McCain, Palin, Letterman and SNL - what a week

By Jimmy Orr | 09.28.08

What a week in politics. A suspended campaign, a call for the debate to be postponed, a resumed campaign, a calamitous television interview, a call for the debate to be un-postponed, and lots and lots of comedy — all at the expense of the Republican ticket.

Last night was the latest chapter in a wild week.

Cringe

Sarah Palin’s real life interview with Katie Couric was not well-received. Disastrous, cringe-inducing, awful, and unflattering were all words used to describe the one-on-one.

So bad was the interview, Republican strategists were calling for McCain to resume his campaign and hold the debate simply to get the Couric interview off the air.

One conservative columnist called for Palin to remove herself from the ticket stating that the Alaska Governor was “clearly out her league.” And a FOX News commentator agreed with the “out of her league” assessment stating, ““I hate to say it, but she may be right.”

The interview, however, provided a goldmine for comedy writers.

Sarah and Katie

A parody of Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live two weeks ago was well-received by the Republican vice presidential nominee, according to her press secretary. It would be hard to imagine she felt the same about last night’s treatment.

Alaska’s proximity to Russia and why that emboldens Palin’s foreign policy credentials happened in the real Palin and Couric interview as we discussed earlier. The SNL writers thought that was pretty good material.

Russians hanging around

So they took Amy Poehler, who impersonated Hillary Clinton in the earlier skit, but this time had Poehler imitate Couric in what they called the “fourth installment” of the interview series.

“You got Alaska here, this right here is water, and this is Russia,” Palin (Fey) explained using her hands to assist. “So, we keep an eye on them. Every morning, when Alaskans wake up, one of the first things they do, is look outside to see if there are any Russians hanging around. And if there are, you gotta go up to them and ask, ‘What are you doing here?’ and if they can’t give you a good reason, it’s our responsibility to say, you know, ‘Shoo! Get back over there!”’

Lifeline please?

It would have been a missed opportunity had the writers not lampooned the “I’ll get back to ya’” gaffe that the real-life Palin used when Couric stumped her. They played that line when discussing foreign policy.

COURIC: “What lessons have you learned from Iraq and how specifically, would you spread democracy abroad?”

PALIN: “Specifically, we would make every effort possible to spread democracy abroad to those who want it.”

COURIC: “Yes, but specifically what would you do?”

PALIN: “We’re gonna promote freedom. Usher in democratic values and ideals. And fight terror-loving terrorists.”

COURIC: “But again, and not to belabor the point. One specific thing.”

PALIN: “Katie, I’d like to use one of my lifelines.”

COURIC: “I’m sorry?”

PALIN: “I want to phone a friend.”

COURIC: “You don’t have any lifelines.”

PALIN: “Well in that case I’m gonna just have to get back to ya’”

Wondering if Palin might call for a suspension of her campaign next week to work on a legislastive issue? If so, she should make sure she’s not scheduled for the David Letterman show. He’s already got enough material.

Cancel Letterman - stat!

The comedy-drama all started on Wednesday when McCain suspended his campaign in order to fly to Washington to work on the financial bailout - something that was criticized as a stunt, ploy, shenanigan or insert similar-meaning word.

But pundits also likened the move to vintage John McCain - someone who will throw the dice when necessary to shake things up - which it did.

It got most everyone talking about the strategy tactic rather than the downward slipping of polls, his running mate’s disastrous interview with Katie Couric and his campaign manager’s seeming inextricable links to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Make ‘em laugh

The key words in the above paragraph is almost everyone. The people who did take note could have more sway than the omnipresent Wolf Blitzer or Keith Olbermann. People tune in to David Letterman and Saturday Night Live to laugh - not that Wolf isn’t funny or anything.

But, to our knowledge, Gallup hasn’t conducted such a poll yet - but we’d be willing to bet that Letterman and SNL would have higher favorable ratings than Blitzer and Olbermann.

Letterman strikes back

The Republican nominee was supposed to appear on Letterman’s show Wednesday night. This is something McCain has done many times before. This was supposed to be his 12th appearance, in fact.

It was the timing of it all that got Dave steamed. A last minute cancellation ensued and Letterman said the reason provided was that McCain had to fly to Washington to work on the financial bailout package.

“This doesn’t smell right,” Letterman ranted to the audience. “This isn’t the way a tested hero behaves.”

“I think someone’s putting something in his metamucil,” he groused.

He’s still here?

What really irked him was the tip that McCain was still in town. He, in fact, was getting prepped to do an interview with CBS News anchor Katie Couric. Letterman was able to wrangle the internal video news feed showing McCain getting prepped by a makeup artist and display it live for the audience.

“He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport, does he?” Letterman asked before shouting at the monitor: “Hey John, I got a question! You need a ride to the airport?”

Night two

It wasn’t going to end with just one night of mockery. The following night Letterman continued his rant. What was ironic is that one of the people the McCain team targeted to label Barack Obama as an airhead celebrity was his guest Thursday night - Paris Hilton.

“You’re here on a good night,” Letterman said to the audience. “So far none of our guests have canceled.”

“Paris Hilton is on the program tonight,” he announced. “Unless she needs to rush to Washington to fix the economy.”

On the topic of stuntman David Blaine who was hanging upside down in Central Park for 60 hours, Letterman quipped, “They just left the guy hanging there. It’s the same thing McCain did to me last night.”

Next week

As for this upcoming week, one would imagine Letterman’s not going to just drop this and of course the SNL writers will be watching Thursday night with much anticipation.

In terms of the debate, one Republican strategist isn’t worried. He instead sounds a bit like John Elway right before he marched his team downfield in the legendary football sequence called “The Drive.”

Elway told his teammates before the miracle 98 yard drive to win the game, “We’ve got ‘em right where we want ‘em.” GOP strategist Todd Harris must have been taking notes.

“I think expectations for Palin will be so low on Thursday that it will be difficult for her not to meet them,” Harris told The Vote. “And debate performances are not graded in a vacuum. It’s not just how she does, but also how Biden does and how he acts towards her, that makes for the ultimate grade. She could stumble through the entire evening, but if Biden talks down to her, the debate will be a draw.”

Palin had one bad interview…Biden has been an embarassment to the state of Delaware for YEARS! Better Palin to err on the safe side of saying not enough than for Biden to shoot off his mouth and get us in trouble if he is elected VP. Words should be spoken carefully and wisely…I think that is what Palin is practicing.

2. mj | 09.28.08

Does she know what to do with the keys to the nuclears arsenal? She’s a heart beat away from being in the drivers seat. Someone ought to tell her this is not a game.

3. Ben | 09.28.08

LOL. Poor Sarah, she looks so pathetic.

Poor us if that loon gets elected to the 72 year-old, skin cancer ridden heartbeat away from the presidency.

4. Ron | 09.28.08

It would be amazing if Biden only gives one word answers so that Palin couldn’t feed off his answers and she ends up chocking herself.

5. Ron | 09.28.08

Hey CB where have you been….? Palin has had 2 disastrous interviews…. Try and imagine if there was a choice between Palin stepping in as President or Biden stepping in…..With Palin, you had better start learning how to speak
Russian.

6. Paul | 09.28.08

While all politicians lie, the degree of lying that McCain has done this past couple of weeks is nearly insurmountable. If he hadn’t liked to Letterman the way he did, McCain may not have received the trouncing he did.

Palin is not equipped to be VP. Another testament to McCain’s poor temperament and rash judgment. America has been tested by too many serious crises (some of our own government’s making, some not). Do we trust McCain, or worse Palin, to helm the country during one of these? I don’t.

7. Russ | 09.28.08

Hey, give John and Sarah a break. After all, in their own words (almost) they are.. two wild and crazy mavericks!

8. Anthony | 09.28.08

Palin is so bad and the expectations are so low that as long as she doesn’t drool on the podium she’ll win the debate.

9. Michael Philip | 09.28.08

Looking forward to some serious bush once Sarah takes Hugh’s money.

10. Scott | 09.28.08

The real issue is not that Palin can’t interview for ****, it’s that they are hiding her from most of the media. Bush sounded stupid the whole campaign. Remember all those ‘Bushisms’? No one really cared.

Americans are fine with someone sounding sounding stupid in public, but hiding her makes it looks like not even the Republicans think well of her.

11. Aleks | 09.28.08

““I think expectations for Palin will be so low on Thursday that it will be difficult for her not to meet them,” Harris said. “And debate performances are not graded in a vacuum. It’s not just how she does, but also how Biden does and how he acts towards her, that makes for the ultimate grade. She could stumble through the entire evening, but if Biden talks down to her, the debate will be a draw.””

There you have it, Team McCain’s strategy to win the election. Pick someone so incredibly incompetent and unqualified that people can’t possibly avoid patronizing her, and then call them on it. Oh, and if a 72 year old man with multiple cancers in his history becomes incapacitated, she becomes president.

12. Den Gran | 09.28.08

Come on, people. CB knows Palin is a living, walking, talking Barbie-joke, just like the rest of us Americans that saw the interview. Wishing something away won’t work. Pandora’s box has been opened and we all see the real Sarah Palin and we are unimpressed. And as much as you’d like to think otherwise, you’re not going to change any thinking person’s opinions with such a laughable defense. Until Sarah Palin started talking, I was really worried about a McCain presidency. Now I’m only casually worried because there are so many people who are led so easily by the conservative propaganda machine. I have to say I do love watching the extreme right trying to salvage what they can from this disaster. If Palin’s daughter has a wedding in the next three weeks or so, I wonder how many Americans would vote McCain/Palin just because they like weddings…. Many Americans are dumb enough to do just that. Scary times, my thinking friends.

13. Michele Viteillo | 09.28.08

What I find so funny is not the good Governor, its the fools who try to spin her. She is way over her head, lord it took her five colleges to get a simple degree! Moose Burgers anyone?

14. Greg | 09.28.08

Wait a minute. It sounds as though the Republican strategy is to concede that Palin will lose the actual debate, but that “bad Mr. Biden” better not be mean to their lil’ darlin. What a load of ****. It’s unbelievable how the GOP can redirect the public’s attention from actual issues by focusing on meaningless drivel such as the whole “lipstick on a pig” nonsense before. So in a sense, it seems to me that what Republicans are saying is, “Hey, we know she’s not the sharpest tack, but you just shouldn’t be able to SAY she’s not the sharpest tack.” Seriously, the way the Republicans have run their last three campaigns on diverting attention away from serious national issues and towards a meaningless sideshow has been nothing short of genius. McCain has no business even being close in this race, but with the way the GOP runs a national campaign, it is pretty scary to think that he very well may win…even with the most severely unqualified VP candidate ever. I can actually hear Dan Quayle’s prayers for Palin to get in to the White House, if not only so that he would no longer be considered by most people to be the biggest fool sit in VP chair.

15. hawthorn | 09.28.08

Let’s leave the name calling and partisan slogans out of it for a few minutes. I’m an independent who came into this prepared to vote for the best candidate(s). Now I’m asking myself - if Sarah Palin isn’t objectively unqualified to be on the national ticket, then how could ANYBODY be unqualified? It’s got nothing to do with her “positions” on the issues, if she actually has any… she could have politics I strongly oppose, and it might make me vote against her, but that wouldn’t make me question her *place* on the ballot.

Nor does it have to do all that much with her paper resume of achievements - Barack Obama is relatively inexperienced as well. But all you have to do is listen to him for 5-10 minutes and you quickly realize that if he’s elected, you might not agree with all his policies, but he’d be, you know, an actual President. In charge, and smart enough, and stuff. Same for McCain; same for Biden; same, if it had gone that way, for Hillary. But a President Palin would be utterly at the mercy of whatever holdover staff she inherited from McCain. At worst, she would feel her Constitutional oats and make her own moves. None of which would matter if she were a latent genius President in the rough like Harry Truman. But we would know it by now. You would be able to see it. I don’t think it’s there.

This choice reminds me of the Harriet Mears debacle - a Supreme Court nomination so blatantly unqualified that a bipartisan rebellion led to her withdrawal. The difference now is that the GOP knows it cannot drop Palin without conceding the election. Perhaps they are conceding this round anyway barring a McCain miracle or an Obama self-destruct. Based on what we’ve seen from them so far, I doubt either man will oblige.

16. willy | 09.28.08

Mccain lies Obama doesn’t.. Obama just got caught lying in his Spanish ad.Thinking most of us don’t know Spanish but abc and others caught him.But he doesn’t lie.He was raised a Muslin for many years there is prof but he says he wasn’t His family even says he was. Obama doesn’t lie.He even said it in a book he wrote from what i hear.He says more or less it was him who brought this bill together..hmm thought it was congress he was on the road but he is taking credit for a lot of it Mccain isn’t. Obama He’s like a little kid i want credit i want credit me me.Why is he not using his adopted name his legal name? There is no prof anyone can find of him changing to Obama.Go look it up not one news person can find anything on it.Why did it take him 20 years to leave his church. A church that promotes hate. You don’t think he took a little of that hate with him. 20 years of being told to hate. give me a brake. If he wasn’t running for president he would still be there. He voted against money for the military and said we need to get out because we would never do good there. now he says we have done good. he can’t make up his own mind how can we let him tell us whats good for us?Mccain might be the best choice but he is really our only choice.

17. Paul Stewart | 09.28.08

Pathetic Palin. Brilliant Biden. The advice for Biden to ignore her is the right one. It might be hard for him to keep a straight face though if she goes no like she has in the interviews.

I think the right wing is out of ammunition. And they are still sitting on this toxic waste moose hunting time bomb. The fun is just beginning. Now, you will see more of the extreme generic idiocy of the right.

The liberals and the media are ignoring reality. The polls are rigged against McCain by the lying media and liberals. Palin will save McCain. Obama is pretending to be Jesus (right, in your dreams), Obama is a socialist or a Marxist (right, where did that come from - have you seen his books, heard his views?) Obama is a Muslim, a black, a religious freak related to Reverend Wright, naive, elitist, etc etc.. All that has been tried and it works for the remaining right wingers who will vote McCain regardless of how foolish that is. You know, the people with money, with power, who want to hang on to it. The K3 types, etc..

I feel that now that people will be able to see Obama side by side with McCain and see how they look and how they present their points, they will see what I see, on one hand a mean mouthed, beady eyed, old white man, who can’t look a black man, or his perhaps even just his opponent, in the eye. A man who wants to condescend to his opponent, and lecture him on things he clearly already has a good grip and perhaps even a broader and better perspective on. A man that wants to believe the lies he has created on his “Lying with a Straight Face Express”. A man who will co-opt his opponents ideas and positions and who can’t see the forest for the trees, misunderstanding tactics and strategy. A man who is so wealthy that he can’t recall how many homes he has, who did not mention the middle class once, and seems to think the average American is a multinational company.

On the other hand, we see a man who is calm, smiling in the face of most criticism. A man who nonetheless is getting a bit riled and who you would not want to be on the wrong side of if you seriously wronged him. A man who has great confidence in himself, and in his understanding of the issues and where he wants to strategically take America - back to the people. A man who can, in a widely viewed debate, confidently state he agrees with parts of what his opponent, who is treating him poorly and lying about him, is saying. He does this for example on the issue of torture, where McCain is obviously right. He does it where he in fact is in agreement. It takes a big man, not just a leader, but a strong leader, to do that and especially in the middle of a debate in an election. A man who has the experience and the ability to reach across the aisle, no make that across the divide in politics, across the racial divide too (he has lived it and from the more challenging side of the fence), and across the cultural and physical borders (he has lived that too) and across class lines (again, he lived that growing up without, yet through ability, scholarships and perhaps some luck, getting into schools for the more well to do).

I think things are getting clearer. This is going to be closer than it should be because of broken political morals. In the end though, it will be a solid win for Obama. I think people should think hard about this, and make it a big win for Obama, to give him a mandate for new morals in politics and to reinforce the United in the United States.

