Biden: I was against the ad before I was for it!
By Jimmy Orr | 09.23.08
Joe Biden is never boring…
When interviewed by CBS anchor Katie Couric yesterday, Biden condemned a recent Obama ad that poked fun at John McCain’s “inability” to use a computer.
“I thought that was terrible by the way,” he said. “If I’d have had anything to do with it, we never would have done it.”
Rapid response
The ever-helpful McCain communications team — rivaled only by the always-helpful Obama communications team — seized on the remarks, sending out emails making sure the press corps was aware of the Biden-Couric exchange. As a bonus, they included a statement from a McCain spokesman complete with another dig at the New York Times (which appeared to be the talking point of the day).
“While the New York Times and other media outlets were silent in the face of Barack Obama’s shameless and dishonorable attack on John McCain, even Obama’s own running mate has now condemned the ad as ‘terrible,’ admitting he never would have approved it,” spokesman Brian Rogers said. “Barack Obama has brought the sleazy gutter politics of Chicago to our national stage, exposing his call for a ‘new politics’ as a lie and embarrassing even his own running-mate with the low road campaign he’s running.”
Sleeping dogs
If the story had ended there, Biden could have appeared above the fray — someone who is not afraid to criticize his own campaign if necessary. A “I call it like I see it” guy. His statement could have been viewed as refreshing candor in a sea of negativity and spin.
Not so fast
Of course with Joe Biden it’s not that easy. He was apparently commenting on a commercial he had never seen. At least that’s the spin now.
In a late night email from the Obama camp, a new Biden statement emerged.
“I was asked about an ad I’d never seen, reacting merely to press reports,” Biden explained. “Having now reviewed the ad, it is even more clear to me that given the disgraceful tenor of Senator McCain’s ads and their persistent falsehoods, his campaign is in no position to criticize…”
Flip flop
The sudden change of heart makes you wonder: If it were up to Biden, would he have reversed his position? Or did the Obama communications team deem it necessary to pull the U-turn?
Disco
The ad in question entitled “Still” brings back the early ’80s complete, with disco balls, Rubik’s cubes, turntables, and a freshman congressman named John McCain.
The ad reads: “Things have changed in the last 26 years, but McCain hasn’t. He admits he doesn’t know how to use a computer, can’t send an email.”
The video clip of the Biden-Couric exchange is below.
Usually, it’s one campaign reacting to another campaign’s ads. On this one, things came full circle.

Presidents need not know how to “fly a jet”. The same can not be reasonably said about basic computer knowledge. Most U.S. citizens have at least a modest knowledge of such things. The man who does not is arguably out of touch with those people. Anyone else seeing a trend here?
4. Pat | 09.23.08
“He who slingeth mud looses ground.”??? With that kind of methodology, McCain should be out of the race already… He was throwing mud from day 1.
5. Ed | 09.23.08
John,
Are you seriously comparing one of the most common forms of communication of the 21st century with some 20th century form of transportation? The two have absolutely nothing in common and the fact that you’ve even tried to compare the two shows just how much you understand about analogies and the issue at hand.
This isn’t mud slinging, its the truth. McCain does not and can not use a comptuer for communications. In this day and age an understanding of the infrastructure that supports industry, commerce, and his ever so favorite privatization is high along with those other important issues in order to keep this country on its own two feet. Apparently you’d rather talk about airplanes than the issue. Congrats on being a republican that knows at least how to retort in GOP fashion. No response, just make a generic excuse.
6. smc | 09.23.08
I don’t know about the rest of you, but between the media and the politicians, this election has become more than a little out of touch where ‘we the people’ live and breath. Is this really the best our country can come up with? With over 300 MILLION PEOPLE in our country (albeit some illegally), we come up with these 4 as the best possible folks to reside in the most powerful office in the world? I guess it’s our fault.
At this point, I lean McCain. Not because he is ‘great’. Not because he is ‘worthy’, but because he is the ‘lesser of two evils’. With a Dem Congress, he won’t be able to do too much harm. And one thing is for sure… they better learn to play nice (Dems and Repubs) or we will throw out them ALL out of office next time around! While Obama seems like a nice enough guy, he has no track record of working with the other side of the aisle (and I mean NO track record). We can’t afford that anymore (IMHO).
PEACE!!!

*He who slingeth mud looses ground.*
The Republicans WHOLE CAMPAIGN is to “slingeth” mud. Maybe Obama can just ride on a jet and land on an aircraft carrier and say “Mission Accomplished.”
8. George | 09.23.08
That McCain is cluelessly incompetetent is, unfortunately, a very important election issue. 26 years in Congress and he still can’t send and receive email? He should be back in community college taking remedial classes, not running for president.
9. George Washington | 09.23.08
Perhaps Biden’s foot in mouth is not nearly egregious as Osama’s having nothing of substance in his oily suit. Nevertheless, we should acknowledge Osama as the “drive-by politician” who shoots, snipes, and back stabs others who actually did show up in the Senate and who did cast their votes on difficult issues.
10. Jeffrey Bobbin | 09.23.08
What! are you kidding me. I’d rather have a president that knews how to use a computer than fly a jet. Hey,doesn’t GW know how to fly a jet???
11. smeric28 | 09.23.08
Obama does however know how to drive a car. Just like every other normal American. All of my grandparents figured out email years ago what’s mccain’s problem.
12. Jason | 09.23.08
The news media is pathetic by allowing themselves to be “wrked” by the McCain campaign. these are legitimate question and they avoid answer and claim “media bias” This is getting old fast and they need to answer legitimate press questions.
Republicans are mad because their lies don’t last more than 5 minutes and they can’t defend them
13. ken spruill | 09.23.08
Well if he cannot fly a jet, he cannot crash and be captured either. How about Katie Couric explaining why they edited McSame’s answer to the question about the Anbar Awakening. Where they removed his Wrong answer and edited it with an answer he gave to another question…… Katie Couric is 150% in the tank for McSame. How about that.
14. KMC | 09.23.08
a better match: obama vs. palin, smooth vs smooth
mccain vs. biden. gaffe vs. gaffe
it is more and more apparent that the muddled messages from mccain….who is burdened by bush and his economic and war mismanagement may hand this thing to the most extreme left candidate ever, that is, obama….reminds me of 1980 in reverse….people say 1960 but i disagree because kennedy was a clinton democratic, obama is a mcgovern democratic….but all that is lost because of the economic upheaval….
15. Sundeep Malladi | 09.23.08
@Bill Dillon - Actually, McCain didn’t crash 5 planes.
http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/did_mccain_crash_five_planes_did_he.html
16. Phyllis | 09.23.08
I wouldn’t really say John McCain knows how to fly a “jet” either… First off, he flew “bombers,” not jets.
And second of all…he lost FIVE US NAVY AIRCRAFTS!!! That’s not exactly someone who I’d trust to fly a successful mission….
17. Keyth Lombard | 09.23.08
It was made clear in the 80’s that the reason John McCain can’t type is because he lacks the manual dexterity to do so as a result of the torture he endured in Vietnam.
18. John | 09.23.08
So people think it’s an issue that Biden flip flops on a ridiculous ad campaign, but when McCain flip flops on issues it’s given a free ride. Such as McCain calling the economy sound and then moments later declaring it in a serious situation. Or when he was for a womans right to choice in cases of rape, incest or the life of the woman, but now his platform eliminates all those exceptions. Or when he was against regulations on corporate america, until now when regulations seem to be the popular sentiment in the country, considering the dire situation that corporate greed has put us in. I could go on and on. This guy has sold out all of his beliefs just to pander to the extreme right wing and will do and say anything to get elected. I used to respect him tremendously, not any longer.
20. Sherman Smith | 09.23.08
Basic computer knowledge a necessity to be President? Really? I don’t see that anywhere in our Constitution. Our President needs command experience, dealing with people, the ability to make decisions in the face of danger and threats in a calm manner. To uphold the tenets of the Constitution, and to do what is best for the country, not his party.
Barack Hussein Obama has none of these attributes. He’s never held a real job, has no command or decision making experience. I don’t believe that BHO would lead our country in a manner that is faithful to our Constitution. We do know about him sitting for 14 years under a man who espoused hatred toward white people & Jews, associated with Nation of Islam, and traveled to Libya. That we do know. And, he’s for murdering innocent babies in the womb. Yes, we know too much.
21. scott truett | 09.23.08
McCain does not email or use a computer because his war injuries prevent him from using a keyboard! It is a painful & very slow task to type for him. You fortunate people that can easily type- do you also condemn amputees that can’t walk?
22. margret thatcher | 09.23.08
Hahaha its so funny when the republicans do this and its all good, but when they get stumped by the democrats they make a big fuss. I wouldn’t let a retard president into office that couldn’t even email LOL!
Is this how JOhn MC MUffin is going to make are are country look strong? Everyone in government will have to go back to the old paper filing systems and ditch there pc if this guy gets in office.
23. Tim | 09.23.08
I can use a computer to find out information on things I don’t understand.
Imagine what McCain would be able to find out about the economy if he knew how to use the keyboard/mouse.
Maybe he should invest in an Online education program. Wait, he can’t because he can’t use a keyboard and mouse.
Maybe he could go on the internet and find out what cool new renewable energy is being produceds…oh wait.
Maybe he could go on the internet and find out how many people lost their homes this year….oh wait.
Maybe he could go on the internet and find out how many houses he owns…oh wait.
Maybe he could go on the internet and find out Obama’s REAL economic tax plan instead of lying that Obama will raise everyone’s taxes….oh wait.
I guess he could pay someone our tax dollars to click the mouse for him. But then the guy in charge of the mouse will be in charge of McCain’s information, and therefore in charge of McCain’s opinions.

