Until a leader steps up, Limbaugh is the head of the GOP
By Jimmy Orr | 03.04.09
Make no mistake. Right now, Rush Limbaugh is the leader of the Republican party.
No other Republican is getting any attention, and you can credit whomever you want.
Maybe it is the brilliant scheming of Rahm Emanuel, David Plouffe, Paul Begala, and James Carville. They seem to think so.
Laundry list
Maybe it is the vacuum of Republican leadership due to any number of factors including:
A) Bobby Jindal’s dismal performance delivering the Republican response to Obama’s address to Congress.
B) Sarah Palin’s decision to lie low.
C) Michael Steele’s inexplicable strategy of taking on Limbaugh.
D) The inexplicable and unbelievable strategy of putting Joe the Plumber on a pedestal.
E) House Minority Leader John Boehner apparently auditioning for and winning the part of The Invisible Man.
F) The media. Of course you have to blame the media.
G) Rush Limbaugh himself.
It probably is a combination of all of these points.
And until someone else steps up – like an elected official that can articulate what the GOP stands for — it’s going to stay that way.
McLovin’ it
Limbaugh doesn’t mind it. He’s having fun. He’s totally in his element.
Today, he took it all a step further. On his radio show, he did the equivalent of saying “meet me in the church parking lot down by the dumpsters at 3 pm.” He called the president out.
“If these guys are so impressed with themselves,” he said of Emanuel and his team. “And if they are so sure of their correctness, why doesn’t President Obama come on my show? We will do a one-on-one debate of ideas and policies,” he said.
Points
Limbaugh rattled off a number of items he’d like to discuss with President Obama including the economy, Guantanamo Bay, health care, the stock market, ACORN, unions, etc.
“Just come on this program,” Limbaugh taunted. “Let’s have a little debate. You tell me how wrong I am and you can convince the rest of the Americans that don’t agree with you how wrong we all are. You’re a smart guy, Mr. President. You don’t need these hacks to front for you.”
No ballet, please
Calling Obama one of the “most gifted speakers of our age,” Limbaugh said he wasn’t interested in debating Begala or Carville or Emanuel (calling him “the ballerina”).
“These people, compared to you, Mr. President, are rhetorical chum,” he said.
No news from the White House yet.
Dems winning?
Although it may seem like this is playing into the hands of the Democrats, not everyone on the left is seeing it that way.
Take Susan Estrich, for example. She’s citing history. You can’t beat Rush, she says.
“He talks for hours every day. He gets paid to talk. Just talk. Doing it well is no small thing; witness the number of people who have tried to be him, or be the NOT-him, and failed,” Estrich writes.
Not buying
Former Hillary Clinton adviser Peter Daou has his doubts too. “I don’t buy into this ‘brilliant’ strategy of elevating Rush Limbaugh,” he writes.
“I know it’s hard for Democrats to appreciate how quickly political fortunes turn – the glow of victory, the high of electoral success gives a sense of inevitability and invincibility, of permanence. But there’s nothing permanent about power. The tide will turn again, and the engine that will drive it is the fury stirred by the likes of Limbaugh. Feeding that machine, expanding and enhancing it is a mistake. A serious one.”
But don’t tell that to Paul Begala. He’s pretty proud of himself.
“I want to send Rush a bottle of vitamins,” said Begala in Politico. “We need him to stay healthy and loud and proud.”
Circus
Regardless of who’s winning and who’s losing, this isn’t going away anytime soon. Limbaugh will continue to talk about it. MSNBC and Fox will play this to the hilt. And Robert Gibbs isn’t going to be able to fend this off. He seems to like it so far. Let’s see how it wears on him.

The democrats have got it right. Look at what Rush has said.
He is a racist junkie!!! Look at what he has said in his remarks. Everyone should listen to him. Anyone with any brains that does listen to what he really says will see him for what he really is.
Its not pretty at all. He advocates all junkie’s serving time, as long as they are not fat upper income talk show hosts. According to rush everyone that does not have money is lower class and really should not even be able to vote.
I really hope everyone investigates him the more they look at him the sicker they will get.

Obama isn’t going to go on Fat Boy’s show. As far as Fat Boy’s concerned: let the dogs bark.
4. Carlos Navarro | 03.04.09
As a life-long fiscal conservative, I was appalled to learn that the CPAC had chosen Rush Limbaugh to deliver the keynote address at its 2009 Conference in Washington, DC.
“El Rusho,” admittedly, is a good entertainer, a comedian of sorts, but he is no political or social sage by any stretch of the imagination. .
Listen to one of his radio shows for its full three hours–the staged phone calls, the prepared scripts, the tortured statistics, the non-sequiturs, the twisted logic, the half-baked theories, the gasping changes of direction in mid thought, the out-of- context sound bytes, the wrong predictions, the baseless information, the name-calling, false piety, blustering, mockery, sniggering—and nothing of substance shows through.
Consider also his background–a first-semester college drop-out, a stadium beer vendor, a draft dodger (claimed he had an incapacitating boil on his ****), and a pill addict. .
John McCain had it right when he called Limbaugh a Bozo and then apologized, not to Limbaugh, but to Bozo, for making the comparison. (Fox News, 2005) Too bad that GOP Chairman Michael Steele lacks that kind of cojones. After rightly calling Limbaugh an “entertainer” and denouncing the blowhard’s “incendiary” and “divisive” rantings, the very next day he submissively, pusillanimously retracted his comments and, for all intent and purposes, turned the moral leadership of the GOP iver to the blowhard.
That conservatives hold Rush Limbaugh—and Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter and others lowbrows of their ilk—in such a high esteem shows how low their intellectual standards have plummeted. Small wonder that so many fiscal and free-thinking conservatives have bolted the CPAC and the Republican Party.
6. stacy | 03.04.09
Rush Limbaugh is a bonehead and un-american. Who wants their president to fail? I didn’t vote for George Bush but never ever did I want him to fail. He did that all on his own.
Hope for future

