Palin appears on Saturday Night Live — no, the real Palin

By Jimmy Orr | 10.19.08

She can take a joke.

The writers of Saturday Night Live didn’t pull any punches just because Sarah Palin was appearing on the show. They kept it up. Had they done otherwise, the show would have tanked. Instead, it was very funny.

And it looked like the much-lampooned Republican nominee for vice president had a good time.

Palin press conference

The opening skit had Tina Fey playing Palin in an imaginary press conference where she attempted to compliment her running mate’s more aggressive third debate performance by saying the cooler Obama “made John McCain sound like a garbage truck unloading trash at a landfill.”

After identifying New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, and California as un-American states (in reference to Palin’s actual remarks that she prefered pro-America parts of the country), the fake Palin stopped the press conference in order to “entertain everybody by showin’ off some fancy pageant walkin’.

In the meantime, the real Sarah Palin was shown watching Fey’s depiction of her on a monitor in the lobby with SNL producer Lorne Michaels.

Alec Baldwin

Enter frequent GOP critic and perennial host Alec Baldwin. Talking to Michaels and “mistakingly” believing that Fey was by his side (not Palin), Baldwin lambasted the Alaska governor, feigning his disapproval that Michaels would actually allow Palin to appear on the show.

“This is our most important election in history and you want her — our Tina — to go out there and stand with that horrible woman. What do you have to say for yourself?” he asked Michaels.

“Alec, this is Governor Palin,” Michaels responded.

Pausing, Baldwin turned to Palin and said, “I see. Uh….. forgive me, but I feel I must say this. You are way hotter in person.  Seriously, I can’t believe they let her — play YOU,” he said with outstretched arms expressing his admiration for her.

“And I must say that your brother Steven is my favorite Baldwin brother,” she countered, mentioning the outspoken conservative member of the Baldwin family.

Dancing eskimos

Palin also appeared on the set for the mock news program “Weekend Update.” Feigning reluctance to participate in a musical skit because it may “cross the lines,” SNL regular Amy Poehler stepped in to perform a Palin rap.

Proehler was joined by a dancing Todd Palin impersonator (clad in snowmobile apparel), two dancing Eskimos, and a giant Disney-like moose who was gunned down repeatedly by Poehler.

The lyrics? Straight from the headlines.

I’m Jeremiah Wright cause tonight I’m the preacha
I got a bookish look and you’re all hot for teacha
Todd lookin fine on his snow machine
So hot boy gonna need a go between
In Wasilla we just chill baby chilla
But when I see oil let’s drill baby drilla

Hey, it’s Joe the Plumber

Even McCain-Palin’s new best friend — Joe Wurzelbacher — was mentioned. They saved the chorus for him.

“All the mavericks in the house put your hands up. All the plumbers in the house pull your pants up,” Poehler rapped.

1. Jeremy | 10.19.08

Just watched this last night - the appearance was hilarious and very needed. Props to SNL for being a little more politically neutral.

2. Lisa | 10.19.08

I am disappointed as I read last week that the NY Times confirmed that Palin was going to be on SNL on 10/25 so I missed it. Will it be shown again? Please let me know!!!

3. LFforMcCain | 10.19.08

I thought the show was a complete dud. It wasn’t funny…it wasn’t anything!…they had a chance to show how good they could be with such a huge audience and they fell flat. But as usual, Sarah Palin looked beautifully presidential.

4. Curt Vance | 10.19.08

Saturday Night Live certainly hit the nail on the head comedically: this was the funniest episode of SNL featuring a real politician in quite a while. But from Governor Palin’s perspective, her appearance seems like a shot in the foot. Both skits were full of significant jabs at the Vice Presidential Nominee. This seemed more like an appearance a political fgure might make after they *lose* an election (like Al Gore’s much-lauded host gig in 2000)–not when they’re trying to win one.

5. hottopics | 10.19.08

The worst VP pick ever. She will be the reason John McCain loses.

6. Duffer | 10.19.08

hottopics? What, are you twelve? The worst VP pick ever. Not even
close. If Mc Cain loses it won’t be because of her. She’s the reason
this election is even this close right now.