25. Brent | 09.23.08
SMC: “With a Dem Congress, he (McCain) won’t be able to do too much harm.”
Not true. Just look at how bad Bush has been able to screw things up. McCain’s decision-making style is very similar to Bush, with a few hand-picked advisors having the most influence, and “from the gut” decisions like his vice presidential pick. The good news is that McCain would probably only have 2-3 years of decision-making before his ever-recurring cancer forces him out of office… the bad news is that Palin would then take over.
26. George Washington | 09.23.08
Osama also knows how to prostitute himself in buying votes with unwarranted, illogical, unearned affirmative action as well as with forced school bussing and welfare state entitlements…the “change you can count on.” When your socialist messiah finally has everyone on the dole, who the **** is going to pay the bills? Nothing comes of nothing.
27. Chris Cashen | 09.23.08
My understanding is that McCain doesn’t use email etc because he has difficulty typing due to his war injuries. If true, those who consider him a Luddite should swallow hard, and find more appropriate ways to criticize.
28. walksalone | 09.23.08
The next President John McCain cant fly a jet because everyone of his fingers were busted in POW Camp protecting your worthless liberal a$$es
29. lil_Jean | 09.23.08
I mean I’m all for Obama, however, I wish he wouldn’t have stooped to McCain’s level like this. Granted I think the computer thing is a HUGE issue. I would like to think our possible future presidents are more mature than to call each other names. This is a presidency not high school. This information should have never been included in Obama’s presidential campaign but I also agree what McCain/Palin have done is way worse!
30. smc | 09.23.08
Just to clarify… it’s not that he knows nothing about technology. He’s known for being technology savvy and has done quite a bit to drive the technology market. He didn’t “Invent the Blackberry”, but he’s been a strong proponent of technology advances. The reason he doesn’t do much with a computer himself is because he physically cannot use a keyboard without experiencing a fair amount of pain. He has said repeatedly that he DOES do email (I think it’s mostly with family). You would never hear him discuss the pain issue. He’s never been one to do that.
Gotta give him a ‘little’ grace on this one. He’s not a techno moron.
PEACE.
31. theLarry | 09.23.08
well, as a republican, I’m very thankful for Obamas decision making ability. In Joe Biden, he has truly given us a gift. Now all some moderately intelligent media person has to do is string together all the things Joe has said. get the popcorn.
32. FactCheck | 09.23.08
How about a bit of fact?
http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/is_mccain_unable_to_use_a_computer.html
This ad is blantly and sadly a smear. Let’s ridicule instead of promoting real issues.
I am displeased by this sort of tactic from either party. Two wrongs do not make a right.
33. janlyn | 09.23.08
Everyone should be relieved to know that McCain is working on his keyboarding skills. Despite is inability to complete many of the common tasks most people enjoy (like combing hair, tying shoes, etc.), due to the permanent injuries he received from the staff and the Hanoi Hilton, McCain wants his own email address on yahoo.com.
I just want to know if Obama can build computers? I am a 60 year old grandmother and I can. Therefore, Obama should do the same if he expects me to vote for him.
Just kidding, I am not voting for him anyway.
34. TommyF | 09.23.08
You all say “way worse.” What has McCain done which is “way worse?” Elaborate with details. No personal attacks on me, no attacks on McCain’s age, his psychological state (of which you have no knowledge), or his choice of Sarah Palin. What of McCain’s ADS are “way worse?” Name the ads and show the differences. Do the work. Let’s see proof.
35. Sebilrazen | 09.23.08
@ Keyth Lombard - he could hunt and peck like all the arthritis infected elderly if wanted to.
36. Your right (Pat | 09.23.08) | 09.23.08
“He who slingeth mud looses ground.”??? With that kind of methodology, McCain should be out of the race already… He was throwing mud from day 1…..
But - many of our citizens are not indepth enough to realize just how deep or fast we are sinking. There seems to be more concern of sticking to the party…or sticking it so somebody that what is best for our country as a whole. It is really said. The party should not matter more than the county, principals and morale values.
37. gander | 09.23.08
Almost everyone could walk…. except FDR.
How could someone that couldn’t walk be president?
And by the way, McCain also doesn’t know how to take money under the table. Can Obama say the same? no.
38. Pittsburgh Conservative | 09.23.08
It’s not that John McCain isn’t smart enough to use a PC - it is that he can’t use it from his war injuries, obtained on our behalf. Shame on you Barrack Obama. Senator Biden, your first version of the story was right on - it was terrible. Obviously, anyone smart enough to fly a fighter jet has the smarts to use a PC, and moreover,John McCain has the smarts and experience to lead this country.
39. Steph | 09.23.08
I don’t believe the leader of the free world is sitting around typing out his own email responses - or flying his own jet for that matter. Seems to me, people are losing focus of what the article and ad are about - and that is - slimy politics. I would have at least respected Biden had he just stuck with what he felt instead of back-peddling. At least McCain has backbone (which we need on the international front) and is a person of integrity. Too bad the same can’t be said for Obama or Biden.
40. ComeOn | 09.23.08
Are you guys honestly suggesting that disabled people don’t use the internet??? Come on… I know of blind people who use the Internet every day on braille-based web browsers.
To even suggest that disabled people can’t use computers is beyond comprehension. And the suggestion is insulting to those who have disabilities.
41. Bill | 09.23.08
Ten trillion in national debt with another $400 plus billion to be added next year, plus unknown amounts of the $700 Billion package for the financial sector, we are approaching $35,000 of debt for ever man, woman, and child in the country. Add soaring health care costs, increasing numbers of uninsured, social security headed toward insolvency, home foreclosures at record highs, a negative net worth of the boomer generation, public school student’s internationally competitive rating plummeting below 20th and the majority of our STEM graduate programs filled with foreign nationals who are increasingly headed home after graduation and our political discussions focus on lipstick, computer literacy, and flying a jet? A pox on the irrelevant political campaigns and those that cover them.
42. Brian | 09.23.08
It’s a non-issue anyway. Why criticize his computer skills when every other aspect of his political life comes up short? This is a man who has been essentially ineffective in “changing the system” for the better part of two decades, who has a largely undeserved reputation as a “maverick.”
If you haven’t been a maverick for a decade (and McCain hasn’t), you’re not a maverick.
Dirty ads only make sense when a candidate’s political reputation is unassailable (as Obama’s is, hence the dirty McCain ads). In McCain’s case, he’s done nothing but blunder after blunder for 26 years. There are plenty of legitimate ways to criticize this man!
43. Kate Davis | 09.23.08
Senator McCain does send and receive email, and take advantage of web technologies. The Senator cannot physically use a keyboard or mouse (or even a pen) easily due to his improperly healed torture injuries.
When I served Senator McCain as a Delegate to the 2000 RNC, I fully expected to received a personalized autograph in my copy of “Faith of my Fathers”. After seeing how deliberately and carefully he signed his name, due to those injuries, I decided my book did not need a signature, and just proudly shook his hand.
His family and staff help him read and write emails and surf the web. Perhaps we should start berating amputees for not standing when being acknowledged — but wait, the Obama-Biden campaign does that too!
44. Jwoods | 09.23.08
Ok so as I read this article Im upset first off…has anyone bothered to actually realize why McCain does not use email? Lets see oh yes he was injured as a POW he cannot tie his shoes let alone type…Personally I find these attacks stupid and pointless. Am I for McCain no…am I for Obama no..all Im saying is focus on more important issues vs something stupid like email and jets…really people does this help our financial being as a country?
45. Jeff H. | 09.23.08
Great. Let’s focus on this for the next 40 days instead of the collapse of our economy and any sort of important issues. I lost the great respect I had for the CSM after reading this article. The media is, indeed, leading the apocalyptic horse towards the gates of fiery abyss.
I have a great new slogan now for our coming neo-Malthusian collapse: “A return to substance.”
46. smc | 09.23.08
DRiley Says: “Obama doesn’t have to fly a jet. He can book one online.”
I’m a Repub… but I gotta admit… THAT’s FUNNY! Granted, McCain doesn’t use a keyboard because of his physical limitations, but I thought that was a comical quip!
And BRENT, I hear what you are saying, but PLEASE tell me that you are not so blind as to see the role that the DEMS have also played in all of these issues (economy, immigration, mud-slinging, partisanship…). Bush’s approval rating is 50% higher than that of Congress. I’m totally okay with you criticizing Bush as long as you can be just as hard on the Dems. NOBODY is clean right now. They have ALL let us down.
Also, please recall that the economy was tanking quickly when Bush came on the scene. Folks don’t want to remember that. To think that things would be vastly different if Clinton was given 8 more years or if Kerry or Gore had won is probably a bit naive. My take is that while Clinton was in bed with Monica, all of the other politicians were in bed with lobbyists.
It’s more than a little disappointing to see where we have come. And I’m not so blind as to think that it was just the ‘other party’. We ALL need to demand better from Washington.
PEACE.