18. JustAGurlChicago | 09.28.08

Yes, I agree. Biden needs to attack McCain and assert why he and Obama are the most qualified for P/VP. He needs to ignore Palin, but in a courteous way. When she interrupts him, he needs to keep his cool like Barack did with McCain. Everyone needs to remember why Gore lost the election and why Howard Dean lost the nomination. Neither kept cool, and both looked like sore losers. Besides, who knows if Palin’s resignation might be calling….

The Palin ticket is one maverick move, McCain will regret if he has not already. Too bad. I feel bad for Sarah, she just does not know her own limitations and should have said no to this opportunity.

19. houtex | 09.28.08

Think what if the 700 billion does not unfreeze the credit markets? What if credit eases but falls far short of expectations? Jobs are lost prices rising and wages stagnating so how many more on the brink of default fall over the cliff?

Small businesses look at the scene and see only 100,000 USD in FDIC insurance and begin a flight to safety with their cash putting my pressures on bank capital. The recession will follow no matter how well the bailout money is managed. What then Sarah? More tax cuts for the wealthy? More corporate tax breaks? Less not more reform of the system? Think about global warming?

20. kevin | 09.28.08

McCain is our only choice?! Are you ****ing serious?! Yeah right, we’ll see! If he wins (and he won’t), you will see the kind of domestic meltdown you usually only see in post-apocalyptic movies like “Mad Max” or “Blade Runner”. As anyone can see, the Karl Rove tactics don’t even work for McCain! And they got Bush “re”-elected (the quotes denoting that he didn’t ever win in the first place.) Nice try, but y’alls day is over. Moving on…

21. jack | 09.28.08

Palin: media why is it so hard for you to believe I cant run for VP?

Media: because Obama said so and your from Alaska for Pete sake.

Palin: Why are you backing Obama you really think he can lead?

Media: Hes a dem we needs dems they are the only ones who really know us and besides he is “The One” he is like a God on the stage. he is cool. Obama likes earmarks and we could all use them.

Palin: what about the war do you think Obama will do good handling the war?

Media: Heck yes. He will go right over there and talk to those terrorist. They like him. They will get along fine. Might not stop the attacks but will be good to see him talk. He is a good talker.

Palin: What do you think he will do for the people money wise?

Media: He will make some good money while he is president and we are hoping that maybe he will be kind enough to throw some our way.First he has to get his finances in order then he will help we are sure of that. The media got him elected he has to help.

Palin: So if he wins and he is not who he says he is then what?

Media: we will blame the rep. its always their fault.

Palin; Thank you for writting

Media: No thank Obama he said we could.

22. Kristina Felix | 09.28.08

Paul Stewart: How could anybody say it better? You’ve summed up the totality of the election, and I certainly hope your predictions are correct!!

23. Sue | 09.28.08

Has anybody given thought to the idea that if something happens to Obama, Biden would be the senior citizen in the White House? Believe me that wouldn’t be the ‘Change We need’. That would be what we’ve had from the Dems for decades. Also, Bill Clinton became president with no more experinece other than being governor of Arkansas. At least, Palin is smarter than he is and she won’t corrupt the Interns.

24. Character Counts1 | 09.28.08

When it comes to stupidity, Palin is in a league of her own. It is embarrassing to listen to someone who is that cognitively challenged. How could McCain not have known this? There is a simple remedy. We don’t have to vote for McCain/Palin.

25. Barry | 09.28.08

I hope Obama wins so when he does things to this country you can’t even imagine to mess this country up all you can blame is your selfs. But of corse dems like to put the blame on the rep.

26. sudhir | 09.28.08

I have a question. What is the IQ of Alaskans who elected this dumb person as their Gov. Maybe Moosemeat is not good for brains!

27. tony petres | 09.28.08

Hmmmm. All this VP stuff reminds me of another supposed “loon” the Republicans nominated, and his name was Dan Quale. I can recall the left just gushing over that one. “What a lightweight! It’s too good to be true! Now we got ‘em by the balls!!” Trouble is, VP’s never make a pinch-of-shit difference to the electorate!

McCain is what matters. And, (during the recent debate) he stood up to the mega-ag conglomorates-”no more ethanol subsidies!” What a tremendous shot in the arm for the environment! McCain’s got my vote for sure. As for the VP’s? Nobody cares.

Sorry ’bout that!!

28. steve | 09.28.08

Obama is fooling you all. His wife hates America. His wife hates whites.read her paper she wrote.Obama is being sued right now because of his lies.but you are all blind to it all. anyone you think is better then a rep doesn’t matter who they are. You could have had Hillary she was good but you went for a fast talker and a good looker. That has a plan for a plan. what a mistake you are all making.

29. horace manoor | 09.28.08

palin will help mccain win — americans twice elected george w bush, a freak of religiosity who knew nothing about foreign policy: all he knew was that he was going to let israel tell him what to do, which he did — palin is making it clear that she too will delegate our foreign policy to israel — that’s what the bible thumpers want to hear & they’ll all vote republican — bible thumpers think they’re clever, that by backing israel they’ll be able to take over the holy land — what they fail to grasp is that israel has a growing class of wealthy & powerful immigrants from russia who have no truck with americans & who will take israel to the russian side before the bible thumpers realize what’s going on — we’re doomed

30. kay | 09.28.08

SNL got Couric perfectly! Her face is so full of botox she can only grin. They need a little help on Obama - Try some purple lips and left out the most obvious stammering - ah ah ah and the mmm mmm mmm

From http://politicalwire.com/archives/2008/09/28/phone_it_in.html

“I’ll leave that up to others to make that judgment. This was an issue that was transcendent. I suspended my campaign and came back to Washington because I thought that it was vital to do so. Sen. Obama said he was available to discuss the issue by phone. I didn’t want to phone it in. I’m proud that we were able to get this done, and I’ll give the credit to everybody else.”

– Sen. John McCain, in an interview with the Columbus Dispatch, on why he needed to be back in Washington, D.C. to work on the bank rescue package.

“He can effectively do what he needs to do by phone. He’s calling members on both sides, talking to people in the administration, helping out as he can.”

– McCain aide Mark Salter, quoted by CBS News, explaining why his boss could work on the rescue package over the weekend from his campaign office and wasn’t needed on Capitol Hill.

33. gritter | 09.28.08

There is no limit to what Palin might do should she become President. She could destroy the Earth.

34. Laurie | 09.28.08

To sudhir - I lived in Alaska. There is NOTHING special about Alaskans (unless by “special” you mean “intellectually challenged”). I left Alaska because I couldn’t bear to see what Alaskans were doing to that beautiful land and it’s wildlife. Alaska is where people go to hide from the REAL challenge of living in a functioning supportive society. It is a miserably failed social experiment - with Palin the leading iconic figure. I’d love to be put in a cage with that woman and have a smack down - they keep saying she’s tough, right? Riiiiight… Barracuda? Methinks she’s more of a red herring.

35. thank you | 09.28.08

i see if we Alaskans don’t think the way you do we are all stupid. This country is messed up.You bring your big money and your cameras to our state and have a blast but we are all stupid.A lot of you got rich back in the 70’s in our state.but we are stupid. Rich dem’s come here to fish and spend their money but we are stupid. This state is a lot of wilderness and very beautiful clean air wild animals that people just love to see on tv. most of us don’t go to the corner every morning for a cup of joe we know how to make it our selfs. We are friendly to each other and enjoy our selfs and are happy.Thats a **** of a lot more then you big city folks can say. Most of you are always mad about something and you have dirty air and yes you were stupid enough to cut all you tress and put cement down instead. You also come here and tell us what we should do by taking our lively hood away and you don’t know nothing except that you were so stupid as to take what was once wonder in your area and turn it into concert.so don’t be call us stupid if anything you are the stupid people we still live in gods country do you?

36. obags | 09.28.08

Why don’t all you McCainites write in Bush for president? You still love him and would vote for him again since you have somehow missed the devastation he and you have caused. Point being you had no clue for the last two elections, but now you somehow think you do. How did this epiphany come about? How do you think you have any credibility?

37. fred | 09.28.08

thats ok Biden will make a ok president when Obama gets impeached.

38. Deeva | 09.28.08

So many people are missing the poetic masterpieces that Katie Couric brought forth from Sarah Palin. Look again at the transcript:

We have trade missions
Back and forth
We do,
It’s very important when you consider
Even national security issues
With Russia,
As Putin rears his head and comes
Into the air space of the United States of America
Where do they go?
It’s Alaska,
It’s just right over the border it is
From Alaska,
That we send those out to make sure
That an eye is being kept
On this very powerful nation
Russia,
Because they are right
There they are right
Next to our state.

40. LOL | 09.28.08

41. Mark | 09.28.08

CB- I am sure if Governor Palin and her handlers would allow more interviews, he foot would be permanently affixed in her mouth. She is totally unbelievable! PEOPLE PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW THIS DISASTER TO BECOME A REALITY!

42. SAM | 09.28.08

Steve,

Do you have pointers to papers you mentioned ?

43. Andy2 | 09.28.08

I feel bad for Palin. They are not letting her be herself. She is trying her best to remember what she is supposed to say on all the issues, but it’s obviously not what she would say if she were able to speak her mind. No doubt she is messing up and looking unconfident if the people around her don’t show her any confidence or support, only treat her mean, tell her what to say, and tell her she better not fail.

But that doesn’t mean I think she is qualified to be VP. She isn’t.

let’s be real, Alaska has a population the size of a Philly suburb, not even.

Most mayors of cities have more meaningful experience than she does.

I get it that her supporters will support her no matter what, and not back down on this “experience” question since they want her to win for some other reason, maybe ideological.

But at some point we have to take a step back and question the results of following ideology instead of practical politics - which is more what I see in Obama.

I also agree the race is between Obama and McCain, the VP slot does not make a lot of difference, except it is scary to think McCain would pick somsone unqualified.

I used to like McCain, back in 2000 I was ready to vote for him, and this year I always said he was the best of the Republican candidates. I have also said he would be better than Bush, but that isn’t saying much.

But he has not run a good campaign. He switches positions on everything from taxes to immigration to education to health care and takes a lot of money from lobbies, no matter what he says, including casinos. Of course to some extent this is the system we have - the problem is he keeps saying things that aren’t true, and expecting it not to matter.

It was pretty clear in the debate the one thing he really cares about is restoring the honor and confidence of the military. For a third-generation military guy I can understand why he may consider that the most important thing. But for many things, perhaps most issues, the military way is not the right way. The military is not a democracy.

It seems like everything he does, the Palin pick, the position switching, the negativity, the lies, all is justified in the name of getting to the position where he can restore the military, and carry out pre-emptive strikes as he thinks necessary.

The Republican convention was full of nationalist sentiment - as if that could solve our problems. We are so dependent on foreign oil and investment there’s no way to view ourselves as living only in a country - we live in a world and have to deal with it.

Let’s try to look past ideology and personal likes and dislikes to what is really best for the country, and try as I might I just can’t see that it’s McCain.

Meanwhile, I’m getting my news from The Daily Show because when that makes me cringe at least I’m laughing, too. It isn’t just Palin herself, it’s the cultural divide that she’s exposed. Just read the comments here, and then think about how the ones you disagree with are written by real breathing Americans who have given this a lot of thought and are sharing their honest opinions. Calling Palin a bimbo or Obama a slimbag doesn’t make this go away. Who was it who said… something about… “we are not as divided as our politics suggest”? Dear God, I hope it’s true…

45. stoo | 09.28.08

“do you think you have any credibility?” well thats a good question.. All this mess started with Cater. years and years ago. Why didn’t clinton work on this mess when he was president? He did by passing a bill that let these people give loans to people who couldn’t afford them. So you want to point fingers start pointing some where they should be pointed at the dem’s you can’t talk your way out of this its facts.Bush could have done more but if you think Bush did it all your dumber then we thought. This mess has been happening for many many years it just blew up now. If dem’s were in office they would still blame the rep’s for all of it. This land of ours will never heal unless all the people take credit for what has happen.

Sue, are you so sure about the interns? Young boys are used as interns.

47. Steve M | 09.28.08

This is in reply to Steve who says Obama is fooling us all….the Obamas own one home and one car, they associate with all of the neighbors in their neighborhood, they are common people unlike your “man” McCain who by his own admission owns more houses than he can recall and owns over 12 vehicles..now that is someone who I would call an elitist…I feel sorry for you steve, you are on the side of a team that is loosing, no wonder you are so exasperated..and the Obamas are not hateful people and especially do not hate white people..one last thing, Mr Obama is an intelligent and articulate man who knows the issues and Mr. Biden is an excellent choice for VP. Unfortunately for Mr. McCane, with his age and well publicized bouts with cancer, I absolutely shudder at the possibility of Palin (another pretty face but a non-talker) being placed in the most powerful job in the world.

48. obags | 09.28.08

Hey “thank you”, I wouldn’t call everyone from anywhere stupid, but you are doing exactly what you claim about people from outside Alaska. You have stereotyped all of us. I suppose it is just “rich dems” who have come there and taken advantage of your state. That is a stupid statement. Get a clue, Gomer. Wait until big oil really gets it’s claws into you, you won’t be seeing those trees and wild animals for long. Also, your points would be better put across if you learned how to spell and use proper grammar. Oh, sorry, my “elitism” is showing.

49. John Rowell | 09.28.08

I had assumed that clip of McCain preparing for the interview was recorded earlier, but that was live? If that was really live, then yeah McCain left Letterman hanging. And that’s not cool - I like Letterman!

50. steve | 09.28.08

look up mrs. Obama’s thesis she did in collage its all there

51. Geena Teel | 09.28.08

Sarah Palin is courageous, unlike Obama, who would never allow Sean Hannity an interview. Sarah cares about Americans, even those who hate her. Most of all, she’s honest, a quality sadly lacking in Obama and friends like Tony ‘convicted felon and slum lord’ Rezco, Rev.”God bleep America’ Wright, and William ‘convicted terrorist’ Ayers.

Those are the only people we know who say they know Obama. No one else remembers him, where he grew up or anyone at the schools he attended, except for those three Pakistani guys at his alma mater, Columbia University, a school he has yet to visit since graduating in 1983.

Shouldn’t these facts be of more concern to Americans than how Katie Couric, Bill Moyers and other Obama-maniacs attempt to politically assassinate her?

With Sarah, I finally have a voice, but it is a voice that those on the intolerant Left would like to silence forever. I guess the truth hurts.

52. Shoein | 09.28.08

Do young republicans ages 18-25 exsist anymore? Its an odd question but i think they are becoming extinct. The ones that do still exsist and clearly the PRO-Obama peps outnumber them on this board but occasionaly i read on of their posts and its Self loathing politcal anger at its very best. They know this election turned lopsided when Palin A.K.A trojan horse got picked. The best part is republicans defend her by attacking obama or biden example: Sarah palin is a puppet with nothing more than Neo Con talking points and dated Neo con talking points at that. Republican response…… Oh yea Obama is a MUSLIM !!!!! and Biden eats babies… we dont need facts were republicans.Look how long Obama served in the Illionis state senate. It is much more important then you may think. If you dont believe that then you cannot possibly understand history/politcs.

53. steve | 09.28.08

I hope Mr. Obama gets a chance to read the comments made by Mr. P. Stewart, everyone deserves to know that someone out there is really listening, and thinking…!

56. Eagle | 09.28.08

Obviously, if Mccain wanted to shock the country by choosing a woman VP, the choice whould’ve been Condoleezza Rice or even Dana Perino for that matter. Then the Mccain campaign could’ve had an justifiable back seat driver and given the american people a comparable choice. Instead I guess he thought that all the Clinton “female” supporters voted with their pu-nanny! And while it might be a totally feasable notion that men vote for certain things with their wang, I don’t think this was the time to try to suggestivly demonstrate that. If the voters don’t take notion an pay attention to what has or more than likely will happen and realize that the selection of Gov. Palin was a politcal mockery, our country will certainly face much more tramatic troubles than wall street and a competetive health care plan.

