Media annoyed with Palin talk
By Jimmy Orr | 10.05.08
Are the media really that annoyed with how Sarah Palin talks? Or is it what she’s saying?
A quick perusal of the Internet shows that maybe it’s a bit of both. Even after surpassing all expectations on Thursday night in the debate against Joe Biden (admittedly expectations were quite low), it doesn’t appear that Palin has many friends in the media.
No respect, I tell ya’
The late comic Rodney Dangerfield used to cock his head, grab his tie, bulge his eyes and say, “Tough crowd, I’ll tell ya, tough crowd.”
Although she is a bit more telegenic than Dangerfield, Sarah Palin could easily pull off the same routine if she were to read the nation’s editorial pages. And according to Palin, she reads ‘em.
Too much
The criticism? She’s too inexperienced. She’s not up for the job. She’s a gimmick. She’s way too conservative. She’s too attractive.
Regardless of the specific criticism, one thing seems to unite the critics: her voice. That’s the common ground. Rarely do you read a column on Palin without the author throwing in a “you betcha” or a “darn right.” It’s great material. It gives the very talented Tina Fey a lot to work with as she does her dead-on impersonation of the governor.
Tina Fey
And Fey delivered again last night. Asked by Gwen Ifill (played by Queen Latifah) how a McCain-Palin ticket would deal with the financial crisis, Palin (Fey) responded:
“You know, John McCain and I, we’re a couple of mavericks. And gosh darnit, we’re gonna take that maverick energy right to Washington and we’re gonna use it to fix this financial crisis and everything else that’s plaguin’ this great country of ours.”
Not laughing
Great comedy. But the media aren’t laughing. They aren’t the laughing sort. But it doesn’t stop them from throwing in a Palin’ism or two. Or three.
We’ll start with the Providence Journal. Not only do they not like the talk, they don’t like the walk. Alaska isn’t just for Alaskans, say the editors from the Ocean state.
We were not won over by her irrelevant populist rifts and appeals, the “betchas,” the “darn rights,” the references to Joe Six-Pack, hockey moms or the “kids’ soccer game on Saturday.” We were certainly not amused by her divisive pitting of energy-producing states against East Coast politicians, who by the way, have every bit as much right to oversee federal lands in Alaska as do Alaskans living next to them.
Do you think the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd has an opinion? Always. And it’s scathing…
“Being mush-mouthed helped give the patrician Bushes the common touch. As Alistair Cooke observed, ‘Americans seem to be more comfortable with Republican presidents because they share the common frailty of muddled syntax and because, when they attempt eloquence, they do tend to spout a kind of Frontier Baroque.’
“Darn right. And that, doggone it, brings us to a shout-out for the latest virtuoso of Frontier Baroque, bless her heart, the governor of the Last Frontier. Her reward’s in heaven.
“At Sarah Palin’s old church in Wasilla, they spoke in tongues. Maybe that’s where she picked it up.”
Dick Polman at the Philadelphia Inquirer isn’t that impressed with the Palin’isms either. He, like many, spots a similarity between Palin and a character in a cult-classic.
“Folksy, for sure: ‘…go to a kid’s soccer game…I betcha….darn right it was the predatory lenders…Joe six pack…hockey moms across the nation…a heckuva lot…darn right we need tax relief…now doggone it…’
“After awhile, I started to think I was listening to Marge Gunderson, the pregnant hick cop in Fargo.”
Jon Meacham, although not nearly as brutal as others, still throws in the obligatory Palin-speak in a cover story for Newsweek.
“Perhaps Sarah Palin will somehow emerge from the hurly-burly of history as a transformative figure who was underestimated in her time by journalists who could not see, or refused to acknowledge, her virtues. But do I think I am right in saying that Palin’s populist view of high office—hey, Vice President Six-Pack, what should we do about Pakistan?—is dangerous? You betcha.”
It is safe to say that Marjorie Eagan at the Boston Herald genuinely dislikes Palin altogether. There’s nothing Palin could do to get on Eagan’s good side. Nothing. Ever.
“She is perky, peppy, bubbly, one of those shiny, happy glass-half-full types whose folksy ‘betchas’ and ’shout-outs’ to third-graders and winks would be welcome in the nurse wheeling you from the operating room or the flight attendant reassuring you as your jet bounces at 30,000 feet. Her style would go over great debating for student council.
“But in a person who could be president? It’s just weird, childish, silly, even patronizing, as if we voters are third-graders ourselves. And that relentless chipperness, real or faux? Enough already.”
Even Peggy Noonan, over at the Wall Street Journal, was critical. Not terribly critical of Palin, but appears to be more irritated at the McCain campaign.
” ‘It’s time that normal Joe Six-Pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency,’ Mrs. Palin told talk-show host Hugh Hewitt. This left me trying to imagine Abe Lincoln saying he represents ‘backwoods types,’ or FDR announcing that the fading New York aristocracy deserves another moment in the sun. I’m not sure the McCain campaign is aware of it—it’s possible they are—but this is subtly divisive. As for the dismissal of conservative critics of Mrs. Palin as ‘Georgetown cocktail party types’ (that was Mr. McCain), well, my goodness. That is the authentic sound of the aggression, and phony populism, of the Bush White House. Good move. That ended well.”
Bill Curry, in the Hartford Courant, also brings up Fargo but is over-thinking this a bit. Certainly he’s not seriously believing the Palin-speak is a Rovian tactic, is he?
“Why then did Palin take a drubbing in the polls? It may have to do with the very personality that brought her to the ball. You may recognize it: it’s Marge Gunderson, from the darkly comic Coen Brothers film ‘Fargo.’
For her portrayal of the small-town sheriff forever saying ‘golly’ and ‘you betcha,’ Frances McDormand won an Oscar. So should Palin. The resemblance is uncanny. Some reporter should find out if Palin talked that way before the movie came out.”
Even across the pond over at the Daily Mail, they had their opinions too — although they didn’t seem to get caught up in the Palin-talk, they are certainly more blunt over there. Surprising? Maybe not.
“Crashing bore meets dingbat Mom. That, to be brutal, was the line-up in the U.S. vice-presidential candidates’ debate. … Mrs Palin is clearly not a member of the Beltway tribe. She spoke of foreign presidents like a woman who has just learned to pronounce the name of exotic mushrooms.
“At one point she denied the charge of ‘naiveté’ but made it sound like a range of ladies’ evening garments.
“Plenty to play for, and these two are only the sidekicks. But the score from Missouri, folks: Bore 0, Dingbat 1.”
Not everyone was brutal, however. Ellis Henican from Newsday and a political analyst for Fox News (there ya’ have it) sympathizes with having a prominent accent, but isn’t afraid to make fun it anyway.
“When I first moved up North, I tried to hide my Southern accent. I thought it made me sound, you know, ignorant - like the kind of guy who’d marry one of his cousins and then insist on turning up at the wedding in a baseball cap. I don’t try to hide my accent anymore.
“Winking warmly at the camera. Filling the silence with actual words. Steering the conversation to taxes and energy, the two political topics she’s most comfortable with. It was far from a brilliant debating performance. But the Alaska governor has this much: She beat the low bar of expectations by a North Country mile.
<< Tina Fey and SNL do it again with VP debate spoof | Main“She wasn’t nearly as bad as most people thought she’d be. You betcha, y’all!”