To George Washington: You should check your facts before showing your ignorance.
John McCain has missed more votes in the Senate than any other senator!

50. Virginia Deb | 09.23.08
The permanent injuries sustained by John McCain while being tortured make it almost impossible for him to use a keyboard, raise his hands above his head or even put his hands behind his back.
His body may have been crippled by his service to our country, but his mind and spirit were honed by it.
Give this man your respect as well.

The more poignant question is I wonder if Obama knows how to get legislation through congress - not according to the facts which I know mean absolutely nothing to the trolls on the left.
Please spare us your banal tripe about the virtues of all that is Obama.
You might want to open your mind and start questioning why someone with his limited experience, his racists, communist, anti American relationships is even in the running at this stage. Look at how much he (and Dodd and Clinton) have received from Freddie and Fannie - $390K.
Add that to what he has taken from Viacom. He is a puppet in exactly the same manner Carter was. A know nothing, do nothing candidate with not one once of credibility to back up self supporting claims bolstering his assent to the throne.

“With a Dem Congress, he won’t be able to do too much harm.”
I might have agreed in another context, but not right now.
All we need is one more Scalia, and we’re going straight
back to the middle ages, and it’ll take 20 years to get out
of it. I’m not so sure that it’d be all that good for
the Country.
55. Demosthenes | 09.23.08
My god. We could have an open discourse about the most important issues of our times, proving the Founders belief that a well-informed citizenry is the key to a successful democracy. Or we could have this conversation. Airplanes? Email? Seriously? As a country we have 42 days to get our act together and start asking ourselves pointed, difficult questions about where we want our country to be in 4 years and what we are willing to sacrifice to get there. We need to be debating, heatedly and pointedly as needed, these questions, and we need to pose these hard questions to our candidates. Simply, as a nation, we do not have time for the kind of banality occurring on this forum.
56. TommyF | 09.23.08
I’ll help you since you can’t seem to think of any.
Obama’s ad about John McCain’s immigration policy tells a lie, insinuates a prejudice, makes a false link, and quotes someone badly. McCain has seemingly ALWAYS been on the side of immigration reform which benefits immigrants; has NEVER bad-mouthed Mexicans; is generally NOT a favorite of Rush Limbaugh. And Rush Limbaugh’s quotes were out-of-context… ANYONE could have said such remarks… but Rush’s were used to link John McCain to what appeared to be racial remarks (which they weren’t). Newsweek called this ad a “whopper.” Factcheck said it was just plain “false.” Basically, a lie.
Now, compare if you dare.
57. Robert Rowley | 09.23.08
As a citizen of Arizona I’m just soooo happy that John McCain is so obviously in touch with all of us normal, working class folk and so NOT an elitist. I mean just like everyone else, I often forget how many houses I haveand own 13 cars. Did he crash a few jets? Who cares, doesn’t everyone crash a few of their own personal jets at one time or another?

John McCain DOES know how to use a computer, but it is hard and painful for him to do it because of his war injuries. He gets around that by dictating to his wife who CAN type without pain. Jeez. It’s simply unbelievable how some people can mouth off untruths while being completely ignorant of the facts.
http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/is_mccain_unable_to_use_a_computer.html
There’s more important issues in this campaign other than if McCain can use a computer, BHO can fly a plane, or Biden’s word vomit produces another gaffe. Let’s try to focus on those issues (economy, gas prices, Iran, Russia, etc.) instead of this petty stuff.
Now, I just read the article again to be sure. Is this article about McCain or Biden?
60. Tim B | 09.23.08
Anything to overlook the fact that McCain has flip-flopped on every major policy issue in the GOP platform in the last 2 years. I seriously cannot believe that there are people here trying to nail him for not knowing about computers when he is on record repeatedly voting against limiting the CIA to the Army’s interrogation field manual. The man who was tortured for 5 years broke with his principles to run for office. This is exactly what Republicans beat Democrats over the head with every 4 years - “honor, dignity, principle” - and still the Dems can’t manage an effective counterattack. The two party system only works when both parties are competent. Instead we have one running amok creating destruction over the planet and the other is sitting in the corner picking its nose.

62. theNegotiator | 09.23.08
I think that it is unforgivably surreal if the information is true that Mccain doesn’t know how to use a computer. As far as “slinging mud” - NOBODY gets to the presidential race without having been completely submerged frequently in their own dirt. Running the company known as The USA is a vast and at least sometimes dirty undertaking. Think about this - how can Mccain be a “man of the people” if he doesn’t know how many houses he has (how many of you have that problem?) and doesn’t know how to use a computer? What else does he NOT know how to do that isn’t public? If the information is true then I think however morally indignant people get about it “getting out” it was a smart tactic on Obama’s part to put it out there. If it’s not true then of course Mccain has an opportunity to demonstrate that and discredit Obama’s campaign and validate all those hand-wringers that got morally indigant.
63. Jani Finland | 09.23.08
So Obama can use a computer and send out e-mails. This qualifies him to be President?
64. Shut Up!!! | 09.23.08
Basic computer knowledge a necessity to be President? Really? I don’t see that anywhere in our Constitution.
Sherman Smith…go to careerbuilder.com and put on your resume that you do not have any computer skills. Lets see how many job opportunities you come up with. You may get a few but definitely not an offer as a President, not even in the office. You be either filing the papers printed from a computer or cleaning the bathrooms.
Come on… in this day in age computers skills are need. My child learned to work the computer at 4. What was McSame doing all these year? Not working…maybe shopping for houses, cars, shoes…. I wish I had that luxury.
Sherman being that you typed this blog means you have more skills that McCain… shouldn’t you feel you next President should be more knowledgeable than you…that’s why you would choose them to be your leader.
Come think!

Wow. I really can’t believe you hateful dems out there take a moment of self-deprecating humor and run a man into the ground with it. I wouldn’t claim to know a lot about computers, but I can burn a CD and check my email.
As for the user who said Kennedy was a “Clinton Democrat?” Shame on you. Kennedy invented the modern era of the Democrat, and was ten times the president Clinton was (and had hotter mistresses).
Here it comes, I’m not a McCain fan. I’ll vote for him, but I don’t like his policies enough to be on board with him. That said, I’m definitely not an Obama supporter.
For all you McSamers out there, why don’t you check his voting record and press releases about how often he and George W agreed.
66. Hitobito | 09.23.08
John McCain should never have been allowed to fly a US Navy jet. He crashed three navy jets, was involved in the complete destruction of a fourth jet, and then was shot down over Hanoi. He was in bottom quartile in the US Navy’s screening tests but admitted because his father and grandfather were Navy Admirals! If you want to die, fly with John McCain. If you want to lose Social Security to privatization or see your 401k or IRA spiral downwards, vote for McCain. His complete economic plan for the US fits on a 3 x 5 notecard! Compare the McCain and Obama economic plans and decide for yourself! Warren Buffet, the founder of Berkshire Hathaway (share price on 9/22=$131,000 a share!) who knows something about investing has already endorsed Barack Obama. In 1962, if you bought 10 shares of Berkshire Hathaway for a total of $80 (eg $8 a share), those shares would be worth $1.31 million!

Sen. Biden and Sen. Kerry went to the same school of denial. Neither has a grasp of politics where the rubber meets the road..at the level of the American voter. How many more hapless remarks must we suffer from these bufoons before we realize “they” are the problem facing this nation?
It would be a good idea if they lined up Washington politicians two by two and marched them out of American politics and into the cesspools they originally crawed out of.

I wish everyone would lighten up a little! Do the research yourself, and make a decision based on your values. Stop buying in to all the BS. I’m concerned about the state of the union, healthcare, retirement, my kid’s future etc…………., not if McCain can e-mail. Frankly, computers are great, and I use them too, but step back and look at how much they run your life!
Go for a walk, and bring your kids and your dog!

