Palin agrees with Biden that Obama presidency will create crisis
By Jimmy Orr | 10.21.08
A rare spirit of camaraderie surfaced today on the campaign trail. Sarah Palin thanked Joe Biden.
In fact, Palin was such a fan of Biden’s recent remarks, she repeated some of them just to make certain people didn’t miss out.
Warm and fuzzy? Nope. It wasn’t a repeat of the Al Smith dinner last week where John McCain and Barack Obama really did appear to appreciate each other.
This was all sarcasm.
Her “thank you” to Biden? For a recent statement he made about foreign affairs under an Obama presidency.
Biden-ism
Two days ago, Biden predicted an international crisis would occur if he and running mate Barack Obama were elected to office.
“Mark my words: It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy,” Biden said. “The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Watch, we’re going to have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.”
Explaining Biden
What Biden was attempting to say according to the Obama-Biden team, was that all Presidents are tested. That’s the nature of the job.
“Sen. Biden was making it clear that history has shown presidents face challenges starting on day one, and with our nation fighting two wars and 21st century threats abroad, we know that we need steady leadership in tumultuous times, not the erratic lurching and stubborn ideology of John McCain,” said Biden spokesman David Wade.
McCain’s interpretation
Because it sounded odd and somewhat alarmist, the McCain team jumped on it, saying that even Joe Biden knows Obama was ill-prepared to take the helm.
Yesterday, McCain responded to Biden’s statement.
“We don’t want a president who invites testing from the world at a time when our economy is in crisis and Americans are already fighting in two war,” he said.
Palin’s interpretation
Today it was Sarah Palin’s turn. At a rally in Reno Tuesday, Palin thanked Biden for the heads-up.
“He told Democrat donors to mark his words – that there were ‘at least four or five scenarios’ that would place our country at risk in an Obama administration,” she said. “I guess we’ve got to say, ‘Thanks for the warning, Joe!”
Oracle
Then Palin outlined four could-be scenarios she could see – of course the end result was all bad. Or as she put it, “would place our country at risk in an Obama administration.”
They included sitting down with dictators without preconditions, sending U.S. troops into Pakistan without that country’s approval, pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq early, and a Russian invasion of Ukraine (based on Obama’s reaction following the Georgia invasion).
Last but not least
She saved the sound bite of the day for scenario number five.
“But I guess the looming crisis that most worries the Obama campaign right now is Joe Biden’s next speaking engagement,” she said.

I dont think that these two republican candidates know how to read and interpret what Biden previously stated. Yes, the Obama-Biden will be tested and a crisis may occur, but in the end, they will succeed! I can trust the Democratic candidates better than the republicans. The republicans made this mess in the first place. Lies, lies, lies. They can not even explain how they will rescue US from this mess.
Obama will succeed, we trust him, he has outlined his plan, crisp and clear.
He will be great, even the greates president of the US and the world.

Imagine each of the four candidates taking JFK’s place in the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Which one you assess as most likely to remain calm, collected, and thoughtful in such a dangerous, delicate and nuanced situation, and which ones would likely end up getting us into nuclear war?
8. Jimbo | 10.21.08
Nice try….Biden clearly highlighted the specific weakness in Obama and it underscores why he is such a risk. He is dangerous, and Biden knows that…He loves this country more than the VP job.

The only thing Palin is good at is spreading fear-mongering. Shame on the Christian Monitor for spreading it around. Senator Obama has been working for two years on behalf of unity.
Senator Obama exemplifies family values. He honors his parents, grandparents, and his extended family in Kenya, Kansas, and Hawaii. He has been married to one beautiful woman for sixteen years and has two delightful young daughters. He’s worked in communities to better the lives of children, teenagers, and families. He respects women and works to uphold their rights. His economic proposals are designed to help and lift up working families. He has detailed plans for a better health care system that will make health care more available and affordable for all families. He understands that families need clean air, clean water, healthy food, and adequate shelter. He has his own Christian faith, but does not impose that faith on others. He leads by example, with integrity and compassion.
In the recent debates, Sen. Obama has clearly stated his priorities. #1: Implement a smarter and more diverse energy policy that would invest in new American jobs, turn the economy around and stabilize world tensions. #2: Health care is a right. He detailed proposals that would emphasize prevention and reduce the grip of insurance and drug company lobbyists.
Across the miles from rural Alaska.
17. Joe | 10.21.08
Folking Americans. You are tired of your boss, so you elevate a mailman to the helm. Obama is a fraud. Time will tell. Untill then, lok forward to your pathetic tax cuts to imrove your marginal lives.
You morons deserve what will come to pass.
18. tdub | 10.21.08
CSM, the context of the Biden message was NOT that Obama’s presence as president will create a crisis, it was that he will likely (like most presidents) face a crisis. This is the sort of lazy journalism I thought the Christian Science Monitor was above. That said, it is ironic that a lightweight like Palin with absolutely ZERO foreign policy experience has nothing better to do than be snarky. This coming from from a woman who promises essentially nothing but more of the utterly disasterous foreign policy legacy of the Bush administration. Why aren’t we asking HER what she would do about Iraq, Israel, etc…. I guess it is dead news because she has nothing new to offer in foreign policy.

“socialism”
Except even socialists say Barack is not a socialist but of course that doesn’t matter to you.
If anyone is engaging in socialism its the current administration and their bailout of corporations.
It is the people that should receive the bailout not rich bankers and corporatists.
22. Danny | 10.21.08
Kennedy was young and he almost brought US to a nuclear war with USSR. With a hindsight, we now know how close it was, much closer than they thought originally.
We need an experienced president with some gray hair, not someone who even did not finish his first term in the Senate - a junior senator that is.
23. Greg J | 10.21.08
The Dems cannot even explain how they will rescue US from this mess either. I have heard nothing that even approaches a coherent, workable plan. Pulling our troops out now is not the answer — if it is a mess, as you mentioned, then it will degenerate into full-fledged chaos if the troops are suddenly pulled out now.
Real progress is being made. But Obama would rather not give it a chance to succeed.
24. JOSEPH | 10.21.08
Biden is scared, just like the rest of us. Obama is dangerous. Biden probablly knows more than any of us just how dangerous this guy would be if elected. Biden seems to be saying do not elect this guy, unless you want a crisis in America.
On the other hand, when McCain is elected,no one will need to test him. People know that he is there to protect America.
Apparently many Obama supporters think that the economics of today came from Bush. But Bush didn’t cause the problem. In 2006 people voted for “change”. In two yeard the democtats have succeded in nearly destroying America. Elect obama and things will get worse.
Blame Bush all you want, but the truth is that the democrats caused the problems.
Joseph
25. Jojo | 10.21.08
McCain/Palin are picking at everything they can instead of running their own campaign based on their own merits. You’d have to be really looking to hear what you want to hear when you go misinterpretting people like this.
26. Tim | 10.21.08
“Don’t speak for all of us. Some believe that socialism is a step backward.”
Who said anything about socialism, Jim? Oh, wait, you mean you actually believe the BS the McCain campaign is spewing in a last desperate attempt to hold on to their power so they can screw us ALL (assuming you’re not, like, ya know, a millionaire) in the *ss for another 4-8 years.
And let me guess: Obama is a big scary Muslim, too, huh?
27. What? | 10.21.08
Don - are you suggesting that every person in America without a college education has no potential??? Education is great. Everyone should take advantage of every opportunity they can to get it. However, America is full of late bloomers and Cinderella stories. Think.
28. Martuni | 10.21.08
Whoa there Palin, Mr.Biden was more than a gentleman when he let you off the hook at that “debate”. That “debate” was a sham or shame, depends on how you look at it. Now you react to a comment and go for the jugular. McPalin does’t know the meaning of integrity. Integrity isn’t forming a mob or gang, it is knowing right from wrong, truth, and sticking to the truth.
29. Dmitriy | 10.21.08
Gov Palin and Sen Biden are not the only ones. That’s all we need now while undertaking 2 wars. I have a feeling if testing will be done it will be by Iran towards Israel. But look at who’s Obama associating with. Those people are not eager Israel supporters.
30. dratiger | 10.21.08
Sarah said McCain could make better decision than OBama, but look at how McCain picked his running mate. Sorry, I don’t see McCain can really make good decision for his cabinet helping him and save USA from the economic crisis right now.
31. tdub | 10.21.08
14. magi | who stated, “And what party holds the majority of seats in the House and Senate? And what have they been doing for us?” This is such ample evidence of the repubs never letting facts get in the way of their truth. You know as well as everyone that the Repubs controlled every major pillar of Gov’t for nearly 8 years. You are another one of those waterheads who pulls out the Clinton card for every past mistake your party childishly denies. I can understand the Repubs running a dirty, misleading campaign–they always do. But how about at least admitting your president and his policies standing on their own–were a dismal, miserable failure.

