(Jake Turcotte)
Hey - it’s 30 minutes nonstop of Barack Obama tonight!
By Jimmy Orr | 10.29.08
Not getting enough politics? You’re not alone. Who has?
Thankfully tonight at 8 p.m. (EDT) Barack Obama will be on every TV channel there is. And for a full 30 minutes.
Obama’s infomercial
Tonight’s the night Barack Obama goes the way of Richard Simmons, Matthew Lesko, and Miss Cleo. He’s doing an infomercial.
Actually, he won’t be everywhere. It may seem like it. He’s bought up the 8 - 8:30 p.m. time slot on CBS, NBC, FOX, and the Spanish speaking network Univision.
It would be easy to make some lame McCain’s-out-of-money joke like: to counterprogram Obama’s monstrous network TV grab, John McCain will run a 30-second ad on an AM polka radio station in Zanesville, Ohio.
But that would be immature.
No ABC?
Obama’s infomercial is not on ABC because apparently when the original deal was being put together the network didn’t want to move its TV show “Pushing Daisies.” This show is about a piemaker gifted with the mysterious ability to bring dead things back to life.
Perhaps the McCain campaign should appear on this show.
McCain ad
Actually, the Republican nominee has launched a TV ad that, will be seen by no one cause they’re out of money according to the McCain people, will alert voters to what Obama won’t be discussing tonight. It’s kind of the inside scoop. The tell-all. We attached the commercial below.
World Series delay?
And you have to credit the McCain campaign team. Trying to press a hot button, in announcing their new ad they claim that Obama’s infomerical is “delaying the World Series.”
McCain himself jumped on that yesterday stating, “No one will delay the World Series game with an infomercial when I’m president.”
It’s America’s pastime. How could an INFOMERCIAL preempt the World Series? With all the back and forth about anti-American views, preempting the World Series in the minds of some could be borderline.
No delay
Actually, it isn’t getting delayed.
Ben Smith over at Politico cleared that up yesterday. He spoke to the Fox account executive who is now rich set up the deal.
“Our first pitch for the world series is usually around 8:30 anyway – so we didn’t push back the game, it was really just about suspending the pre-game — you know, Joe Buck,” said the account executive, Joe Coppola. “That’s all we did.”
Oh. Preempting Joe Buck. That’s actually an improvement.
If the Rays win tonight, perhaps they can give Obama 30 minutes on the house to preempt him again on Friday. Just sayin’.
McCain ad
Back to the McCain ad: The campaign press release tells us that “Barack Obama will not tell Americans how his proposals to increase spending and increase taxes will only further hurt our economy. With crises at home and abroad, Barack Obama does not have the experience America needs, and we cannot afford inexperienced leadership at this time.”
They say his ad will be run on national broadcast channels.
Obama’s message
What will Obama be talking about tonight anyway?
ABC’s George Stephanopolous spoke to some people who know some people who know other people who say Obama will lead off the show and conclude the program discussing his agenda.
What’s in between?
“However the rest of the time you might see other people, like a Warren Buffett or a Colin Powell, and other people the Obama campaign calls ‘validators’ to give testimony on why Americans should vote for Obama,” writes Stephanopolous.

Why in the world is there a link to a John McCain commercial on Youtube at the end of this article?
3. David H | 10.29.08
I am an independent from OH. I am looking forward to seeing Obama on TV tonight. I need all the info I can get to make up my decision.
4. K El | 10.29.08
Oh great! Just what we need, more Obama with undetailed promises on what he’s going to do with our tax money.
Please God, don’t let the government take control of my money!! ::prays::
All this talk about taxing big businesses is nothing more than a way to get to the middle class. You see it’s a downward spiral effect. Who’s giving you that paycheck? Yeah, that’s what I thought.
5. Jim Bo | 10.29.08
Wow. How obscene. America’s turn to socialism will be finded by a lack of education on the part of it’s people. An infomercial buys the presidency.
Wow.
6. J.S. Jeffreys | 10.29.08
Your remarks are sprinkled with sarcasm.
Not even funny just primitive.
Why is this necessary?
7. Duh | 10.29.08
Will is ample evidence that demoncrats don’t actually read, not even the garbage generated from members of their own party (like this article).
Read the article again, Will … see if you can figure it out.
8. Charles Lopez | 10.29.08
Obama is one of the smartest people to ever run for the office of President.
This country needs someone that is at the top of his game at this time in our history.
We need a leader that respects other people, this something that we have not had the last
8 years.
11. Young Voter of Dartmouth, MA | 10.29.08
John McCain’s counter ad to outline the holes in Obama’s plan only disapoints me further. Being an informed voter that was on the fence in between the two candidates, I have to say that lately, the amount of negative campaigning that McCain and Palin have been doing against Obama has really turned me off towards them.
Here is the smooth, noble candidate with the upper hand (Obama), who even with everybody expecting him to win is not bragging or trying to bring McCain down, and then the sore loser (McCain), who is bitter about being the underdog, so he tries to not only turn voters against Obama, but trying to tarnish his reputation as a whole, which in my opinion is making Senator McCain lose even more votes.
And Sarah Palin, well, I don’t the time to spend my whole day writing about how terrible she has made herself look by the way she has tried to not even tarnish, but thoroughly destroy Obama’s reputation.
12. Dan | 10.29.08
This will be another unchallenged ‘political advertisement’ by The obama and nothing better than an info-mercial. Nice way to buy your votes. This is pathetic.
13. D. Bunk | 10.29.08
Cool, finally a chance for Joe 6 pack to become an educated voter. At the very least we won’t have to listen to “my friends” for 30 minutes.
14. Eric | 10.29.08
Oh no! There is that word again: socialism. Check: Obama is a liberal not a socialist. Nothing he proposes is any more socialist than what we already have and is even less socialist than Sarah Palin in Alaska, who taxes the Big Oil companies and redistributes the wealth to the Alaskan citizens.
I don’t here Alaskans complaining about socialism in that regard.
Check: We already have socialism in the form of Police Departments, Fire Departments, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Public Works such as road and bridge building and maintenance, Corporate Welfare, Welfare, WIC, Food Stamps, Unemployment Benefits…
If you want to give up smooth roads and unemployment benefits that is fine by me. I don’t mind pot holes off road driving.
16. Rich | 10.29.08
To DavidH (Independent from OH). You need more information to make a decision? Really. That just blows me away…
17. Jimmy | 10.29.08
America was bought and sold long ago. And even if Obama becomes president he can’t change that. At least Obama gives people hope. Doctors prescribe placebos all the time and they help patients, all it takes is a little hope and faith. No president can change America, the system is too deep, and too corruptible. We have to fix it, each of us, and in order to do that we need hope and faith. Nobody has faith or hope in McCain anymore, so even those that agree with his policies are fooling themselves if they think his presidency would be more valuable than that of Obama’s.
18. Gracie P. | 10.29.08
Regarding Jim Bo’s comment, I have to say that if I knew that 10 fat-cats had funded 30 minutes of prime time air for ANY presidential candidate, I’d be tempted to agree. But given that the average contribution to the Obama campaign has been around $80, this doesn’t feel the same. But maybe it’s just me. ![]()
19. Lola | 10.29.08
OBAMA! OBAMA! The only reason you people are putting him down is because you KNOW he is going to win. I agree with Charles Lopez….Obama is one of the smartest people to ever run for the office of President. We are FINALLY going to get what we deserve…..a person who will take care of this country!
We’ve already declared victory…check this out…http://www.str33tcouture.com
20. John Doe | 10.29.08
Maybe Obama will FINALLY explain how sending americans a check for $500 will quiet them down so they don’t complain when he takes hundreds of milions from the employers of those those very same people.
Maybe he’ll explain why he counts so strongly on americans not being bright enough to see through this plan, or to be capable of understanding that taxing employers doesn’t dig into a copmanies profits, that companies merely pass the added expense on by paying their workers less, and or increasing their prices - which means again it’s paid for by the general population.
Maybe he will explain that his plan to limit investment in this country by increasing capital gains taxes may sound like a lot of fun, and win you a lot of extra votes from near sighted individuals who think sticking it to the “rich” sounds good - but that it will in fact hurt our economy further, not just bringing wall street down, but the rest of the country as well AS IT ALWAYS HAS.
… ah but who am I kidding - barack will just try to convince us all that we’re making history by voting for him. That somehow, him having dark skin makes him different than those of us with lighter skin, and we should be honored and proud to see him elected because of it. Americans will line up at the polls thinking yeah, racism is dead, let’s prove we are color blind by not electing one of those dirty white guys.
This election marks the death of common sense, death of the constitution, the solidification of political correctness, and the birth of nation of the government instead of a government of the people.
Youv’e got one week america. Turn the television, which has been proven to be pure propaganda OFF. Spend the next week thinking all on your own about what our country really needs. You migh surprise yourself in your ability to reason without being told how.
21. Dwayne | 10.29.08
Propaganda has replaced true debate of the issues. We’ve brought this on ourselves.
22. Chris | 10.29.08
“Oh great! Just what we need, more Obama with undetailed promises on what he’s going to do with our tax money.”
—-95% of you wil be getting your “tax money” back with Obama. If you’re in the 5% whose taxes will be raised, cry me a river. The rest of us are hurting.
24. Marie | 10.29.08
I’ll find something worthwhile to do between 8:00 and 8:30 tonight so I don’t have to watch more of this bull. Suggest you all do the same!
25. Judith | 10.29.08
That presidential candidates even have to ‘advertise’ their positions instead of the media providing that service as a condition of FCC licensure like it is supposed to be is the problem.
That’s right, folks. The media is supposed to be providing this service FREE to all qualified candidates in equal amounts. Given that ‘advertising’ of their positions is the biggest expense for campaigns, the real solution to campaign finance reform is to quit paying millions of dollars to media in order for the public to be better informed of candidates positions and policies.
26. Joe | 10.29.08
Why does Obama need to waste that much money on infomercials, when articles like this (written by an obviously unbiased author) do all of his advertising for him. If Obama wins,it will be because of the media, and not his agenda.
27. Dennis Morton | 10.29.08
Ladies and gentlemen,
I applaud the generally respectfull demeanor comments so far, thank you.
Neverthelees, I think the focus on lack of experience, an the American economy are red herrings.
Experience is not, and never has been, a guarantee of either wisdom or leadership.
And the, “first economic crisis of the global age…” (Gordon Brown)should argue better than all else that our selection of leadership must recognize that it is not ‘us against them’ but that we are all in this together.
28. Jenn | 10.29.08
WOW! Thank GOD I won’t be home tonight but even If I were I would not engage in listening to a bunch of B.S. money has bought Mr. Hussein….
He should put his mouth and actions where his money is cause he has done nothing but WASTE it! He can talk the talk and all you people who love this man better hope he can walk the walk. If he is elected it will be on you not me!!
Maybe all you Hussein lovers can attend the hate church with him too. What a racist he is!
29. Harold | 10.29.08
Let us look at the facts. Who really is Obama? He was in office for two years and then decided to run for president. I am not saying McCain is perfect but at least he has been around the block a little bit. I am not for the “old boys” club but we are in real trouble with an economy that is starting to fall apart.
One day Obama may be ready to run for president, but today is not the day. He needs to really get his hands dirty in Congress and show us what he is really about. It is sad that all you can say about McCain is four more years of Bush. His record shows him going against the party many times and does not always agree with Bush.
I would like to see McCain talk more about the economy and stop the negativity but unfortunately with all of the money Obama has, sometimes it will get negative. Why not spend that money not on a campaign but on helping people who are struggling. I think 600 million could go along way to helping…
30. Pittsburgh | 10.29.08
You people have NO IDEA what socialism is. Stop parroting what the Mccain campaign tells you. They base their platform on fear - really, the Mccain camp. and the entire Republican party. Please, for the sake of this country, get a mind of your own, and get the FACTS before you play into this modern McCarthyism
31. becca | 10.29.08
Obama is not funding socialism. And if you’re not rich (most of us aren’t) voting for him is really voting for your best interests - you’ll pay less and get more. I lived in Denmark many years, life in a social welfare state isn’t so bad — they are the happiest country in the world. There are many kinds of socialism, and not all socialism is communism.
32. richard bionda | 10.29.08
My fear is that some McCain supporters will wish bad things to happen this country in the near furture so that they can say “I told you so”. I hope that I am wrong, and that clearer minds will guide us out of this mess, and that this country once again be respected by the world.
33. Janette | 10.29.08
Stop with the Socialism comments!
I don’t even think the American people know the meaning of Socialism.
Look it up. Google it. Then make a comment!
34. Tom Turner | 10.29.08
Wow! Another attempt to show us how intelligent Obama is. During third debate he turned into stuttering idiot and no one in the media noticed! He can read a script- but that does not make him a president! Does anyone other then me wonder where Obama is getting all this money from? Don’t tell me the people. What people, Saudi, Iran, Syria? For sure not the poor downtrodden Americans who need socialized medicine. Ask Germans how good their nationalized medicine works- need a doctor, wait 5 or 6 weeks and then still have to pay out of pocket for treatment. Do we really want this? I don’t!
35. Ian M. | 10.29.08
The problem is, the conception that you have an ad that “buys votes.” How exactly do you get your message out there in the first place?
Oh yes, advertising.
However, I do feel that if you are a candidate willing to spend the money to have others who may not even watch it says something about the candidates will to win. Why criticize a culture that your a part of? Is 30 minutes of your time too much to make your last decision 1 week before the election? Do you care? Comment 13, 2nd to last paragraph the user stated Welfare=Socialism. Yes, and other users stated that Big Corp. pays the middle class. The balance is none. You are pressured to pick between bad and worse. Bad is lack of experience as a U.S. Senator; worse is over 70 years of age with an inexperienced Governor as a V.P. candidate.
My vote goes to bad- if one of them are going to die via age/assassination, then the V.P. race is almost if not more important than that of the Presidential Race.
36. ED | 10.29.08
Thank you Eric for your posting on ’socialism’.Once again Americam voters are been hoodwinked with lies by McCain and the Republicans who have collapsed the world economy and have made the world a more dangewrous place. How anybody who is informed can vote Republicans back in is beyond belief.
ED
37. Curious | 10.29.08
Vince: Whose socialism would you prefer? Bush’s, McCain’s? Or maybe you prefer the current level of socialism.
David H: Really?! You haven’t made a decision yet? How is that possible this far in? No, I must assume you are using sarcasm. The better way to make your decision would be fact checking websites like politifact.com or factcheck.org
And of course this article is biased. Some of us love Joe Buck.
At what point did this article pretend not to be?
38. Scott | 10.29.08
I am amazed. Amazed at how ignorant people are. People please educate yourself. An infomercial or TV ad won’t do that. Any person who thinks socialism is a better way of life, please let me know and I’ll drive you to the nearest airport (one way ticket) so you can go live in a country that has it.
Oh and one more thing to all the uneducated voters…. “Hitler was a great speaker too!”
40. Dr Weissnix | 10.29.08
Only 30 Minutes, Barack ? We need you for 4 years at least to clean up the Bush mess.
41. melissa | 10.29.08
Really, who has THE answer? With problems facing us today that we’ve never really experienced before in history, I tend to think that the answers/solutions are more complex than what any of the presidential candidates have offered to us or can offer in the future. Democratic, Republican, Blah, Blah.
In other words, no matter who reaches that pulpit, there’s one thing we can count on. It’s going to be a long, long battle out of all the problems we’ve got facing us now. And one of those will most likely be a rise in a little bit of racism, considering the changing landscape in America is going to look more foreign, since Americans will be more broke and other countries will have to start bailing us out…as is already happening and will continue, as we continue to fund our campaigns in the middle east.
42. Anonymous 2 | 10.29.08
Anonymous - I agree with you, the author is obviously in love with Obama (but for what reason, I could not tell you)
Will - If you had actually read the article, instead of drooling over Obama, you would have noticed that the author stated,
“…We attached the commercial below.”
43. Todd Mitchem | 10.29.08
AWESOME! Go Obama! Finally in my life I can travel overseas and say, I am American. No kidding. Now when I travel I say I am Canadian just to be on the safe side. Obama is a great light in the abyss of American Politics.
Bless him and bless America if we elect him. It is time to save this great nation!!!!
44. Joe | 10.29.08
Please, stop the nonsense about socialism unless you are also going to complain about (a) Palin taking the profits of oil companies in the form of taxes and giving/redistributing/spreading it to Alaskans in the form of tax rebate, (b) McCain’s proposal to take your money in the form of taxes and giving/redistributing/spreading it to homeowners who cannot afford their mortgages.
McCain/Palin are in favor of the $700 billion bailout where our taxes are given to corporations.
McCain/Palin do not support a flat tax system, they in fact support a progressive tax system in which the tax rate increases as one’s icome increases. Are they somehow less socialist simply because they want the tax rate to increase but at a slightly slower rate for the lucky few who earn more than $200,000 a year (do you earn that much?)
45. Toby | 10.29.08
When more people have more money, more change happens.
People are ambitious by nature and will try to increase their chances of success no matter what the tax code stipulates. A free market economy based on corporate greed only serves the top tiers and stock holders. The consumer and the workers pay the price for this system that is not working.
Optimally, the free market economy could work flawlessly, however, when a corporation or business of any size does not give back to the system in the form of employee benefits or higher pay for workers, or lower prices for the consumer the populace becomes strapped and angry.
Obama is sending a message to let the people understand that giving to all will eventually help us all. Nobody is going to go from eating steak to digging for scraps in the dumpster because of his tax strategy.
46. Cartavia randolph | 10.29.08
i think obama should be the president because he is very nice and he has talent
47. Jh Atlanta, GA | 10.29.08
I heard Obama is a muslim.
He scares me.
I am going as a kool-aid drinking mindless McCain supporter for Halloween. How’d I do?
48. Antony | 10.29.08
Enough with the socialism statement. McCain’s socialism is no different than Bush’s - for the Rich and trickle down. McCain has, only when it’s too late, mustered up some sort of economic policy (for the rich) and he’s duped regular people into thinking that he’s for the middle class…yes we need a good education policy. All this time McCain’s been riding the Maverick shtick with no plan - just Mr. and Ms. Maverick. I don’t see the benefit of a McCain presidency and he made a irresponsible choice for VP - Not good judgment. McCain/Palin - Unstable/Unable.
I’ll throw in a little silent prayer for the Monitor to heal your lame article. Did McCain pay for that space on the Christian Science Monitor site?
49. Zay | 10.29.08
Finally! I’ve been waiting to hear a candidate talk unfiltered and not try to lay out his entire plan in two minute segments on debates that try to cover every issue and end up covering none. But nevertheless, evern with the Validators this is a very smart move..much better than McCains baseless attack ads.
50. inty2525 | 10.29.08
Its so funny to read comments about Obama, and taxes and socialism… this is a nation of damn 3rd graders… Just look at the damn ******* natives who take up welfare and use social security, medicare, and all the half broken social services this country put together for a better life. That is Socialism, that is Redistribution of Wealth you damn ingrates! And for those who make above $250,000 go vote McCain… how the **** you think he’s going to pay for all his false promises? gimme a damn break… I swear I would rather see McCain win to watch our hopeless country flounder to war and desolation… a country of shacks we will be… God Bless America.
51. Alvin | 10.29.08
Am am eagerly awaiting this TV spot. It will be interesting to see how much of the time is not Obama and rather “testaments” to his character like Powell, Buffett and maybe even a Clinton.
To those who say he is trying to buy the presidency, would you rather he use 30 minutes to display his ideas in a positive light or 30 seconds to tears down his opponents ideas in true Rovian fashion?
53. Jack | 10.29.08
I wonder if Obama will introduce the axis of evil participants in his socialist government tonight;
Harry Reid
Nancy Pelosi
Howard Dean
Or, maybe he will introduce us to Barney Frank’s new vision to reduce our military by 25% and create a cabinet level department in it’s place to deal with Peace and Diplomacy.
54. kitsinni | 10.29.08
I’m glad to see there are so many folks on here that are in the richest 5% of the country. It really does suck that 19/20 people make less money than you and your taxes might go up $600 a year. At least you more money then almost every person you seee walking down ther street everyday, and I doubt that $600 a year will change that.
Time to wake up Repulican party and smell the coffee. America doesn’t want extremist religous right wing nuts running the country anymore. Either move your party back towards the center or prepare for much worse. Actually be about small government, less taxes, fiscal responsibilty and quit being about screwing over gays, immigrants, muslims, hippies and maybe you just might be able to save your party.
55. Obama’d-out | 10.29.08
Wow. Just what I always wanted to watch - 30 non-stop minutes of Obama worship. Oh wait, I already get that from the MSM.
If I could think of a song that describes him best, it would be Carly Simons’ “You’re So Vain.” I’ve never seen a candidate that is as enraptured with himself as Obama. Not that I can blame him, I mean the fawning media and Obama-mania sweeping the country doesn’t exactly foster humility.
56. God help us | 10.29.08
I am a Christian and all I can say is God help us all, If McCain is elected we will forsure see the end of out “freedom”..
David the Pastor, the Pastor from my church has already warned us all that McCain is Evil with all his houses and Cars, Obama will save us from 4 more years of BUSH Evil !!!
57. James J. | 10.29.08
How many real intelligent people do you know named JIM BO? I am surprised that JIM BO can spell socialism much less know what it means? Why is it that every hard core republican that I talk to is only concerned about money and how much they will get. What about our country? Remember? The United States of America. Let the JIM BO’s stick with the George W. politics. They have worked so well.
58. Brenda | 10.29.08
I agree that Obama brings hope and faith to America in a way that we have been missing for awhile. I believe in him and although I am not naive enough to think he can break down the walls of corruption alone I think he will inspire American to do more. I love the bit about Alaska’s socialism with the oil revenues, I never thought of it like that but it is right on!! I am excited but still a little nervous. We must get out to vote in record numbers. Those who cling to fear and anti government sentiments must recognize those things have hurt us as a nation.
60. Derrick | 10.29.08
With Dem Obama, Dem Congress and Dem Supreme Court we are all going to see the Carter Effect again. It it like a bird with its left wing overly strong and its right wing with damaged feathers. We the American people will be in the center for a horrible spinning crash. This happened during the Great Depression and during the Carter years. Vote stupid this year and you will vote to shore up the right wing in 4 years to pull us out. History repeats itself. I pray for the people of Isreal. Amen.
61. dinzdale | 10.29.08
As much as I like Obama and support his policies, I do feel that both candidates should get equal airtime. Money should play no part in an election. The people should get full information on ALL candidates (not just the two rammed down our throats by the “coke” and “pepsi” parties.) Of course, this is grotesquely idealistic and far far from the reality of our times… ($$$)
65. Eugene | 10.29.08
How many of you out there really know what socialism is. Go look up the word. You are so right Eric we already have socialism. The value added tax could be called socialism. Ronald Reagan was the one who brought in the value add tax. Go back to FDR and look at what he did. Then look at what Bush did a few weeks ago. You guys cry about you don’t have anything, but still want a person who is going to give the CEO’s and Wall Street the big bucks and leave you with nothing. Eight years is enough, it is time to change.
66. Dem in MA | 10.29.08
I was going to write up a flame retort to the earlier stuff in the thread, but Jimmy’s post made me change my mind. This election has gotten us too polarized. It’s making us too divided. Playing to the politics of division and “us v. them” isn’t what made this nation great and it’s not what will make us great again.
67. Brent | 10.29.08
It’s actually funny to see people bash Obama about socialism. In the last 8 years we’ve grown government, doubled the deficit, and unless the fiscal crisis and all of the recent takeover news is a mirage, it looks like we’ve socialized the banking industry. Perhaps one of the more compassionate among you could explain that conservative fiscal policy to me? And spare me the “last two years have been under Democratic control” bit, I didn’t just walk out of a cave.
That Obama has so many supporters and financial backers to enable him to do such a thing should give one pause. This isn’t your father’s get-out-the-vote movement, there are millions who rallied to the cause; folks with ground support like this it’s been a whole new ballgame.
68. Ani in Texas | 10.29.08
The one thing I’m hoping an Obama presidency can heal is the tired old Republican base need to be filled with hate, venom and anger. We’ve endured it for two full decades now, and it’s time to bring those fear-filled angry insecure people back into the fold, to show them that yes, even they are needed and welcome to help this country and the world through the difficult changes of letting go of an industrial age and coming fully clothed into a more progressive age of technology, cooperation and inclusiveness rather than the ever-smaller circle they keep drawing of exclusion.
The Republican message of ‘being angry and having guns’ is like a 3-yr-old’s rant because he can’t have all the toys in the room, or a high-school football hero or cheerleader reliving their glory days over a lifetime instead of moving on.
The root cause seems to be that they won’t let go of the past, that they reject change in any form. Unfortunately for them, life is about daily change. If we don’t continue to grow, learn and change, we die, and the current ‘crisis’ is only the world shedding it’s latest skin of massive over-consumerism and exclusion, to realize we’re all in this together, and together as a human race, we will either make it or…not.
We’re looking forward to hearing Senator Obama, and are proud to be a part of the 100 million voters who have supported his team with small and regular donations.