The “Key” is which candidate can guide America through the current crises what with all the unrest in the world. Pakistan just changed leadership, Israel is about to do the same.
Time for all Americans to return to the LORD and set our pathes straight.
Which candidate has more potential for unifying America? Which has more potential for dividing us? However you vote, vote with your heart, not just one pet issue in mind.
God bless America, President George W. Bush and the US Marines
71. Martin | 09.23.08
There is a bunch of real dim-bulb’s on this forum.
First - John McCain was SHOT DOWN during air combat! He did not crash his plane!!!
Second - He flew a Fighter/Bomber - Which IS a JET aircraft!
Third - His injuries that were sustained as a POW during the Vietnam War/Conflict make it nearly impossible for him to use a keyboard or mouse. It is not his intellect or ability that keeps him from surfing the net or sending emails! So blaming him for his physical limitations that are a direct result of serving this country as a Patriot is ignorant!
So for all of you who are attacking the Man regarding his service to his country or his seemingly lack of ability. You are misinformed and seem to be lacking any compassion or true character. Any IDIOT can send an email, even you!
Whether you are for John McCain or Barrack Obama, you need to respect them as you yourself whish to be respected! Don’t attack them on this petty, incomplete and inaccurate misinformation. Instead, Why not express yourself with your superior intellect just because you can use a computer! This should be about debating their accomplishments, merits or their records.
72. Bob | 09.23.08
The higher up you go in the “food chain” the less you actually do you own computer work unless you are in the computer business. In fact, in government withthe freedom of information act there are very few governors and presidents that do any of their own correspondence.
Another point that people are missing is that if something hurts you do not engage in that activity. I am sure that everyone agrees to that idea. John McCain spent 5 years being tortured with almost every bone in his body broken-bayoneted, hung-up in a “chicken wing position (look this up if you don’t know what it is), etc.
Now for all of you so called human rights “open-minded” advocates out there-this is like asking someone who has endured extreme amount of pain in their legs or feet to be able to walk-well this has been something that we have been doing since the time of the caveman, isn’t it?
I guess that when Biden asked a Missouri State Senator to stand up and take a bow was not unusual-only this Senator was in a wheelchair-I don’t know why he didn’t stand up-we have been doing it for a long time.
73. jy2008 | 09.23.08
McMain could have crashed more than 5 jets if not prisoned for 5 years.
Obama will keep voting present if not selected.
You are what you are. Do not expect miracle change.
74. Al | 09.23.08
There are paraplegic people who know very well how to use a computer and do not make excuses or drama about it. If McCain wants to be the “Commander in Chief” in the 21st century I’m sure somebody will find him a way to make him learn how to use it. I’ve seen young soldiers coming back from this senseless war with the upper limbs blown away from IED’s, who have learned AGAIN to write on the keyboard by using a pencil in their mouth. McCain still has all his limbs. What else he isn’t able to do? Will he be able to pick up the “red phone” and dial Putin’s number to ask him not to launch, or will need his wife to do it for him? Or maibe will send Palin with a boat from Alaska since she is so close to Russia…
75. GDev | 09.23.08
Seems that all the computer literate people plugged into this string of communications know how to use a computer…but that doesn’t necessarily translate into being a true leader, smart, logical, nor informed. And by the way, since when does the internet and GOOGLE provide the truest information available? How about being on the ground and listening to people who know what’s happening instead of asking somebody who lives in their parent’s basement after age 30?
Almost without exception, “facts” laid out by many of those speaking herein are and have been demonstrated as just plain false, and/or merely part of the talking points of a particular party.
The “bashing” comments some of you make regarding the candidates, and particulary when bashing McCain it seems, reminds me of people who still say “show me the money”…you think you’re making a smart, even funny, insightful comment, but in reality, you’re acting like a parrot that repeats whatever ill-informed blurb your fed; your knowledge is as deep as a bumper sticker slogan, and you merely spew out talking points that have been put into your head by the media. You, in fact, are the out of touch individuals and are directed by the nose by the media.
76. Ed | 09.23.08
Maybe McCains inability to easily use a keyboard will spur the advancement of voice recognition software. Necessity is the mother of all invention.
This doesn’t fit into the liberal agenda which is government is the source of all money. Imagine how creative someone would have to be in this day and time to have the personal wealth McCain does without the abibity to email. Maybe the President does need to be able to send emails. You know, it is very difficult. It may take someone all of 30 seconds to learn.
You guys know how to email and I am happy for you. Now learn how to get by without creating debt and whining to the government that you were taken advantage of. Everyone knows if you have one dollar and spend two you are in debt. Greed is the single thing which created our economic situation. Obama does not have the ability to give you anything without having to pay for it.
77. CONs | 09.23.08
I actually hope the GOP wins. I want to the electorate to see the fruition of what happens when it elects people to govern who are deliberately hostile to government. I love seeing so-called conservatives bend over backwards to explain how creating a crushing national debt fulfills the conservative mandate. The conservative ideology is empty at its core and we will be left with just that…emptiness…and yes, the Democrats are spineless.
I also do not want Obama to be blamed for what is going to be a foregone conclusion- higher taxes. We will have MUCH higher taxes because of this bailout and I want the conservatives to be at the helm when this happens. There is no excuse to say we have no cash, but then all of a sudden 700 billion materializes out of nowhere with hardly a congressional hearing. This is ridiculous, people.
I also love it when people say they love “America” but hate “government.” What is “America” if it’s not the government? It makes no sense.
78. Doug | 09.23.08
John McCain does not know how to send an email because his arms were broken as a prisoner of war and it is now painful to use a keyboard. I think it is shamefull (and very telling) for the Obama campain to use a persons disabilities against them. And the fact that the ad never mentions this shows exactly who the mud slinger is.

Vote for Obama and you will have DESTROYED Hillary’s chance at becomingPresident!!
Obama has already destroyed Hillary’s chances for this time around. Hillary wasn’t willing to endure being the VP of such an inexperienced candidate!
Consider this:
If you elect Obama for 2008 , Hillary CAN’T RUN IN 2012!! The incumbent always runs for their party in reelection.
Hillary will then be 69 when she gets a chance to run as democrat. Then people will call her old(like they do McCain who is 72) and she will NEVER become President.
Reagan was 69 when he got elected but he wasn’t trying to break the glass ceiling at the same time.
So if you care at all about Hillary, you will VOTE AGAINST Obama this time around. Plus, you will break the glass ceiling and Hillary WILL BE THERE in 2012!!
Think about it!! It makes sense!!
If you support Hillary, YOU MUST VOTE AGAINST OBAMA!!!
84. Mike | 09.23.08
Although it may be bad to attack a person’s short comings, at least it is not an oout right lie like more than half of McCain’s ads. I think it is a shame that we are not talking about the Keating 5 and McCain’s age. The truth hurts I guess.

I understand that McCain can’t use a computer because of dexterity issues from war injuries….BUT…he can use a BlackBerry? Aren’t those button a heck of a lot smaller than my keyboard??? **shrug**
I just hated seeing the Obama camp finally sink to the GOP level but unfortunately the Republicans know how to win an election AT ALL COST and it’s hard to win against someone that plays dirty.

John McCain still suffers from injuries from Vietnam. He is a war hero. So, respectfully I ask him to retire from politics and enjoy his life. Leave governance to the younger physically fit people.
And Mr. Biden, learn to be a good wingman. This is not a time to call it as you see it. You can either be a Mahatma or be a politician. Take your pick.
89. Tim B | 09.23.08
Phil: “For all you McSamers out there, why don’t you check his voting record and press releases about how often he and George W agreed.”
The problem with checking his voting record is that it no longer reflects what he believes and what he says on a daily basis. Anyone siding with McCain based on his voting record is voting for a ghost. The maverick is no more, replaced with a body double who wants to make Bush’s damaging tax cuts permanent and who thinks waterboarding is A-OK. This isn’t campaign rhetoric, this is easily-provable fact that has caused many like myself who would have voted for McCain in 2000 to walk away from him in disgust.
90. Bill Dobbin | 09.23.08
All of you idiots who are on John McCain’s case about his inability to use email don’t have a clue why. He cannot use a computer because of war injuries from torture. He can’t even comb his own hair. You people couldn’t carry his lunch let alone his parachute.

funny, my father doesnt know how to type, but he hunt-and-pecks a a few words per minute, and he has learned how to use a computer…even stephen hawking, a quadraplegic, can use a computer! physical disability is no excuse to not do something, lack of knowledge doubly so.
92. please | 09.23.08
Funny, I support our fellow Americans with computer and networking support and just because you can ‘work’ MySpace - it means nothing when it comes to computers. Quite honestly, most Americans are stupid once you get away from email. Americans are out of touch with themselves let alone politics. Now don’t get me wrong, both Obama’s and Mccain’s plans are flawed but nobody seems to be asking that question? Political posturing is taking precedence over the people’s needs and desires. I’m proud to be USA but sincerely disappointed with the mindset of my fellow Americans.