I am thankful that we are blessed with a well mannered candidate like Obama. He really sets the tone for manners in this race. I feel embarrassed and humiliated by the behavior of the Republicans. When is it ever ok to talk nasty to someone? The Republicans have solidified their platform of hate mongering, name calling, bashing, and low morals. I am inspired by President Obama’s ability to maintain his moral stance even in the face of the ugly Republicans. We are all American’s and we deserve to be treated with some respect. Sarah Palin, if this is the way you talk to people, no wonder your sister had such a hard time in her relationship with Wooden. People that talk like you talk don’t have very healthy relationships. I choose not to let you represent me. I choose Obama/Biden 2008!

I think one thing Mr McCain’s camp could do was to select someone as VP who could at least understand simple English. Mr McCain’s camp failed in that too. She can not understand and does not want to. She knows she is not telling the truth and I am sure if she gets elected (hope it does not happen) she will tell the same stories to American public as VP. She can not name one US magazine to Katie, went school to six different schools complete her Undergraduate degree and supports Alaska Independent Party, and want to be the second person in Command of this most powerful nation world has ever seen. I think I will take a rain check on her advice and may be she can take some lesson in English Comprehension after the elections, as she will have all the time in the world during long Alaskan winters.

I find it telling that Biden said Obama would be tested like John Kennedy. If he truly meant to say what the Obama camp is now trying to spin as, “All newly elected presidents face unforeseen crisis in their first year!”, why the specific reference to only one president. It is evidently clear to me that Biden was referring to Obama’s “unknown, and untested” foreign qualities, that might be viewed by countries like Russia, and Iran as a laissez-faire tendency in Obama’s foreign doctrine.
48. j biz | 10.21.08

Mcbumble and Caribou Barbie are grasping as straws and gaffs to get elected. Really? Thats the BEST they’ve got? Is the black-fearing white conservative right so STUPID that that’s what gains traction with them? ‘Obama is dangerous’…What you mean Joseph is ‘black people’ are dangerous. If you were at all rational you wouldn’t say such ridiculous things. No Bush didn’t himself cause the problems- its true- it took a whole army of corrupt republicans in the house and senate to help him make it happen. And before that it took your precious Ronald Reagan and his sidekick from the CIA- Herbert Bush to kick things off. Do a little homework. Keansian economic policy- which H-bush called voodoo economics before he was Ron Reagans sidekick is all about free markets, deregulation, and unfettered capitalism- which if you look at the world makes some people very rich- and there is nothing wrong with being rich, or accumulating wealth- but look at everyone else- we suffer for it. You suffer for it, I suffer for it- we all do…unless you are that 1 percent of the country that has amassed the great wealth in this country. Dangerous indeed.

@Joseph:
Yeah, go right on pretending that the complete lack of progress in congress had NOTHING to do with the GOP’s cry-baby, Party-over-American attitude and actions of filibustering anything that was even remotely against their pro-corporate, pro-war agenda.
Sure, the Democrats in the House & Senate can certainly do better (showing a bit of backbone would be a start), but don’t for a second fool yourself into thinking that the blame rests solely on the Democrats.
Now that the GOP is well on their way out, I’m for one glad the adults will be in charge and can finally start picking up the pieces.
The Bush administration (and the complicit Congress) has been an absolute disaster, and what’s sad is that even when the adults ARE in power and begin trying to turn things around again for the good, 4-8 years just won’t be enough to get the job done considering how f*cked it all is. Another so-called “conservative” republican will be elected again, and the country will continue to slip further into the abyss, just as it has the last handful of decades.

Has anyone considered that our Constitution has never been so violated as it has been in the past 8 years? This country came very close to a dictatorship - where basic rights were almost lost. McCain/Palin are spreading the same hateful ideas. Why isn’t anyone talking about our Constitutional Rights and how Bush, Cheney, McCain and Palin want to think for us? The quartet is so scary. I say no more bottom of the class Presidents! They are truly detrimental to the American way of life.

Too many of you are running with your blinders on! Funny, nobody is questioning this notion of a “generated crisis” that Biden talked about….and who we have to fear…
Think people…Americans need to stop calling anyone with a contrarian view a “Conspiracy Nut” and wake up to the reality of state-sponsored terrorism, and the existence of the “Deep State” government that runs most countries through deception and terror… don’t believe me… check out what’s happening in Turkey right now…they stopped a coup attempt where government, media, and business elite were trying to cause terror and blame it on radical islam… sound familiar? Lot of people want to re-Investigate 9/11…are they all nuts?
Palin and Biden both know what’s coming… it’s the oldest trick in the book.
65. tom | 10.21.08
I’ll take Biden’s gaffes over Palin’s babble anyday. McCain would be challenged quickly tto. And he would overreact to the smallest thing. He will bring us deeper into war, and debt. 66. Wes | 10.21.08

Has anyone here heard Biden chide Obama for his inexperience and inability 7 months ago. Come on folks Biden said what he said. He meant what he said. He said what is true. Obama in a crisis is a scary and unproven thing. Americans, hopefully, are more sensible than to settle for an Obamanation. If we do we deserve the turmoil we will get!

And so obviously I’m voting against the erratic, headstrong fool runnung at the top of the Republican ticket, and the ignorent, uninformed, polarizing fool behind him.
73. Jeromy | 10.21.08
You people clearly refuse to read entire quotes for context. You got your soundbite and that’s enough for you.
To say that there will be a crisis is in no way saying that it will be created by Obama or by his election to office. Biden simply stated a fact: there will be a crisis, a generated crisis to test the new president. That is something that happens regardless of who takes office. There are crises all the time, and this would be true even if McCain took office.
74. M | 10.21.08
Right on the mark. How obvious, the lack of readiness in the Obama camp. With the Bidenisms which abound, he could write his next book. A joke book.

I do not live in America but I have been watching and following this election campaign night and day as the choice that you American electors make will not only effect your lives but also mine and others around the globe.
I would not be a Democrat or a Republican but would choose the person/team that I thought would be best for myself and my country and I 100% believe that would be Obama.
It scares me to watch another form of Bush (McCain)and an inexperienced potential President (Palin) try to do repaet what Bush has done so well and that is to use scare and doubt to trick you into voting for them.
Is America any better off as a result of Bush and the answer is no and America and the world will be even worse off under McCain and Palin.
77. RobertM | 10.21.08
Fedup hit the nail on the head! The real problem is the Republicans AND the Democrats. The best thing that could happen to this country would be to have a REAL third party, not a fringe party, to where the Dems and Repubs would HAVE to work together for the good of the people, instead of themselves. It really is all about building up political equity and walking lockstep with your party philosophy. Even though I do not support Obama, I applaud Colin Powell for having the courage to not just vote party lines. $150 million collected in one month just to promote a candidacy? This is absurd. And if anyone thinks this outrageous amounts was collected with no payback expected, you are blind. There are some real big players out there expecting something in return if Obama wins (can you say Saudi Arabia?, Taliban? etc.)
78. Web Smith | 10.21.08
Well, you knew that one was coming. If McCain and Palin want to win this election, they had better stop playing games, listen, and join our team.
Our elected public servants are no longer listening to us. The bank bailout is not the only issue. The vast majority of American citizens have been against our continued presence in Iraq, against amnesty of illegal aliens, against more H-1B visas, against the continued shipment of our jobs offshore, and against more government growth and spending, but the government continues to support these things with legislation and to grow and spend. Almost half of us believe that 9/11 was an inside job, but no one is calling for an independent investigation. We want to wean ourselves from our dependence on foreign oil, but Congress and the Senate play with renewable tax credits like they are a volleyball. Who they are listening to is not clear, but it can only be surmised from looking at their lists of campaign contributions.

This article title is extremely misleading, it makes it sound as though Biden said Obama would generate the crisis, which is blatantly false. He was saying a crisis generated in the world (i.e. non-natural) would test the president.

Palin is a very personable person (and I am voting for Obama).
But as great she would be to have a good conversation (she is very funny and pretty cool), she does not give off after hearing her for awhile the sense for me that she is ready to be President.
AS smart as she sounds on occasion, too many memorized lines that sound dopey. And after all this time now on the trail, you don’t get a sense for what her philosophy is on the big, complicated issues.
Senator McCain has run a disapointing campaign; I thought he was a guy that reached across the isle more, and Sarah is not quite filling in the blanks yet. She has a great personality and maybe she will evolve into a serious candidate one day. She has yet to do a press conference.

Enclosed you will see what the middle class has to say :
Democrats = Realists
Republican = Recession
I would rather hear the ugly truth than a lie.
I have been a life long republican, and the only really good job they know well is to make us all poorer.

I will vote for Obama. But how could Joe Biden be so stupid, saying self-defeating stupid things?
86. jack | 10.21.08
So, Obama/Biden can handle complex thoughts, and McCain/Palin turn anything into a sound bite, just like Bush has done. I think my choice is becoming clearer, but just to be sure: How was it that McCain was different from Bush? Oh yeah, “he’s maverick”.
I’ll be so glad when this is all over…

Obama is a confirmed socialist. He will lead this nation towards eventually tyranny and communism. Change we can believe in? No thanks.
89. Ty | 10.21.08
If Palin wants to talk about socialism. How about all the tax payer money going to pay for her per-diem while living at home and charging the state for her kids to come along on all the trips she makes. That is some redistribution of tax-payer money there.

