Obama wins TIME “Person of the Year” - Palin is a runner up

By Jimmy Orr | 12.17.08

Who didn’t see this one coming?

TIME magazine announced today that Barack Obama is the “Person of the Year.”

Hope

While running mate Joe Biden is angering animal rights activists everywhere, his boss is glowing in a write-up from TIME editors in the annual selection.

In naming the President-elect, TIME said Obama, ” … overcame a lack of experience, a funny name, two candidates who are political institutions, and the racial divide to become the 44th President of the United States.”

Shocker?

The magazine admitted that its selection of the President-elect probably wouldn’t be a big surprise.

“It’s unlikely that you were surprised to see Obama’s face on the cover,” writes TIME’s David Von Drehle. “He has come to dominate the public sphere so completely that it beggars belief to recall that half the people in America had never heard of him two years ago — that even his campaign manager, at the outset, wasn’t sure Obama had what it would take to win the election.”

Why Obama?

OK, so the selection didn’t surprise anyone.  Still though, what was behind the pick?

“…The essence of both Obama’s strength and his promise is that, according to a recent poll, a strong majority of Americans believe he will accomplish most of what he aims to do,” writes Von Drehle.  “For having the confidence to sketch that kind of future in this gloomy hour and for showing the competence that makes Americans hopeful that he will pull it off, Barack Obama is Time’s Person of the Year for 2008.”

How do they pick?

The editors at TIME say, “The Person of the Year” is the person who most affected the news for better or worse.”  They say the selection generates much debate among Time staffers but they all agree that the award is “not an honor.”

“It’s neutral,” said Richard Stengel, TIME’s Managing Editor.  “It is a recognition of somebody’s effect on the world.”

They like him

Maybe the selection isn’t an honor, but this isn’t a Putin-like pick of last year.  The editors clearly think highly of the President-elect.

“As Obama has moved with unprecedented speed to build an Administration that would bolster the confidence of a shaken world, his flash and dazzle have faded into the background,” writes Von Drehle.  “In the waning days of his extraordinary year and on the cusp of his presidency, what now seems most salient about Obama is the opposite of flashy, the antithesis of rhetoric: he gets things done. He is a man about his business — a Mr. Fix It going to Washington. That’s why he’s here and why he doesn’t care about the furniture.”

Runners-up

Just like the Miss America pageant, there are runners-up – although there isn’t the clause that the first runner-up takes over if the titleholder is unable to fulfill his or her duties.  And the runners-up are:

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, French President Nicholas Sarkozy, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, and Chinese film director Zhang Yimou, who organized the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

YouTube

By the way, TIME’s editors asked for suggestions from the public via YouTube, and interestingly Barack Obama did not win the popular vote.

Who did?  Former Republican candidate for president Ron Paul.

Don’t throw a shoe; throw a slipper.

2. amazing123 | 12.17.08

I think this is well deserved for him to recieve this honor. Anyone who can be involved with so many shady people who themselves are involved in so much corruption and still be able to keep his coat tails clean deserves an award. I think banks and CEO’s need to take lessons from this guy on how to keep thier shady pasts in the past. This would solve all of the worlds problems overnight.

3. hiatherefolks | 12.17.08

I thought this year it was going to be Michael Phelps…

Should have been Colbert..

5. Joshua Meyer | 12.17.08

Are you serious??? Not surprised???? Are you stupid? i think I remember someone winning 8 gold medals all world records @ the 08′ Olympics. Is that not good enough for person of the year?
What has Obama done? Smile and wave… That is how you get to be “Person of the Year”?
****, put me on the cover of Time if thats the case.
IDIOTS.

I pick Obama for #1. His energy is bringing a lot of people together with an “OPEN MIND” & this is what is desperately needed for this world today.

We do not need narrow minded people to help with the mess that has been created. We need someone with a lot of Intelligence & heart & I find that Obama fits this picture.

8. L.Wilburn | 12.17.08

I am praying that our future President does what is right and looks to the Lord for wisdom.