7. Amanda Pe | 10.19.08

It was weak. Palin should have just stayed away from the SNL area, and started working on her new career as a morning talk show host.

8. Cailin | 10.19.08

I thought it was lame - Tina Fey and Amy P and Alec Baldwin were very funny but I am just not ready to laugh with Sarah Palin - she frightens me and the idea of Caribou Barbie as President is no laughing matter at all.
Why do the politicians receive these opportunities? They already receive the lion’s share of the attention - let the satirists do their thing - they do not need to pretend to be politically ‘neutral’ (watch FOX News if you want that side of things) or be fair - that’s life in the public eye.

9. Beth | 10.19.08

Sarah was terrifc and beautiful! Tina Fey does a gid job but obviously she is not as pretty as Sarah Palin is.
And Sarah is more importantly very smart and savvy and has accomplished a lot in her 16 years in politics unlike other people running who have served for a hwile and accomplished nothing.

She was a good sport and how Amy did that rap that far along is something!
I am a John McCain-Sarah Palin voter and proud of it!

10. maximaxi | 10.19.08

When I heard that Palin would be on SNL I couldn’t figure out how they’d pull it off. How do you roast her and have her sit there and take it on national TV? How could you get past her handlers who must have approved the scripts? Somehow SNL pulled it off! Sure she came off like she could take a joke, but in the opening scene I really felt sorry for her as Alec Baldwin told her she was a “horrible” person right to her face. I couldn’t tell if she knew Alec would be that intense because she looked a little like, “what did i get myself into here”. Overall I think that SNL was able to have their way with Palin. They got to not only make fun of her yet again, but do it with her sitting RIGHT there. Genius!

Anyway, Palin’s just not VP or Presidential material and most people in the country can see that. Even many staunch republicans know that this was a desperate/risky move to bring her onto the ticket and one that will most likely backfire. If it doesn’t work, that decision will go down in history as just another bad political move by the GOP.

Obama for President!

11. ivana puma | 10.19.08

Poehler was hillarious — i loved the Weekend Update segment…

Palin is a regular gal - that’s why America Loves Her! The MSM will never be fair to her - NEVER! She’s on her own - but that will make her fight all the harder.

And a word to Colin Powell - your opinion means nothing! The FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE must be at the TOP of the ticket …not the bottom. So stop worrying about Sarah Palin’s credentials and be ready to take those 3AM CALLS, if your bro wins (does anyone think he’d endorse him if he weren’t African-American….come on!?!?!?)

12. shtebe n | 10.19.08

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

How interesting–the Palin appearance on SNL gets a LOT more media attention than the Powell endorsement. That should tell you something about the media and the American voter.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

13. aqueryan | 10.19.08

Curt Vance makes a keen insight in pointing out the similarity in tone between the pre-election Palin appearance and the post-election Gore appearance.

And anyone who didn’t think that the cold opening and the Weekend Update “Palin Rap” weren’t laugh-out-loud hilarious is, sadly, a base G.O.P. supporter with an alarmingly deficient sense of humor. Both sketches were nothing short of BRILLIANT.

14. Stephanie | 10.19.08

WAY TO GO ALEC!!!! My sentiments exactly….and apparently Colin Powell’s, and almost ever major newspaper in the US. She should go back to Alaska to pursue her hobby of shooting beautiful wolves from helicopters. She is a disgrace to humans.

15. smiama5 | 10.19.08

She prefers PRO-AMERICAN parts of the country? Give me a break. How polarizing can you be? I guess I am now considered anti-American. Didn’t know that. I’m pretty insulted. Won’t be voting for her - what a jerk.

16. JayK | 10.19.08

I did enjoy Sarah Palin’s appearance on the show, though she didn’t really take part in the skits. I thought it showed a warmer side to the governor, that she is capable of at least acknowledging the mockery out there about her. The whole “I watched SNL with the sound turned off” bit was ridiculous. And yeah, the decision to have Amy Poehler sing the “Palin Rap” was a good call. Poehler was hilarious, Palin herself likely couldn’t have pulled it off, and the YouTube clips of her trying would drag the polls down even further for the GOP. I noticed this article didn’t mention the other jab at Palin. Mark Wahlberg’s skit with Andy Samberg pointed out that just because someone doesn’t like the impersonation done of them, doesn’t mean it’s inaccurate.