And who says BIG money is behind the Republican Party?? all i see is the rich, teh ultra rich and the media supporting the Dems.
94. Virgil | 09.23.08
Well, at least no one can accuse McCain of sending government emails from his personal account…As a conservative I absolutely love Biden…best thing Obama could do! Biden is a Washington insider, the type Obama says he wants to get rid of while changing government, who has a reputation of “mis-speaking”. As a conservative, I doubted McCain at the beginning. It was not the selection of Palin that changed my mind, but the selection of Biden. If something were to happen to a President McCain, Palin would carry on his work. If something were to happen to a President Obama, God help us! Obama has compared himself to Lincoln, and I could not see it until he selected Biden, a man who could never carry on his dream (whether I agree with his dream is beside the point). Please, I beg the media, do what is right for this country; interview Biden more! McCain needs the help!
95. Jim R | 09.23.08
Johm McCain can’t use email. This is due to damage to his arms.
John McCain can’t listen to anti-american sermons for 20 years. This is due to the fact that John would rather die for his country then have is mocked.
John McCain can’t vote present 130-160 times.
Obama can’t remember anything from Jeremiah Wright’s sermons over the past 20 years. This is due to anti-american statements he might have to answer for.
Obama can’t be asked a real question by the media. This is due to the fact that the media knows the real Obama but doen’t want the rest of us to find out!
96. JakkaJackal | 09.23.08
It’s called voice to text software (and I’m willing to bet it’s tax deductible if you’re legally considered disabled)… being nearly completely paralyzed hasn’t stopped Hawkings. It’s McCain’s own fault for not researching how to overcome his disability to find a way to work within standard modern business practices. (****, he could even hire a stenographer!) Someone with so little forsight into how to complete their own day-to-day work does not indicate competant leadership.
97. Paul Bordieri | 09.23.08
Wake up people. The country needs help. Typing or flying jets are not the answers.
Can you imagine what a congress with a 90% disapproval is going to try and do with Paulson’s bail out program. As mr. Reid said, this is a new ball game he has never seen before. What do you think Pelosi and Frank are going to do? They had their heads in the sand for at least the last two years about this problem.
Bail out, Healthcare, War, Education, these are the problems stupid.
Years past have shown a three house democratic situation will only make these problems worse.
They don’t know how to clean up their mess and never will.
98. PjNedada | 09.23.08
John Nelson comments that presidents need not know how to fly a jet. They need not type either…
99. E | 09.23.08
I agree with #38 above, Pittsburgh Conservative. First of all let me say that I’m not over the hill hot for either of these candidates. Both are extremely weak and the product of the character assassination mentality of the leftist press. Nobody else, better qualified perhaps, wants to run for the job. Who can blame em?
John McCain cannot use a computer because his right arm was damned near torn off of his body when he was a POW in Hanoi. His shoulder is like my knees. Shot!! And I wouldn’t care if he could type or not. I’m not looking for an office clerk. I’m looking for a leader. McCain and Palin are the best of the choices now. Upon a closer look, Obama is neither a leader or qualified to run for anything, beyond his Ill. senate position. HE HAS NO EXPERIENCE LEADING ANYTHING EXCEPT A SOCIAL GROUP IN THE CHICAGO POLITICAL MACHINE!!
NONE!! N-O-N-E!! Speak well and arouse support?? Yes! Lead?? Not hardly. Where the beef??
Anyone who even considers him qualified for the White House, should have their voter registration card revoked and possibly lobotimized.
100. gettyleigh | 09.23.08
the guy has nerve damage in his arms and shoulders. typing is not something he can do. given that, he has always dictated his messages to a secretary; so it is more of a not having the need to sit in front of a computer, than the lack of knowing how. the guy sits on the interstate commerce committee; he is well aware of how I.T. works. he has his wife or someone else check his emails and dictates the reply so he can respond. I love it how people run their mouths without knowing the facts! Why do you think Biden called it a low blow? He and McCain have been friends for a long time; he would know.
101. DJS | 09.23.08
In reply to post 16:
McCain flew A4’s. They were attack aircraft, and in fact were certainly small jets, designed for aircraft carrier operations.
You may want to look at http://www.skyhawk.org/ to see what you are talking about.
102. Jill Again | 09.23.08
And I am supposed to think Brian Rogers comment about Chicago politics is any better? Give me a break. McCain’s camp comes out with the most outrageous statements daily, and has made more ads with more distortions than any campaign in history. There’s no moral high ground there.
103. jay rosenbauer | 09.23.08
gee kids this is all great reading. your thoughts and comments are so refreshing and original. democrats vs republicans. we wonder why our country is in the tolit. if our elected officials in washington cant agree on anything other than pay raises for themselves any better than we can agree who should be president then this country is doomed. i don’t care how far left or right you are, if this goverment dosn’t pull it’s head out of its butt and unite then we’re all in for a long hard ride, that is down hill fast.
104. FairQuestions | 09.23.08
To be fair to McCain - the primary reason given for his unfamiliarity with computers, emails and the internet is that typing is incredibly painful for him as a result of the torture he endured as a POW.
BOTH campaigns have descended too low in their ads. This race started out with two of the most admirable candidates we’ve had in recent memory - Obama and McCain are both thoughtful, decent, honorable men. Instead the campaigns now reflect the tragic reality of our vicious gutter politics. It’s we who are to blame for listening to the screaming heads on TV, for rewarding only those who exercise the most extreme partisanship and treating politics and every subtext of it as zero-sum. Shame on us. Every country gets the politicians it deserves.
105. rich | 09.23.08

I wonder if McCain does either, considering he crashed 5 of them.
107. Jill Again | 09.23.08
And to Jim R. - John McCain didn’t even bother to show up to vote “present”. Voting present is a parlimentary tactic. But you would have to know how a legislative body works to understand that, unless you were deliberately trying to distort facts. Which is it?
108. A Lincoln | 09.23.08
Presidents need not know how to “fly a jet” OR possess “basic computer knowledge.” Being President requires qualities like leadership, character, and patriotism, among others.
Being an empty suit does not qualify one to be President.
109. JHawke | 09.23.08
Well duh! There are voice activated keyboards. Physically challenged people use the computer all the time. Even some mentally challenged use the computer.
The ad was not intended to suggest that McCain couldn’t use the computer because he was physically or mentally challenged. Just that he isn’t up to speed on the way the world operates now.
110. Rick | 09.23.08
You liberal, NObama Koolaid drinking, idiots do nothing but show how ignorant you are on a daily basis. Have you not read, or even seen, that John McCain can’t raise his arms above his shoulders due to his captors abusing him and injuries suffered in Viet Nam? His fingers have minimal dexterity, kind of like your minds. I’m beginning to think that you people that criticize McCain don’t know how to use a computer, because if you did, you’d have seen sites like http://chicagoagainstobama.wordpress.com/ and you would have read about how much the people from Obama’s district in Chicago HATE HIM. You would have also read about his Muslim, oh, I mean Christian religeous beliefs. You would have seen B. Huessain Obama’s affiliation with Luis Farrakhan and how he believes that “… in order to make up for what white folk have done to black folk, we need to give them the WHOLE WORLD!!” That’s what your Messiah is looking to do, give the whole world to extremists and topple this great country. I will be standing on top of my house shouting ‘I told you so’ if His Evilness is elected and this Country that I have loved MY WHOLE LIFE is in ruins. Idiots.
111. The Last Hope | 09.23.08
Well the question you should ask yourself is are you better now than you were eight years ago?
Under a blue white house, the United States flourished with the largest surplus in recent history. The economy was strong and jobs were available and easy to be kept.
With Bush in office, we’re fighting a pointless war. The economy is crumbling and jobs are scarce and hard to keep.
Anyone who votes McCain wants more of the same.
I support the troops by bringing them back home.
And America should support the troops by voting for Barack Obama.
112. John | 09.23.08
If you look at the ad, no one is making fun of an impairment. That would be absolutely wrong and everyone knows it. If you inject that into the ad, then that is your problem. The fact of the matter is a man that is running for president of of the United States CANNOT use a computer because he never chose to learn those basic skills. In a day of text messaging, instant messaging, email etc, how much farther out of touch can you be? Computers are used for everything today. Why do we want our children to be computer literate but not our president? He can’t even relate to the young people in this country without having knowledge of a computer. This is not a man that will be for change of any kind. That is the point the ad is trying to make. Look at the real ad, not a portion of the ad.
113. Gail | 09.23.08
The ad on McCain not being able too use a computer is nothing compared to the ads that they have put out on Obama!!!For example the one saying he wants to teach sex education to kindergartners and having a perverted looking picture of Obama, when he just wants the children to learn about sexual predators.Or saying that his going too raise taxes when he is only going to raise taxes on anyone making $250,000 a year. Or comparing him to Brittany Spears, and Paris Hilton.Republicans need to quit being such babies!!!!If they can dish it out they had better quit crying and take it!!!

The last thing we need is a President who is sitting in front of his computer
screen all day surfing the web and writing stupid emails….like us. Who gives a hoot if McCain can’t email…the man has proven his political bone fides for decades in Congress….while Obama set a new record voting “present”
137 times in Ill. just so he doesn’t leave a track record. A vote for Obama is a vote for…..?
117. Sara | 09.23.08
We keep saying “enough”. Obama says “enough” and McCain says “enough”, but it seems that there is not really any change. What is going on here? Why can’t we just have rational discussions about the issues that are important to us? Do we really care so much about lipstick and email?
I encourage all of you to take 10 minutes today, look at each candidate’s website and see what they have to say for themselves.
Then watch the debates.
Stop the hemorrhage!
118. Lynn Garrison | 09.23.08
The real facts show that John McCain is up to speed on the Internet and other technical factors.
He does not use a computer because his hands were broken so badly, during his years as a prisoner of war, that he cannot use a keyboard.
To suggest that McCain is a computer illiterate, because of the fact that his hands were crushed and broken, is a slap at the millions of Americans who have physical disabilities. Being unable to use a keyboard does not make one a computer illiterate. As a fighter pilot he had to be literate in the use of computers and other technical devices.
Both Obama and Biden knew these facts, having served in the Senate with McCain. This makes the ad an even greatwer insult.
119. Xander | 09.23.08

We need more people like Cindy McCain.
121. Dick Kolklayshr | 09.23.08
If I am not mistaken, the A4 Skyhawk had several computers on it that were required to be used by the pilot to do the various tasks required to make the plane perform or supply information to the pilot. Granted, it was not Microsoft Windows and did not have a start button but to many of the commentators on this article that seems to be the extent of their computer skills. If the start menu was not there, even they would be stuck on not knowing how to navigate the computer. A black screen with a blinking cursor is still an accepted interface for many powerful operating systems or computers.
122. Richard P. | 09.23.08
If the Obama camp has bothered to do some research before airing another attack ad, they would have found that McCain’s unfamiliarity with computers is due to injuries he suffered being tortured while serving this country. Typing is painful. According to Forbes, McCain apparently is quite familiar with reading email- for which he can use a mouse- but must needs dictate emails to his wife.
You know what? As president, I’m sure they can find someone to take down dictation for him.
No, this is just another in a long and sleazy history of Obama attack ads… an Obama who claimed he was a “new kind of politician” but was the first to air attack ads and bring gutter Chicago politics into the national race. Kudos, Obama!

