McCain cancels Letterman. Letterman rips McCain
By Jimmy Orr | 09.25.08
It’s one thing to irritate your opponent. It’s another to irritate a newsperson. But when you irritate the guy who’s made a living out of making people laugh for more than 26 years, any criticism may pack more of a punch.
Don’t misunderestimate David Letterman. Letterman’s been on the air since 1982. While his show has always been a ratings success, numerous wannabees crashed and burned, badly. Magic Johnson’s “The Magic Hour” and “The Chevy Chase show” are just two examples of heinous late night Hindenburgs. It’s a tough gig.
So when John McCain cancelled on Letterman - at the last minute - you could hardly expect that the comic would take it easy on him. He didn’t.
Monologue
First, he replaced McCain with what some of the Republican’s campaign might consider the anti-Christ - Keith Olbermann. That was after, however, his opening monologue which was, for McCain supporters, brutal.
“Maybe you’ve heard the big news,” Letterman began. “John McCain, Senator John McCain, Republican candidate for President, was supposed to be on the program tonight. Were you aware of that? But he had to cancel the show because he’s suspending his campaign because the economy is exploding. You know who John McCain is… he’s the running mate of Sarah Palin.
“So John McCain calls up and says I’m not going to be there kids, because everything is going to hell,” he continued. “But the funny thing is that no one told his vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, and honest to God, right now she’s still circling the theater in a white minivan. She’s gonna pick him up later…”
Palin
Discussing the possible postponement of Friday’s debate, Letterman speculated that Barack Obama would have to debate Regis Philbin and had much fun at running mate Sarah Palin’s expense.
“She was at the General Assembly and someone said to her, “Oh, look over there. That’s the President of Georgia,” And she said, “Wow, Jimmy Carter.” And then she said, “Boy, I hope I get to meet Queen Latifah.”
Economy
Letterman got plenty of laughs from the usual targets - celebrities and current affairs. When discussing the shaky economy, Letterman said he wasn’t concerned.
“I’ve got all my money in second-hand FEMA trailers,” he said. “I’m not worried about the economy, I’ve got all my money in an alpaca ranch. I’ve got all my money in Rosie O’Donnell aftershave.”
A serious Dave?
But it wasn’t all laughs for Letterman. He wasn’t happy with the cancellation and it was apparent in his remarks. After all, the two go back. McCain has appeared on the Letterman show 12 times.
“So now I wonder if he’ll ever come back,” he said. “Do you think he’ll come back? A hero. An honest-to-God hero. An American hero. Maybe the only actual hero I know. I’ve met the man. I know the guy. So I’m more than a little disappointed by this behavior. ‘We’re suspending the campaign.’ Are we suspending it because there’s an economic crisis or because the poll numbers are sliding?”
Another twist
Letterman had yet another way to lampoon McCain when he found out that McCain was still in New York — not flying to Washington. In fact, McCain was talking to Katie Couric.
With the video feed of McCain and Couric displayed for all to see, Letterman quipped, “He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport, does he? Hey, John, I got a question! You need a ride to the airport?”
Sorry Dave
As for the McCain team, they apologized for the last-minute cancellation. On the Today Show, a McCain spokesperson said it “wasn’t a night for comedy.”
“We deeply regret offending Mr. Letterman, but our candidate’s priority at this moment is to focus on this crisis,” Nicolle Wallace said.
Top Ten
Of course it wouldn’t be a David Letterman show without a “Top Ten List.” And last night’s expectedly was aimed at John McCain.
The Top Ten Questions People are Asking The John McCain Campaign
10. “I just contributed to your campaign - how do I get a refund?
9. “It’s Sarah Palin - does this mean I’m pars’dent?”
8. “Can’t you solve this by selling some of your houses?”
7. “This is Clay Aiken. Is McCain single?”
6. “Do you still think the fundamentals of our economy are strong, Genius?”
5. “Are you doing all of this just to get out of going on Letterman?”
4. “What would Matlock do?”
3. “Hillary here - my schedule is free Friday night.”
2. “Is this just an excuse to catch up on napping?”
1. “This is President Bush - what’s all this trouble with the economy?”

Last thing that I am concerned right now is Letterman gets ******. John McCain did a right thing.
Senators need to do job that they were hire to do. They can’t just collect $160,000.00 in salaries and do nothing. This **** that if they need me they will call is not acceptable.
Senator Obama needs to get off his a** and go do his job, which he ignored for 1.5 years while still getting pay for it.
I don’t really care for talks and more talks how they will deal with economy. This financial meltdown is more important that debates, which can be postponed.
If you want to be a president you need to give 100% right now to the most important issue right now, I don’t buy this “chewing gum and walk at the same time”.
Do what’s more important for our country right now!
4. FairPlay | 09.25.08
wow Letterman is made bid deal. if he went he would have asked him why are you here instead of in D.C. didn’t matter what Mccain did he would have made a bid deal out of it.. Instead he had to find someone to replace him thats what made him made.
5. Dave | 09.25.08
O’bama is catching up. That’s it John, call time out when the other team is on a roll and you are losing. Having a little trouble multitasking lately old boy? That’s ok all us 60’s generation are entitled to a senior moment now and then. Just have Sarah make you a nice warm tea toddy.
6. Peter Blewett | 09.25.08
Can Mr. McCain handle a crisis and a campaign at the same time? Do presidents get to call “time-out” when the going gets tough?
8. Mary | 09.25.08
Dave was on fire!! Good for him for not rolling over for McCain’s BS. None of us should. I barely recognize the man who ran in 2000.
9. Job | 09.25.08
Typical liberal “demohacks…” and this guy not even funny – the only thing funny about letterman are his rabbit teeth and stupid heheeheek laugh. Get a life, letterman, you old liberal **** – how’s that for a laugh. Invite your crony Obamma-bin-Biden to your bandwagon parade… no more CBS Red Fox for sure!
10. t_golstch | 09.25.08
Last night, John McCain lost the presidency -he was displayed for the entire nation to see -once again disregarding any concept of reality.
“With the video feed of McCain and Couric displayed for all to see, Letterman quipped, “He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport, does he? Hey, John, I got a question! You need a ride to the airport?””
11. Robert R PS | 09.25.08
McCain was canceling Friday’s debate in the hopes he could use the Veep debate time slot so Palin would not have to face Biden. He was not honest with Letterman. He could have used the slot on Letterman to cement unity on the bailout, but knee-jerked his tactics again.
Stop with the Late Show bashing. If the show is so unwatchable, old and tired, why did McCain Announce His Candidacy on the show? Why was he going on it again last night?
12. sonja johnson | 09.25.08
I don’t understand why obama wants to debate so bad during this crisis situation. All he cares about his presidency. When obama calls for a fight with McCain like that I am really getting concerned. And I vote for Obama.
13. mark | 09.25.08
The only problem is, those who read the articles and see the shows and reports which expose the lies, devisiveness and failings of a potential McCain presidency run, are already against him, and those who are not either do not see these reports or brush them off as McCain and his team do. My biggest fear is that people will vote for the pretty face, or the man who makes it look like the press is wrong, because they are not being challenged in all of the press, or just because many will vote as they would for American Idol. Wake up America, this is our future you are deciding on, not who can make the best waffles for the kids.
14. George Palfi | 09.25.08
Just stupid on the part of Letterman. Nothing funny in any of his jokes. Jay Leno talks rings around him. Maybe Leno could take over his show.
15. Michael | 09.25.08
This is a pathetic attempt by McLame to take the focus off his failing campaign. Didn’t he just say “The fundamentals of our economy are strong” Maybe he can get Gramm and Fiorina to clean up the mess the Republicans made. Oh I forgot, Gramm was one of the major reasons this all happened, and McLame would probably make him Secretary of the Treasury if America is foolish enough to elect him.
16. Paul Wheeler | 09.25.08
Right. McCain mounts his white steed and rides off to Battle the Crisis.
As if an hour of his precious time would make a difference …
… It’s just another example of exceedingly bad judgment, that’s all.
17. Irvin Bielefeldt | 09.25.08
Why would anyone get upset about dissing David Letterman. He’s just a sanctimonious bag of pus and he was joined by the other sanctimonious bag of **** KO
18. mickey wilson | 09.25.08
Im wondering if David came up with all that stuff or was it his team of minions who write for him. I dont think he says one word from his own brain and its been that way for years. Unless of course hes bringing someone down.
I have never found him funny even in his earlier days and I personally think hes an angry man all the time.
If we were facing a worse disaster than the economics of the country would he still act like a fool. I think he would. After all, anything for a laugh at anyones expense. But notice Dave cant take it when its reversed by a guest…he rushes them off the chair very quickly.
Suck it up David…be a man. Try to enjoy our country and do something positive for a change…life is not all comedy and neither should you be.
Have a nice day !
19. Chan | 09.25.08
First of all, Letterman is an idiot… stupid too, in not understanding the situation of cancellation, McCain cancelled the major important one, the presidential debate, he is crying for his show, which he cannot capable of doing the show without any writers…
Secondly, as Philip as above mentioned, everyone in their life do what is more or most important to them… McCain feels and does that country is first by attending the session and he want to give his hours to resolve the crisis… Obama won’t care as he wasted his last 1.5 years and he is first time senator and he is not interested in anything other than becoming a president… he should understand this as simulation test for him when he becomes president on how to resolve this big national crisis, which is very important one…
Hope everyone takes good decision to resolve this crisis and US will be number 1 again…
20. sonja johnson | 09.25.08
so you suddenly realized a tv comedy show is that important for the country
21. chris matalas | 09.25.08
OK ,its comedy but the real gimmick and latest lie is that McCain initiated the suspension of the campaigns and that he in fact tried to ambush Obama by getting to the press first Obama infact called McCain to forward and propose the suspension. Obama wants to go on withe the debates. Lets face the facts Mccain can’t debate a quality high school team much less Barack. An old man who is rapidly reaching that stubborn cantankerous phase of his life.
22. Job | 09.25.08
McCain should send Palin to the debate. Beside Obamma’s worthy opponent is Palin at best. I have to doubt Palin is going to rip Obama apart. Heck he might calls himself Osama – he already admitted that he’s “a muslim”
23. Aaron | 09.25.08
I am sorry that McCain offended Letterman’s ego. In light of the importance of this economic bill McCain thought it was a bit more important to stay on serious issues than just have fun on Letterman. Gee, too bad he’s got priorities and a job to do.
What stupid comments from Letterman. First saying “what will he do if he’s President, suspend it too”. He just put his job of being a Senator first over running for President. What about that tells you he will do that when President. He did that inspite of politican gain. Delaying the debate only hurts McCain becuase foreign affairs and security is his strong points.
McCain is leading by example. Sure he can Multitask Obama. But sometimes you must lead by example, and suspending his campaign inspite of political gain is leading by example.
24. Joseph | 09.25.08
Remember people if we don’t pay attention, this time is the whole country that is going to go down and not a lone maverick.
25. Richard | 09.25.08
McCain is showing leadership by going back to work in Congress where he is needed. Obama is just playing politics and doesn’t give a damn about the country. McCain has sealed my vote with this move showing true responsibility. Obama has lost my vote by putting himself ahead of the country.
26. David K. | 09.25.08
I’m sorry, but that doesn’t fit the facts, Phillip and Chan. So far McCain has missed 64.1% of the votes in this Congress compared to Obama’s 45.9%.
I’ll agree that it should be required that a politician running for a different position in the government should not be currently serving. But you just argued for the wrong guy because of your logic. Nice.
27. Rick Hamilton | 09.25.08
Dave, McCain did the right thing…..with the collateral affect of saving your sorry *** investments! Anyway….what’s the difference. You slam him when he doesn’t show or you slam him when he does. His time would be better spent doing just about anything else. You think you and your left wing waco friends in the press are going to convince Americans to elect Obama and turn this country into a socialist state. Well, fortunately, this election will be decided (again) in places like Ohio where I live, not on late night TV. ![]()
28. Sara | 09.25.08
Phillip
What do you think McCain and Obama could do about financial crisis now? They are not in the office, they can only vote and that is it.
It is more important for McCain to stop hiding, get out of the cave and face Obama on all the issues at the debate. He can say what his plans would be there, if he would have any.
But he chooses to lie and hide because he is a scared student before a major exam. He knows he has no clue about economy or foreign policy, so he got one of those panic attacks that you get when you are about to be revealed as a moron in economy while Obama leads the polls.
29. thoren58 | 09.25.08
They would have campaigned with an emphasis on experience and fiscal responsibility. Given the current economic news, that choice might have been a winner. McCain might have won if he had picked Romney. After only a couple of weeks, his choice of Palin makes McCain look stupid. She’s a loser. Most significantly, McCain reached out to the social conservative “base” with the Palin pick rather than the fiscal conservative “base” with a Romney pick. That was a mistake for McCain, the Republican Party, and our country. Even if McCain/Romney hadn’t won, they would have re-galvanized the role of the Republican Party as fiscally responsible. Our country needs that message and it would help everyone a lot more than the family values garbage, which people like Palin peddle but seem to inevitably fail to live up to even in their personal lives. McCain/Palin: The Bridge to Nowhere
30. rleb Blco | 09.25.08
For people that OLD, it’s impossible to handle impotent issues and important ones, at the same time, at least it is what generally is showing Mc cain. McCain is showing his age, too many ‘gimmicks’ the worst being Palin.
31. John | 09.25.08
Good thing Letterman does his rouine in person.
The text by itself just seems out of touch - kind of like making fun of a fireman taking his personal time to go help in an emeregency. I think this would be true whether it was or Obama or McCain he was making fun of.
Personally, I would like to see Mr Letterman be President so he could get the same treatment. Now that WOULD be funny.
32. Cody | 09.25.08
Seems to me that a few of the commenters missed the bit about McCain talking with Couric. That doesn’t exactly seem like the best way to handle this “crisis”.
33. anotherslep | 09.25.08
Wow, like you’re really gonna care what David Letterman says and thats going to decide how you vote?
Letterman has been a classic lib his whole life and just like all the other left leaning weenies he practices “do as I say not as I do”
Anyone who would let a latenight talkshow host influence their vote should do the country a favor and stay home on election day!
35. D | 09.25.08
McCain is not ready to debate. Let’s face it. There have been more than a few important issues these senator’s have missed while campaigning for the last (what seems like) 14 years. McCain is going to get slaughtered in a debate so good luck John. You can’t run forever.
36. Paul | 09.25.08
If not for the news coverage would anybody “really” know what happens on the Letterman show?
37. Sara | 09.25.08
Aaron
And why didn’t he say so? Letterman would understand, he is a patriot. But McCain lied to Letterman, that showes he has a weak character and that he is senile.
38. G MAn | 09.25.08
The issue is not dave letterman, the issue is that McCain lies for CONVENIENCE - not even necessity. He could have told Letterman the truth, but he didn’t have the courage to say “hey, a serious news show is more important right now.” Instead he LIED to Letterman.
Keep making excuses for him folks, your true morals are showing.
39. Larry Bud Melman | 09.25.08
Did David get his feewings hurt?
Sounds like a brat tantrum. Letterman knew McCain would have raised his Nielsen ratings significantly, and we all know Nielsen ratings are far more important than anything else a candidate for U.S. President could possibly be doing.
Doesn’t hurt McCain at all. What DOES hurt McCain is postponing a presidential debate.
40. stewart orvik | 09.25.08
Were I McCain I’d do the same thing. Why would one submit themselves to the **** that all the late night “stars” have resorted to. Lets have at least the semblance of fairness here. Why not a few jokes about Obama’s relationship with Ayers, the “bomber”? Do you think there aren’t a few laughs there? How about Chicago politics in general? Are there not numerous jokes to be derived from that venue? What of the half-brother George, I could write a dozen jokes about that situation myself. It goes on and on but no, these “parrots” of the Obama line even stoop so low as to ridicule Sarah Palins seventeen year old daughter. as I recall they had nothing to say, for instance on the beauty, or not, of Chelsea Clinton, or Amy Cater. I say you can stick all these “comics” in Johnny Carson’s jock strap and still have room for Ed McMahons “walk in bathtub”.
42. y2 | 09.25.08
Ok, listen everyone. GO to google and type The Birk Plan. Read it and ask yourself why in the H*** would they not agree to this. It makes a lot of sense all of the things I have heard from from congress is senseless.
Peace
PS: Ask yourself this question. Would you want your president to be in smart and at the top of his class while in school. I’m just asking.
43. T | 09.25.08
Fair play????? Youre an idiot. Learn how to spell “”MAD”" Not MADE. and learn how to spell “”BIG”" Not BID. And youre voting Republican!!!!! HAHHAHAHAHHA. THAT’S SCARY!!!! Its people like you who are worse than Republicans.
44. Dave | 09.25.08
What a world we live in where a talk show host’s ego is so out of control that he criticizes a policy maker who prioritized a national crisis ahead of being a guest on a late night comedy talk show. News flash to Dave Letterman, “The World Doesn’t Revolve Around You.” Over the years I’ve liked Dave, but he has grossly mis-stepped by throwing McCain under the bus for cancelling a show in order to attend to his duties as a U.S. Senator. If I were McCain I would never talk to Dave’s booking agent again and would schedule on other networks just to drive Dave’s ratings lower. Dave’s ego has mis-served him and, more devestatingly, has revealed to America his shallow, self-serving character. From this point forward I’ll never watch Dave’s vacuous, sarcastic smirk again.
45. Roy | 09.25.08
Seems to me there are a lot of McCain supporters on here who are a little upset. Its your own fault, you stupid people. Most people McCain’s age are either retired of in assisted living, and you want to give this idiot the most important job going? You would think over the last 8 years under George Bush that people would have gotten a little bit smarter with who they have as president. I think someone of you just ate waaay too many lead based paint chips as children.
47. y2 | 09.25.08
I am so angry at congress I can’t even write a sentence correctly. We need limits on congress, supreme court and everything else. This is a country for the people by the people but right now. We are getting caught with the old bananna in the tail pipe.
CONGRESSMAN AND WOMAN YOUR JOBS ARE ON THE LINE. YOU BETTER VOTE NO TO THIS PLAN. BUSH IS A DIASTER….AND CHANEY IS NO BETTER…I CAN’T TAKE ANOTHER 4…8 IS ENOUGH..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
48. Rickler | 09.25.08
By his own admission, McCain doesn’t know much about the economy. Why then does he need to suspend his campaign to personally go help those who do know, fix it? Answer: he doesn’t. At best he’ll just get in the way. Let those who know something about the economy deal with it.
He should be focused on the presidential campaign since that is an extremely important decision people are going to have to make very soon. I don’t care if he is currently getting paid a congressional salary - the campaign has to be job #1 right now. Do all the debates. Let the public get deeper into who these two candidates are so we can make a wise choice!
49. Rhi | 09.25.08
Really you guys?
“McCain is showing leadership by going back to work in Congress where he is needed.”
I guess Katie Couric is a member of congress now? McCain isn’t trying to fix anything. The economy was “strong” not too long ago…right? I agree with Letterman, if it is so important that he must step away from his campaign then he should let his running mate take over. That is what she is there for right? There are plenty of qualified people in congress who can handle what is happening.
And for Obama, get your facts straight people, at least learn to spell the man’s name right!!
50. J-Tyme | 09.25.08
Job,
Your scare tactics aren’t going to work this time around. Speak with some substance.
You know this is McCain’s way of getting Palin out of the debates.
All American just want to see if these her and McCain have any substance. We’re not going to get that if they dodge the media at every turn. Informed decisions come from more information, not less. Make that good information, not false information spread through the internet.
51. Undecided Still | 09.25.08
Until now, Barack has refused to debate, since June. Now his campaign is ready. Is this perhaps political? As for “being around” for important issues, during the primaries Hillary was consistently returning to Washington, D.C. to cast votes in the Senate, because that was her job. She’s a Senator. I believe Mr. Obama has a record of not being around for votes — or if he’s there, he votes “present.” We need more than someone who’s present. We need someone who’s present and accountable. Why is every problem Obama has, someone else’s fault? Name me one time he’s admitted an error of his own in recent history. Or indicated perhaps he needs to change, given that change is his mantra?
52. Meghan | 09.25.08
What is important here is perception. Letterman is pointing out inconsistencies.
If there was a legitimate reason for canceling, it certainly looks bad to then be on with Katy Couric. It seems disingenuous. And since perception IS politics these days, this can ultimately hurt the McCain campaign.
Additionally, while I understand the rationale in skipping the debate and the talk show, many people might take that to mean McCain is doing the opposite of what he claims - it may look like he is running from the problem or re-grouping too frequently.
Think about what newscasters might say if it were Obama saying the same things. The public wants to know the candidates thoughts and ideas about how they will work to fix this crisis.
And while it is admirable to want to be in Congress working today, what will happen 40 days from now? People need to know what you stand for. That’s what debates used to be about, anyway.
53. Banobo | 09.25.08
McCain’s campaign has been nothing but a series of stunts…this is just another one. It is pure Rove style politics of distraction. As a thinking American citizen, I am offended.
54. Hans Giersberg | 09.25.08
McCain looks like a panicked man, running around all bug eyed and flapping his arms, yelling “don’t worry, I’m rushing back to Washington to fix this mess.” This from a man who once said “I don’t know much about the economy”. Sounds to me like he’s grandstanding, or panicked about the debate, or both. The negotiators working on the bailout are busy right now, John, so maybe now’s not the time to go there and distract them, just so you can get your picture taken. And besides, aren’t you part of the cause for the mess we’re in. All that deregulation you and your fellow Repubs forced on the country. How are you qualified to do anything other than make things worse. We have a real national crisis here, John, and you try to turn it into another of your goofy political stunts. If this weren’t so serious, I’d have a good laugh at your antics. But this is no laughing matter, and your help is the last thing they need in Washington. So calm down, take a pill, and go to the debates like a good little boy.
McCain as president - based on his performance lately, that’s a real scary thought.
55. ForBetterSociety | 09.25.08
it’s ok if media is accused of being democrat-baised, it’s OK if letterman is some *** that some people claims him to be, it’s even understandable that he MAY have a valid reasong for suspending his campaign, whats NOT ok is mccain has no honour, why would u LIE to letterman about cancelling the appearance cuz u need to go to washington immediately, when ur CLEARLY going to the next studio and filming an interview with the media which u claim to be dem-biased? it’s not about left or right bis anymore people, it’s about the basic need for a president to be honourable and NOT lie to its people! whats next? when the country’s in deep sh** again is president mcCain gonna cancel a press conference cuz he’s gonna “rush back” to washington and we’re supposed to believe that?
56. Arne Saknusemn | 09.25.08
This is a moderated forum by someone against McCain. Certain messages get deleted.
Yes, Obama is muslim. Why would you delete this message?
58. meb | 09.25.08
I think McCain’s base is getting smaller and smaller, and it seems like it may be getting dumber and dumber as the spelling and grammar of his defenders gets worse. It’s not a big deal on blogs normally, but it does seem to be a trend.