Who “gosh darn” is this Joe Sixpack Palin keeps referring to anyway? Nobody I have ever met previously has ever used it as a term of endearment for middle America. Roughly translated my understanding is that “Joe six pack” refers to a guy who works all day at a regular job and buys a six pack enroute home, and drinks it to relax and go to bed and do sort of the same thing the next day. But 6 12oz beers a day is at least problem drinking by any medically defined measure. And most of the people I take care of even from the most basic of jobs are too tired to drink this much every day. The six pack is usually shared between two people and it lasts a couple of days, unless “Joe” is actually burying his dissatisfaction in alcohol and drinking heavily, and this is not even one in ten of the hard working people I have taken care of. I don’t understand how Palin can look fondly into the camera and smile as if this phrase captures the heart of middle America. A six pack a day is just not your average guy. She’s missing my mark on shared meaning on this one. I find her ridiculous.

Sarah Palin is a REAL person. I will give her credit for stirring up a lot of people who normally may not pay any attention to the election.
- She was asked to serve her country and by golly she is a brave soldier.

If anyone thinks she should be a heartbeat away from the presidency, they need to wake up. This woman was a member of the secessionist group, Alaskan Independence Party. In her debate she said she wants to expand Vice Presidential Powers. And she is already being investigated for abuse of poser. Not to mention she refused to even answer any of the questions posed by Gwen Ifil. The thought of Palin being in the White House should give any American pause.
6. lucy2008 | 10.05.08
You betcha, Mrs. Palin was worse than a north country mile in the debate.
If Hillary Clinton performed like she did, she would never be able to come out in public again. People, this is the office of the vice presidency and has a 1/4 chance of that person taking over the office of the presidency- the most important position in the world in a time of many crises. Unbelievable.
Mrs. Palin mouths idiocy, but “emotive” genius. People, pinch yourselves and wake up. This is so over the top Daisy Duck on steroids. I can just see her “wink” get large like a cartoon wink and the audience goes, “atta girl”. I can just see her throw a big cartoon kiss and the “kiss” goes out to the audience and they “ahhh”. Help me for sure. It is embarassing that this is seen internationally and the follow on reviews are so nutty with the supporters saying she won the debate and is so “likable”.

Her folk jargon is condescending, and it is a joke to consider her a normal and average person… she is a Governor.

Finally somebody expresses what we, the silent majority, the Christian majority, want to express. Palin does represent me, my family, my friends. She expresses our ideas. For example, we do NOT believe global warming is all man-made. We may affect it, but scientists are not sure how much. However, as Palin stated, what we need to focus on is solutions. Finally someone is not repeating, as Democrats and progressives do, the hateful and misleading words against the U.S. coming from Castro, Chávez and other enemies of the United States. She is pro life and she does not apologize for it. She is for the United States and for us, and she does not apologize for that either.

