Ronald Reagan!
190. tizzyfit | 09.18.08
158 susan. As I thought, you have NO FACTS to substantiate your very tired, star glazed brain! The United States has over 300 million people, your pals in Hollywood, with money, are less than 25,000. Now then, pick any event where the citizens were called upon to donate and I can assure you the 300 million donated far more than the approximate 25,000 buffoons you idealize. What’s it like living in a vacuum anyway?????
191. MIKE | 09.18.08
McCain/Palin aer going to win in an embarrasing landslide.Look for the liberal looneys to go nuts…LOL
192. Bob | 09.18.08
My bad. However, I believe Ronald Reagan had the experience in the real world to back up his talk. Union president for Hollywood movie personnel and also Governor of Californis.
On the other hand, I’m not impressed by McCain or Obama. Almost makes me wish Hillary was the Democratic presidential candidate and the Republicans had Huckabee.

Yes, it takes a lot of money to defeat those who don’t want to see their free ride end - And by that I mean the lobbyists and millionaires that are supporting John McCain. Mind you, John can’t raise much money on his own, not if you’ve looked at the reports. All of his funds, and he’s getting a ton, are from the Republican Party, with added support from 527s that don’t have to tell you where they got the money. That means McCain is completely beholding to what others tell him to do. Obama has raised his own money. A great deal from small donors who have never given before. Talk about representing the people!!
I expected we’d hear a lot of Hollywood criticism today. I also expected we’d hear nothing in these reports about McCain’s fundraisers, let alone his yacht trips and millionaire club friends. I also expect more of the same when Rothschild endorses McCain later today. Just keep in mind while complaining about Hollywood “elite,” that this is yet another millionaire for McCain, who splits her time living in London and New York and is married to a royalty class international banker. And they say Obama can’t relate to them? Maybe because they’re too far up in the tax brackets to relate to any of us.