McCain has the highest absentee record in the senate and hasn’t case a vote since April 18th. Suddenly, he as to drop everything and go to Washington to deal with the economic crisis that is of paramount importance but he hasn’t even take the time to read Paulson’s 2 page plan?? The guy just doesnt’ make any sense.

For those who are angry at putting up $700 bil of taxpayers money, they are
just following the Democratic talking points. See: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122230704116773989.html The treasury stands to MAKE $2 TRILLION.

63. steve | 09.25.08
The latest:
McCain lies to Letterman about suspending the show.
Letterman catches him in a lie by video taping his live appearance on CBS Katie
After McCain was caught in his lie, he comes out and says that it was suspended because comedy was not appropriate for the economic crisis.
OOPS! he didn’t think he would be caught in his lie by Letterman..so he had to lie again to cover up his first lie.
Why didn’t McCain tell Letterman the truth from the beginning….man, he is a liar big time.
If McCain becomes President it is a Presidency of deceit, lies, distortion….sound familiar….BUSH!
Thanks Dave Letterman, we need some comedy relief during this time…but in this case, comedy was more honest than McCain slogans will ever be.
64. j Siler | 09.25.08
SEND HER/SEND/HER!!John should stay and debate so we can understand why he copped out on Letterman. He should send the lady he chose as a potential American President to go to Washington and fix this mess up. That way, we could also understand how she would take charge and deal with a major international crisis. She should get along well with the the man who made the mess in the first place and his own brilliant choice for V.P.
65. John | 09.25.08
I didn’t see the show, but based on reading this article, it sounds like it was very funny. I’ll need to look up last night’s show on cbs.com. Kudos to Letterman for calling out the BS. He pretends he want’s to suspend everything, to take care of business in Washington, but was actually still interviewing with Couric in NYC … BUSTED!
66. Dave | 09.25.08
This “crisis” has been a long time coming and has been caused by BI-PARTISAN poor management and greed. It won’t be solved by money in several days, or even several weeks. The Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 was enacted to prevent another “depression” like what we are headed for now. The first attack on this act was in 1980 the second was in 1999. Just look it up on wikipedia and READ it. Or to the to government’s site and read it there. Then look how the stability of the stock market stopped after 1980. McCain is just using Fear, uncertainty and doubt to further his agenda. Does he think that the average American will believe he is he going to unilaterally save the US from certain ruin with his god-like presence in Washington DC?
The “Paulsons” of wall street are trying to get as much as they can before the recession hits, and it has already started. It’s not the end of the world, its just the end of the road for greedy executives - maybe. Give that 700 billion to people ready to lose their houses because they were hoodwinked by wall street’s minions. Let the rich stand in welfare lines for a change.
67. Sara | 09.25.08
Obama is still going to Washington tomorrow before the debate, but he just doesn’t feel it’s necessary to suspend a campaign or cancel an important debate. It’s ridiculous to think a campaign can be suspended, the candidates actions will be closely scrutinized by the media whether or not their campaign is active. The more sensible approach would have been to cancel scheduled events, but McCain took it too far by suspending his campaign. It’s silly season again.
68. Robert | 09.25.08
The anti-Letterman commenters don’t get it.
#1. McCain personally told Letterman he had to go to Washington DC to work on the crisis.
#2. McCain really was doing an interview with Katie Couric at the SAME time the Letterman show was being taped. He clearly didn’t need to go to DC right away.
#3. McCain the next day gives a speech at the Clinton Global Initiative Conference. He clearly has enough room in his schedule to avoid working with the congressmen actually working on the bailout plan.
So 2 lies: He didn’t need to be in DC and he didn’t need to concentrate on the bailout.
69. T | 09.25.08
LMAOOOOO @ JON JEE I DIDNT KNOW THAT ABOUT CLAY!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAH NOT. True our Candidate choices are not the best. But Obama over MR McCain.
ANYDAY. How many HARVARD Grads dislike Obama?
70. EatME | 09.25.08
Letterman needs to go into retirement. He’s no longer funny, hasn’t been for YEARS, and now he’s just turned into a bitchy little partisan HACK!
Way to go Dave - you just lost half of your audience….lol lol
72. geek | 09.25.08
What are you people talking about? McCain deciding to put the country first and fly back to washington?
THE POINT IS HE DIDN’T GO! HE was getting his makeup done instead!
73. Spencer Stromberg | 09.25.08
The issue is not that Letterman was mad. There are two issues: 1) John McCain (and Obama for that matter) has no seat at the table in negotiating this bill, and he knows it - he is not on the Senate Banking Committee that is working on the bill; 2) he, or his campaign, lied to Letterman’s staff about going straight to Washington - he wanted to go on the CBS Evening News instead.
He is not being honest with anyone in this campaign and this story about going to Washington to help hammer out the bailout is just grandstanding.
74. roger lehnert | 09.25.08
i could understand mccain wanting and trying to orchestrate missing the debate. he really does not have all that much to say about the economy after having been a proponent of deregulation and owning seven houses plus thinking the middle class must make over a million. but to miss letterman. if judgement is a benchmark for being the president of the united states he should have been on letterman. couric? pailin thinks that name is the president of bosnia. roger
76. Mahen Gunasekera | 09.25.08
McCain could have easily done at least a video conference over the Internet with Letterman. Hey, then again he doest know how to use a computer!
I think calling off critical appointments is a sure sign of panic under pressure.
I don’t want someone like this as the Commander in Chief.
77. butler | 09.25.08
Lets cancel the debate, and if the economy isn’t reason enough, we’ll find a new reason next week. **** why even have a debate at all, not like American’s need to see the Pres. OR VP debate i mean we’ve done ok never hearing sarah palin’s voice in an unscripted interview right?
and by the way the american public has alredy made up its mind and will vote by party lines regardless of the hack that is in the debate chair RIGHT?
There will always be reasons to postpone telling the public ANYTHING, why have facts when you can just tell them who to vote for.
78. Justin | 09.25.08
I didn’t realize Katie Couric was part of the bail-out negotiations. Why was he with Couric when he said he needed to be back in Washington right away? McCain is losing his mind! During the primaries, I was okay with 3 candidates becoming president - Hillary, Obama or McCain. But after the last month of McCain’s campaing, this guy doesn’t deserve to be in the White House.
79. RC | 09.25.08
Wow McCain’s really dodging bullets left and right. Ditching one interview to go to another, hiding VP from the media, avoiding the debate and uspending his campaign in the name of national crisis even when they’re already reaching a bipartisan agreement about the bailout in the Congress… is he still running?
81. Glen | 09.25.08
This close to the election there is no such thing as suspending the campaign. Every move either candidtae makes is reported analyzed and comented on. He appeared with Katie Couric in NY , got his face time anyway. Sounds like a good campaign strategy to me. As far as getting down to buisness I’m certain the Senate can get by without McCain’s supervision they have been doing so for a long time now.
82. roy | 09.25.08
Actually canceling the debate is more important than canceling Letterman but my response for both actions would be the same. A debate or Letterman can always be rescheduled but this financial crisis is a thousand times more important. Real money is at stake so let us get our priorities straight. Although Obama maybe a good President, in the Senate McCain is proven to be someone that can pull Republicans together and work with Democrats so it is important to have him there. It is not a issue of multi-tasking I would rather have all Congress 100% focus on this financial crisis, of which I think the Democrat’s proposals are better.
83. geek | 09.25.08
but he didn’t ride off to washington to save the day…
he was getting his makeup done!
84. Steve | 09.25.08
This move by McCain is nothing but a callous, dishonest trick. He knows nothing about economics and is not even capable of contributing to the discussion. The latest ploy for attention is hardly a suspension of his campaign. It is a dishonest method of campaigning.
Prior to the campaign I had a reasonably good opinion of McCain. He was one of the Republicans who occasionally would buck the conservative right wing elites and help the Democrats pass legislation that had potential to help the average American. I never really liked his self praising “hero” bit in which he would have us believe that being a victim of the Vietnam war (which he was) plus a perpetrator of the killing in that war (which he also was) is equivalent to being a “hero”. Senator Kerry actually was much more a real hero, in my book, because he led successful dangerous missions. He was even more a hero when he later opposed the war. But all of that is neither here nor there. The disturbing thing now is that John McCain is running the most dishonest presidential campaign on record. It seems he will say anything or do anything to get attention. It frightens me to think that this guy could actually win. Anyone who hopes to hang on to health benefits (any that might be left after the Bush years) or to a chance for good housing and decent retirement would be wise to reject McCain and support Obama.
Truman said “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” I would say to McCain, if you can’t contribute to the discussions about the economy and have enough energy and brainpower left over to do the debate with Obama, you shouldn’t be President and you really shouldn’t even still be a Senator.
85. Kevin | 09.25.08
A maverick by definition is an unbranded range animal. Well, John McCain chose yesterday to finally brand himself once and for all; with a coward’s stripe. I expect him to crawl out of some kind of spider hole the day before the election looking a beaten and bedragled Sadaam Hussein, expecting a bamboozled electorate to “vote for me!” When a once-proud true hero, formerly revered for “straight talk” crashes and burns so publicly as this it’s not pretty. It’s a Greek tragedy turned to farce!
86. VH | 09.25.08
I don’t understand how people can be SO supportive of McCain after his being so flippant on this debate. Why does he need to postpone the debate? John McCain is not the president. In a month we are going to be putting one of these guys in the white house for 4 to 8 years. In a race that is this close this debate is VERY significant. What’s more important in terms of McCain, is for John McCain to tell us on Friday why he feels that he’s more qualified than Obama to fix this economy over the next 4-8 years.
88. L PHILLIPS | 09.25.08
Please answer me this…Who cares what David Letterman has to say about anything. McCain is doing the right thing, this mess that the liberals started is far more important than a talk show or a debate on foreign policy. The great Obama’s answer to the problem is “Call me if you need me, I’ll be there”. What a leader he will be……
89. James | 09.25.08
Ignoring whether or not Letterman is funny (I personally think he is - and that humor can cut to the heart of truth when written effectively), the point is McCain lied about something trivial (his reason for not be able to attend the show). I don’t have a problem with him not showing up, but if you are prepared to lie about the little things won’t you lie about the big things? Isn’t lying a problem we’ve had for the past 8 years?
I think it is also worth noting that Letterman is probably a fan of McCain and that his anger wasn’t because McCain didn’t show up causing some last minute scrambling (something Letterman has had to deal with many times in his long career) but rather that he was lied to by someone he respects.
I simply don’t believe McCain’s actions in the past 24 hours are motivated by anything but political posturing. And I should note that I voted Republican in the past two elections, was in the McCain camp early on, and have switched to Obama and am now a registered Democrat out of complete disgust with where the Republican Party - including John McCain - have taken and are taking this country.
91. L PHILLIPS | 09.25.08
Gosh, the more I read from people who think McCain is wrong, the more the saying “stupid people shouldn’t be allowed to vote” becomes more valid. What in the world does a debate on foreign policy have do with our econmic problems. This probem can’t wait, but a meaningless debate surely can wait for a couple of days. And if you don’t think McCain is showing true leadership, I just feel sorry for you……
92. al | 09.25.08
Hey McCain will have to multi-task as president so don’t give me this **** about him doing whats right. How is talking to Katie Couric resolving anything. Republicans you should be a little ticked at some of McCains gimmicks. I know you want to support your party but don’t be blinded by what is an obvious attempt to save face.
93. jefflz | 09.25.08
Typical McCain. Not your straight talker after all. Not only is his judgment poor, he is acting desperate. This does not build confidence. Why lie to Letterman knowing full well he would make McCain the butt of his jokes in response and he deserved being made a horse’s posterior. Furthermore, this entire stunt about debate cancellation is also vintage McCain. When in doubt, throw sand in the eyes of the electorate. McCain is, devoid of constructive ideas. How much of his shoot-from-the-hip, deceptive and disingenuous behavior do we need to witness before we conclude that this man is unfit to lead this country?
94. al | 09.25.08
I do respect McCain for his service in Nam but he makes me question his reasoning ability as potential commander in chief. My doubts began when he said “the economy is sound.”
95. saving america | 09.25.08
Actually, by shaming McCain back into the debate (and keeping him away from the Congressional budgetary negotiations), I think it is Letterman (and Obama) who helps the most: keeping one of the never-met-a-deregulation-I-didnt-like architects of the current collapse away from the table. It’s John McCain along with Phil Gramm who are responsible for the current mess: for McCain to profess that he’s “working to fix the crisis” is the sheerest form of showboat hypocrisy. He has been a consistent advocate of the deregulation that has caused this debacle and offers nothing significant to address it. McCain should be ashamed of himself.