57. Eagle | 09.28.08

In reguards to the Palin / Couric interview, I think what Gov. Pailin really meant to say (or should of said) in place of, “I”ll find out and get it to ya”, is “I’M SARAH PALIN, AND IF YOU DON’T CHEW BIG RED THAN **** YOU!”

58. GHM | 09.28.08

McCain/Palin is a carryover of what got us in this mess

I am a conservative democrat - yes we were the first to be conservative.
There is no difference between a democrat and a republican; we are all American who are trying to live a life in these hard times.
Republicans and Democrat are all good people.
The bad people are the ones that go power crazy when elect.
Bush and Chaney have and the idiots in congress that party lines and not the good of the country, need to be replaced. (Bush’s Rubber stamp)
They removed all safeguards and allowed companies and their top management to abuse every moral and financial rule. These so called fat cat go from company to company and destroy the companies and send work overseas and layoff American workers. After the destroy it company they get a so called golden parachute and off the go to the next one to distroy.
They abuse the system by using lobbyist to make our congressmen governors and mayors rich and they write all our law and remove all the safeguards. If you notice the pharmaceutical, power and the oil companies are always on our tv brain washing us.
Palin fall into the category “they are using her” in Alaska to get their mine, oil and whatever else they can steal from the American People.
These so called elected official and nothing more the puppets being controlled by the fat cats.
This bailout is nothing more then a way of the Fat Cat to steal a vast amount of our money.
With Bush and the congress and the governor all crooks – we need do something.
My hope’s are on Obama and a Democratic congress. ( I hope he keep his promises)
McCain/Palin is a carryover of what got us in this mess

59. jeff | 09.28.08

Well our life here started falling apart when Clinton decided that the PNW shouldn’t log any more. That we need to save our trees for the future. So he stopped the logging witch helped support our schools and many other things. Thousands of people out of work. Now we are burning up like nothing else because we can’t take care of our forest. All because the dem’s and their special groups thought they knew what was best and they needed to save a bird.Did anyone besides us care nope not one bit.we were loggers who cared. We were Oregon we cared.A lot of those trees that were so wonderful that they showed on tv were trees that had been log and replanted. Before long there won’t be any forest because they will all burn up. So don’t tell me that this mess and every thing started with bush it started a long time ago for many of us.Dem’s have messed up a lot of lifes because they know whats best. I am going to vote rep this year because i am tried of people always thinking they know whats best because of special interest groups.

60. Amy | 09.28.08

Gail - So true. That divide really scares me. I hope also that it’s not true!

61. baretruth | 09.29.08

Palin is a bigger joke than the parodies and spoofs of her. Can’t believe she even deserves being seriously debated as a VP candidate. If this the best the GOP can do, god help our party. This Republican cannot in good conscience vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. Palin as VP is an insult — a slap in the face. Goes to show nothing was learned from the debacle of the last 8 years. McCain/Palin in 2008: yeah right. More like Archie Bunker and Pamela Anderson.

62. Democrat now Ind | 09.29.08

She may not sound “suave” like Obama when he READS his telepromper. But she is more homnest and more real.. And certainly does not have the shady characters in her past that Obama does. And above all, she has MORE experience and she is the Veep candidate.

America keeps talking about Sarah Palin while Obama runs for office on NO record and NO experience. America, Wake Up! If you do not, this inexperienced and arrogant for no reason jerk could be running this country. And that Mr. Letterman IS THE REAL JOKE.
THE JOKE OF THIS CENTURY - BARACK HUSSIEN OBAMA!

ps. - Has anyone else noticed now that Obama is running for “President” Osama bin Laden is now ONLY bin Laden? Kind of like you are NOT suppose to use Hussien either. What is America thinking?

63. 181 | 09.29.08

I agree Den Gran. These are scary times.

Vote Obama + Biden 2008

64. Alex | 09.29.08

Is it any wonder McCain makes such horrible, erratic decisions. McCain himself writes,

“I don’t torture myself over decisions. I make them as quickly as I can, quicker than the other fellow, if I can.
Often my haste is a mistake, but I live with the consequences without complaint.” (McCain’s memoir, Worth the Fighting For)

Just looking at his campaign it’s pretty clear that he lives by this philosophy. If, god forbid, McCain is elected president, we’ll all have to live with his mistakes - starting with Sarah Palin.

Fellow Americans, look at Obama and see excellence, not color. Do us a favor. Cast a vote out of love for our country. Give us something to be genuinely proud of: President Obama.

67. Andy | 09.29.08

Thanks for the reminder Gail. We’re all in this together and need to calm down with the insults. There are a lot of talk show hosts and media that make a lot of money playing into our all-to-human instincts to mock and belittle. Going along with this attack for attack sake is not the way to approach this election. Listen to the candidates, vote for the two you think will make the best team.

68. jpl | 09.29.08

Sarah makes the republicain look so bad I wonder why john mc cain pick her
now, I realize why the call mc cain a marverick, because he does thing at ordinary. I hate when people try to compare mc cain with President Bush at least people can see cheney next to him can be a help but teady bear palin is really from a different side of the world, she thought the vp seat is like gorvern alaska with a team of kid and soon will become granma if she is not already one because we dont know a lot of stuff still about her I think what we need to now we should send a commission to alaska to find out what wrong over there because john mc cain is too old to find out what s going on

69. Todd | 09.29.08

Wow. Sarah is an attractive lady, gives a nice speech. But after this past week, all those former GOP presidential candidates are sure looking nice right now. With the financial trauma the country is experiencing, it would have been great to have a Romney in there, or somebody else with strong market savvy.

If McCain picked Palin because she’s a skirt (i.e. to cater to the “let’s get a woman in the white house ASAP” fanaticism that this country is experiencing for no good reason), well shame on him. This Republican feels she’s woefully unprepared for the task at hand, despite her impressive speech-giving skills.

70. CatWV | 09.29.08

Frighteningly primitive and stupid.
McCain selected her without using the head on his shoulders…sad.
He is a well known skirt chaser.
I found her very arrogant and condescending.
LOOK AT THE FACES in the Republican crowd - the braying, mean, angry, uncompassionate, right-wing extremist fellow-travelers, the hollering, extreme prejudiced, anti-everything crew, from towns too small to have a library.
Voting on punch lines and name calling…God bless America because we need it.
A while ago she said that the war in Iraq was “God’s plan”.

Sarah Palin’s remarks demonstrated to me that she advocates division and would rather bash her opponent instead of detailing a plan about moving America forward. I hear the same things in her speeches.
I could care less about her family. I care more about my own. What about health care, jobs, and global warming? I work two jobs and I cannot afford to get sick!
They will take this country to the cleaners! Total red-neck talk. Low class talk. Lacks substance in the speech. Not a VP quality! Not even someone you would want teaching your children in SCHOOLS!
I’m ashamed. This is the BEST they can come up with?
What in the world does to world think of the USA?

72. Nabi | 09.29.08

Who writes this rubbish? Neither Letterman or SNL are nearly as relevant as you dinosaurs seem to think, both are musty relics. SNL is virtually unwatchable, the material is of such low quality, and the only things Letterman has going for him are vanity and pomposity. Anyone who finds himself watching these shows for more than a minute or so should be worried.

I say this as a Canadian with little interest in the election but who would like to see the Monitor show at least a minimum of intelligence and taste.

73. MIckie | 09.29.08

Had Sarah Palin been an ethical person, concerned about the honor, safety, and productivity of our country, she would have declined the offer of Republican Veep contender. Afterwards, she would have earned a permanent esteemed place in in the hearts and minds of Americans.

74. Loretta | 09.29.08

Sam, #42, the paper Steve is talking about is Michelle Obama’s thesis paper, I think. It doesn’t actually say any of the things Steve thinks it does, but the right wing smear people have been releasing distorted and misquoted exerpts from it for some time, claiming that it shows her as “angry” and that she “hates whites”.

It’s the same way with all the apparently shocking quotes you see floating around from Obama’s books. They are taken out of context, distorted, misquoted or, sometimes, made up from whole cloth. You can check all this stuff out at Snopes Urban Legend Reference Pages. http://www.snopes.com .

75. polisci major | 09.29.08

I hate to say it but the last 8 years have been my experience to. I’d say some kind of requiremnent is needed at this point to keep people from voting who are ignorant/don’t know enough of the facts and larger issues to make a informed decision on what is in their best interests. Unfourantly that would be unconstitutional even if it may be in the best interest of American Society today. The biggesT threat to democracy is not terrorism but voter apathy.

Simply towing the party line does not cut it. At the end of the day this is a democracy after all and voting at all levels of elections should not be done lightly. Again I don’t think that holds true anymore. It bothers me that this is the case. You saw it in the last two election with President Bush constanTly telling people we needed to fear this that and the other, unless you vote for me. Too many people, I beleive bought into that and look at the mess the country is in today. The stock market fiasco, the quagmire in Iraq, the continued decline of the United States image abroad-for all those republican out there who say that isn’t so. Go travel abroad and ask the common citzens what they think. You’ll be suprised at what you hear, I did back in Italy in 06 and it wasn’t good.

At the same time I don’t see Obama winning-this ties again ties into the whole “people are stupid” theme. One thing I picked up in my class the other day is that about 15% of people who say they would vote black are lying and don’t vote black. This causes the opinion polls to be grossly unacurate. Another thing that bother is me is the State of Maine. You’ve all hear the expression as Maine goes so goes the Nation? That’s not true as for as elections go, as Maine as a pretty consistant history of casting it’s electoral votes on the loosing presidential race.

As for the McCain/Palin ticket-that scares me. If McCain dies in office Palin takes over, and if McCain is elected he most likely will continue the Bush Policies. Either way is a loose-loose situation for everyone in America. Even the eltitest Republican’s. You guys can only make bad decisions in nominating people for so long before you burn yourself. Your seeing it on Wall Street and if McCain is elected I believe it will get much worse.

76. Brian | 09.29.08

So what, Palin had one bad interview. The liberal media has been trying to destroy her for weeks with lies and mud yet nothing sticks. People are forgetting that Obama was a terrible interview at first and said dumb things like there are 57 states. Nobody knows the state of this race because the MSM is reporting biased news and biased polls. McCain is going to be the next president.

78. Lucca | 09.29.08

The Saturday Night Live skit parodying Katie Couric interviewing Sarah Palin was funny. SNL was actually being nice to Ms. Palin as her performance in the real interview was just as awful and embarrasing.

McCain has shown that he is impulsive and doesn’t think before making important decisions.

McCain and Palin are a scary pair and hopefully the American public won’t be fooled into voting for them!

79. Jane | 09.29.08

80. Mr River | 09.29.08

Repubs = Comedy.

After 2 terms of preaching unilaterlism, deregulation, nonengagement with perceived foes, our wonderful Pres Bush has embraced UN joint action, insisted on a (colossal) govt bailout of Wall St, and sent diplomats to speak with Iran. Why did it take him 8 yrs to figure out how to do his job?

Repubs = Comedy.

…cuz they privatize profits and socialize losses, they dont believe in taxes but they love a bloated defense budget, they got it alone but cry for help from friends when the crisis is too big. And like McCain and Palin, they always contradict themselves.

…pass the popcorn.

81. Lou | 09.29.08

I’ve learned as an independent along time ago to refrain arguing with foul mouth liberals so full of hatred that constantly play the blame game, play on fear and promises and never have answers to the problems..its all talk. Just like when they got a hold of the House and Senate and their 100 day promises…. They”ll just wear you down from experience..its not worth it and there’s no way I’ll vote for that ex used car salesman/attorney Biden and Obama Bin Barrack Hussein the Christian..the man of hope..not with nut job friends like he has…

82. Richard | 09.29.08

I love how there are still GOP supporters out posting.

Incoherant, but still posting.

McCain has been correctly characterized, as has Palin, by the comedians. The GOP is a laughing stock.

It would be even funnier, if they had not just bankrupted our country.

83. Lesley | 09.29.08

I can’t help but wonder why John McCain picked Palin as his running mate. I’m even more curious, however, how she was voted governor of Alaska in the first place. My dog is smarter than her. In her defense though, I have a smart dog. Sarah Palin has revived snl at least temporarily.

84. Beamer | 09.29.08

Palin has only had one atrocious interview and one bad one - and has only been allowed 3 interviews. What does that tell you about “keeping her muzzled”… and why McCain’s operatives are doing it?

Attacking Obama… or Biden… or even McCain’s handlers doesn’t make this disturbing truth go away. Sorry, I wish it would.

85. nate | 09.29.08

to #35, “thank you.” if you want to prove that people from alaska aren’t stupid, maybe you should use correct grammar and spelling for starters. it’s pretty easy to have room for half a million people in the biggest state in the country. however, us “city people” may live in the concrete jungles, which wasn’t out urban planning decision, but at least we have real social skills. we have to face the big challenges, deal with REAL problems, not shovel snow and shoot moose all day. i say, let the people who can spell make the important decisions! who’s with me, baby?!?

86. Renegade | 09.29.08

If something happens to Obama this country will burn. And whoever if that is if someone is planning an attack on Obama, MAN OH MAN!!!! YOU BETTER GET ON YOUR KNEES AND PRAY NOTHING HAPPENS TO OBAMA and that group of people should know better to back off, because we will find them.

I agree with some of the comments in here, people are fools. If the republican party chose an nonexistent character such as Mickey Mouse, people would vote for it.

87. captbilly | 09.29.08

I no that for many people the election is like a football game, and they will cheer for their team no matter what. For others the election is some sort of reality show where we get to pick the person we feel we would like to see win. For me and most Americans this is a deadly serious election where the stakes are nothing less than the survival of our country. I simply cannot believe that a serious patriotic American could actually believe that Palin could handle being President.

I may not agree with the proposed policies of any of the Presidential candidates, but I could see any of them doing the job without embarrassing us or themselves. But Palin is just not up to the job. The best case scenario would be that she just does what she is told by McCain’s advisors, and provides mountains of comedy for John Stewart and Seven Colbert. The worst case scenario is a Palin who thinks she is the decider, and causes the end of all life on earth by doing something epic stupid.

88. scared2death | 09.29.08

all of this is hilarious and everything, but people will still vote for mccain and palin regardless of their qualifications. everyday, i am amazed, by people making excuses for palin and mccain, saying, “she’ll eventually get her sea legs”. she’s running for vice president of the united states! shouldn’t you already know what your doing? also, is this a sign of the things to come from mccain? its already been established that he will place unqualified people in positions of absolute power. i ask you does his choice in vice president instill confidence in you? knowing that mccain’s decision, in a running mate, is a bad one, does mccain instill confidence in you?

89. James | 09.29.08

My God, dear lord above, please in your ultimate wisdom, let us know how it is that you came to create such an unbelievable moron; that is, Sara Palinane.

Well, in her defense, she’s good looking; she’s obviously a woman, so go Clinton voters (that women will actually vote for this imbecile just because she’s a woman is sickening; Clinton’s a Democrat you fools!!).

In any case, I do pity the woman, getting grilled on national TV, seeing your short-lived political career go down the tubes, as you struggle to construct an intelligible sentence on why seeing Russia equates to having experience in foreign affairs — yikes…

I do not pity, however, John military-methods-are-the-only-means-to-approaching-international-issues McCain. Great, so he supports the war in Iraq, fantastic. HELLO people, the economy is tanking — does spending 1 BILLION dollars per day on a foreign “war” help us here at home? The cost of the proposed economic bailout is LESS than the total cost of the Iraq nightmare, I mean war. (thanks for all the lies, Bush, such a shame to see you go out as the worst president in US history).

McCain means more of the same, and perhaps worse, since he is clearly pro-military and very pro-war. The guy wants to play war games and go down as a great military leader — his favorite subject is talking about being a POW and how much he believes in and respects the military. Great, he should go sign up again. I’m sure he could find a job as a high ranking military officer.