11. Irritated at US Politics | 12.17.08

Seriously though, what has he DONE. He has only been put on a pedestal for minority breakthrough. Has he cured cancer? Has he fought a far? Has he sacrificed a limb, years of military service, or time away from family for his country? WHAT has he specifically done that is worth of praise on the front cover of TIME?

12. steve | 12.17.08

And I was happy that Palin hadn’t been mentioned in the news for a while. Foiled again!

13. Marilyn McPherson | 12.17.08

Richly deserved. Preparations for the presidency have been inspiring. He embodies hope. I have a lot of confidence in his ability to pull this country together and maintain an atmosphere of calm and clear-headed forward motion as head of state. Mazaltov!

14. Phillip | 12.17.08

15. Ima Patriot | 12.17.08

Dear Time,

As a conservative and true patriot of America as intended by the founders (many of whom were Christians, yes the truth hurts badly), I am very excited to hear that Obama is angering the extremist marxist socialist democrats who thought he too would completely change after telling all those lies to America so he could get elected.

However, as the real agenda is slowly, quietly ‘behind the doors’ revealed (i.e. as extremist socialist/marxist democrats ‘get angrier’), will you then have the guts to recant all your propagandist rhetoric?

Will you then have the guts to set aside your own extremist liberal weirdness (God only knows why you people think like you do), and confess Palin should be the next US President? Will you have the guts to admit she will DO what she PROMISES to do?

16. sam | 12.17.08

18. thetruth | 12.17.08

Hey, amazing123, you have my vote for Racist of the Year. Don’t worry, no one is going to make you tear down your Caribou Barbie poster.

19. Toonces | 12.17.08

What a joke! nobama doesn’t deserve it. He’s done nothing to help anyone. He’s merely a symbol or golden idol. They should have chosen Phelps! What a bunch idiots!

20. jimmyjohn | 12.17.08

Well, not much of an “honor” when Palin comes in second….if all you have to do is embarrass your political party and prove you are an idiot, there could be lots of candidates for this “honor”. This is the smallest “award” Obama will ever get.

21. Ima Patriot | 12.17.08

Still waiting for my comment to appear… and you have the guts to scream about censorship?

22. BIG_AL | 12.17.08

All this great attention to a fraud. Where were you born obama? Who are you??

27. Joe | 12.17.08

It’s about who “most affected the news for better or worse”, not who won the most gold medals. Obama is the clear winner here. Take a look at the news over the last year, not just in this country, but around the world.

28. PleaseChange | 12.17.08

#5 Joshua, if you believe that all Obama did was wave and smile, then you haven’t been paying attention. Your partisan distain is obvious.

The noun “effect” is needed here. Not “affect”, which is a verb.

ima patriot,
u are no more of an american patriot than the sadaam hussien!!!

irritated at us politics,
what he has done is not only inspire a nation thAt is also going thru a mental depression thanks to your boy gwbush, but he is the only person in washington who is not corrupt by washington politics, and for once,we have a person in the white house who gets it!!

he gets what its like to worry about issues that your rich conservatives never have to worry about..choosing between gas and food..between food and rent..between which one of your 3 or 4 jobs u need to let go because its knocking u down health wise, and u don’t go to a doctor because u do not have insurance..

im glad we have a community organizer in the white house..we have someone who’s ear has been in the mouth of the community for years now..
obama is that person who all of u might know..
u might know of A person who is so bright And intelligent,And they also know the in’s and outs of getting things done, but, they are a doer more than a talker..

he saw the issues in the community And what did he do??
he ran for the state legislature seat..

he saw issues that the state could only handle if someone wAs the voice of the people, and whAt did he do?? he ran for senator..

he saw issues concerning our country that he thought to himself, needed attention now! and he didn’t want to wait and see if he could trust the likes of hillary, biden, mccain or anyone to undo what gwbush has done..
he knew attacking the issues of our economy and the debt being placed on our kids to pay off,the war,our national security, health care, job loss, among other issues was to be something to do now,and on day 1 when the new president would take office..

you all should be proud!
we finally got someone in the white house who don’t sound, act, nor governs like a politician..

you should be very proud!!
im so happy and proud, and by the way he was greeted in europe,so is the world..

they are ready for america to take over the lead as world leaders, not world cowboys..

and,we will finally get bin laden under an obama Administration…

god bless america,and president obama!!!!!

so he ran for president!!!!