I’m Joe Sixpack, and I find her tone annoying. It is the exact tone that I associate with people who paste on fake smiles and feign laughter at jokes they don’t understand. It oozes the idea that the speaker can deceive you, that her beauty or her phony charm can fool anyone around her. When I hear that tone, I sense condacention, and instinctively react with anger. I really have to wonder who she is fooling. How many “Joe Sixpacks” have a net worth over a million dollars? I am an ordinary middle class guy whose net worth is only about a fifth of Ms. Palin’s, but I can name quite a few Supreme Court decisions besides “Roe v. Wade,” I’ve been to Europe, Mexico and the Carribean, I understand a thing or two about economics, and I believe that protecting the American Constitution (including our right to privacy and the separation of church and state) is far more patriotic than sending soldier after soldier to die in an endless war in Iraq. Most of my friends, working class people like me, are far more educated and plugged in than Ms. Palin thinks we are. And frankly, I don’t want anyone in the White House who knows less about foreign affairs, economic realities, or constitutional law than my friends or I do, no matter how attractive she may be, or how many “golly gee willakers” she spouts. If I were having breakfast in a diner, I might enjoy a waitress who was as chipper as like Sara Palin. But as a Veep? Not in a million years!

Mr. Orr, it almost comical. At a time, journalists distinguished themselves by a “sccop”, excellent insight or by magestic prose. Respectfully, much as cable bought down the standards of network tv, blogs seemed to have reduced these commentators to the lowest common denominator. I swear, I think these prominent writers stay up at night thinking of a more fanciful or creative Palin insult, to trump the one they read in another column. Jim, Ms. Palin is sui generis. They can’t touuch her. Thanks Vin@www.wegotsarah.com

It’s the fact that she’s a libertarian Republican that they hate above all else. If there’s one thing liberal/socialists hate more than conservatives, it’s libertarians who believe in much more limited government.
You think Palin’s been treated bad. Look at how the liberal media has completely ignored former US Congressman and Libertarian Presidential candidate Bob Barr.
Palin is only a moderate libertarian. Barr is hardcore, and he’s being completely ignored by the socialist press.
Palin (and Barr) legitamize limited government views. That’s the last thing they want. That’s why such vitriolic hatred for Palin, and why they’re completely ignoring Barr.

as a registered republican i’m deeply offended by the mccain/palin camp.
not only have they not addressed the issues in a way that would make me believe they have a good plan, they have now started this ridiculous, and extremely offensive attack on obama’s character as if we, the american public, are not aware of the fact that they are trying to divert from the issues at hand.
it makes me want incredibly ashamed to tell anyone that i’m a republican

Sarah Palin is really so ridiculous. I agree, a real dingbat. She is running for VP but acts so silly talking and giving a shout out.
She also as you can see by her speeches- very spiteful and sarcastic.
Probably because thats all she can do besides read a teleprompter and
her cue cards. She needs to return to Alaska and take care of her
dysfunctional family. Shes really unqualified and Alaska is probably
embarrassed by her. Besides, she needs to answer to her Troopergate scandal and her abuse of power. Bush in a dress with lipstick. What a pathtic
senile choice McSame has made. Yikes!
14. Gaias Child | 10.06.08
The problem with the media as a sample population is that they are almost all people who read and write and many of them read and write a great deal with perspectives on history and the presidency and people who have held public office who have inspired appreciation, awe and vitriolic repudiation. So here comes this woman who says she doesn’t have time to read and she’s getting a forum pretty much unheard of before for someone cheerfully aggressive, practically illiterate of history and perspective, and energetically playing attack daughter of fighter pilot. It’s really a Zane Gray novel but he didn’t live long enough to have to see it or write it. Or maybe it’s Jack London and it’s going to be really profoundly compelling in some way. It’s definitely Shakespeare. Such drama as we’ve never seen. The best thing about it SNL.

Have you ever tried to out-wit a half-wit? It is impossible to one-up types like Palin when your best sarcasm, irony, and satire passes like the light of wisdom through their glass houses. As the brother of a Palin-clone, I have learned that one must speak “Salon” with lots of brand-name product metaphors and symbolism to make the connection. If the Obama/Biden campaign fails to win, it will be because its leaders held McCain and Palin (specifically) to standards of intellect they simply do not possess. One should not make the error in thinking Palin is playing dumb while McCain is playing dead. Of course, if McCain were to grimace and wink, one is likely to think he is having a stroke.
Obviously, Palin’s ambition far outweighs her ability and talent. But do not fail to underestimate her appeal. See P. Hilton, J. Simpson, and other dumb foxes. Even if one grants all the partisan politicking slop and media spin, one cannot argue that Palin appears to have studied the gospel from “Legally Blonde” or “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” Knowing you look good, while looking good, is more than enough to sell many Americans. Someone should ask Ms. Sixpack what she knows of mixology. If intellectualism and quality won elections, we would not collectively feel the need so often to take the “morning after” pill following Republican wins.

Wathching the presidential race from Australia, I am astounded that the media comments about Palin are scrutinised in wonderment or with surprise.
Surely, these commentators are merely picking up what it obvious: Palin seems to be comfortable reading from an autocue, or presenting memorised segments of commentary, but has no ability to make comments based on her own knowledge or analysis. When she was pressed in interviews, she failed massively; and in the big debate, she avoided saying anything except for pre-rehearsed lines.
This is just as scary for citizens in other nations, like Australia, as it must be for americans. That someone so ‘maverick’ might be the next VP or President of the most powerful nation on earth might be even more frightening than the current financial meltdown.
17. under-ice | 10.06.08
How long will we be insulted by this? We’re either a part of the folksy lowest common denominator or part of some sort of egg head elite. This is a candidate (and a campaign) that thinks in two dimensions and we should be very afraid.
18. mdodgion | 10.06.08
If not for the press, we would be totally ignorant about what is going on. When, collectively, the press feels uneasy about what they see and report, it is our responsibility to determine the validity of their observations. I consider myself reasonably intelligent. The press only validates my concerns about Palin. THANK YOU, press, for not backing down and continuing to report. It is my responsibility to determine what is sensationalist reporting and what has validity, not yours. Just keep reporting.