If Rush is the best the GOP have, they’re in worse trouble than we thought.
8. Maximo1561 | 03.04.09
As a lifelong Republican who voted twice for Bush (couldn’t stand the alternatives)I no longer consider myself a Republican. If this inflated ego loudmouth represents the party, I no longer wish to be associated with it. His focus on vicious petty politics is what let the Republicans drive off the cliff over the last 8 years.
9. Zebhead | 03.04.09
Bring it on Rush! He’s the only one in the arena that has a big enough set (and mouth) to say what he thinks without the political correctness filter. The only one on the Dems side that is as close to entertaining and likes to hear himself talk as much is the Ragin’ Cajun Carville. The rest of the Republicans are too busy posturing and worried about saying something that will come back to haunt them in 2012. The Republicans are totally floundering at the moment and are somehow managing to continuing to lose ground in the polls. How do you have a Socialist in the White House and you continue to lose the popularity game to him? That takes a lot of talent. The more press Rush gets the more outrageous he will get. This should be entertaining. It would be funny if the country wasn’t going down the crapper.
11. rosetea | 03.04.09
That will be day to watch when Obama gets humiliated in front of the millions.
12. Paddy Downey | 03.04.09
Seems to me the better canidate for the GOP would be Bill O’Reilly. Why Rush into this? Let’s hear a debate between Rush and O’Reilly and then take it to a vote…..it’s the American way. I say they run for office in four years O’Reilly for President and Rush as his vice…..now that would be a ticket. If nothing else it would force Obama into a debate with these two once and for all! Might be the only way it would happen.
15. Brandon | 03.04.09
Rush is just a radio show host! I think it’s a great idea for the Democrats to label Rush as the leader of the GOP because he is absolutely ridiculous. The list of controversies surround this man are long…he was addicted to opiates just 6 years ago! He broke the law, yet is considered the ‘leader’ of the GOP? Look at his biography, he dropped out of college after 2 semesters. This man is a joke, and the Democrats are using the fact that so many people listen to his show to make him the leader. As I said before, good. If the GOP knew what was good for them, they would come out saying that he is NOT the leader of the party. Who wants a former drug addict, controversy laden college dropout to be the head of their political party? Doesn’t seem that smart to me.

18. The Monday Nut | 03.04.09
I love it when people claim to be lifelong conservatives and then talk about voting for Obama. Everything he said in his campaign was ANTI-capitalist and threw mud in the face of conservatism. Please do not insult everyone’s intelligence, and look at the truth here. You may not like Limbaugh, but he has the largest radio audience EVER (and it is growing according to the Nielsen ratings). Taking him on is something you do at your own risk. Note that McCain did…and lost.
20. Tim | 03.04.09
By suggesting that appearing on his show is a good use of time for the elected leader of the United States, Rush may be depicting the very arrogance that has apparently found him in disfavor among younger demographics.
21. Jim Dandy | 03.04.09
I love Rush L., Joe the P., Sara P., Ann C., and the other conservative leaders. Watching and listening to them is like watching cartoons only more amusing. The brilliant political tactic of the Obama administration has more and more painted the picture of a Republican party that is led by comedians and showman who are even attacking one another. This approach allows the American people to see the joke that people who call themselves conservative have become. Enormous egoity and lust for attention and money fuels these people who are the Republican and conservative leaders. It is so much fun to watch. Keep it up!
22. DocVinoDinero | 03.04.09
When you said he should move, you had the correct first letter but the rest of the word was incorrect. Instead of Canada Rush should move to China. Of course that might start WWIII - never mind.
23. BenjaminF | 03.04.09
Rush would hate Canada. I think he might like Argentina-or Iran. No Feminazis in Iran. He could keep an Iranian wife barefoot and pregnant, well, pregnant if he can get Viagra in Iran, and keep her chained in the kitchen, where she could make him a couple of pails of fried chicken every night. He could divorce her if he got tired of her cooking by just saying “I divorce you” three times, and he’d be right next door to the biggest source of illegal drugs in the world, Afghanistan.
24. Faron Dee | 03.04.09
How can someone who never has to be accountable to the realities of life look bad against someone who must face those realities when making a decision? Any of our elected leaders must compromise in order for progress to be made — Rush Limbaugh does not. Any elected leader must juggle a whole host of realities and variables on the ground in reaching a decision that never has more than an imperfect chance of working — Rush does not.
But because far too many Americans now believe that reality is as close as the radio dial or television remote control, they will always believe that they “know what to do” better than any thinking elected official. Rush Limbaugh becomes their automatic hero, and we can expect them to drift collectively and agreeably through the heavens of cloud coo-coo land for many years to come!
25. IndependentVoter | 03.04.09
If the Republican Party is to have any chance of regaining power, they must:
1) Distance themselves from loud-mouthed loonies like Limbaugh
2) Stop catering to the religious right (remember, we don’t all have to be Christians)
3) Get government out of our homes (ease up on drugs and gays)
4) Get back to responsible government spending
If they did, there are a lot of voters like me that would gladly vote for them.
26. Richard Hed | 03.04.09
Anyone with an axe to grind has a big advantage if they don’t actually go out and chop wood with it. Limbaugh can talk up whatever storm he likes and push whatever ideas he thinks someone wil bite on. He doesn’t have to pass a bill or be accountable to anyone except his advertisers. Talk is cheap.

