More Republicans jump ship - Weld, McClellan support Obama

By Jimmy Orr | 10.24.08

Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld, a Republican, announced this morning his support for the Democratic nominee for President, Barack Obama.

Weld’s endorsement comes a day after former Bush Press Secretary Scott McClellan and the former Governor of Minnesota Arne Carlson, also a Republican, announced their support - separately - of Obama’s candidacy.

In a statement Weld said, “Sen. Obama is a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America’s standing in the world.”

“We need a president who will lead based on our common values and Sen. Obama demonstrates an ability to unite and inspire. Throughout this campaign I’ve watched his steady leadership through trying times and I’m confident he is the best candidate to move our country forward,” he said.

Scott McClellan

As for McClellan, his preference for Obama was made public through a clip CNN distributed promoting a new TV program the network will debut tomorrow.

Appearing on “D.L. Hughley Breaks the News,” McClellan said his vote is all about “change.”

“From the very beginning I have said I am going to support the candidate that has the best chance for changing the way Washington works and getting things done and I will be voting for Barack Obama,” he said to cheers and applause.

McClellan’s decision isn’t that much of a surprise.  His book “What Happened:  Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception” showed McClellan’s distaste with the partisan ways of Washington, DC — not to mention W.

Not quick to embrace

McClellan’s endorsement has received mixed emotions around the blogosphere.

A visitor on the uber-blog site Gawker says thanks but no thanks.

I’m sorry, why would Obama WANT anyone from the Bush Administration, save Colin Powell, to endorse him? Isn’t Scott McClellan reviled by Democrats and Republicans alike.  Oh well. At least McCain has got Bush endorsing him. You really can’t beat that.

Buh-bye

A visitor on the Daily Kos, says the endorsement could be treated like Lindsay Lohan’s attempt to join the team.

Colin Powell is one thing, Scotty Boy…I don’t think we’ll see Obama embracing his endorsement so readily.

It was coming

Over at Talking Points Memo, lfchesterfield says it was inevitable.

“I guess it’s like the broken clock thing: hang around long enough and eventually you’ll agree with McClellan on something,” the blog post reads.

On the right

Those on the right side of blogland aren’t any more embracing. One writer over at HotAir has an interesting idea for a new McCain slogan.

Powell, Ken Adelman, now [McClellan]. McCain should run an ad saying, “If I’m George Bush, why are his cronies all voting for Barack Obama?”

With 11 days to go and Obama’s polls strengthening, the McCain team just might take them up on this idea.

McCain’s repeated phrase, “We’ve got ‘em just where we want ‘em.” reminds me of Mark Twain’s “THE FIGHT” in which he declares, “Firmly I thrust my nose between his teeth and threw him heavily on the ground on top of me.”

I’m sure giving up isn’t what McCain likes to do; however, I do think being realistic would help all our assessment of his clarity of judgment v.s. what comes off as befuddlement.

2. Jeff | 10.24.08

Pretty soon we will all be able to say “Mission Accomplished, he is gone back to Texas”

3. christopher leone | 10.24.08

Still a conservative and still like Bush and his family. McCain and Palin can go the dump heap of disgraceful, dishonest, and fear fanning “what not to do” campaigns. Go Barack Hussein Obama. God Bless you, God Bless Toot, and God Bless America!

4. nc magnolia | 10.24.08

I’m waiting for Ann Coulte, next please!

5. Anne from Colorado | 10.24.08

I suppose that is the editorial we Vince. The media is so biased towards Senator Obama that they have all but counted the votes and are helping him plan the celebration. There are plenty of us conservatives out here that distrust Obama’s clarity of judgment far more than the the judgment of Senator McCain that has been tested time and again. I don’t know of any true conservative that would vote for a man that believes in more taxes in an economic downturn and spreading the wealth of those who have earned it to those that don’t even pay taxes. No candidate has ever been elected by the pollsters. To quote another famous American, it ain’t over til it’s over.

6. laura in colorado | 10.24.08

I am just so sick of the McCain campaign blaming the media for his failed campaign. The problem with the Republicans, since 2000, has been the failure of the administration to admit they made mistakes and use some “good old-fashioned” common sense and intelligence to resolve them.

It is so typically weak of these Republican officials to “get out of the kitchen, when you can’t take the heat.” I completely respect the differing opinions in this country–it’s why America is so great. I think it takes a lot more guts to stand by your convictions than to walk away from your party when the heat gets turned up.