I’m way left-wing but find Sarah Palin really delightful, the way she expresses herself and her accent. She comes across as more stable than McCain and probably less dangerous. These men with the father-son complexes should never be in positions of power.

Why America’s Media Elite Women Hate Palin and why they want YOU to HATE her TOO:
It seems the Seven Sisters Sisterhood can’t stand Palin. You know the type…Two kids max, career media moms from Carnegie Hill to Capitol Hill with cell phone yapping Caribbean nannies pushing their crying Masters of the Universe down urban Park Avenues while mama is doing a power lunch.
But the rest of America’s women can easily identify with and look up to Palin… this REAL woman who actually takes care of her own children, cooks, cleans, drives the kids to school, then herself to work, AND governs a state. What disgusts these elite women most is how polished and accomplished Palin is without having the coveted prep school and Ivy background. She is a complete anathema, stranger and outsider to them for not being part of their Sisterhood and not buying into the indoctrination & culture of 70s stereotypical Elitist East Coast Feminism taught in those schools.
Sarah Palin, bright, honest & straightforward, is highly dissimilar to the usually highly connected Ivy bred women that dominate mainstream media. As opposed to these stale, overproduced stereotypical women who are RAISED & GROOMED for POWER, Palin arrives as a breath of fresh air. She’s a truly AUTHENTIC, strong and forceful American woman in the long tradition of accomplished American females like those who contributed SIGNIFICANTLY to the creation of this country and whose time has come to rise to positions of LEADERSHIP…not POWER for power’s sake.
As far as her language…Well let’s just say the precocious don’t talk like that at Columbia of Harvard. Nuff said.

Let’s analyzes the Northern Folks with their higher than though attitude. What makes them so great! Why is it that we put up with them, and tolerate all the stealing that they can get away with and yet fault the others as those stupid people without an education. As I see those reporters and after reading their comments, I fell real sorry for those folks. they don’t know what real life is all about. United States don’t care about them and will not give in to them and their beliefs. After all we have to put up with them–Liberals!
24. Independent Voter | 10.06.08
Sarah Palin hasn’t a chance as far as the media is concerned, but the average person doesn’t give a rip anyhow. Any intelligent person scoffs at the media these days as you never know if they are telling the truth or not. Newspaper subscriptions are down - wonder why! People watch television and many get their news on the internet - how reliable is that! Sarah Palin will do just fine - she is a lovely person and considering that she has been thrown to the wolves, I think she is doing just great. Look at all the dirt that is being thrown at her and it isn’t the usual political stuff - it’s just plain stupid, ugly, dirty politics worse stuff I’ve ever seen. Go Sarah and John I hope you win.

News from IRAN, Arab countries and liberal media all criticised Palin after the VP debate in the same way.
A sure proof that Palin must have won the debate and the polls are false.

This woman is insulting to all Americans when she opens her mouth … but especially to women who do not deserve to have such a low functioning figure set up by a very cynical old man as a ‘device’ to try and become president. I hope that America is better than this but if not then we deserve whatever comes our way.
We are about to pay the price for giving a double term to another low functioning fool in 2000 and 2004 with a global financial catastrophe that will cause untold suffering for millions.
We surely cannot survive giving another pair of low functioning people the reigns of power ……. ENOUGH!

“Gosh Darnit” I live in Florida, and these people think she is just great. That is what really scares me, is she is REALLY just a heart beat away from being the next president of the USA…….And we think we have a mess now! I thought we were really going to get the worst President we ever have had out of the White House. But perhaps i was wrong, I sure hope NOT. I wish we could devide the country into two parts let Mccain and Palin run one part and let Obama and Biden run the other part and in one year which ever one was doing the best job then they would run our country for the rest of the term. That would show (I beleive) that McCain and Palin are truly not fit to run the sweeper let alone the USA. Perhaps then the people in Florida would wake up to the fact it takes a little bit of brains to run the country. remember it took her four colleges just to get a BA in Sports “Writtin” “Gosh” she sure is smart!!!!! Please people take off those rose shaded glasses and smell the coffee before its too late!!!!! Thank you.

Antonio, what were you thinking when she said:
“As we send our young men and women overseas in a war zone to fight for democracy and freedoms, including freedom of the press, you’ve really got to have a mutually beneficial relationship here. With fighting for the freedom of the press and then the press, though, not taking advantage of that and exploiting a situation that perhaps that they would want to capture and abuse the privilege.”
So far, none of you Palin supporters have been willing or able to translate.