BTW how did this go from Biden slams his own campaign to McCain can’t send email? Biden probably should not have said this, but once he did he should stand by it. There is a lot of mudslinging, outright lies and a whole lot of flip-flopping coming from which campaign? Maybe both…

you dont see the big picture do you. the big economic boom of the clinton years was fueled by two factors. some guy named bill gates started a little computer revolution and this other guy ronald regan remember him started something call a 401k. thease two things collided and caused a huge economic boom. any one could have been president during the clinton era and come out looking like a hero. **** bill spent half his time trying define what a sexual relation was

Lynn Garrison. They’re not saying that he can’t use a computer because of his hands. They’re saying he can’t use a computer because he is not educated in regards to them. In this day and age where almost everything in this country is based off of the net and computers, having at least a fundamental understanding of it is necessary when dealing with things, including Wall Street. Wall Street is very technically advanced now. Everything is done using computers. So to not understand how to use email is a scary thought when you are in control of a country that is so heavily reliant on computers.
128. Myles | 09.23.08
I find it disgusting that there are Americans that make fun of John McCain because he doesn’t or can’t use a computer. The man is a hero in the truest sense of the word. he was a prisoner of war in North Viet Nam for 5 1/2 years. Think about what you say.

Sometimes… one has to wonder what is important to John McCain?
Apparently, he has never valued education or technology. We know he has never learned how to speak in public. Many high school students are better public speakers. Over the past few months, we have learned that he does not value truth, morality or principles.
All we really know today is that he likes to tell us war stories and hide the fact he dumped his first wife (after her accident) for one with plenty of money.
Let’s see.. he was against regulation before he was for regulation. He supported Bush before he was against Bush. He despised the agents of intolerance before he embraced the agents of intolerance. He found one of the most unqualified candidates in the entire GOP and added her to the ticket. Reagan was more coherent in his last year of office… need I go on here??
He wants to contribute to the destruction of healthcare as we know it.
McCain…. thanks, but no thanks!!
131. David | 09.23.08
With the financial crisis going on and Uncle Sam spending a Trillion dollars… where is Obama going to get the money for National health care… he’s not, the bank is empty… well more empty… Iraq is a non-issue, Obama has already changed his stand on that….
(both republican / Democrate)
So with all the money he’s raised, what has been promised… I don’t know about you but any time i “GIVE” money away, I “EXPCT” something in return.
The best thing about Palin, she is; outside of Hawaii; the farthest you can get from Washington DC.
Now for the approval ratings,, we are getting ready to trade a president with an approval rating of 25% (bad) for
a. 2 senators with 9% each (worse)… hum not a good deal.
or
b. 1 senator (9%) and a governor (85+) not great but much better.
132. Dave | 09.23.08
GET REAL.
Many people use computers by typing with just a few fingers, or even with devices made for those with disabilities.
The McCain camp is claiming he can’t physically use a computer - which is BS. That fact is that McCain doesn’t have the mental capabilities to use a computer.
He has even said that he is learning to “get online by myself” not too long ago.
If I had both hands amputated, I would still be able to find a way to use a computer. EVEN STEPHEN HAWKING USES A COMPUTER!
133. lch | 09.23.08
I can’t believe you people are arguing over someone being able to use a computer. I am sure Senator McCain would be able to us a computer for crying out loud. You have no idea how painful it may be for this man to type. You run for president if it makes you so smart.

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
Obama has finally stepped down into the mud - with ads like the one mentioned in this article and others like the immigration one. McCain has been in the mud for a bit longer - with ads that lie about Obama’s tax proposal and stuff like Obama supporting kindergarten sex-ed. So now they’re both in the mud pit and what little chance we had of an issues-based campaign is shot.
Why are they calling each other names and having hissy-fits about what the other says? The same reason any child does the same thing - they do it to get attention. And it’s working. Count the blog posts, the TV minutes, the newspaper space devoted to asinine stuff like lipstick, houses, cars, argula, etc. and compare it to the reporting on the candidates’ official (ie. not made up or mangled by their opponents’ PR org) proposals for taxes, foreign policy, energy, immigration, etc.
And why do these various media focus on the idiocy rather than the substance? First, it’s easier to report on “lipstick/pig” than it is to analyze proposed tax policies. Second - and probably more important - because WE (and I’m including myself here) click/watch/read the stuff.
So, how ’bout we start making a conscious effort to ignore the “noise” and pay attention to the “substance”? Maybe, with 45-ish days left, the media will get a ratings message and report what they really should.
Or maybe not.
136. Xander | 09.23.08

I also don’t think this is really an ad saying McCain cant use a computer. I think it’s more of a crack at him being outta touch with today’s world.
Come on people, it’s a metaphor.
And Republicians need to stop being such girly men. They attack Obama and just expect him to take it and cry “look how weak he is!” but when he fights back its “oh he’s no better than us!”
Grow some ball Reds. If you can dish it out, learn to take it.
Oh, and let’s get one more thing straight. McCain is a vet, so the f*** what. That doesn’t make him qualified to be president. We need Obama, we need a fresh face in Washington and we need a president other nations will be willing to work with.
McCain ain’t it.
143. Phil | 09.23.08
Ha! You people who keep comparing John McCain to Stephen Hawking are cracking me up! He invented the computer he uses, and is one of the most brilliant scientists in modern history. Comparing scientists and politicians (whether you think they’re brilliant or not) is like comparing apples to oranges.
144. Elliot | 09.23.08
McCain doesn’t need a computer to learn how to spend less than you make
he already understands that
just like that other non-computer user - Warren Buffett
145. Rob | 09.23.08
In this day and age, anyone who does not even know how to operate a computer should be automatically excluded from office. It is that simple. Would you elect someone who does not know how to use a phone? By this point, it is entirely equivalent.
146. Alex Gillis | 09.23.08
“Doesn’t use email etc because he has difficulty typing due to his war injuries. ”
This is the most shameful and unpatriotic remark I have ever heard before!
For most veteran life is not that easy, they do not have millions that let them decide what not to do because they have people who do it for them.
Today, McCain can use special keyboards that are adapted to his abilities; he can use voice recognition, and other techniques that are in use for many people who need to be functional in society to survive!
A poor veteran has to learn all this and keep fighting everyday to keep up in society, for McCain he is too busy using his vet background to avoid fighting and becoming functional.
The irony, McCain himself shows us what it means to be rich and what it means to be poor in this country. His party cuts founding to vet hospitals and actually equipment and technologies that would help reincorporate the wounded in war sooner into society, at the same time McCain has money enough to no to learn how to write an email.(btw neither received, so I guess he cannot read out of a screen neither listen to it with a text-to-voice software???).
Obama is not much better, at all, but please do not allow the republicans to keep insulting the real victims in this country: war veterans.
If Churchill would say about British aircraft: “Never, so few did so much for so many”
McCain and Bush administration should say about US Soldiers in Iraq and other wars “Never so many have been used so much for the benefit of so few and get nothing in return, not even the certainty that the war they fought was the right thing to do for this country”
147. Margaret Pace | 09.23.08
get real. How many CEO’s, big business owners and presidents send out their own emails? That is what secretaries and personal assistants have always been used for in the world of dictation.
Perhaps it would also help to know that one major reason for McCain’s alleged inability to use a computer is physical. For the record, his arms were broken while a POW for 6 years in Vietnam. Part of the torture he and his fellow soldiers endured was to be hung by the shoulders for hours on end. He cannot comfortably work in the common “computer position.”
148. derek | 09.23.08
Look, I am neither for obama or mccain but I do want my president to know how to use basic email for those times when either one cant be reached by phone or for times when the US mail is too slow. I truly believe that McCain, like my grandparents, grew up in a time where computers and staying connected to every aspect of our government wasnt as necessary as it is today… but think about it, today’s economy and society moves so fast that delays in communication can snowball and cost taxpayers money—BIG MONEY! I want my president, and everyone running my government to be able to use a computer!
150. Xander | 09.23.08
“he was a prisoner of war in North Viet Nam for 5 1/2 years. Think about what you say.”
I’m sorry, but that doesn’t make him fit for president. I respect the fact that he served his country. I respect the sacrifice he made for it. But I don’t respect the fact that after all of that, he is using Karl Rove tactics (who Rove himself said were a bit over the top) and attacking Obama with blatant lies. I respect the military McCain. I do not respect the political McCain. He has proven that he is willing to do anything it takes to win this election, even lie. He has 8 houses, 13 cars, and a corporate jet. There are tons of vets right now that have no home, living on the street, who can’t find a job. He doesn’t talk about them. You would think, given his service record, that he would care about today’s military men and women. And yet he wants to pick fights with Iran when our forces are already spread thin in Iraq (which we should have never been in in the first place), and Afghanistan (which we are losing on that front because we don’t have enough troops there (read “Iraq”)). I’m sorry, but being a POW doesn’t give you the right to hide behind that status on every issue of this presidency.
151. The Last Hope | 09.23.08
How long is the POW card going to work?
He’s outta of touch with our tech-heavy culture. Oh it’s cool, he was a POW.
He doesn’t work well with other nations. Oh it’s cool, he was a POW.
Our economy is failing. Oh it’s cool, he was a POW.
Our country is draining resources in a pointless war. Oh it’s cool, he was a POW.
Let’s all vote for McCain because he got captured and totured because that’s what we should vote on. Just like when we voted Bush, we voted for a president that “you could sit and have a beer with.”
152. ali | 09.23.08
Rick, thank you.
There is something I don’t understand, or may just have missed, on policy issues. I havn’t gotten an answer anywhere else. Maybe someone can help me. Welfare: Why do I have to get drug tested to earn the money, to pay the taxes that go to people on welfare who don’t need to be drug tested to get my money? And is there a limit on how long you can be on welfare? And if Obama wins, is he going to do anything to improve the areas that he said are “clinging to their guns and religion”?
153. Tom Philo | 09.23.08
Senator McCain could fly upsidedown, punch in a GPS coordinate, talk on the radio, coordinate with other planes and land at 135 MPH in the dark on a aircraft carrier and the ad states he cannot use e-mail? Ignorance is bliss, and the ad preys on the truth that he PHYSICALLY cannot use e-mail due to arm problems.
It seems that the ads are like a debate - leaving out all facts that goes against your side. I am sure they could make up all sorts of ads like this.
I knew a guy who was 83 and could not type with both hands - course he lost his right arm to a German 20mm shell while flying a B-17 over Europe so saying that he could not type with both hands was true - leaving out his missing arm in such an ad would also make him to be illiterate with computers. It pays to be a skeptic when watching / hearing any ad anywhere. It takes effort on the listener’s part to question all facts presented - but then the whole modern concept of ads is that the listener is too lazy to fact check anything and accept all as stated as a true fact.
McCain cannot use e-mail since he is PHYSICALLY incapable. This mean the all democrats should vote for him since they always say they support the disabled and should be given equal opportunity in life?