17. Jody | 10.19.08

Self-centric Sarah Palin still doesn’t get it that she’s the brunt of the SNL joke. She’ll rail for the rest of her days how that mean, East Coast elitist liberal media (read SNL among them) did her in. She doesn’t yet comprehend that with a significant portion of the lower 48 populace, bullying and posturing don’t replace intelligence.

18. fredini | 10.19.08

LETS HOPE!

19. Campbell | 10.19.08

If the situation were reversed you would never see Obama or Biden on SNL. Palin put her boots on and walked knee deep through SNL’s sarcastic lair without flinching. You won’t see SNL producing a terrorist or socialist skit.

20. Pagan Power | 10.19.08

Let’s see. The guy who lied to the world (Colin Powell) setting the stage for getting us into Iraq endorses the candidate that is lying about everything else. Got irony?

21. MountainSage | 10.19.08

I have the videos up on my blog if you missed SNL.

It was ok….I thought she showed a lot of poise but I didn’t find the skits particularly funny.

22. jeri3 | 10.19.08

It is just a disgrace that McCain chose her for a running mate
I was, in fact, undecided as to who I was going to vote for until that decision..talk about total lack of judgment on McCain’s part…I don’t think he knew a thing about her…
she is about as unqualified to be President of the US as anyone I can think of currently serving in a public office…think “heartbeat away”.

it is completely insulting to all women and especially the many, many accomplished/qualified women that he chose her as a running mate…to think that we women would vote for him because he chose a woman…infuriating to say the least !

I will admit her candidacy has provide me with a lot of entertainment however…
her Couric interview and Sat Night Live especially…just hysterical
she is comic relief and hopefully will just disappear after Nov…The reason the VP debate got such a huge audience was there were so many (like me) hoping to see her fall on her face…all we got was a WINK and a SHOUT-OUT so slightly disappointing…
Without a doubt she is one of the major factors in McCain’s failed campaign for President..
Colin Powell’s explanation for his endorsement of Barack Obama is one of the finest explanations of what the great mayority of informed voters are thinking…

23. ivote | 10.19.08

OK it was all in fun, and Gov. Palin took it in stride. She was genuinely a good sport.

I personally thought the entire episode of SNL was disappointingly lame, save Amy P’s and Sarah P’s stint.

Alec Baldwin is an old, fat, self-important slob— just listen to the abusive tapes of how he speaks to his own children. Oh and I’m one of those voting Democrats from the anti-American part of the country.

24. Anie Beeh | 10.19.08

The “I watched SNL with the sound turned off” happened when she was on a noisy plane probably with staff all around.

25. tony milanes | 10.19.08

Iliked snl last night thought she did very well and it was pretty funny. Idon’t know why the leftist in this country dislike gov. palin so much she seems like a likable tough intellegent woman to me. well lets all keep praying that senators Obama and Nancy and harry don’t obtain power I consider this the perfect storm of socialism. God forbid!!!!!!!!!!!!

26. RonCanada | 10.19.08

Ok Sarah, all is forgiven. You really ARE hotter than Tina Fey. I now support your candidacy for Vice President.

27. Steph | 10.19.08

I am a complete Obama supporter and cannot stand Sarah Palin. However, I have got to say I watched SNL and thought the skits she was in were hilarious. Even though I do not like her i think her appearance actually made her seem more normal… not crazy annoying. She was able to take a joke and even participate in some herself. Even though it STILL doesn’t make me like what she stands for or want to vote for her or mccain i do have to say good job. VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN!!!!

28. Paul Herrmann | 10.19.08

After her “appearance” on SNL, Sarah P is more than a beautiful maverick energy expert and reformer. She is funny.

Funny to be running for VP.