But please, we do not need a general; we need a president. Let’s end the days of appealing to the lowest common denominator, of looking for Joe the plumber who likes donuts and a 12-pack of beer for dinner as our leader.

The president is NOT like everyone else; that’s why he (or she in a future election) needs to be able to articulate himself exceedingly well on the world stage, and project confidence here at home and abroad (what a laughing stock we’ve become with bumbling Bush as our leader!)

IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE — the people will speak loud and clear in November. Again, the democrats will have to cleanup the mess of the Republicans, as did Clinton during his 2-term presidency.

Obama-time ;–)

90. Roger | 09.29.08

We’ve got a serious problem with our economy, yet David Letterman wants and GETS attention to his petty little war with McCain. If McCain appeases Letterman and goes on his show, I’ll not vote for McCain as planned.

91. AZ Indy | 09.29.08

There’s part of me that truly feels sorry for Sarah Palin, but another, larger part of me says that she should have had enough self-awareness to realize that she was simply not qualified to be the Vice President. I know that there are people who will argue that Obama doesn’t have enough experience to be President; the difference is that, should he be elected, he has the intelligence and the ability to lead.
I don’t think Ms. Palin is stupid. She’s simply in way over her head, and all of the last-minute cramming in the world is not going to change that. I agree with the sentiment that she has been kept muzzled and forced to parrot what campaign managers have told her to say, and that’s too bad. But then, if she isn’t confident enough in her own words and convictions to stand up to them, then she is not, nor ever will be a leader.
As for McCain… well, I can’t say I’m a fan. I don’t disagree with everything he’s said, but I do think that, ultimately, a McCain presidency will do more harm than good, domestically and abroad. Therefore, this November will find me an Arizona Independent voting for Obama.

92. Andrew | 09.29.08

Hey thank you,

I’m going to copy and paste your comment in order to show people how smart Alaskans really are.

Clearly, Alaska is a special place with special people…and you haven’t even cut down all your trees and laid cement yet.

We are so jealous.

BTW, Aren’t your coffee beans that you get up and make your own coffee with shipped there by the out of touch city folk from the south…on their cement roads?

And, FYI, nobody thinks Alaskans are stupid. In fact, we just suspect that many of you (not all of you) are a bit out of whack. A lot of us think (and for many reasons are right to assume) that many of you moved there in order to escape the real responsibility of living around other people. Just like people that move 20 miles out of town in Cali to live in the mountains, or people that set up a trailer in the middle of nowhere in Arizona, or people that find themselves living in the jungle in Hawaii, a good amount of Alaskans are there because they are escaping something, and until they confront it they will be forever confused.

Palin’s family are transplants from Sandpoint Idaho (one of the most racist towns in the US, BTW.) This family, from what I’ve seen, fits the escaping reality label perfectly. Her Dad moved them all up there without a job in order to do more “hunting and fishing.” I mean, I’d love to go there to hunt and fish, but I wouldn’t MOVE there without a job to become a burden on your economy. Also, I have great friendships here in the south, in a city no less, people that surround me that I love, and I have no reason to pack up and abandon them to live in the wilderness.

I am sure that the majority of people in Alaska aren’t really trying to escape reality (how can you, everything is real), but the Palin family was, and Sarah didn’t fall far from the tree. Alaskans might not be all stupid, but your Governor/Republican VP candidate sure is.

Geena Teel,

Actually, the left would really like to have Palin talk as much as possible. Talk, talk, talk away protected one. I’m getting bored of making the same “Watch out, Putin’s head is in our airspace,” joke. I’m sure she has some other gems tucked away for us in that five college BA brain of hers.

Wow, Palin’s peformance in her interviews is really scary.
In fact, recent intelligence reports indicate that Russia is militarily reinforcing its eastern coast that faces Alaska in order to counter “the Palin gaze.”

You are right! He did! And he didn’t even lie about it like McCain did. He just stated that he had other priorities, like running for president of the US. Maybe this is why he had the time to commit to his other responsibility, attending the debate on Friday which we as US citizens so deserved, as well as the completely nonconstructive meeting with GWB, McCain, and the heads of congress, without suspending his campaign.

Sounds like same person who posted #25 and 35 are one in the same (sic) selfs! Geena post #51 if Sarah helped you find your inner idiot, I mean, voice I’m happy for you, you sound as cogent as Sarah does. No wonder they are keeping her on a tight leash! Only let out of her gilded cage for three tightly controlled, hand picked interviews. Obama and Biden have done literally hundreds of them, stating their positions. They have been vetted,SHE has not unfortunately! The reason people are trying to interview her is so that we may be informed about her stand on policies, not to assassinate her! I think she is truly scary, and is out of her depth completely.

99. Phyllie | 09.29.08

The expectations are set so low for Sarah Palin’s debate performance that all she has to do is stand up, be a bobblehead, and not fall on the floor, and the McCain camp and media will say she was a greater orator than Abraham Lincoln! As nice as she seems, she is just not ready. Come back in 5-10 years.

100. TheBear | 09.29.08

All Biden has to do is to stay professional, courteous and intelligently answers the questions presented to him; the latter being something Plain is unable to do. If Biden ignores Palin and focuses on the event, then he’ll walk away from the debate with honors. The only way Palin is going to make it thru the VP debate is to do one of the following:
• Call in sick, which wouldn’t be far from the truth.
• Run off to help avert some national financial meltdown.
• Phone a friend for some answers, do they allow cell phones on debates? Hmmm, something her handler might want to find out. Maybe she can wear an earpiece and someone can whisper the answers to her.

101. Will The Real Lastangelman Please Stand Up? | 09.29.08

Biden has been an embarrassment to Delawareans for years? Yet, they keep re-electing him.

Palin is beyond embarrassment. The Governorship of Alaska could be run by Howdy Doody (for that matter, so could the Governorship of Texas). She is an entertaining if frightening sideshow of what Republican tactics during the Clinton years produced. What is even scarier is how stupid does John McCain think are the registered voters? Or at least, enough to get him elected? And the real danger here is John McCain is not a native-born American citizen. The Constitution is very clear on this. If he is declared elected when Vice President Cheney counts the electoral votes, what will stop a successful lawsuit to deny him from taking the oath of office on that very clear technicality and have Governor Sarah Palin be sworn in as President? An emergency Constitutional Convention?

102. KMC | 09.29.08

and I say this as a mccain supporter and contrary to pundits belief it has nothing to do with palin one way or another even though she is proving to be problematic. it is the inability of mccain and his campaign to have stated a positive reason to elect him and mccain’s incoherent and inconsistent attacks on obama. the way to beat him simply was not used, sad to say.

good luck president-elect obama

Actually, I’m starting to think Palin’s selection is part of a grand plan by Reps to lose the election. They know they have made a huge mess to leave for the next administration. They figure nobody will be able to look good while cleaning it up - as happened to Hoover, and as happened to Bush senior after the Reagan deficits and Savings and Loan collapse. Rather than have their party suffer its just desserts again, they have set up “plausible deniability” and want the Dems to have to deal with the crash Reps caused. They know McCain is too old and Palin too uninformed; they never intended to have either of them serve. They figure this time they will avoid actually being in office when their stuff hits the fan. As long as they can put it off a couple of more months, that is. That’s why the bail-out was so urgent.

Either that or they really are dumb as posts and assume we are, too. That’s the thing about current Reps. You just never know for sure whether they are evil or stupid.

Michelle Obama’s thesis is here (since steve didn’t link to it as requested): http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8642.html

She wrote about how a Princeton Education as a Black person changed them and made them less connected to the black community. Nothing racist in it at all. Just talks how she felt like an outsider at times being black at a white school with only 4 black professors. Typical of the time, very conservative, non-radical perspective.

VP have a little effect on the presidency except if the fill in gaps missing in the president’s resume like Gore did for Clinton, Cheney did for Bush, Biden does for Obama and Palin does for McCain (right wing, young and a women).

Talked to a female Fox reporter Saturday, she was a big Palin supporter. She had been drinking the koolaide and had no idea what Palin really supported. Hard to believe a TV journalist was so uninformed. So that tells you where these supporters originate.

111. Richard Wagner | 09.29.08

Thank you 17. Paul Stewart for your excellent comment. No matter who is going to win the election, the American people can already be proud of Mr. Barack Obama and embarrassed about Mr. John McCain. However, I do trust the majority of the voters to see the obvious and vote for Obama; our very survival depends on their vote. I am in my seventies and always voted republican in the past. I do not think that I can ever again support a party that produced Bush, Cheney and McCain.

If mclame and painful get elected, consider the possibility she really will put something in his Metamucil so she can become president!!

I wonder what the retardicans would do if mclame won the voters popular vote, but Obama was allowed to steal the whitehouse just like bush did!? The most wonderful “perk” of an Obama win would be so that the far right can see what it feels like to HATE their commander in Chief, only they won’t even have a good reason other than good old prejudice! At least bush haters have many really good reasons to hate him and wish him painful harm!!
This is not the first time bush has destroyed the economy, he did just about the exact same thing in the S&L collapse of the 70’s. How quickly retardicans forgot that and got exactly what they deserved now, the only problem is they drug those of us intelligent enough to know this was going to happen with them!!!

118. Contractor | 09.29.08

So the current Democratic VP candidate is shown discussing the qualities needed in today’s political leaders - one of which being the need to instill confidence in the electorate by displaying historical knowledge and the ability to apply it to current situations. In the very next breath he ironically analogizes the scenario to that of FDR during the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929 (sic) during which President FDR (sic again) exuded leadership thru televised talks (sic yet again) with the American people.

Now, doesn’t anyone think it’s odd that that amalgam of would-be-funny-except-it-is-true nonsense by the current Dem “heartbeat” is totally ignored by this forum as well as by the media choir? Anyone? If not, then how credible is ANYTHING that the choir produces? Come on, lemmings, at least PRETEND to think for yourselves.

119. sam | 09.29.08

Everywhere I’ve read it’s so overwhelmingly pro Obama and anti-republican there’s not really anyone else to convince. Those that couldn’t be convinced would not budge anyway. I can’t see how Obama could possibly lose unless only those voting democratic are the only ones on the internet? Is this the case? I couldn’t see how the democrats could lose the last election (despite being in a war) but they managed…come on, Kerry was the best they had? Incidentally, one bloggers commnets stated that the republicans may purposely be wanting to lose this election; exactly what I think the democrats wanted to do last time. Not that I would do any different, either then or now…

120. john | 09.29.08

It is clear that the liberal base is unhinged and unleashed. Their resonant and vacuous leader (Obama) is incapable of making decisions. Like his reactive minions, he had to take time to mount an attack on Palin. Translation, they didn’t know what hit them (was not in any course at Harvard). Odd, he was not needed in Washington, again an afterthought;he also has on a bracelet, an afterthought. It is clear his calling in community leadership or academe, not in an arena of pragmatic politics. Bottom line-he’s never run anything! Reason-he can’t, it’s not in his nature. If the naive debate team captain wins he will be thrust forward by a complicit media, a frothing base of true believers, and empowered by the worst congress in memory.

121. gettyleigh | 09.29.08

The founding fathers would be rolling in their graves if they knew how big our federal government is. It was never meant to be this way. The thirteen colonies merged for the purpose of having a strong centralized government that existed only to serve the states, and to have limited powers that benefited the good of all states. Government at the state level was to be the boss of federal and local government. The tax dollars that Obama plans to spend on socialized programs such as national healthcare will come from the taxpayers one way or the other.

OMG, it’s Caribou Barbie! John McCain should be ashamed of himself. Using this woman to appeal to the Disney fans who think this is a made for TV movie…Hockey Mom Goes to Washington and Sends Everyone to Bed Without Supper (except her 17 year old daughter, who goes home and to bed with her 17 year old boyfriend.) I’m starting to feels sorry for her. Not sorry enough to vote for her, mind you, but sorry for the nasty way the GOP is using her as a distraction from real issues and the fact that John McCain is staring down the barrel of dementia.

Barack Obama at least knows the Constitution — having actually taught it for over a decade — and he knows povery, unemployment and the problems of public education from the ground up. He’s also had extensive legislative experience in both Illinois and Washington, D.C. And if he runs the country as well as he’s run his campaign, sidelining the powerful Clintons and facing down each trumped up challenge that’s been thrown at him, then I think he’ll do a fine job running our country.

I personally like his campaign organization rule: No drama queens.

AND LOOK AT WHAT A GREAT JOB HE DID!!!! She is a total joke… I actually think that this would be even funnier if she wasn’t actually running to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. She is nepetistic, vengeful, spiteful, afraid of witches, book banning, ignorant and more importantly a hypocrite! She will go back to Alaska and finish her term and we will not hear about her again until her troopergate investigation is finished (and she is probably guilty)! Ahh Sarah, thanks for the laughs!

134. Robyn | 09.29.08

Why do you say this? I have lifelong ties to the state of Delaware, and I can assure you we’re very, very proud of Joe Biden. Sure, he can occasionally make a verbal gaffe, but there’s a HUGE difference between an erstwhile lack of tact…and being completely unqualified to accept a VP nomination. I don’t think many people in the know would ever say Biden isn’t capable of being an excellent VP…and, unlike his opponent, he’s a very well-known and respected negotiator abroad.

By the way, Palin has now amply demonstrated to the world that she’s horrendously out of her league. What made Tina Fey’s killing impersonation of Palin Saturday night so amazing was that whole sections of Fey’s dialogue were repeated verbatim from Palin’s interview with Katie Couric. And you think Palin’s ready?!

Then I sat back and watched Palin popularity explode and people were falling all over themselves, I thought no this can’t be working. Then Palin went into hiding to be agressively coached. I was relieved to soon find out that she isn’t a quick study because the two times they let her out she did exactly what was feared, she proved how truly incompetent she is for this position. The whole election Circus is insulting and ridiculous. Palin did not have to have an interview for me to figure out that she was out of her league. It doesn’t take a whole lot of common sense to understand why the Republicans selected a womann and Obama selected an older White male. Obama needs credibility with the classic white haired Caucasion male vote. Biden was a pitiful choice.
John needs any help he can get. When Hillary was out of the picture, selecting a woman was definitely shrewd. But Palin? What were they thinking? Obviously they did not think the move all of the way through. clearly looks trumped intellect and experience. If I was John I would fire my advisers.
The whole process is one step away from a high school popularity contest. Neither party is worthy of my vote. It is “more of the same” from both parties.

I don’t think its too late to drop Palin from the ticket. Either Huckabee or Romney could easily be substituted. Roberts was resisted by the Democrats because he is too conservative, but at least everyone could imagine him as a Supreme Court justice. Nobody, not even Republicans, could imagine Harriet Myers on the Supreme Court. Something similar is happening here, even Republicans cannot imagine Palin conducting foreign affairs (not those kind of affairs, silly!) or standing up to the Russians. Please give us a break, Republicans. Give us a real VP candidate.

143. Edwin P | 09.29.08

At least Gov. Sarah Palin is running for VP. Look at the paper-thin, leftist/socialist empty-suit of a candidate the Democrats have running for President. 148. pe gi | 09.29.08

Palin won Alaska because it was a 3 way race with a very qualified brilliant independent candidate who picked up almost 10% of the vote. She won by 9% over the rather dull former Democratic governor. Without the independent candidate, the results may have been different. The polls before the election showed the major party candidates tied. The Alaskan debates were held with all three attending. When Palin spoke, she basically did the running off of the mouth, double speaking and saying virtually nothing. The debates involved Alaskan issues with one question being… “Where in Alaska would you live?” They were not the most intellectually challenging debates for the most part.

149. Olna Reeves | 09.29.08

Let’s just look at the running theme of the nearness to Russia constituting foreign policy experience. We’ll try to forget that she named Ireland (or it was listed by her Republican “handlers”) as a foreign country she visited, when in fact, her plane stopped there to refuel, and that was all.