I happen to live in a country you would likely call “socialist”. Guess what, we have quick and efficent health care, students can afford overprized iPhones and MacBooks, our power-grids don´t fail, oh, and we don´t watch flood victims drown on TV in our own country while eating tacos on the couch. I’m glad to see the McCain ad on this site. It shows that he has absolutely nothing to say for his own position. His only strategy is to lie about Obama’s strategy. One of Obama’s chief advisers and supporters is Warren Buffet — who is now the richest man in the world. Buffet saw the economic disaster coming, he tried to warn everybody, and he surpassed Bill Gates because his stocks went up while everybody else’s went down.
73. dharma dude | 10.29.08
You won’t own me…(my theme song as I vote for McCain). I don’t work 12 hour days to have someone tell me what I will do with my money. Nope. Life’s too hard - and America is about free enterprise.
74. Doc | 10.29.08
of course most Americans don’t know what socialism is. half of Americans probably wouldn’t be able to describe how a democracy works if you asked them to! we are stupid. that’s why so many of us are drawn to Obama. he uses bigger words than the rest of us so we just assume hes intelligent enough to be our president. he still hasn’t told me exactly how he’s going to go about “changing” this country.
75. David | 10.29.08
Hey “Jim Bo”
I’d be really curious to hear what you think “socialism” means and how you think it applies to anything Obama is proposing. There’s not a damn thing socialist about expecting business and the rich to “spread the wealth” and here’s why:
I am one of those “Joe the Plumber” types that McCain like to talk about (exploit), and I am tired of the fact that even though the productivity of American workers steadily increases every year, our wages stagnate or decrease - while at the same time, the incomes of the richest in this country have increased to a point that is far beyond obscene.
When I was a kid, my dad worked for a company where everyone got profit sharing checks a couple times a year, and a nice Christmas bonus too. When’s the last time you talked to someone who got a profit sharing check from their employer? Ten years ago? Twenty? Today, most people have never even heard of a profit sharing check because “profit” is something reserved for corporate executives and shareholders - NOT the rest of us.
All that new wealth that our increased productivity helped create goes straight into the pockets of CEOs and their fellow executives.
So yeah - darn straight - I want a redistribution of wealth!
McCain says “let’s create new business and new wealth.” Why? Just so we can have another batch of overpaid CEOs who get rich off their employees and pay them just enough to keep them from revolting?
76. kim | 10.29.08
Obama is definitely a lying fool and this writer is just about as stupid as he is. NOBAMA is what we need
79. LogicalSC | 10.29.08
Should be about right, the Obama candidacy is about the same as a “ThighMaster” or a Ronco “Earn 6 trillion dollars in 30 days” book.
Lots of empty promises to fool the most gullible of our country.
80. Dave | 10.29.08
1. Anyone who calls Obama a socialist doesnt actually know what socialism is. Or has been too brainwashed to actually look into Obama’s policies themselves.
2. Guess who actually buys the stuff that leads to “big business” profits? The middle class. Giving the middle classers more money to spend leads directly to higher profit margins and thus counteracts the modest increase in taxes for them. It’s Economics 101. Reagonomics top down approach doesn’t work, as giving those with a ton of money more money doesnt give them reason to invest it. The middle class NEEDS products and services, so giving a tax break to the middle class helps everyone, including businesses. In fact the US GDP has grown something like 2% better under democrats in the last 100 years. The proof is in the pudding as they say.

“Not getting enough politics? Who has?” What kind of writing is that?
82. Spleen | 10.29.08
Eric - thank you for giving the best example of the inherent danger to electing Obama:
That is, once a social program is put into place, it only acts as justification for more. (not to mention it will never go away, no matter how ineffective it may be)
You defend Obama’s “socialist” (really closer to communist) plans by pointing to other socialist programs that have made it through in the past, which are killing us; welfare, social security, unemployment, etc. These plans are destroying our nation, yet we all consider them a necessary evil because we know we can never get rid of them. Not because they do any good, but because there is too much money and power involved to over turn them.
You jump to the illogical conclusion that “hey, these socialist programs don’t make us socialists, so why would a few more”.
(Contrary to what you state, pooling tax money for infrastructure investments that benefit all, or for security services such as fire and police, and an army - is NOT socialism.)
As for Sarah Palin’s “socialist” plan of charging corporations for the oil that comes from alaska’s ground - it’s not her plan. It’s written into Alaska’s state constitution. Sarah Palin being a conservative (as in a believer in founding law) enforced her states constitution and required the corporations to pay the people of the state for the oil they took from the state. That is NOT socialism.
You may want to get a good book on the subject and read up on it before you go blindly where the propaganda directs you.
Obama’s plan to force high income earners to send money to lower income earners is unprecendented in this nation.
America became america by being american. Obama, and most liberals, because of the liberal indoctrination program in american colleges, have developed an infatuation with europe. They put europe on a pedestal, and want us to be european.
I’d like to remind each and every liberal that Europe would be a much different place today, and enjoy much less freedom, if it weren’t for us dirty, boisterous, overly-proud americans.
You want socialism, go campaign in europe. Go live in a nation that doesn’t have to maintain much of an army because they know those dirty stinking money hungry stupid americans will always share thiers if anything bad happens.

I’m bsically a Republican .. of “old.” I believe in free markets (generally), and LESS government in everything BUT I see too much damage of the current free market, deregulation, and a “frozen” Congress, with Bush having too much power via the veto power and the cover-all of national security for all his actions.
I WANT “BIG” CHANGE … NOW !!
A Democratic THREESOME will get the change we must have, and get it soon. IF split (i.e., McCain Pres), he’s already stated **** veto everything with PORK.
What about insurance plans that HE doesn’t like? What about education plans HE doesn’t like? What about … etc., etc.
Another 4 years of a split threesom is NOT what is needed NOW; maybe later.
84. Tim | 10.29.08
To be honest, I don’t think either of the candidates really fits my view of good government (which is closer to Libertarian than Repub or Dem). That said, I am for Obama this time around given McCain is making the same promises as Obama (support home prices/”hard working Americans” who speculated on home prices, impliment protectionist policies to bring jobs back to the US (short term benefit, long-term harm), energy independence, more gov sponsored health care, etc), but telling people it won’t cost anything (unless no new taxes means something else). At least Obama is being somewhat honest by telling people it will cost money…

I am independent, mainly conservative, certainly not left.
You on the right have to stop following Rush’s language pollution. Obama is not socialist, and not even close. You are corrupting the language and the political process. Cut it out! The analog would be for those on the left to call McCain a Facist, that would not be fair either.

Well, you can be sure that my family will not be watching BO tonight. Frankly, I’m sick of his arrogance and elitism. He and Michelle are nauseating. Every time any one of them is on TV, I switch the channel. I can’t stand a smooth talking liar. I’m amazed at how many people have been deceived by him. Being calm, smooth, slick, and “wordy” does not make you presidential material. Hopefully, “good” will prevail and “evil” will be wiped away never to be seen again in the future.

The United States has hit debt-ceiling, our economy is crumbling, our war in Iraq was a waste of money and our only hopefulls are an old guy and an in-experienced smiley guy?
But im voting anyway, and when I do so, I will be constantly asking myself whether I was right or not.
89. hewet | 10.29.08
I now laugh when people call Obama a socialist, and it took a “regular Joe” to figure it out. REALLY? all the republican analysts conviniently JUST found that out, two weeks before voting? (when all other arguments, celeberty, terrorist, bla bla bla failed). come on people, no one should be that stupid.
This is not the first time taxes were raised on the wealthy. This is also not the first time the middle/lower class gets a tax break–therefore this is not socialism. This is however, the first time the government has ownership of NATIONAL Banks–this sounds a bit like socialism but McCain even admitted it’s needed in a time of crisis! please please please let’s start using our brains in this country!
90. Chris Hanks | 10.29.08
John McCain is void of any new ideas, that is why he can only attack Obama. What type of experience is he talking about? Cheney and the rest of Bush’s rolodex is filled with experience, look where its taken us. I personally like our “socialized” fire and police departments andeducation system as I could not afford a private education for my child.
91. Martinator | 10.29.08
Last time I checked, Bush was “implementing” socialism.
2004 Largest Medicare entitlement plan in the history of the US.
“It is the largest expansion of Medicare since the program was created in 1965, …
Nationalizing AIG.
Taking part ownership of banks.
Big Government has gotten bigger, not smaller, under the Bush Administration and the Republican controlled congress.
The only difference between Bush’s (and McCain’s) “Socialisn” and Obama’s “Socialism” is that the Republican brand of Socialism benefits the wealthy (Corporations) at the expense of the middle and lower class.
92. Emzad | 10.29.08
Eric, very true. Obama’s plan is not complete socialism, it is just increasing the size and scope of government, which I am not for.
Jimmy, at this point I am inclined to believe you. McCain does not inspire me in any way shape or form. This is mainly because his message and his voting record do not match up. For someone who is against “socialism” he signed that “rescue bill” without must hesitation. Being the economic conservative that I am, McCain is just as bad as Obama, but as you mentioned… at least Obama give people hope. Maybe next time around the GOP will find themselves a real conservative. And Palin! What was he thinking? I was hoping more for Senator Dole at the very least. Now that would have really helped him out. They could have really played up Obama’s lack of experience. As it is, this election I will either be sitting at home, or voting for Bob Barr. At least he is against bigger government.
93. Robbie | 10.29.08