100. Cindi | 09.25.08
There you have it! If he flat-out lied to David Letterman, he will lie to the American people.
101. Al | 09.25.08
McSame was using this as another hail mary to help his slipping in the poles. It was all politics and not ” Country First” If he really is about “country First” He would have picked a real QUALIFIED VP.
102. Larry Linn | 09.25.08
President Bush, “the Worst President in history” is able to manage two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, deal with the invasion of Georgia by Russia, manage the devastation in the Texas and Louisiana by a hurricane, deal with Korea reactivating their nuclear program, etc. McCain did not even read the three page bailout proposal until Tuesday. McCain then suspends his campaign “to provide leadership”? McCain has exposed the limits of his myopic mentality. If he honestly believes that the condition of the United States of America is more important than the campaign, he should give his concession speech today.
103. Maureen | 09.25.08
Interesting; so now McCain is caught on film lying to Letterman. He deserves to get skewed and I think it’s justice for his fawning friend Letterman to get stung by this old coot and do the skewing. I’m tired of hearing Letterman go over the top with his adulation about McCain’s hereoism.
There are thousands of unsung American heroes and most of them haven’t used their heroism to make political hay. He was an officer, for God’s sake, trained at Annapolis — he’s expected to be a damn hero. He signed up for a Hero’s Job. He did what he was supposed to do.
What about the average GI who’s losing his home (McCain could afford to lose several), doesn’t have a decent job, and who’s VA benefits are at risk? All problems that Letterman’s great hero will never face. What does Letterman say about them? What about the men and women who have died or been scarred forever b/c of this damn immoral war (which this allegedly great hero, McCain, fully supports)?
And as for suspending the campaign — well, that’s as ludicrous as Palin as a VP choice, which still asounds me (and is a tremendous insult to any thinking American). Didn’t Old Clueless said the economy was “fundamentally strong” a month or so ago? Now, quite laughably, he’s saying that he needs to rescue it — oh yeah? How can he rescue what he’s completely out of touch about?
He’s the LAST guy I want planning economic strategy that impacts my financial security. His job right now is to try to run a decent rational campaign and he’s failed miserably; bowing out of an important debate under the pretense of being our economic savior is absolutely outrageous.
If the American electorate elects the McCain/Palin ticket it will surely get what it deserves: more of the same — and it will prove to me that the “Dumbing Down of America” is complete and irreversible.
104. SP | 09.25.08
Neither McCain nor Obama are on the congressional committees that are dealing with this bailout. As long as they stay in touch with congressional leadership and show up to vote they are doing their jobs.
The debate is on Friday night in prime time. McCain can fly down to Mississippi to participate in the debates if he wanted to. It seems like this is a ploy to ultimately get the VP debate moved back, giving Palin more time to study the atlas.
107. Hans Giersberg | 09.25.08
Letterman may not know it, but he has done the nation a great service. He has exposed John McCain for who he really is - a hypocrit, a spin meister, and a politician who will say or do anything to become president. And he did this with humor. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but humor is the mightiest weapon of them all. It skewers those trying to hide their real selves. Humor ended Palin’s 15 minutes of fame (thank you, Tina), and now it has shined the light on the real John McCain. It’s a real shame that the press has failed in it’s duty to expose these frauds. The real truthtellers in this campaign are people like David Letterman, Jon Stewart, and Tina Fey.
108. Mary-Jo Hales | 09.25.08
First, last, and in between!
Barack Obama is NOT a MUSLIM. He has never been a Muslim and, given his very public Christian stand, most likely will never convert to Islam!
For any of you that still believe those e-mails that have been mindlessly forwarded by certain unthinking, uninformed people (I’m sure all of you know very well who you are), you obviously need to do a reality check. You can check reality quite easily via the internet. There is at least one web site where you can check out almost everything related to e-mail communications.
I would note that it is not at all Christian-like behavior to say false things about anyone. That also goes for forwarding e-mails that don’t contain even a grain of truth.
I am horribly offended by those American voters who do not avail themselves of all available information to educate themselves about political issues or candidates. Apparently, this country is full of ignorant people who don’t want to educate themselves or learn the truth about anything.
Our country has already been hijacked by lies once - into the war in Iraq. It would be criminal for us to allow a Presidential election to be hijacked by lies. Hold people accountable for what they send you. Check it out, and then let them know if they sent you something full of lies or innuendos.
109. Joe Wood | 09.25.08
Does President Hover mean anything to the people today. I fear not! A depression for these kids today would do more than interfer with their text messaging and their finger nail appointment. I don’t suppose that they have seen pictures of soup lines and wondered what the people were thinking. Today, might not be the time to have credit card debt and if you are old, as I am, you might take the situation a bit more serious than worrying about someone skipping Letterman. I like Dave, watch him every night. Do I place stock in what he says. **** no! He is there for entertainment and himself.
110. Greg Whetsell | 09.25.08
Sounds like Dave was more upset that McCain took the time to speak with Katie, but not him. Get over it, Dave!! As a fellow Hoosier, I am telling you to relax….

Re: Peter #6
Yes, a real leader would and should call time-out from campaigning, vacationing or any other optional activity that would keep them from their reponsibility to deal with a critical issue in their current job role.
Was this a political move? Yes, it is most probably a political calculation but at the same time it is the right thing to do. At a critical debate and vote such as this, I believe legislators should be at their posts doing the job we pay them to do.
112. Viki | 09.25.08
Did anyone see the show? The clip showed Sen. McCain laughing with Couric while getting his makeup repaired. Why didn’t he just say “Dave, I’m sorry, but I don’t think I should do a nighttime talk show at this time.” Instead he tells him he has to “Catch a plane to Washington right away, because the country is in crisis.” He was not catching a plane he was giving an interview to Katie Couric and a speech in New York this AM. Why did he lie?
113. jackten1 | 09.25.08
If McCain had actually gone to DC as he told Letterman he was going to do, then that would have been understandable, but he lied to Letterman and was on another show right there in NYC. This might be a minor deal, but I think it shows a lack of character on McCain’s part.
115. Bob Anders | 09.25.08
McCain was still in New York!!! the whole thing about needing to be in D.C. is bulls_ _ _. he doesn’t even know how to lie correctly.
Too Dumb to be President.
116. meb | 09.25.08
McCain’s afraid to debate Obama. McCain doesn’t understand the economy and is not on any of the financial committees, so he’s not needed or wanted in Washing to solve the crisis. It’s a political stunt to everyone but the Repub Koolaide drinkers and the talking point hacks.
117. paul | 09.25.08

118. Greg Whetsell | 09.25.08
L. Phillips - I agree with you 100 percent!!! As an acting state senator, he and all of the others (B.H. Obama) should be in Washington 24-7 until this thing is settled. This little debate can wait until the threat of a gigantic financial crisis that could be worse than the Great Depression in 1929 is taken care of completely. If it came down to it, then they should even consider postponing the election until this is a done deal.
119. Brett | 09.25.08
Relax, Letterman was just joking around. Don’t get so defensive.
McCain says he’s suspending his campaign, but he went on CBS News while he was supposed to be taping Letterman. Then he went to the Clinton thing (televise) this morning. Meanwhile, Palin had a rally in PA, and the 527’s and the RNC are all running new ads today. He’s lying–he’s not suspending anything, and Obama is in Washington right now with McCain.
In other words, it’s all talk and PR from the McCain campaign. No way this was his idea…he’s better than this.
In the end, he’ll debate Obama on Friday. It’s unprecedented to skip out.
To the 7 of you who said that Obama lacks experience: Who is this man?

If I had an important job to do, and something had to be canceled to do it… I would cancel in a heartbeat. So would Obama. Letterman needs to grow up! Is he better then McCain or even Obama? Is his job more important then the welfare of the nation? If you think so you need to turn off the tube every now and then and look around. Things get cancelled. Who cares? People with nothing better to do than complain.
121. Thinker | 09.25.08
John McCain and Phil Gramm have been pushing deregulation hard for years. They are largely responsible for the economic mess we are in, and it’s shameful that he’s now acting like he is somehow saving the day. If McCain is elected, he is likely to make Gramm the new Treasury Secretary…. that’s like making bank robbers the bank president.
122. MK | 09.25.08
Here’s my issue:
If McCain says he’s gotta go back to solve this crisis, great, go do it. But why lie about it? He wasn’t on Letterman because he was “catching a plane”; really he was being interviewed by Katie Couric. That would all be fine & good if he actually flew back to DC right after that interview. Instead, he stuck around in NYC that night (Wed) and Thursday morning (today) to talk to the Clinton Global Initiative. Again, why lie? It seems McCain somehow wants credit for “going right back to provide leadership” but he did actually do it.
I’m not burning with a strong personal agenda on this. I’ve always liked McCain, but it smacks of dishonesty — and a kind of dishonesty where somehow he’s not even ashamed when he’s been caught being dishonest. It makes me sad.
123. bm | 09.25.08
It’s amazing that the obvious McCain supporters can only retreat to belittling Obama when McCain continues to blunder and make erratic judgements in an attempt to become the president. McCain is an old man who had lost his sense of judgement and does not know anything about economics, per John McCain. So if you still insist on living in denial, that’s okay, just don’t expect David Letterman to stop doing his job…Laughter is medicine for the soul and that was a good dose last night..since the economy, the two unnecessary wars, the housing market…shall I go on? is no laughting matter. Peace out.

FOX is more reliable then all the liberal channels anyway…
125. tom davis | 09.25.08
It looks like the main reason Letterman was so upset was that McCain cancelled him for Couric. So he lied to Letterman and got his butt chewed off for it.
Letterman was funny, but also brutal. John McCain is not he same guy he was 8 years ago, which is not his fault. He’s 72 years old, under alot of pressure from the gop and still wants to be his own man. I’m glad this is all playing out now, and I hope other people can see it too. he’s not right for the country as president now. He was 8 years ago. And if God forbid he gets seriously ill, we would be in deep trouble with Palin in the oval office.
126. frank | 09.25.08
all you idiots who say we are in such a big crisis are you saying it because that’s what they are telling you.do you all still believe that sadaam has weapons of mass destruction.another 25 billion to gm when and where will it end there’s your crisis.i wouldn’t give them a f**** dime.this would be an example of a life time.
127. Maureen | 09.25.08
Actually, to whoever posted that McCain is a Republic leader, in reality most mainstream Republicans can’t stand him. He’s disliked almost as much as Romney and the only thing that really got his party behind him was the Palin trick (it tricked the radical wing into thinking they had somehow trumped Obama b/c he did not pick HC — but comparing SP to HC is like comparing Paris Hilton to Henry Kissinger or Margaret Thatcher). Letterman’s show last night was NOT about Letterman and as Letterman admitted he accepted McCain’s cancellation on the premise that a national crisis called him away. Letterman was clearly disappointed but nonetheless respectful of McCain’s “decision.” UNTIL — and rightly so — he caught him in a bold faced lie. This can only be looked at as more Basic Cluelessless… is McCain so incredibly stupid that he could actually think Letterman and his team would NOT KNOW he was over with Couric instead of playing Superman off to save the US? Is McCain that naive? Or is he that Reckless? Or is he just Arrogant? Or, is he just such a liar that lying is commonplace to him? Good Grief! He can’t even handle a simple guest appearance without bungling it. Not too smart: lying to someone who really likes & respects you and then being caught on film in the lie. Astonishing.
128. Phyllis | 09.25.08
I am amazed at Letterman’s audacity. He holds himself and a time slot on a late night talk show to be the all to end all. Give me a break. He is nothing more than a late night talk show host. Letterman’s behavior was immature, petty, and arrogant.
If you need a hero, check out Walter Reed hospital.

Where did all you people come from? I mean Letterman, come on… I used to watch him back in college days - yea in the 80’s he WAS funny, cutting edge stuff. But now it all seems old. If any of you losers actually watch his show, you would see that even DAVE does not show up for his show half the time…
FYI accoring to todays ZOGBY poll, McCain now has a 9-point edge, 49 percent to 40 percent, over Obama on the critical question of who would be the best manager of the economy…
130. Mrs. Julian A. Semilian | 09.25.08
That Senator John McCain would be repudiated by any sensible individual for not appearing at a social and entertainment event at present is absurd. I only regret that time constraints obliged Senator McCain to decline Mr. Letterman’s invitation via phone rather than through blue-black ink on 100% cotton paper.
There is a reason why David Letterman is referred to as the HOST of his popular television show, Late Night with David Letterman. Mr. Letterman’s show is a social forum, a diversionary entertainment; a corporate salon, nothing more.
In any context of true significance, Mr. Letterman is, indeed, a lightweight. Politicians are not and should not be at the beck-and-call of peevish, self-important salon-hosts.
As a HOST, Mr. Letterman issued an invitation to a GUEST, Senator McCain. Mr. Letterman’s GUEST sent his regrets. Mr. McCain followed etiquette and protocol. Mr. Letterman, on the other hand, is found wanting in both realms. That Mr. Letterman’s social events are scripted and televised makes no difference.
Mr. Letterman’s spiteful, mediocre reference to “Metamucil” could not better illustrate Senator McCain’s judgment in choosing to apply his focus elsewhere.
Why would Senator McCain, or anyone for that matter, squander their valuable time to appear at an uninspiring and uninspired entertainment event hosted by a person who cannot control his own spiteful hostility towards recalcitrant guests?
It seems that Mr. Letterman is a HOST deserving of a dwindling salon-circle, as he cannot refrain from denigrating the GUESTS he invites to his corporate social functions if they do not behave in the manner that Mr. Letterman would like.
.