As a Democrat (an early supporter of the President), and an avid Civil Libertarian, I think it’s fine (and essential) for Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, et al, and any of the others in opposition to the President’s plans to do so in the manner they wish. However, the President is no longer a candidate for President…he IS the President, so he will not “debate” anyone. Having said that, I feel it would be productive for surrogates to debate the opposition on an on-going basis to discuss the points directly with the opposition’s audience… this would be healthy… and, if anything, it would serve as an educational experience for an audience like Limbaugh’s, which tend to hear only right-wing and more extreme opinions… NOT those which represent the perspectives of the majority of US citizens.
30. James | 03.04.09
Bum Rush Limbaugh makes over 30 million dollars a years.
He’s accountable to no one. He has an insatiable appetite for
money. He is the type of person, along with the bankers and stock brokers, who helped destroy the American economy.
By supporting corporate welfare,(tax breaks for the rich), on the backs of the middle and lower class workers of this country.
31. David Gardiner | 03.04.09
This Limbaugh guy is so damn right wing he makes Hitler look like a boy scout. I just don’t understand how or even why, the GOP would allow a pill popping junkie the “honor” as being the GOP mouth piece??
Bush and cronies just finished destroying the US economy in 8 short years along with our reputation around the globe….the GOP in the infinet wisdom now has given us Rush???
We we sink any lower??
32. cdbabe | 03.04.09
i’m with carlos navarro. if our side needs rush limbaugh as our representative, we’re in big trouble. And it seems that right now we’re playing right into the left’s hands. Whattheheck? Wake up conservatives. Let’s have the kinder and humbler intelligentsia such as Tom Sullivan representing us! Not the arrogant, self-aggrandizing sorts the likes of Rush, Hannity, O’Reilly, and Coulter. We also need to appeal more to the younger generation of Conservatives, and move away from some of these old guard commentators!

Mr. Hubble is not speaking the truth about Limbaugh. He is giving his opinion, and obviously from the left perspective. For Obama to take on Rush, a radio talk show host, is the dumbest political thing I can imagine. The net result is that Rush will EXPAND his radio listening audience. The net effect of attacking Rush will be to make him more powerful. More people will tune in “El Rushbo” is hear what this demon is all about and he will end up with more converts. They will also get the message, that is becoming apparent each day, that Obama and his team do not know what they are doing.

Amazing how uninformed commenters are here. Clearly none of them actually listen to Limbaugh or they would not be repeating the stupid lies about Rush that the drive-by media use every day to dismiss one of the clearest voices in America for true conservatism.
If you really believe the stereotypical clap-trap about Rush that you will hear from mainstream media critics rather than taking the time to learn for yourself, then you deserve the PhD in Ignorance offered up every day at the University of the Liberal Press.

As a Republican, I am appalled that Limbaugh has crowned himself head of the GOP. He is nothing but a loudmouth, fat barbarian who got caught doping up. If Michael Steele wants to remain as head of the RNC he’d better get some backbone or keep his mouth shut. If he doesn’t have the stones to deal with a bully like Limbaugh or a smart*** like Gingrich, he needs to find himself someone who can.
Bill Clinton left us with money in the treasury which George Bush spent and then racked up trillions in debt. We owe our *** to China and there is no way to pay it off! We had 8 years to do it right and we failed so don’t go off on Obama. We Republicans have only ourselves to blame.
48. bmovie | 03.04.09
Nothing matters.
If an election were held today, the numbers would shut him up for life.
What the Republicans need now, is not another blowhard entertainer or another “also ran” politician. We (Republicans and Democrats) need a businessman to steer us out of this Recession and to keep Obama’s ship on the right path.
Rush is just a distraction. Lead, follow, or get the **** out of the way.
50. kws | 03.04.09
It’s sad that the Democrats spend more time trying to combat a radio host than they are paying attention to governing the country. No wonder they are zig-zagging all over the place. It’s as if they have ADD.
51. Jeff Griffith | 03.04.09
I find it odd that in almost 30 posts not one really discusses Rush’s spoken word. No debate here. Only speculation on what they think he said. Only who they think he’s done. Only what they think he is.
52. Embarassed Dem | 03.04.09
As a lifelong democrat I’m continually embarassed at my democrat brothers and sisters who resort to personal attacks and character assasinations as oppossed to engaging in a spirited debate on an intellectual level. This is the same mode of operation that lost us control of the House and Senate a few years back and will be our downfall once again. Let us focus on the platform that got us to the dance and leave the school yard name calling where it belongs - pre-adulthood.
If we don’t believe that there are millions of Americans who, at some level, connect with Rush and if we believe, because we won the election, we can Pelosi our will on those people without consequences we are sadly mistaken.
53. biglarry | 03.04.09
To Dwight Tanner
You got it all wrong, Dwight. Rush is spellbinding in the same way that any demagogue is to an audience in need of having someone to pander to their basest instincts. It’s called “preaching to the choir”, made up of right-wing ditto-head rattlesnakes. Their venom is being stirred up daily by Rush and his sound-alikes. Who do you think all those investment bankers and mortgage salesmen were listening to on the radio while they were devising their financial con instruments and swindling their customers out of house and home with offers too good to refuse. Certainly not Al Franken or Barak Obama.
There are many historical and current examples of “spellbinders” like Rush. Hitler and Goebbels were able to attract millions with their speeches. Let us try to imagine a scenario in which Rush is born in 1900 in the then Germany. Given his megalomania, egocentrism, love of money and fame, bellicose personality, intolerance to everything different from his ideology, and questionable principles, it is easy to see him as one of the main propagandists of the Nazi Germany. The blacks and the liberals would be replaced by Jews, Gypsies and the mentally ill. I’m not exaggarating. I remember listenenig to Limbaugh making fun of a mentally disturbed black woman caller in the worst of ways in the early 90’s. I haven’t listened to the guy since, but I’m sure that books have been written amply illustrating his inhumanity. But look, maybe the guy has some redeeming qualities. Maybe we can use this unparalleled windbag of a person to solve our energy problems. Just ***** his belly a little, and the wind generated by the deflation could operate countless windfarms ad infinitum.