29. Denise Well | 10.19.08

It is more amusing reading these comments than watching SNL or anything about the pres race on TV. Come on, all you INDEPENDENTS, give me a break, you never intended to vote for any Republican. And the Race Card IS being played, but not by the whites-Colin Powell….if he had ever intended to really serve our country he would have RUN for president.

The REAL low point of this race was not the choice of Sarah, it was month ago on THe View when BA BA WAWA said to Sen Obama, “OH, Gosh, can I really say it, (tee hee hee), we think that you are sexy.” Come on fellow women admit it you wanted to vote for a woman so badly, until you found out she was a Republican.

30. Steve F | 10.19.08

I would never vote for Palin for VP (puh-lease), but you have to give her credit for her brave appearance on SNL. I believe that in some way she turned around some of the animosity toward her by showing that she’s a good sport, and can stand tall in the face of ridicule. And, she totally nailed her lines (what few of them there were) without looking stiff! If Tina Fey ever moves on, they should give Sarah a shot for a permanent cast member!

I say this: only in America could something like this occur. Think about it.

31. Nancy Armstrong | 10.19.08

I think all of you who have the cowardice to say such horrible things about Palin, who is definitely more accomplished then any of you, need a muzzle. Palin is not self centered, she is self assured something that makes you all uncomfortable in your ugly mouths and bodies. Shame on you!

32. BlackBart | 10.19.08

smiama5, if you don’t realize there ARE “Pro’American” parts of the country, then you haven’t driven around this diverse country very much. There are still places that have their annual 4th of July parade & everybody in town either participates or comes to watch. There are still places where Memorial Day is more than another 3-day weekend. There are still places where, on Veterans’ Day, we take our kids to the cemetary to put flags & flowers on graves of veterans we never knew. There are still places where people get choked-up & teary-eyed every time they hear our National Anthem sung simply & beautifully. There are still people who are literally IN LOVE w/ this country, literally emotionally involved w/ this country. There are also places where the people would have no idea what I’m talking about. Just because you live, work & vote here doesn’t mean you’re “Pro_American.”

33. Clinton Republican | 10.19.08

Vice President Palin… Not funny - just *scary*.

34. Katrina | 10.19.08

I think it is great that Palin has enough moxy to laugh at herself and a realistic enough view of the world to not take it personally. She is a class act. She took on a crew of people who obviously hate her politics (and frankly some who seem to hate her personally) and didn’t let it get to her. She didn’t say they were making fun of her because she was a woman, or that they were being unfair. She is tough and smart. Two characteristics that have served her well. I thought she was very funny!

35. Mckenzie | 10.19.08

Sarah was awesome on SNL, and she showed she can take a joke. You would never see Obama or Biden make fun of themselves if the table was reversed. I mean yea if Obama goes on they will make fun of Sarah and praise him like he’s the messiah, which is lame. Honestly it doesn’t matter because the GOP is just setting Sarah up to run as president in 2012. There’s already been a lot of talk about it. The only reason McCain is even hanging in is because of Sarah. Why do you think there are shirts that say “I voted for Sarah Palin, oh yea and that other guy?” She’ll be in Washington a lot more in the next four years and will probably work with a program that works with other countrys in energy efficient programs. If Obama’s plan does not work and we are in the same shape we are now in four years don’t think you won’t see Sarah Palin again, and this time she’ll be more poised (than she was in her first interview during her first five weeks) and experienced in foreign policies, and don’t think I won’t vote for her.
Sarah Palin is a GOP rock star.

36. Larry Madison | 10.19.08

SNL used to be funny back in the late 70s. You know, back in the days, when many cities wanted to ban it from their local television broadcast audiences. Although Tina Fey did a great impersonation a few weeks back, the real joke is Palin herself.

37. Dot Thomas | 10.19.08

As citizens from the UK and Canada, my husband and I have watched all the vice-presidential debates and are alarmed at some of the Republican supporters outrage and insinuations regarding Senator Obama’s skin colour. Are we wrong in thinking that Ms Rice (who holds a very high office in the Republican Administration)is also more than a whiter shade of pale? We don’t believe the job will be done badly simply because Sarah Palin is a woman. Maggie Thatcher proved that women can be great as leaders, but Sarah ain’t no Maggie Thatcher in any sense of the word. Sarah is great when scripted but totally useless when asked a simple question that she hasn’t prepared an answer for beforehand. McCain isn’t helping by being in an interview situation with her. This just makes her look even more inept.