7. Brian from Wisconsin | 10.24.08

although I do not think either candidate is THE answer, I want to be told as much of the truth as possible, and all Ive seen from mcCain campaign is the same ole droll lie after lie that guy blinks alot because he’s a compulsive liar! so it seems we got you where we want you :| mcy campaign on your way home.

8. T Partier from Ohio | 10.24.08

Isn’t it nice to know that some politicians can also be Statesman? Not that some aren’t speaking just to improve their own image, but I do think in some cases, they really do mean it.

That’s a solid Weld, for example…

9. T Partier from Ohio | 10.24.08

Anne,
I don’t suppose McCain getting testy with the media from some of the earliest days of the campaign on (yes - way more than two months ago) did a whole lot to endear him. I don’t suppose cloistering your running mate and keeping the press from asking legitimate questions of her was all too endearing either.

But when it comes to national security and the handling of our armed forces (and yes, I am a vet) it is hard to endorse a man who quotes Washington on the care of veterans while holding one of the very worst records when it comes to voting for the things of which Washington was speaking.

Using the words of one of our greatest patriots to bolster a false image of your record working for later day patriots is frankly, despicable beyond belief.

10. Go Vegetarian! | 10.24.08

The funny thing is a ton of people I know voting for Obama this time around voted for GW in ‘04. Apparently, bad judgment, like bad habits, die hard.

11. Oregon4Obama | 10.24.08

Republicans supporting Obama…..He’s already working accross the isle and gaining support….Obama gives people a chance to be honest and work for the good of America….he is that change we need in washington, and its proving to be that he provides all sides to join with him for a common cause

12. Russell Smith | 10.24.08

I love the clips of Billy O’Neil cursing virulently! He survived Gonzaga High, a Catholic school in the heart of the ghetto. But he is so biased! It just makes me laugh when he accuses people of the same thing. His God is the only God. Good going Gonzaga H.S.

13. John in KC | 10.24.08

Sure the media is “in the bag” for Obama, and if you believe that I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. If there were this ratio of positive/negative coverage in a campaign with somewhat equally matched candidates, Kerry/Bush, then you could say there is bias. Its not bias if you are reporting what is going on. The truth of the matter is that the McCain campaign has so badly mangled things that there isn’t much positive news to be had from there.

14. Kevin | 10.24.08

Anne….you’re right, REAL conservatives won’t be voting for Obama….we will be voting for Bob Barr and the Libertarian ticket.

15. TominGap | 10.24.08

I’m firmly behind McCain & whats-her-name. This country needs to be at war FOREVER!!!! That is best way for the military industrial complex to keep the profits rolling in. So, we have to sacrifice a few thousand of our citizens ever so often, but, hey, what’s more important, money or people?

16. Vince from Iowa | 10.24.08

Anne from Colorado.

Bless your conservative heart, you’ve been blinded by the McCain propaganda. When you decide that OBJECTIVITY is better than being a “true conservative” (you know one of those who likes Bush’s out of control spending policies and war-mongering philosophy) instead of being an “anti-American” liberal, your contribution to wise citizenship will immediately be more valuable.

However, I’m not holding my breath.

17. Barrack 0 Stevie | 10.24.08

Hey Vegetarian! Sorry to here that your vice veggies are stale. Try some beef obama.

18. Tim | 10.24.08

I’m so sick of these people just automatically listening to Senator Obama and saying he is the one for change. He has NEVER brought change to anywhere he was at. I’m from Illinois and he has a bad name here except in the halls of power where they think he will give them more money and power. Unless you call change lining his own pockets, and creating for himself a following. He is a man who is clearly leaning towards Socialism for everyone but himself. This ideology hasn’t worked for Canada (of course no American has the foresight to look across the border and see what that mindset has accomplished there, Canadians just elected a Conservative government for the second time, and made the Liberal Party (which has ruled there for countless years) a laughingstock. Socialism doesn’t work for people who want equal footing to become rich. I’m so sick of people just accepting a policy that flies in the face of everything American, because a Media bias has told them they must believe it is the only way life will work.

19. sobe | 10.24.08

To those complaining that the media aren’t being fair to McCain–
Your issues are being very adequately addressed on FoxNews, the Washington Times, the National Review, et. al.