32. Tim B | 12.17.08

@chuck: “The media love affair continues…”

A self-fulfilling prophecy if ever there was one. The Bush administration browbeat the media into submission by denying access to anyone who questioned them, and I’m sure you recall the McCain campaign’s attempt to hide Palin from the media until it was too late to matter. People don’t like being treated poorly and tend to react accordingly. So you inexplicably continue to see liberal bias in the media, while everyone else sees angry, petulant reporters and editors getting revenge now that the tables have turned.

33. Tim B | 12.17.08

@Ima Patriot: “Still waiting for my comment to appear… and you have the guts to scream about censorship?”

You right wingers are a paranoid bunch. Pretty fact-challenged as well, based on your very first sentence (hint: read up on Deism)

34. musafir | 12.17.08

The news caused mixed feelings. I voted for him. Warts and all, felt that compared to the two on the other side, Obama and Biden were better. Like many others, disappointed by the direction taken and some of the appointments made
by Obama. Clearly, his administration will be different but not much different then the current one. Still, the bottom line is “better”.

35. siddie | 12.17.08

Oh Time,
Sorry for your poor analyzing effort.
Time ,you lost your standard !
Correct yourself.
Do not repeat such mistake again.

36. Angelou | 12.17.08

It could not have been Phelps or Palin for sure. You need brains to even have a chance.

Any moron can swim or say stupid comments on public television, but not everyone gets to be chosen President.

37. cpun | 12.17.08

Of course obama should be the PoY.

Ummm…first African-American president in the country’s 200+ year history. Does that not seem rather significant? Worthy of recognition?

To all the repub partisans, you should try being an American for 5 minutes and taking pride in that fact itself if nothing else.

By the way Phelps is awesome, but winning in sports does NOT compare to being the world’s most powerful leader. Get some perspective.

38. Profess | 12.17.08

Irritated at US Politics Wrote: “Seriously though… …what has he DONE?”

Obama has sponsored 136 bills since Jan 4, 2005. Two have become law. Obama has co-sponsored 619 bills during this same time period before running for president. This figure does not include bills that Obama contributed substantially to as cosponsor, like the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006 or the Cooperative Proliferation Detection, Interdiction Assistance, and Conventional Threat Reduction Act of 2006. If you need to know what those bills were about, look them up. During the 109th congress he was appointed to several committees, including the Committee on Environment and Public Works, the Committee on Foreign Relations and Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

These are just a few of the political accomplishments Obama has made. List a few for your drooled-over, ethics violating, double talking palin.

Her accomplishments include raising the city of Wasilla’s long term debt from $0 to $19 million plus.[Wasilla Comprehensive Annual Financial Report 2003, Table 10] She said she was against the lobbyists but… …has a lt. gov. who is a former oil lobbyist and hired Wasilla’s first federal lobbyist (a former Ted Stevens staffer) and was supported during her 2006 race by Alaska’s oil politicians. Now she is trying to beat the ethics charges being brought to her by troopergate. Runner up for TIME’s Person of the Year… …REALLY?

just because you say you are a patriot does not mean diddley squat. Just because an abusive spouse says he loves his wife does not mean diddley squat. Just because sarah palin says people in southern virginia are true americans means nothing. wake up -use your brain do some easy research — the framers of the constitution made it clear this country was not a country founded on the christian religion. they left england to get away from 1. the king 2. crazy puritans 3. the pope’s fight with the king
the last thing they wanted was for religion to have any say in their government. the clergy in england and throughout europe were thieves and pediphiles. check out the period from 1500 through 1700 in western europe and america -the religious leaders murdered 25% of humans living in europe-(the protestants vs. the catholics)
you have been duped by idiots telling you lies. use your brain. not your goose step.

40. get a life | 12.17.08

George W. Bush got picked both times he was elected President. Why should Obama’s election be considered less significant. If there is any bias in the selection, it is a bias in favor of politicians, particularly new US Presidents.