93. al | 10.21.08
Most of us have done it—waved a flag on the 4th of July or wept during the national anthem. But such acts of patriotism are not substantial enough to sustain a nation in crisis.
Wrapping a hot dog in a red, white, and blue bun does not make the hot dog or the customer more patriotic. Pinning a flag to a garage sale sign does not make the sale more patriotic than a sign in fluorescent pink. A bumper sticker does not make the car’s occupants love America more than the car without a sticker.
Patriotism should be a nation leading by example. How have you treated your neighbor next door and your neighbors across the borders? What words have you used to describe your political opponent? How have you cared for your aging parents? What have you done to ease the suffering of others?
Take a hard look in the mirror and do not forget what you see there. The world is watching.
96. Chris | 10.21.08
I would love to have Palin as my VP…for the schools PTA. She is passionate and full of life. But I don’t trust her with much more than coordinating a bake sale. Obama/Biden for me!
97. Black Sheep | 10.21.08
Notice, the comments against Palin and McCain are all snide and trivial, no meat or substance. The comments against Obama have backing and are factual. Obama “is for change”. Yes indeed, as he’s openly said, change in the form of higher taxes, which will deepen our recession to a depression. Change in the form of socialist wealth distribution. Change in the form of us having a president whose friends are felons, terrorists, murderers, Afro-centric racists.
No white person with Obamas negative background would ever have made it as far as he has, politically. The Liberal Left want him simply because he’s Black. This election is all about race. Obama is horribly unqualified and unfit for the job, he hasn’t even finished one single term as a senator.
When 95% of registered Black voters are voting for a Black man, what does that tell you about the true nature of racism in America? I have nothing against a Black person being our president, and everything against this man for the reasons that he’s being pushed into the presidency, as well as for who he is.
99. Pax Vobiscum | 10.21.08
When that crisis comes I think a President Obama would get much better counsel from Joe Biden than Sarah Palin– pretty simple.
100. TB | 10.21.08
Biden is correct, the powers that be in the world are chomping at the bit over this one. Obama went from a self admitted coke head in College, to a community organizer then didnt even complete a full term in the state as a state legislator (which he won by getting peple running against him disqualified, to State Senator (which he had no one from his state running against him), of which he has not completed nor voted on more than half of the votes for his state, now he wants to be a president? He has completed nothing, in his political life. He will be tested and Biden knows it, fortunately he may listen to Biden, hopefully not when Biden is in a typical drunken stooper.
101. Kevin | 10.21.08
Man, the republicans are desperate! I heard Bidens’ speach, the republicans again, twisting words, avoiding the issues, and constantly putting down Obama’s plan. If that’s you’re “real” America, then you can keep it and put it where the sun will never shine! We are the just and moral, the liberals are the ones trying not to be be biased, nor unfair! Republicans are the ones who have been accused of cheating in 2000 & 2004 and calling for “killing Obama,” at McCain rallies recently; shame on you for not even being civil and humane. Democrats respect the position of Republicans, but I feel the Republicans right now, are uncivil, disrespectful, and plain ole’ ugly. Just because you might not get what you want, and a black man will be president. I am a true patriot, I love my country and would die for it, and yes, I am a proud LIBERAL DEMOCRAT! OBAMA - BIDEN 2008
102. Paul Stewart | 10.21.08
Why would McCain fare any better than Obama. He has never been President before either. Nor has he lead successful responses to attacks. I believe Obama has the right character, mental strength, emotional stability and savvy to deal with any outside threat. And win. McCain does not as much have this. He is too narrow, too quick to anger, too emotional, too locked into a military mindset for everything.
Indeed, I think Obama will go out and take the threat by the horns. He will organize and move the forces for good in the world against the dangers in a smart, pre-emptive way. And in an intelligent manner befitting the issues out there.
McCain will just be more of the same of Bush but more so.
103. joe bob | 10.21.08
This is a decision between a tax and spend liberal and the center with some right leaning conservatives. John McCain is the only man in the race with the knowledge, judgement, experience and ability to swing into action day one.
What more could you want in a President. I have listened intently for the past year. Lots of screaming idiots,(get a job or take your prozac) very little real substance. Dang, if you are a veteran (as I am) it make you a little more cautious about giving someone the power of the presidency. Palin needs seasoning, but she will be studying at the foot of a Master. IN energy, very few are her equal. Foreign Policy is very high on my list, but so is energy independence. The Democrats have blocked all energy policy development for years. Too many tree huggers and idealogues for me. I love the environment - who doesn’t want clean air and water forever. It must be balanced by the needs of mankind or go back to the stoneage.
McCain is a go to guy. No worries about him having my back. Palin is someone that is trustworthy and a fast learner. I would rather go with them than have ol’Joe and Barack trying to cobble together a weak government in today’s tough world.
This extremist rhetoric is what you can expect from small dark corners of our great country. Turn on the light, go help your neighbor, run for office… do something besides screaming this nonsense.
104. Joshua | 10.21.08
Please look up the word asinine.
Forget your party affiliation for one second. Forget your obvious hate of anyone who’s not Democrat.
Now tell me. What has Barrack Obama ever done for our country? All he’s done is run for office. And sign his name to bills he didn’t author. He has never goverened anything. Nothing. Not a single thing. Ever. Not once. Qualifications? You really want to go there?
Have you ever owned a company, of any size? If not, you don’t know what it is for Palin to have done so. Have you ever been a governor of an entire state? Nope. Neither has Obama. But Sarah Palin has. Every single aspect of state must be handled by the governor’s office.
The same aspects in New York or California must be managed in Alaska. That’s called a “qualification”. Something Barrack Obama has absolutely none of. Period. Not debatable.
Now if you want to put your party affiliation back on, go right ahead. But such asinine comments that ridicule actual governing experience compared to a whole bunch of nothing are clear. They are transparent. They are the epitome of obstinance and self-delusion. You’ve been exposed Gabe. Evade that.
105. crenshaw | 10.21.08
Go Sarah!
Nobody needs the Democratic handlers to “explain” what Joe meant. He explained it himself quite clearly. Nobody misunderstood Joe. He always gets his point across very well.
Joe Biden realizes now the extreme precariousness of an Obama presidency. The only word Joe didn’t use was “unqualified”. Maybe next time…
106. Rick | 10.21.08
Get a clue people, how can anyone vote for either of the two main parties. People talk about one side or the other being to blame for all of our current woes but has it occured to anyone that nothing has improved in more than two hundred years of voting for the same two parties? All of the liberals want “Change” but they are voting for two currently serving polititians with over 35 years combined service. How is that change? The conservatives are voting for a guy who votes mostly liberal on most of the major issues. You people are nuts! Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Vote third party not liberal socialist party or conservative democrat party.
107. Smithson | 10.21.08
I am continually disappointed by politician’s intentional misinterpretation of each other’s words. Palin’s in this case is especially egregious and desperate. I don’t want “leadership” that willfully ignores reality and tries to manipulate me by providing false spin. We’ve had enough of that.

Which I agreed with 100%. Iran is a real and serious threat. How
could she reduce the dire situation in Iran and Korea by putting

Do people even know what “socialist” means? Examples of socialism in our own society include the police, fire departments, and public schools. Are these dangerous institutions that should be privatized? Do we stand in so much danger from setting up some oversight over private industry that doesn’t work well? Having lived in more and less socialized countries (U.S.A., Japan, Canada, Spain, all of which are on the less-socialist end of the spectrum), I just don’t see what people are so afraid of.
113. varticol | 10.21.08
Go McCaine/Palin, and you wil see an avalanche of world’s crisis. We keep ignoring that the Republican Party has become the symbol of “rich gets richer” here and abroad. The lack of confidence in Bushes administration ability to handle the economy, and in the Republican strategy has already crushed the US market. I hope, you noticed. What makes you even remotely believe that McCain can turn against his own party? And if he does, there will not be a crisis, there will be chaos… McCain cooked his own goose: he tries very hard not to be a GOOD Republican, and and Palin does not know what GOOD means… What a pair!!!