Thanks to W and his administration’s disastrous actions, the Republican party is in tatters- they are bankrupt in terms of new ideas, energy or good people. It is very worrisome that the Democrats do not have any serious opposition in much the same way that the Republicans were playing solo for 6 out of the last 8 years. Rush Limbaugh is no leader, he’s a sheep herder, and lord knows there are plenty of sheep.
The Clinton-Bush, and now, Obama policies have led to the wholesale looting of America and a massive transfer of wealth from the middle and upper middle class to the super rich and to those unknown entities that will be collecting the quadrillions of dollars that the financial fiasco will ultimately cost us and our great-great-great grandchildren. Limbaugh’s noises are just more mass media distractions with as much entertainment value as The Bachelor, Octomom, Arod or whatever the latest forgettable scandal is.
We tend to get what we deserve. If ignorance of simple facts about how our political and financial system functions is as rampant in the US as some polls suggest (only 42% of respondent in one poll could name the three branches of government), it’s no surprise that someone like Rush has an audience. What is surprising is that the remnants of the Republican party line up to lick his boots.

As a diehard conservative I am disgusted when I hear this garbage that Rush or Palin are the standard bearers of the GOP. If I see Rush in person I will dig out his eye with a spoon. The Dems are really out of control. Over the last few years, I have questioned my reasons for being a Democrat. These people are ruthless liars and cheats that are selling my country to the highest bidders. I am going to turn away from the Democrat Party forever. Since the Republicans seem to make more sense, I will vote Republican. This radical left stuff is troubling, and the stock market has been decimeted since the Democrat Party took over two years ago. Now with Obama - much, much worse. I’m over these people . . .

Never have I read more inacuracies as are in these comments. Rush does not want to be the leader of the GOP, he was addictive to pain medication from a back injury, not a cocain user like Obama, and the dems.,he is articulating the Reagan principles that made the party great and most of us agree with, he is excellent at explaining those principles, unlike most Rep. politicians. Obama can pass his socialist agenda without any Republicans and I hope he will have to. Touchy, feely democrats never have a grasp of issues, just feel and make it up as they go. Rush is wonderful at informing America about what the rest of the left media hides. Without their assistance, Obama would never have been in office tearing down America.

On 9/11 When America was in crisis all Americans rallied around President Bush.
His approval ratings shot up to over 90%. Republicans, Independents, Democrats and left wing liberals all rallied behind the President.
Now we are in an economic crisis as severe and dire as anything we have seen in our lifetime. Banks are going belly up, Americans are losing their jobs, the stock market continues to plunge, millions of homes are in foreclosure….
And some who call themselves “Americans” are showing their patriotic side by hoping that ” Obama fails”
It’s hard to believe that some “Americans” could stooped this low.
63. Nana | 03.04.09
Don’t underestimate this situation. Pill-popper, ne’er do well, regardless of what you call him, Limbaugh is an incendiary speaker with a gift for igniting the loyalty and aggression of an extremist right through his speech alone. Ridiculing and underestimating him could result in catastrophe. This is how Hitler started.
64. Maurice Rivard | 03.04.09
Rush is the best thing that could ever happen to the Democrats. If he’s the head of the GOP then they are in for some murky waters. As a divisive voice and well-known, he will lead the Republicans into never-never land. Can you imagine the crushed egos in Congress if Rush is telling them what they should be doing! And what about the skeletons in his closet….drug addictions conveniently covered-up by doctors and cash strategically placed. Why isn’t the media stirring this up? He’s an unelected entertainer answering to no one, especially the American voter.

“If you are going to pretend to be a “former” democrat, I would suggest that you use “Democratic Party” not “Democrat” Party. You pretty much give yourself away as pretending to be someone who you are not. Sorry dear.”
Susan said:
Honey, if you’re going to pretend to be a woman, you better come up with something more original than “MAGGY MAY.”