The fact is that the only reason Palin was elected as the governor of Alaska is because Alaska is a die-hard Republican state and the last Republican governor had the approval rating of a skunk.
Think about her history.
*Alaska has the highest rate of sexual abuse and violence per capita and, as mayor of Wasilla, she made women pay for their own rape kits.
*As our governor she has billed the state over $17,000 for per diem for days she spent living in her home in Wasilla instead of the Governors residence in Juneau (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/10/us/politics/10billing.html).
*In the state she has a reputation for political backbiting, not reform.
*Granted she decided not to have the bridge to Gravina island built (“the bridge to nowhere”) but she did not return the money to the federal government; instead it was spent on other projects in the state.
*Like all other politicians in the state, she has lobbied Washington for earmarks for the state.
*She was being subjected to an ethics investigation well before she was asked to take the VP nomination.
*It was not her decision to give benefits to same sex couples who work for the state, it was the legislature’s – she fought against it.
She’s not a maverick or reformer – she’s business as usual.
The idea of her being elected as vice president and then possibly becoming the president is unimaginable. She’s not qualified to be the governor of Alaska let alone the VP of the US.

I wasn’t always sure during the debate if it was the real Palin or just Fey spoofing it. It was so close to caricature : the overdone folksy talk, the cute winks, the outright chearleading, changing topics and talking so much in circles that everyone forgot the question, the sentences which not really were…
Doesn’t this say it all : how far down did we sink that we are not even sure anymore whether our politicians are better than a comedian at the act of pretending to be ready to lead this country !!!
And as much as I love and connect with my Joe and Jane Sixpack neighbors, they would not be ready either to get the country out of this huge mess.

I am, and will continue to be, baffled that we have, as a country, gone in a direction that ignorance and a lack of experience are applauded. I completely fail to understand this phenomenon. It reminds of me of grade school: all the smart kids get picked on and the kids with the ‘too cool to care’ attitude win the pick for student council.
Imagine where we could go as a country if intelligence and class were something we valued.

I really don’t care if you like John McCain or Palin, that is not the reason you vote for a president, you vote on who will be best for this nation.
You really don’t have a clue do you. The more we learn about Obama we are finding out he is what America fights against in order to keep our freedom. You better wake up and smell the coffee and do some research for yourself so you can make an informed decision.
Oh yea, during that debate when McCain is calling Obama out on his policies that will destroy America, the look of Obama snickering and his mannerism is just like a common thug, or better known as a street puck. I guess that is want you are looking for to represent America.
Do you know the reason why we are in this financial crisis is because of Obama? He has a huge footprint in this whole fiasco and I hope he has taken a huge chunk out of you wallet for all the left wing BS your spreading around.
As far as being bipartisan, Obama constantly keeps to the far left and has not worked across party lines. Don’t believe what you hear from the Obama campaign because that is what they want you to do because they are all lies. Look into his record yourself. It’s all public record and you can research for yourself. At the same time you can research McCain. What you will find is he continues to work across party lines that best benefits this nation. He has a proven track record. Obama does not. I’m sorry to inform you.
All your looking for is personallity. Your not concerned about substance.
Lord please help us all.

When will the truth about the issues be discussed. The McCain/Palin ticket is a loser with the American people. I see more of the same Bush policies that put this country in the position we are in now. After 911 the terrorist went after our financial system in the country and they have succeded in trillions of lost economic value not only for American but other world economies…

Sarah Palin does not represent me as a Christian. I am a Bible believing evangilical Christian. My Bible says fornication is a sin & so is abortion… nothing is a greater sin or a lesser sin. I agree, all the governor can do is instruct her children to stay pure till marriage & not have sex, but all we can do is again tell people that abortion is mrder & hence do not do it. You cannot make it a law, like you cannot make fornication a crime by law.
Also abortion = murder, just like killing civilians in Iraq in the name of freedom a murder…..
Americans…. wake up…. don’t let the politicians in the name of the Lord… make you pause a while & think…
Thanks to Sarah Palin & her sarcastic remarks… I a registered Republican need to change my vote…

Dr. Donna, I am one of “the rest of America’s women” and the idea of this winking, grimacing, folksy-ism spouting parody of a “real woman” coming anywhere near the White House keeps me awake at night, worrying for the future of our country. Her transparent attempts to identify herself with the average American are insulting to those of us who, like her, had little or no advantage and do not possess Ivy League credentials but, unlike her, have the grace and dignity not to act like some trumped-up caricature of The Ideal American Woman. Authentic? A breath of fresh air? While she is the polar opposite of those women you despise, they don’t represent the majority of American women any more than Palin does. The real American woman has yet to be represented. In the meantime, gosh darn it and don’tcha know has no place in the White House, and it certainly does not represent or appeal to me. I cannot understand how anyone possessed of any self-respect and intelligence can fall for this. All she represents is the last ditch effort of a failing party that was ill-served by its previous choice. Now that she has thrown down the gauntlet by saying Obama pals around with terrorists (ridiculous if you know the facts, and if they’re going there, how about McCain’s role in the Keating Five?) the campaign will reach new lows. More subterfuge to steer the focus away from the REAL issues. Disgusting.

Sarah Palin is making a joke of every mother, who attends one of her children’s games. Constantly referring to hard working father’s as “Joe Six-pack,” does she honestly think this endears her to the “middle-class” families. I am 79 years old, raised during a depression, by hard-working parents, who did whatever necessary, to keep my sister and I clean, clothed and fed. When I watch Hockey Mom Sara on TV, I become sick at heart. I cannot believe we as a country are willing to submit ourselves and our Presidency to this person who acts like she is still trying to win a beauty contest. Shame on you John McCann, for trying to use this woman to win the Presidency for you. I find it difficult to believe that you really believe she is capable of filling the Office of President. Furthermore, I think you are going to be sorry, because you are not going to be able to control Sara’s mouth or her ambition.