Most voters for Obama are either ignorant or foolish or both. While both candidates are not the best choices that the US could offer voters, Obama is by far the more dangerous. While Americans really want Obama to be the kind of candidate that the country really needs, he is an empty suit with little experience and a fundmental socialist. Yes, Obama has the gift to talk but he is misleading Americans on the economy (he will eventually tax anyone who works and reward lazy people who don’t work) Both McCain & Obama have bad health care plans but at least McCain is more prepared to handle the critical issues of world security. Obama will sell out the US and turn us into weak, lazy pathetic citizens. Do the homework folks, hopefully you are smart enough to check the facts. By the way, I’m not wealthy, and I have incureable cancer. I pray that my children and grandchildren will still be able to live in a country that believes in God and takes responsibility for their own actions. Governments cannot and should not run our lives or business!!!
116. Klondike | 10.21.08
These desperate acts by Palin/McCain are so telling of their campaign.
Republicans just make sound-bites out of nothing.
We need to question this “Ayers” relationship - they know there’s nothing more to say, so they just leave the question out there…
Share the Wealth - since 1920 this country has had a sliding tax scale. They make it sound like Obama wants something new. Even McCain doesn’t support a flat tax.
Socialist Health Care - Obama’s health proposals is far better than McCain’s plan for companies to drop health care and have us foot the entire bill. Remember the demise of pensions? This would be the same disaster!
McCain has NO good ideas so all he can do is call names - he’s a playground bully who is caught in a corner.
117. Mark Bohannon | 10.21.08
Joe Biden did NOT say that a crisis will be created. This is the very reason why right-wing nut jobs are failing on everything from the past 8 years of mismanagement to the current financial crisis. They do not listen to the many voices of reason. Instead, they rely on half-truths and advice from political hacks like Karl Rove, Phil Gramm, and Lush Rimbaugh.
118. Ken | 10.21.08
The last thing we want now is someone who the world think they can test and see if they can tip the balance. BHO has no idea what he wants to do. He may take out Pakistan out of the equation just like he said. Nice stratage BHO. BHO and JB, I see dark coulds all over the futuer of the country. BHO does not care whether we win or lose the war. He will bring the troops home. Dems happy. 10yrs later, more terrorists come and kill more civillians here in this country. BHO…will say…well, I was the president in 2008. Who cares.
Definitely not the country first. All he wants is making a history. What kind of history? First black president. First socialist president. Yep…that is all he wants.

120. Mark | 10.21.08
Why do the Republicans give a rats if we pull out of Iraq ASAP and it becomes a mess? It was a mess before we even got there. Now, we feel morally responsible for cleaning it up and making sure terrorists do not have a “home” from which to build strength. Nonsense! Not only will our swift departure save countless lives but billions of USD that quite frankly, are needed to help us deal with this country’s financial quagmire. For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone living in a red-state would fear terrorists. You should focus your efforts on worrying about your jobs when retail, services and commodities come crashing down because of the Wall Street Terrorists.
121. Newt | 10.21.08
Senator McCain can’t even lead his own campaign. How can he lead America? I don’t think so. The hate and divisiveness they show towards Senator Obama is what they, by extension, will show all the free thinkers who support the Obama/Biden ticket. United we stand. Save America. Save the G.O.P. — fellow Republicans, take a stand and the enlightened path shown by Colin Powell. Join him. Join me. Maybe our party can provide real leadership, intellect and wisdom some day, but today is not that day. For the sake of our Republic — vote Obama/Biden.

so·cial·ism /ˈsoʊʃəˌlɪzəm/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[soh-shuh-liz-uhm] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.
This is the definition, people. Now tell me that this is not what Obama/Biden are trying to achieve!!!
123. mongoose | 10.21.08
In a crisis, Obama would be calm and collected and surrounded by intelligent advisors. McCain has character, but not much else. Most of all, he has bad judgement, like picking of all people Phil Gramm as economic advisor, Palin as VP, and believing that wars can be won on the battlefield. Mc Cain surrounded by shady advisors and with his lurching tactics reminds me of Dr. Strangelove, even down to his injured stiff arm. As for Palin, her resume would fit into a Chinese fortune cookie. She is pure brash and fluff. Times are too serious, unlike the last eight years, we need somebody with intelligence and integrity at the helm.

I used to think that the Government or a Neo-Conservative group planned the attacks on 9-11-2001. I was sold that they needed to carry out a mission that we will never quite understand.
I was dead wrong. And here is why…
In every crime, the 1st question that needs to be asked is this:
“Who benefits from the crime?”
133. WTF | 10.21.08
There are 2 approaches to solving crises of the form “predicted” by Palin. A militaristic solution (McCain/Palin) and a diplomatic solution (Obama/Biden). It must be understood that all militaristic solutions always involve death and a winner-take-all mentality, and that diplomatic solutions always involve studied compromise. The Golden Rule requires that I choose diplomatic compromise.
134. Lew El | 10.21.08
Joe Biden said that they’d certainly be tested. He did not say that they would not be prepared (as the McCain/Palin camp suggests). In fact, the pentagon has been working on transition strategies to help get new presidents adjusted quickly to a number of crisis scenarios that may take place within the first year of their term. Bush was tested with 9/11 (9 months after taking office), Clinton was tested with the first bombing of the WTC (1 month after taking office). It’s been a noticeable trend. Biden understands that, the Pentagon understands that, and Barack Obama understands that, that’s why he’s my choice for President of the United States of America.
135. Dennis Maier | 10.21.08
McCain supporters are sticking by their candidates, all right. To me this shows an admirable sense of loyalty. I just don’t happen to agree with them as to the candidate that is most likely to lead out of this hole we find ourselves in—due largely to the policies of the last eight years but also the past sins of both parties. This is as it has always been since the founders and the way it must be until we find a way to match the ideals of liberty with the realities of the world at large.
What we need now is an honest man in the Whitehouse, one that will not approve torture or other war crimes—including the invasion of a sovereign nation for oil. I don’t think McCain would condone torture (though he did vote for the Military Commissions Act of 2006 that essentially negated the Supreme Courts ban on torture) but he’s more pigheaded than Bush myself when it comes to fixing our mistakes in Iraq and Afghanistan.
What we need is a man who will restore the government to its people and not just the richest one tenth of a percent. What we need is a man who will restore the American ideal of justice and freedom to the world, a man who will seek peace. For in the end, peace is our only hope.
136. ginger snap 1951 | 10.21.08
Hey, give Joe a break. Senator Biden did not put his foot in his mouth this time; the McCain-Palin campaign is using his comment out of context. Look up the full text — Biden said that a President Obama would be tested because history shows that each of the last seven presidents has been tested. For those who miss the point, a President McCain would be tested also. Biden qualifies that Obama is brilliant, which implies he can handle this unknown test. No one calls McCain brilliant, especially since all McCain talks about is carrying a big stick. That would be the same “big stick” that has already helped destroy our economy and over-extended our troops to exhaustion.

Middle class joe: How do you think Obama plans to pay for his 3 trillion dollar spending plan? And Obamas taxes will shut down so many small businesses your head will spin all the way to the unemployment line!
sarah: Republican’s caused this whole mess
we are in. Really!? You can google it and watch video after video of the senate and the house in the past 2 years. Democrat after Democrat name calling and poo-pooing Republican after Republican trying to warn of the coming economic and financial crisis caused by the sub-prime loans that BILL CLINTON endorsed in 1995! They(the Democrats) thought it would be a great idea to give loans to people who weren’t qualified. Well, because everyone should be able to buy a home- even if he doesn’t have a job or good credit! Way to go Dems! Before you go blaming Bush or any Republican , you should maybe look at who has had control of the house and the Senate (if you know what they are and how our government works)for the last 2 years when all the Republicans have been trying to do something and were shut down by the majority(Dems right now). Look it up! You can’t make this stuff up! Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac gave Obama almost 500,000.00 toward his campaign, and they gave McCain 800.00. It is quite obvious who has been lining the pockets of Fanny and Freddie. Get your head out! Do some research!

This time of year we get calls and letters from charities we have supported in the past. This year
I got my usual letter from the American Cancer Society asking that i donate my usual $1000 annual gift.
I wrote on the request, “President Obama will be in charge of the re-distribution of my income next
year and it’s my sincere hope that he will have a fair share of that for the continuation of your organization’s
good work.”
That is what I predict many people with incomes over $250K will do, and the first crisis of Obama’s administration
is that he will realize the power of the people who actually pay the most taxes.

This blog entry stokes the fires of bipartisanship and shows the writer’s bias by its scolding tone - i.e. referring to Palin’s comments as “all sarcasm” and using the subjective comment “of course the end result was all bad”.
Had Obama or Biden made similar comments to Palin’s, we would likely be reading strictly objective descriptions regarding the matter. It’s subtle, but it’s still biased, and it’s clear that the media holds Republicans to a higher standard than they do the Democrats. While I’ve come to expect this biased tone from most of the media, it’s disheartening to see it coming from the CS Monitor. This is one more DISTORTED, conservative style BRAINWASHING. I’ve switched from Republican after hearing the trash spoken on conservative radio. It’s so sad, the number good folks that buy it, hook, line and sinker. Let’s add the fear tactic… “Their going to raise your taxes”, meanwhile we’ve all been taken to the cleaners with 401k and IRA stock market losses. Our cash savings are about to be decimated by future inflation, controlled only by 20% interest rates, and here we are playing “he said that”, games.
Is this presidental material??? Is this what we have to choose from???
I’ll be voting for the wisdom, integrity and energy, I see in Mr Obama.