Job: “McCain should send Palin to the debate. Beside Obamma’s worthy opponent is Palin at best. I have to doubt Palin is going to rip Obama apart. Heck he might calls himself Osama – he already admitted that he’s “a muslim””
You are a sad, sad being. Anyone who has half a brain cell has already checked up on the “Obama is a terrorist muslim set on destroying our nation’s infrastructure” myth. Also, you might notice that the man’s name is not Obamma, and not Osama, and, after noticing, stop spelling like an idiot. I love how narrow minded people like you can’t participate in intelligent discourse about policy or any issues that actually make a difference and thus revert to kindergarten tactics like picking on a candidate for his name. Or did he supposedly pick his entire name when he secretly converted to Islam?

Letterman used to be funny - watched him for years. Along the way it was basicaly the same ole unfunny stuff regurgitated over and over. He is paid millions each year to do what? I know people pushing brooms who add more value in their service than Dave. He gets a free ride at being a clown and a fool, but couldn’t he at least be a funny clown or fool? It seems that these sorts start thinking that they are providing some kind of valuable service and become delusional with their own importance. Come on, Dave! Stick to “Stupid Pet Tricks!” They are far more entertaining. Stop trying to act like some kind of heavyweight where everyone has to come by your desk and pass your muster. Who really cares what you think? Call around, on your show, and ask people what they think of you. Most won’t even know you. LOL
139. Kathy | 09.25.08
For all you people bashing Dave and supporting McCain for the wonderful thing he did for the country, are you aware that as of this morning, McCain WAS STILL IN NEW YORK!??? (Sorry to shout.) He presented at Clinton’s conference.
He never went to Washington when he said he was, because he was so important for the process, and Nancy Pelosi was quoted as telling him there was no need for him to be there. The work was already almost done last night and he would not have been involved anyway. I assume he will make it for the 4 PM meeting today and everyone will gush about how much work he did, how much he sacrifices for the country, etc. It is all a sham.
I can hardly wait to see Dave’s response tonight. Think of all the good will McCain has thrown down the drain after being on the show a dozen times. Sad.
140. Benny | 09.25.08
I just read through a number of the comments above. Has anyone else noticed that a large percentage of the comments in favor of John McCain are written in broken english, or are wrought with grammatical errors? They sound like they were either written by backwoods individuals who haven’t attended grade school, or maybe the McCain campaign outsourced responding to this article to a cheap-labor foreign country to make comments. Really, it’s a bit strange. Maybe what his camp is calling ‘elitist’ is really just another word for being educated and American.

Lying seems like a recurring Republican theme. From all of Bush’s lies ot Palin lying about earmarks, the bridge, about open government and cooperation with the investigation, and all the others.
142. heyduke | 09.25.08
“If not for the news coverage would anybody “really” know what happens on the Letterman show?”
No, hardly anyone. Only about TEN MILLION Americans watched Letterman make a fool out of McCain for an hour, that’s all.

Wow - if any of you think McPain isn’t hiding behind the economy as his numbers take a dive then….oh wait, you probably also voted for Bush - twice. Never mind.

Way to go Dave. I do think Dave has genuinely liked McCain in the past–go back and watch those previous McCain visits. But McCain is simply not the man he once was. He is hell-bent on winning this election–truth, integrity and COUNTRY be damned.
145. Xdem | 09.25.08
Why is canceling an appearance on David Letterman’s show an issue?
Letterman stopped being funny years ago, that is why his latest show had the lowest ratings in it’s history. He is always predictably partisan, as is his studio audience and his viewing audience. Almost none of the voters Sen. McCain needs to reach to win the Presidency watch letterman.
Sen. McCain understands that this emergency won’t be solved unless the current level of partisan rancor can be reduced. The election has driven partisan rancor, bitterness and hatred to unprecedented levels. He suspended his campaign (including advertising)to create an environment where a non-partisan solution could be reached.
Boxer and Pelosi say he is not needed. They have a (partisan) proposal that they are going to present. No plan including this one will be supported by Democrats unless it is also supported by Republicans, they don’t have a political death wish. Are Boxer and Pelosi delusional enough that they think they can deliver Republican support? President Bush can’t deliver Republican support. The only person who has the credibility to deliver Republican support is Sen. McCain. They need him desperately even if their bitter partisanship compels them to deny it.
The question is not why did he cancel, the question is why did he ever accept in the first place? Sen. McCain seems to have the quaint notion that if he is elected, he should be the President of all the people. So he repeatedly goes into hostile venues where he expects uncivil and unfair treatment, unlike “play it safe” Obama.

The Congressional committees responsible for hammering out a bailout deal are making progress.
Neither Obama or McCain are part of these negotiations and would only be in the way, diverting attention from the task at hand.
A majority of members of Congress see McCain’s campaign suspension as a political gimmick. (Wish the average American could take off their blinders and see the same.)
McCain doesn’t want to debate Obama for two reasons: a) he isn’t well prepared and knows Obama will run circles around him; and 2)he’s hoping that by cancelling this first debate, they would need to reschedule it, perhaps knocking out the vp debate in the process - where Palin will only look foolish, rehearsed, and lacking in foreign policy know-how.
Letterman’s disappointment is only a small part of the big picture: McCain basically imploded when he saw the latest poll numbers, panic-stricken he felt he had no choice but to do something drastic to get attention and, hopefully, fool the public into thinking he was being courageous. He did the same darn thing with the first day of Hurricane Gustav. He didn’t want Bush and Cheney to speak and so conveniently used the hurricane as an excuse to downplay the first day of the Republican Convention, successfully avoiding the Bush Administration’s presence for all the world to see and looking like - to those who are easily fooled - Mr. Compassionate, putting all aside for the sake of the hurricane’s victims.
Wake up and smell the coffee! Bush is a poser, a manipulator, and for years now, NOT the maverick you thought he was. He is doing what his handlers want him to do as evidenced by his - and Palin’s - scripted only appearances.

People are inherently stupid, which is why they must vote a party line, no matter what. It’s way easier for them, instead of having to think about what is going on.
McCain and Palin have done lots of flip-flopping. Are the fundamentals of the economy REALLY strong, Mr. McCain?
Why won’t a Republican call him on that and THINK about who they’re voting for? Oh yea, because people who vote along party lines are stupid.
If Obama made that statement, I’d be questioning whether or not he’s ready to serve.
When they started, I decided that both McCain and Obama would have to WORK to EARN my vote. Sadly, people who think are not in the majority.
If nothing else, people must remember a time in the late 80s, when Donald Trump was getting rich, and everyone else was on this “get rich” kick. House prices were going up, up, up….
….and then….. the Keating Savings & Loan scandal.
Resolving that cost the taxpayers $500 BILLION!!
And who was involved?
John McCain.
STOP with voting on party lines and THINK about your candidate.

It is a typical ploy by the RNC to distract the American people by having them
focus on the problem then who would best serve the nation.Obama’s press conference showed how presidential his demeanor came through. Let him not be
distracted by this obvious tactic. Can we finally get someone to govern with
intelegence and honesty?

by golly, this economic disaster is so important we should all suspend our daily lives and go to washington dc, just like McCain, to fix the banking mess to show the world we all support his appearance of leadership during difficult times, even if there are more qualified people already working on it. after all it is not competence that dictates how a problem should be resolved, rather it is the appearance of leadership. a good lesson in point, if Obama had not mocked McCain’s assertion that the economy is fundamentally sound, we wouldn’t be in this mess, right? 2 days after Obama questioned McCain’s assertion of fundamental stability, the economy is such a total disaster that McCain needs to suspend his campaign, even though economy is not McCain’s strongest weapon in his arsenal.

When you cancel an invitation, at the 11th hour, you usually send your regrets with the truth instead of a lie. Even NO explanation would have been better than deceit. I believe that’s a big point here.
153. Jason Bloomberg | 09.25.08
I do love this “McCain is rushing back to fix what is broken, doing the job he is paid to do” — let us just remember which party broke it all in the first place.
There does seem to be be a reticence for McCain to present himself before the people. Holding out until the US-Pakistan war is fully started so he can hope to ride the course as a pro-War President ?
154. TV Watcher | 09.25.08
Let me explain something to all you psychotic McCain suporters. Late night talk shows are produced exactly as if they were live TV. They are broadcast just hours after they are recorded. The whole day is spent in a frantic mad dash to get everything in it’s place at the start of taping. Making sure guests get picked up at the airport, jokes are written, skits are polished, etc. There is no second run, very little editing and certainly no time to fix a last minute disaster like your only guest canceling at the last minute. Dave is a consumate perfectionist. He cares deeply about the quality of his show. Here he is, just two hours before the audience starts to file in and they have no show. I’d be ****** too. And then to top it off, it turns out that the real reason he canceled his appearence is because he wanted to appear on Katie Couric.

Crisis - a condition of instability or danger, as in social, economic, political, or international affairs, leading to a decisive change.
funny what i read about this, “crisis”. if anyone believes for one minute that all these “big money makers” (i.e CEO’s, politicians,….not u all who post on this website) had not a clue about what was going on…i have a bridge to sell you in alaska.
truth be told mccain/bush is the reason we are, where we are. tax breaks, fiscal unabashed spending on whatever, policital cowering to these billion dollar corps. the writing was on the wall…u can let them “play u for the fool”…i read, everybody does!
mccain wasn’t “rushing” away to stop anything. he just went to grab his sanitation pad, to clean up the mess that is the american economy…since for once, he can’t turn a blind eye because this could wrinkle his pocket book.
has anyone thought about the amount of billion dollar companies that have “enron’d”…since enron…oh my sheep…u have been lead to slaughter…hoodwinked, run amuck, lead astray…it’s hard to call this a “crisis”, when we knew this was going to happen.
whomever takes over in the oval office…thanks to the “Bushes” (daddy w/ Irag…Jeb, who gave W the election & W, in the land of the blind, the one eye man is king, the idiot)…the joke will be on US…really the United States….well that’s what i heard!

You people are incredible and make me ashamed to be an American. An elected Senator decides to put aside his ambition for a little while to go to Washington to DO THE JOB HE WAS ELECTED TO DO, and you simpletons attack him for it? Unbelievable.
Don’t you think that every elected representative at the federal level, especially a Senator who would be President in January, SHOULD be involved in trying to work something out to help stave off the biggest economic crisis in over 60 years? $700 BILLION of taxpayer (our) money is at stake here, not to mention the future of our overall economy, and you disgusting partisan hacks put a higher priority on a made for TV event than on actually seeing our representatives try to prevent a financial meltdown? Are you freaking kidding me. Call me crazy, but any Senator who wants to be President in a few short months is completely right to want to have some input in this matter. However, with fellow ‘citizens’ like some of you all are I sometimes wonder why anyone even bothers trying to solve this nation’s problems.
157. fred | 09.25.08
Unfortunately this will do nothing to affect the impression of people who support McCain. His supporters, while pining for reduced government, don’t seem to notice that McCain’s familiy has been at the public teat for four generations. This group is immune to reality - heck they even thought that GWB was worthy of the office, didn’t notice that Reagan had dementia since his second term as governor of California. So now we get fluffy as VP.
158. robin | 09.25.08
#95 “saving america” has it just right, good post. McCain is responsible for the financial crisis in this country. He and his co-chair Phil Gramm. Some of you ppl need to google “The Keating Five” and educate yourselves on McCain’s past. This is a political stunt, McCain is scared to death of Palin having to debate Biden. He is asking that the presidential debate replace the vice presidential debate on Oct 2nd. After Katie Couric interviewed Palin and showed the world that Palin is obviously clueless and not qualified to be “a heartbeat away from the presidency”,I can’t say as I blame McCain for running scared. Letterman is hilarious, he has a right to be ticked off that McCain lied to him.
159. Lola Sanderman | 09.25.08
McCain LIED! Outright LIED. He was NOT hurrying to Washington. He was DOWN THE STREET with Katie Couric, and Dave Letterman COUNT him in his LIE! Another lie.
Like Dave outlined . . . why didn’t he have PALIN substitute for him with Letterman and tell Letterman that he had to do a interview “down the street” with CBS News? Why didn’t he drop by for 5 minutes and cut the interview short announcing he would cancel is campaign on the very show he announced his candidacy?
I’m with Dave and the majority of the American People with this . . . this was a cop out.

I don’t remember hearing that a president’s job is to entertain the people… I also think McCain would have gotten better publicity on Letterman than in choosing what he did.
I’d be ticked too if McCain cancelled on me. But that’s the nature of business. People cancel. We have to be mature enough to know that the world doesn’t revolve around entertainment or campaigns.
As an American citizen, I’m glad those I voted for are on task. I wish Obama would be just as eager to deal with his senator seat as he seems to be with a mock-debate (and presidential debates aren’t real debates anyway).
169. Ed | 09.25.08
McCain 2008 is a tired old man, a broken hero fighting to make a final heroic stand. He has repeatedly demonstrated that he is not the man we saw in 2000 - not by a long shot.
He is listening to the very people I hoped he would stand up to, kowtowing to the extreme views that have time and again made life worse for the average Joe. The man I see today is not a man who reaches across aisles to build bridges; but instead a man who sows fear, frustration and furry.
His frustrated, bitter, ‘danger crazed’ campaign is so negative I can not bear to watch him speak. How is this approach supposed to increase his support?
I am an independent who until about a month ago was a solid McCain man. I am disgusted with myself when I even ponder the idea of a McCain led United States.
Obama on the other hand inspires me. I want to watch him, hear him and follow him. He has changed my mind and my outlook. He has given me at least fleeting hope.
If for nothing else - thanks for that.

What on Earth were McCain’s people thinking? You don’t cross David Letterman! Period. He has a VERY large followings and is renowned for ruthlessly skewering people when he has the slightest cause. Not the kind of thing you want to do when you are dropping in the polls.
McCain had a perfect opportunity to keep his schedule and make his case to the public on the Letterman Show. He passed and went for Couric, after lying to Letterman’s people? And Dave was actually able to show McCain live on Couric’s show when he told Dave he was on the way to the airport??? This does not show good judgement at all.
If John McCain can’t handle a simple situation like this openly and honestly then what can we expect from his presidency?

Selecting Sarah Palin as our backup President was a flaky move. Canceling the first Presidential debate is a desperate move. As a supporter of Barack Obama it pleases me no end that McCain is running scared.
Both of these decisions share a common strategy. McCain’s campaign strategy is different from the Karl Rove technique. McCain plays dodgeball. He tries to fake out his opponent, to get his opponent off center and off message.
Whether or not it’s clear to McCain and his advisors, this strategy is not working with Obama or with the American people. Day by day, inexorably, we our disillusionment with McCain grows and Obama’s lead widens. Those who can see beyond the weeks of tumult and shouting ahead agree it’s Obama who can better help us shape America going forward. He is the better choice.