When borrowing a trillions dollars from the Chinese isn’t considered a major defeat and Nancy Pelosi is considered a serious leader instead of a cheerleader, there’s something seriously wrong. You’ve had your “I hate George Bush” feel good spending spree, now you have to make it work. The only thing that’s been accomplished so far is signing the credit card slip.
And speaking of credit cards, what’s the difference between Nancy Pelosi and a 19 year old cheerleader gleefully explaining to her father that she’ll be careful with her new Visa card?
…..Nancy Pelosi isn’t 19 years old. I’ll spend it wisely daddy really.
Did anybody watch Obama’s speach to congress and not feel totally embarrassed. Give me an “O”. Give me a “B”………
71. Appalled | 03.04.09
Is it really hard for people to figure out that this guy is just the Michael Moore of the republican party. This whole series of events is just showing the country that the democratic party is a bunch of children. They are trying to elevate this talk show clown to be the `leader of the republican party` because he is the only one they are able to easily criticize. The rest of the republicans want Obama to make good and deliver on all his empty promises of bipartisanship, so the powers that be choose to focus all the media attention on the one loud screaming clown. Have you noticed how no republicans will take seriously the white houses claims that rush has any importance. Did president bush start calling Michael Moore the leader of the democratic party in 2004 when Fahrenheit 911 came out? Even though at that time the only leader the democrats had was John Kerry for Christ`s sake. It is truly appalling that the office of the president of the united states has be relegated down to the level of squabbling with radio personalities. Why doesn`t Rahm just call into the show, that would be perfect?
72. Rush Kreening | 03.04.09
I agree with #56, I with you there.
Rush has hijacked the GOP and I’m hoping that he gets jacked up on the meds again before he flies the party into a skyscraper. But it’s certainly not all his fault–GOP necrosis has been underway for several years and it’s time to cut it away.
73. Larry | 03.04.09
I see a lot of name calling here. What I don’t see is anything of substance that says what he is saying about Obama is wrong. If you want to praise Obama, then *intelligently* defend his policies. Preferably before we all go broke.
74. Alfred | 03.04.09
Rush Limbaugh is the best example of what Republicans have to offer for the future of this country.
75. mike | 03.04.09
its plain to see that all who critize rush and resort to name calling no nothing about him other than what they hear or read about him from the news media or a bias friend
i read a lot of the coments and none are even close to the truth
like the good lord said you without sin cast the first stone
you all are hi and mighty behind computer and i don’t think you have listened to him jist mouth is all you are.