I see proponents from each side imploring the other side ‘educate’ themselves. Opinions… everybody has one. Mostly I believe it’s important to not believe everything ANY one tells us. We’ll need to work together, whoever wins, as another writer already pointed out. It’s just as cheap to bad mouth each other as it is to bad mouth the candidates. Vote your conscience, vote your head, don’t vote your fear. Whoever wins, let’s work together to move forward. That’s how we progress, which is inevitable by the way.
95. kenneth | 10.29.08
I will watch because I am very interested in this unique election. It would be fascinating to see Senator McCain in a half-hour spot as well. Perhaps the RNC could raise the money for similar programming if there is enough time.
I do not think the MSM has been fawning over Obama. In many circumstances, throughout this whole election process, I have found the media to be slanted toward McCain the war hero. But McCain’s erratic campaign is imploding and the media has no option but to report the events that are happening.
96. Newt | 10.29.08
By the time this economy is done tanking, you goobers will be *praying* for a little socialism. Especially you pampered boomers, who are in for a rude, rude awakening when you all try to sell a lifetime’s worth of stocks & oversized houses to approximately fifteen underpaid Gen-X Walmart clerks.
Seriously, talk about voting against your own economic interests! What’s WRONG with you? The man says “I want to cut taxes on the middle class, and raise it on the top 1% of earners.” …And you want to ARGUE with him? Like you haven’t been sufficiently gouged by a society with rules slanted for the rich yet?
YOU. ARE. NOT. RICH. Neither is Joe the Plumber - he’s a tool that DREAMS about being rich, never will, but votes for tax cuts for Warren Buffett anyway.
WAKE UP!
97. Smitty | 10.29.08
Come on people .. this is an infomercial… if you think this is going to tel you more about Obama then I have a bridge to sell you. If he were to put hard core honest people asking him hard core honest questions that have not been prescreened then maybe JUST maybe this would be something worth watching. But this is just a sad example of how MONEY can buy the presidency. It’s a sad day in our history when something like this happens.
Just remember one thing this could be the most critical election in our nations history - we are at war with people who believe the only victory in our annihilation so I hope that the Obama supporters are right to trust him and the direction he wants to take us because if not you just did tremendous damage to our nation. We know so very little about him and what we do know is questionable at best. Argue that we know him all you want but we don’t…there are many sides to Obama the question is - which one is real? God help us all if your wrong.
98. independent | 10.29.08
If you are against any form of socialism, then YOU should get on a plane. OR, refuse social security, police and military protection, pubic education, transportation infrastructure, and any disaster relief. If you are making money in this country, you got there because of the support of the entire community around you. We live in a SOCIETY (sounds awfully close to SOCIALISM) that supports and is supposed to help people succeed. That cannot happen without taxes. Without taxes 99.9% of us would not be where we are today, there would be no opportunities for advancement, the ultra rich would retain power. So wake up, unless you ad your parents are in the upper 1% income bracket, you have probably benefited more than what you have paid.
I read these comments with disbelief that my fellow Americans can be so ignorant. Then again, we elected Bush, and we deserve everything that has happened due to his redistribution of wealth scheme, his failed foreign policies, and the deregulation of corporate America. Big corporations do not have your best interest at hand, wake up call #2. They are bound by law to maximize profits any way possible.
Capitalism (as we force it down everyone throats) is not really capitalism. We subsidize big corporate interests to help stabilize markets, including oil, food production, and now banks. This is a redistribution of wealth on a scale that far exceeds any kind of social program in this country. In many sectors we do not have competition in the market, and often we have to step in to break up monopolies.
I really hope more than anything, regardless of who wins the election, this process will force people to truly educate themselves, and not by the random talking point emails that go around, but by opening their eyes and seeing that overall the entire system of government is broke.
99. Ken | 10.29.08
“He was in office for two years and then decided to run for president. I am not saying McCain is perfect but at least he has been around the block a little bit. I am not for the “old boys” club but we are in real trouble with an economy that is starting to fall apart.”
Tell that to JFK or Lincoln, two of the most beloved Presidents in our history, how long did they serve in Congress for?
All this socialism talk is a joke anyways, if half of you could open your eyes to the current system you’d realize this is no different than what anyone else is proposing, and not nearly as extreme as the stuff that’s gone on for the past 70 years.
There are far worse things Obama could be saying about McCain, like how he’s managed to alienate nearly ever conservative Republican in Congress. We’d have a President who would veto everything Congress brought to his desk, and a Congress who would veto everything the President brought to the floor. Nothing would be accomplished and we’d have a repeat of Carter. Sounds like a blast!
By the way, why do republicans seem to only care about personal rights when it comes to guns? illegal search and seizure, entrapment, phone tapping, etc, is all ok, JUST DON’T TAKE THE GUNS!!!
100. ObamaMama | 10.29.08
Marie, you certainly have the right idea. If you don’t want to see it, it’s as simple as turn the channel (you don’t actually have to FIND something else to do). Oh, and tell others like you they can do the same, although those of us Obamians, unlike you, who strive for unity of all, would love you to join us.
Make love not war.

I’ve heard a lot of people say they are glad Oboma is going to take wealth from the rich and give it to the middle class. what I’ve been hearing is that
The United Stated of America is the richest country in the world and it needs to spread it’s wealth around the world to those less fortunate.
I believe Barac will try to apease nations who hate the USA by giving them our wealth and making consessions through negoatiations. weakening our alility to defend ourselves aganst those who will NEVER be satisfied until.
We as a nation are destroyed. Health care will get worse, taxes will go up for everyone, freedoms will be lost and this generation will remember what it lost.
102. E. McCarthy | 10.29.08
The way the candidates have run the election is a great example of how they will run their White House. McCain has cow towed to his party and has run a filthy campaign. Palin was selected to help him win over the right wing conservatives. She was not selected to help him govern. It’s a MESS over in the GOP. They should be ashamed & embarrased! Obama on the other hand has risen above the garbage and run a BRILLIANT campaign. He has surrounded himself with intelligent people. Not bimbos. He selected Joe Biden to help him govern, not to be a “yes” man. Biden is much more qualified to be second in command than Palin. Let’s put a smart man of integrity back into the white house so that we can gain back the respect of the entire free world. If the rest of the world could vote, Obama would win by a tremendous landslide.
103. james gagliardi | 10.29.08
Yeesh. I’m voting for Sarah Palin…which means I guess I have to vote for that dude she’s running with. It’s about time teh world has to face an American woman as our leader. All these other jerks sure haven’t done us a lot of good recently. It’s time to let a woman’s sensabilities be in the forefront. Of course, all the hidden and overt sexists and racists are tripping over themselves to put the lady down. They should get a grip. This Obama guy is just a blank slate.
And yet…I kinda hope this Obama guy DOES get elected. Finally, finally, when he has to do unavoidable stuff for our country that most of the world is against, I can’t wait to see the reactions. What are people going to say when the world continues to look at us with hate even though we elected this Obama guy? What are the crybabies going to be saying then? Lots and lots of folks are gonna be eating their words…esp. when they realize that having a “black” guy (another canard, this Obama guy is not “black”, they just want you to think he is. Guess they forgot that he could just as easily be called “white” considering his background.) in charge is not going to stop the haters around the world from hating us as a nation. It’s not going to stop the swarmy Europeans from hating us, it’s not going to stop the slimy greedy OPEC suckers from hating us, it’s not going to stop the human-rights ignoring Chinese from hating us.
We’re Americans. The rest of the world is jealous of us. They don’t care who our President is. And they ain’t gonna start “liking” us either. They want our nation to fall, to collapse. We should be telling them to shove it up their culos instead of trying to be, like, “Oh, pwease, pwease, LIKE US!” That’s just pathetic.
104. Obama Drama Mama | 10.29.08
You are absolutely right Doc …
At “least” 1/2 of Americans are stupid and maybe more of them.
A majority of Obama’s supporters couldn’t tell you who his running mate is and if you told them it was Sarah Palin they would agree with you.
One only has to look at Obama’s own words to realize that he is in love with Socialist and Marxist ideas. He is a radical who I fear has not defined for himself the differences between Marxism, Socialism and Liberalism. And the differences between the three are slight at best.
Our government HAS taken steps to socialize the banking industry under a Democratic congress and a scared President who is trying to put a bandaid on Liberal policies started by the Clinton regime and championed by Dodd and Frank.
We don’t need Obama to further this decline in our “Representative” Democratic-Republic. We need to band together and quit being so divided. This country needs to be taken back by the people … not by professional politicians like Barack Hussein Obama.

If you don’t already have enough information about which candidate to vote on then your head must have been in the sand for the last year. Obama’s informercial filled with all the lies and half truths about what great things he plans for our Great country will not be on in my home because I have heard enough about his plans to redistribute wealth from hard working AMericans to people who don’t even pay any taxes. Obama will kill what is left of our economy with all the help of the illegal voters his organization has registered.
I just saw an article asking what are Palin’s religious beliefs, more importantly what are Obamas since he sat in the congregation of Reverend Wright for 20 years.
Obama is a left wing liberal that has 100% backing of our media. His policies will divide this country.
Think people before you vote. Vote for the good of the country.

You know it’s a sad day when there are so many people willing to vote for a liar and cheat like Obama. The man promised to take Federal funds to run his campaign and this ½ hour diatribe is the result of that lie. He has out spent McCain 8 to 1 by most estimates and a man of honor and true valor is being swept away by this lying cheat. No matter that he has no experience or that he will put into place the most liberal agenda since LBJ sent 250,000 of us to Vietnam. My friends you are about to see what the true meaning of liberalism means with a full load of Democrats governing this fine nation. Expect to see more taxes on business – oh that’s ok by you? Well what do you think those businessmen do when presented with new taxes pay them and go on, nope they raise the price of their goods and pass that little tax increase right on to the end consumer you and I. Also expect more jobs to leave this country due to the liberal increases in taxes and rules to keep us all PC.

This article is clearly biased, as is a dissapointing piece to see flying under the “Christian Science Monitor” flag.
Personally, I could not care whether you vote Republican or Democrat (I mean, I do care… I have my own views and beliefs about our best direction forward), but do not write a piece that so obviously forces one candidate down everyone’s throat, and makes snide remarks regarding the other.
Choice is something that should be left up to every individual voter, I’m afraid with more mindless articles such as this all we’re left with is garbage.

Sarah Palin is a Marxist
Alaska: America’s Socialist State
Sarah Palin’s home state of Alaska is the MOST Socialist state in these United States, and she’s proud of it!
Alaska has no income or sales tax!
That’s because it imposes huge levies on the oil companies that lease its oil fields.
First the state government takes it’s hefty cut, then it redistributes the wealth, cutting a four-figure annual check to every man, woman, and child in the state.
Sarah Palin was happy to increase this year’s check by $1200, bringing the per-person total to $3,269, helping her maintain her popularity as Governor.
I wonder how that’s not “buying” votes?
Sarah Palin is proud of her state’s collective wealth-redistribution scheme.
Sarah Palin said,
“We’re set up, unlike other states in the union,
where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources.
So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.”
Right out of the Karl Marx play book!
113. ScottInMA | 10.29.08
I’m just glad to see that Obama stuck with his pledge to use federal funding so that neither candidate ends up trying to buy the election. Oh wait… that’s right: he DIDN’T! I forgot that keeping his word means nothing to the man, especially when there is an opportunity for profit and advantage. It’s funny how many Obama supporters are former Bush supporters, it’s understandable though since those voters seem to ignore the facts and are now trying to feel better about their own past mistakes by making a new mistake that they think is different.
114. Kerry from Buffalo | 10.29.08
Simply put, conservatives are typically against change (ideologically as well as intrinsically). Obama’s “Change” tagline is undoubtedly a marketing tactic, but it is generally realized that liberalism is more friendly to change in general. Of course not all change is good, but the one thing that is a constant in life is “change.” We must have people running this country to be more willing to drop old stereotypes, unify our diverse population, and move us forward to new ways of thinking. Religious conservatism is going to do that? While there may be something to say of spiritualism, religion is thankfully waning and will hopefully, along with all of its prejudices and divisive ways of thinking, be gone from our society someday in the future.

Aloha - you may consider Germany to be the perfect place to live with the perfect government, but I’d like to remind you as you’re probably too young to remember - that a mere 60 years ago your country was burning millions of jews, destroying the lives of hundreds of millions of innocent people across europe, and trying to dominate the world.
Your nation was stripped of its army, and it was forced by America and England to become more civilized. WE rebuilt your power grids that don’t fail. The peace and freedom you relax in was given to you by england and america.
Your country now doesn’t NEED to pay billions for defense because you know america is here. You know that as cocky as we may be, or how we sit on our couches watching tv, that whenever something goes horribly wrong in the world it’s going to be the american bad-ass that stands up for what is right, and fights for it.
We would never expect a thank you, but how DARE you come to a site like this, stick you nose into american politics, and try to put US down!

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done
Pure democracy-
Democracy in which the power is exercised directly by the people rather than through representatives
Every modern government is socialist. We started being socialist when we made child labor laws, worker safety laws and minimum wage laws. I say we should revoke all of those laws and exist without any aspect of socialism in our country.
Oh wait, we did that once…. and worker would be shot by their employers if they dared ask for better wages or living conditions (as the company controlled all of that)
There is a reason why our government has socialized aspects of our country. Try opening an American History book and reading about it. Read in particular about how Pinkerton detectives opened fire on union workers in a fight over working conditions. About 10 year old American children working in factories and losing body parts to machines. About how even with children working in factories, families were continually in debt to the corporations that controlled them. No sick leave, and the company stores charged high enough prices (charged to their paycheck) to guarantee that these people were slaves in fact, if not in name.
Barack Obama is no more a socialist than John McCain. Does John McCain want to get rid of child labor laws and get rid of public education??? No???
Then John Sidney McCain is a socialist, as big a socialist as Barack Obama.

It is really quite frightening how the Republican party can throw up a word like “socialism” and have their rabid, delusional followers react so viscerally against the candidate who CLEARLY has the most comprehensive and solid plan for leading our fine Country. Please, EVERYONE, do yourself a favor and read through Barack Obama’s web site (www.barackobama.com), especially areas like the Tax Calculator. On a selfish note, I hope that those who are so unwilling for a positive change in our Republic are voting in non-swing states. Respectfully.

Obama Obama Obama!
What have the GOP done with the real McCain? I don’t know this guy they have been parading around. Anybody else feel like this election is like an episode of beverly hillbillies? Palin is like the female Jethro. Of course, if McCain was Unlce Jed he would be more likely to get my vote.
126. Jenn | 10.29.08
I agree with you Derrick! Not that I want to vote for McCain but I really have no choice. All I know is this….I am not a one to follow. I learn on my own and come to my own conclusion. I am way too busy as a business owner and mother of four to watch T.V and I think too many of you watch too much T.V.!!
Look at the records of each candidate and then decide. It really is a no brainer and I am so surprised and somewhat outraged to hear people’s comments. It is also scary to think that so many American’s are voting for Hussein because they think he will be different and bring about change. You people need to research your candidate before you vote for him. When you do you will find that Hussein has no experience and the experience he does have is not good! He is a TALKER, he is pretty on the outset. That is about it! His record shows he is a follower with no mind of his own. He is not about change. From his past it seems the change he will bring will be to our demise. McCain does have experience and a past of voting AGAINST Bush. His record shows many votes against Bush! LOOK IT UP! Stop listening to the media who is controlled by our Government and get with it. The media is controlling you. Stop watching it and get a mind of your own and look at their (candidates) history. McCain being a POW should make you realize he will not send our men in harms way or keep them their much longer because he KNOWS first hand the dangers they are in. Not to mention his sons being in harms way as we speak. As far as which will give us money…not tax us..Get real! Both will do it because this country is BROKER than a joke. They will get their money, don’t worry. Worry about the end of the world or the end of our economy!? The economy is already SH**! The end of the world will come if Hussein is elected because his talking will not get him anywhere with countries in the middle east. That is fact! McCain has been around long enough to have been there done that, lets try something different. He knows the mistakes that have been made and is smart enough not to make them again. He is qualified to say the least for the most important job in the world. One has expereince, the other looks pretty and sounds good, which would you hire? DUH!!!!!

The politics of fear started in my lifetime with Richard Nixon. I noticed Ms Palin has attempted to resurrect his memory by invoking the “silent majority”. The politics of fear play to your basest instincts, not your brain. There is a reason you are so afraid of Mr Obama, and it has NOTHING to do with socialism-a philosophy, I am sure, most would be hardput to define. It is a useful, and clever, buzz word being used to mask what is at the heart of your fear - a black man in the white house as something other than a security guard. Let’s face it, Colin Powell was just the head of Security. Having spent most of your life casting unwarranted aspersions on blacks, the fact that you KNOW you cross to the other side of the street whenever you see a black man, or group of black youths, approaching and you are simply uncomfortable with the idea of that same black man running your country. You have repeated every joke, slur, and racist comment; you have agreed with all of them. There is a mindset with which you have lived, which your father and grandfather fostered, and you cannot get away from it. I feel very sorry for you. While you were mired in the past, the future came calling, and caught you unprepared; not unlike those two neo-nazi jerks with their grandiose plans of assassination. It is the 21st century. And nothing that was will ever be again. Your children and grandchildren will wonder what all the fuss was about - and not understand any of your explanations. I strongly suggest counseling, you are going to be suffering PTSD come November 5th, and may be in danger of losing what is left of your mind come January 20th, 2009.

Obama’s preacher of 20 years damn’s America. I pray that if Obama gets elected that God looks over America. I never thought I would see the day a man who refuses to wear the American flag on his lapel, or cross his heart during the pledge of allegiance would actually have a chance to become president. This man, while having the talk and the walk is the scariest thing I have ever seen. America will not be the same if he gets elected.