FINALLY, after her THIRD question on the topic by Couric, Sarah Palin “got it” sort of, and mentioned that they’ve had some trade missions back and forth. This is fundamentally stretching the truth at best, and probably a lie, but at least it is answering the OBVIOUS question. In fact, Alaska hasn’t had any trade agreements with Russia during Palin’s administration, and she has met with no foreign representatives of any kind from Russia and the last trade agreement was before she took office, and involved something very minor with a small island having to do with Native crafts.

As far as Putin sweeping across and attacking Wasilly, Anchorage, or oil fields, that is when it gets really preposterous.

Functioning well with advisers as VP, or President, is predicated on having a certain amount of intellectual depth, a command of sometimes complex ideas. Palin misses the BASIC ideas. She is beautiful, ambitious and driven, but horrifying undereducated and ill prepared for this high an office.

The 2nd Tina Fey skit was barbed, and good satire, but if you read the Couric transcript, some of Palin’s own comments sounded like satire. Well, never mind me. I was furious when a former frat party boy, bottom-of-the-class “legacy” student like Bush, who failed at every business he attempted before he got into government, then gets elected president and starts a completely UNNECESSARY war, and drives the economy into what could very well become a depression. If that happens, who is going to get all patriotic about Georgia then, as in McCain’s “we are all Georgians.” If Palin/McCain are elected, we are all fools!

Yes, most people, when exhausted, make gaffes here and there. But, people have to learn to distinguish making a gaffe here and there, to being a gaffe. Palin is McCain’s gaffe.

Thank you for your up-front article and commentary.

154. Olna Reeves | 09.29.08

Another comment I’d like to make, for the McCain “verge of victory” believers is that we are not at the verge of “winning” or a “victory” in Iraq. Leslie Stahl, speaking to the new commander on 60 minutes, toured the REAL Iraq, a place with garbage all over, raw pools of sewage in the streets in many places, days where they have only 2 hours of electricity, and full of people who were happier under Saddam Hussein. Instead, of verge of victory, the commander called the situation “fragile.”

Trying to manage Iraq, into stability and self governance, is something that could take thirty or more years, and bankrupt out country into widespread poverty. We can’t even keep their electricity on! Is this what we want? All because Bush had a delusion Bin Laden and Saddam were in cahoots, and Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and none of this was true. WE DON’T BELONG THERE. Most Iraqis hate us, especially the hundreds of thousands who have relatives killed as “collateral damage” or the millions who fled the country for their safety and are struggling to survive in countries where they aren’t wanted.

People should start looking for the truth, in situations and candidates. Drop the bigotry and hatred you were taught. Read something beyond sound bytes. Before 9/11 attacks, I had read 500 pages on Bin Laden, and I was e-mailing all my friends that this lunatic was going to do something horrible. That was my gut feeling. President Bush had a major threat report cross his desk about Bin Laden attacking in the U.S., and he ignored it.

Willy sounds almost as coherent as Palin. We do need a change in the education in our country. High School graduates should be able to construct a sentence that is logical.

156. Kinte | 09.29.08

I thought education and being knowledgeable on subjects being discussed was a requirement to hold certain jobs. It is the same way with many jobs in this country. Not everyone comes out of grad school has experience, but they have an understanding of how to run things, the fundamentals of that line of work.
Now, for a strategist to say that the bar will be set so low for her, she can stroll her way through it, is such a ridiculous thing to say. That only tells you, screw the country, we don’t care if a person is qualified to run this country, as long as it is our party. Way to put country first.

There are so many uneducated people in this country on these blogs just ranting.
I don’t care who wins this election, don’t freaking vote just because your candidate is a republican or a democrat.
Use your GOD GIVEN brain for a change.

157. Jason | 09.29.08

Sue… please. Your comparing a complete dolt to a person who has extensive higher education experience, a Yale Law School, and someone who was elected to Phi Beta Kappa… comparable to Palin? Are you out of your mind, or just had to throw Clinton out there?

Stop spreading lies, stop acting like a moron, and start waking up!

“Also, Bill Clinton became president with no more experinece other than being governor of Arkansas. At least, Palin is smarter than he is and she won’t corrupt the Interns.”

Republicans have held the White House for 20 of the past 28 years and Republicans have controlled both houses of congress for 10 of the past 12 years. Yet Republicans blame the Dems for colassal failures in global leadership, banking, realestate, spiraling healthcare costs, social security insolvancy. Goes to prove that the “buck never stops” with Republicans as the fault is always with someone else.

Mr. McCain was really not thinking far in advance when he chose Mrs. Plain.

I think it was a mistake.

I agree that it was not a Country First move, rather a campaign first motive.

I read in the LA Times that she is of the opinion that Dinosaurs and Men walked the earth at the same time. Good Grief! She has seen the footprints to prove it.

She is all for fossil fuels but thinks the fossils are only 5-6ooo years old.

161. Ron Sampson | 09.29.08

Goodbye Sarah Palin. Your family NEEDS YOU! Your party does not.

162. Olna Reeves | 09.29.08

What about Palin explaining who the “good guys” are, and who the “bad guys” are, as if she’s explaining this to 3rd graders. To all the bigots out there who hate Obama because he is half black, Sarah is teaching them not to hate Israel because they are Jews. Wrapping their minds around that might be difficult, but they won’t bother, and instead just concentrate on how perky and fun Sarah is.

Unfortunately, this polarization of good and evil, with no shades of gray (think of it as a jumble of good/evil), is endemic in fundamentalist thinking. What about “love your enemy?” Are Americans always the good guys? Russians always the bad guys. It is this kind of thinking that was wrong in the 1950’s and even worse in the new global economy.

Let’s pick leaders who are interested in making peace, finding common ground, not war mongering.

Boy oh boy, we are in trouble……..America is in trouble….
I have been trying to ignore this controv… about Sara Palin for past few weeks, and hoping that it would go away, but after much reading the comments, it makes me curious again. After watching a minute and a half of the Katie Vs. Sarah interview, SH*T, is this the best of what McCain can comes up with…
America is in deep SH*T, pardon my French, but it’s the fact… America is too valuable to gamble with, and from the past months, all I see from Sen. McCain is GAMBLING with his campaign. Do Americans want a GAMBLER in the White House? The image of an honorable man is started to fade away slowly…
Also, from the debate, I don’t think I’ve ever heard Sen. McCain mention any plan for education at all. EDUCATION is a foundation of a strong country, is it not?

I am neither a Rep. or a Dem.
May the BEST man win (no Sarah Palin please)

An interesting confab…

As I browse the posted comments “…of the People”– sorting out the grains (of wisdom) from the chaff (the indigestible “emotional roughage”),– I personally reflect on how the upcoming election will be the eleventh time I will exercise my very privileged freedom to choose who will determine the guidelines of my future security and quality of life in the country that I love.

For those of you who share your thoughts and opinions on the present candidates for the highest (i.e., still most prestigious and powerful) decisional office in the World,…take a moment to step back from… ALL the media input and political inclinations of those around you.

Your vote is YOURS alone and is to be honored as such. I have always registered as an “Independent” voter– casting a split ticket, voting for each candidate on her/his own merit. I go to the polls with a sense of dutiful pride and contentment (still) knowing that I live in a nation of freedoms that my forefathers gave their very lives to defend.

I will soon cast– but ONE, single (private) vote in this upcoming presidential election. And, I pity the (true ignorant) many who never even resister to practice this inalienable RIGHT. I vote, and then, leave the polls at peace, and with the assuredness that that which no MAN has power, opinion, or privilege to determine… will be the result and prevail.

Simply put: This (campaign/election) too shall pass…

The choice of Palin as the Republican Vice-Preseidential Presidential nominee is the most absurd decision in the history of modern politics.

As to Michelle Obama’s thesis, I would ask anyone who is White to attend a “Black University” such as Howard University for four years and then reconsider their opinions concerning this thesis, i.e., use your common sense and compassion if you actually possess any.

We need Obama as President in these troubling times, not some senior citizen who owns seven homes, twelve cars, and hangs out in Las Vegas playing high-stakes **** courtesy of the inherited windfall of his trophy wife.

170. Greg H. | 09.29.08

Take away the partisan nature of comments above and the idiots who claim they know and don’t (YumYum #39 TV was first demonstrated in 1923 and then again publicly in 1925 and officially in 1928 - all within the time frame Senator Biden claimed) and you are left with a very simple question…what does the country need? Despite the spin of both parties in this campaign presidential elections are not about experience. Once elected, a President has the ability to surround him/herself with all the experience necessary to review and resolve the issues of the day.
Presidential elections are about leadership. Who inspires confidence, who has the ability to mix with the leaders of the world and represent us globally, who has the ability to chair discussions and make sound decisions after hearing all relevant viewpoints and perspectives. Who has the ability to command the respect of military, economic and social advisors?
On these points it is clear Sarah Palin lags behind the other 3. John McCain’s judgment is proving to be questionable and Barack Obama is getting on by default.
The reality is none of the candidates have really staked a good claim to the Oval office but it looks like Barack Obama has the edge because of McCain’s poor judgment with the Palin pick. But with 36 or so days to go… the election is very much up for grabs…will a leader please step forward!

Republicans are showing their true colors, all around.

Their rants against the “Liberal Media” are the only thing they have left: and even those are just flat out lies.

The good thing here is that EVERYONE who watches Sarah Palin and John McCain knows what is up: John is LIAR (used to be a good man) and Palin is DANGEROUS.

I’d almost feel sorry for them if they weren’t the ones who have started to ruin our fine country.

Buh-Bye to another VERY bad Republican era. One that will be looked upon by history with much shame, by anyone with a brain.

Shame on the liars. SHAME.

Sarah Palin seems like a nice person. The kind of neighbor you’d trust to babysit your children. You want to pull for her because is an attractive, strong, fearless, determined, charming and confident candidate. Her story is admirable.

Palin has strong social conservative values. That’s great!

She supports the right to bear arms. I agree!

She supports capital punishment. That’s outstanding!

And for the religious right who are “single-issue voters”, Palin is as pro-life as any candidate can be.

Although she is to be admired for being a modern successful working mother, who is likeable for her personality characteristics and values, this by itself does not qualify her to lead our country.

I agree with many of her values, but the more that I’ve seen and heard from Palin, the more unmistakably clear it has become that she lacks the necessary experience and understanding of foreign and military issues to deserve this promotion.

If you cut away at Palin’s rhetoric, there is a surprisingly lack of substance. Few candidates at this high level of responsible ramble more adrift than Palin. Its embarrassing.

It is time for Americans to be honest and objective in answering the question whether Palin is qualified to be our country’s Vice-President – and possible President?

I’ve never been petrified about a candidate gaining office before. But I simply cannot imagine living in this country with Palin as our leader. That’s just how strong I feel about her lack of qualifications and substance.

I feel no different about Palin than if Louis Farrakhan, Joseph McCarthy, David Duke or George Wallace were running for the same.

All of you need to start using fact check sites:

- Neither McCain or Obama are above lying.
See factcheck.org and politifact.org
- Michelle Obama’s thesis does NOT prove prove she hates white people
See snopes.com
- You cannot be against earmarks if you accept them (which both McCain and Obama have)
- Seriously, Palin is “babelicious”??? Are you looking for a date?

The real incomes of middle-class families grew more than twice as fast when Democrats were in the White House than when a Republican was president. And for the working poor, their real incomes grew six times as fast under a Democratic president.

If you think that voting for McCain/Palin is in your best interest and the best interest of this country, do yourself a favor and take your stupid hats off.

Dear Senator McCain,
There was a point in time that I, a Democrat, thought that you would help define and set us on a new direction that would 1) create a partner image with the rest of the free world, not a big brother 2) implement programs that would set the standard for emery independence and 3) work to create opportunity and security for all generations of Americans. I based this belief on your record of voting for the programs you truly believed helped America. I was also very impressed with your constant approach of reaching out to the best minds and ideas, regardless of party.
With your selection of Sarah Palin, I waited to see what you believed she bought to the country. How would she contribute in this world?
As of right now, based on my own observations, I no longer can consider voting for you. The risk is too great. We are at a dire time in our history. With this choice you have made, I can’t afford to put into your hands my countries future, my families future, my future.
John, I truly believed you could fix what is broken in our govt. Your pick of Sarah P has convinced me that either 1) I have so misjudged your ability to pick the best people to do the job or 2) you are now, for the first time in your career, at the mercy of your own party and not your own rational judgment.
Good luck to you in the future. I hope for the sake of the United States of America that it is not as President.

Palin is a joke plain and simple. This woman needs to go back to Alaska where she belongs. She is not ready for prime time and it is pretty safe to say she will never be ready for prime time.

Sarah Palin is a GOOD woman with a big heart, compassion and values, she is not a politician, Nobama is a politician. Palin is failing no doubt. This whole thing is totally ridiculous to have 2 candidates like McCain and Obama as the only choices left. With McCain is will be more of the same, special interests, rampant unchecked and out of control government spending, hawkish foreign policy and diminishing troop levels unless as I think the draft is coming back, more employment going overseas, malfeasance on Wall Street, no health care for the 47 million whom do not have it, probably another 10-12 million illegal latino immigrants added to the 30 million that are already here with the vast majority not paying taxes yet still helping themselves to all the free stuff we pay for. I am sick of this political process whereby the middle class pays for everything and gets nothing!

189. palinwasapornstar | 09.29.08

WOW! You republicans are amazing!!!

Face it: She’s just not qualified to be anything on a national level. When the voters with degrees, (NOT GED’s), actual college degrees are in favor of Obama and the ‘better educated’ counties of each state are all blue what does that tell you?
We need intelligent people to run this country. Not to say McCain is stupid, but he thinks the same way he did 20 years ago, which actually makes him kind of stupid. It’s a different world. The war on terror is not who has the best technology - its an archaeic battle. Cold war is over (he proved his ancient thinking in the debate calling for increased spending on defense contract - why?).
Our failing economy is a direct result of not enough regulation - calling it anything else is ignorant and wrong.
With his age, and the fact that everyone can agree that POTUS is the hardest job on the planet - Palin as #2 is a very scary fact. Look at #3 - Pelossi! I’m about as left winged as you can get, but those two waiting in the wings both scare me quite a bit.

It is very clear, or should be clear, to all that have been paying attention just in the last month, that McCain and Palin=DISASTER for the US and Obama and Biden = hope for this country and our children’s future.

I am sorry, but it was clear in the first debate that if McCain cannot even make eye contact with his opponent, how do we expect him to negotiate and have meetings with world leaders and not do the same thing to them? Do we trust this man to represent our country… I sure as heck don’t. I don’t want this man and especially not Palin representing me and my beliefs.

His first decision (choosing a qualified VP) has failed… and people still think he is qualified to make decisions about us and our country? I don’t trust him. He does not care about the middle class of this country. We need someone who does or we will face severe consequences as a whole. It is time that the rich don’t get richer and the poor don’t get poorer… until we stabilize things. We need someone who can write laws and tax codes that they themselves don’t benefit from, for the good of the people. We need a president that works for the people, not the corporations and big oil companies and pharmacuetical companies.

Please join me in electing our next President of the United States of America, that is if we are all smart here… Barack Obama.

201. john | 09.29.08

I’m beginning to see the light. Bad TV presence,ie. Couric and Palin, equals unfitness. I believe the operative principle is that good news or fairness doesn’t sell; therefore, Couric, Oberman and the like are in the business of creating then sellinng bad news. It keeps the rabble content (still aroused). Now, to McCain and Obama. I have come to realize that style trumps content; it makes for better TV, which is all style over content. Therefore, I am now appalled that an elected Senator would go to Washington to do his job rather than appear on a late night comedian’s show (a graduate of Ball State University). This is a clear violation of style. Obama, on the other hand had to be coached to do his job in Washington (clearly not his first choice). McCain is such a grandstander, the very idea, doing his job during one of the most important times in our economic history. I think Senator Obama confuses his words with reality, and certainly this is a made for TV approach. How about his deeds- Acorn-Wright-no legislation-etc.