‘No Taxation without REIT Preparation!*’
OK, if the Economy is so critical that John has to stand-up Dave for a date with Katie, why don’t we all have a bi-partisan focus on the Economy and let John, Barach, Dave, Katie, Jay and Jimmie, as well as our Representatives and Senators know that We the Taxpayers of the Unites States want ownership of equity in any bailout???
Remembering as I do the denouement of the 80’s Savings & Loan crisis, when many of the same scoundrels who had ruined their S&L’s issuing loans to cronies involved in speculative commercial development were allowed by the Congress and the Treasury to buy back the tax-payer-paid-for real-estate for a fraction of actual value, I have no intent of remaining silent while being fleeced again.
If we buy it, then by damn, it’s ours - The Congress needs to do what was proposed (for a nanosecond) at the S&L bailout - Set up a REIT for the ‘toxic’ mortgages and real estate, issue the tax-payers stock shares based on their last 5 years of Income Tax payments, and let the fabled magic of the market work for us - if the crony capitalists want the devalued real-estate and debt instruments, let them compete for equity in the open market, rather than striking bargain abasement deals with the next crop of CEOs/Senior Partners to be spun out of the revolving doors of the Congress and the Executive.
*The Motley Fool is making the same equity demand right now, and speaking of Fools, Dave Letterman and Jon Stewart are the Court Jester/Fools of 21st Century America; any prospective President worth his salt would know better than to dis’ those who use Humor to tell Truth to Power….
179. Cheryl | 09.25.08
It might have not been a night for humor for McCain but is is very rude to cancel your appearance and end up on another show. He could have still gone on Letterman and had a serious discussion about the economy. He did it on Couric’s show. Many would assume just because it is a “comedy” show they do talk shop when the guests are on.
So don’t ther and defend someones actions you are who you are and if John McCain was true to the bullshit he is spewing it wouldn’t matter what show or format he was on talking about serious issues he can still get his point across.
It was in bad tastes in judgement to lie saying he was hopping on a plane rigth away. That was a bold faced lie,.. you’d be ****** if your friend popped out on you saying something serious is going on and then you end up finding out they are out on a date with someone elseyou know.
The lies jusst prove what we will be in for for another 4 years.. more lies ontop of lies ontop of lies. The things people should really focus on is health, home, comfort, education and living. Period.. those are the first things people should list on thier top 10 because you actually need those things in life.
180. Dan | 09.25.08
Republicans seem to have no sense of humor, the rancor and anger they have seems to override humor, logic, and intellectual debate these days. Lettermen was pretty funny last night. It was not a well-thought out move for McCain to ditch his show, claim he was on his way to Washington, and then go get interviewed for another TV station instead. He deserved to get poked fun at for that. #129 is right, there was an odd blip in the polling today with the Zogby poll that put McCain ahead… I think it’s an anomaly though, 5 other polls released in the last day clearly show him at least 2 or 3 points behind. Zogby hasn’t been very accurate in the last 5 or 6 years, it was also an online-only poll, which never are very good. Really, polling at this point won’t indicate the outcome in November. It will get down to who people think can best fix the mess Bush has got us in - the largest and most expensive government in US history, insane debt, Iraq War, our failing economy - McCain or Obama? My guess is when all is said and done, McCain just isn’t going to look like enough of an agent of change. He’s only polling well with older people. If senior citizens show up in droves and those under 40 fail to, that’s the only way I see him sneaking in ahead of Obama. And with so much riding on the line this time, the under 40 crowd seems to be excited and ready to vote.

Hey Philip (…and the people whom share your opinion),
You apparently didn’t read the whole article, did you? “Fearless leader” John McCain SAID he was going back to work, but he was DOWN THE STREET with another reporter:
“Letterman had yet another way to lampoon McCain when he found out that McCain was still in New York — not flying to Washington. In fact, McCain was talking to Katie Couric.
With the video feed of McCain and Couric displayed for all to see, Letterman quipped, “He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport, does he? Hey, John, I got a question! You need a ride to the airport?”
End Game: John McCain = Lier. Maybe had McCain ACTUALLY gone to “work”, your argument would mean something. Next time try reading the whole story before you bunch all up and cry.

Letterman was spot on! John McCain still in New York when he had to be in Washington for the crisis… maybe he will make it to DC before the scheduled debate so at least he has an excuse.
And Palin’s interview with Katie Couric, now that’s a piece that inspires confidence in her being VP. Talk about stumbling through an interview. It’s no wonder they have kept her in a bubble, and regardless of what John McCain says about his vetting process for the VP, if this is any indication of how he would run his administration, this stuff scares me.
The American public should wake up and take a very serious look at John McCain and Sarah Palin, this could be a real recipe for disaster. The only bright spot is that even if John McCain is elected, the Democrats will control both houses and limit the damage that will be done.
God help our country.

To: 155. Disgusted
If you can’t see the (attempt at a) strategic move that McCain was trying to pull with this then you are far too gullible. Both candidates are trying to posture themselves appropriately in response to the economic crisis. McCain tried to take the advantage by coming out quickly to suspend his campaign and delay the debate. That put Obama in a bind since McCain had pulled a fast one on him by agreeing to make a joint statement.
From there it’s like a chess game. What’s Obama’s move? “No, John, we need to talk to the American people.” Nice move on Obama’s part. Now McCain has to suspend his campaign or else he looks weak. That clears Obama to drive home less divisive messaging in his ads.
John McCain, I’m betting, comes up with a reason to go to the debate even if there is not a full agreement on the bailout. He can’t look like he won’t talk to the American people.
Honestly, it’s been a fascinating series of moves on the part of both campaigns. My personal analysis is that McCain is starting to feel the heat and is beginning to fall on the ropes. Obama is doing a good job not allowing him to gain the advantage. The tide could still turn but I think Obama is showing himself to be the better fighter at this stage in the game.

Think about if this is how McCain treats foreign leaders- even if they are like Letterman and YOU don’t like them. Is that a way to treat people? Seems it is better to be honest with EVERYBODY. That way they don’t start to wonder about you McCain.
And I believe it when McCain says Obama wants to teach kindergarteners sex ed like 17 year olds. “It’s the truth” McCain says. Right. It is the truth to people who would believe such nonsense. And they exist.

Are you morons living on the same planet? Do you know we are in a financial crisis? I am involved….I called my senator and my governor regarding this bailout bill….did you? I happen to think that my president should put ME….or should I say, “WE THE PEOPLE” FIRST!! I want to be thought of in every decsision my government makes. With that said, ALL SENATORS should be looking at this bill and in on the desicion making. One of the two will be our next president and they need to know first hand what is going on and be able to see the facts and make a descicion based on those facts. If Mc Cain wants to cancel and put all time and energy on ME…I say go for it!! We have time for the debates, but not enough time on this crisis. Obama has had plenty of chances to be in the same room with McCain to debate. Now that he has had plenty of time to prepare and is a nervous wreck anticipating the debate he and his followers are going to cry. Funny! Get over your Obama..he is not the mesiah people….He is a talker.. that is it. He cannot do anything more than that!

Oh! Get Real! John McCain said SCREW YOU to Lettermen.
John McCain constantly tells the American people SCREW YOU!
When John McCain had an opportunity to help millions of Americans improve their quality of life by voting for an increase in minimum wage. John McCain voted no, nothing, nada for you 18 times in 26 years – he just says SCREW YOU!
John McCain has a zero voting record on equal pay for equal work. he just says SCREW YOU to working women.
When Americans are loosing jobs to foreign countries – John McCain says I have a job –SCREW YOU.
When million’s of American families are loosing the only home they have, John McCain says I have seven homes – SCREW YOU!
In April 2006 John McCain was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans. John McCain said I do not need the VA I have the Senate health Insurance – SCREW YOU!

I take my hat off to #108 Mary Jo Hales out of all your comments she is the only one that made sense. Out of all 130 comments. I did not see David Letterman on the ballet so why all the harsh words at him. I do not think he did anything wrong, is speaking the truth against the law know??? If any of you can look at what is going on with our economic and where the United States stands in the world today and can bother to question anything but the truth.
As for Sarah Palin she is an insult to women. She is like the old blonde form a box joke. I wonder how many languish she can speak? I wonder since she got her passport in 2006 how many countries’s she has been too? I wonder if any of you folks realize to be the Vice President you must understand “World Economy”
It is not about who can shot the biggest bear, or who is the best hunter or hockey Mom. This is a very serious moment in America of John McCain picked someone like Condoleezza Rice one of the most intelligent women to have every even be in the White House
For the record David Letterman is the best, that is why he is number1…
198. robhon | 09.25.08
#189, that is the most ridiculous statement on the face of this planet. The only thing you’ve convinced anyone of by saying that is that you are not capable of formulating a rational nor unique idea of your own.
Don’t ever expect to get picked for my debate team.

So what’s this about McCain having better things to do than go on Letterman? What about the other 12 times he’s been on the show, when our soldiers are getting their a**es shot off? McCain didn’t have any problem yukking it up with Dave then did he? The values of the republican party are down the toilet, and Obama has been right for the last 12 months - we need change in government.
201. Jonathan Meyers | 09.25.08
I’m Republican and voting Bob Barr, the Libertarian candidate. I just can’t vote for McCain… first after choosing a VP candidate that’s so underqualified, then his support for this taxpayer buyout of private businesses, and additionally how he’s handling his campaign so badly. If he can’t run his campaign while addressing these financial problems, how successfully can he run our country?

No wonder Letterman was hacked. How dare McCain not sit around yukking it up with him when the SENATE to which he is elected was wrestling with the pesky old American economy. Gee, I bet old Dave was really hacked when 9-11 knocked him off TV.

McCain is falling apart. “Leadership” from Republican idealogues got us into this mess (on Wall Street, Main Street and Al-Rashid Street in Baghdad). Now only the government they hate can get us out, and with a ticket price that dwarfs domestic spending (so the bridges will keep collapsing and the kids will keep dropping out of school).
Billions of dollars for nation building abroad, but none for home. Seems downright unpatriotic. But wait, now there’s more. $700 Billion to help out the financial institutions who led us into this mess, so that their overpaid leaders and employees can continue in business and keep their homes and lifestyles, even while the small business owners and working stiffs across America see their futures wither.
In the years ahead, we will all hear about the programs we can’t fund because we spent all the money on the bailout. No administration in history has so bankrupted America as Bush and his “conservative” friends. John, I wouldn’t want to debate that either.
206. dom | 09.25.08
That’s what I like about McCain, he does what he thinks best should be done at any given time, even if it causes him to catch grief from some quarters.
Think Obama would ever cancel a media op? Hardly.
As to Letterman, he’s still on TV?
Compare McCain’s no-show on David Letterman with Obama no-show with US service men and women in Germany.
207. Mike Rundle | 09.25.08
I’m really confused by a lot of these comments.
If you think that McCain is used to doing work in the Senate and “getting things done” then you are seriously not reading up on the issues. He misses more Senate votes than he makes!
John McCain talks about alternative energy but **he’s missed the last 7 votes in the Senate on alternative energy proposals**. The guy doesn’t vote! He’s a Senator who skips more votes than almost anyone else and CERTAINLY more than Senator Obama.
McCain is the same candidate who said just a few weeks ago that the fundamentals of our economy are strong, and wasn’t showing **any urgency earlier in the week** regarding the bailout process and helping out. Now, just a few days from the debate, he **finally** acts as if the bailout is important and that our economy will fall apart without it. What is he thinking!!!
So, no, McCain doesn’t actually get anything done in the Senate anymore, and this postponement to “help out” is all just political posturing. Don’t get suckered in to think anything different. Hey, how many votes did he miss on alternative energy? Oh yeah, **the last 7 votes**.
Think about that.
208. John61254 | 09.25.08
As a candidate for president, who claims he can lead our country out of trouble, it is more important for McCain to use whatever opportunity he can (e.g., Late Night appearance) to show us (the voters) what he’s got. If he believes in himself, that would be the best way he could help our country and the faltering economy. Instead, he opts to make a lame political move by saying he has to cancel to help the Congress straighten out this mess (he thinks the economy is fundamentally sound, so what’s to help anyway?) It truly is sad to see how John McCain has compromised himself to get the backing of the Republican Party. The only thing sadder is how Republicans continue to back him and his joke of a running mate, no matter how bad they screw up or how much they secretly cringe in private over the way McCain is wrecking his campaign. Why can’t we all just be independents, forget the “parties”, and try to look at the man who is being the straightest and most honest about what he (or she) thinks is needed to run our country. Nobody is going to 100% right. Nobody can or will solve all of our problems in 4 or 40 years. I just ask for some honesty and integrity for a change. Even then, nobody is going to be perfect, but I certainly trust Obama more than I do McCain.
209. Viki | 09.25.08
I keep seeing posts that Obama had a chance to debate McCain and declined. You must be talking about the “Town Hall Meetings” First of all, those are not debates. Debates are a structured forum with a specific theme, rules, time limits, and moderated by a third party. Their have been Structured Presidential and Vice Presidential Debates since Lincoln/Douglas (1858)
(FYI, Obama agreed to do 3 or 4 “Town Halls”, but McCain said, as usual, his way or none.)
BTW,the second debate WILL be in a “Town Meeting” format and, as such, will include questions from that audience and online.

So which of the following should take priority: (1) appear on an entertainment program hosted by David Letterman, or (2) participate in the process to reach a bipartisan political agreement that could head off another Great Depression. Because he is a celebrity egotist, David Letterman picks (1). I’m with John McCain who picked (2). Get some perspective, Letterman, on what is truly important.

I’m perplexed about why anyone would care what David Letterman thinks about John McCain cancelling his appearance in his show. Perhaps part of our national illness is that people care about what Letterman, Jon Stewart, Leno and the rest of their kind think.
218. George | 09.25.08
For all of you claiming “John McCain did the right thing”, you are wrong. He was still in New York, but he kept a low profile, and acted serious.
There are HUNDREDS of Senators, its not like McCain is the smartest, but if the crisis gets fixed, be SURE he will take CREDIT FOR IT, claiming he came up with the solution.

Just another cry for attention. He is still declining to attend the first Presidential debate because he says the crisis is like 9/11 and will take all of his attention, but he was took time out to talk to CBS news and appeared at Bill Clintonʻs non-profit fundraiser. WHAT? Why he could not fly to Mississippi for a few hours and fly back, even though the Congress has pretty much already agreed on the solution and they will have already met with W by Friday? Obama knows how to use a phone and E-mail to communicate as well. This is obviously just a stunt so he does not look bad next to Obama and so Palin will not have to debate - he suggested that they take over her slot in October. If you watched her interview on CBS, she was awful. It was amazing that she could talk so much and say absolutely nothing, all with wide, shocked eyes. Talk about a moose in the headlights. Couric would be a much better informed VP.