Amazing that this ’socialism’ talking point keeps coming up. Most of those saying it can’t even define it other than it’s ‘bad’. Income tax IS redistributing the wealth. Tax credits for health care IS socialist.
Why you all are so afraid of this kind of democratic socialism is beyond me. I grew up in Canada where I had excellent health care (better than I get here) at no cost. Yes it’s not as good as what the rich have here but it’s way better than what everybody else has. Which is why the US is 17th in life expectancy (behind Columbia).
Some amount of socialism is required, roads, police, health care. All basic services that we all should have and not begrudge a reasonable tax amount to pay for.
Instead of buying into the Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt being shoveled by the Republican party, why don’t you educate yourself on what these terms really mean? I’m always amazed at how Americans are scared of everything: Communism, Socialism, Terrorism, Muslims. Instead of running in fear why understand what you’re talking about first?

Really a shame to read such inappropriate sarcasm and pro-Obama rhetoric. Any independent using the content of tonight’s infomercial to make their final voting decision should really think to themselves “Is Obama telling us everything tonight, or just making more sunbstanceless open-ended promises that hopefully ring so well in my ear I forget about his checkered past and inexperience?”
131. Areyouserious | 10.29.08
Just a couple of comments.
One, its fairly pointless to debate “Socialism” with the ignorant masses who believe our county is a “Democracy.”
Second, when did “Peace and Diplomacy” become the agenda of the axis of evil?
Finally, reducing our military funding by 25% would mean our war machine would have to try and survive with a measly 37 or 38 times the amount of military spending by all other countries on the planet combined. That doesn’t include the creative accounting where we claim our tax dollars are supporting the war on drugs, etc.
132. Abhijit | 10.29.08
For people, who are saying that this will be another undetailed, unquestioned ad by obama, I have one thing to say, John Mccain got not one, not two but three chances to question or magnify loopholes in obama policies in nationally televised debates, what did he do? NOTHING!! He even tried to evade Bill Ayers question, because he knew it won’t stick…republicans only throw smear campaigns, allegations, underground attacks at the back during their so called patriotic rallies/negative vitriolic ads, but not when they get a chance to deal them in an open candid manner in front of everyone..all the false accusations include Obama being marxist, pals around with terrorists, will turn israel into palestine etc. etc.
133. Les | 10.29.08
Obama tells his constituents, “I am going to use my office to steal the money of other Americans and give it to you.” And people think that is OK? He has surrounded himself with Socialists and Marxists. A couple are well known, but he also campaigned for a senator from Vermont who ran as an independent, but is a member of the Democratic American Socialist party. Don’t believe me, wiki Bernie Sanders and you’ll see for yourself. An interview recently has been released from a radio station where Barack Obama said the civil rights movment didn’t go far enough, why, because the courts didn’t redistribute the wealth in America. Taxing people that make 200K at an obsene level so issue checks to people that don’t pay tax won’t help anyone, but it will trap people in the middle class.
Obama himself acknowledges that he was drawn to socialists and even Marxists as a college student. He continued to associate with Marxists later in life, even choosing to launch his political career in the living room of a self-described Marxist, William Ayers, in 1995, when Obama was 34.
Obama’s affinity for Marxists began when he attended Occidental College in Los Angeles.
“To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully,” the Democratic presidential candidate wrote in his memoir, “Dreams From My Father.” “The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists.”
Obama’s interest in leftist politics continued after he transferred to Columbia University in New York. He lived on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, venturing to the East Village for what he called “the socialist conferences I sometimes attended at Cooper Union.”

Am I saying I am great? no! I am saying- for McCain or Obama; either way, do something if you feel as strongly about your country and it’s leadership for the next 4 years. It’s rather sad that what was once considered one of the most respected newspapers in the world has been taken over by neo-cons. This blog is just one example. Describing it as “non-partisan” is like calling Fox News “fair and balanced.” What on earth happened?

To those of you who think Socialism/Redistribution isn’t so bad, I invite you to go spend some time over in Zimbabwe where Mugabe took farms from knowledgeable, productive people and “spread the wealth” to those who had no clue of what to do with them. Now, the country is in turmoil and folks are starving.
137. Billy McGorn | 10.29.08
If I have to listen to one more McCain supporter blathering on about Obama being a socialist… Republicans, remember your hero, George W Bush, testament to the free market’s power to trickle down to all those in need? Wanna know how that turned out? IT ENDED WITH TAXPAYERS GIVING WALL STREET $800 BILLION, courtesy of George W Bush and his crony, Hank Paulson. If the government taking ownership in the private sector isn’t (*gasp!*) socialism, then what exactly is YOUR definition of socialism? Obviously ultra-large tax cuts for the wealthiest of the wealthy and trickle-down economics didn’t work out too well.
Get a clue… The government already redistributes wealth through the military-industrial complex, massive tax cuts for oil companies and pharmaceutical giants, and $800 BILLION FOR WALL STREET, and you’re complaining about a TAX CUT for the lower-to-middle classes?! Quit towing the McCain campaign’s line about “Obama the Socialist” and listen to your arguments for a second, maybe you’ll realize how completely groundless they are.

Another way to prove to the America that he’s the candidate that looks the best on television and in the limelight - - isn’t that what us American’s want? We don’t need someone who knows what they are doing or how to make a good decision. The writer of this article is an extremely ignorant person and needs a whack upside the head and then maybe it would knock some sense into him.
I know I’ll not be wasting my 30 mins. I’ve got much better things to do with my time. I know who I’m voting for; the answer is clear.
141. louis | 10.29.08
You’re scared that “Republicans want something to go wrong so they can say I told you so?” Hmm… So you forgot to be scared when Democrat Harry Reid declared “If things improve in Iraq, it will be bad for the Democratic party”? You somehow missed the Democratic glee at the current economic crisis? (More unemployed workers, means more people who need handouts. We’ll promise handouts and they’ll become dependent on us. They’ll Have to vote Democrat!) You didn’t notice the constant harping and deliberate efforts of Democrats to make the US look bad abroad (from Nancy Pelosi prancing off to talk with Syria, a state-sponsor of terrorism that we have no diplomatic ties with to a Democratic official statement of condemnation of the Ottoman empire for genocide–timed perfectly to tick off Turkey at the moment it was ready to bomb inside Iraq and endanger US efforts in Iraq) –so that they could win the next election? The leadership of the Democratic party thrives on gloom and doom and despair and they have been working toward and praying for it all along. How ironic your comment is. Time to watch news that doesn’t come from the New York Times or MSNBC.

143. Cheryl from FL | 10.29.08
Obama will win by a landslide…not because the vast majority of voters have been bamboozled by OBAMA, but because people from all walks of life finally have someone worth voting for. I’m tired of electing people who have had their lives handed to them. Lets face it…Bush got in with his name and a silver spoon hanging from his mouth. McCain…again comes from money. Barack Obama represents the common American…the American dream where, if you try, you can achieve anything. Bush never represented the common American…Clinton did. And Obama will. If we aren’t going to “redistribute” money…then we had might as well be a monarchy…where the only people that move ahead are those with a fancy name and money. That isn’t what this country is about…nor should it be. Everyone deserves a chance at a higher education if they are willing to give back to their country. Under the current administration, middle class children cannot attend college. Their parents make just a bit too much to get financial aid and not enough to afford it. The middle class has been forgotten and we are going to take back this country as a result.
OBAMA 2008 - by a landslide victory.
144. Abhijit | 10.29.08
Well, people who say obama will again give a speech which will be mostly unquestioned, and will not detail about his policies, will not answer people’s doubts about him. I say this, mccain got three chances to question that in debates. What did he do? Nothing..He even tried to evade bill ayers issue because he knew it won’t stick..Republicans only beileve in smear/negative/false campaigns…

If Obama is truly ahead in this race, then why waste money to air an infomercial why so many of us are hurting. It shows lack of responsbility, accountabilty, and prioritization.
147. roland | 10.29.08
People seem to think about socialism in an extreme way. A little bit of socialism never hurt anybody. Look at European countries where health care and college is free and when you dial 911 the cops show up before you want them to. You pay more taxes but you get a lot in return. You don’t have to worry about health insurance and college graduates don’t start their life $20,000 to $50,000 in debt.
And to talk about taxes, the taxes pay for public schools and road work and other projects in your city/town. What do you think will happen if we cut taxes even more? If you don’t think we need to improve Americas infrastructure then don’t complain if you hit a pothole.
148. DR | 10.29.08
I’m amazed that in this day and age, so many of us still make for great puppets. To be clear, I’m an Independent and have yet to make up my mind, but I’m definitely leaning towards Obama. The Obama/Biden ticket doesn’t stand for Socialism. Those of you saying that it does need to learn to stand on your own two feet, and to steer clear of those sound bites being offered up on silver platters. You’re all too gullible. It’s shameful.
To say that Obama/Biden represent Socialism would clearly mean that McCain/Palin represent the same. Folks, the latest meltdown of our economy, and the subsequent (and undoubtedly most ridiculous) solution to fixing it by using taxpayer dollars is a form of socialism, but in this case we’re spreading the wealth of the American people right back to the select few wealthy (aka Top 5%) who got us into this mess in the first place.
Both McCain and Obama voted for this bill, as did the majority, so what does that tell you?
I would have voted for McCain, no questions asked, had he not fumbled by putting Palin on his ticket. His desperation was evident then, and it’s only become worse over the past two weeks.
149. Amy from Michigan | 10.29.08
The amount of money this infomercial probably costs to run by Obama is sickening. The amount of money these politicians drum up in a time of economic insecurity to waste on ridiculous stunts like this is just nauseating! I’m terrified about my family’s future. The worry is always there and all this guy can do is just spend spend spend! I was still teeter-tottering before but I definitely can say I will not vote for Obama now.
150. pour Obama | 10.29.08
I agree with Eric’s comment. He has hit the nail ” We already have socialism in the form of Police Departments, Fire Departments, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Public Works such as road and bridge building and maintenance, Corporate Welfare, Welfare, WIC, Food Stamps, Unemployment Benefits…”
John McCain & Co should be embarrassed for coming out such a gaffe!
America knows in our heart of hearts, it was the Republicans that got us into this mess and despair - a little unbiased (non FOX) research on our part will reveal that. The records would show the Republicans had unfettered majority rule of the US Congress from 1994-2006 (12 years).
Thus due to 12 years of mismanagement by the Republicans Party, America is now on its knees.
If any Republican had a clear conscious he/she should be embarrassed enough to NOT risk voting in a Republican!!
151. Alex | 10.29.08
McSame is relying on negative framing to make people *fear* Barack Obama, in a general sense. He doesn’t attack Obama’s political stances as much as he makes people fear the man. This is just like what the Bush administration did after 9/11 to make us afraid of terror and give up some of our rights. Look at the issues, know that ALL media is biased, and VOTE.
152. murph | 10.29.08
Redistribution of wealth is only one tenet of Socialism. It’s not like we’re talking about nationalizing private industries like health care or banking, or talking about mandatory government service…Oh wait…

153. PALynne | 10.29.08
I have to say, America is blessed with a sense-of-humor. One comment is funnier than the next! No matter what, we’re about to learn a lesson - again! We only LOVE our candidates before they are elected, and years after they leave office. Four to eight years from now, we’ll be calling the president a loser (and worse). We should all be grateful that ANYONE runs for an office based on the way we treat them.
154. Manda | 10.29.08
I’m not going to listen to what this man has to say tonight. Americans are smarter than he thinks they are. He thinks we are all chained to the tv and this is his last plea to all of them. McCain wants to private social security-just as Bush wanted to- privatization of SS will cost us trillions in benefits over the next decades ..for the first time in HISTORY he wants to tax your medical benefits .. and give you $5000 !! WHOA ..$5000 goes no where near buying reasonable medical coverage for familes … his policy will potentially force companies to drop their medical coverage for their employees…. then see how far that $5000 will take you … McCain has repeatedly voted AGAINST equal pay for equal work for women and wants to abolish Roe vs Wade which gives women the right to CHOOSE .. His policies are a throw back to the olden days .. an era in which he still lives … I’ll take my chances w/Obama
156. Mike / Asheville, NC | 10.29.08
@jenn: You need to think about the last couple of elections when you say this: “If he [Obama] is elected it will be on you not me!!” Even though I did not vote for Bush, I squarely place the blame of him being in office (2 terms no less) on myself. This is because WE as Americans are responsible for our government in totality. Don’t vote for Obama, don’t vote at all — no matter to me — you are still responsible for your government and the elected officials.
I think after a while though, you will lose this anger that the McCain campaign has planted in you. Especially after you see some REAL tax relief instead of a “tax cut” which benefits the most elite in this country. Especially after you see our troops come home, proud of the job they have done, and we will not lose anymore troops to a war which should have never been started.
157. TXBubba | 10.29.08
John McCain has been a senator for 26 years and showed no ambition or desire to understand the economy (by his own admission). Yes, what we need is another family scion without any intellectual curiosity for president now. Haven’t we had enough of that in the last 8 years, folks?
Go OBAMA

To all the people crying “socialist”, see if you can place this quote:
“The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. . . . The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. . . . It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.”
Obama? It would have to be, as he’s advocating that the wealth be redistributed. No capitalist would argue such a thing, right?
Wrong. This is a quote from “The Wealth of Nations” by Adam Smith, the father of capitalism. I suppose you’re going to call him socialist too?
162. Jessica | 10.29.08
Republican nuts worried about their precious money.. go figure. Like many before me have said, LOOK UP the definition of “socialism”. Then look up what various degrees of this *evil* system have been a part of our own nation for decades, if not centuries. Then again, these are some of the same people who probably think America is a true democracy.. as if they could pinpoint a definition for that term either.
And bravo! to every Obama donator out there. Our combined efforts have run the Republican political money machine in the ground this election season. I’m honored to put my money into this effort in hopes of establishing the framework for a better future in America, not one filled with the greed of the GOP and its scaremongering tactics.
And as always… GO PHILS!

The Tax Threshold just got lowered. Obama has been telling us all this time that those of us making $250,000 or less will not pay any additional taxes. His latest TV ad has changed it to $200,000. And now Biden has said it is $150,000.
What next, $100,000, then $50,000??
The Democrats curse the rich Republicans of America and spit on their success. I ask you, when was the last time a poor man offered you a job? Did you submit a job application to a failing business that was getting ready to close it’s doors. I didn’t think so.
The left started attacking “Joe the Plumber”, and he is your average American trying to get ahead! This tells me all I need to know about the left. Oh yeah, tolerant of others…..until they know your political position. These attacks on Joe should give everyone pause to see just what is going on.
It is time everyone took responsibility for themselves and work smarter to get ahead. But others would rather have the government give them handouts to heal their self-pity.
174. Hank Rearden | 10.29.08
Obama? Oh brother!
Fact: Obama and the Democratic Party support Socialist ideals.
Fact: Socialist nations enjoy an average standard of living below that of the USA.
If you think it is a good idea to make everyone equal and don’t understand that it means making everyone equally poor, you must have attended public school. If you understand this and still support ’social equality’ you are, or are destined to be, a failure in life. Obama is dangerous to our frail economy. Read Ayn Rand! Understand that the ‘evil rich’, for better or worse, drive our economy and provide the jobs that feed your families.
Right now I make $25,000 per year. Someday, through hard work and sacrafice, I will make many times this sum. You can do the same thing; this is America! Upward mobility is only possible when one is not punished for being successful. Don’t be fooled by class warfare tactics. Don’t be jelous of the wealthy, learn how they became wealthy and do the same.
The Democrats will tell you that no single person can make it without the government. The Republicans talk the talk, but when elected, tax and spend our nation to the brink of economic collapse. In short, the system is broken: Vote Libertarian!
175. American | 10.29.08
Obama has people so confused, it is pathetic. I, for one, do not espouse the beliefs of Karl Marx nor Obama. Socialism is evil if practiced the way Marx and Obama wish it to be. If we had the kind of socialistic society Jesus espoused, it would be fine. I didn’t work myself half to death to have the slackers who worked with me, doing nothing much, get the pay I made. Wake up to what this professorial liar is trying to do to us.
176. Patrick | 10.29.08
Socialism is taking $700 billion of our money and donating it to big bankers. Both Tweedledum Obama and Tweedledee McCain are guilty.
America isn’t a democracy and never has been, it’s supposed to be a representative republic. We lost our status as a representative republic long ago, Benjamin Franklin was right about our getting a republic “if you can keep it.”
Well, we didn’t and now we have a festering mess of politicians.
We need to change our politicians as frequently as we change our kids’ diapers - and for the same reason.
177. Aaron | 10.29.08
Both Barack Obama and John McCain will most likely do nothing to close the budget deficit.
The two party political system is corrupt and broken. Both parties have their fingers in the cookie jar.
It’s time to bring more choices to the voters and break the duopoly on power.
We can all probably agree that Barack is a good speaker, but does anyone really know how he will stand on any substantive issues. He changes positions constantly to suit the political wind. He hasn’t left any record of accomplishment or even of much ideas (except opposition to the Iraq War - relatively safe when you’re an inner city State Senator) in his years in office.
As for McCain, I think we can all agree that the attacks on his age have been disgraceful and disrespectful to someone who served our country and was tortured for years as a P.O.W. On the other hand, his campaign has been divisive and anti-intellectual.
My choice? Bob Barr and the Libertarians, the ones who really believe government spending is out of control, who want to reform the entitlement programs and who want to preserve our rights and liberties. Check it out - http://www.bobbarr2008.com/
Plus how cool would it be to have a President with a moustache! ![]()
Especially if you live in a state where McCain or Obama seem guaranteed of victory and the polls aren’t even close, why not vote for the third party (Libertarian, Green, whatever) that most matches your views. It’s better for everyone when there are more choices in the voting booth.