Obama did a pretty good job staring McCain down in the debate… and not once did McCain even look his way… and this makes you think that McCain can stare down Putin???? ***? Are you kidding me? He is a pathetic excuse for a leader… he wants to keep using his experience in the military and being a war heroe as qualifications for president, but the simple fact that the veterans by majority do not even support this man should tell you something! The veterans are 22% for McCain and his voting record versus 44% of them supporting Obama… if that doesn’t stand out, then you really need a reality check. Just because you may have voted republican all your life doesn’t mean you have to be loyal to this man, because if you are, I am sorry, but you’re an idiot and all to blame for the failures of the last 8 years your president Bush has “supposedly” ran the office.

I think John Mccain is doing all the right things. He has values and is honestly concerned about Americas future. Where do you get your facts about Obama getting 90% of his campaing money from overseas? That is just a lie. Most of his campaign money is coming from people who donate $20 or LESS! The common people of this country… the onese that need the most help and know who will fight for it.

I think it is silly that you would now NOT watch Letterman simply over him having an issue with McCain calling him up and lying to him about why he could not make the show, only ONE HOUR prior to the time he was supposed to be there. McCain said he had to “rush back to Washington right away” and instead Letterman’s people were able to get live footage of McCain being prepped for another interview w. Katie Courick. Basically he lied to Letterman… and cancelled at the very last minute. VERY PRESIDENTIAL don’t ya think?

It’s obvious that McCain was sliding in the polls and getting a little overwhelmed with the idea of having to actually do more than one thing at a time, which is why he called for suspension of his campaign. I want a president that is calm and collected and thinks rationally. That is clearly not hot head John McCain.

Bushes inexcusable ignorance, he’s became the leader of the free-world and was voted in by American’s who were too busy filling up on the lies and deception of this president by gearing us up for War before he even became president. Now we are in a depression whether or not we believe it. It’s sad as Americans the decisions we make are based totally on gender, religion and not the issues. This whole Palen as Vice president was a fluke so that John McCain could get the vote of all these bitter women who felt that Hillary Clinton would break down barriers and all that nonesense. Hillary was caught in her web of lies and that’s why her campaigne went bust…Then you have all these other American’s who feel that a black man should not be president or could not lead the country or for Race reasons, actually it’s about race. Eventhough he may not be “as” experienced, that does give him the advantage that he won’t go “good ol’ boy” nor is he old enough to have all the skeletons and baggage that the rest of Washington’s corrupt systems has…

214. mknopp | 09.29.08

Well, I don’t know about any of you, but I am voting “None of the above” in 2008. As in Brewster’s Millions, the movie.

The sad fact is that everyone who has posted on this site is correct.

Obama is a crooked, liar beholden to special interest.
McCain is a crooked, liar beholden to special interest.
Biden is power mad.
Palin is in over her head.
Clinton is responsible for the mess we are in.
Bush is responsible for the mess we are in.
The Republicans in congress are responsible for the mess that we are in.
The Democrats in congress are responsible for the mess that we are in.
The Republicans are destroying this country.
The Democrats are destroying this country.

And while the majority of you people are distracted by the political bickering between the one party pretending to be two. The country is still going to **** in a handbasket, no matter which of the terrible choices for president we have been allowed.

So, congratulations, you are all correct. If the other side wins the country will be worse off than it is now. Welcome to the real American political machine, destroying America for close to six decades and counting.

So, if you really want to make a difference why don’t you try voting “none of the above”. Tell the politicians that we want a “real” change, and none of their two bit shams put forward are going to cut it.

Sarah Palin is preparing for the Debate alright. Everything has already been written down for her. To be sure, her handlers plan to answer the questions for her. She will wear a transmitter, possibly an earpiece so as to repeat whatever she is being told. To be fair and balanced, the moderator should have a means of jamming all noises. For the debate she will purposefully have her hair down to hide any listening device. The moderator and the debate commission should take the necessary steps to prevent any CHEATING. Please do not fail America. A clean and honest debate is the only opportunity America can know their candidates, what they really are. The rest of the world is watching this closely. If you fail to detect and prevent any dishonesty and cheating, they will pick it up. That will be a worst damage than George Bush has done to us the last 8 years. Let’s see and hear for ourselves who is qualified to be the VP and possibly a President in waiting, and not from talking faceless heads behind the screen. The debate commission’s credibility is on line. Provide us with a clean and honest debate. Not a lip-sync.

216. Huh | 09.29.08

2 out of 2 interviews demonstrate her utter incompetence. I am terrified that she might become President. We need a qualified man or woman in office, not a beauty queen.

217. JakeD | 09.29.08

> “Paris Hilton is on the program tonight,” he announced. “Unless she needs to rush to Washington to fix the economy.”

Actually, McCain is going to replace Palin with Paris as his VP. He needs to regain the people’s respect.

Obama is a black Ken doll that has someone holding him up and putting words in his mouth.

Obama is such a joke. I can’t believe there are so many people that can’t admit it. He has very little experience, less than Sarah, and the experience he does have is too embarrassing to even talk about.

The sad thing is that he is selling himself as African American and he is neither. He is mostly Arab and White, not African. His ancestors were slave owners. He can’t relate to black people in America even though he tries to by doing things like going to a black church for 20 years. An Anti-American church that spews hatred for our country and for white people.

Obama’s goal is to bring down the United States. That has been his purpose all along. You can tell by the friends he has had over the years. Tell me one friend with the moral character that our country stands for. He has none.

A vote for Obama is a vote for the end of America. All of you that are benefiting from all the government programs - those will be gone and you might have to actually take care of yourself. So you really better think about it. You will be much worse off with Obama because he will take this country down the tubes. THAT IS HIS PLAN!

A maverick is a castrated steer that is wandering aimlessly causing havoc…. nothing more than that.
McCain displays all the attributes of a castrated man as well…he is full of false will and desperation…a lost man.
if you are a fence sitter, just give Obama a chance…the whole planet is teetering on the edge and the last thing we need is more Republican policy. Do you want to keep paying as we are all being forced to pay for the misguided administering of our country. we need steady and calm. intelligent and deep…not erratic, old and unpredictable with tendencies to bad and rash decisions (Palin).
Look deeper than some emotional loyalty to a party as there is too much at stake to have a castrated man running the ship.

223. Jen | 09.29.08

NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN OR PALIN!

Barack Obama was the clear winner of the debate on Friday night, a debate that John McCain was sure to win. John McCain and Sarah Palin are completely out of touch with the American people.

I can’t even see Republicans voting for McCain out of fear that they would get Palin. How could you take that chance? How would you explain that vote to your children and grandchildren? Think about it people. It goes much deeper than race, stop being so ignorant and vote for the better candidate, Barack Obama. Stop listening to all the lies spread about this man and look for the truth. He is the best person for the job, especially out of the two we have to choose from. Experience in the military and being a POW does not qualify you for president… just look at what the veterans think about McCain… they know his voting record the best… and they clearly are not in favor!

Why the republicans keep lying to themselves, saying that McCain and Palin, are the right couple to run the government? with all the respect, it seams to me they are a couple of: Lairs, Ignorant, stubborn, retarded, mental disable, below average, insecure full of resentment.

All the fundamentals of the truth appoint and affirm my comments. Why the republicans don’t like Obama? Because:
Hes Black, because he is not a republican, “because he is RIGHT and he is not republican” besides that he is smarter than they are!!!
Who cares about Iraq, we the people don’t gain or will gain anything from that stupid war.
I tell you what is important for us reach or poor:
The economy, the price of the gas, to have a source of income before the invasion of Iraq, we had peace and a good economy.

Don’t be too critical of the candidates. It is NOT their fault they act like clowns. In a democracy, political candidates and the elected as well, are a reflection of the voters - YOURSELF.

I had a hearty laugh the other day. I went to a dinner and was surrounded by Republicans talking about how McCain had won the first debate. -About 20 people in total. I stayed up to watch the debate first hand and thought it was pretty much a tie, nothing spectacular, so the rest of the conversation went like this:

Me: “Really, you thought McCain won the debate? What did he say that you liked the most?”
The Whole Group: “Fox News says he really gave it to Obama.”
Me: “Did any of you actually *watch* the debate?”
The Whole Group: –Silence–
Me: “Am I the only one here who actually *watched* the debate?”
The Whole Group: –Silence–

I think that pretty much sums up any remaining Republicans still voting for McCain.

-I’m an independent by the way.

For all you McCain and Obama supporters alike! We our facing our worst crisis as a country that I’ve seen in my lifetime. Showing your lack of judgement by name calling isn’t going to solve any of our problems. Having someone in the White House that is pragmatic and who is willing to take on the world mess caused by the Neo-cons in a thought-out, sensible, rational and intelligent manner is what we need. So far, I haven’t seen that side of John McCain. Yes he’s a war hero and I respect all veteran’s that have served our country especially those that have given their lives for the Neo-cons sinceless wars. But waging unneccesary wars won’t solve our crisis at home but instead has made us even more unsafe.

I have seen quality in Obama he has shown even with his so called, “lack of experience” better judgement and leadership skills. He has skilled advisors around him to consult before making proper and balanced decisions. He is poised and well versed and level headed. He is smart enough to have gotten an election away from the white house inspite of the odds. For me that speaks volumes about who he is and the character he is made of.

231. Marilyn Jones | 09.29.08

I have this beautiful picture in my head of Todd Palin in the audience at the debates, kinda half liquored-up, watching Biden make mince-moose-meat out of Sarah, jumping to his feat, storming onto the stage, and taking a swing. It would be the best debate moment in history as the Palins turn debate night into a bad imitation of Jerry Springer. Maybe Bristol could waddle up, too, and hit Joe with Twig’s diaper bag.

Well, one can always hope….

234. Angela | 09.29.08

Sue,

Palin smarter than Bill Clinton. He was a Rhodes Scholar for christ sakes.

235. Tim Noe | 09.29.08

History is filled with “Babe in the Woods” presidents, i.e. Abe Lincoln, George Washington, JFK, and even James Polk (yes, look at his legacy). Experience seems to have little impact when confronted with challenges, it’s more about character. On this basis, it’s still hard for me to decide. Palin seems to have the more unblemished record than Obama. Having political savvy is different than having character, integrity and leadership abilities, especially being the President. Biden certainly has the political savvy, but the plagarist of this century may not have the integrity. So far, I’m leaning toward Palin.

236. Chant | 09.29.08

“Words should be spoken carefully and wisely…I think that is what Palin is practicing.”

Really? REALLY?

Here’s what she had to say about the government bailout:

“That’s why I say I, like every American I’m speaking with, we’re ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the healthcare reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh — it’s got to be all about job creation too. Shoring up our economy, and putting it back on the right track. So healthcare reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade, we’ve got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, um, scary thing, but 1 in 5 jobs being created in the trade sector today. We’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.”

Yes, I can see your point. Those are some carefully chosen words.

237. midas | 09.29.08

my wife and i own two good size lots close to the sea of cortez, mexico we had it up for sale until that old man with the blank expression picked the creature(palin) to be the next president, if they win we are moving to mexico

238. Ray | 09.29.08

Aimee… I couldn’t agree with you more. So what if McCain turned down Letterman. We’re on the fringe of the worst economic disaster since the 30’s and Letterman is knocking McCain for prioritizing going to Washington. And so what if McCain stayed and interviewed with Couric? I would say a news interview takes precedence over a talk show and the country’s economy should prevail over all. The worst part is that people will be throwing this “dis” of Letterman into their reasons for not voting for McCain and it will fuel the fire for their voting for Obama. Regardless of the fact that when it came to Obama’s response to meeting without precondition with Ahmadinejad and McCain’s response… well, McCain was right, and Obama was outright wrong. Wrong in a way that could have “dangerous” consequences for the country. Wrong in the way that he was wrong about Kissinger saying so and secondly wrong in terms of it being bad judgment.

Obama has had a career that has been led by the advice and guidance of others, but he has not yet learned how to politically stand on his own two feet. Lets not confuse indecision with liberal. Let’s also not forget about the fact that businesses small and large are slotted to taking on the tax burden of Obama’s proposed administration. So, you’ll have great tax perks if you are lower middle class or lower, but you won’t have a job because the corporations and small businesses will be tightening their belts. I’d rather have a paycheck from a company that can comfortably employ me.

On my own soap box, when was it when there became so many sniveling American’s rubbing their eyes and not taking responsibility for themselves. At what point of time was it when so many American’s came to feel they didn’t have to work for what they want and need? When did self-sufficiency leave the room? The forefathers and building blocks of our country were made up of people who packed their wagons and traveled across hostile indian territory along with no one but themselves to turn to in order to claim a piece of the American dream.

Why should the government get involved with bailing out those without health care? How many people who don’t have health care own an ipod and subscribe to $100+ dollars a month to telecommunication services (cable, cell phone, data plans, etc). How many people who don’t have health care are making car payments on a brand new $13000+ vehicle? How many people who don’t have health care have credit card payments of $100+ dollars or more per month? The fact of the matter is the uninsured want the government to cover their irresponsible financial behavior. If it comes down to making a payment for health care of fulfilling a material want, I’m willing to bet the material want is what is purchased. How many uninsured have actually looked into available insurance plans? You’re probably thinking not many. Now image how many uninsured have looked into the latest ipod or cell phone, are driving a brand new car, and have excessive credit card debt. Go to healthinsurance.org and you will see there are many plans hovering around the $100 per month mark. Friggn’ imbeciles.

239. David | 09.29.08

A couple of things - Don’t underestimate Sarah Palin. She doesn’t have to sway anyone; just keep that close-minded small world Republican base feeling all warm and fuzzy that she is one of them. In a way, that is Biden’s task, as well. I guarantee he will be quite the hail-fellow-well-met, talking about Scranton and his feisty Mom. Nothing wrong with either of them going at it like that. More interesting to me is the juxtaposition of the McCain behavior and the discussion of his gambling obsession. No doubt, he has felt he has nothing to lose ever since his days as a POW. I don’t blame him. I just don’t think it is the attitude we need in the Presidency.

240. Linda | 09.29.08

Some of the comments I’ve read about Obama is truely a show of ignorance on people who continue to say he was raised a Muslim, he is a Muslim, claim his family even say that he’s a Muslim. What have you been reading to get that ridiculous information, “Who Can Tell the Biggest Lie Magazine”? If Republicans can sit back and drool all over McCain and Palin, then they haven’t learned anything since the 2000 and 2004 elections, they just keep on voting for what keeps on destroying this country. It just boggles the mind how many millions in this country never learn.

Yet another post. Palin flundered in her interviews and she’s been thrown into an element that is wholly outside of her box. But I’m confident she will pick things up quickly and she has demonstrated backbone, backbone in uprooting entrenched bureaucracies, and standing up against special interests; reasons why McCain selected her to begin with. I honestly think she has more backbone than Obama. She has proven an ability to move on her own two feet, something that Obama has yet to do and demonstrate. If I’m right, she’s going to knock the socks of the debate and it should be at least or just as scripted as Obama’s. Obama being on the defense throughout the debate and being wrong on several points I don’t think should be considered a win or even a draw. Who cares if he was calm. He did stutter a few times and was flustered. But who cares about that either. His foreign policy was scripted when he wasn’t being dangerous or wrong, and let alone his ability to account for how he is going to pay for his administration. The hypocrisy is rampant, because had McCain said “You’re right” as many times to Obama as Obama said to McCain, it would have fueled the fire for Obama and weakened McCain. But, those in favor of Obama fail to realize that nor are they able to see how that weakened Obama. There’s nothing wrong with conceding to someone, but then again when that person is right. McCain was right. Nevertheless, are all you Obama-ites prepared to give Palin the same concessions as you gave Obama? If she can handle the script well enough and remain calm, and be wrong on several ocassions, by your considerations it should be a win.