When are we going to have a president who knows how to pronounce “nuclear” correctly?
Mrs. Palin only helped herself last Thursday night. She was reciting snippets learned by heart, punctuated by her folksy sound bites, and winks.
She never answered the questions.
It seems that she was told that Anerica can be fooled. Afterall, we were being fooled for 8 years. But what she failed to understand is that we can see right through her.
She came across as unserious, unintelligent and vaguely condescending, as if she somehow thought that the vp debate was a show, a gimmick, a farce. And that’s where she lost me.
There was no humanity in her, no humility, just the overconfidence of someone who somehow knows that the role she is playing is only temporary.
The smart folk say that people do no vote based on VP selection, but how can I trust this farce with my life and my children’s lives, in case McCain were to die in office? Our enemies would swiftly take advantage of this obvious weakness and strike us where it will really hurt.
There was nothing mavericky about McCain’s choice. It was simply reckless.
I will be voting democrat for the first time.

I think these forums contribute to dividing our country. You can hardly read them without getting angry because someone who doesn’t agree with your views types something so opinionated it makes your blood boil and you wonder how they are even able to function if they’re that stupid to have views different than you. Well, we all need to remember, democratic or republican, liberal or conservative, we are ALL Americans and no matter who is elected, we ALL need to get behind that person and see to it that this country becomes great again and we remove ourselves from being the laughing stock among other countries like England and France. If we don’t learn to unite soon, this country will deteriorate even further. Remember, it’s the UNITED States of America.

All of this diversion about the personal attributes of the candidate for vice president is a side-show. Keep your eye on the pea in the shell game… that is what the illusionists want you to do. Have you ever stopped to think why is this so important? Why would the person running for president from one party wantcyou to concentrate so much on the running mate of his opponent? Why? Well, it does keep you from finding much out about the background of the man who so far has not been forthcoming about much of his past. Stop looking at the pea for a moment and watch the hands.
Do the work to research Obama and you will see that there is much for him to hide, much he doesn’t want you to know - until after the election. This man is poison - be sure of what you are swallowing. You had better pay more attention to the man behind the curtain, or you will one day discover that the curtain is made of iron.

Has it occurred yet to all the women are so enamored with Palin that McCain is just using her to try to get elected, just like Palin is trying to use the same gullible voters to get elected?
Why else would McCain have selected someone so obviously out of her depth to be his running mate? It’s one thing to choose a woman, but one who winks at the camera like a ditzy 14-year old running for freshman class representative?
Come on, people, wake up and see this McCain-Palin ruse for what it is. He’s using her. If that isn’t exploitation, I don’t know what it is. Women should be scalding McCain, not praising him.

I am SOOOO incredibly offended by the notion that Sarah Palin is hated by “media sisterhood” women who hire Caribbean nannies, et al. What a bunch of garbage! I was homeless, worked my way through college and graduate school TO EDUCATE MYSELF so that I could PROVIDE A BETTER LIFE FOR MY FAMILY. I don’t have a nanny, my husband is out of work, and I am responsible for my mother, who is ill also. I wasn’t BRED FOR POWER, I earned my position through EDUCATING myself- and I am offended by Sarah Palin, because she, and her followers don’t put any weight in being educated about the world. They believe that if they just are “nice” enough and do the “straight talkin’ to the American people” that they’ll get things done. That’s poppycock- there is not enough diplomacy and straight talk are not the same. Diplomacy requires the diplomat to give and take- while straight talk so far has just been invectives and parroting that V.P. Barbie has what it takes to go back and “get things done.” But no one is saying HOW? She is a disgrace to politics. If it were a man on the podium winking at the camera and “giving a shout out to third graders” we’d all think he was trite, unaccomplished, and pandering. Why do we not think the same thing about a mom with kids and a job?

As I read through the comments I noted, all the supporters of Ms Palin speak in terms of Liberal/Conservative, elite/middle america - in other words, divisive terms; the detractors speak in terms of intellect, fluency in the language, on topic responses, ability and effectiveness in office, international image - in other words, the actuality of public office. It is all fine and well to think your Aunt Marge was a wise woman who often gave the family good advice, but it would be folly to presume Aunt Marge could administer the United States of America. I’m sure Ms Palin is a hoot, and would be a heck of a gal with whom to throw down a sixer or two - the Vice Presidency is not a night out at the local roadhouse, or a backyard barbecue. There is a great deal more on the line with this election than a kid’s hockey game or soccer match.
Like one of the commenters above, I am a middle class worker; but I have been off the shores of mainland USA and we look ridiculous. Like the teenagers in that benighted movie of the sixties, ‘Wild in the Streets’, voting a rock star into the presidency because he was “dreamy”. Ms Palin may be “folksy”, so what?
There is a totally absurd comment above tearing down “the Seven Sisters Sisterhood”- whatever that is. Mostly it is a hate-filled diatribe, passing judgement on women who use cell phones and have a baby-sitter. So you drive your children to school, feed and clothe them? Isn’t that what parents are supposed to do? But this has become the method of discourse by Ms Palin’s supporters - they make a virtue of necessity, and applaud themselves for being so far sighted.
It is devoutly to be wished the recent financial debacle would have wakened my fellow citizens to the reality that what happens in Washington DC matters. Not just your lives, but the lives of your children and your childrens’ children are at stake in this election. And knowing, in your heart, that your family is NOT better off than it was 8 years ago, or even 4 years ago, should assist you in a much needed reality check.