What is my point you may wonder? It’s easy: why on earth are you americans scared shitless of the words “Liberal” and “Socialist”? It appears to us non-americans that you people don’t actually know what those words mean. Yes, seriously.

I am sooooo glad I have a nice Netflix movie waiting for me tonight. Will be easy to miss Obama’s last minute desperation attempt.
For all of you who are waiting to watch this garbage to help you make up your mind, don’t bother. If a 30 minute commercial will help you decide, then you have more problems than 30 minutes will solve.
Obama will sink this country if elected, simple as that.
185. Samantha | 10.29.08
We NEED a president like Obama. If we have McCain come in, it will be another 4 years of George Bush and we all know how great he has been for the country. GWBush Jr, has managed to single handedly destroy the global economy, cause grave problems with global economy, basically he is a destroyer, everything he touches turns to garbage.
If America wants to be respected in the world again, we need Obama. Please vote sensibly, McCain is not the sensible way to go and god forbid if Sarah Palin comes in as President…we may as well just die.
186. Buitrago | 10.29.08
Please stop being so hateful towards Obama. He is a man of integrity. He truly believes in his heart that he will help our country as do I. We need a new generation of leaders and Obama is the right person to take that step. I’m hearing talks that Palin might run in 2012 if McCain loses. She would be a new generation leader, however, she isn’t even on the same building with Obama in respect to abilities and readiness!
I don’t understand why McCain supporters have to show so much hatred. Obama is NOT about hate, he’s not about Communism/Socialism, he’s not about Stealing from the Rich, he’s not about wiping Israel out of this Earth. Don’t fall for the propaganda people.
Watch this program tonight with open-mindedness and please realize that Obama is not about all the I just mentioned. Get rid of your hatred and negative emotions that McCain and Palin have implanted on you.
If Obama wins, this country will not DIE. On the contrary, we will grow back to being a respected super-power.
I hope you all get something positive out of tonight’s program. Take care all.

If you haven’t made up your mind already, you probably haven’t been paying attention the past year.
The question comes down to whether or not you think we should go down a path that has been roundly rejected by voters since 1968.
Make no mistake, Barrack Obama may look young, even a bit athletic, but his politics are very old school and wrong for the U.S.
188. Don S | 10.29.08

The media has been quite biased and even when they have proof that voters need, they choose not to disclose it by request of their source. The only thing missing from these articles is the money trail that the source was offered considerable funds by the Obama campaign to prevent the video from ever airing. The times can’t leak who the source is or investigate them due to their own protective clause. Who those who have seen this clip. Shame on you for not sharing. I would choose to share it regardless of the monetary consequences. It really is coming down to money.

So Obama buys a 30 minute infomercial, wins the Presidency and suddenly all the unwitting people that voted for him are now part of his Markist plan to turn America into a socialism… just like his puppetmasters on the far far left want.
Want all you Obama worshipers to remember these coming days after it’s all over and you are left with nothing but a government that controls every aspect of who and what you do. Look into the “Fairness Doctrine” look into the Obama facts and voting records, he always promises this, and then does that. Take your money and your rights.
This is becoming a dangerous time if he get elected, terrorists will attack us because he doesn’t have the stomach to be tough, the economy will fall further into a hole because it is being taxed so hard no growth can happen. Disarm and take away funding from our military just like he said he would to start with.

After 8 years of two stimulas packages, a war and a financial crisis, I think it’s time for change. I see a lot of talk on socialism, you should not be so afraid of it, more than likely your child goes to a school payed for by socialism. Also socialized medicine is cheaper and covers more people. Ours is mostly private and happens to be the most expensive in the world which covers less people than any other industrialized nation. U.S. cost is 16% of GDP covering around 80% of us. Tawain’s socialist program covers everyone has better care and costs about 7% of GDP. Hmm. A radical socialistic health system that costs half as much as ours, is rated higher quality and covers more people. Germany, Canada, England, France, Japan and Germany, just to name a few, covers everyone for less money and better service. Yes, that is socialism. For Health Care it works. Our private system happens to be rated one of the worst, below Cuba.

Use your brains, people. If anyone is trying to “buy” your vote, its the Republicans who have no new ideas, no soul, and are completely out of touch with current events, but keep parroting “taxestaxestaxes” because they have nothing, (NOTHING!!) else to say or offer the world.

I would rather listen to a smart intelligent person versus a racist bigot such as the McCain/Palin ticket. It wasn’t the people of color who put this economy in the tank…last I recall it was the white folks. In reference to taxes, most people commenting on this website do not even make enough to worry about being taxed. Just ignorant, racist rural redneck…just the kind of folks the republican ticket caters to. In closing, there is a demographic shift happening in America. The mainstream was so worried about black folks getting a head in this country, they forgot about all the other persons of color who have come over here and brought you out. Some day we will have an Arab/Asian and/or Mexican american running for president… so whether its Obama or not the USA will have a president of color in the near future…you open the gates to this country and welcomed everyone but black folks so deal with it.
Also, as I think about the Republican Party does nothing but creat racial and econmic divide. I know because most of the jobs I have had in the last eight years have been outsourced. Get over WF.

aloha: You can afford those things because of those American service men and women relieving your government of the burden of having to spend *billions* on defense to keep you safe from the Russians.
It’s easy to spend freely on special programs when you allow others to defend you. Not so much when you carry the lion’s share of the burden for defending dozens of other countries from aggression including your own.

I know what socialism is! I know the meaning of a lot of those words that seem so “big” to you,and I’m not stupid.I know the $700 billion dollar bail-out is a form of socialism complete with government ownership in banks.I know what it means to be a productive member of society unlike those that have recieved the big bucks by using the publics money to “create” wealth for themselves while in reality providing no service or tangible goods. In others words they made money by sustaining an illusion of doing something that produced a profit. After running their institutions in the ground they went to the US Govt. for a little good old-fashioned re-distribution of wealth, and after a lot of phony bravado from all the “free-market” “fiscal conservatives” got exactly what they ask for.
If you want to call it socialism that’s fine, but a short course in American history might do you a little good and bring things into prospective.
FDR did a lot that was considered socialist and is what has been responsible for the America’s prosperity for the last 75 years.

It’s great to see more unbiased political coverage. I just can’t wait for Obama to fall flat as President as the media watches dumbstruck, wondering what happened to the savior that it supported for office. But I’m not voting for him because I don’t want to see how he could damage democracy and my right to the pursuit of happiness. Only freedom, including economic freedom can protect that right. Happiness is something I should earn, not something that Obama should take from someone else to give to me, in which case I couldn’t really appreciate it anyway.
At least the Obama campaign is paying for tonight’s spot rather than have free positive news coverage- wait, that will happen anyway.
203. rynhere | 10.29.08
wow. So much chatter about socialism. I find it interesting that socialism is being described in terms of tax policy. Perhaps I’m too stupid, but whether or not Halliburton pay 3% or 4% on their net income, how does either of those percentages equate to socialism versus democracy? If Halliburton is taxed 4% and the extra tax funds go to no-child-left-further-behind, how does that become socialism? Isn’t that how it works today with the 3% that Halliburton is already paying?
Back to the question, whether my taxes go up or down or whether GM’s goes up or down, how does tax policy get equated to socialism versus democracy? Just because Rush Limbaugh can’t see the distinction between those two very different topics, doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t know that there’s a difference. No one on the campaign trail today is talking about turning the US into a largely dead, type of government that was popular during the cold-war era.

Hey Chris,
You think your hurting now? Let’s seriously look at what Obama is proposing. Tax increases for businesses and tax cuts for the middle class. How many middle class people are generating jobs right now? What do you think is going to happen to the unemployment rate when businesses can no longer afford to employ as many people? Oh yeah, and now Obama is proposing an increase to $9.50 in the minimum wage by 2011. Sound good? Somehow I have to believe this appeals to you (by the way, are the fries done yet). How many mor jobs will be lost because emploters just can’t carry as many employees with their new taxes and mandatory wage increases.
I think it was “lola” (comment #18) that said it best. You certainly are going to “get what you deserve”.

It’s interesting to see how many people feel so strongly about their candidate…so much so that they post hateful comments about the opponent…let me just pick a few words:
“If he is elected it will be on you not me!!
Maybe all you Hussein lovers can attend the hate church with him too. What a racist he is!”
Hmmm, emphasis (twice) of the middle name “Hussein”…and Obama’s the racist? Don’t think we don’t know what you are, but don’t try to use a rational argument to legitimize your viewpoint.
I remember saying the same thing for Bush in 04. He’s not my president. I didn’t vote for him. But that was after 4 years in the WH of bungling, warmongering, generally inept leadership. I mean, for God’s sake, all you had to do was listen to the man speak.
I never wanted an Average Joe in office, but that’s what we’ve had for the last 8 years. Look at what it has done to our nation: 2 Wars, An International Community That Looks On Us With Scorn, An Overstretched Military, An Economy in the Crapper.
I honestly don’t believe McCain will do anything to bring back the real spirit of America. I think he’s old, washed up and cannot make up his mind on who he wants to be. Right now, it seems like **** say anything to win this election - and that mainly involves smearing his opponent. Especially the “socialist” tagline - WHAT A FARCE! After McCain’s voting 90% of the time with Bush HELPED to institute EXTREME DEREGULATION that ENABLED the crisis.
Like the pot calling the kettle black. Here’s a hint, America - we work in a system called CAPITALISM. It MUST be regulated because the governing principle, the MAIN MOTIVATOR in capitalism is GREED (the concept of MORE MORE MORE). Not a judgment call - this is the way it is.
Don’t buy into the socialist argument - their tax plans aren’t that different, and McCain has passed more damaging legislation in the name of far-right policies that eventually break down and have to be rescued by socialist policies. But really, it’s not even socialist, because we the American people didn’t bail out the American people, we bailed out executives. They had nothing to lose. Is that fiscally conservative?

The Liberation Theology, anti-semitism, and anti-Americanism of Jeremiah Wright is of a piece with Obama’s “spread the wealth” comment to Joe the Plumber. Wright’s theological (?) wanderings are simply an effort to wrap communism in the cloak of religion. Spreading the wealth around is a euphemism for confiscating from those who work hard and earn wealth and giving it to those who don’t, which according to Karl Marx is communism: “from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs;” Rashid Khalidi, Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, terrorists and terrorist sympathizers, all of whom have worked with Obama, or been praised by him, each a Communist opposed to the concept of freedom and liberty and the United States. Then, Obama himself has backtracked on his “public funding” commitment for this campaign, he is backtracking on the level at which our taxes will be raised, he pretends that not renewing tax cuts is NOT a tax increase, he favors the death and dismemberment of babies in the womb, and those who are born alive after a botched abortion, and refers to unwanted children as “punishment.” He has taken more money than any other politician from the organizations that created the current economic crisis: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He opposes any recognition of the right of the individual protected by the 2d Amendment, and he insists that the Supreme Court should set aside the law and the Constitution when they are overcome with sympathy, and the Court should do more to assist the redistributive efforts of socialists and communists. Open your eyes, America. The candidate Obama will be a detriment to this nation. He will decimate our military. He will defund our national security apparatus. He will capitulate to our adversaries and he will appease our enemies.

Ok, for one… McCain has to use negative campaigning because of the losing position he is in. He needs to convince voters that aren’t sure that they can’t trust Obama because there is too much hype. As for post 54… you and your Pastor as Christians should be more conservative shouldn’t you? Personally I am supporting a candidate who is pro-life, and a canidate that has an adopted child. An early post: “Please God, don’t let the government take control of my money!! ::prays::”
Um, where you been dude, under a rock? Might be time to pay attention, before the six pack…
So many folks are whining about the government taking their money—you all are a joke, or you’ve never paid taxes before. The reality isn’t that the government is going to take your money, it already does and has—got $700 billion?. The question is; do you value invading foreign sovereign nations to kill thousands upon thousands of innocent civilians to obtain oil, or would you rather spend $10 billion a month rebuilding schools, highways—infrastructure, providing healthcare for the uninsured, creating alternatives to fossil fuels—creating jobs here in America. It’s simply where you place your values.
Anybody complain about the Bush redistribution of wealth from the poor to the wealthy? Of course not Then Rove didn’t want you to care, and you didn’t—nice job. So why are you in such an uproar now that Obama want’s to return to the taxes you had before Bush, except he’s going to cut taxes for poor individuals? Maybe it’s to much for your limited education to handle, just grab another beer and cheer for Sarah…. the woman who spent $150,000.00 for clothing in a month — She’s just like you and me…
Anyway, Given Obama’s ability to address issues in the past by being mature, reflective, intelligent, insightful, we can only hope he will be laying out a concise appraisal of the situation at hand and lay out a detailed plan to move forward.

All those saints who control companies… Those poor dears… It’s very naive to think that most people are employed by small businesses and even more naive to think that the people who control small companies (<100) are hurting in any way. I personally had an experience where a former employer called everyone into a conference to explain how tough times are only to discover later that day (accidentally) that each of the partners took home a $500k bonus that same day. Those people were not even bad employers, just used to selfish greed being unchecked. What harm would it have done to keep $450k and pay someone that made you rich their lousy salary for another year? All those saints need to enjoy their wealth, but greed is not how the U.S. was founded and is not sustainable. I believe people are not worthless stepping stones that I climb over to get richer. I feel very alone sometimes…

It’s complete insanity to think Obama is better for the country. I’m from Illinois and I can tell you that he changed his mind about how far down tax increases should go many times. What he will do for us that is simply cause higher taxes. Those taxes will come back to haunt Joe 6pack in the form of higher prices. The real issue is this…. If you think businesses are leaving America for cheaper labor and less taxes now….. wait till Obama increases their taxes again. You really ought to invest in companies that ship overseas.
Or at least you should learn spanish cause that’s where you’re present employer will be with an Obama presidency.

Socialism is as defined by an encyclopedia “selective nationalization of key national industries in mixed economies combined with tax-funded welfare programs.” If that is too difficult for you to understand here are some examples:
Taxation
Social Security
Medicare
Medicaid
Earned Income Tax Credit
Government Bank Bailouts
I thought Christians believed in helping people less fortunate than themselves . . . We can’t have capitalism without social programs, a modern society like that does not exist.

I DO happen to live in a country whose leader wants to convert it into “socialism”, no matter that a December referendum over it gave “NO” as a result.
And yes, guess what, our primary health care is NOT quick and efficent, many times you have to bring your own medicines and supplies, as the hospitals don’t have them. Yes, some students can afford overprized iPhones and MacBooks, mostly if your parents are with “the revolution”. If not, many children can’t afford go to the school, and you see them on traffic lights begging money. Our power-grids DO fail, moreover since the main electric company was nationalized and yes, we had a big flood in 1999, and they are still trying to rebuild many parts of that state, including some roads. The US had offered help in rebuilding roads, but the (venezuelan) president told them that we did not need their aid.
Oh, by the way. Our president LOVES to talk to the nation. Only that he orders all the TV channels and radio station to transmit his speeches (called here a “cadena” or chain), which can last many hours.
Yes, I know about “socialism”.

If B.O. is winning so big why would he waste all that wonderful Democrat money to continue to convince? I am sickened by all the money that is being spent for this hoopla, do your own digging, do not depend on the mainstream media to lead you around on their leash. Instead of being a TV trash sponge, read a book. There are plenty of good books to read, why not try the Bible?
225. Phil | 10.29.08
Obama sure leans to the left no doubt about it. I don’t like lefties but I hate Republican hawks who make false promises to be more fiscally responsible with my tax money and then they go on a spending spree and run up the biggest budget deficit in history.
If I had to choose between a quazi socialist or a Bush replica who will irresponsibly tax less and spend more = budget deficit, then I will take the leftie.
The Republicans have had their chance and they blew it badly.
I am a Republican and I will not be voting Republican because:
1/ They have demonstrated immense fiscal irresponsibility.
2/ They cannot be trusted not to start another pointless expensive war.
3/ Sarah Pailin is not fit for executive office.
4/ Social conservatism is out of touch with mainstream America.
5/ There are still some Neo-con hawks lurking around Washington and the party has not fully rid itself of the scourge of these vermin.
Both sides of politics should agree that Obama is not just a pop icon, he is an incredibly unique inspirational man and this is his time. Everything I have seen of him so far tells me that this is the first time I should vote Democrat. I will be very disappointed if he does not live up to my high expectation but somehow I think he will exceed all of our wildest hopes and dreams.