77. Nick | 03.04.09
Good Lord. And to think I once considered myself a Republican. The thing that scares me is that we are going to be a one party country. Rush is a big fat, self serving windbag. I don’t know why the dems are wanting the fairness doctrine. Letting Rush and Sean Hannity spew their venom has them in total control of the Senate, the House of Reps and the White House. Seems they should sit back and let the conservative talkshow hosts continue to turn the voters of America against the GOP.
78. Steve | 03.04.09
Don’t you just love it when liberals use mean spirited, low class insults to prove how highly educated and intelligent they are?
“Your a fat, drug taking racist Nazi.” And golly gee wiz, folks, those big words you use sure do make you sound smart.
And to those of you that rallied around the president that day…it’s the 8 years that you undermined his every move that lots of us remember.
79. Kiida | 03.04.09
Wow, it’s nice to see how clearly defined these lines are around here.
Rush is good at what he does, which is sit in front of a mic for a few hours and BS with the general population. He gets paid to incite people, and clearly from the reactions I’m seeing here, he does a VERY good job.
There are a few nuggets he’s produced over the years that I’ve been forced to agree with, most often when the entertainer side of him shuts off, and the normal human being comes through. Believe it or not, folks, it DOES happen. ![]()
We ALL need to remember something, though. He is paid to entertain, the same way “professional wrestlers” are. Does it make what they say in the ring true? Does it make their body-slams and chair attacks real? No, it does not. It’s for entertainment only. So are Rush Limbaugh’s monologues. Take them for what they’re worth, don’t make too much out of them.
As for all the references to his addiction to pain medication, wow… Just wow, guys. Real mature.
80. John Heavner | 03.04.09
Limbaugh double-dog-dared Mr. Obama to appear on his show for “a debate of ideas and policies”.
Maybe he missed it, but we recently had a debate of ideas and policies. It went on for almost two years, and the Republicans lost, bad. It was called The Election.
I once voted Republican, but grew I tired of George Bush, and of the religious right and the in-your-face arrogance of the GOP. I would be willing to consider voting GOP again, but not until the maniacal rhetoric stops. Limbaugh is an embarrassment to the party.
If they don’t move to the left some, the GOP will continue to be marginalized. Americans have outgrown Limbaugh and his ilk.
81. Independent Thinker | 03.04.09
I am neither a life long republican nor democrat. I am an intelligent person who votes for the available candidate most suited for the job. Rush Limbaugh is an idiot, plane and simple. “President” Obama, as an intelligent, honest and articulate man, who would never consider a debate with Limbaugh, why should he? President Obama need not lower his standards.
In regards to the republicans or democrats who feel a need to degrade and belittle others in order to make their points, shame on you. I am an American, not a republican or a democrat, simply an American. As such, I believed Mr. Obama was the best choice in this last election. I will support him, and our Government providing they move in directions I feel are prudent. As they are our elected officials, we should “ALL” support this government in ways which will help. Simply following party mantra doesn’t cut it any more.
Why is it that intelligent people turn into neanderthal thinkers when they feel “their party” is in jeopardy? Sad…..a truly sad state of affairs. We have a new president whom about half of this country voted for to lead them in the coming 4 years. Instead of bickering like children with no logical thought, let’s try constructive criticism at opponents when it is appropriate, and fellowship with the opposite party when the circumstances warrant.
This bull headed, “only our side can be right about everything” attitude is neither helpful, nor logical. Rush Limbaugh is an idiot. I feel sorry for those who listen to him, and applaud his ideas. They are truly in need of help.
At least we have a real “leader” in the White House now. Let’s let him lead. The rest of use can either follow or get out of the way.
82. Don | 03.04.09
Rush Limbaugh is a bombastic, pompous, and egocentric blowhard. Ego maniacal would be a better definition of him. If he should ever be elected to national office, this long-time Republican and Navy veteran, would “exit stage right or left” to Canada or any other country than the USA. The hate that emanates from Limbaugh is reminiscent of a few other ego maniacal world historical figures that I care not to discuss here.
83. John Henson | 03.04.09
All this Rush Limbaugh talk is fun, and I enjoy painting Republicans into the right-wing nut corner. But, we’ve made the point. Let’s get off this distraction.
84. Todd Miller | 03.04.09
Based on the posts, many haven’t spent sufficient time listening to Rush, and have gained their information only through what has been reported on the news. Pay attention to all of the content. Rush wants policies that push America in a socialist direction to fail. Period. Every Free Enterprise, Free Market loving American should feel the same way. What is so difficult to understand. Socialism has failed everytime it is tried, no matter who is in charge.
85. T. Haugen | 03.04.09
I trace the decline of the Republican party to the day when Rush Limbaugh eclipsed William F. Buckley as its guiding intellectual force. That was when showmanship replaced thought, when hysteria replaced debate, when fabrication replaced research and when integrity became a quaint anachronism. Rush is a true leader for a population whose collective intellect has been stunted by too much TV….
86. Jordan Hill | 03.04.09
Who said that Canadians want him in Canada or would even let him in? I don’t think he qualifies for immigration to Canada under our points system. Who says, even if he got in to Canada, any Canadians would listen to him? Who says that Mr. Limbaugh would even consider Canada with our universal health care plan and single pay funding of it? That socialist garbage that he spouts. Leave us out of it. He’s yours. you keep him. Well, on second thought, we do have a prescription drug care system funded by the government.
87. Richard | 03.04.09
I don’t like Rush, but hate obama’s agenda even more. Seem’s as if America does not trust him by selling all their stock. I think **** blame Bush(sic) as Clinton was blamed for 9/11, doesn’t the same standards apply (:
88. Marc Leonard | 03.04.09
Rush could be dangerous if the circumstances allowed it. I could easily see him advocating the wholesale deportation of Mexicans living illegally in the United States via boxcars to the border, should the depression spiral out of control and a loaf of bread cost $12 and so forth, a la Weimar Germany. As we live in fairly easy times - no plagues decimating entire towns, no civil war, no nuclear fallout, no famine - his bark is generally just that, a bark with no bite.
The Republican Party is the party of hatred and anger, where there is sort of a tacit, unspoken agreement that some people deserve to die. As such, it is the party of lesser intellects. True wisdom can never really manifest in a Republican position, so the intellectuals will always be demonized by their slower, meaner fellows on the right, of who Limbaugh is the champion. A crisis calls for leadership, we have been blessed historically to have someone kind and intelligent in the White House, rather than someone repellent and vapid, such as his recent opponents.
I would love to see Obama on Rush’s show - provided Rush agreed not to interrupt him. He should be careful what he asks for, Obama (or Clinton) would eviscerate him.
89. Ryan Heart | 03.04.09
Rush is a mindless sound-byte-aholic.
Exhibit A:
Why didn’t Rush wish failure on Bush’s Bank Bail Out Plan? Duh …Because he is an incredulous right wing hypocrit!
Obama is smart enough not to cast pearls under swine!
90. Dwight | 03.04.09
Limbaugh is asking for a batte with the man who’s already won the war. Why would Obama want to stoop to his level? The pendulum is swinging the other way. I wouldn’t be surprised if that pig is off the air two years from now.
91. R B in the M E | 03.04.09
I have tried to listen to Rush. Usually I last 5 minutes before changing the channel. Who really needs that ****? Change the channel America!
92. Dan Hart | 03.04.09
Funny you liberal chuckleheads spout about Limbaugh’s pain pill addiction but find no fault in the “Chosen Ones” self proclaimed drug involvement. Rush may have dropped out of college but even he knows America is composed of 50 States, not 57 as proclaimed by Harvard graduate Obama! You Liberals need not fear a debate between Limbaugh and Obama, Obama’s to smart to challenge Limbaugh without a teleprompter! By the way, the stock market is tanking with just talk about the “Porkulous Plan”…can’t wait to see what happens when it gets ratified! Yes we can!!!
93. topgun | 03.04.09
RUSH IS A DUMB-***! Let the republicans go off that cliff. No doubt they’ll be back sometime in the future, and leave the American people another MESS to clean up!
94. CK | 03.04.09
These comments are shameful. Every single commenter who has claimed that Rush Limbaugh is a Nazi should be embarrassed (and perhaps should ask themselves if they even know what a Nazi is). Every commenter who has declared with such an utterly staggering level of stupidity and with such a foolish blanket statement that the democratic party are cocaine addicts, should be ashamed of themselves. If, in one hundred years, one were to look back at this comment board and judge the quality of the people of our times, what could we possible expect them to think? How could they not be ashamed and embarrassed if in fact they are our decedents? Until we the people are able to speak intelligently and, yes, lovingly, towards each other without the sole ambition of proving our cause, until then, we will all be wretched.
For what its worth, and in the context of this comment board, it can clearly be of little value I suppose, Republicans are smarter than adopting a man like Rush Limbaugh as their party’s leadership, this is simply a simple-minded ploy by democratic leadership. However, it is alarming that so many would rally to his obscene call and that others, elected officials no less, who cower before and cater to Rush is jarring. The fact that so many would be so willing to criticize Obama with such vitriol when he clearly inherited a disastrous situation and the effects of his policy are impossible to forecast at this point reveals that you are like-minded with Rush, that you prefer the president of our country to fail, fully aware of the harm this will wreck on our country and our future, for fear that if he succeeds, your party’s esteem will suffer in the next election. GROW UP! and stop giving me so many reasons to be so ashamed of a country that I passionately love!
95. Ian Farmer | 03.04.09
Hooray at least 70 people who have seen Limbaugh for what he is … a clown. We used to enjoy his show for its entertainment but now he just rants with no logic and has got far too venomous. Does the GOP realise the damage this is doing - even if it is a stop gap. In the UK the Labour party were in the wilderness from 1987 - 1997 mainly because they had leaders who lacked credibility.
96. Mark L | 03.04.09
if Rush is the true leader of the Republican party, he should seriously run for president. If Republicans like him and agree with him so much, this is a logical step. For the record, I try to listen to Rush whenever I can, just to see what he has to say. Normally it takes less than 5 minutes for him to twist an issue, make up a lie about some consequence of the Democratic approach, and then act like this approach will be the downfall of the world. It would be funny if so many people didn’t take him seriously. What ever happened to the William Buckley brand of conservatism? Calm, reasoned arguments that were free of emotion and half truths. That’s the way back for the GOP - too bad they would rather woo the Joe the Plumbers of the world with jingoism and scapegoats.
97. LSOBUR | 03.04.09
I am a first generation immigrant. I went to school here. I worked hard and paid for my own college (BS and Master’s). I started a career. What else is new, I still work hard and have a successful career and a lovely family. Politically, I’ve always been independent, always vote on issues but not on idealogy alone (i.e. voted for both parties). I was once very facinated by Rush L so I listend to him on the radio every morning during my commute. After several months, I’d made up my own mind about him: He’s an idiot.
Thanks for reading.
98. WhatAHoot! | 03.04.09
It’s kind of funny listening to all of you bash Rush because of his opinions when during the election both Biden & Obama expressed their grossly “false & inaccurate” opinions about McCain & Palin. It’s called “RADIO” & “POLITICS” & “ENTERTAINMENT”! Get over it! Republicans: listen to whomever you want to & vote your heart during the next election. The only way to shut the Dems up is to get rid of their leaders that put America in this situation in the first place. Bush didn’t do it! His administration didn’t do it! Check out Barney Franke & his ignorance of the home loan fiasco! Now most of us are upside down in our mortgages & we’re looking at someone else but us to blame! What a bunch of whining, boring, ignorant MORONS! Rush is wealthy, more popular than Obama, & for that you hate him. TOO BAD!!! HAHAHAHA! Dems hate Rush, Reps hate Obama, & politically correctness will destroy America!
99. JGL | 03.04.09
I listened to the C PAC speech that Rush gave the other day and thought that he perfectly articulated what it is that I think, few notes if any, he spoke for over an hour and I agreed with everything he said. He is very good at what he does because he speaks from his heart first not from a political strategists laundry list. He has nothing to fear because he is true to himself and his foundation beliefs.
Rush is just taking a conservative common sense stand. Someone has to step out and say what needs to be said, our country has been run improperly, by the Dems and the Repubs, he calls them both out. But have no doubt he is a Capitalist not a Socialist, he understands our country is great becuse of our Constitution and Capitalism not Socialism.
No one on this board runs their life like our country has been run, if you have your life is in a shambles. If your life is a shambles, what are you going to do from this moment on?
Don’t be mired in the minutia, see clearly, develope a goal and move towards it. Rush see’s clearly.
100. Mark | 03.04.09
Steele apologized because Rush has so many reporters. Steele calculated that politically, he can’t afford to lose that many supporters. This says something very sad and regrettable about the Republican party. Rush is right about one thing: it’s not complicated for the Republican party to take back the country. All they need is the right candidate. Unfortunately, the voters in the Republican party support people like Rush, O’Reilly, Palin, etc., and will not fully support a serious and responsible candidate. The heart of the republican party, it’s base, is rotten with hubris, self-indulgence, and anger. Until that changes, Rush will be a natural spokesman for the party.
101. WhatAHoot! | 03.04.09