Hey Dom -
FYI, Obama didn’t skip meeting any US servicemen on his trips. I’m a veteran, and it would have bothered me greatly. Once I checked the facts, I learned that the Army denied it and the source of the rumor retracted it.
Don’t be a dupe. See http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/afghanistan.asp. And please don’t assume that McCain is a friend of veterans, or service men and women. He’s voted AGAINST every bill providing medical and education benefits for vets. I can’t fathom why… but don’t give him credit for something he hasn’t earned.
225. salvatore | 09.25.08
Note to all the McInSane supporters who are pretending to think we are suddenly in some crisis that would necessitate canceling the first debate with only 48 hours notice: um… we’ve been at war for six years and lost over 4000 soldiers and injured tens of thousands. Shouldn’t McCain have canceled his campaign the day it began?
226. C Koopman | 09.25.08

The whole point of the outrage is that McCain did NOT jet off to Washington to tackle the issue. He lied to Letterman and then went and appeared on Katie Couric’s show. And, if I’m not mistaken, he took Palin’s spot so that she was once again shielding her from the press and any form of serious scrutiny.
These guys (the McCain team) are obviously in damage control mode and are continuing to make things worse for themselves.
231. A Bit of Common Sense Please | 09.25.08
I’ve watched Letterman a few times over the years but find that it seems there is something wrong with his brain; he acts as though his brain is fried. He acts so very stupid. If this man cannot understand why McCann had to cancel his appearance on his show, Letterman is really dumb and unAmerican. Letterman should at least marry the mother of his son so the son feels as though his father loves him enough to make him not illegitiment.
232. Sphynx | 09.25.08
Wow, good thing he made that plane and got to Washington, the whole country would drop dead without the one savior of America John McCain, God knows he would have trusted his token woman to manage the campaign but he didn’t think she was qualified. Absolutely one of the most arrogant elitist press conferences in memory. Stop the world only I can save it.
233. Laura | 09.25.08
Phillip, As a lifelong Republican, I agree with you on one thing…our senators are being paid to do a job. So why has John McCain not been in Washington since April to vote on any legislation? Who is representing his constituents in AZ? Even though I’m not a Hillary Clinton fan, I have to admit that both she and Senator Obama have returned to Washington from the campaign trail in the last six months to vote on particularly important issues. John McCain was the only senator that did not vote on the Medicare reimbursements legislation in July. Even Ted Kennedy interrupted his treatments for his brain tumor to come in for a vote.
This is the most pitiful, political ploy ever.
235. John McMurray | 09.25.08
The real issue here is David Letterman is mental ill. Anyone who watches his shows and enjoys his sick human needs help.
236. Max | 09.25.08
Interesting. The Obama supporters respond by pointing out the facts (McCain lied). The McCain supporters respond by calling Letterman names. Figures.
My concern is that McCain wants to cancel the debate to deal with the financial crisis. Hello? Where has he been for the past 12 months? This is not new——this is a symptom of a much larger, long-term economic crisis. It’s fascinating that when homeowners make a bad decision and take on a loan they can’t afford, they are being foolish and irresponsible and get what they deserve, but when financial institutions do the same thing——and with other people’s money, no less——they get free money from the government, and the greedy CEOs get millions for all their fine work. Republican logic, I guess.
An even scarier thought: Can we really afford a president who can only handle one issue at a time?
237. Karen | 09.25.08
wow message 215, you are right, we do care, because these intelligent show hosts actually hit the nail on the head with the truth, and that is what hurts all of the republicans. They just cannot stand the truth, don’t want equal pay, shun the idea of anything that would take a penny out of their rich pockets or are just too stupid to understand anything unless some right winged evangelical bigot tells them to do so, so you get real. As to your comment “rest of their kind” do you mean the elitists? And while I am speaking about elitists, when did that become such a dirty word. We need elitists. I hope that the pilot who flies the next plane that I am a passenger is an elite pilot. I hope that the next president is a level-headed elitist, not prepared to bomb Iran if their pres. objects to the VP’s lipstick color…Cool your jets and understand this. McCain did NOTHING, zip, nada, nilch in the last eight years to prevent this Wall Street disaster….No-siree, he just sat back and took the cash baby, even from freddie lobbyists when they were on the way down

241. Gaias Child | 09.25.08
Anyone who saw McCain’s speech at Clinton Conference understands that the good senator did NOT suspend his campaign. He just gave a campaign speech at the world forum on global issues. Reminded us he’s a fighter pilot. I guess that matches up with caribou hunter wolf shooter beauty princess stonewaller mayor governor president dimwit. Right. I will not miss McCain on Friday at the debate. I will enjoy seeing Obama answer the questions. I am sure Regis would be much more entertaining than McCain. Who else could stand in. Sarah Palin? That would be hilarious. Bring it on. McCAin is making himself look opportuntistic, stupid and desparate but the thing is, I don’t think he gets it. I think he thinks he’s looking presidential. If he makes it, we’ll see Clinton at Secy of State. There’s been some promise made.
242. Bruna | 09.25.08
Letterman was correct to hold McCain/McLiar accountable for his persistent propensity to LIE. McCAIN is a total BULLSH** Artist WHO CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO TELL THE TRUTH. McCain trying anything to halt the meltdown of his campaign. McCain and his cronies are responsible for the crisis and the guy has the temerity to state otherwise. Furthermore, McCain has stated that he will install the architect of the Banking Meltdown Phil Gramm as his treasury Secretary. How stupid are American’s willing to be? When do we wake up and demand accountability from a Republican Administration that has basically destroyed this country in less than eight years. Lastly, the US Supreme court is also culpable in this mess. They installed GEORGE BUSH in 2000 and look at the results of his disastrous presidency. Bush McCain and Palin are all bottom feeders regarding their educational endeavors and it shows.

It appears that an agreement of some sort has been reached, and that the President is considering it as this is being written. Did McCain and his arguable”influence” in the Senate play any role in getting either Republicans or Democrats to co-operate? Hard to tell. One thing for sure, Obama’s demands to proceed in debating the issue, probably had even less effect than McCain suspending his campaign. If a deal is struck today, or early tomorrow, the debates should not have to be rescheduled. If that were the case however; I’d suggest that the Obama campaign will whine regardless. Its’ disappointing that Dave Lettermen seems to think so little of America’s voters that he chose to allow his ego and arrogance to be reflected in his comments. Dave, it wouldn’t have cost you anything to be polite and simply reschedule Senator McCain. Now, thanks to your petty little tantrum, even if Senator McCain were willing to do another show, there will be less viewers willing to watch. What is it about these celebrity morons that allows them to think they matter other than as an entertaining diversion?

But it looks like emotions are once again high in the ongoing culture war in America.
I was undecided until McCain picked Palin - his decision making process is a bit too dangerous for me. 8 years of “going with my gut” and “looking in the eyes of Putin and finding a soulmate” is really enough for me.

How can anyone not find this funny? If not you are totally disturbed or not breathing.

I recommend you announce this challenge to John McCain to set a shining example of morality and Country First to Wall Street CEO’s: donate one or more of his many homes to the government to help cover the bailout, and urge other Wall Street CEO’s to follow suit. Or they could offer to house foreclosure victims with free rent. Everyone is doing with less. So should wealthy politicians and Wall Street CEO’s. They all have more than enough savings to live on comfortably for at least a couple of years already. When other people are losing their first and only home, those with multiple homes shouldn’t hog them to themselves. Maybe wealthy women could donate some of their jewelry to the government also to help support the bailout. Fundamentalist Christian conservatives understand the principle of Loaves & Fishes: there is plenty there if those who have will share around. How about it, Senator McCain? You don’t even know how many homes you have, so donate one.

did you see Bill Clinton is backing his ‘older friend’ McCain now ?
I wonder if Hillary would join soon.

And that is why it is difficult for McCain to be president. See he is too very involved in day-to-day life. He might be good at it, No Boubt. But that’s what he is. If he is to be a president , then he should be able to manage and do all what he committed to do. Attending DL’s show even if it is a comedy is something McCain accepted. The whole issue is not he went to Washington DC. It is more that he was at the green room getting ready for another interview with a different person.
270. Anne | 09.25.08
Obama wants the debate because he doesn’t have to take time off from meetings on the crisis to prepare - he knows his ****. He can work on the crisis and still make it to the debate.
McCain can’t face Obama in a debate without serious cramming. He isn’t prepared and he knows it. This crisis is a convenient excuse to avoid a debate he didn’t want in the first place
That said, if Senator Obama votes “yes” on this bail out, I’m voting for Ralph Nader.
271. nat | 09.25.08
McCain delayed action on the “crisis” by his grandstanding. That has been acknowledegd by Republicans who have actually been working on a solution for the whole week. McCain is not on a committee that is responsible for sorting out this mess. That has nothing to do with Obama. I’ve supported McCain, but sometimes we have to be honest instead of being partisan.
America should be first, not party affiliation.

The Letterman show.
I wouldn’t watch it unless I was in a prison cell with my hands ties behind my behind back so I couldn’t get the remote?
I guess he was mad at John for missing his appointment.
Letterman get a life.

If it were NoBama that cancelled because of this crisis, David and the other Democrats would be kissing his feet! Give me a break. I think someone else above said it, it does not matter what McCain does, he would knock him down. Wake up people, NoBama is the antiChrist!

I’m proud of John McCain for responding to the call of duty. He will make a fine president. And has anyone thought that this debate is about foreign policy, and McCain will probably kick some serious Obama butt?

I do not know why people watch his show! He is not funny, nor is he cerebral.
Here are top ten reasons why he didnot have a childs earlier:
10 He could not even get a date.
9 Closest he ever came to a female was his cat.
8 Did not know how. He skipped the sex ed class in college.

2 He couldn’t.
1 Viagra was not invented earlier!

This is clearly another political ploy thought up by the McShame Campaign. McShame I guess thinks that he runs this election and whatever he says everyone should just do. Sorry buddy your boss Bush ruined it for you. I will never hang on a Government Officials word that voted in Favor of 98% of Bush’s bills and plans.
279. Cat | 09.25.08
You talk about beyond his prime? Letterman is not only no longer funny (and hasn’t been for years), he’s now becoming some grumpy old hack, a wholesale ***** for sneers instead of laughs. How many times has he bumped an act when his silly schtick ran over? And now some politician cancels on him and he goes phsycho. There is a lesson here for the poor man. Dude, LOOSEN UP! Dave’s failure at CBS has been a direct result of how important he’s thought himself to be. I couldn’t wait to see the NBC Dave, go to CBS and crush the prototype hack in Jay Leno. I thought, watch all Johnny’s viewers see what they’ve been missing if they did not stay up late. Man, what a disappointment. After the blowoff at NBC, Dave tighted up like a tick. I bet most of the people encouraging here on this thread don’t even watch him. NBC Dave was the best, CBS Dave blows and this situation encapsulates why he’s never taken Leno out, as easy as that could have been. I cringe whenever he tries to be funny. Now he thinks he’s Jon Stewart and it’s painful. Hopefully this will not be Conan’s fate when he moves up the time table.
280. Mark | 09.25.08
Who cares what letterman says. I want my government to work on saving us from a recession that could make the great depression look like a pinic. Letterman could care less whats happen, his selfish comments reflect those who have too much money and could care less whats happens to the U.S. economy.
281. Ed Weirdness | 09.25.08
My understanding was that the debate in Mississippi was going to focus on foreign policy. McCain not showing up to avoid a debate that is on an area of his greatest strength is not an argument most sane people would be making. Still, if a deal is struck on the crisis today or tomorrow, Senator McCain should make the debate, and the Obama campaign should stop whining. It isn’t surprising that a sitting president, albeit an unpopular one (curiously though, President bush’s approval ratings are still much higher than our Democrat controlled Congressional approval ratings) might ask both contenders for the office to meet with him and work to devlope a solution and sell it to their constituents.
282. justin smith | 09.25.08
McCain, who has missed nearly 65% of the Senate’s votes this year (Obama, 45%) has suddenly gotten serious about the domestic economy? He’s just too chicken**** to appear in front of the American peiople and tell us again that the “economy is fundamentally strong,” and to admit he hadn’t a clue how to guide us out of the meltdown. A vote for this loser is a vote for Bush’s third term. How do you like the fact that $2 million dollers a DAY supports the war in Iraq? That ain’t NOTHING compared to a $700 BILLION dollar bailout. And please note that the Bush administration OPPOSED the part of the bailout that would withhold bonuses from those CEOs whose companies would receive bailout money. So, as far at the Republicans are concerned, we working poor get to bail out the companies whose greed put us n the meltdown AND we get to personally and individually reward the SOBs who guidedtheir companies with such irresponsibility. Go ahead, vote for 4 more years of the same. Good move.
283. Flying Scotsman | 09.25.08
I greatly admire McCain for putting our country and his job first. Evidently, there are a lot of people out there that do not realize the real peril that the Americans are in, put there by our collective government and their collective ignorance and greed. I find nothing wrong with McCain canceling, and didn’t find Letterman’s jokes distasteful. They were his usual, hilarious, exaggerated observations. However, I found the media’s reported versions skewed as usual, with any mean-spirited bias that they can throw in, as usual. Good job McCain. Good job Letterman. The “media” should all be flatuated into space like the substance they represent.
284. Worng | 09.25.08
It’s hard to say whether McCain is doing this for the economy or for his campaign. It’s debatable.
However, what I find upsetting is that John was being interviewed by Katie Couric when he had a prior engagement with Letterman. If he is going to shaft letterman because he doesn’t think this is the time to be on a comedic show, then at least show some respect by not being on another show. If it was Capitol hill or any other place, then fine, but Katie Couric? Thats just wrong.
285. joanne | 09.25.08
Why is McCain so vital to the economic resolution being pieced together now? (Vital and McSame in the same sentence, hmmmm). Last week he thought the economy was sound, why would he know how to fix it if he didn’t notice it was broken? Besides, I thought George was THE DECIDER. Let McSame get to his real job, more lying and incompetence surely needs to get mavericked somewhere. Afraid to debate, more afraid to let Palin debate. Is an afraid old man who you want as president? Is that northern bimbeca interrupting the Roveian say anything campaign the Repubs thought they could win with? One half of the team says whatever they tell him to say and the other half frightens them by opening her mouth. My My! -respectfully submitted by a Mama for Obama
286. USA | 09.25.08
As CHAN said above … “Hope everyone takes good decision to resolve this crisis and US will be number 1 again…”
Right, because during the 8 years of Republican leadership, the US done a great job with foreign affairs, the handeling of natural disasters, jobs, healthcare, education and an economic crisis.
Great point there Chan.
287. HawkinCA | 09.25.08
If McCain thinks he can use this politically and ends up delaying this bill he will lose a large swath of the Republican party(everyone on Wall Street). He has nothing to contribute to this debate. This is McCain first, Country second. Stop playing politics and let the officials who have been working on this work it out. And besides, McCain has no understanding of economics to begin with. Also, Senator **** Shelby needs to step out of this. As a percentage of federal tax revenue, Alabama’s is nearly zero. This will barely affect his state so he should be irrelevant to this discussion.
288. Mark | 09.25.08
The worst possible financial crisis that the U.S. has faced in it’s entire existence and you think that one person can not make a difference? I would suggest to you that you should not vote ………your really not important in the process and would not influence the process what so ever. Instead, we should meet somewhere and discuss it.
289. nathan | 09.25.08
It is a political ploy. Now he can try to say “Look at me I put Country first” Come on we as an American whole are not stupid regardless as to what the Republicans would like to think.
McShame flip flops too much and just says what he thinks people want to hear. Just last week he is talking about how the Economy is Fundamentally strong and as of yesterday his VP puppet is saying that we are getting ready to hit a depression and McShame even made the comment that we could hit a depression by Monday.
This guy sniffed way to much napalm in vietnam and it is evident
290. Terrin | 09.25.08
McLame could have avoided the whole Dave situation by doing one thing. Namely, being honest with Dave and instead of lying to Dave and telling him he was on his way to the airport, try telling Dave the truth. You know something like, “Hey, Dave don’t be offended, but I am going to appear on Couric’s show instead of yours because I think it would be inappropriate to do a comedy show while the world markets are crashing [especially when the Republicans are to blame]. But, hey, I appreciate you letting me on your show all those other times, and I will make this up to you I promise.” I suspect being honest is tough for McLame though.
291. James | 09.25.08
ahhh yes … All of you highly intellectual liberals pieces of **** …. I can visualize it now, Osama, I mean Hussien Obama in the White House, and making all efforts to turn the United States into a socialistic country, watching your income being taxed more and more, in order to support the lazy as well as the illegal people. So you can applaud Letterman, it certainly fits well into your mental capacity. Buhahaha !
292. robhon | 09.25.08
I think everyone misses the strategic point of the McCain campaign wanting to cancel the first debate. If they miss the first debate they can then suggest that they use the scheduled VP debate for the first Presidential debate.
They DO NOT want Palin up there against Biden. Heck, never mind Biden, they don’t even want anyone asking a serious question of her. I mean, if she can’t sit in front of Katie Couric for a few minutes what’s she going to do in a full length debate with REAL questions and no script?
Honestly, I don’t mean anything against Palin as a person. I’m sure she has a great heart and is a great mother to her family. But she is just NOT an appropriate pick as a VP.
What I think the McCain campaign missed with her is that, she was indeed a Hail Mary pass. But the problem is, a Hail Mary only works in the very last second of the game. They threw their Hail Mary at the first seconds of the 4th quarter just to stay in the game. Now that she’s in the game she’s just not the player you want on the field.

I’m not usually a big Letterman fan, but last night’s show deserved an Emmy. Dave proved that under all that “aw shucks,” causal approach, lives a real professional with complete control and perfect timing. What a performance! Every gesture and nuance perfect. First he gave McC a big verbal hug (”real American hero”) then with a big smile and without a hint of anger he stuck in the knife and twisted, and twisted, and twisted. Wow. And I thought his decision about how to knife McC was brilliant: He didn’t once criticize any of McC’s policies — just kept repeating, “you don’t suspend a campaign — you go save the world and send your VP candidate to stand in for you.” Brilliant. Just say that, and let viewers draw their own conclusions.
Thanks Dave, you’ve got a new fan.