McCain can’t send an email because he is unable to use a mouse and keyboard because of his war injuries. This is a fact and it is why Biden originally thought the ad was terrible before he thought it was good. It has nothing to do with intelligence and I’d want a President that knows more than how to fly a plane or send an email anyway. I doubt any of these Lib losers even knows how an email gets from one computer to the other. It’s more than clicking send. And knwing how to send email sure doesn’t mean you can manage the computer infrastructure that runs Wall St
By the way Gail, Obama will raise taxes on people making less than $250,000. There is more than just payroll taxes dummy. One example is capital gains tax increases he is for. If you sell something like a stock or your house you will pay more taxes under NOBAMA and not everyone that sells something makes more than $250,000. Also, Obama wants to increase taxes on businesses. I’m sure your naive lib feelings tell you that’s a good thing but what do you think will happen when you raise taxes on every business in America? A business won’t just not react to an artificial increase in the cost to do business. They will make up the difference some how or some way. Usually by charging more for their products and services ( so everybody pays more for stuff) or by laying people off ( reducing jobs).

At least Biden has the guts to talk to the mainstream media. Schmidt is protecting his Pit Bull with lipstick after all this is their future. Now in the Debates Schmidt arranged it so she has only 90 seconds to answer questions - look for Schmidt and Rove sound bites in this debate instead of Palin dealing with the issues. Now the McCain camp says she not experienced enough to deal with Biden in a debate so 90 second answers are what they won for her.
Do we what a 90 second VP candidate with poll driven Schmit and Rove sound bites a heartbeat away from the Presidency? Palin and McCain haven’t met with the mainstream media for 40 days and counting.
Biden will make less mistakes in the next 40 days. Now Biden try to calm down we know you are very happy and honored to be on the ticket so stick to the issues.

While the current terrorist groups appear to prefer bombs, the next wave of terror is likely to be electronic–i.e., an attack on the computer systems we rely on for everything from stoplights to missle guidance, banking, and communication. A President that doesn’t understand computers is going to protect us how?

How we, as Americans, ended up with these yo-yos as the only viable contenders for the 2008 presidential race should make for some interesting history reading someday. Let Us Shine
It’s the drumbeat of the Liberals. It’s the drumbeat of the Conservatives. It is at the center where the balance of the two forces achieves equilibrium.
Progressives (Liberal) and Conservatives (Reactionary) are the two faces of the same coin. It is the mixture of the Progressive and the Conservative ideas that would prevail.
We are not just individuals (me only) as Conservatives indicate; we are also members of a social structure or community called humanity (Liberal). We are each others keepers, brothers, and sisters; we shine when we extend ourselves beyond ourselves. We are at our best when we allow liberal issues dictate our daily life.

The Constitution guarantees us a Republic. The talking heads in the corporate media love to prattle on about a Democracy and pretend that’s what we have. The truth is we have neither. We live in a carefully concealed Oligarchy.
McCain and Obama are both just sock puppets for the Oligarchy. Their job is to perpetuate the illusion that We The People still have any say in how this country is run. So actually, being the most believable liar is actually an important part of the job description.
It’s all just a sideshow, a distraction, bread and circus for the ignorant masses. Straight talk express? Yeah, right. Change we can believe in? Yeah, right. The only difference between McCain and Obama is their corporate sponsors.
No matter which of these clowns win, the oligarchs are going to screw us out of more of our rights, property, and money.

Actually, you can keep your christian roots to yourself. There’s a whole thing about Freedom of Religion, and sadly it seems like people have forgotten about that. Stop trying to mix religion and politics. It can only lead to disaster of “biblical proportions” (pun intended). Separation of Church and State is there for a reason.

to Sherman Smith, et al - your acceptance of McCain’s computer ignorance puts the US in Danger!
The Democratic ad wasn’t “terrible” because of WHATt it said, which was true, but HOW it said it, which was lame. In a world where the internet (invented by the military after all) is SO important to security, McCain’s self-professed ignorance is dangerous to America.
Ask yourself what the first thing Russia just did to Georgia during their recent attack - they took down Georgia’s internet to cut them off from the outside world, as they have done to the Baltic states in the very recent past. Any candidate HAS to know about this to be president now!
Unlike McCain’s ads which have been shown to be outright lies, this ad is true - McCain has repeatedly said he knows nothing about computers. The only trouble with the democratic ad was that it made light of this SERIOUS issue!

I have friends who are COMPLETELY PARALYZED from the neck down. They use a computer all day long. I have another LEGALLY BLIND friend who is a software engineer.
It’s not about ability — although his injuries are a factor. There are voice programs, alternate means of data entry, etc.
IF he wanted to, had the the initiative, was relevant to the modern world, he could have acquired the assistive technology to use a modern tool. But McCain hasn’t because he’s always had someone to do things like that for him. Therein lies the real issue — McCain is OUT OF TOUCH with the realities of modern life. He lives in a multimillion dollar gilded cage, and has no concept of what your life and my life is about.
And yet he has the unmitigated gall to paint Obama as an elitist.

Xander,
“Actually, you can keep your Christian roots to yourself”
Funny! Is that why you are on the Christian Science Monitor?
And in a contextual sense Religion is a contributing factor in our selection of our political leaders. It gives us a basis and understanding about those candidates belief’s, morals and judgment. Which are the characteristics we are looking at in determining who our leaders will be! This country and the Constitution was established by Christian’s and upon Christian principals. The moral fabric of the country has been shaped and hardened by the fire of adversity with an eye on Christianity. The separation of Church and State is so you have the freedom from religious persecution. Not that as a country we do not believe in God! The Constitution, The Bill of Rights, even our Currency is representative of religion – Christian Religion specifically. Look at any one of those mentioned and you will see things like “In GOD We Trust!”
I respect other religions and encourage people to follow their own faith. What ever that might be! But don’t delude yourself. This country was carved out and established primarily by Patriotic Christians. Certainly the founding fathers were devoutly religious – Christian Men. That is a historical fact!!!

Despicable at the lowest gutter level.”
And yet your precious Republicans have resorted to spreading lies and slanderous accusations that have been proven wrong, and yet they still use them. The Republican party has shown that it is willing to do anything it takes to win this election, even sell their soul. At least Obama has been using the truth (yes, stretched occasionally, but not blatant lies) in his attacks. McCain resorts to the dirtiest of tricks in the book.
“(How come Clinton didn’t have one on the desk?)”
Because he had to choose between a computer and a Monica. We all saw how that turned out ![]()

178 ED,
Have you ever used a Blackberry?
They are simpler to use because you use only your thumbs. Plus you can hold it in a more natural position.
Ergonomically it is easier to adapt to your own comfort and preferred posture. Not to mention (although slower) it does not require you to conform to a specified position for long durations.
One of the most common work-place injuries is carpel tunnel syndrome. Which is caused by the stress of using a keyboard!