I will never, ever understand how those who call themselves Christians are the most filled with hate, self-righteous judgment, & ill will. “Christian” implies following the example of Christ. What I wouldn’t give to hear from a genuine follower of Christ - patient, forgiving, accepting, quiet, compassionate, temperate, wise…

Of all candidates & politicians available, Barack Obama is the only one to exhibit these characteristics. Kudos, Time. No single figure in our lifetime will prove more influential or consequential than our 44th president. I have never been more proud of this country than on Nov. 4th. To be filled with hope after 8 years of madness and heartache and destruction is a gift from God. To be honored with an honorable leader after the darkness should make the coldest heart glad.

God bless everyone, not just Republicans. Not just “pro-America” states, not just the USA. Not just Christians. Not just white people. Everyone everywhere. Support your leader and hope that his results are as good as his promise and potential. Merry Christmas.

43. Dave | 12.17.08

What the press and much of the public fail to understand is that it takes about 2 years for politicians to impact the economy. The economy of this fall was brought on by the switch to a Congress controlled by the Democrats and a President trying to avoid being the “bad guy” by vetoing everything sent his way like Ford did.

It was not helped by the prior period where Republicans in Congress started spending like Democrats and whenever anything unpleasant arose - like the attempts to fix Freddie Mac they backed down when the paid off Democrats objected.

Now the current President who admits to abandoning free market principles and an incoming President who, also backed by a Congress (remember only Congress can spend money and only the House can initiate tax bills), will outspend every President in history to “save” industries and unions and banks that have no business being saved.

So the real question is what will happen in 2 years - and that you can blame on Obama and the current Congress. Then he will deserve to be man of the year - not necessarily a good thing at that point. My guess - either hyper inflation and unemployment that will make the late 70’s look great in comparison, or a depression as deep or deeper than that of the 1930’s.

Either way we will lose more freedoms and gain more “protection” from the government. The scam called “global warming” will start to become clear even to the public and the press by then, although the politicians will blame the scientists - forgetting who paid those scientists to “produce” the current “crisis”.

My only hope at that point is that we will then see a Reagan like character emerge who can inspire the American people to return to the precepts that this nation was founded on - if not I fear revolution and fragmentation of the country.

44. cpun | 12.17.08

dONT WORRY BOut THe NamE –> Your mocking comment is in poor taste and proves that you are in fact a sarah palin supporter. It also shows that the only way you can feel worthy of yourself is to be a r@c!st (as most of those kind of people are).

Ima Patriot

A patriot?

You are no patriot if you are posting such incredible vitriol about the newly elected president of the United States.

You realize you are calling YOUR president a “socialist, marxist” and liar?

Of course if you do not consider Obama your president, then you really are not a patriot.

And that is the truth of it. Those claiming to mer Conservative Christian Patriots are behaving like radical, hating traitors.

This is your president. Get over it.

46. rackinroll | 12.17.08

Like your first choice this person has a way with people and can accomplish great things with the likes of people. My second choice for the person of the year would be the chinese Film maker Zhung Yimou . What he did and what he created was beyond human comprehendion. If one man could organize and create such a magnificant spectical with just ordinary people then what could be created if we put our minds and heart into much loafter goals such as climate and energy issues. I believe our new President is looking to do just that. I congratulate him and wish him and his adminstration the very best in the comming years .

47. Harris | 12.17.08

“I am praying that our future President does what is right and looks to the Lord for wisdom.”

Anyway, Palin and Paulson are clearly strange picks, but Palin is a clear sop to her fanbase and spares them looking ‘biased’, or in other words, ‘discerning’.

48. Ted Peterson | 12.17.08

The diference, at this point in time, between a good man and a bad one lies solely in the fruit he beares. Time will reveal the fruit left by mr. Obama, such as Mr. Clinton left behind, upon leaving the White House. What we can say at this very point in time is that Mr. Obama has bore fruit to such an majestic extent that that enabled him to reach that prestigious, world encompassing, Oval Office overlaiden with political intrigues. The political like, probably, onforeseen heretofore ! May God ever Bless him in introducing a better world, evading unnecesary culture pillages and the ongoing human onslaughter. Complacent America, wake up ! Protect and even stimulate mr. Obama even more to do good ! It’s your time !