Letterman a ratings success? I don’t know where the Christian Science Monitor gets its statistics, but Letterman’s audience is puny even by late-night standards. One likely reason for this is that Letterman’s politics, and his taste in guests, skew so far to the Left as to exclude half of his potential audience. How far? So far, in fact, that he seems unable to treat conservatives politely on those relatively rare occasion when one (i.e., Bill O’Reilly) has appeared on his show. Notice that Hollywood celebrities associated with the political right almost never appear on his show. That’s because he’s too busy sucking up to execrable cretins like Michael Moore. And if you thinking “sucking up” exaggerates, you should tune in and see for yourself. If McCain wins, I predict Letterman won’t be around by the end of his term. The fact is, he’s not even funny, as anyone who watched him bomb on the Oscars could attest.
295. Ed Weirdness | 09.25.08
What part of Maveric are you having trouble understanding? Conservative Republicans have allways had a problem with McCain for numerous reasons. The same holds true with Independents. Truth be told, the majority of voters from both party’s wish we had another choice. Neither candidate represents the interests and concerns of the majority of America’s Citizens, and I daresay that the solution that Congress arrives at by concensus on this bailout, will not reflect the will of the people. Voters should focus on removing as many incumbents as possible, at every opportunity. By changing the balance of power and tenure in Congress, we can marginaliza the damage that either an Obama or a McCain presidency will cause, and take back control of our government from the long-term hacks and the self serving Congressional Elites and Power Brokers!
296. Jim R | 09.25.08
Obama wants to debate so he will look like he is able to handle talking about something from a distance.
John wants to do make sure we don’t get fooled again!
It’s hard for those opposing JM to think that, anyone would really care about this country more than what people think about them.
I know it hurts to care.
297. Phil | 09.25.08
Don’t be dissing Letterman now, if you like McCain. McCain has been on the show several times and used the publicity. Now he backs out of a committment at the last minute but is still in town with Couric. The childish name calling from both sides is a shame. Stop the smears. We all now know that Obama is a Christian and ask Republic Senator Hagel if Obama skipped out on visiting the troops in Germany. The way I hear it, he graciously backed out to avoid using the troops for publicity. We have recently seen the results of Republican deregulation, and McCain’s theatrics last week show he’s impulsive and, yes, waffling. Please explain: McCain brags about “country first” and how the country is more important than winning an election. So why did he pick Palin?
298. Candace | 09.25.08
The point is he lied - again! It is one thing to cancel and interview but be honest as to why. Also, congress was already hammering out an agreement and was close before he even arrived so the whole “needing to be in Washington” was just for show. Congress didn’t need him there. Besides, it is his past deregulation actions that have helped get us in this mess. Also, part of his “team” was still on the take up to a few weeks ago from Freddy and Fannie so you may be able to make yourself believe his actions are honorable but I don’t buy it.
299. Derek | 09.25.08
The Obama campaign want people to run around and say he is a Muslim…makes the far right look idiotic. Meanwhile we should all be focusing on the important issues. Like liberals created Fanni and Freddy. This failed system is a monument those policies.
WHo cares if he is a Muslim, that is fine…what bout all his shady associations with hoemgrown terrorit whats his name, his lies about that relationship, the house he got a deal on from the convicted real estate fellon, his lies about not having heard his pastor’s rants, his support for the pastor until it affected the polls…oh and he smokes (er until recently right?)…oh and he picked biden! This guy show’s terrible judgement all around, but gives a darn good speach.

So McCain didn’t come be on your show. Cry me a river.
301. gettyleigh | 09.25.08
why should dave the dumbazz care? he’s rich! you puppets og the media and hollywood would worship the devil if there was sock value in it. the reality is that McCain done the right thing. The only reason Obama didn’t want to be there was that if he votes “not present” again or doesn’t vote at all, like the war on Iraq, then he would not be held accountable wheter the bailout suceeds or fails. The fact is that Obama has set a precedent for doing this kind of stuff by voting not present 136 times; i thin he is spineless, and will kowtow to foreign leaders when the heat is on. Likewise, David Dumbazz Letterman, doesn’t care if the general public starves as long as his ratings are up. The republicans don’t support this bailout, because it borders on socialitic ideas. The only people that look like azzes in my opinion are Obama and Dave, who is his knees at Obama’s feet anyhow.

303. rashinal | 09.25.08
Disgusted, you are right .. but not really ..
“DO THE JOB HE WAS ELECTED TO DO”
your buddy john missed 64% of Senate Votes during the current and previous congress. not exactly “doing his job”, yet mocks Obama for being a no-show. Nor is his job being “economist of the day”, or to rush in and fix the mess that took eight years to make at a moments notice because suddenly, and without an inkling, it’s a major crisis !
And it must be solved NOW !! or the whole country will slip into a black hole ! (recognize the fear and urgency.. sound familiar?)
The folks that ARE handling the gop caused “crisis”, the experts.. stated quite clearly that Mccains presence was NOT needed and would be a distraction to the process.
Add to that .. he didn’t even really rush off to “try to prevent a financial meltdown” either.
Get real !
The real laugh is that he’s part of the CAUSE of the meltdown ! He’s been a champion of deregulation and a champion of the bush theories that have said, until a week ago, that the economy is “strong”. How can someone who didn’t even see it coming possibly offer any helpful input ?
really ..
GET REAL !
And finally, when you talk about “put a higher priority on a made for TV event”, the event in question is really the first presidential debate, an event that gives the voting public a chance to see the candidates a little clearer than the lying , smearing tv spots. It’s actually REALLY important.
A real leader leads. Dropping everything and rushing off the front lines is not leading… especially when you have soo little to offer !
So spare us the holier than thou , respect the senator ****.. He cries “let’s rise above politics” and then pulls this incredibly divisive political STUNT.

If you want to talk about what one is doing, talk about what both are doing.
He is really toooooo old to run this country and if he does it will be in a worst situation than is it now.
Answer this, why is it all of a sudden a crisis, when last week the country was still fundamentally strong, but now the country will fall down and not exist if this is not handled.
This is ridiculous. Do the debate he was the one asking for them, he must have thought that Obama would let him off and not care about it at all.

I laugh, at you guys, get my facts straight… #163, here they are from http://www.govtrack.us
Voting Record John McCain missed 738 (18%) of 4104 votes since Feb 4, 1993
Voting Record Barack Obama missed 306 (24%) of 1287 votes since Jan 6, 2005
I’m not even going to the IL state voting record, you wanna go there…
and no #182 I did not make up those numbers. They were as I heard on the morning radio and as also commented on by #179. Yes, polls, polls I take with a large amount of salt (& lime) and you should too! Polls can be spun in ANY direction - yes, the same polls that the Obama camp rely so heavily on. I’m also getting tired #179 of this constant Bush mess this - Bush mess that. Yes it IS/WAS a very bad administration and I am now waiting for someone to blame their ingrown toenail on him also!
How did all this start? Try with the “New Deal” Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 and its repeal by a bipartisan bill that in final revision, passed in the 1999 Senate by a bipartisan 90-8-1 vote and in the House by an equally bipartisan vote of 362-57-15. President Bill Clinton signed the veto-proof bill into law and the commercial earnings and deposits of banks became available to securities trading and investment bankers.

Seems like it would have been worth McCain’s 15 minutes to go do a quick segment with Dave, then depart to go “save” us from the economy.
Whether Letterman is relevant or not in the political arena doesn’t really matter when many of us are more interested in Dancing with the Stars and how many parking spots we can take up with our SUVs than we are with who becomes the leader of the free world; who appoints our Supreme Court justices; who sends our sons and daughters off to die over a bruised ego…
If McCain really wanted to help, he could list a few of his thirteen cars on craigslist and use the cash to help bail out his banking cronies…oh wait, he doesn’t know how to use a computer, let alone the internet. How do we justify electing a President in 2008 that doesn’t use email?!

315. apres_moi | 09.25.08
Here’s some background about yesterday that many either don’t know or have “conveniently” forgotten:
1. McCain lied to Obama. Obama said “I thought this was something he was mulling over. Apparently, this was something he was more decisive about in his own mind.”
2. McCain lied to Letterman. He could’ve had better judgement and told the truth to his supposed friend and said “Dave, I have to cancel because the media needs me to talk about this in a serious light. Can I reschedule on you?” or “Hey Dave, I’m at CBS studios about to talk to Katie Couric. Can we do a satellite feed for 5-10 minutes?”
Can you imagine McCain doing this to the presidents of China, Russia, or Georgia in an arms crisis?
Again, being presidential is being able to multitask many things at once. Clinton was able to handle the trials while running this country and dealing with important issues. McCain is showing that he can’t.

in response to 155. Disgusted and 188. robhon (and various others):
Of course, John McCain’s decision to “suspend his campaign” is political gamesmanship. There are just 40 days till the election: everything they do or say must contribute to the goal of winning that election. To believe anything else is just being naive. So in fact there is no such thing as suspending the campaign at this point. That doesn’t preclude his contributing to a solution to economic crisis - even John McCain can walk and chew gum at the same time.
But consider this: what exactly will he do in Washington, other than attend the meeting that Bush so conveniently called? (And, by the way, George, tell me again why you didn’t do this 10 days ago??) He is not a member of any of the committees (e.g., Banking) where the real hammering out of detail will be done. He might spend some time arm-twisting some of the die-hard, staunch conservative, anti-regulation Republican members of the House who could potentially kill this. But exactly how much credibility does Maverick John McCain have with these people - somewhere between “not much” and “none” is my guess. So maybe not such a good idea.
He can sit around having lunch with old friends. Moreover, as I think Obama realizes, the presence of the two candidates has enormous potential for politicizing anything they touch, anything they say - and the reporters would be following them around like paparrazi, pouncing on the smallest comment, hoping to get a scoop. Not exactly the atmosphere in which the most important economic legislation of the last (at least) fifty years needs to be made. Sure, John, make yourself available to whoever needs to get you involved. Phones work, videoconferencing works - you can provide all your input in a low-profile, thoughtful considered way. You won’t get as much publicity, and you will have to debate Obama as planned. But, hey John, country first.

I know several of our celebs today think they are the most important person on earth. Letterman, grow up. There are other problems more important than being on your show. For instance our economy, unemployment, and people without homes and food. Not that it matters but how many homes do you have?

McCain has missed something like 450 consecutive votes in the Senate. Now all of the sudden he has to rush back to Washington like some sainted messiah to save the world. News to John: There are leaders in Washington trying to get things done who probably dont need 2 presidential candidates mucking up the process with their campaigns.
Country first? Hah! This is about McCain’s ego and thinking he is irreplacable after abandoning his real job month’s ago.

I think a lot of people will be praying if their 401k’s disappear. If they lose their homes if they can’t feed their children. If they can’t find a job or a way to make money to support their families. People today think this can not happen they are wrong. They make jokes about serious matters. Wakeup call number one was 911, wakeup call number two is 925, wakeup call number three may be avoided if we repent like Ninevah did. These are just wakeup calls for God’s judgement on America. Obama nor McCain can save us from this judgement but we can if we repent today before it is too late. Turn around we are goin in the wrong direction.

323. Numberman | 09.25.08
McCain, not the first to cancel Letterman. Not the last.
Obama wouldn’t cancel any public meeting so that he can get exposure and opportunity to criticize McCain.
Talking about economy - a thing of the past.
Doing something about it - no way. Fight with McCain is by far more interesting
324. RealAmerican | 09.25.08
The sad thing is that this has shown McCain for what he is: power hungry and lacking in ethics. There is STILL hardly any mention of the background of his decision to try to cancel the debate. Obama called HIM, suggested they release a joint statement, decide together what they should do. Obama was going to have his campaign work with Mccain’s campaign on that joint statement. The next thing he knew, McCain is holding a press conference and acting like he is taking some high road, when in fact he just went back on what he and Obama had discussed. Clearly McCain is not a man of his word. He COULD have shown us that he wants to put aside the labels of Republican and Democrat, as he likes to say. But he has lost all sense of ethics. His choice of Palin and his attempt to delay the debate were brilliant strategic moves, but totally lacking any kind of moral judgment. I guess he really is that desperate to win.

I think the thing that most disturbs me is the unthinking dogma espoused by many of the opinions entered here. There are certain realities that those who blindly adhere to said dogma choose to ignore. I am saddened by the choices that our two major political parties have made to be their respective candidates. There is no question that Obama is a very smart man and despite his relative inexperience in serving in an executive leadership position, could potentially be an effective leader. There is no doubt that McCain’s experience gives him the same potential. There is also no doubt that either candidate will do whatever it takes to get elected. What is equally apparent is that each man is chained to his party dogma despite their desperate claims to the contrary. Blind adherence to party dogma does not speak change to me. I find it hard to believe intelligent men can truely espouse some of the extreme positions taken by both parties.
Both candidates have demonstrated their willingness to play loosely with the truth. Both candiates have shown more of an inclination to attack the opposing candidate than to produce concrete positions on the issues - besides the aforementioned party positions. Neither candidate inspires in me trust or confidence. I am terrified of either of them in the white house. And yet, this is the choice we have.
I would define myself as morally and fiscally a conservative, not republican. I would define myself as a consitutionlist, a firm supporter of the bill of rights - not a democrat. I believe in personal responsibility and accountability. I believe that there is a place for some social programs, but not all. I believe that the moral issues facing us in this country are not black and white. I believe in absolute equality under the law - not special teratment for special interest groups. So where is my candidate? Can’t we have even one with integrity and honesty?
So while we churn on this board over whether Letterman was out of line or whether McCain was disingenuous or who is the best candidate; while we make personal denigrating comments about other posters and spout party dogma and try desperately to prove that others are wrong I can’t help but wonder whether we have lost sight of what is truely important. We have a government out of control. We have businesses collapsing left and right. Our nation’s entire financial structure is poised to collapse. Jobs are disappearing by the thousands all around us. The moral fabric of our society is unraveling. Dignity, honesty and truthfuleness are no longer compelling personal characteristics. When do we come together in common pursuit of solutions? When do we put aside our personal “its all about me” thought processes and become focused on the common good? When do we re-learn how to really sacrifice? When do we fulfill our destiny as Americans? As humanitarians? It is my greatest fear that we, by not doing these things, are doomed to copy the Romans - to self destruct. If you look around carefully you will see that we are well on that path. It will be up to all of us - as individuals - to pull together and make this country work. The politicians will/can never do this for us. It is a fool’s dream to believe that they can.
Sorry I got so serious here, it was not my intent…but it took on a life of its own.
330. Robert Castle | 09.25.08
What ever afflicts McCain appears to be infectious. Many *RepubliCONs, particularly those aiding and abetting his candidacy, seem to be suffering from the same mental disease. Either they cannot distinguish fact from fiction or are congenital liars.
*The Republican party, the Grand Old Party, ceased to exist after Eisenhower cease to be President in 1961 when it came under the influence of the neoCONs and their CONmen. President Eisenhower predicted this would happen in his famous farewell address to the American people. I would also state that the Republicons are not worthy of the historic symbol of the GOP, the mighty and peaceful elephant. A more fitting symbol is the skull and crossbones, the historic emblem of piracy.
331. John J. Jee | 09.25.08
Jay, it’s not just honesty people are looking for in a candidate. They vote whatever they like. A good speach most likely as facts need to be understood first. A charismatic leader, not someone experienced. You need to have experience of your own to realize this.
Are we really votimg on charisma here? Is this what we really need?
It could be
332. andrew | 09.25.08
So, is Letterman saying the economy wasn’t in trouble? Why such a big deal out of it? I’ll bet he wouldn’t have bashed his lover Obama.
333. Richard N | 09.25.08
And the great work that McCain has accomplished on capital hill was to destroy the agreement between parties on the banking committees. Great leadership, inject presidential politics into delicate negotiations.