Too bad you guys didn’t get the gene. I guess you’ll have to post your Michelle Obama posters above your beds & pray to whatever Pelosi idol you bought from your local 7-eleven! Oh remember, we shouldn’t own guns either!
Just what the **ll are you even doing in the great state of Texas anyways?
102. PaulG. | 03.04.09
Rush Limbaugh speaks for many people, including me. No, I do not blindly follow. I happened to already think what he voices. You people calling him names do not listen to him, nor are you interested in the exchange of ideas. He has ideas, you just don’t like them. They are ideas of freedom, equality, and liberty rather than Obama’s ideas of socialism, class warfare, and taxation.
Further, lately most of Rush’s ideas have been philosophical in nature rather than political. He is taking on the heads of the GOP as much as he is taking on Obama, for philosophical reasons. They have veered away from conservatism, and for that he has been whacking them. THAT is why he has suddenly become so important to the GOP party: he is the only person of prominence who has dared to spell out why McCain lost and that conservatives need to wrest control of the party again.
You people don’t get it. You support Mr. Obama, whose goal is to take the fruits of our labor and give them to someone else. Sorry. He can’t have it. We producers are going on strike; that is why the stock market is tanking and will continue to do so. Keep bashing Rush without LISTENING. You will continue to participate in economic ruin and the loss of liberty. I will not.
103. JGL | 03.05.09
THE ULTIMATE CHESS GAME
The Democratic party is strategically tagging Rush and the Republican party together, evidenced by the President himself commenting on and nameing Rush specifically. Why would a President lower himself and call out a media personality? Why would he legitimize Rush? This is a tactic.
The reinstallation of the welfare state should reawaken a majority of Americans for the next round of elections.
This is the ultimate chess game and moves are being calculated and made.
104. Carole Clarke | 03.05.09
for #84 Todd Miller: We had 8 years to put conservative values into effect and ended up with no one watching the wolves. No oversight on Wall St and the banks, the housing industry flattened and the auto industry tanked. Why were these conservative values not put into effect to prevent trillions of dollars in debt and a war in Iraq that may have been a personal family vendetta against an Iraqi honcho that unwisely threatened a former U.S. President? Blind loyalty only passes muster if you are successful. The Democratic administration is now overspending to overcorrect the financial debacle but you can bet alot of those greedy earmarks in the budget are Republican. No politician can resist feeding at the trough. Our national pendulum is swinging wildly back and forth and I don’t know what it will take to bring us back into balance.
105. Tyler | 03.05.09
Interesting how comments against Rush use such words and ****, idiot, blowhard, etc. And yet, you’ll never hear Rush using any of those words or personally attacking individuals like that. You will definitely hear him attack the ideas and policies that he disagrees with.
Remove the Democrat/Republican and Liberal/Conservative labels and names in all of the comments here and ask yourself who the real mean and hateful people are. You’ll find all the vitriol flung at Rush here and virtually none thrown at Obama. So Rush is right! Republicans and conservatives love people. We don’t see people in “groups” to be pigeonholed into sets of victims to be taken care of by the government. We just see people with limitless potential if the government will get out of their way and stop propping them up with crutches that just cripple them.
Ask yourself why the Obama team seems more obsessed with taking Rush down than they are interested in addressing the daily decline in the market, the value of our assets. Even if you’re not in the market, it affects the general economy in all respects and rather than putting into place policies that will return confidence to investors, the Obama team continues to pick a fight with a talkshow host to divert everyone’s attention while they preside over the bonfire on Wall Street.
And before you go off about how Bush created this mess, consider the fact that the Democrats won the House, the money spending arm of Congress, two years ago and just kept spending money right along with pork loving Republican legislators. While ignoring their duty to provide oversight, they continued to spend money. And now they blame the markets and propose to spend more money, pretending that government spending can bring about prosperity.
What is that definition of insanity? Persisting in the same action expecting a different result? Yeah. Taxing us more and spending more got us into this mess. So now the plan is to tax us more and spend more to get us out of this mess. Insanity! Crazy! Bonkers!
107. Hope | 03.05.09
Why not give third party politics a chance? We need some competition to combat this rampant socialism and dearth of individual responsibility which both major parties support. Politics is a waste of time when both parties have basically the same ideas. Some say it’s impossible to reduce government once it’s grown so large, however, through faith in good, all things are possible. “With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.” Our country became great through faith in God, and in turning to faith in God, rather than in man, it will shine again.
108. RHarrisonScott | 03.05.09
Tyler clearly pinpoints the problem here. The left lately seems to focus more on character assassination than substance. A good number of the comments to this piece attest to that.
Limbaugh focuses on getting people to think without marginalizing, trivializing, or demonizing the people expressing a philosophy he disagrees with. If you listen to his speech before CPAC, not once did he attack Obama. In fact, he went out of his way to praise the man.
109. Carole Clarke | 03.05.09
Obama is very new on the national scene - shoot he was new on the state scene. I don’t like that he’s hired all the old Clinton cronies but new guys have to take direction from the old guys. If Limbaugh gets up on a national podium and shoots his mouth off, he’d better be prepared for incoming! In four years, Obama WILL have a history we can take legitimate potshots at and some kind of results from current actions. As an American I hope our economy and business take an upturn and as a Republican, I’d like to see a clear definition between conservative methods and liberal methods so we can tout the good of our conservative ideas.
Its not Obama’s fault that Wall Street went out the window, the banks pretty much embezzled their worth, collapsing the housing market and auto industry. Asian workers are traipsing back to their home villages because no one is buying. Obama did not make those decisions, Bush did. If you concocted the kool-aid you better be ready to drink it. We had 8 years and screwed the pooch. Not Limbaugh’s fault, not Obama’s - we all had a hand in it.
110. gene ortega | 03.05.09