38. Dave | 10.19.08

It really suprises me to hear from so many evil spirited leftists trashing Palin. I would venture to say they probably yell at their own children too when THEY express their own differing opinions. This all done from an overstuffed couch with a beer in hand and a cigerette hanging from their face.

39. Jane Armour | 10.19.08

Nancy Armstrong, get a life!

40. Darklady | 10.19.08

I wonder if Palin “got” the jokes she was shuckin’ and jivin’ to during her latest celebrity press appearance. While I applaud her “good sport” attitude, I can’t help but think it hinges on a basic lack of comprehension about exactly why the audience is laughing.

Amazing how big Amy Poehler is with her pregnancy compared to Palin, who didn’t look anywhere near that fecund when she supposedly had her fifth bun in her experienced easy bake oven.

41. KurtLiquor | 10.19.08

Hats off to SNL and Sarah. Great entertainment and creativity. Sarah knows she is a losing cause and out of touch. Sarah is letting McCain’s mis-handlers lead her around by the nose. Sarah was a good sport but a loser nonetheless.

Hats off to Colin Powell for telling it like it is, McCain sucks and is another dumb Bush and intellectually unable to think his was out of a paper bag even when pointed in the right direction.

Once a republican now a democrat. Americans rock regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, wealth and more.

To the Republican elitist, put country first, your racism last, vote OBAMA.

42. NC4SP | 10.19.08

wow. i read every single comment and just can’t believe how harsh some of them were towards sarah palin. i watched saturday night live and although it wasn’t particularly amusing, sarah palin was terrific. not many people can be at a place where they aren’t particularly admired and with that, laugh at themselves when those people are down-right trash talking them and their lifestyles. america is all about freedom. sarah palin is “free” to hunt, fish, love faith…let her do that while you do ‘you’. why is it so hard to accept things about her? i don’t understand why all these liberals can trash talk sarah palin as much as they do and say they’re scared of her or that she’s crazy. why? what has she done? sarah and mccain have shown so much poise and confidence in themselves despite these rude, angry liberals and their constant jabes. sarah showed extreme confidence on SNL. she knows who she is, loves who she is and loves what she does - so much that she does it all the way regardless of what the liberal-crazies will ever say (even if it’s right to her face). sarah palin is a true american and a true leader…that is who we need in washington. in my opinion, obama thinks so highly of himself that when he says he’s doing something for “you”, i’d think twice about his real motives. that’s all i have to say. God bless america and all mccain and palin stand for!

43. Flowerchild2 | 10.19.08

The Governor is a strong leader. She has star power, and won’t let it go to her head. I loved the news skit. I loved how she got into the music at the news skit. Even though she was sitting, you could tell she’s a good dancer. Great moves Governor!!

And…that moose dancing in front of the desk - - hilarious.

44. Alix F | 10.19.08

Palin rocks. Good for her for going on SNL.

45. beaner | 10.19.08

Sarah Palin in not presidential material. Anyone can find out that she wants Alaska to not be part of the United States. Why should anyone vote for someone who doesn’t want to be part of the United States? She also has acknowledged that should she be Vice-President, she wants to overturn certain rights and liberties that she doesn’t agree with. ie:abortion roe-vs-wade. Just because she is pro-life does not give her the right to force it upon everyone. That’s just what she intends to do. It is my right as a female to choose whether I keep my child or not. It is not her PLACE to tell me that I have to.
Oh i’m sorry, it’s ok for her to kill a moose, deer or a wolf. They are someones child, aren’t they?
Can you imagine if something (god forbid) happened to McCain in office and she became president. HOLY COW!!
Everyone is entitled to their opinions. She should keep her opinions to herself and go back to HER Alaska where she belongs!!