I wonder if Sarah Palin would consider Jesus a “Socialist” as well?
All through the new testament it says to give to the poor and less fortunate. Here, for instance, Jesus says you will be cast into “everlasting fire” for not taking care of the poor. Seems pretty straight forward to me. You can’t have it both ways.
“For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. (40) And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.(41) Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: (42) For I was an hungred, and ya gave me no meat: i was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:(43) I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.” -Matthew 25 34-41

I’m a registered republican, and I have to say that I don’t want to vote for either of these candidates. I’m frustrated that I don’t see somebody that I *want* to vote for; rather I’m left with choosing the lesser of two evils. And that’s a pretty pathetic situation to be in. Having said that, I simply cannot get past the fact that Obama listened to the hate-filled lunacy spewed out by “reverend” Wright–not just one time, or even for a month–but for *twenty years*.
Certainly not every one of those sermons was as vitriolic and full of hatred as those we saw and heard spewing out of his mouth in the news and YouTube clips, but the fact remains that Obama chose to attend this church and listen to this anti-America (”…blacks should not sing ‘God Bless America’ but ‘God damn America.’”) garbage for twenty years. Does it mean Obama is a white-hating racist? Beats me. But I do know that I am not a racist, and a man who attended and supported that church for twenty years, and agreed with Wright’s teachings absolutely does not share my values, and is not fit to represent me as president.
I don’t really want to vote for McCain, but I find that I really have no choice.

Most of the world’s countries prefer Obama as president and not McCain. If its so obvious to the rest of the world, why not us?

I heard someone on NPR about a month ago say basically the same thing. His opinion was that the “crisis” would probably come from the Russians. He felt that Putin was wiley enough to try something to test an inexperienced President like Obama. This is very similar to the scenario of the Cuban missle crisis and JFK.
One other comment is that so many people are wound up about what McCain says he will do or what Obama says he will do. When is the last time a Presidential candidate actually did something he said he would do? These campaign promises are just for the gullible. The two parties we have in power are interested in furthering their own agendas and propagating the party. If they do something that helps the common folks, it is just by coincidence and was not intended to happen. Statistics would suggest that if you make enough laws, eventually one of them has to do some good for the country.
So, choose your poison. By the end of 4 years, you won’t be able to tell the difference by how much better off you are than you were 4 years earlier regardless of whether it is Obama or McCain.
157. gdgca | 10.21.08
Sarah Palin is evil?
That is the best and most intelligent response you can come up with?
Which of the scenarios did you disagree with and why?
Certainly scenario #5 should be the scariest for the Obama campaign but the first 4 are much more frightening for this country!
158. Barffonit | 10.21.08
Oh,I can see it all now. There’s pretty Sarah, goin’ down to the Wasilla Wal-Mart. Lookin’ over the weddin’ ingredients, you betcha. A nice shiny shotgun with a Moose carved on it, you betcha. And some Polar bear-tooth necklaces for the other five members of the elite six, you betcha. Can’t forget a few six-packs, can we? No betcha! (Sarah’s going to be behind the loving couple with her shiny new Moose-carved shotgun just a-winkin away at that handsome fish-boat captain about to perform the ceremony, you betcha.)
Sorry you won’t be able to do all this stuff in the White House, Sarah. Real sorry, you betcha.

Stupid stupid Americans; that’s what the world thinks of us. We will continue to be the most enslaved population on Earth, whilst simultaneously proclaiming to be ‘free’. We will continue to put morons in power because we’re all morons. And we’ll stand by like jackasses while the government takes all our money and pours it into the very same economic engine that stole all our money away the first time, instead of directly helping the victims.
Until the day we elect a leader whose sole policy is “I will take money from the rich to improve the lives of the poor”, we will continue to be slaves to the machine, lost in a sea of media-driven consciousness.
Enjoy your continued indentured servitude
163. Darcy | 10.21.08
I’m not surprised Palin once again failed to “get” the comment. Of course there will be something that tests the new president. Perhaps Palin doesn’t know that 911 occurred when GW’s administration was in its infancy. Maybe she thinks if she were in the White House (heaven forbid) that all things big and bad would wait until she was trained in.
164. From Alaska | 10.21.08
I have two points.
One is: If you vote for McCain because you think terrorists would attack us when Obama is President, then you are allowing your fear of terrorists to determine your vote and the terrorists have already beaten you.
The second is: If I were a terrorist I would welcome another 4 to 8 years of Bush-like foriegn policy because it has already proven to be a failure and not too hard to hide from (and if I were a muslim extremist terrorist, I would welcome another 4 to 8 years of Bush-like economic policy because it has already destroyed more American capitalism — indeed world capitalism — than 9/11 could ever dream of).
165. Ellington Carson | 10.21.08
Vote however you wish, but please be prepared for a devastating strike against our Nation within 6 months…8 months at the outside…if Obama is elected, the consequences of which along with his relative non-response will damage us irreparably in all important parameters. The empathy I feel for ALL of us Americans is profound, yet there is nothing I can do to change the course of inevitability.
166. Chuck | 10.21.08
Palin and McCain are setting a bad example for all Christians, such as allowing desperate and misleading ideas (like Obama is dangerous and Obama is against our way of life) to be spread throughout christian America. There are so many trusting and well meaning Christians out there who are being victimized simply for trusting these supposedly good christian leaders. the last thing America needs is for the christian science monitor to help fuel the heresy. We must see the true evil here today, and the true evil is growing from ignorance and desperation.
Obamas rise as a leader is needed and will be an awakening. Change that makes us better is often the most difficult and frightening. Instead of forcing division and hatred we christian conservatives should be humbled and learn to demand true wisdom from our leaders. we would not be tested by such a powerful liberal shift in America if we had not supported such selfish evil men as our representatives to the rest of America for the last 10 years.
167. James Briggs | 10.21.08
What hypocrisy. If the Republican are correct about a crisis proving that the president is incompetent then Bush is incompetent. Well we all know he is anyway but it’s good to know that the Republicans are admitting it.
168. Al | 10.21.08
Not only is this new direction immature, it is insulting to the American people. Any intelligent American will see that Palin is just twisting Biden’s words to suit her agenda. If I were American I wouldn’t stand for this condescension and I would demand more of my candidates. Get back to talking about real issues, about the economy, the climate, the war and the American people.
169. Dianne | 10.21.08
No matter who gets elected, they are going to face a world crisis. Who indeed is better to handle it? I have the utmost respect for older people, but I do not think a man his age should be running our country,it’s not that he isn’t a good man and a man who could run our country, he’s just too old. How many companies in this country have been allowed to get rid of older employees simply because they’ve gotten to old? And sadly that age is about 50, not 72! And if God forbid something happen to him, we’d have a woman not qualified to take his place. Maybe someday, but not today.

“Obama will succeed, we trust him, he has outlined his plan, crisp and clear.
He will be great, even the greates president of the US and the world.” Said by Conrad….
Well that is the problem… We trust him, people worship him, and love him. He is coming more and more like the anitchrist. People like you do not know what you are getting into. If you disagree just read the book of Revolations. As stated in the book: A man will come in the time of great crisis (economic crisis maybe?), he will be a great public speaker and handsome (of coarse not John McCain), and will be worshiped by some (Obama supports call him the Messiah.
Times are changing. I am not saying that he is the antichrist but what if he is? You will not know untill he is elected (for the end of the world is coming). But I could be wrong but I know something…That obama is going to make a big mess of things in his 4 year term!!

I’m glad the press is covering what “she” says, because some of her likely supporters think it’s your fault she’s not being quoted when she makes these “brilliant” off-point quotes completely without substance.
Every single thing she says proves that she’s a useless piece of drek. I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be for you to listen to her and try to put what she says into some context so that you can “report” it. You’re earning every single penny you get. God bless you, if only because it must be terribly humiliating to have to transcribe such drivel.

How lucky we are to live in a country that allows us the freedom to debate the issues and choose our own leaders! We are all entitled to our own opinions and we can even agree to disagree. When we begin to lose that freedom, when our leaders tell us what to think and we believe every word they or their outlets say, we come dangerously close to repeating the mistakes of the past. Extreme views - on either side - are a slippery slope to oppression, persecution, and fascism. Remember the lessons of 9/11: at the heart of the matter, we are ALL on the same side.
176. jba | 10.21.08
McCain possibly would have had my vote if he hadnt of chosen Palin for his VP. I dont trust the woman and the thought of her taking over if something should happen to McCain worries me…and this isnt because she’s a woman (I am a woman, myself), its just the judgement calls she makes are really poor choices. Who would take us seriously with her in the hot seat?!
177. Michael Christmas | 10.21.08
It is scary that our electorate has become so ignorant and ambiviant to the political process that they accept bilge from a bias media and anonymous bloggers; assuming that a feel-good vote doesn’t have worldwide ramifictions. To think there are anywhere near 50% of voters who would consider someone for president that espouses Marxism and anti-American beliefs is shameful and frightening. My solace is that on November 5th, when we wake up, I am quite sure that the Lord God Almighty will not be saying, “boy, I didn’t see that one coming.” I pray for revival and healing of our nation. Glory be to God.