111. sailor | 03.06.09
Obama will never debate Rush because he is worthless without a teleprompter. He is a puppet for the liberal extremists. The liberal extremists just want power and money…democrats are their pawns.
Rush is not the face of republicans, he is the face of the millions of like minded conservatives. Consevatives are not sheep like Democrats, conservatives research the issues, think about the future and the consequences.
Liberals are destroying this country with so called “change”. There is no change, it is all the same old criminals, liars and cheats that have been in the Democratic party for years. If you say ” all politicians are crooks” that is a cop-out. There is not one Democrat or Obama supporter that knows what was in the Stimulus Bill or the other 5-6 bills that Democrats have snuck through in the first 30 days. What happened to the 5 days of public review of every bill promised by Obama? Why is his administration attacking the very core of the Constitution (Fairness Doctrine=silence conservative talk).
So Rush wants Obama’s Socialist agend to fail? I want that too…so does every real conservative in this country!
All you Obama supporters have been blinded by issues that have nothing to do with the health of our country. Take a hard look at Majority Democratic states and cities…those are the ones with proverty, rascism and corruption.
Is that what you want for the rest of the country?
There are no successful liberal media personalities on radio, why? Because you can not sustain a show based in lies, half-truths and whinning.
Why are the newspapers in this country failing? Because the only people who read and care about the news are conservatives…and they are tired of buying left leaning news media.

Russ is articulate and persuasive, both traits that he shares with another fine speaker, Barack Obama. His ability to use the medium is more valuable than any message he chooses to convey. While I don’t share his views, I do recognize that he is a spellbinder.