20. Thomas Erpelding | 10.24.08

Anne:
First…the media is not in love with Obama nor has it really supported him. I believe the media has focused on much of the negativity that he and Palin have fostered. In this…McCain and Palin are getting what they deserved.

A conservative Republican believes in smaller government and less taxes…for all. They believe in family values. They believe in a strong defense for our country. John McCain has been in Washington for over 20 years…he has had his chance to work on “less government” and come up lacking”. His own values…cheating on his first wife with his current wife Cindy, selecting a VP whose daughter has a teen pregnancy would both have been disqualifiers for a Republican candidate as short as eight years ago. His role in the Keating affair and deregulation which have caused our current financial issues. Even for vets…T Partier is right…he has done less for vets than most other members of Congress.

John McCain and Sarah Palin are neither true Republicans nor conservatives. Voting the “party ticket” when the candidates are so clearly problematic is ridiculous.

BTW…if you listened to the debates Anne, Obama said he would cut the budget to equal the dollar amounts for new spending. That is not raising taxes or spending more. Eight years of Bush took us to the largest deficit ever. You have to simply acknowledge that.

21. brianp | 10.24.08

“I am concerned for the security of our great Nation; not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within.”
Gen. Douglas MacArthur

22. dullard | 10.24.08

Of course there can be bias in any reporting. This tends to be much more true of the tv based “news magazines” than the actual new broadcasts. But generally if you start seeing information that contradicts your world view, you have two choices. Adjust your world view, a bit of introspection, maybe an “I guess I was wrong” moment. Or, disregard the information as wrong, and explain the error as bias. Usually followed by seeking out information sources that will present only information that validates your beliefs. (talk radio for example).

23. Bob Devine | 10.24.08

Some how we all have to come togather after November 4, 2008 and help who ever wins because they will be hated by the dems or repub. and they will need the support from the nation as a whole. I say we all pray for the winner who ever they may be!!!

24. Ali E | 10.24.08

Weld has always been a good man. We need more Welds in this world, not cronies who follow their party over a cliff. I have a lot of respect for conservatives who know what’s good for their country and do it. We can’t afford to have McCain (or god forbid Palin) be our president, no matter what party we belong to…

25. Thomas Erpelding | 10.24.08

Tim…so could you define socialist please because your statements don’t warrant it. The government providing a buyout to Wall Street is socialist…but that came from a Republican president and cabinet.

Are you talking about healthcare? Because a single payer system would be socialist but that is not what Obama is advocating. He is advocating the ability for all Americans to receive health care. If they already have it and like it…fine. There would be the ability for the uninsured to receive healthcare from the same pool as government workers. Socialism? Not quite.

Also, comparisons to Canada’s parties…the conservatives and liberals are really in name only. One can’t make that comparative leap in all honesty.

So what does America really mean to you? People stepping on others? CEO’s, bankers and industrialists stealing our money and shipping our jobs overseas? Or do you mean American as in “ONE nation under God, indivisable”? Because that would mean working together for the good of all. Gosh…saying it like that means Jesus Christ must have been a Socialist.

26. Sharon | 10.24.08

“There are plenty of us conservatives out here….” Guess what? The TIDE HAS TURNED. You conservatives had the presidency, the Supreme Court, both the House AND the Senate in your pockets, and we have SEEN what you did with it. We don’t care about you conservatives anymore. Shoo. Now it’s YOU who are either against us or with us. How does it feel?

27. tourist | 10.24.08

It truly is good to know that not everyone walks thoughtlessly lockstep. It bodes well for an Obama administration.

28. dullard | 10.24.08

Tim 19 -

Just fyi… you parents income bracket is a more accurate predictor of your income bracket in the US than it is in Canada. Don’t be too cocky in your assessment of Canada’s socialism, and how “only in America” does everyone have an equal footing to become rich.

29. Anne from Colorado | 10.24.08

Vince, Why is it that you liberals all feel like we are stupid and/or uninformed. I probably know more about the issues than you can imagine since I have been in real estate for over 25 years and my eyes are wide open. As McCain said in the last debate, George Bush, who I am not particularly fond of is not running.