46. Mila | 10.19.08

Great job Sarah!!! Some here need to educate themself about her accomplishments as a governor. There is hard work, dedication and wisdom behind her success. She is the only true middle class representative in this race. BO does not have any executive(she handles 20000 employees and 40 bilion budget with a surplus!!!), military (she is in charge of Alaska national guard) nor foreign relation experiance. He has only a thin legislative record (with many presents in it, but do not forget she has legislative experiance too). So, get real Obama suporters. Sarah rocks!!!

47. JayK | 10.19.08

I, also, noted the mean-spirited comments concerning Sarah Palin from the “liberal” crowd. Allow me to point out the similarly mean-spirited comments about Barack Obama from the “conservative” side. As an independent, I don’t vote according to party affiliation, but with whom I think will lead the country best, having looked at the candidates’ stances on the issues. I voted Bush in ‘00 and Kerry in ‘04. As a former 6-year service member, with two tours of duty overseas, I hope none here will question my own patriotism or love of country. I do give props to the governor for going on the show. She was a good sport, and deserves the accolades for that. She is clearly intelligent and likable. However I regard her personally, though, it is her polices with which I disagree. Likewise McCain’s. They haven’t shown any direction they’d take the country, in the domestic or foreign sense, where they would differ from George Bush. Barack Obama and Joe Biden have a clear sense of what they’d like to accomplish in office, and have made their case to America without resorting to indiscriminate mud-slinging. There are some points on which I disagree with the Democratic Party’s platform, but overall, I believe they’ll do a better job. That’s why I’m voting for Obama/Biden, and am working on convincing my life-long Republican mother to do the same. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

For the person who said people should get off their duffs & research the truth about Palin, here’s what many Alaskans already knew about her:

49. Jill | 10.19.08

When is SNL going to do a skit about the high school buddy she hired out of the real estate business to be her agricultural commissioner (whose main qualification for agriculture was that she thought cows were cute when she was young) and paid her well above what she was making in real estate. They could throw in the rest of her five high school buddies that she also hired at well over what they were making in the private sector for grins and giggles.

Palin went on SNL because her handlers told her that it would be good for their image - they were making the rounds of the comedy and late night last week to try to play up their likeability factor. Fell flat for me. McCain was much funnier at the Al Smith event.

50. princess | 10.19.08

the same same cruelty spewed @ hillary has been seamlessly transferred to palin…

i read all these comments - nothing short of breathtaking, considering that the person on TOP of the democratic ticket (yes, that would be Barack Obama) has LESS EXEC experience than the person at the bottom of the republican ticket…

while sarah’s experience is worth debating…the kool-aid drinkers here conveniently pass over their candidate’s complete lack of achievements … and yes, that included foreign policy too!!!

COLIN-SCHMOLIN … he’s just buying into the ‘historic’ element… afterall - not out of the realm that he too be part of the NINETY-SEVEN-PERCENT OF AA’s VOTING FOR OBAMA…

SARAH THE SWEEPER … will fearlessly clean up K Street & Wall Street!!!

The rest of ya need ur mouths washed out with soap - followed by a teaspoon of Castor Oil!!

51. fsteele | 10.20.08

Sarah’s poise and humor in a hostile environment reminds me of Hillary’s! That’s the kind of woman we need in leadership.

Sarah had it right in her acceptance speech: Hillary cracked the glass ceiling, now it’s up to the rest of us to finish the break.

Thanks to Sarah for having the courage to step up, knowing that she would face the same misogyny that Hillary did, or worse! But maybe by electing Sarah, we can teach the sexists a lesson.

52. robert | 10.20.08

Millions on millions of hard working Americans are voting against Obama rather than for him–Latinos, gays, working moms and people in the military. We are voting against the tactics used against Hillary Clinton in the primaries, the caucus frauds and the continued race card tactics used by the Obama campaign. We are not afraid of being called racist. We are Americans who have decided to put our country first.

Sarah Palin showed class & a sense of humor AND a lot of tolerance appearing on a show that has been bashing her for weeks!

Good for her - we need leaders like that!

55. Mike St Jean | 10.21.08

So now the candidates have to provide their medical histories?????
Fair enough, but what about including IQ tests - that would stop Palin in her tracks!!!