If he is going to have validators, let’s see some who have known him over time, Like Rev. Wright and Mr. Ayers, a few ACORN directors, etc., not just his most recent friendships like Mr. Powell. Why is he running fast and furiously away from those who brought him to these lofty heights? Why doesn’t his fuzzy old funny Uncle Rev. get to share his 1/2 hour of glory?
Will we see a contributors list of some $200 million just under the $200 anonymous threshold, that are paying for this ad?
228. John | 10.29.08
Perhaps the infomercial will be interrupted with breaking news, like Obama’s speech that the LA Times is holding revealed.
How can anyone trust Barak?
Who is associated with Bill Ayers, Reverend Wright, Rasheed Khalidi, Tony Rezco, etc. yet knows NOTHING about any of them.
Who the leaders of Iran, Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba, and others countries which want to destroy the US are hoping will win.
Who thinks Iran is a tiny country and not a serious threat.
Who told tiny Georgia to restrain themselves after the giant Russian bear attacked.
Who thought the surge failed.
Who doesn’t realize that taxing corporations will push jobs overseas (to the countries that hate us)
Whos idea of improving our situation with oil is drilling in the off shore regions where there is no oil and ensuring our tires are properly inflated
Who proposed the exact same things that FDR did, which made the Great Depression last 10 years until WWII caused an economic boom (we weren’t in the war yet, but our country was supplying it & getting all the $).
“From each according to his ability, to each according to his need” - Barak Obama (OK, Karl Marx, but Obama might as well have said it)
229. Rich | 10.29.08
It seems like most don’t understand socialism. The sad part is, we already have quite a few aspects of our gov’t that are socialist, and both candidates will do more to further the role that socialism plays in government.
An Obama presidency won’t kill us. He may be what we need at a time like this: a little hope. However, we’re doomed if we do, doomed if we don’t. Both candidates’ policies are going to sink us further in the hole. I guess socialist policies are the hip thing these days.

“Thankfully tonight at 8 p.m. (EDT) Barack Obama will be on every TV channel there is. And for a full 30 minutes.”
Who’s “thankful”? Nonsense!!! I’m not gonna watch that. Ugghh! Nasty stuff. I’d rather clean all the urinals in Grand Central Station with my tongue or chew on broken shards of glass than watch his lie-o-mercial.
231. Janet | 10.29.08
OMG! I’m so glad I won’t HAVE to watch this infomercial this evening! I have other plans! Propaganda sublime! Obama will certainly take this country under, IF he is elected by purchased votes, ACORN’s dishonesty, and now asking people to take off work (now that’s a new answer to help the economy!) Is this what our country has come to?
People! Wake UP! He and all his associates are not what we need! Go ahead, play Russian roulette with our country!
232. Sean | 10.29.08
We aren’t going Socialist people, if you can give me some reasons why you think we are heading into Socialism…maybe I’ll listen, but when you cry about that which you know nothing about, you make your point laughable.
233. commonThinker | 10.29.08
all those in favor of socialism, aye. But those can define socialism, well um… not many. they just see it as a negative word. think before you speak, write, or work. This whole campaign is about leveling the playing field. We have seen how this idea of “trickle down economics,” has had it’s chance and isn’t working for the majority, and by the majority i mean about 95% of the nation. Just look at the history. There has been a large developing, a vary obvious large gap, between rich and poor in this nation. Unfortunately, not many people want to admit that.
234. Susie | 10.29.08
Everyone that is voting for McCain probably voted for Bush. Your bad judgement put us into 8 terrible years, so why on earth do you think that by voting for McCain, you are making the right decision. You screwed up twice, so please don’t let it happen again.
235. Sean | 10.29.08
OMG Obama hangs out with college professors. He is a terrorist for knowing Edward Said, Rashid Khalidi, and Bill Ayers. Clearly, we can’t trust this man with the presidency.
237. Brock | 10.29.08
1. Obama’s not a socialist
2. Public trash collection and public education are socialist ideas.
3. Spending new money, yes Barack will, but he will cut much of the older spending first to fund these updated programs. Also the tax cuts that will be stopped for big companies will easily fund America into a new period of expansion.
4. How can McCain change America if he won’t EVER allow new spending by congress, and cut taxes for everyone?
People don’t seem to understand… The government needs money to operate! Higher taxes can be a good thing, and this is from an 18 year old freshman college student with little more than pennies to his name.

Socialism? Look Capitalism in it’s extreme unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and creates an unequal society (like now). That gross imbalance has shown to corrupt already powerful people (ie. AIG, Enron, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers etc. And now to save the entire world from economic melt down we needed to sprinkle a little Socialism on the problem (how ironic), a little welfare (bail out) to the tune of trillions. Oh yeah we’ll play that ‘Socialism Card’ when it’s needed for the rich and powerful to win but hold it if it may benefit the not so rich (under 250G a year). Vote Obama! We then will achieve the smart balance needed in the White House. Can’t wait to check him out tonight!
240. Alan | 10.29.08
Funny stuff (and necessary). A proverbial breath of fresh air in the otherwise fetid miasma of false hope, fear and punditry that makes up contemporary American popular political discourse.
241. JT | 10.29.08
Obama is a socialist? Are you kidding me? After the Republicans expanded the size of the federal government more than at any time since either the New Deal or LBJ’s Great Society? After Cheney and Bush declared that the president was all-powerful? After the national republican party decided that interference in personal family matters was just swell (Terry Schaivo)? After the federal government, led by the Bush administration, just nationalized a large chunk of our economy? What a joke. Even if Obama is as much of a liberal as everyone says (and if you’ve been paying attention you know he’s a pragmatic centrist) he still couldn’t match the real socialism of the last eight years.
243. Matt | 10.29.08
To Scott: Comment 37.
You’re willing to pay a one way ticket to a socialist country? I will choose one of the European countries who are doing very well( Scandinavian countries). They consistently rank in the top ten countries to live in, low crime rates, great quality of life….Yeah,Socialism is real bad, read a book about it or google it before you make judgments about it!!!
244. Mel | 10.29.08
Newsflash - Congress already voted to redistribute our wealth, it’s called the bailout and nationalization of our banks. Both McCain and Obama voted for that. This is facism, not socialism. At least with socialism, the middle class would be doing well with the money redistributed form the wealthy. But that’s not the case - our government has taken our money, which means the middle class will pay higher taxes - there’s no way around it - and has given it to the wealthy and to corporations. Facism, here and now.
Do people really think that by saying “share the wealth” Obabma was talking about anything but non-regressive taxes? It’s like we’re a nation of idiots.
245. D. Scusted | 10.29.08

So much hate and so much fear in the voices of those who have posted here. What has happened to us? Is this who we are? Fearful, hateful people who distrust and discount anyone who disagrees with our own point of view?
The truth is Obama/McCain isn’t the issue. Both men are honorable, intelligent leaders who can navigate us through the next 4 years. The issue is the division and distrust that separates us. We are failing as a nation because we are not united as a people, but divided, and completely unwilling to bend or accommodate anyone who has an opinion that differs from our own. Is this who we are?
247. Dan A | 10.29.08
I’d rather have the risky one one step away rathere than in the office.
You might find this interesting. First off I’d never vote for a politician based on what they promise, some will say anything. I vote base on what they have done as that is an indicator of what they really will do.
That being said here is a link that Barack Obama had on a commercial about his tax cut verses John McCain’s. So I’m sure it is either fair or skewed toward Obama. You fill in 3 dropdown boxes and it will calculate your estimated savings under both plans. Remember to read everything not just what is highlighted. It just highlights savings under Obama even though my savings under McCain are higher and I’m not wealthy. Even when Obama’s are better it isn’t by much.
248. SP | 10.29.08
Yeah, and he’s going to sing all his greatest hits, such as “If I were A Rich Man”, and “If I had a Million Dollars” , and who could forget, “Money for Nothing (and your chicks for free)”. Oh, and I almost forgot , the great cover, “Opportunities” (Let’s Make Lots of Money), and last, I hear he will do a new rendition of “Money, Money, Money”, the old ABBA song from their album Arrival (1976). That’s it, should be quite a show, unless the Material Girl herself shows up and sings “Like a Virgin”.
249. PastorB | 10.29.08
For those reading these comments, let me appeal to your heads and your hearts. If a pastor or an advertisement is trying to get you to vote out of fear, please be skeptical. Your vote should be because you actually want someone to lead, because you think he or she can do a good job, and not because you are afraid of the other person.
Both campaigns have appealed to fear at various points this season; neither campaign has been perfect. At the same time, neither man is the Anti-Christ (which I have heard thrown around) and both have brains. Each candidate makes decisions based on his or her own past experience and the advice of those they choose.
One of the most beautiful freedoms we have here in the US is choice. If you don’t want to watch the show tonight, don’t. If you want to vote for one person as opposed to another, do that. But please stop the insults and the mudslinging. We’re supposed to be a country of freedoms; don’t try force your opinion down another person’s throat — just as you don’t really want them to force their opinions down yours.
250. lorax2 | 10.29.08
Interesting. The sarcasm in the article attracted equally sarcastic comments. I have a hard time telling who is serious. Like the socialism comments. If socialism means the government owns or controls business entities, like banks and insurance companies - this is what the Bush Bailout does. And what McCain supports. If socialism means redistribution of the wealth, then that is what has been happening the past eight years, the Bush tax cuts go to the wealthiest top five percent. The oil industry which has made the most profits in history has been given subsidies and tax breaks. The past eight years has seen a transfer of wealth from ordinary citizens to the already rich and powerful. This is the Bush and McCain agenda. You throw around unsubstantiated claims of “socialism.” But I think its here for everyone to see that we have witnessed the biggest transfer of wealth in history - the Great U.S. Treasury Bank Robbery - the Bush Bailout. If just pointing out the fact that the fat cats are robbing us blind is socialism - then I must be a socialist.

Obama’s “mega dollars” to buy “millions of dollars” in RTVP ads is now approaching $1,000,000,000.00 One Billions Dollars…Most ever spent in USA history to capture our Presidency…where does it all come from? BO’s group wants you to think it’s all from “little old $25. tips” from Mr.& Mrs.Public …while ISPs have traced monies from Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Middle East, China, et al.,etc.
Gore got into trouble in past election taking monies from China via Monks in LA…BO’s funding is a scandal yet to unfold.
No, BO info-commercials to help him purchase our “White House” is degrading and unacceptable, our “White House” is not for sale to the highest bidder.

This comment stream, as with so many others, would benefit from a reminder that “you can have opinions about everything except the facts.”
Fact 1) All taxation and government spending is redistribution of wealth. It is redistributed from direct productivity (earners) to indirect productivity (the infrastructure that supports and defends those earners - roads, defense, educations etc.)
Fact 2) Since income tax was introduced, the wealthy have always paid more, because they earn more. They paid more under Reagan than they would under Obama. They paid more under Nixon than they did under Clinton.
Fact 3) Democratic tax and economic policies have consistently led to higher incomes at every income level than Republican tax and economic policies - see Bartels’ “Unequal Democracy” for the numbers.
Fact 4) If socialism is defined as redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor, then the US is now, and has been for decades, the biggest Socialist Republic of all. We have a bigger Federal government, higher government spending and more government payroll (both to individuals and corporations) than any country on earth. All of this has increased under Bush.
The McCain and Obama approaches to taxation and government spending are essentially similar. Rich people might find Obama’s plan less fair, but then the record clearly shows that their incomes will rise along with everyone else’s, so it’ll be a wash for them, and a win for everyone else. Sounds OK to me.
If you don’t like this idea of “socialism” then you are way outside the mainstream and should have voted for Ron Paul earlier this year instead of Old Grumpy Pants.
253. Ric | 10.29.08
Even the WaPo ran an article on the real effects of Obama’s tax plan. It’s bad for the country, but yes those of you who feel that you should get something for nothing, will, in some form, but that will only lead to higher taxes on most working people down the road. Government spending is out of control, and the Democrats have been as much a part of that as Republicans. We need to tell our lawmakers to work for America, rather than themselves, stop the ridiculous spending and show some restraint, rather than fuel this class warfare to keep the focus off of the real problems in government.

capitalism is an economic theory about how people exchange money.
capitalism is not a theory about how to shift national wealth from all people to a few.
when captialism does that there is no level playing field, no democracy and people suffer.
when a people see that 95% of their national wealth is in the hands of 5% of the population, that their legislative representatives are bought and sold at like slaves at an auction (see $700 billion ranson and the shennanigans in New York City where three billionnaires decided how the NY City Charter should be revised so one of them can run for a third term and now Stevens in Alaska getting caught with his hand in the till), reversing the non-democratic wrongly used term capitalism to redistribute the nation’s wealth from many to a few is justified, correct, moral, good for democracy and good economics.
why is palin’s claim of taking money from oil companies in her state and giving it back to the people any different from Obama’s program? did she not redistributed the wealth of oil companies to gain votes? i see no difference except Obama wants to do it nationally so every American can take back a piece of America.
there is a clear choice for the first time in many between the candidates.
one wants America to return to its ideals and the other wants to continue the destruction of American democracy. the hope is that the undecideds can make the correct choice.

So I’ve been following this election pretty closely. But this whole socialism thing is killing me.
You all DO know that socialism is NOT communism right? Socialism is not some sort of polite politically correct way of saying marxism.
I’m sure most of you have been unemployed at some point in the past.. and colelcted unemployment… guess what? that’s socialism. socialism is about societal responsibility.
Instead of an “It’s all about me” mentality like pure capitalism, western socialism is more about “It’s all about me, but if everyone around me fails, then I’m not going to get very far, so let’s help everyone win”. It’s a combo deal. Best of both worlds so to speak
As someone else mentioned.. none of you think twice about police, fire, transportation, or any other federally/state funded agencies designed to make your life easier and help everyone in the long term. Why are you all so against it? Because it will cost you an extra 100 bucks a year in taxes?
I tell ya… I dont’ know what a private medical plan costs, being from a socialist canada with public healthcare, but I’m willing to pay 100 bucks in taxes for it because i’m sure a private plan that is less comprehensive probably costs a lot more.
So what’s wrong with helping other people out? There will come a time when you need the help too.

It is so apparent that the RED STATES (aka: Jesusland) are intent on bringing down this great nation however they can. their uneducated banter is like cancer, it’s spreads through and taints everything it touches. Dont they see how unAmerican it is to be so divisive. They all deserve to have their voting rights revoked after what thier vote did for us in the last 8 years.
Why we even allow these ignorant fools vote is beyond me.
At least make them take a politics/sociology course before they can EARN their voting rights back.
260. Eric | 10.29.08
It’s not “redistributing the wealth”, but “fair taxation” as it was before G.W. Bush was in office. McCain’s financial base are the same folks that persuaded Bush to do the senseless things that he did. Think about it: Obama is free from the lobby, with his campaign financed completely by the people with hope. Not financed by greed and fear.
If Social Security and Medicare are “socialist”, why don’t the fear-mongering republicans just eliminate this wasteful spending? Oh, that’s right, they *are* planning on eliminating these!
261. UNBAMA | 10.29.08
It is unbelievable the people that blame Bush for everything that is happening in today’s economy and environment. The President is only one of how many votes to pass legislation, good or bad. Do you not realize this? Unbama ads say that McCain voted with Bush 86% of the time, look at the rest of congress and see how they voted. Unbama didn’t even show up to vote 86% of the time! The McCain camp is not running a negative ad campaign, they are trying to get the truth out! Check Obama’s record, it speaks for itself as to how little this guy actually has done while in office. John McCain - 473 bills authored & 811 bills co-sponsored. Barrack Obama -67 bills authored or co-sponsored. that is just one fact that is available on government websites. OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE!!!

I know there are families out there struggling, but it really disappoints me to see people in the checkout line buying beer and lottery tickets with cash and then handing the cashier food stamps/EBT cards/etc. to pay for the food, and then driving away in a Lexus. It also disappoints me when I read stories of corporate corruption and wealthy financial managers trying to cheat the system.
A perfectly socialistic society can not exist, because man is greedy. The poor want government to do more for them, the wealthy want government to take less from them. I don’t think either candidate has an answer that’s going to satisfy everyone.
I’m not wealthy by any measure, but I’ve worked very hard for all that I have. Because of this, I don’t think I can vote for someone who’s in favor of “redistributing the wealth”.
264. shawnshine | 10.29.08
Barack Obama needs 30 minutes to try to explain to the American public what he hasn’t been able to explain in the longest running Presidential Campaign in history? Wow. Maybe he should use his time to explain why he won’t let the public see his birth certificate? Why he won’t let his poor grandmother speak to the media about his youth? Why he keeps back pedaling and saying that what he wrote in his book about wanting to be influenced by Marxists, Socialists and social Outcasts was not what he “meant” to say. Come on. The guy has had his chance. If you watch this soap opera tonight, make sure your BS detector is turned on.
265. What’s up, Doc? | 10.29.08
You are right, Doc. Many of us are stupid. You are wrong, however, that the stupid ones are voting for Obama. It is the person that understands truth rather than being led by propaganda… I point to the many comments above as proof.
Don’t be stupid, Doc. Be a thinker. Be a reader. Search for the truth, and the truth will set you free.

McCain amazes me. It cracks me up when someone making $40,000 a year thinks they will be better off with him as president. He will continue to reward the huge corporations and the wealthy just like every previous Republican.
And Sara…. When her own campaign calls her a “whack job” and “diva” she obviously has some issues. What if there was a video of Obama and his minister preaching to protect him from the “witches” like there is of Sara? That would be the end of his politcal career but for Sara it is acceptable. All true Americans want there state to secede from the U.S. like Sara wants Alaska to do. If you want the current economic nightmare to continue and more wars, just vote for McCain. His nickname isnt McNasty for no reason.