Palin is just another Rove/Cheney Sock Puppet. I can’t wait until Biden is V.P. Obama’s first job for Biden should be to travel to Europe and revive our partnerships there. Gore needs to be put in charge of energy. We need folks in the White House who are a part of the “reality based community.”

Exactly Steve, but Palin is just using McCain as her backdoor to the presidency. You can forget any grand notions of civilized society with these people: They just use each other.

For Lawrence J. Goodrich, The Daily Mail is not a tabloid and if you americans had listened to the British and Interantional Media before the last 2 elections then you wouldn’t have voted that mug G.W Bush into power. Media reporting should always try to be impartial which it clearly isn’t in the states. I recently read of a fox news anchor calling a canadian journalist a pig on national tv because of her criticism of Palin. Its because of your government and media that the majority of you have no idea whats going on in the world.

And what’s with all the implicit adoration of “Mavericks”?
Mavericks are not, generally, “Robin-Hood” figures (take from the rich and give to the poor). No, they’re usually clever people who work in their OWN self-interest.
I guess the label fits. I’m not sure it’s commendable, however.

I don’t care about Palin. My Grandfather fought the Nazis in World War Two, my Father and my Mother fought the communists in the Korean War, and I fought the communists in Vietnam. I will not vote for a socialist/communist or revolutionary leftist no matter what paint job you put on him. America started out as a free country and it should stay that way. People need to wake up here and realize that all of this stuff about Palin is superficial, but electing a man who was raised to despise America is no way to make a statement about how much you dislike the opponent’s pick for vice president. I am not a republican, not a democrat, not a conservative, not a liberal, I am an American. Patrick Henry said it best - “Give me liberty, or give me death!”. My family has pledged to uphold and protect The Constitution of The United States of America, and none of us has ever renounced that oath. Voting for Obama is voting to end two hundred and thirty - two years of freedom in America. Regardless of how I may feel about Mrs. Palin, I will not condone the end of liberty, and neither should you.
Be careful about wishing for change, you might not understand the change that is being offered, and you just might get something you didn’t bagain on being part of the package; like chains.

My appreciation for this current comedy of mannerisms is limited by a sense of mortal time. As for accents, a friend in Boston once apprised me that the only pure American English delivery is found around Albany, New York — and every other permutation of pronunciation is an accent. My ear tells me that Obama and McCain both have speech mannerisms as distinctly differentiated as Palin’s. I would rather spend this mortal time talking about issues, and leaven that work with some vision.

Joe Six Pack said, “”Well, we all need to remember, democratic or republican, liberal or conservative, we are ALL Americans and no matter who is elected, we ALL need to get behind that person and see to it that this country becomes great again….”"
Joe, I’m sorry but didn’t we get behind the “nucular” President we have now? Didn’t we overlook his cocaine and alcohol days? I thought we tolerated his idiotic lack of ability to speak his native tongue because he was our President and we were supposed to be behind him.
Now you’re asking us to get behind another of his cronies who looks, talks and has been known to behave like a playground bully? You’re asking us to get behind the bully’s choice of VP who also pronounces the word ‘nuclear’ as ‘nucular’ and admits that “I’ve only been at this, what, 5 weeks now?’.
Look, for John McCain to graduate in the bottom 2% of his class at 894 out of 898 and then actually become President of the United States is just embarrassing. Also, unfortunately even a monkey can govern Alaska. That’s no mean feat. I mean if an actor can govern California, a monkey can govern Alaska.
Joe, bottom line is…You’re not serious right?

I’m Canadian, and Palin scares me. She acts like a friendly, ditzy waitress, NOT a VP. You have to question McCain’s motives for even CONSCIDERING such a bimbo. I in no way side with McCain, but now that Palin is added to his concoction, it is even more so the epitome of failure. If you think Plain as a VP is frightening, take into consideration McCain’s age . . . If he’s elected, will he even survive his term?? Imagine Palin as the President of one of, if not the most, powerful nations in the world. And taking in the fact that in X number of years, the United States will most likely be at war with the Chinese, or even Russia, Plain in any office position is heart stopping. She’s the governor of Alaska, ‘gosh darn it’! No offence to my northern brethren, but she has little experience in any real office position. Oh, but wait, she DOES have ‘foreign policy’ experience. Here’s to hoping you all weigh in for Obama.