243. Aimee | 09.29.08

Boycott America you are right. A vote for Obama would equal the end of America and I am glad someone finally said it! mknoop you are right too, no matter who wins this election the end result will be the same. That is why I am a registered “independent” voter. Fortunatly for me, obama vs. mccain is alot easier for me to figure out than gore vs bush was. Thanks for the support Ray. I agree with all your points as well. MCCAIN/PALIN ‘08

244. Ray | 09.29.08

Linda, I humbly retort, that small government is good government and I will do what I can to fight against paying for big government, be it through a shrinking salary (raises or lack thereof), joblessness, or higher taxes. You’re right, there are many in this country that never learn. They never learn how to be truly self-sufficient, fiscally responsible, adults. Which is worse, the fact that the mortgage companies did such risky lending or the fact that so many individuals got into such risky financial situations? I don’t want or need the government to protect me fiscally. I’ll take care of that myself with the help of my employer. The collapse is based on the lending practices, but also the mortgage holders who have their 60′ lcd tvs, brand new cars, ipods, and more-house-than-they-can-afford along with a second mortgage to refinish the basement, $1000’s of dollars of credit card debt and a job that can’t cover everything because they compulsively agreed to the next “You’re Pre-Approved” offer in the main, with no insurance individual.

248. Ray | 09.29.08

MrFact. How ’bout several times during the eight years of peace Clinton turned down the opportunity to take out Bin Laden but didn’t. Clinton squeaked out from under the dot-com crash, accounting scandals, and a lax foreign policy that I believe ultimately led to 9/11. Bush was left holding the bag. I don’t agree with everything Bush has done, but Clinton handed him a mess to deal with and got out smelling like roses.

When McCain makes a speech and the crowd cheers, it sounds like adults cheering. When Obama makes a speech and his supporters cheer, it sounds like a Jonas Brothers concert. I prefer mature, reasoned crowds that don’t pin their happiness on socialist policies rather than the groups who are always wondering how they can redistribute income from those who earn it to those who want it.
Inner city folks have baggage. One parent households tend to be more of a drain on society. And, of course, it is Bush’s fault.

At least McCain is strongly linked to CAGW–Citizens Against Government Waste which is an organization that all Americans should appreciate….oh sorry…except Democrats and George Bush…

255. Khan | 09.29.08

It’s one thing to make a gaffe. But Sarah Palin’s insults the intelligence of the American people. This is not American Idol where even the worst singer gets his chance in the limelight.

But I agree though that the expectations have been set so low that even if she scrapes through it would be considered a victory, which makes me want to hope that the interview was staged to look bad as a part of a strategy. Otherwise, it is beyond me to understand why she is a running mate for John, who honestly showed a lot of power in his debate (albeit including a few lies).

256. TheGoodStuff08 | 09.29.08

I am shocked at some of the idiotic stabs that are taken at Obama. How low have we sunk America??? Some feel justified in passing judgment on Obama because of his NAME??? Please. Or the fact that he doesn’t have alot of experience. Some of the Greats of Presidential past never ran for frickin’ office until the Presidential ticket. All I can say is, let’s review the facts shall we?
- Is anyone other than myself tired of the way this country has been run for the past 8 years? We are in economic ruin. Its called a RECESSION for those still in denial about it. We have handed over our country to the global economy with both hands while we shut our eyes. We need leaders that will think of Americans FIRST and their pockets later. Oh yeah, Bush ENDORSED McCain. And McCain is PROUD of it. As far as I see it, same administrative monkeys, different administrative name.
- Palin is an idiot. I’m a girl so I can say it without being called a “strong woman hater.” Please. All that woman has done is be ambitious and do what she needed to get to the top. Even if that means exploiting her family’s dirty laundry to do so. I feel sorry for Bristol. Palin’s barely a mom. Not that I think that affects her political vampirism any.
- People, we need to see past Palin’s gender! The only, ONLY reason she was nominated was Alaska’s only profiting venture: OIL. Does ANWR ring a bell to anyone? Palin is nothing but a pawn.
- Ask yourselves, America? Is Palin ready to be president?? McCain is old. He’s got one foot in the grave in the grave and anothr on a banana peel. He’ll be the oldest president to be elected. Hopefully he won’t repeat the Mistake of W.H.Harrison and try to prove he isn’t too old for the job.

America, let’s vote for who’ll do best. Not for politics. The Republicans have run this country to the ground and are excavating land to drive it down even deeper ($700 billion deeper). Anybody want an extra 4 yours of that????
No thank you. I can do better, American can do better, and my children and elderly DESERVE better!!!

Paul Stewart and followers,

Congradulations. I finally found where all the totally uninformed NOBAMA supporters have been blogging. Anyone that prefaces his opinions with “Biden is Brillant” is obviously smoking the same stuff Slick Willie had in London while dodging the “draft”. Nobama proved he was “lost” at the last debate. If that’s not true the left media would be claiming victory…THEY ARE NOT. Biden will prove he is in the same forest as Nobama Thursday night. The left media again WILL NOT claim victory. Laugh, Laugh, Lettermen and SNL are always full of good jokes. The 2008 Democrat party is full of two (2)BAD jokes.

258. beatnik1209 | 09.29.08

Hey, does anyone remember George W. Bush? You know that, really, really dumb and clueless guy that ran this country into the ground. He didn’t know the issues and couldn’t articulate his ideas to save his life. Iraq, Katarina, economy in tailspin, Afghanistan, etc. You must remember him – He’s still president for crying out loud!!!!

Do you really want another W. running things. Palin’s even dumber then W. Can this county survive her being VP – much less President?

What are the Republicans thinking????

259. Brook | 09.29.08

McCain talked down to Obama throughout their entire debate; I’m surprised he didn’t call him “boy.” So the McCain camp can dish it out but they can’t take it, eh? That figures. There isn’t a Republican alive that is able to talk more about what they have to offer than what’s wrong with the other guy, and then act like little cry babies whenever someone calls them on it. Disgraceful.

264. Maria | 09.29.08

Well, Saturday Night Live didn’t even have to make up the material. I saw the show, then watched the Palin interview on YouTube. She really is that bad! Our country is in serious trouble for electing inarticulate individuals without vision who use a populist approach to get elected, then act rashly and without consulting experts of matters of national security. WHY ON EARTH DOES ANYONE THINK WE CAN SURVIVE FOUR MORE YEARS OF THAT? Get out and vote!

265. Mike | 09.29.08

“Bill Clinton became president with no more experinece other than being governor of Arkansas. At least, Palin is smarter than he is and she won’t corrupt the Interns.”
Common now are you serious!?

266. Alex Martinez | 09.29.08

There’s something called “silver mouth”. This is a person that has great communication skills but no substance behind the words. These “silver mouths” are similar to the ones in Walls Street that sold “funny” stuff to the rest of us, and now we are paying for it. But it really sounded good before$$!!

Obama is a “silver mouth” that is selling us nothing of substance but it really sounds good!. Buy now pay later is what it got us where we are now.

Don’t fail for it again!

267. Glen | 09.29.08

Ray (231),

Your words are very well spoken. Although maybe you speak from a different point of view. I want to address your latter point of view first because these are what incited my response. Health care in this country is a mess. I don’t have an ipod, cable television, cable modem internet at my home, or new cars in my driveway (one of which is for sale, not because I can not afford the payment, its paid for, but to buy winter clothes for my 2 children). My health plan at my work (a small business, 46 people) has gone from $120mo to $960mo in 5 years, an 800% increase. Not to mention all my deductibles have doubled in the best case scenario, some have quadrupled. My wife and I have researched private plans and they are good for those who don’t use them. We actually made comparisons with several plans to our previous years usage and found my employers plan less expensive anyway. So when it comes to health care please speak from experience, not from what you do not know.
My income has increased an average of 5% per year, which is above the national average and very close to the rate of inflation(5.37% August 08′). Ray you come across as an inteligent person, you do the math, I was making $45k yr 5 years ago. Has my income kept up with inflation or the increase in health care?
You also spoke of credit card debt. My Wife and I have a couple of credit cards which “were” for emergency. Now that gas has gone from $1.75(March 03′) to $3.89(August 08′) getting to work and putting food in our refrigerator is an emergency. Now, with your intelligence, explain to me how I’m supposed to save for retirement since social security will not be there.
As far as the other comments you made, McCain LIED to Letterman over a silly interview. That is not a great character trait. You stated “Obama has had a career that has been led by the advice and guidance of others” and to me that is a great character trait. To be able to use the advice and guidance of others to promote a positive outcome is what America needs. America doesn’t need a “Maverick” who is going to stand up against what the majority of America wants(see Bush/Cheney 00′-08′) . In my eyes being a maverick(rebel) is not a positive trait. Not when this Country needs careful, well thought guidance to get through this crisis/war.
Ray, I would love to continue but I have to take “responsibility” for myself and my family and get ready for my second job now.

268. ray reyns | 09.29.08

269. ray | 09.29.08

TheGoodStuff08. You contradict yourself. You belittle McCain on his age and then you suggest we select who is best. Is there a connection between age and who will be better at serving our country.

Secondly, both the American people and the mortgage giants are to blame for our current financial situation. I have to respect Bush’s hands off policy. I truly love being liberated from big government.

The Americans who got themselves over their heads and foreclosed are responsible for the current ruin along with the financial giants who bought or brokered the risky mortgages.

Should the government build a guard rail around every four foot high or higher wall or embankment? To what level should the government go towards protecting the ignorance and stupidity of the people? The current ruin should not be the responsibility of the government.

It was all the people out there who got into debt up to their ears and could no longer afford their mortgage payments. The current situation is not a testament to the government, it is a testament to how irresponsible the American people are when left to their own devices. But, would your child ever be able to learn to walk if you never let him/her have the opportunity? How long should you coddle your child?

The American’s who were foreclosed on are tantamount to children who couldn’t handle adult responsibility of managing their finances. They took on debt without thinking of the consequences. To me, that is not the government’s fault that is their fault.

You can’t never compare Palin, with Clinton, She has no “class” she can not sustain a logical conversation, she has 0 (Zero) experience on everything
Besides that is running in the other division ” the retarded division” is worst than Bush, and honestly is hard to find some one worst than Bush.
Even a kindergarten kid know what she now.
Imagine putting a pair of retarded and below average people in the White House
She can not even educate and take care of her daughter Juno.
She should be under a lot of problems with Social Workers in California for not taking care of her kids. I am no kidding
Now you now the movie Juno was base in a real story Palins daughter.

271. palintologist | 09.29.08

Palin just needs to smile and look, well, like any of the women on http://www.womenwholooklikesarahpalin.com and she’ll do just fine.

Both Palin and Biden have a tendency to ramble. Palin is lost in a sea of talking points, Biden lacks an ability to self-monitor. i don’t know if he has no inner-dialog or what. Palin needs to come off as more than an ordinary soccer mom, more than someone who was prepped by the mccain machine.

272. Patric | 09.29.08

Well, I’ve read almost every single comment on here and it seems about 30% of people here still would vote for McPain, i’ll say go ahead. As long as its just 30% of you approving them both.
It’s utterly stupid to still have a reason to wanting to cast your votes for someone who definitely will not make anything better for the middle-class of America. He doesn’t care about the average american, he’s just trying to lie hes way into the White House. I am an Independent, registered independent and am voting for Obama/Biden for sure, take away the presidential candidates and imagine the VP’s as president, maybe that will change your mind.
Some folks here are still living in the 19th century and have that slave trade mentality, you need to get out of your trailers and think very well, Russia has been very calm until now, why? they now have money to fight, while we were been led by a foolish repulblican to Iraq, i served in Iraq dummies, i saw how my fellow marines were been blown to ****, we have no reason to be there, it was GWB’s war of personal vengance.
Our beloved country is now in a more state of calamity from other countries, China, Rusia, N.Korea, Iran, Venesvuela, Afghanistan,Iraq, Pakistan. We have never had these much countries against us in History,
Check yourself before you Wrecck yourself my fellow american

273. Stuart | 09.29.08

Steve,

You’ve suggested (at least 3 times that I saw) that we look up Michele Obama’s college thesis.
As any good mudslinger knows, just make the accusation, knowing 90% of the people within earshot won’t actually look at the document, but join you in your thoughtless belief that she claimed hate for white people. You offer no proof, and most of your audience doesn’t care.
Here’s proof that you are either unknowingly mistaken, or knowingly a liar, take your pick.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/thesis.asp

274. Guy | 09.29.08

I am an Independent who has voted across party lines in past elections based on who I felt was most qualified as I feel all people should do regardless of their party affiliations. I feel both the Democratic and Republican parties are hopelessly corrupt and generally put the interests of their party before that of the country. That is not hard for even the most simple minded of our electorate to see…or so you would think. It is a damn shame that we do not have a viable third party candidate but since the media and political muscle of the two major parties effectively shut them out of our electoral process, we do not. So I will cast my vote for Senator Obama because he is articulate, smart, genuine, and is the best possible choice to take this country in a new direction. It astounds me that McCain is as close as he is in the polls. That so many people cannot see that he will follow the same old GOP philosophy that has been so ruinous for our country. How can so many Americans of low and middle incomes who are hurting so badly, blindly follow a politician who will continue policies that benefit the rich and powerful in hopes that some of it will “trickle” down to them? A politician who wants to give more tax breaks to big oil companies who are already raking in billions and more tax breaks to corporate america as they send the jobs we need overseas? Who thinks the war in Iran was a noble and justifiable cause when in reality it was senseless, useless and cost us over a trillion dollars that we could have used to help our own country in so many ways.
A politician who gave us Sarah Palin as a VP choice? It is truly amazing.
I can only believe that we have a lot of gullible voters who vote Republican regardless, many that will just not vote for a candidate who is half black, and many that just aren’t paying close attention. How anyone could vote for more of the same that we have endured for the last 8 years is incomprehensible to me. But if the majority elects McCain/Palin we deserve what we will get. And it will be bad.
Wake up Americans, go out and register independent. We need to get rid of this two party system. All of our candidates, for any office, should run as Americans, based on what is good for the country and not their party.

275. B17Engr | 09.29.08

What’s wrong with you people?
Are you Americans?
Obama Says there are 57 States!!! (this must be true, but I’m not convinced yet!)
Obama says teach your kids Spanish!(So start learning Spanish your self)

Obama’s friends are thugs!(There are more people killed in Illinois,in one year than Americans for the entire war in Iraq)

Illinois has high crime rate, Highest taxes and one of the highast defecit in
the USA.
AND you want this guy as President. (Obama shouln’t even be Senator!)

Gov. Palin reduced taxes and got rid of people, even in her own party.
AND over 80% of the people in Alaska approve of her.
Obama will destroy America with his thugs that control him.

276. ge | 09.29.08

It’s interesting that the pro-Republicans in this thread are, almost consistently, borderline illiterates. Are there any intelligent Republicans left? If it weren’t for this massive group of dummies, who believe all the nonsense they’re being fed (or at least use it to validate their own prejudices), nobody would be having this argument in the first place.

277. LFforMcCain | 09.29.08

How about skits & articles and comedy sketches for the rest of us. . . where’s the skit making fun of the fact that Biden didn’t know who the president of the U.S. was during the great depression or that he thought television was invented at that time. . . or how about the fact that Obama doesn’t know the differenct between veteran’s day & memorial day. Obama made a speech honoring Memorial Day. Obama claimed that there were many fallen soldiers in the audience. What are they teaching liberals in Harvard? Apparently they don’t teach them the meaning of our most solemn national holiday. Memorial day is for remembering our dead servicemen. Veterans day is for all veterans including the living, the injured and those currently in battle. Far worse then Sarah Palin getting tripped up by liberal feminist Couric.

283. TheGoodStuff08 | 09.30.08

Well obviously my previously stated argument against certain persons was not welcomed. I shall restate.

McCain is a moron. Palin is no Einstein either. Listened to her interview with Katie Couric lately? That is the cut and dry issue.

These are just two more idiotic politicians banking on conservatives who’d rather subject America to 4 or more years of retardation than to elect a Black man because his middle name is Hussein. Very mature.