We can’t let one party be in control of everything the government has the power to do, that is the mistake the Nazis and the Marxists waited for in Germany in the 1920s and in Russia in 1917. No totalitarianism is a good thing for the people and we are about to find that out. Hopefully we will have an escape from this evil in four years, but that depends on how many people wake up to just how terrible this is between now and then. Don’t be surprised if these people want to suspend The Constitution after they assume power. Just remember you allowed it to happen.

Someone says Obama will “sink” this country if elected. First, the country is already sunk, and McCain will only bury it further “my friend”. I feel sorry for Obama considering the task that lies ahead for him, even with the entirely Democratic government he will be in charge of. Second, his so called “infomercial” is not a desperation attempt, as Obama is going to win this election by a landslide. He is simply wielding the awesome power given to him by millions of Americans who have donated to his campaign and want him to advertise with that money. These are Americans, by the way who are not disgusting little closet racists - who cares that his middle name is Hussein? Time to grow up America. If by some unbelievable twist McCain is elected I will immediately research and invest in the makers of Prozac and similar drugs as the number of prescriptions for anti-depressants will undoubtedly skyrocket for years to come.

What do voters want? People seem to complain about lack of information *and* complain about Obama taking out a half hour infomercial to talk about his policies in the same breath. Both candidates have reams of information about their policies on their websites. Yet in past elections, the politicians who did talk extensively about details during stump speeches got crushed by the public for being “out of touch policy wonks” and not talking accessibly.
Take some responsibility yourselves for studying the candidate’s platforms. They are throwing huge amounts of information out there; it is the electorate’s responsibility to take the trouble to learn about it. Stop whining.

I never said I consider Germany a perfect place to dwell. My point is that “socialism”, or more precisely a liberal market economy, is superiour to the GOP´s Social Darwinism when it comes down to giving people more freedom to act, work hard and be themselves.
I observe how especially african american soldiers decide to stay after their service abroad… imagine, they prefer to settle down in the former headquarter of Nazism instead of going home. How awful must their live be in the States? My Guess: Social Darwinism. Germany has been down this road. It never ends well.
Concerning World War Two: Don´t be such a smarta.. My grandfather fought the Nazis, too.
The US succeeded in Europe because the rest of Hitler´s army and secret police decided against fighting a guerilla war, they considered it unhonorable.
And you guy´s didn´t rebuild Germany out of kindness, you did it because you needed an ally against the communists. And guess who is running the EU and is keeping it on your side? The US army under General Petreus now has adopted all the tactics we have proposed in the first place. Listen to a friend, just once in a while. You need us the same way we need you. Everything is connected. That´s why I definitly won´t stay “off the internet”.

125. Jenn - I distrust anybody who says they are independent and form their own conclusions and then proceed to give voting advice. You are no exception.
First you say that the media is pro-Obama and then you go on to say that is because it is controlled by the government. Really? The republicans do not want one of their own in the white house?
Your use of Obama’s middle name isn’t helping your cause to look like someone wise either.
To end, i wonder who pays trolls like you to post the rubbish that you do? Is this the reason why McCain has no money left for proper ads?

“The government needs money to operate! Higher taxes can be a good thing, and this is from an 18 year old freshman college student with little more than pennies to his name.”
Talk about naive! Try making some of your own money before you advocate spending mine. The way some of you kids talk about government, it is like a magical wishing well where we just throw money in and things are instantly better. Hate to tell you but good governments don’t fund expansion, they allow individuals to create wealth for expansion.

Obama may be smart but there are a whole lot of DUMB Americans getting ready to vote for him.
Then when their freedoms are lost and they pay taxes so people who don’t pay taxes can get refund checks then they will know they’ve been had big time!
Obama is the classic narcissist. I spotted him a few weeks into the primary. How do I know? I married someone with the same persuasive, eloquent way of manipulating everyone. Once the narcissist is in control, they do what they want not what they told you to hook you in.

What’s up with all the Socialist = Obama stuff?
Fact: It’s the GOP who created the current financial mess and then decided to “socialize” the financial industry by investing in it rather then letting it fail as one would do in a free market. (And that’s just the most obvious act of socialism done over the last 8 years).
Fact: Under Sara Palin… Alaska taxes the oil companies… takes that tax money and writes ~$2000 checks to each Alaskan… which is far more socialist then Obama cutting taxes on the middle class (which I honestly don’t know how this is socialist… it’s just giving a break were it will do the most good).
Quick economics lesson… more people have more money the better the economy. Over the last eight years more money has been consolidated to a fewer people, thus the flow of money freezes since most consumers must now stop consuming. So… if more money is in the hand of more people then they buy more stuff, create more demand for goods, which creates more jobs and more opportunity for companies large and small. Obama has it right and the last eight years have shown that the Bush/McCain plan has failed.
280. nathan | 10.29.08
McCain’s campaign is out of money! What do you think would happen if he were president and his (from the debate I quote) “we can do it all” mentality bankrupts the nation because he doesn’t admit you have to create revenue to spend on the fixes this country needs. Obama’s plan is not Socialism! It’s simply removing the Bush tax cuts that Bush was giving to his friends at the top while the rest of us that make this country go day-to-day did all the heavy lifting. Obama will restore the tax percentages back to the Clinton years in which the country was thriving, jobs were being created and the country had a surplus. McCain is not realistic to the fact the country can’t continue to spend on multiple wars, have any sort of domestic policies in place to help its citizens and find energy alternatives if you don’t tax somebody. I think Chris Matthews said it best last night… “Would you rather raise taxes a little or borrow more money from China?”

Dear Passionate Obama voters,
Congratulations for wanting to improve your country and shame on you for your failure to understand the fundamental value of freedom for which millions of people have died for and which is the cornerstone of this nation. There is no greater failure as an American to support a President who intends to undermine the US Constitution and our Bill of Rights. People who hate racism, bigotry and war have been fighting these corrupt politicians like Obama (republicans and democrats alike) for decades ever since the great traitor FDR destroyed the Republic. We are now a nation of debtors and serfs working for the world banking elite. The corporations run our government and if you think Obama will challenge them you’re more frightening than Obama himself. Do yourself, your family, your heritage and your nation a favor. Study the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Then decide what is more important: Freedom or Slavery. First they divided us then they conquered us. Wake up, turn OFF your TV and read something, anything.

I keep hearing about the big mess the current President has gotten us into. I think the “balance of power” in our government means the Democratically controlled congress is equally to blame for this mess. Neither candidate is much help as a “law maker.” What makes them think the title of “President” will improve their performance.

You die-hard republicans out there, don’t respond to this comment because I don’t care about your ignorant opinions.

You can tell the true character of a man by the company he keeps. It appears that Obama for most of his adult life has surrounded himself with unsavoury and highly undesirable and criminal characters. How can you Obama supporters out there not see the true character of this man who is running for president? Step back and take a good look at his past associations and decisions regarding the people he has surrounded himself with. He is not a good or trustworthy individual. He says and does whatever he needs to in order to win the election. He is sleazy, sneaky and is not truthful. Ask yourself. What will he do if he does win? A leopard never changes its spots.
287. Liv | 10.29.08
I never hear McCain explaining his plans for the country only mixing and twisting up what Obama says. Obama has explain what he will do in detail for the economy and foreign affairs during the town hall debate and several rallys. I think Mccain would have better response if he stops with the negetive and just explain his plans for our country. Palin…well she is just a joke she has no opinion of her own its the same thing over and over with her….but if you don’t know what you’re doing then I guess you can’t have must to say with an substance.
288. factchecer | 10.29.08
Thankfully a recent attempt to assinate Obama was derailed. There has been a great deal of unfounded personal character attacks on the Obama that have resulted in fear and presjudice that threaten the man and his campaign.
He may simply want to counter the unfounded fear and continue to press the issues. I do not know who it was that claimed to have not heard Obama explain how he intends to accomplish certain goals. That simply is not true.
Barack in an intelligent man, Magna cum Laude Harvard Law graudate, professor of constitutional law is just one fact that supports that.
He is able to draw intelligent and forward thinking people to him…I do not need to list them. All of these people see the potential of working with him, form all parties including Republican and Independents. Some of these people will tell why they support Barack. That might help a few people who think Barack is a terrorist.
Here is a question to ponder. If McCain (or anyone else frankly) has proof that Obama was in fact a Muslim (which is not a crime anyway), a terrorist, odd, or what ever other thing would scare the “H” out of anyone who might consider voting for Obama, wouldn’t he have flashed the PROOF of it from the mountain tops. Of course he would have!! Obama was in the IL Senate over 10 years before becoming the 2 years as a US senator. In that amount of time, there should be some.
Some people say that the truth hurts, well in this case the truth hurts McCain, that why he has only mentioned the truth he knows a few times. You may recall “No Ma’am, he is a Christian and family man, and I need to tell you, he is not someone you have to be afraid of being President” It was a “Maverick moment” we see too rarely there days.
I have done some research and here is what I learned:
Barack is a flesh and blood man, a Christian, a father, husband, son, grandson, a child of GOD and he is just as American as McCain or Palin or anyone else born in this country. And that is the truth, for anyone interested in it.
290. Steve | 10.29.08
30 minutes of uninterrupted Obama. Sounds like brainwashing but I guess that is appropriate since that is what they do with the media in other socialist and communist countries. I guess we’ll have to get used to this if Obama wins. So much for the ideals of our founding fathers.

All I can hear in my head when I think of Obama is the song “Cult of Personality”. And who on GOD’s Earth does he think he is by preempting the World Series??? Here are the facts.
Socialism is a transition phase from capitalism to communism. We are not a true capitalist economy or we’d be screwed and obviously communism doesn’t work. America is much closer to capitalism than communism. Obama’s agenda is definitely more socialist than McCain.
It’s true that the Bush administration screwed us pretty badly, but McCain is not Bush. Please vote on the facts, not to get get vengeance on the “Big, Bad, GOP”

I wanted McCain in 2000 but he lost the primary to W. I’m now a registered Democrat. A year ago today i had it in my mind that i would vote for McCain (even though he had considerably changed his rhetoric since 2000) if the Dem nominee for prez was someone i didn’t have total faith in. Three things have happened since then… 1- McCain picked Palin as his running mate - political pandering at its worst… 2- McCain took the low road, running a negative campaign that has encouraged divisiveness at a time when the American people need to come together. 3 - He also not only condoned, but encouraged the use of very dangerous (not to mention entirely inappropriate)labels like “terrorist” and “radical” to describe Obama. I’m sorry, but i can’t stand behind these actions.
304. Jack S | 10.29.08
I must say, Obama doing an informercial is pretty funny to me. Most people know that that 30 minute time slot is just to sell **** - we all know it. If you’ve ever bought something on an informercial you know what I’m talking about. They give you all these promises and hopes on how it’s going to make things easier when infact you buy it and it doesn’t work. Talk about a broken promise. I don’t think it’s going to make a big difference. It’s just going to be Obama’s face plastered all over the screen. It’s only going to hype up the dedicated democrates. By the end of his ‘I promise you this’ speech it will be over and he wouldn’t get into detail about what he’s really entailing. Which I will not be suprised.

The Obama campaign needs to do this infomercial and they’ve needed this much money for this campaign because 4 more years of a Republican White House just cannot happen.
Between Obama’s win, a majority in Congress with a filibuster-proof Senate, and Sarah Palin’s ignorant right vying for control of the party with the intellectual right, the Republicans will be ineffective and marginalized for a long time.
They made their own rules as they went along and had a 24 hour news cable channel devoted entirely to backing them up, and they still blew it. Too many people started to see through the BS. Finally.
310. Snedley | 10.29.08
OK - about the socialism ’spread the wealth’ ‘redistributor’ thing…
What do we call the current system in which the wealth is already being redistributed? Currently, middle class families pay more taxes than what Obama proposes, which they must to fill the void created by the tax breaks given to huge corporations. So, in a way, the current administration is already ‘redistributing’ your wealth by leaning on you for it’s tax dollars instead of large corporations who have the lobbyists and get the huge tax breaks. So if Obama is guilty of promoting Socialism (ridiculous) then the current administration and it’s would be successor to the ‘throne’ McCain are equally guilty of practicing Manorialism/Feudalism, where the citizens (serfs) are required to pay legal obligations to the governing body. Since Obama would be taxing the majority of Americans less than McCain, he is more of a Feudalist and he is secretly promoting a Feudalist agenda as the lord of the manor and the American people are serfs.
Is this ridiculous - OF COURSE IT IS, AND SO ARE THE SOCIALIST OBAMA ARGUMENTS.
311. Penny | 10.29.08
1. Obama is not pre-empting the game. The game starts at 8:30. 2. American taxes are and have always been a method of re-distribution of wealth. Correcting the imbalance is not socialism; it is correcting the imbalance. It’s been done over and over, and depending on who’s in power, some group benefits. 3. The McCain campaign is dealing in outright lies (for example, Palin saying that Albright doesn’t think Obama is ready - Albright has gone on television to refute that comment). Obama’s campaign does not lie about Palin and McCain. 4. Both candidates “plans” are just that; no one can promise anything until congress votes. Try to keep that in mind.
313. Jerry | 10.29.08

Thanks to everyone who has spoken up. I read these a lot but don’t usually post. Most thoughts have been good feedback. A few don’t qualify as thoughts at all.
But post 41 really struck me as unintelligent regarding America’s image. Most of the time I hear this it’s from people who have very little experience abroad.
I’ve been traveling the world for 20 years and have been in Asia, Australia, and many parts of Europe the past 6 months alone on business and this notion of an America-hating world is nonsense.
In spite of being imperfect we’re still a world leader and revered everyplace I’ve been. It’s sad we Americans forget we spread more goodwill and charity overseas than anybody else, not to mention we truly to hale from the land of opportunity.
People look up to us more than most folks realize. Example) I was in Norway 3 weeks ago (a socialist monarchy) and the comment I got more than anything was how surprising it is that Americans speak so badly about their country and elected leaders, even when they’re not agreed with.
In their estimation, the Bush-bashing is insulting, not because he’s a great president in their eyes, but because he is president of the greatest country on the planet, and if we don’t like the man we can vote him out.
But the presidency is bigger than one person and to bash it and bad mouth our own country sends the wrong message, especially to countries with much higher taxes and unemployment.
I responded that our culture’s freedom of expression knows no bounds but was told that complaining about our DEMOCRACY will damage our international standing as much as any policy doctrine, because of how blessed we are to still be Americans.
They were also very clear how sad (actually insulting) it is for an American to pretend they’re from someplace else (like Canada post 41)! I was actually complimented for using the word “WE” when describing us Americans and what’s going on in the country, good or bad. Norwegians long for a patriotic connection like that.
Most people forget that WE Americans still have more of everything than virtually anybody else, most importantly our DEMOCRACY!! And we also forget about all the other little budding democracies out there trying to emulate us.
In Australia and New Zealand they still thank us for saving them in WWII. In Ireland they’re scared as hell of terrorism and thank us for waging war on their behalf. Maybe it’s my good nature but I find pro-American sentiment everyplace I go.
So next time you hear somebody spitting about America’s international “image,” ask them their source and if it’s not a British tabloid it’s probably some other reporter who’s never been global.
And if you travel, don’t be an obnoxious American but definitely don’t pretend not to be one. You disrespect yourself, your country, and probably the locals wherever you are. Lastly for those interested (and totally bipartisan,) the majority of people I asked in these countries supported McCain over Obama.
Mostly because of the the experience issue but also because he hasn’t acted like he’s already won. It wasn’t a “scientific” poll but those were the results I got. As for my opinion on the matter, Post 26 who said experience does not equal wisdom has a point, but we’re not born with wisdom either so we have to prove we have it somehow.
The notion of proving it AFTER becoming president is unsettling to a lot of people, especially in countries much older than America. Whoever wins next Tuesday they will have my prayers, my wishes for good luck, and my commitment to remain an American wherever I go.
Post 64 - I agree with you. Things have gotten very divided with this election and we won’t fix anything in this nation unless we unite. Well said.

McCain: Blundering, bumbling, and gaffe-prone
Imagine four years of either, and decide accordingly. Because you’re going to get an administration that’s at most as good as their campaign.

As for a comment I read about the “honorable” John McCain…ask his ex-wife (and a league of other women that he has been so “honorable” with) about his honor and valor. Socialism - (mirriam webster dictionary)

Socialist? Hussein? Hitler?
Good God, people, get a grip and give up the fear campaign. Obama is no more the Antichrist than he is the Messiah.
Those who are “amazed” that people are so unaware of Evilbama’s plans to socialize the world need to look into socialism. They should also look at the mess that is Reactionary Socialism we are currently in, brought to you–in part, though it goes back a while–by Bush and McCain.
I honestly believe that if McCain beat Bush in the primaries of 2000 then we would be in much better shape than we are in now. However, those days are long gone, and we are stuck with what the GOP gave us eight years ago. Unfortunately, part of that party-first offering is a distorted, disjointed McCain of today. Please note: I do not put the blame squarely on Bush; this goes all the way back to Carter and includes everyone in between. But it happened on Bush’s watch, with McCain’s support 90% of the time.
And now we have two plans for the country. One is simplified and without details. The other is more drawn out–and it is open to criticism. Unfortunately, the GOP has yet again flocked to what they understand and is content criticizing the more thought out plan (even if it is darn near close to what their candidate offered in the past).
As to the bias of the article: note the endcaps. The top of the article is has Obama as the subject of Mystery Science Theater. Message: Obama is a B Movie. The bottom is a copy of McCain’s ad. Message: McCain gets the last word in this article. Everything in between is almost moot.