I have also never heard McCain or Palin call Obama anti-American nor do I believe it. Liberal he is and I believe his economic theory of more taxes and government run industry are the road to further economic difficulties and not likely to help the middle class in any way. What good does that tax credit do you if your employer cannot afford to stay in business. We can all get along and act nice to each other on the unemployment line but by then nobody will have enough money to pay the taxes to support the rest of us.

30. Vince from Iowa | 10.24.08

For those of you who voted for George W. Bush (and, who now are supporting Bush’s protege–since he voted for Bush policies and philosophies 90% of the time, consider the following and then ask yourself (in the privacy of your objective judgment):

“Black Tuesday,” occurring during Herber Hoover’s presidency, is commonly viewed as the start of the Great Depression.
“9-11,” occurring during George Bush’s presidency, is commonly viewed as the start of our War on Terror.
Incredibly, each event came exactly 235 days into that president’s tenure.
George Bush’s legacy will now extend beyond his flailing War on Terror, to failed policies that have brought our economy to the brink of another Great Depression. The anxiety many Americans feel today has not been felt in our lifetimes. And it’s quite possible that the worst is yet to come.
Times are not yet desperate enough to call for another “New Deal” with the American people. But don’t be surprised if, a few days into the next presidency, all of the campaign promises and consultant recommendations fly out the window. In January 2009, it might be time for our new president to act a little less like Hoover and Bush–for far too long unable or unwilling to tackle America’s challenges–and a little more like FDR.

31. Pamela | 10.24.08

Shame on any Republican that votes Democrat! You can have Mccellan, he sold out to write a book, he is useless.

32. McFernis | 10.24.08

I just love the claims of Socialism being Anti-American. They are usually from the people that haven’t read the Constitution, support social security, public education, emergency medical services, police forces, fire departments, the United States Military, and the like.

All these programs are Socialist in nature. Socialism is nothing more than an economic system where the industries responsible for the infrastructure of the nature are Government owned instead of Privately owned. But we don’t have anything like that in the United States, right?

The Constitution gives Congress the Right to Regulate Interstate Commerce. Capitalism, the great high and mighty ordeal many claim the U.S. to be, does not support ANY GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT in the Economy. How can the United States be a Capitalist economy when it is written into the Constitution for the Government to interfere?

Of course there is the Preamble to the Constitution where it outlines “…promote the general welfare…” Promoting the General Welfare… The Government helping the people. A government helping its people, improving their living conditions, making everyone better off - that is not Capitalist.

The Government just spent $900 billion on multiple banking industry bailouts. Nationalizing the Banking System. Again, anti-capitalist.

If you don’t like Socialism, you are in the wrong country. If you don’t like Socialism - and refuse to participate; then be prepared to pay each mile you drive on “public roads,” have cash on hand when the Paramedics arrive at your car accident, or when the firefighters are putting out your house. They need to be paid, and in a Capitalist economy, you pay as you go. Also, enroll your children in Private Education that receives NO FEDERAL, STATE, COUNTY, or CITY funds.

33. Curly | 10.24.08

I can tell by the comments this is a liberal/leftest outlet. Now I question if all of these republicans(?) will want in the barn when McCain wins. If they do I hope they get the backing that they gave. If Obama wins here is a thing or two that will happen. 1)Talk radio will go away. That is conservative talk radio which pays its own way will be out since liberal talk dose not support itsef. When radio is required to GIVE equal time to the liberal talk to have the profitable conservative talk on it will cancel both (unless the government requires it to carry the liberal). Another thing you can expect is socialism. Monies will be taken from those who EARN it and give it these who don’t. This had been tried many times in the past and all of those countries are second or third rate even now. I am not one of the rich and I know why.I may benefit (in the beginning). In the end we all would pay for it. The rich(only the ruling party) and the poor who are going to be poorer. Yes Obama will be THE AGENT OF CHANG is this the change that the US and the world needs?

34. Bill Soo | 10.24.08

As a Canadian, I just want to point out that comment 19 is a bit of an oversimplification. Our conservative party won because they are the only party on the right so their 38% of the vote made them the largest party. The 62% of the vote on the left was split amongst 4 different parties.

In a way, that is what is happening to you guys in the states. The conservative movement is splitting and fighting internally. Barr is a spoiler for the right in the same way that Nader was a spoiler for the left in 2000. In addition, there is no common cause linking conservatives together. You have “economic conservatives” fighting with “social conservatives” for control of the party. So you get divisiveness, infighting, mixed messages and desertions.