As PROOF -Listen to how she sounds when she is addressing the ALASKA INDEPENDENCE PARTY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4iCDBIAde8
Which voice is the real SARAH PALIN? And why does she choose to speak in one voice to one group of people and in a different voice to another?
and if “Though shall not bear false witness..” how can she righteously
say that she read a NY TIMES story that said OBAMA was “paling around
with terrorists” when it DID NOT say that!
65. Chris | 10.06.08
Since when did Palin become a small-government type? Palin got elected governor partly on her plans to built a natural gas pipeline as a PUBLIC project. It was called the “all-Alaska” pipeline as in for all Alaskans. Only later did she decide to have a private company run the project, and one of her top staffers is a former lobbyist for that company. Her little stories don’t sound so compelling when you hear the details, such as that bridge to nowhere that she supported, then canceled but kept the money. She essentially said that Washington was at fault for giving her the money. And how about the picture of her fishing on Lake Wasilla? It’s a dead lake. Fish can’t live in the lake because of the pollution that she helped put into the lake through lax regulation. Makes for a nice postcard picture, but there’s something else below the surface.
66. Sarah | 10.06.08
Sarah Palin is an insult to hockey moms. In fact, she’s an insult to all women whether they are moose-hunting moms, vegan moms or even non-moms. I don’t think her accent is even authentic. I’ve met people from Alaska and they don’t sound anything like Palin. I think Palin’s accent is an affectation. It’s completely fabricated — it’s her way of expressing some bizarre idea she has of being “folksy.” It’s like Madonna talking in that fake British accent. Laughable, and pathetic.

“Finally somebody expresses what we, the silent majority, the Christian majority, want to express. She is for the United States and for us, and she does not apologize for that either.”
1. The country is based on the separation of church and state so it is not a Christian nation when it comes to being president.
2. If you do want to talk about Christian values then I am very confused: when would Jesus lie, attack someone on character (i.e. obama “palin around with terrorists”), put bounties on animals, fail to protect species under extinction, not focus on the poor, charge rape victims for their own rape kits, lie on tax returns,”pray the gay away from people”, say that “war in Iraq is a task from God” and push for war against anything?
3. As far as global warming she said “the why does not matter we just have to fix it”. Can you please explain how you fix something without knowing the cause? I agree with you that the cause might not be known, but she does not seem to care to use reason at all for anything and find the “why of things”. For example, abstinence only education does not reduce abortions yet she supports it. Why? her personal view, not reason.
4. That is great that she is against abortions (she is not pro-life though, if not she would not be for death penalty or animal killings, war, etc). However this is not an issue of most importance to a country in crisis right now.
5. Economy and foreign policy matter a lot more at this point. Look at her record, she lied about the bridge to nowhere, the amount of energy supplied by Alaska, gas project that has not even started, left Wasilla in debt, said Iraq is the central war against terrorism, etc.
Sorry but no, she does not represent the majority of Americans and

It is worth discussing Sarah Palin because her choice as a running mate shows the horrifyingly bad judgement of John McCain. She is, as Canadian Woman rightly says, a ditzy waitress. Running the country is not about being folksy and just like everybody else. Is that how you would hire anybody for a job that needed real expertise? Would you want a surgeon or a tax consultant who was “folksy and just like everybody else”? Wouldn’t you want somebody who actually knew what he/she was doing–somebody with education, experience, and intelligence? In the debate on Thursday Biden looked like a statesman and Sarah Palin looked like someone who had flunked high school civics and was trying to bluff it.

Wake up America, look at where our once great country has come under the leadership of great orators, silver-tongued devils with their wonderful ability to use great diction and to twist the truth upside down, but these wonderful leaders have lost touch with the vast majority of (every day common people), the people that keep the engine of society running, the people that put food on the tables of the elite snobs that look down their noses’ at us every day common people (the people that the Constitution of the United States refers to as ‘WE THE PEOPLE’), lest we forget the principles of this great document, states that this is a government ‘OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE’.
It is about time that we have a leader that can relate to ‘THE PEOPLE’, a leader that has executive experience in leading a great State and the people of that State must know something about this great leader to give her high esteem in her leadership. ‘You Betcha’ …….. GRIT YOUR TEETH AND BEAR IT!
Wake up people before it is too late, we need a leader that can truly understand the true citizens of this country, and is willing to do what is right, even if it means going against your own party to weed out the chaff, the greed, the power hungry egotist.

Sarah Palin is a joke. She was only selected by Senator McCain because she doesn’t wear pantsuits a la Senator Clinton.
She sure wasn’t picked because of her intelligence or experience because she has none of either. Her knowledge of the economy and foreign affairs is non-existent. Nice going, John. I guess it must have been another ’senior moment.’
If Senator McCain wins, the White House will have a ‘ding-bat’ as vice president who will be a heartbeat away from the presidency. What’s even worse is that Sarah Palin will run for the presidency in 2012 - God help us all.
77. jim | 10.07.08
America deserves better than Palin. She is the monkey on a chain to McCain’s organ grinder. He lets the chain out a little and tells her to dance. If her daily marching orders included promoting the concept that “up is down” and “red is blue”, she would gladly perform. There is no informed intelligence behind the lipstick. She is so uninvolved in the McCain strategy that she had no idea that Michigan was “out” until she found out about it later. What does this say about how McCain and his campaign managers truly view her?

I CAN’T WAIT FOR SOCIALIST OBAMA TO TAKE OVER THE WHITE HOUSE - THEN THE MEDIA WILL STOP DIVERTING ATTENTION WITH PERSONALITY TRAITS (SINCE WE ARE ALL SO PERFECT) AND THEN START DEFENDING INITIAL OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL ECONOMIC BANDAGES WHICH WILL TURN OUT NEGATIVE IN THE LONG RUN.