I can’t believe all the people who are saying that Obama has clear plans, that he will help America, that his ideas are not socialist, and that the people he has proven to be associated with are not “shady” to say the least. This is unbelievable….is this really happening? Are we really becoming that stupid of a nation to vote for someone with NO experience, to follow a pied piper blindly because he speaks well, and can talk and confuse the mass so as to make them think he has answered a question, when he has only muttered the same rhetoric over and over?? Thank God, I’m not going to sell my soul to the media and favor government hand outs…You want something, go work for it. Get your damn hand out of my pocket!!!!!

Even B. Hussain Obama has >300 advisers surrounding him, he still fails miserably if America again faces a terorrist attack. He may just sit down to negotiate with terorrists’s demands without preconditions and “calmly” to retreat and hide. He just can not rely on big mouth “Joe”s advices, who proven him wrong again and again every big time when he opens his mouth. God blesses America! I worry about America’s future!
185. ramon | 10.21.08
During the first 6 years of Bush’s presidency, the Republicans controlled both house and senate. The Democrats have only been in the control of both houses for two years now AND to top it all off have a Republican President who vetoed ALOT of the major issues, like withdrawing from Iraq with a timetable. The Republicans had Congress AND the white house for 6 years and this is the situation they’ve placed us.
Obama is smart and intelligent and like Powell said, his campaign is inclusive versus McCain’s campaign which has been divisive. We are in a state of financial crisis and in two wars of course whichever wins, both will be tested. I think the world respects Obama and as we saw in his trips overseas and meeting with world leaders is well liked.
If you think that Palin is intelligent. Your fooling yourself.

187. RadianChalant | 10.21.08
You are telling me that McCain and Palin can interpret what Joe Biden said, but McCain can not run his campaign and Palin still has no idea what the Vice President of the U.S. does? McCain was pointing fingers at Obama about ACORN and McCain had his own registration misdealing going on involving people in his own campaign and on two fronts. Palin who talks about transparency and cooperation covers up her problems in Alaska, abusing power and ethics problems. The biggest terrorist facing the U.S. is McCain/Palin. Terrorists spread discourse, fear and division. Is that not what McCain and Palin are doing over and over again? Joe Biden said nothing wrong about Obama getting into the Presidential office; McCaina and Palin are just twisting words to satisfy their negative messages. People are on to McCain and Palin. Did not George W. Bush cheat to get into office versus Al Gore in 2004? The McCain ways are just like those of Bush. We need Barack Obama to win and that is that. Barack for President.

191. artemisia | 10.21.08
Sarah Palin should stop attacking Obama/Biden ticket and worry about her own unethical conduct in charging her kids’ (non campaign related) travel expenses to the hard working tax payers of Alaska. Her team’s response that they charged less family related expenses to the tax payers than the last governor of Alaska does not justify her conduct. McCain/Palin ticket represents the failed Republican policies and conduct of the last eight years.
192. LatinLady | 10.21.08
I think it is a sad state of affairs when the candidates for the most important jobs in the United States act like children picking at each other instead of grown responsible adults focusing on the issues facing this nation today. How are we, the voters, supposed to make a decision on who would be the best person for these important positions. What kind of example does this send to our future voters. I am afraid for the future of our grandchildren. With the choices we will have on our ballots, I think I will be writing my choice in. Anything is better than Obama or McCain. May God bless us because we are going to need it.
193. Mike | 10.21.08
“I think that it’s a shame that john MCcain would pick someone without a college education! What kind of message does this send to the young people
of America?”
Just to set the record straight. Sarah Palin graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. Please do your research before judging others based on their accent.
194. TJ | 10.21.08
All new presidents are “tested” in this manner, at least since 1960. You can bet McCain will also be tested since his hot headed temper and impulsiveness, and anger, and propensity to war and attack, is so well known. Rather than “test” him, they will provoke him and get the outcome they want. I feel less safe in that scenario than in the former where I would have a man with a different temperament and a man with an intellect and an army of sane and smart advisors. No, that campaign and those two do not know how to read or comprehend; they are full of themselves and are motivated for personal ambition and have no clue what reality is and how to fix it; they certainly haven’t shared it with us. They are pathological liars and can distort facts that stare us all in the face.
I certainly hope Miss Sarah, should she somehow get this election, does not expect the taxpayors to subsidize her taking her kids and husband along on all her travels as she did in Alaska. I am in no mood to pay for per diems, hotel bills, food, entertainment, and airfare for all those kids and Todd the Shadow Governor. Bay Buchanan said when you hire a young mother, expect her to take her kids with her. No, not so. We don’t take our kids to work with us. She should stay home with them or make other arrangements.
What a sad joke all of this is! A mockery of the democratic process.

“But I guess the looming crisis that most worries the Obama campaign right now is Joe Biden’s next speaking engagement,” she said.

Do i think comments made during this campaign are justified? No, to much bickering. Do i think plans have been laid out for the people to make a sound and qualified decision? No, put it out there and at the very least the people of these United States of America can make an informed decision. Its our country, we the people need to make sure we are heard and not led into something we dont want. America is made up of a variety of people, we clash, we debate, and quite often we ignore what is going on. This is our country, and we decide where to take its future.
197. Josh | 10.21.08
Conrad, how do you believe republicans created this mess? what we are going through is a symptom of liberal beliefs. Was it republicans who opposed increase domestic oil drilling? no, it was democrats who made us so dependent on foreign oil that we have to actually care about the stability of the middle east. Is it republicans who wanted to do so much to give mortgage loans to low income (aka people who can’t afford to won a house) people? No again that was the democrats? what senate committee provided oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? find out who’s in charge there. and find out which party pressed for tighter regulation and which party said there was nothing wrong. Look up the last 2 CEO’s of Fannie and how much money that walked away with and find out which campaigns they donate to. this is a huge liberal mess and your ignorance of it only proves my theory about the democrats appealing to the stupid.

There is already a crisis ready for the next president as Bush is unwilling/unable to shut down gitmo. So Biden is right. The source of the crisis is home grown. Please check your facts: Palin does have a college degree- unlike most of you who claimed she didn’t. Also, you may want to brush up on what the definition of socialism is and what a violation of our rights are. Taking money from people who have earned it honestly to give to people who don’t have as much is just as stupid as it is wrong. It’s a slippery slope I really don’t think Americans want to go down. Think about it- if you penalize people for making lots of money by taking it away and giving it to others - what incentive does anyone have to make money? We’ll all just sit around and wait for our handout check - but the jokes on us cause now there’s no one making money anymore so where does it come from? Think about it!

I guarantee that in two years every one of you who vote for Obama will be wishing you didn’t when you have no insurance, have no job, have no money, wait in long lines for Gas and food. You say John McCain is waging a negative campaign?? Why is it that you, along with the entire media have chosen to not even question who this man is; who he associates with; what he believes in; and what he really has planned for this country. It just amazes me. I know that McCain-Palin is not the best answer to the problems, but just logically thinking- it is obvious- if you are an american who believes in Saftey, security, prosperity, low taxes, smaller but more efficient government, the stopping of wasteful spending, and the first 4 amendments- You could never vote for Obama-Biden!!! “Obama is a confirmed socialist. He will lead this nation towards eventually tyranny and communism. Change we can believe in? No thanks.”
confirmed socialist?? when was this confirmed? lead towards tyranny and communism? lots of facts in that statement, for sure. Here’s another one:
“Right on the mark. How obvious, the lack of readiness in the Obama camp. With the Bidenisms which abound, he could write his next book. A joke book.
C’mon Joe, quit politics, it isn’t YOU.
You were meant to be a comedian.”
Wow, that’s chalk full of…facts and legitimate arguments?
“Hey, if Obama has this wonderful group of advisors, how do you think they will like every 3:00 am phone call - you know, just to be sure the prez makes the right decision????? We have nothing to worry about; sleep well all. teehee”
Another fact filled argument… except the part where it’s 100% speculation.

Wow the McCain Palin ticket have truly turned into simple hecklers? Well I’m glad they have so much to share, this independent is voting Obama. McCain has proved to me over the last two weeks that the only thing he has to offer is commentary on Obama… Thats not a leader, thats a hater.
212. Brooks | 10.21.08
I hear people talk about Obama and his clear/smooth speeches and spin that as a negative quality. I think someone that speaks clearer may think clearer too. And he would be able to express his concerns to other world leaders, to reach understandings with less hassle.
As for his foreign policy experience and the possible test he would face… I believe he would handle the situation wisely and carefully, but at the same time (this is why you have a VP and advisers) he will have people with experience at his side.
McCain & Palin are very negative towards Obama & Biden and that doesn’t sit well with me. They are running a campaign that suggest Obama is a terrorist, and Biden is an idiot (neither person could have gotten to where they are if either was true), and if Obama/Biden get elected the country will be in danger. I’m not bothered by the campaign because they’re being mean. I’m bothered by the lack of morals and because that’s how they react to adversity, or the fear of not getting what they want. They seem to get what they want by striking fear into hearts & minds of everyone, and then say that they have the solution. It’s the same as Bush.