“9. Job | 09.25.08
Typical liberal “demohacks…” and this guy not even funny – the only thing funny about letterman are his rabbit teeth and stupid heheeheek laugh. Get a life, letterman, you old liberal **** – how’s that for a laugh. Invite your crony Obamma-bin-Biden to your bandwagon parade… no more CBS Red Fox for sure!”
You sir, are a complete conservative “republihack” so who are you to talk? David Letterman has always been funny, and your attempts to make fun of his appearance are immature at best.
For those who think McCain is really doing this for the country, I agree. McCain does have a job to do and he should go to Washington. However, he needs to be able to multitask as a president. Like Obama said, they have their own airplanes. He can make the debate as well as Washington.
The reason Letterman ripped McCain is because though he claimed to be going to Washington, he was really getting interviewed by CBS News. John McCain caught lying again. When will you conservatives catch on that the continuous stream of McCain lies is not a coincidence?
335. Monica | 09.25.08
McCain suckers, he LIED! McCain wasn’t “going back to work” to help anyone! He was doing an interview (or whatever) with Katie Couric! Probably to talk some scripted bull about the economy. He is a liar, and he’s running away from a debate, most likely to buy some time, or so Palin won’t have to debate Biden. Either way, the laughs were GREAT!
Take a joke, he would have done the same to Obama, I’m sure. Remember when Rosie trash talked Whitney Houston for canceling last minute? Take it EASY! Republicans… defensive bunch of people!
336. gatorman | 09.25.08
Jay #327 I think your post was one of the few sane comments on here.
I consider myself a conservative and I thought Letterman’s show was very funny. Anyone who is up in arms over the show took it way too seriously. McCain probably did what he thought was right, but the fact is that McCain is very impulsive.
I have read a lot of criticisms about both candidates. Many claim that these guys are doing whatever they can to get elected. That may be true. But who is really to blame here? Are the candidates to blame for doing whatever it takes to get elected? Maybe it’s the voters who are to blame for falling for these tricks in the campaign? Obama and McCain didn’t vote themselves into office.
Those of you who believe that this need for a $700 billion bailout is another Bush lie need to pick up the business section of the newspaper (any of them because they are all saying the same thing). Mortgage backed securities are clogging the economy. Banks and other lending institutions aren’t lending because of their losses on these mortgages. If the banks aren’t lending, businesses that depend on those loans go out of business and people loose jobs. Why do you think the news keeps reporting about unemployment going up? You may not have seen the effects yet, but if things keep going like this, you will. If you don’t believe Bush, then don’t listen to him. Listen to Paulson, Bernanke, or even Warren Buffet…actual financial and economical experts that say we need this bailout.
Lastly, to those of you angry with Wall Street over this financial mess, you should consider that they aren’t the only ones at fault here. The homeowners that couldn’t afford these loans should have known better. The banks that issued the loans should have known better. The investors that bought up these loans should have checked to make sure they were worth the paper they were printed on. EVERYONE screwed up.
337. Jeff Hodge | 09.25.08
Sometimes Letterman is funny and sometimes he is not. I saw McCain suspend his campaign and thought maybe we were being attacked by the Russians?! This serious financial mess has been building for a long time. Spending 700 billion dollars on a last minute scheme is just not something our country should do. The debate should go on. ****, there should be more debates and include the top five candidates. I am not talking about the VP candidates. Has anyone heard of any of the other parties? I didn’t think so. You people who blatantly lie are disgusting. I sure hope that this last minute bailout does not pass.Jay 327 good post.
338. Bob Dobbs | 09.25.08
How’s THIS for dogma: Republicans are, for the most part, either greedy/narcissistic, ignorant of the issues [read: stupid], or just plain lovers of war and destruction. McSame will be more of THE SAME…. I’m glad Dave illuminated his failings.
339. Lillian Townsend | 09.25.08
Letterman was classic entertainment!
His best point is why isn’t McCain willing to have Palin carry on the campaign while he’s in Washington. If he feels that he’s choosen the most qualified person for his VP, wouldn’t that be the correct decision. What will he do if there is a crisis as President ~ like he’s hospitalized for cancer ~ call in Cheney to cover for him?
340. Lillian Townsend | 09.25.08
McCain may be making a big deal about going to Washington in order to have the debate postponed so that it will have to be on Wednesday when the VP debate is scheduled. There’s only ONE VP debate. Wouldn’t it be to McCain’s advantage and dropping polls to NOT have Palin debate Biden. Or to have it postponed so that Palin can have more time to prepare for a debate that she is obviously “un-qualified” to have?
341. Uh Huh | 09.25.08
He lied.
Why lie? he had to know he’d look bad if it came out…
If he didn’t know he’d get caught he is very naive about the entertainment community.
The country has been in a crisis for a very long time. The debate was a time for the voters to see the candidates log in on the crisis.
It’s all posturing and juvenile posturing at that!
342. Tracey | 09.25.08
I saw the show and it was funny as **** because Letterman was mocking the truth. That’s always the best humor. McCain is being a ridiculous drama queen. That’s just what we need for a president…someone who consistently overreacts to everything to make himself seem way more important than he actually is, and then has to backpedal when reality hits. What a fool. As an American, it’s embarrassing.
343. El Mugroso | 09.25.08
HIDING Sarah, HIDING McCain the war hero?
A hero who claims to “know how to win wars?”
How many has he won?
If S.P. was a “good choice”, why are they hiding her?
If “God” chose her, what’s the fear all about?
344. JMcIntosh | 09.25.08
Ok Democrats — when the country’s financial system crashes and burns because of a lack of servant leadership from those who happen to sit in the majority currently, I hope you remember:
1. You thought Letterman was funny
2. You should have listened to McCain and the Executive branch on this one…and
3. you are not as bright and elite as you think you are.
McCain at least would rather loose an election than a war (or financial stability). Seems to me the Dems are willing to put the nation at risk to string out and intensify a crisis so they can come to the rescue just in time (if they don’t overestimate how much time they have) so they can win an election.
Just when I think I can’t be amazed by how uninformed and irrational some folks are… Wow - herd mentality - gotta love it.
345. steve | 09.25.08
Forget if you are Dem or Rep….the fact is McCain lied to Letterman. Why didn’t McCain just say to Letterman, “I don’t think me appearing on your show is appropriate because of the crisis we are in”. Why didn’t McCain try the truth instead of lying that he had to catch a plane to rush to Washington. Twenty-two hours later McCain catches his plane that took an hour and half to get to DC. Just like the debate…what is going to be going on at 9pm eastern time on the Hill that would keep McCain from attending the Debate.
It is the lies, not the fact he didn’t show up on Letterman, that is so astounding. I want a President who doesn’t lie to make policy — Bush did it to get us in a war — McCain seems to have a good start.
346. Kathleen | 09.25.08
I love my country. I am for McCain. Letterman chill-out and all of you who are enjoying him, take the time to read about what is really happening in the financial crisis…..In fact, why not take the 90 minutes of Letterman couch potato time and educate yourself.
347. Dreamer | 09.25.08
Everyone has the right to their opinion.
Based on all that’s happening around us, isn’t time we stop the name calling, and the spreading of unsubstantiated rumors?
If you are truly interested in the future of the country and the legacy we will be leaving our children, it’s time to remove the blinders and deal with the issues at hand. Race.
We keep sweeping the real issue under the carpet and start calling names. However the racial issues in America will not disappear until we openly and honestly discuss this issue.
If Obama with the very same qualifications he has now, with the same records he has now , was Causcian and named Smith he would have no problem winning this election.
It’s time to take our necks out of the sand and address the issue of race and then we may start the healing in this wonderful country of opportunity.
348. AC | 09.26.08
Kudos to Letterman, he has every right to vent—bad advising McCain. The presidential debate SHOULD GO ON crisis or no crisis. Readers need to read the FACTS—millions have been spent in organizing this debate and congress has a committee that is reviewing the economy issue—having McCain there isnt going to do anything????

Hey you apologists - you don’t get it. Dave wasn’t angry because McCain cancelled, he was upset because McCain LIED to him. He CALLED him and said that he couldn’t come on his show because he had to get on a plane to Washington “at once”. He could have been honest and explained why he didn’t think it was appropriate to go on a talk show. But he lied about it. Do you REALLY want to elect a man that CASUALLY LIES to his friends?

We take this election too serious…it really does not matter who get in the white house…unless you have the money to pay for a night in the White House, you get ****. Take your pick.
Politics equals power, the more hand-outs to constituents, the more votes one gets- the more votes, the more power. The more power the more they can take from you. Why would any one of these guys- Dem or Rep behave any differently? The only difference is in the language.
In a few elections, it would be hard to tell the difference between once great US and France.
Wake up!
353. SRQsam | 09.26.08
At first, I thought McCain had his priorities right by focusing his presence and influence to the financial crisis. But all reports said he offered no leadership, ideas or support for any initiatives at the bailout summit. In fact, he was virtually silent the entire meeting.
Sadly, it reminds one of a immobile, mute president sitting in a Florida school throughout the infamous events of 9/11.

Letterman’s feathers were ruffled because he missed his chance to insult McCain in person. When Obama was on his show Dave talked to him about helping those victims of the hurricane in Haiti which I believe there is a great need. But do your homework, Dave on the devastation Hurricane Gustav left for the parishes of SE Louisiana, and even worst hurricane Ike’s reign over Texas and LA. I’m fed up with this election. Will the real leader, please stand up! But that’s another game show.

Everyone of you liberal, democrat wonks and I mean EVERY ONE of you, would have been all over McCain’s case first thing this AM had he done Letterman. How could he possibly be joking around on a late-night comedy show when the nation is facing its most dire financial crisis in history?!!! C’mon - admit it!!
To defend Letterman is to support someone you maaaaaaay not want to be associated with. He’s an on-air clown without the shoes and nose - a professional C-O-M-E-D-I-A-N, for God’s sake!! And lately, he’s either forgotten how to be funny or just decided to go off the reservation and replace his schtick with his politics.
Buy a vowel, people: We don’t need to think about Letterman and politics. He’s nothing to this topic, got it? Nothing. He has no demonstrable prowess on public policy matters - he’s just a big, spoiled, arrogant, self-absorbed and rude baby who treats people poorly and has for years. Ever been a guest on his show, huh, have you? And here’s another question for you: Have you ever been a guest who traveled to New York and was cancelled while backstage and Letterman was no where to be found to apologize in person?
Seems like the big doofus is getting a taste of his own medicine.

McCain is losing it. He is tapped out. He has been having a tough time zeroing in on a clear message. In part this is because he has changed his message so often - he likes to copy what Obama says - and in part it is because he does seem a bit confused at times. Every time he tries to make a spontaneous remark - he puts his foot in his mouth so no more reporters on his bus. The numerous times McCain has fumbled or mumbled himself into a corner over these past many weeks is alarming- a week ago the economy was fundamentally sound for McCain. We saw a lot of these signs in Ronald Reagan when he needed extra help from his wife. Furthermore, in his flailing attempts to regain momentum, McCain is making a mockery of this election. His “debate is off/now its on” stunt and his choice of Palin, who failed the Couric interview, are proof positive of McCain’s shoot-from-the-hip lack of judgment. We must reject the McCain/Palin ticket as a matter of nation security if nothing else.
361. Dan from Massachusetts | 09.26.08
First and foremost, David Letterman is an overgrown child! Neither he nor jay Leno are willing to **** when interviewing a guest. Like so many baby bommers, Dave can’t comprehend that the entire show is not all about him. It’s about his guests and him. The give and take that should be going on is called… a conversation! Johnny Carson was the ultimate gentleman and the utlimate comedic “straight man”. Neither Letterman nor Leno are worthy nor capable of carrying Carson’s proverbial tv “jock strap”. All Mr. Letterman can do is interrupt his guests and make fun of people at their expense. You tell jokes for a living Mr. Letterman. You’re paid millions of dollars a year to do this and in the end you’re just not all that funny. TV ratings back this up.
In regard to McCain going to D.C. to assist with the bailout, I don’t know whether it was a good decision or not. Thank God he has decided to debate Obama. The only way this turns out o.k. for Obama is if he is given the questions before the debate. The man simply can’t think on his feet. His nickname should be “Teleprompter Barry”.
The question that I keep coming to is in what way is Barack Obama qualified to be the President of the United States? I know he’s a US Senator and I also know that after his 143 day in that office he started running for the presidency. Do you know that you can’t become a Manager at McDonalds in less than 143 days on the job? You have got to be kidding me! I guess being a Community Organizer is job training enough for Democrats.
I find it incredible that anyone can be critical of Sarah Palin and her “lack of experince” when she has held not 1 but 2 executive positions where the buck has stopped with her. She has had to make decisions and live with them. Barack usually votes present when he’s in town. He has no record and therefore can’t be critized. I find it extremely telling of uber liberals that they prefer Obama not only over Palin but over Hillary Clinton as well. Sounds rather narrow minded and sexist if you ask me.
Hear is what the American people like to hear from their candidates. “We need change in Washington. Americans are tired of working harder for less. There is a disconnect from those in Washington and the American people. These politicians just don’t get it. We are going to keep jobs here! We are going to grow jobs here. There will be healthcare for everyone and opportunity for all Americans. We are going to pursue free trade agreements that account for good labor and environmental standards. I would ask Mr. Obama how is he going to pay for all this when he’s vowed to cut taxes? How is he going to keep jobs here when items can be manufactured and shipped here at a much cheaper price? How is he going to force China, India, and other countries to instill the same work safety standards and enviromental production standards that we have? He can’t its all b*#@sh*& with a little ketchup but eat up and enjoy.

crisis my a$$
this is a stunt to help wallstreet
and get mccain elected..
SO bush is forcing obama and the democrats to fix the crisis with the bailout
so fiscal conservatives will join mccain even if he has to run the whitehouse from a nursing home. SO mccain all of a sudden is not in favor of the bailout in its current form he and obama had agreed on some of the priciples of the bailout. Now Alabama senator shelby has his own idea to fix the economy something about a insurance package that corporations to buy from goverment seeems far fetched and bush and paulson and co said that wouldnt work. wHAT I THINK IS GOING TO HAPPEN MCCAIN WILL GO AGAinst THIS BAILOUT NO MATTER WHAT THEY ATTAtch TO IT. he will agree to the shelby proposal and say the 700 billion dollar is too much pork for america to swallow this is what small country wants to hear if obama votes for bailout he is toast.
This is why nancy pelosi said not so fast if you want us to bailout wallstreet then get your side of the votes on the republican side.
The republicans are praying for the bailout for many reasons but they only want the dems to pass it

For those of you who think McCain needed to be in Washington last week - WRONG! He’s not part of any committee working on the bill. But for those of you who still think he needed to go, are you all handicapped as well? After all, that was the arguement that recently appeared in the Phoenix Republic as to why he can’t use email or the internet. Yep, seems the writer feels that since he can’t raise his arms over his head, he can’t type or use other electronic media/devices. Maybe he can’t dial a phone either. Hope you’ve read the numerous reports that once he got there, he didn’t do anything but sit in his office and make phone calls. Hmmm…maybe he doesn’t know how to dial long distance!

Someone talk some sense into that old man!

I don’t think Dave got his feelings hurt initially.. not until after he found out that McCain was at another interview for the SAME network, not running off to the airport to deal with the economic crisis. HELLO!!! What kind of brain damage is that.. like Dave wouldn’t find out about the interview? Like lying is okay under ANY circumstances?( Especially when he wants to lead our country) Not to mention that McCain has known Dave for years and he breached his trust in a very public and humiliating way. He bold face LIED to Dave and to the american public when telling the truth would have been just as easy. Now he looks like a liar and an IDIOT. Don’t you think that any one of us would feel offended? McCain got what he deserved. Had he shown any decency and honesty when he canceled the interview, He would still have the value and respect of a friend and the american people. Now he has neither because of his own dishonesty. I certainly wouldn’t want someone in office who can’t own up to a decisions and actions.

I have to admit I have always liked watching David Letterman going way back when he jumped on the wall with the velcro suit, but in the past few weeks he has changed my opinion permanently. The “great moments in presidential speeches” never bothered me (I thought it was one of the funniest skits on the show) but his past comments and his nastiness veiled by “humor” is not funny to me. It is amazing in such a short time I see a person I used to like to someone I can not stand watching. If they cancelled his show (which I am sure would not be immediate), it would not bother me. He has lost this once very loyal viewer.

That was a great wrap-up.. McCain is showing his age, too many ‘gimmicks’ the worst being Palin.