Vote McCain and get a third term of a Republican chimp-in-chief. Why, he’s even starting to sound like our “dear” President. I like to call them “McCain-isms”:

284. Becky | 09.30.08

Where do you get the idea that Sandpoint ID is one of the most racist towns in the U.S.? Ever been there? Doubt it. I live nearby so I’m sure I speak with more authority than you–this is not a “racist” community. Shall I assume that because you live “in the south” that you are a racist? That’s the stereotype, yunno. And by the way . . . we in small towns have people that love us, too.

285. MB | 09.30.08

Why is it McCain could belittle and be condescending to Obama and that was OK in their debate. Yet, if Biden dare show his knowledge off during the debate, he’ll be demeaning Palin? How sexist is that? And Palin came out today to mock Biden’s career in Congress, saying she’d heard his debates since she was in the second grade. Why is that OK? Why does she get away with belitting comments but, God forbid, Biden treat her in the same manner, then he’ll have lost the debate. The McCain-Palin ticket are sickening in their lying and deceitful ways. God help us all if they are elected.

286. steve | 09.30.08

Look, does anyone stop to think that this congress has been run by the Democrats for the last two years? At least McCain has experience in government. Obama doesn’t even know where the voting buttons are at. He is just a novelty item. When the dust settles and all BS aside, I tink I would trust John McCain with my life long before I would trust Obama. I’m with you B17engr. Wake up America! If the Middle East loves him, you gotta distrust him.

Unfortunately for Palin the most cited piece of political reform in her own state is the removal of her physical presence from testifying on her own behalf in an ethics violation investigation.

288. ray | 09.30.08

Glen,

Thanks for a genuine (and informative) response. You have definitely stepped up in a way that others have not, in terms of presenting more than “Palin is stupid” type stuff. You have opened my eyes to items I did not know or understand. Of course this will require some additional research on my part.

For your comments about Obama moving with the advice and guidance of others, I fear that he will become a pawn, following someone else’s suggestion or advice without having a view of his own. There is a time for diplomacy, but an executive ultimately will have to make a final decision, which I tend to believe won’t be Obama’s. I simply have doubts in his ability to stand on his own…. especially when the majority is leaning one way, similarly to what happened with Kennedy and the Bay of Pigs.

Again, thanks for your response.

As for the rest of you who don’t have enough sophistication that can go beyond, “your stupid if you vote for so and so” you provide little merit for anyone… those more or less intelligent than you. State a case, make your argument, but enough of this “you’re stupid, ignorant, or dumb”. I’ll tell you one thing. If I’ve stated my case, I’m not going to fall for someone who insults my intelligence by calling me stupid. What do you expect to gain from that? “Ah, eureka, hark, I was just being stupid and this person who shed some light on the matter that I was has just presently enlightened me. I will go with what that person goes with.” Sheeesh! Please do take a moment to argue like a person who has enough intelligence to debate who should be the next president. I’m losing a lot of faith in people’s capacity to vote when their only argument is you’re stupid if you don’t vote for who I like. In doing so you’re just demonstrating your own inability to articulate an argument.

289. Hendl | 09.30.08

Have any of you seen the AP news story that when Palin was the mayor of Wasilla Vanilla that she had rape victims pay for their own rape kits!

Hospitals keep rape kits on hand; if a woman comes in and says she’s been raped, they use the kit to get vital evidence. But Palin decided that the town “couldn’t afford” to cough up the $, so made the victims pay.

Yet she didn’t make other victims pay for measures taken in other crimes; for example, if someone broke into a house, and the cops took fingerprints, etc., the homeowners didn’t have to pay for that.

290. Hilah Martin | 09.30.08

I think Palin should be held to the same standard. She says shes ready to step in as President and McCain says the same. Maybe she flunked her 2 previous interviews so she will be held to a very low standard.

291. TheBear | 09.30.08

In reviewing the news this morning I see Palin had another interview with Couric last night - that was a mistake. Was she hoping that Couric would ask her the same questions again? I can see her little mind reeling during the interview…. “OMG, she’s asking me new questions! The devious b****!”. :) McCain was so worried about his cute little sidekick that he came along too to help coach her, but he just got in the way like he did with “helping” with the financial crisis on Wall Street.

292. TaleWgnDg | 09.30.08

I found a link to Michelle LaVaughn Robinson’s thesis (aka: Michelle Obama):
http://www.scribd.com/doc/2305083/PrincetonEducated-Blacks-and-the-Black-Community
It’s an “undergrad thesis” so I guess this is what she wrote to get *** laude. Her major was Sociology with a minor in African-American studies so it makes sense that she would write this paper. It is not a hate paper.

Secondly: The first TV was invented in 1884 but it wasn’t until the late 1920’s for the “modern” television to be developed… 1929 = late 1920’s.

Thirdly: FDR took office as VP in 1933 which is not 1929 but pretty close, methinks.

The probability of Barrack Obama being a terrorist and destroying America — before anyone can stop him — is probably the inverse of the probability that McCain would run America into the ground a la Bush Jr. style.

In my opinion the change that is needed in America isn’t a particular brand of change that Obama is offering but the type of change associated with switching white house parties. Going from a Republican white house to one run by the Democrats is all the change America really needs. Seriously, lets try some higher social spending, the rest of the world does it.

294. rfmac | 09.30.08

John McCain and Sarah Palin like to label themselves as mavericks. It makes me think of that old TV show, Maverick. The main character seemed to have a lot of commonsense. Unfortunately, these two are more like Yosemite Sam and Calamity Jane.

Go Obama-Biden!

295. Remy | 09.30.08

How much of what we are seeing is what is made out of these candidates. I remember when Pope John Paul was in the States. Someone mentioned that they don’t understand all the dressing up of the Pope. The retort reminded me how being the focus changes a person, how they answer, how they appear. “Those robes are a gift made by [locals] the fanfare is the celebration though the Pope prefers little fanfare etc…”

Now, imagine being swept around and coached daily…what to wear, what to say. How could you not doubt and have internal conflict with what you are saying. I see how Obama is confident but I see behind his calculated responses–and I know when he was and was not telling the truth–they guy is a lawyer for Pete’s sake. As for Palin, I can see that her confidence and she is learning the lessons the hard way. What scrutiny she has and it is expected but give it time; you can tell what will rise to the top. Even Bush learned under the extreme scrutiny as he is portrayed as an ignoramus. He went from one policy and outlook in his first term(inlateral) to a completely different on and more successful on in his second term.

No one is unchanging but God. We will see a different Palin before McCain breaths his last and the Government reins are in her hands. Now we must first, worry about our Democratic congress and their grip on the government—that is by far a larger circus a more grave concern for the US than Palin is.

Obama is staunch advocate of the estate tax. He called(QUOTE) “Upon the Christians and the Jewish community to and the Muslims to convene on Washington to oppose the repeal of the estate tax.” –I wonder how he expects farmers to pass on their farm to their kids?? On the other hand it is even more strange that he uses a term called the “ownership society” and opposes things such as health savings accounts and school choice as he says they are like “social Darwinism.” He is more socialist than any other candidate–can you say, HELLO BIG GOVERNMENT–HELLO SOCIALISM

I know what Obama plans for our government and you can bet when this bail out (really, it is an investment–a nationalizing) starts to pay back Obama will have it all spent $$ Hold on to your pocketbooks!

300. Janice | 09.30.08

Have you ever heard this guy speak; it is like listening to a bad Hallmark card:

About himself and another Democrat “We agreed to disagree but..without being disagreeable”–WHAT???

With respect to running for president, “I believe in the basic decency of the American people”–SOUNDS GREAT DOESN’T IT?

from his acceptance speech, “I know that I haven’t spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I’ve been there long enough to know that the ways of
Washington must change.”

About his grandma, “She was a typical white person…afraid of black people”–TALK ABOUT PREJUDICE but I guess that is allowed because he is a minority member; they
have carte blanch to insult without retribution.

from “Audacity to Hope” his book –about religion “I grew up around a healthy skepticism for organized religion and as a result so do I [have a healthy skepticism toward
organized religion]”

MY favorite “I believed Saddam had chemical and biological weapons, coveted nuclear arms, scoffed at UN resolutions and butchered his own people but I do not consider
that a threat to [post 911] America”

“The real threat in to peace in the Middle East is not Islamic extremism, its’ cynicism.” talk about a Pollyanna.

Well, we all know that Obama serves only one small segment of people. Look at his resume at http://www.obamaresume.org. You see how he is so concerned about a particular segment of the nation. He is certainly prejudiced. I say this but then I am just a “typical…….” You get the idea.

303. whynot | 09.30.08

I cannot understand how John McCain thought this person was more qualified than Mitt Romney. I would have even voted for him had be picked Mitt Romney.

304. Michelle | 09.30.08

Because Mitt is a MORMON he would never have gotten the Christian Right’s votes.

As for not voting for him because of his choice of VP?? You have no choice; it is either McCain or Obama. Sorry, it is a 2 party system. If you vote for Obama you would be voting with the same people on this page who say things like “retard.” You would be voting for increased government and more socialized solutions. You would see the government grow larger faster than it ever has. You would be one of the people who, like the Democrats in Congress, is responsible for this financial crisis and the ones to come.

But hey, if you want to say “okay” to what the Democrats have done, their dirty deeds, then by all means. But then your “happy days” dream will be gone. You will have the only respite you deserved–to watch the show of skits where only one in ten is ever even remotely funny(SNL).

305. Remy | 09.30.08

Remember,

It was the Democrat who said “turn out the lights.” It was the Democrats who ran this government into the ground. It is the Democrats who say down with babies “they are a punishment.”

Listen, it is the Democrats who have their little haven in the state of California. Let them have that, the place where people spray paint trees and lay down grass in people’s parking spaces. The home of Hollywood and their big circus. The place God shakes with earth quakes and mud slides. Home of the Gays get a “marriage.” And…they want their Obama the man they compare with Jesus.. the man who calls me a “typical white person.”

Dry up all yee Demos and go home to your country California. Stay out of our national government Go home all yee liberals and your big government ideas. You will always misplace your energy and screw things up. I resent you and your ill conceived ideas.

Maybe this is all a great big reality show and at the end we’ll find out it was just a joke to see if we’d take it seriously. Think about it…have Sarah Palin and Tina Fey ever appeared together at the same place? Maybe they’re the same person….If so, they should tell us, because I think most people would agree that Tina Fey is much more qualified to be Vice President than Sarah Palin! Here’s an idea — how about a Colbert/Fey ticket?! Might as well.

You’re gonna love this one. McCain is a Libra and Libra’s don’t show up. He’s not a maverick, he’s true to his sign and that’s all there is to that. McCain is a no show. Look at how many times he’s not shown up. Don’t call it a shoot of the dice that bunk when you view McCain through a different lense - you know like a NO SHOW lense. He’s not a maverick. He’s a very scared little boy whose father influence (Admiral in Navy) got him C-’s in school. McCain dumped his praying first wife and their children for this Cindy chick he’s married to now and like Cindy Chick said in a TV interview a couple weeks ago she said when asked about the first wife situation Cindy Chick said and I quote “Well John told me that I was the type of women he wanted as a wife and mother of his children, afterall we’ve been married 31 years.” Well isn’t that special? Scary, scary. That’s not why but how he picked Palin. Think folks. Scary, scary.

Obama has voted against minimum wage increases. He has voted against tax cuts for individuals filing $45000 or less or joint returns of $62000 or less… legislation that included increased deductions for out of pocket expenses for elementary and secondary school teachers and increased deductions for small businesses. McCain voted for these measures.

Obama voted yay for a measure: “Vote to adopt an amendment that opposes comments that criticize the honor, integrity, and patriotism of individuals serving or having served honorably in the United States Armed Forces.” McCain, as a decorated veteran of an unpopular war, voted no. Free speech anyone?

It is true, McCain hasn’t been present all the time, but his voting practices are nearly 50/50, yays/nays, while Obama says nay only about 34% of the time, but of those nays were tax decreases for the middle to lower middle class, increased deductions for teachers and small business. His yays include potential violations of our freedom of speech?

McCain has demonstrated discretionary budgeting, while Obama yays most anything that comes across his plate.

If you are interested in losing your rights in the name of the proletariat along with funding social programs, building the economy “from the bottom up”, I think you’re living in the wrong country. Obama’s views aren’t Democratic but borderline socialist. Who needs the wake up call? I’m sorry for all you dems who can do nothing more than ridicule a dissenting point of view. I’m going to vote for McCain based on my love of this country and a sound analysis of what I believe is important and right for the country, rather than going with the flow of the media and the ridicule of bloggers who can only say that if you’re with McCain you must be some sort of red neck. If you’re swayed by peace sign waving hollywood stars and/or your friends saying your stupid if you don’t for McCain with no other bearing you shouldn’t have the right to vote. Oh, my bad, this is America, you do have that right. *gulp*

Obama voted no to repeal funds allocated for international development entertainment expenses…. dinners and such, which made its way into the USAID budget under the Cliton administration.

McCain said yes (get that off the books!). Discretionary spending anyone? Nice to see that McCain is protecting our tax dollars.

Whats the deal? why is it if anyone says Palin isnt experienced the conservative argument is Well o yea what about Obama…

Its becoming a completely obsolete argument because …. Obama was chosen over Hilary(The Shoein for the Demo Nomination) and even by my own admission she is a more experienced canidate.

My point is that people already asked the question is barak Experienced enough?
and in case you couldnt tell the Dems already decided he was.

Now Palin on the other hand didnt go through the rigors of the Nominating process she is faltering under the pressure of just being asked to be V.P .

So the MACRO POINT I am making is Barak has to be technically more experienced as a politican because he was a record of public service and he went toe to toe with Hilary and won with his “limited record”

Sarah Palin hasnt competed against anybody except Sarah palin and yet she cant even handle two interviews. She was handed the Nod and is now proving she cant handle it.

barak was given the Nod and is now Dominating in the polls and is proving He walks the walk and talks the talk.

Palin on the other hand cant even talk…. BURNNNN!!!!

To continue my point ok so what about Barak Vs. Mccain Ultimate experience throw down.

obama knew he lacked foreign policy credentials so he picked Big boy Biden.

MCcain knew he was unattractive, humorless, stiff, unemotional, and worst of all didnt have ***.

Enter Sarah Palin A.K.A *** Magee who has loads of experience in the sack.

My Question is if you are a conservative on this blog Can you honestly say she wasnt a cheap ploy that is now Devistating the GOP without answering my question with a question?

Shoein, as an independent I like to give each candidate each election a fair chance. So is there a reason you’re voting for Obama? What are your reasons, or anyone else’s for that matter? Can those reasons be articulated into some form of an argument? I’d like to hear your arguments because I guarantee you I won’t be swayed any other way. Bashing McCain or Palin just assures me that you’re making an attempt to dissuade me from voting for McCain and Palin by trying to play both the hype and popularity card. Most every dem argument on this post has been void of any real substance other than a bunch of hate mongering for conservatives and downplaying the McCain/Palin ticket.

My personal impression is that you’re swayed by popularity over substance. Someone please tackle Obama’s proposed policies and make a case for why they will be better for America than McCain’s. Do you know Obama’s policies? Do you know his voting record? Explain why his policies are better than McCain’s. Let’s try debating like people who are actually qualified to cast a vote. Is your determination not to vote for McCain based simply on the fact that you don’t like the look of him? What criteria are you working with in voting for a president of the United States? It apparently has little or nothing to do with the policy statements and proposed agenda.

If mccain becomes president. He better be put on life support as protective measure. If he gets so much as a hang nail please have every top doctor in the world finding a cure for it. Put him in an iron lung, monitor his heart 24/7.God forbid any thing happens an palin becomes president.
If something does happen to mccain it will be a major setback for all woman. If she becomes the example of a first woman president. you wont see another in your grand childrens life time.

Compared to Sarah Palin, George W. Bush is an intellectual!