Tensions like this exist in liberals as well, as shown in Canada, but in the US, you have a leader in Obama who has united the left like never before AND has welcomed those from the right as well. It’s a far cry from the “us vs them” politics of the McCain campaign.

Finally, I’d like to say something about the media bias. Reports are human so they have opinions. Moreover, they tend to be urban, educated and in other demographics that tend to support Democrats. So it should be no surprise that a bias may exist. But while humans have bias, they also have reason, judgement and ethics and for the most part, the media has tried to avoid letting their bias interfere with their duty.

So good luck with your election. I envy you that you have politicians you can vote for, rather than vote against.

35. DARRIN | 10.24.08

The truth is Obama cant be any worse than Bush!

36. Crunchy Middle | 10.24.08

Nope on this: Powell, Ken Adelman, now [McClellan]. McCain should run an ad saying, “If I’m George Bush, why are his cronies all voting for Barack Obama?”

Follow-up Ad would be: Even some of the people who once backed George Bush can see we don’t need more of the same. Or could it be that they find him erratic and that McCain might be even more dangerous than George Bush?

37. Robert | 10.24.08

Just a thought, Republicans should follow their own party platform and start up more news media outlets and compete in the free market for viewers.

38. kate | 10.24.08

Unfortunately, the Republican party has been PLAGUED with these politicians who are not TRUE Republicans! All they care about is getting elected! If you HONESTLY BELIEVE in the Republican phylosophys there is no way you could possibly vote for Obama! He has the top left voting record out of anyone in the Senate. Even John McCain is a left leaning Republican, which is why so many Republicans didn’t give him their support at the beginning of the campaign. Palin is a TRUE Republican, which is why she really sparked a fire in the base!

39. denis | 10.24.08

Two comments:

Anyone who will take an honest look at things knows that Palin is not prepared to be either vice-president or president.

As far as socialism goes, the military is the largest socialistic project the world has ever seen.

40. theantibush | 10.24.08

That after 8 years of Bush - Cheney a good 42 percent still support McCain is evidence that our dismal educational system is in dire need of reform, and that incompetence is the single greatest threat of all to America.

41. Tom C | 10.24.08

We already have socialism in America: big, rich companies get handouts from the government (socialism).

We poor proles have to fight for every scrap (capitalism).

I’m ready for some of those “socialist” tax dollars to be directed towards the MIDDLE class (instead of the richest of the rich) for a while; how about you?

Obama/Biden ‘08

42. DixieWrecked | 10.24.08

I would love to see more social programs in this country. I grew up traveling the world with my father and lived in diverse places as Greece and Indonesia.

After my stint in the military I traveled through Europe with my wife. After being able to speak to people in Europe I realized how selfish Americans are. They never want to help anyone until they are the ones in need of help. I learned that customer satisfaction of medical care does not equate to quality of service or cost. I realized that older people are considered valued members of society and not money drains on their families. Society as a whole is put ahead of the individual and everyone benefits from it. If your individuality requires you to allow someone to do without, think of that the next time you are in need.

The important thing I realized also tied into what I was taught in the military. I was taught that a platoon is only as strong as its weakest link. A country is only as strong as its weakest links. A great society cares for all its members even the redheaded stepchildren. Quit being selfish America.

43. Joshua 20 Ga. | 10.24.08

even if Obama gets it please don’t play a part in helping him tear our country apart from the inside if you do i believe you will regret it for the rest of your life

I love America and the freedoms she gives all of us And i would gladly give my life for my country

This will be one of the most important decisions you will make don’t get it Wrong America is counting on you

And I’m not jumping ship.

44. NinaK | 10.24.08

Glad to seem some conservative republicans backing Senator Obama. They are the ones that truely realize their leadership has really hurt our country and our citizens in a major way. They truely recognize that we cannot continue in this path and I applaud them!! Sticking to the destructive party simply because you are a republican is silly; bluntly stated, COUNTRY COMES BEFORE PARTY, especially in the chaotic circumstances which we are in today, circumstances enabled and promoted by John McCain—-he voted 90+ percent in lockstep with JWB’s policies!! Senator Obama voted mostly AGAINST George W. Bush’ policies because he knew those policies were WRONG for America!!