And you gotta love this very informed argument for McCain, by a McCain supporter:
“If You have a Brain—You will vote for McCain !!!!!!!!!”
Yeah.. those comments aren’t snide, or trivial at all. So much more “substance” to them..

Lets ask the true question about socialism - what do we call it when the people running wall street concoct all these scams and schemes that are destroying our nation financially? Their house of cards has come tumbling down and you can bet that $700 Billion is a down payment.
Strange that socialism isn’t socialism when the government has to burden our children for decades to pay off for the schemes and scams of wall street, while so many ordinary citizens - millions possibly - are losing their home. All thanks to the corrupt people who control the Republican party, and for whom Bush Jr was just a puppet. The people who worship at the altar of the God of Endless Greed.
And for those who say the dems controlled congress the last two years, please remember that without a 60 vote super-majority in the Senate, the republicans could, and often did fillibuster much of what the Democrats tried to do to right our ship of state. And then you need a 2/3 super-majority to over-ride Bush’s vetos, which the democrats didn’t have.
215. Guardians | 10.21.08
Look at these comments and tell me this country isn’t divided.
Then look at the past 100+ years with one party or another being in control of the government.
Look at all our problems, which naturally fall under the responsibility of those who’ve been in power all these years.
And how people keep thinking that if they vote for just the other guy, suddenly things they’ll get better.
Now tell me it’s not time to vote third party.

What I fear most is that Obama will win, our pocketbooks will lose (thru taxes) and our constitution wil suffer socialist setbacks.
I make less than 25,000 per year and I don’t think raising taxes on 250k plus is a good thing. Shouldn’t all of us pay the same tax rate? Why do some pay nothing, lower income folks like myself, and others pay 38 percent? Shouldn’t we all pay the same PERCENTAGE? Scaled tax rates are unfair.
God Bless America. Lord, please save us from socialists. Your will be done.

What group of morons would possibly choose Palin as a VP candidate? Who is this supposed to appeal to - the very narrow slice of sheeple on the ignorant right who have somehow been convinced that this idiot is ready to lead the free world? Now they are actually spinning her as the future of the republican party. Are they trying to sink their party?
218. Leroy | 10.21.08
Wow are these guys desperate. None of the listed items were crises, so maybe a dictionary is required.
Weird to see a campaign just grabbing at straws like they have nothing to offer. Talk substance, drop the willful and obvious misconstrual, you don’t look good in it.

Regardless of how the comment was interpreted, does it really matter what the republicans are saying . The US is in a state of chaos and we were put here by republicans so their augment that without their leadership we will somehow be worse off is a complete farce. The republicans have had 8 years to prove them selfs and they failed miserably. We need new leadership in this country I’m so sick of the barrage of lies we are inundated with from the republicans .
In 8 short years we have gone from surplus left by the democrats to the largest deficit in the history of this country, we have two wars with no end game, we have an unexplained attack our our country 9/11, why was the FBI not involved, why did WTC7 fall like it was imploded, we have a blotted government twice the size of our last democratic government and now we have a socialist program to bail out the same people that got us into this finical mess, not to mention we are still paying the executives their complete salaries and bonuses when they should be in jail.
I don’t understand how new leadership and ideas could put us in a worst spot.
Obama is going to win, get over it and except that America will grow stronger in the coming years.

Go Sarah !!!!! The real question is how can a man, Obama, claiming to be a Christian support Abortion? We live in a nation that says save the trees but kill the babies…. we have lost our way…… 2 Chron 7:14 If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, turn from there wicked ways,

Mr. Biden had some personal tragic things in his life, and it is admirable how he dealt with them. It would be hoped the Obama/Biden team, would (if they win)
have the wisdom to lead this country in a wise and courageous manner, as Mr. Biden did in his personal life.
Obama/Biden platform would/will be based on the same platform Jimmy Carter had. Certainly, it would not be perfect, but it may not be too bad.
222. Esther | 10.21.08
Thank goodness for Colin Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama. An endorsement from Powell is like getting it directly from the horse’s mouth! The Powell endorsement screams just how bad the Bush Administration must really be for Powell, a devoted Democrat, to actually speak out and endorse a Democratic Candidate.
McCain and Palin are RNC jokes. They spew uneducated words that incite the dwindling RNC base. At this point in our country’s history, where working people are losing money, homes, cars and jobs, most voters recognize that McCain and Palin are making poor attempts to take the focus off of themselves in order to distract ‘the little people’.
I’d like to think our country isn’t comprised of morons who adhere to threats and a President who leads via fear rather than respect. In fact, isn’t a leader who rules by fear considered a Dictator?
Vote! Yes We Can!

How do you like those Voting Machines? They switch to McCain when people are voting for Obama right before their eyes, Can you say MAJOR voter fraud? and the republicans want to cry about ACORN. Speaking of ACORN McCain gave their keynote address speech in 2006.

It can’t be more obvious how evil and incompetent Palin and McCain are.
The only thing they know is to do personal attack like rabid dogs.
They knew nothing about the economy, foreign policies, and health care.
Who can afford another crazy four republican years?
Sarah Palin will just use the Federal Reserve as her family bank and travel her whole family around the world using our tax payers’ money!!!
Wake up, people!

Palin has been promoted as a financially responsible person.
How could Palin, as Mayor of Wasilla, construct a sports palace with public funds, and leave Wasilla millions of dollars in debt? How much did Wasilla’s taxes go up to pay for this sports palace?
She is NOT a steady hand; when she wants something she goes after it, regardless of the consequences. After construction of this Wasilla sports palace began, it was discovered that the Town of Wasilla did NOT own all the land that the building would occupy - OOPS, who forgot to check those land records, Sarah? A successful suit by the real landowner had to be instituted in order for the landowner to recover the value of his ‘government confiscated’ land. The government cannot confiscate land without compensating the owner. This was reaffirmed by a supreme court decision on a ‘flood plane’ issue surrounding a church’s (California) desire to rebuild its burned down church on land that the church already owned.
I’m just curious: is confiscating private land, without compensation, an example of ‘Socialism’? (Did I just hear a ‘You betcha’ coming from a northerly direction?)

Palin’s latest wise-guy comments show she doesnt even understand world politics.
She heard Biden say that Obama will be tested on the world stage when he is in office. She thought that meant the boogey-man would try something mean to ‘test’ Obama. Wrong again Governor Palin. No matter who is in office events keep happening. What Biden’s point means in Las Vegas terms is that everyone is always shooting a point. There is no stopping the world. Stuff happens. Obama, Palin which one would you rather have facing reality? At least Obama knows that reality bites. Palin thinks she is tough. She thinks because she can spell Russia, she can stand up to Putin over the Ukraine. I didnt hear her planning the universal draft to back her play. Sorry for all the sports metaphors.
The Bottom line, life comes at you fast, Mrs Palin, and no one gets a break. Economics is tough and getting a D in economics is not good enough, Mrs Palin.
Obama can handle negotiations that McCain wont even try. Talk is tougher than dropping bombs. Iraq has no peace because Bush never negotiated the oil treaty.
McCain cannot win a ‘victory’ in Iraq. The intelligence report Bush is hiding says so. The only victory is a negotiated settlement.
233. Katharine | 10.22.08

I certainly do not want to bash Obama or toot a horn for McCain….but…I’ve been doing research in regards to finding ACTUAL facts to choose for my vote, instead of relying on one sided ads or basic political mudslinging. I found a useful site: votesmart.org
The one fact I am seriously concerned with is the voting record of Obama. His record of voting is NV (No Vote) is overwhelming in the last few years. What leader casts no vote on issues he was “hired” by the people to make decisions on, for the people. There’s no such thing as a leader who can’t make a choice, especially when it’s their JOB.
236. Tamasi | 10.22.08
If every new President is tested, clearly Obama/Biden is much more suited intellectually and temperamentally for a crisis than their opponents.
What is the most frightening is if, God forbid, McCain were President and something happens to him, how would President Palin handle such a test?
…very scary!

Since when is Sarah Palin an expert on foreign policy, especially when it comes to the Middle East. And if I recall correctly, didn’t she imply that she would support attacking Pakistan in her interview with Charlie.
238. CyberFerret52 | 10.22.08
Sarah Palin does have a college education and more importantly she has more executive experience than Barak Obama. She is so popular that the Obama camp misses no opportunity to smear her and distort her record. Sarah, unlike Obama produced some real legislation and fought the good old boys in her own party and won. The smear campaign isn’t working. The more people get to know Sarah the better they like her. Efforts to portray her as dumb are lame and although she holds core beliefs that many don’t agree with, she doesn’t seem to have the need to force those beliefs on others.

RNC spends thousands on dresses, make-up for Sarah Palin & family
By KENNETH R. BAZINET

Dressing up Sarah Palin and her family has cost the RNC upwards of $150,000, according to a report.
WASHINGTON - Lipstick isn’t the only difference between America’s top hockey mom and a pit bull.
Sarah Palin also has a spectacular new wardrobe, and Republican campaign donors picked up the breathtaking tab.
The Republican National Committee spent $150,000 on clothing and accessories for the vice presidential candidate and her family since early September, according to a report by the Politico Web site.