“Unfortunately the fact of the matter is if the GOP also had an African American candidate, this race would be much tighter and the GOP would probably win.”
Quite possibly — if McCain had picked either Lieberman or Colin Powell, I would have voted for him.
345. Which Joe? | 10.29.08
Which Joe do you like?
Joe the Working Poor, Joe the Plumber, Joe the Pope (remember, his real name is “Joseph Ratzinger”, which makes him a Joe too), Joe the Senator (who grew up as Joe the Working Class Kid), a cup of Joe, Joe Six Pack, Joe the College Student, just plain Joe?
I’ll betcha that most Joes would be for the Democratic way of government in bad times, and for the Republican way in good times. In bad times they need help from the government, and John “cut all government programs” McCain doesn’t seem to be willing to do that (ok, maybe with respect to health care). Barack Obama appears to be willing to do that. But I warn you guys and gals right now, that no matter who gets the desk in that oval room, there WILL be plenty of deficit spending, for that is one of the better ways to help a bad economy when inflation is at a manageable level.
Economic freedom is a measure of freedom. Money is a measure of economic freedom. Spreading the wealth is, in a way, spreading the freedom: it involves expanding the economic pie, and it involves ensuring that more people have more pieces of it.

I’m just amazed that almost everyone who has commented on this board seems to be finding all of their identity wrapped up in an election/political party/government. Is this really all you are?
If it is, this might be the real problem with the world.

“As avenues to foreign influence in innumerable ways, such attachments are particularly alarming to the truly enlightened and independent Patriot. How many opportunities do they afford to tamper with domestic factions, to practise the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion, to influence or awe the Public Councils! Such an attachment of a small or weak, towards a great and powerful nation, dooms the former to be the satellite of the latter.
Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens,) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake; since history and experience prove, that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of Republican Government.”

Barak Obama is wonderful. Joe Biden is wonderful. I am a registered Independant in West Virginia who has already voted for them. I will not have the opportunity to watch the 30 minute spot tonight because I have a night class - but this is history in the making. We need a President and Vice President who respect and admire the American people - not talk down to them and try to get them to believe a bunch of hateful, negative campaign garbage. I respected John McCain as a person before this campaign - but now McCain would do well to apologize openly for allowing his campaign to try to paint another senator and patriot as a “terrorist.” I’m tired of the negativity and looking forward to the election day results. We need everything the Obama/Biden ticket offers - from hope to healthcare.
352. MoveOn Guy for McCain | 10.29.08
In case you did not know, Senator Obama has raised about $300 million in contributions that fall under the $200 limit where disclosure of individuals’ names are not required under federal law.
On a web log called “Powerline” a number of people have been discussing the fact that Obama’s campaign website has readily been accepting credit card contributions in cases where the contributor’s name does not match the name associated with the credit card.
The Obama campaign appears to be paying an extra fee to the credit card processors on every transaction in order to use this “low security” method.
What this means is that one person can easily give Obama much more than the $2300 federal maximum and never have his/her name disclosed.
One of my colleagues at work tested the Obama campaign website this morning and gave $5 in the name of Ted Williams of Chatham, MA.
Of course, my colleague’s name is not Ted Williams and he does not live in Chatham.
Others have contributed in the names of John Galt, Adolfe Hitler, Crazy Eight, etc.
Encourage Senator Obama to explain this unethical fundraising tactic.
353. Benjamin | 10.29.08
Frank - and remember, Joe the Plumber doesn’t even make close to that. he’s pulling in about 40k, so really, pretend you make a lot of money and republicans will pretend you have a valid point.
Anyone else notice just how much our nation is better off thanks to social security, the program that republicans have called socialist since its inception? Picture an America without social security and medicare, two programs that spread the wealth, during this recent market collapse. The human toll of the problem would be exponentially higher, the health care stocks would have collapsed, the pharmaceuticals would have collapsed, and millions of our seniors would be in danger of starving and going without medical care. The social safety net WORKED and not just for our seniors… That it was in place to keep the worst case scenario from playing out, really softened the blow of this recent crash.
America became the world economic super power after we started spreading the wealth, not before. It’s not socialism, it’s a regulated free market with social saftey nets. It’s superior to most other systems and it is part of what has made us the greatest nation on earth. Spreading the wealth is as American as interstate freeway systems, Social Security, the internet, the moon landing, the space program, and the United States Armed Forces. All of these things were made possible by the US government taxing and spending to spread the wealth and all of these things have contributed substantially to our economic power and greatness. Don’t let the republican true believers fool you. History is what it is.

I love how so many here have decried socialism. I guess they should forfeit their social security, quit funding public education, give back their so-called economic stimulus, let Wall Street burn, etc., etc..
With a miniscule 1% of the population having almost 40% of the wealth in 2001, the number of people living in poverty runs around 12% and the homeless population by conservative estimates could fill our 15th largest city.
This is shameful. The rich point out the small percentage of poor who are seemingly content to be poor but for the vast majority poverty is NOT a choice.
The measure of civilization of any society is how it cares for its most helpless,,,the poor, the old and the young. By this measure we have failed and will continue to do so until we grasp that there is enough for everybody and having a large reservoir of poor impoverishes the well being of all of our bodies and souls.

The demi-dems keep saying that the so called bailout of the banks is privatizing the profits, but that is just another demi-dem fantasy.
With all the ‘so called’ affirmative action (racial and femi-phem), minimum wage, and all the other regulations about who, what, when & where they must hire, it doesn’t sound like privatizing the profits to me.
It looks like the PROFITS HAVE BEEN ‘very much’ SOCIALIZED to me.

it’s sad that our so-called ‘leaders’ pit us against each other, and so many media organizations reinforce that air of tribalistic nepotism instead of providing objective and informational reporting. while ‘liberals’ are certainly not entirely innocent of this either, it is evident to me that coming to power through playing on hatred for our fellow countrymen is a central tactic (or is that a strategy?) of republicans and has been since at least the 1980s.
people want so badly to think the answer is simple and that they have it all figured out. the fact of the matter is that both the aristocrats and the plebians have a vital role to play in our economy. consumers create jobs every bit as much as employers do. without the average person having disposable income to buy products, companies have no revenue stream to create jobs. it’s all about balance. the glib assertion that ‘the rich and corporations are the pricipal movers of the economy’ is patently false. consumers and producers are two sides of the same coin, and there must be a balance between the two. currently consumer spending is way down because the cost of living has increased while the average person’s earnings have not. naturally, this means that profit is down for companies. therefore we cannot pile money upon the rich until they create jobs; they will not create jobs without a rosier revenue forecast, and that forecast will not improve until consumers start buying more.

Education, and history being made using money DONATED by millions to Senator Obama. Someday, when the electorial college system is gone and voter registration for Federal elections is done on-line, 2008 will be the year remembered for “one vote, one person, one hundred dollars”.

Stop all that silly, memorized slander of “socialism” — as Buckley junior said, who are the Big Government, Big Spenders now? The Neo-Cons! As one Republican “thinker” said back in Reagan’s days, the Radical right’s (like Bush) system is anyway “Socialism for the rich, hard capitalism for everybody else.”

So the rich are going to be squeezed for cash if their taxes go up? Some of us have small businesses (I for one) and our pay checks dont’ come from the rich and we can use a tax cut for us (me for one) who make less than 250,000. And where is the agonizing cry about 10 billion of your money going to smoke in war–well maybe redistributed through no bid contracts, or the 700 billion redistributed without even a “welfare” interview or a “plan” to get the economy and the receiving institutions back on their feet! This massive grab of your cash–it doesn’t worry you? Ending the war will save 10 billion–a month! I know, we can’t call it victory, right? Please! Just give me the 10 billion. Talk about cash grabs! Its right under your nose! Right now!

Why is Obama able to buy his way to the presidency? In the interest of fair play in politics and keeping with the tradition of the current policy of the Saturday morning message of the current president, Mcain should be allowed to have equal time to respond to the lies and inuendos Obamo makes tonight. I know Obama has raised considerably more then Mcain but that is because he changed course on campaign finance rules that he at first supported, then bactracked and raised private funds while Mcain kept his word and raised his money based on those strict rules. Let’s level the playing field and either cancel Obama’s infomercial or allow Mcain equal time to respond to whatever Obama says. This is America and each canditate is suppost to get equal time. This is written by a Democrat who can’t stand some of what comes out of Obama and Biden’s mouth. Both have queastionable ties to terrorists but deny the truth. Evidence of Obama’s ties exists but Mcain won’t be allowed to speak his mind because he stayed true to his commitment to accept only on campaign finance rules. Let’s be fair.

If these comments are any indication of the “pulse” of our nation it is clear that, whoever ends up president, we are doomed. We are fractured, split, and consumed with fighting from within. Nothing can be accomplished in an atmosphere like this. We are all so sure that are right that we can’t even consider the possibility that we could be wrong (Dennis Miller called it the fascism of opinion).
This “certainty” has made it impossible to even try to understand the fellow Americans that we must work with to try to solve the issues and problems ahead of us. How can a nation that is so strong be filled with citizens that are so fearful of each other that it literally paralyzes us?
365. Paula Stephens | 10.29.08

I am so sick of all repubs & dems. Both parties get credit for the mess we are in. I have seen both parties act like spoiled brats not getting their way when they deal with a prez of the opposite party. And now we have her majesty queen (gag) Nancy P…GAG GAG GAG!

I truly cannot wait for the election to be over. We definitely need a change and help. Our current leader has driven the United States from the #1 power of the world to close to zero. He has lied about everything has put us in a useless war (got Sadam - (he didn’t bring down the twin towers - I think it was Bin Laden) but oops our present commander in chief had to finish off Sadam for his daddy (his daddy started the whole Sadam mess and didn’t have a chance to finish him off). Weapons of mass destruction - none to be found - another lie. Invading Iraq would help with keeping foreign oil in check - lie - obviously our leader never went to a gas station this summer but he did help all those oil companies make billions in profits (wait isn’t he an oil man?) And what about our wonderful vice president (isn’t he part of Haliburten?) Oh that’s right that got swept under the carpet too. They wanted to impeach President Clinton because he had an affair (if his wife didn’t care neither did I) & because he admitted to smoking pot in college. Our current President has lied & cheated our one time Great country (he’s the one that should have been brought for impeachment - he has put the country in total chaos, has demolished how many American families (by a useless war, and killing our economy, etc., etc., etc.) Trillions in debt? Or did we forget that he’s an alcoholic and did cocaine when he was older not a college kid (again swept under the carpet). And by the way as he has proudly admitted Sen. McCain voted with the president 90% of the time. Moving on Sen. Obama has chosen Sen. Biden as his vice presidential choice he has been a senator for many years and knows what’s going on and would know how to govern our country if God forbid it was necessary one day. On the other hand Sen. McCain’s choice is as he is admitting a “diva” who tries to dupe us that she is just one of us soccer mom’s downing some beers with Joe six pack (just shows where her mind is)this woman has sights on become our leader. God Help Us. Also everyone j Just for the record I am not Republican, Democrat or anything. I vote in every election for whomever I feel would be good for our country not the world. I have voted both Democrat and Republican in the past (no I didn’t vote for the current one - could never vote for that). Change oh yes - whomever wins has a close to impossible road infront of him, trying to undo all the damage our current president has inflicted on our country but change it will - It Must!!

Out of one side of the McCain campaign they’re decrying Obama’s purchase of this 30 minutes of airtime, and out of the other side they are (read: Palin is) spouting a doom-and-gloom scenario that a President Obama will restore the (gasp) Fairness Doctrine. Remember the Fairness Doctrine? I do. I grew up with it, during an era when the debates were impassioned, but civilized, and no network could so skew their coverage and advertising that they could tip an election. Hey kids, guess what, if the FD were in place, you’d have nothing to complain about, because that 30 minutes of airtime would have to be … think about it now … BALANCED OUT by 30 minutes given to McCain by the same networks. Hmm. Tell me again why this would be a bad thing, Sarah?

Oh, okay, I get it: “Most recently, Orr served as White House Spokesman and Internet Director for President George W. Bush and Special Advisor to Governor Schwarzenegger for Internet Communications. Though his previous experience has been with Republicans, his blog is non-partisan.” Totally explains the snarky, vaguely anti-Obama tone of this post. Nevermind.

-MoveOn Guy for McCain- Educate yourself on the the CC process before you continue spreading the BS Republican propaganda you read off RCN reports. You failed to mention that over the past few months, more than $5 million has been refunded to those credit cards that didnt have matching information.
Your comment is ridiculous - “The Obama campaign appears to be paying an extra fee to the credit card processors on every transaction in order to use this “low security” method.”
I have my own business for 6 years now utilizing Amex, Visa, MC and Disc credit card processing modules and and there is no such thing as “Paying Extra Fees” for “low security.”
When processing credit cards online, you can either hand input each detail of the transaction or submit a ticket which is instantly processed. When dealing with thousands of contributions, filing tickets would be the most efficient way of processing the donations. Stopping phony transactions with fake addresses and names like Adolf Hitler is the responsibility of the credit card companies. It just shows how desperate the credit card companies are to make some money in this currently failing Republican economy.
To accuse the Obama campaign of a conspiracy just makes it clear you are on the negative ad campaign attack bandwagon with the disgruntled presidential candidate that doesnt have enough support to rake in huge donations. Maybe he should sell one of his 7 houses or his wife’s $100 million dollar beer distribution company to get some campaign $$.

Ok so My family was featured on this program tonight and I would just like to point out that I am glad they interviewed REAL hard working families who are concerned with what the future holds. Barack Obama may not have all the experience in the world but he is a true leader and I pick him any day. Look at George Bush; All the experience in the world right? And look at his tour of duty in the white house! And btw it dosnt matter if your republican or not but you can’t just sit there and call someone an “American hater”. How informed are you? It kills me to see such idiodic comments as these. No one is trying to “buy” their way into the presidency. If you didn’t notice the message of tonight was about the people of this nation and the changes that concern us. Not a bashing forum for McCain. Not once did I hear Obama say anything negative about McCain. But it’s all good. We have the right to vote, and everyone has the right to their own opinions. But don’t sit here and say comments like “American hater”. What right or proof do you have to say that? Being racists and prejudice because someone has different views doesn’t make your political opinions right. Be classy about your decisions, support whoever you do for legitimate reasons and not for the party they are with, the color of their skin or any other prejudice reasons. You should vote for the right person for the RIGHT reasons.

Here it is the definition of socialism:1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.
How can people not say that Barack is a socialist. He wants to “socialize” our health care that allows him and the government to determine who will provide you with health care, look at the definition, it’s in there. He wants to take the tax money that the working class pays and give it to people who are perfectly capable of working but they would rather live off our tax dollars. The american dream is to work hard and prosper, not prosper from others hard work. Businesses do this but they are capable of doing this because they did work hard and achieved the american dream.
I don’t understand people saying that the McCain debates and ads are too aggressive, isn’t that what we want in a president. I would rather have a president that others see as being a little more hot headed and heavy handed, rather than having a president who will bend over for the countries which we call enemies.
America do the right thing vote based on the facts, not because of race, creed, or religion. Vote for John McCain
372. Bug Man | 10.29.08
All of you McCain supporters are just upset because your candidate is behind in the polls and your candidate didn’t think about buying a 30 minute spot on prime time TV to run a very informative ad that shows what Obama will do for our country and his plans. Also if you noticed during the ad Obama did’t trash McCain but everyone here knows that if the shoe were on the other foot and McCain was actually appearing on what you call a “30 min infomercial ” the entire topic would be him bashing Obama and talking about all the things he has/will do wrong.Obama said himself he will not be a perfect president but atleast he is man enough to admit he will make mistakes,by God we all know Bush has and i know McCain will.this is my thought take it to heart or not i don’t care. A democratic supporter will agree and republicans won’t because well we all know republicans think they know it all and thats it.

Every day I try to understand why anyone would trust McCain or Palin? It’s one thing to stand behind your personal believes or your political philosophy but truthfully speaking, McCain is not ready. he can’t even manage a steady campaign, his answers to many questions sound very much like Bush, at least Bush really didn’t care, but McCain tries to insisted that he does care and understands when he does NOT. McCain is out of touch. He has lived a sheltered life by his wealth, and has no idea how “the other half Americans” live. McCain only knows very little about many political issues , examples are his stands on issues such as the economy and Iraq. McCain needs to stand up and be honest and say what he thinks , not try to create this ” make believe” strategy convincing us that he knows it all. My vote is going to Obama not only because I agree with him on many issues but because he is a strong candidate. He is a progressive individual who is ready to carry out any challenge. McCain can’t even select a good partner for VP. Why would anyone elect someone who opposes your views to be by your side?

I’m amazed by the incredible amount of public interest in Sarah Palin. Good or bad, she’s become somewhat of a pop icon. People are dressing like her to be and/or mock her all at the same time.

I am an independent voter, originally for McCain, but when people I respected shared their thoughts about Obama, I took a look with an OPEN mind (Something I’m not seeing a lot of on the right, frankly.) And I found that he is reasonable and intelligent and wants to bring the country together not tear us apart. He is running a positive campaign, rather than negative.
As far as O’s experience, you all might want to take a look at Lincoln’s credentials when running for President. Hmmmm. Also, if you can bring yourself to let go of your cynicism for a moment, read his book “Audacity of Hope”. He’s a good man and has hope that its not too late for Americans to come together to solve our problems and have civil public discourse once again.