45. L.B.E.G. | 10.24.08

I’m waiting for Rick Warren to endorse Obama. Now THAT would be something!

To Pamela, #31 who says, “Shame on any Republican that votes for a Democrat”: funny, shame is the last thing I’m feeling right now. Gratitude is more like it. I’m deeply grateful, as a former registered/voting Republican and current Independent, that I live in a country where we all can think freely, we all can vote freely, and we can each follow our own conscience–and not just a past party affiliation–election by election and issue by issue.

Would I say, “Shame on any Democrat voting for a Republican?” Nope! Good for any American that votes as he/she is privately inclined, regardless of party affiliation. I’ve put my vacationing neighbor’s McCain/Palin sign back up when the wind blew it down even though that’s not where my vote will be. I celebrate America’s ability to stretch herself and make room for all differing political viewpoints to be held and exercised without shame or apology. May that continue unhindered.

46. Deaner | 10.24.08

I’m so glad Americans aren’t buying the republicans’ bogus contention that they represent the American way.
I don’t know of a single mortgage company or healthcare provider that accepts flags or “WE Support The Troops” stickers as payment. So long to this dark neocon period in American culture.

47. Dee | 10.24.08

If the only thing to vote on was their resume’ and experience, this race would be a blow out. Why is it when you add race and age into the equation, it makes it a tough decision. Sara Palin has more experience than Obama. I think a president needs to have served in the U.S. Military to be Commander in Chief. I support McCain 100%.

48. William | 10.25.08

The John McCain of 2000 is gone fellas. That’s the only Republican I would’ve ever voted for.

By the way, if Democrats are socialists, then Republicans are Fascists. Without a doubt.

49. Audrey Simmons | 10.25.08

I love the fact that while the McCain campaign is busy trying to find every lie in the book to use against Obama, Obama is busy trying to figure out the best ways to get the country out of the mess we are in. Notice that whenever you see Obama’s videos he has a complete diversed group of people behind him. This to me signifies unity. Unity is strength. And we need as much strength as we can possibly get to get our country out of this mess so that we do not leave this mess for our kids and their kids to try to get out of. The future generations need to be concentrating on ways to advance stuff like technology, science, health care, not cleaning up after our generation.

50. mary | 10.26.08

How can we fault these republicans for getting off the Titanic and trying to get on anything that looks like it will float?

51. Todd | 10.26.08

Its seriously amazing how uneducated and brainwashed some of you people are. It scares me to know that you are helping choose our leader. May God help us.

52. a Canadian watching you | 10.26.08

Tim - you know nothing about Canada and Canadian politics. We Canadians know far more about you, watching your tv news coverage and reading your papers and journals. Our Conservative party is far more to the left than your Democrats, and we still don’t think it’s leftist enough, garnering only 38% of the popular vote. The remaining vote was split between our 3 other leftist parties because we don’t have a great politician like Barack Obama to unite the parties since Pierre Trudeau in the 70’s and 80’s led the country. The only place we are more conservative than Americans, ironically, is in our banking system which has strict regulations which have prevented the economic disaster your banks and financial institutions have suffered without proper regulatory safeguards.

Our medicare socialized system works - noone in Canada goes bankrupt when they get seriously ill, nor does that happen to people in other civilized countries in the western world. Only in America can a decent hard working person get seriously ill and go bankrupt because of the privatized health care system that is not cost effective because it has to make a profit while treating the sick. This need for profit inflates the cost of treating people, and the average person cannot afford to get sick.

53. Elvis Rivera | 10.27.08

even tho i know neither candidate is the solution i really think mccain is the beeter candidate. He was a pow and im sure he will do everything possible to turn this country around, on the other hand obama seems two faced and is only telling people what they want to hear to get elected thats why he is pro choice and in favor of gay marriage. He dont care about this country he just wants to be the president.

We do not publish all comments, and we do not publish comments immediately. The comments feature is a forum to discuss the ideas in our stories. Constructive debate - even pointed disagreement - is welcome, but personal attacks on other commenters are not, and will not be published.

Tip: Do not write a novel. Keep it short. We will not publish lengthy comments. Come up with your own statements. This is not a place to cut and paste an email you received. If we recognize it as such, we won't post it.

Please do not post any comments that are commercial in nature or that violate copyrights.

Finally, we will not publish any comments that we regard as obscene, defamatory, or intended to incite violence.