“By the way, TIME’s editors asked for suggestions from the public via YouTube, and interestingly Barack Obama did not win the popular vote.

Who did? Former Republican candidate for president Ron Paul.”

So, Ron Paul topped TIME’s public poll for this honor, but then the editors must have decided the majority of people on that poll were gravely mistaken and he doesn’t deserve any honor, not man of the year, runner up or even mention in their “people that mattered” section. Ridiculous.

51. chuck | 12.17.08

@ Tim B: “A self-fulfilling prophecy…”

During the last days of the election, Obama and his handlers excluded reporters from the Washington Times, New York Post, and Dallas Morning News from traveling on the campaign plane. The reporters had originally been traveling with them until they endorsed McCain. So I’d say that door swings both ways.

As far as the media “being browbeat into submission”, the media is not really answerable to anyone. The apologize to no one and retract very little. According to many sources, including a recent UCLA Political Science study, there truly is a liberal media bias.

It was impossible for Palin to escape a complete media examination no matter what she did. She didn’t have to hide or be hidden by anyone. “Reporters” descended on her hometown and were determined to find out every detail about her and her family they could (as they should).

The media saw an opportunity to make themselves part of history. Obama is just a man… and a politician. Reality will be very hard to deny and sugar coat for the American public.

I wish Obama well.

52. Larry Weisenthal | 12.17.08

>>whenever anything unpleasant arose - like the attempts to fix Freddie Mac they backed down when the paid off Democrats objected.<<

Correction: The House passed Fannie/Freddie regulatory legislation with strong bipartisan support, including a majority of Democrats. The Senate did not bring a bill to the floor because of the actions of Republican lobbyists on prominent Republican Senators.

53. A Christian | 12.17.08

I see all these negative comments to Christians but don’t see any negative comments from anybody that resembles a Christian.

No Christian would’ve voted for Hussein Obama. No true American would’ve voted for him either. This election only proves that the Presidency is bought. Our government is a corporation and could care less about the people. Hussein Obama is the biggest fraud in the history of the United States of America, maybe that is why he got the vote.

Time magazine is garbage anyway, nobody should give a rats as what they think.

For all of you with twisted knickers, consider the fact that every POTUS to have served since the beginning of TIME’s tradition has been named PoY. And W got it twice. Not even Republicans like him anymore.

Other notables include Chiang Kai-shek, Adolph Hitler, and the Pope. The award goes to who makes the biggest waves in the news, not who does the most good or the most physical work.

For a complete list, search for it. You may be surprised. You may be vindicated.

So lets actually talk about stupidity.

Obama said his office had no contact with the governors office. Then he has to do an internal investigation, into what? If his office had no contact with the governor then what is there to investigate?

And, if his office had no contact with the governor office, what exactly is it that Obama is not releasing to the press until December 22nd?

Now of course, if this were the Bush administration, those on the left would be asking these very same questions. But this is the Obama administration; questioning Obama is just not done!

That would be racism!

Obama has a LOT of people around him working on the transition. Investigating simply means verifying all contacts and chanels of communication. Obama has demonstrated that he is a very careful and thoughtful individual. It only makes sense in a case of potential criminal charges that he verify his statements.

“And, if his office had no contact with the governor office, what exactly is it that Obama is not releasing to the press until December 22nd?”

As requested by the Judge, he is making no comments or releasing any statements. I repeat “AS REQUESTED BY THE JUDGE”

What is so difficult to understand about that?

Still need to talk about stupidity Heather?

69. CD | 12.18.08

Ron Paul tried to warn us all about the economy and flawed monetary system, and people laughed at him. So, the guy who is akin to Nostradamus doesn’t even get a mention, even though those on the web voted for him. I guess people don’t want to hear how stupid they are for not taking him seriously.

Obama is my president, and I will respect that. The moment he steps in office and starts to expand government power, I will not.