“Separation of Church and State is there for a reason.”
There is separation of church and state. Don’t embarrass yourself and read the Constitution.
There is, however, separation of a state “church” - and that is EXACTLY the reason that there is no separation of God and state. God IS acknowledged in most all original papers, on our buildings, and in our practices (such as prayer before the opening of congress, etc.)
So stop embarrassing yourself by spewing liberal talking points and realize that even our laws are based on the 10 commandments. Or do you think “thou shalt not kill” and “thou shalt not steal” should be obsolete?
186. gander | 09.23.08
I meant to say that there is NOT separation of church and state in the Constitution.

“Actually, you can keep your christian roots to yourself. There’s a whole thing about Freedom of Religion, and sadly it seems like people have forgotten about that. Stop trying to mix religion and politics. It can only lead to disaster of “biblical proportions” (pun intended). Separation of Church and State is there for a reason.”
No thank you xander…I want a leader that believes as I do…so inherently politics and religion will be mixed….So I will keep my “roots” available to all..including you xander…80% of this country identifies itself as christian…so there is no getting around that this country is a CHRISTIAN country. And if we keep going away from our creator….this country is doomed to fail. I just wish we had a bolder leader available to choose from…
Thanks for the response xander!

In response to Xander in post 150:
I agree with you here…being a POW does not automatically make you fit for presidency…see my original post (166)…Don’t get me wrong I respect what he went through for this country and for you and me…but he is a POLITICIAN.
He has houses, cars, planes and……..agendas…
Mr Obama has little of anything to bring to the table except a new face…wow..
These guys are fighting for the brass ring….the job of the century and will tell you whatever you want to hear….

Enough with OH POOR McCain he was a prisoner of war 40 years ago!But he says no to the Vetrans Bill.Being a prisoner of war doesn’t qualify him to be president.By the way he forgets to mention he wreaked 5 planes when in Vietnam, and that he graduated #889 in Military School. Not very bright!!! I would rather have a intelligent President. And if someone wreaks 5 times he was asking to be captured. He uses a noun, verb, and POW!!!

George Washington,
Obviously you don’t know who we are talking about. So leave us alone. If you wish to comment on someone, at least you need to know who are you are talking about. You don’t. So please take your hatred and leave.

I personaly think john mCcaine can unify the country,at this state of terrorist threats and there are some out there, obama scares the **** out of me on the issue of good judgement and protecting the country. obama is shaky in decison making, no military experience,at this time with problems with IRAN and north korea, not to mention osama bin laden. we need and experienced hand at the wheel, and its not obama,my vote goes to MCCAINE.

Remember Steven Hawkins? If there is a will, there is a way. There are plenty software out there that assist disabled people to use computers. I just don’t think McCain tried beyond finding excuses to use computers and email. Excuses like, I don’t need to, I am too old, I am too busy, I am physically impaired.
Digital information is very important tool for research. The fact McCain does not know how to use computers makes me think how much independent research he had put behind his ideas. It’s dangerous not to do independent researches when you are in a sea of lobbied ideas.

What do you clowns think Presidents did before email and PCs? They used stenographers, secretaries, etc. etc. Do you actually think that no one can take shorthand anymore?
Your hatred for John McCain makes some of you people appear, frankly, irrational. Get a shrink will you? You will need it after the Obamanation loses in November. That guy should go back to being a community organizer. Maybe he can handle that.

Go to this website and see that Obama is already printing his own money!!
Didn’t he also change the insignia on his plane and also the Presidential seal? The nerve of that guy! Who does he think he is?

If he could use email, some low life dumbocrat would hack it and try to exploit it to their gain.
197. Melissa | 09.23.08
The ad was absolutely relevant and necessary, the nation must know that McCain wants to be President but does not know how to use a PC in spite of it being a 30 year old technology, yet his team claims that he invented the Blackberry. He has not shown any inclination or a desire to learn to use a computer, that tell me a lot about his aptitude and attitude. He confess that he does not know much about economics. Anything that is negative for him he jumps to that crutch of his: I was a POW. He has 7 houses - true but I was a POW. Enough already with the POW milking, he is like Guilani with his milking of 9/11.

idle hands are the devils workshop. unless of course you are using your computer to spend time on this blog. yes, a fine example of the usefullness of a computer. now shut if off and get back to work all of you.

I just read about a dozen of the comments and came away with the impression that many do not know that McCain cannot use email, and cannot navigate keyboards well, due to his war injuries.
I hear he does, indeed, surf internet sites and has a number of favorites.
I also hear his wife handles his personal email, her typing while he dictates. I would imagine someone on his staff does the same for his business emails.
200. Dan from Massachusetts | 09.23.08
At first I was proud of Joe Biden for denouncing that disgraceful ad but then he showed what he was made of. Not much. Doe anyone realize that John McCain can’t physically type? He had his arms pulled out of their sockets numerous times over a 5 year period as a POW. His wife types as he dictates his reponses to emails he receives. He can’t brush his own hair but Barack Obama can! Wow! I guess that’s a great reason to vote for Barack. I bet Barack would have begged to be let go early and the **** with the other POW’s.
I understand that Barack can send an email and I bet he can flush the toilet after he’s used it as well. His wife must be so proud! Here is my question: Can the man think? Has anyone heard Barack speak without a teleprompter? He’s a train wreck or vocally challenged at best. He makes George Bush sound eloquent. I know he was a community organizer so I guess that qualifies him to run for …city council. I would vote for him for city council but not president.
Does anyone really want to vote for a guy that is constantly apologizing for America? Really? This is a guy who hasn’t gotten specific on one proposal on what he would do as President. Why?
Barack says he’s going to keep manufacturing jobs here in the US. How? You can’t roll back time and stop globalization. John McCain has admitted that economics is not his strong point. Fine, appointment Mitt Romney and form a panel of self made business people to advise him. From what Barack says he can fix it all. He doesn’t say how and to anyone who asks him that makes that person a racist.
Well, that is my rant. Great blog Mr. Orr

O tempora! O mores!
Why, when there are complex, vital issues to be decided, do all candidates think they must entertain Patsy Public with sideshows? Why must we all be subjected to ads full of twaddle?
As it is now, if the four candidates were sitting at a bridge table, they’d all be the dummy no matter who got the bid. The parties did it again: gave the electorate the choice of the worst-qualified candidates to vote for, as they have done almost every election of my life–and I’ve been voting for a long time. “Oh, but he’s electable,” the Republicans sang of George Bush. “We want change,” sing the Johnny-one-note Democrats, “with health-care and welfare for all.”
Change from what, to what? No one ever seems to answer that except in airy-fairy generalities. If they assume we are all smart, the spin-makers bleat that they are boring the public, insulting them by stuff over their heads. If they assume we all are dumb as a rock, the whole electorate is entertained by their subsequent circus acts, and the spin makers laugh cynically because they have gotten by with it yet once more.
We are a lead pipe cinch to have another crummy government, no matter who wins, as we go into the polls with our eyes wide shut. But then, if they were open, we wouldn’t vote!

I can not believe what i am reading about senator McCain does not use a Computer and does not send E mails. That he would not make a good President. First off he will have some one to do the computer work for him. also do You Dem. think that something that is very Security will be sent over the computer. No it will not. If most of you Dem. have been in the Service or in a war Zone you would know that. From what i have Read i would Rather most of you not go in the Service and Specially not to a war zone. most of you could not be trusted. I was in Vietnam But i was not Captured , i don’t know for sure i could have taken the pain he got but i know one thing I could take lot moor pain then most of your DEM. ever could. Obama with his friends the Preacher,Ayers with the under ground and others I would say he would not last long before he he would start talking to the Enmeny. why do you think Russia and places like North Korea wants him to become President. They know he does a lot of talk but would do nothing. Also Iraq and AFGH. the Talban and the Terrist would love to see him as President he would pull the troops out as soon as he gets in.

Tsk Tsk George Washington and Sherman Smith!
George Washington- it is clear you have no original thoughts hence your choice of name. Secondly, the fact that you are really calling Obama, Osama is ridiculous. Did anyone else catch this???
You as well as others know his name but yet you choose to be extremely ignorant. It is an excellent thing for others that ignorance is not contagious.
Sherman Smith: “Barack Hussein Obama has none of these attributes. He’s never held a real job, has no command or decision making experience.”
Are you really serious about this comment? I guess being the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review is nothing. Oh yeah, and serving as Civil Rights attorney is not a real job. Being a Community Organizer and State Senator, i guess does not require one to make any real decisions.
So, just for clarification what is that you and George were saying again?-

At least Biden is talking with the press! Who are obviously desperate for stories, by what they are choosing to report on.
The press should cease coverage of the McCain campaign completely, until Palin emerges from her bunker.

These types of attacks are not helpful to the Democrats at all.