Looks like a lot of nervous Obots here tonight. How many of you really know the facts about Barak Obama? You can’t learn much of it from the msm as they are bought and paid for just like Barak. This man is an inexperienced, corrupt, liar. He will do and say anything to gain the whitehouse. How many times has he changed his mind on policy? How many times has he used other peoples ideas because he has none of his own? How many times has he accused his opponents of what his own campaign is guilty of? He may not have any political experience but, he has a PhD in the game he is running on the american people.

The nomination of and subsequent popularity of such an unqualified, inept, and totally worthless VP candidate like Palin is truly embarrassing for any and all “true” Americans, and goes to show how pathetic our culture has become with it’s fascination of celebrity and looks. Is it irony or stupidity that the “Joe the plumbers” of America relate and believe so much in Palin whilst she fleeces tax payers for state funded family vacations and is spending in excess of $150k on wardrobe and accessories.
245. sheesh | 10.22.08
We’re already in a crisis.
It’s going to be hard to convince the Pakistani and especially Afghani Governments to help us. Their hold over their people is tenuous at best. And the tribal areas of Afghanistan the Wild Wild Middle-East - imagine driving through the rural south and being attacked by bible thumping Baptists that take you hostage and sell you back to your relatives piece by piece. No matter how good our relations are with the leaders of those countries, they have serious issues of their own to contend with and with constituents like that, it’s going to take a LOT of convincing to get them to help us.
On one end we have our support of Israel. On the other, we have our big support and dependence on India - Pakistan’s nemesis.. the whole reason they needed the Islamic Nuke. We kind of looked the other way while they did that because we needed their help getting Russia out of Afghanistan. They are pretty rough. At 6 boys are never supposed to cry again. 1st comes God. 2nd comes revenge. And they can hold on to a grudge for generations.
They are certain God will provide them whatever they need, so they don’t accept help readily from “the Infidels”. The stuff in the 80’s required a special kind of charisma (and a lot of money) to happen. An honest, genuine need to help the Mujahadin blow away the commies that were slaughtering them. But, it’s one thing to ask them to allow you to help them overthrow a secular aggressor like Russia. It’s quite another to ask them to help us today.

We will march on Washington. We will stop by Chicago and pick up Bill Ayers along the way….it won’t be pretty.
Come to think of it, since Palin is making such a big deal out of this, we are now visualizing HER being in the White House and being put to a *test*, crisis-like. Oh. My. God.

GREETINGS -
The conservative agenda never felt as threatened nor did it ever entertain as much self-doubt as it does in this hour of CHANGE. The winds of change that is upon us, sweeping across America, will telegraph to the world “that HOPE has arrived.”
The dawn of a Obama presidency is viewed with much anticipation here in America and throughout the world. While we have become witnesses to the dialectical American-style party politics, international observers has also viewed the dynamics of a Obama candidacy with subjective interest. America and the world is subsequently engaged in a “issues-debate”, contemplating the impact and future legacy of a President Barrack Obama.
Sen.Barrack Obama was introduced to the national and international stage at the’04 Democratic convention.Immediate public opinion detected presidential aura encasing the persona of “the blessed one”(T.B.O.), inquiring “why T.B.O. wasn’t the one running for the presidency?”
The presidency of T.B.O. has a “great urgency” for a world that is weary from WARS, HUNGER AND INJUSTICE…”The world is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof”… - so sang the psalmist.
If the people of America are truly a God-fearing nation, they will undoubtedly acknowledge the truth that God intervenes in the affairs of man. God has heard the cries of slaves(and former slaves), the poor and the downtrodden, and has responded in kind. That the son of slaves (and former slaves)is predestined - appointed by God and country - to take this nations highest office,is reminder to the oppressor and the oppressed, that the Most-High God…….IS NOT SLEEPING!!!
Jah Bless.

The Treasury Secretary of the United States, Henry Paulson….that Republican guy? Now HE is a confirmed socialist! He just nationalized most of the US banking industry, in case you’ve been out to lunch somewhere and didn’t know that!

253. Chris | 10.22.08
To those of you who are certain Obama will win, don’t be so sure. Yes the polls suggest it, but the last thing we need is for people to not vote because they think it’s already taken care of. The fear of a big loss is going to mobilize the Republican base to turn out in large numbers, so let’s not be so confident that we make the less committed Obama supporters feel like they don’t need to vote. The fight is not over!
254. Pam | 10.22.08
We have an uncanny ability to vote for or against someone for all the wrong reasons. We allow ourselves to be ruled by bias, hatred, selfishness, and single issues that in the Big Picture are really minute. What would the “greatest generation that ever lived” say if they knew we are unable to pull together for the betterment of this country in a time of crisis and that so many of us give into fear? Wasn’t it F.D.R. who said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”? It is time to truly absorb his words.
The McCain/Palin ticket is an obvious mistake for many reasons. They have no real platform, cannot adequately speak to the issues or express the long-term impact of what little they do say — not to mention waffle around or ignore good questions that deserve good answers, have done a great job of spreading fear and hatred, do not listen well as evidenced by the debates, and have made their personal biases the business of government showing their lack of ability to be open-minded and respectful of other points of view. It is what one does that shows who one is. What they have shown is a lack of wisdom and substance. They have shown themselves to be insecure individuals who mask their insecurities through bullying.
In these times, we need calm and thoughtful long-range planning. We need to work together and forget our biases. We need to recognize past mistakes, learn from them, and move forward in a positive manner. We need a strong President who understands when to use that strength and when not to use it. A person who surrounds himself or herself with wise council with divergent points of view. A person who carefully considers all opinions before making a decision fully understanding the impact of the decision made.
Given the choices before me, there is no question in my mind that Barack Obama has demonstrated he can better fullfill our needs. OBAMA HAS MY VOTE. It is time to tackle the Big Picture and forget the personal agendas.

A lot of people are concerned about national security but it would seem to me that the traditional foe ‘Russia’ guarded by the Alaskan National guard is the least of our problems when our southern border leaks like a sieve and we have 1 million illegals in this country and more coming every day.

Of course Obama will be tested. He has no credentials, other than being famous for voting 100% partisanly Democratic — that is, when he does vote. He is a sock-puppet of the Democratic machine. All hype, no substance. But, Wow! Great Hype! America has an American Idle / Survivor mentality that loves hype over substance and is blind to any consequences.

Why is it that everyone thinks their candidate is on the high road? The fact is, sheeple, that both parties actively work to divide us as a nation with pseudo-important partisan issues. They divide us so that we are all easier to manage and are not likely to see eye-to-eye on the important issues. Folks, WAKE UP. Both candidates are vying for the most powerful position on the planet, and they BOTH will lie, cheat, and steal - either directly or via proxies, to win the prize.
Let’s all be honest with each other, can we? The vast majority of us are centrists who want the same things out of our government. I consider myself an Independent because I feel BOTH parties have betrayed us - the majority who are centrists. Maybe it’s time to set aside the anger of who did what when, and my party is not culpable, yours is. Maybe it’s time to say “Hello Democrat, I’m like you.” and “Hello, Republican, I’m like you.” If we can do this, maybe both parties will be forced to respond with candidates who are relevant to the issues we face as a nation of ONE people.
269. H. D. Schmidt | 10.26.08
Did Liverman not say the same thing even about McCain? So lady Palin what do you have to say about your both who also is the one who lived evidently for some years with a mistress before marrying her only a month after he divorced his wife? So that is the man you trust and want America to trust, if he cannot even be true to these sacrad words: “Until death do us part”? I call a guy like that nothing better than an adulterer and a bad example for America’s youth as divorce is rampant, etc., etc., etc.
Yes, Ron Paul will remains my hero, period. Yes, a true American, a loyal husband and father, plus a Christian doctor who believes in the sanctity of human life from conception who seemingly never had to murder an unborn baby to save the mother’s life. So there you have it folks.
Simply put, neither McCain nor Abama have plans nor the capacity to stop America from full speed ahead on a final titanic voyage like, heading for the iceberg it built by itself and for itself. Yes, America has bedeviled itself with Socialism/Communism, multitculturalism and Imperialism.
Yes, I base my commentary on none others than the Founding Fathers. Just a few quotes from some of them. George Washington said this: “Overgrown military establishments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican liberty”. So, what goes now with America’s evermore inhumane and horrendous war machinery circling the globe, and actually creating all the problems of the world, while the American economy melted down with billions wasted at the same time in this crasy Hitler mindset?

We do not publish all comments, and we do not publish comments immediately. The comments feature is a forum to discuss the ideas in our stories. Constructive debate - even pointed disagreement - is welcome, but personal attacks on other commenters are not, and will not be published.
Tip: Do not write a novel. Keep it short. We will not publish lengthy comments. Come up with your own statements. This is not a place to cut and paste an email you received. If we recognize it as such, we won't post it.
Please do not post any comments that are commercial in nature or that violate copyrights.
Finally, we will not publish any comments that we regard as obscene, defamatory, or intended to incite violence.
