To commemorate Earth Day, President Obama will tour and meet with workers at Trinity Structural Towers , the former Maytag plant which now houses a green manufacturing facility that produces towers for wind energy production, in Newton . The White House says, this is a "perfect example of how a community can rebuild a local economy with investments in clean energy and efficiency."

It’s Earth Day! Obama and Limbaugh celebrate it differently
By Jimmy Orr | 04.22.09
Just in case you were wondering, President Obama and Rush Limbaugh will not be holding a joint Earth Day press conference today.
It would be quite newsworthy, but perhaps it was a scheduling problem or the stars just didn’t line up this year. Maybe next.
But, don’t worry, each will join — according to CNN — one billion people around the planet in celebrating the annual event.
Is this Heaven?
Obama heads out to Iowa (or Heaven as some have called it). But not Dyersville, the home of the “Field of Dreams“. Instead the president commemorates the Earth in Newton, where he will visit a green manufacturing facility that produces towers for wind energy production.
Explains the White House press office:
“Iowa , a leader in wind energy, is a perfect example of how a community can rebuild a local economy with investments in clean energy and efficiency. Trinity employs dozens of former Maytag employees and is part of the revitalization of a town hard hit by the closing of the Maytag plant.”
Following the tour of the facility, President Obama will discuss his energy plan. Says the White House, Obama will discuss “promoting clean energy innovation to help end our dependence on foreign oil, creating millions of new jobs, and preventing the worst consequences of climate change.”
The president wants $15 billion annually for 10 years directed to the renewable-energy industry.
“Go back to this plant in 10 years and, once we get this comprehensive energy and climate legislation through, they will see a dramatic rise in the number of employees,” said an Obama energy aide to the Des Moines Register. “We’re not suggesting we would completely fill this hole, but we’re making dramatic improvements and steps in the Obama administration to get there.”
Limbaugh
Meanwhile, the conservative talk show host is honoring the Earth by celebrating coal, the car, plastic bags, and light bulbs.
Last week, in preparation for the event, Limbaugh said, “Normally, those of us with sanity sit Earth Day out, while schools frighten kids with apocalyptic tales of the earth being destroyed, because we enjoy a high standard of living.”
But Limbaugh came through this morning and singled out “pioneers who have contributed to the well-being of the planet”.
In what he calls a “solemn tribute” he honors a man named Gordon Dancy. Who’s he?
“He invented the first high-density plastic grocery bag, which can handle up to 40 pounds of stuff. That singular invention has benefited our daily life on earth in multitudinous ways,” he explained.
But don’t forget the coal industry. Something he says needs recognition.
“We salute a group that’s unmarked by history: the first coal miners in America — farmers, selling it by the bushel. Their efforts grew into an industry that fuels America’s energy needs. To the coal miners of America, past and present: Happy Earf [sic] Day.”
Whether you buy into it or not, is there a better band to listen to today than Earth, Wind, and Fire? Enjoy…

Rush Limbaugh isn’t a conservative, he’s a looney. Get over yourself Rush, and start thinking about the Country, the planet, the future.

I can’t afford to go Green, because I can’t afford the Prices things will cost. I lived in California during the Enviromental Revolution, lost my business due to all out crazy laws. Moved back to NC and now its here! where do I move to next.
5. r3loaded | 04.22.09
Wow, I know he’s Limbaugh and all, but he really comes off as an egoistic ass with this. He’s the type who’s really hammering the nail in the coffin for the Republican Party at the moment.
6. ignorance | 04.22.09
The far right has reduced themselves to being nothing more than anti-left. The fact that this caricature of a man would spend time demonizing Earth Day, a positive event that simply calls for some consideration for the state and health of our physical communities, is quite telling of his intentions. I see no quicker way to distance the GOP from young people than to cultivate this sort of attitude.

Thanks, Obama, for trying to save the fragile earth that has been ravaged by the greed of former leaders.
8. GQ | 04.22.09
Thanks Rush!
I am 58 years old and first heard about the “green house effect” when I was in the fourth grade. We couldn’t change the climat if we wanted to. It is time for all of us to ignore the enviro wackos once and for all.
Today, I will turn on all of my light bulbs and spray a can in the direction of the Sun.
9. BK | 04.22.09
Finally some common sense from a Republican. Albeit humorous, hopefully it will jarr some from there weird fixation (religious)on making the earth a deity and realize that it is here to provide us with what we need. This helps a understand that there is a “balanced” approach to taking care of what we have been given. The religious extremism of the “environmentalist” and the extremists of greedy “users” are both bad!
10. Write | 04.22.09
People like Rush are always trying to make this an issue of crazy environmentalists bent on the destruction of our way of life when really it is just average folks that want clean air and a good future for our kids without polluted water and dependence on fuels that do pollute. Who cares if burning coal causes global warming. We should care that it releases gases known to cause cancer and adds mercury to the water to the piont I can only eat the fish I catch once a month to be safe.

How did Obama get to Iowa, I’m assuming he walked since it is earth day. No need to fly a single man to this location, right???
13. teabagger | 04.22.09
As always, our beloved Rush is in the avant garde when it comes to protecting our precious American freedoms. I, and all my teabagging brothers, will never relinquish our right to fill up landfills with as much plastic as we want.
I only hope that, soon, he will begin another crusade: restore our freedom to smoke on airplanes. The idea that there’s anything wrong with cigarette smoke is another socialist plot, shamelessly promoted by the liberal media.
14. John | 04.22.09
We need to respect this holy day for the world’s largest growing theocratic movement…enviromentalism! I will personally hug a tree and devote my life to it and thank it for the saving qualities it gives me. I think we are not doing enough to save the earth and we should ban the largest green house gas of them all water vapor!
15. CDW | 04.22.09
It’s great to watch the leaders of the Republican Party continue to put the nail in the coffin. I give a lot of props to Rush for everything he and other prominent Republicans (Sarah Palin) did to get Obama elected!
Thanks!

Here’s an interesting thought process:
1) Consider adding motor oil to the water in your bathtub. Would you want to sit in it? Burn 10 pounds of coal in your bathroom, and sit there while breathing in the fumes. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?
2) Increase the bathtub size to the size of a swimming pool. Add a proportionate amount of oil to it and enjoy. Similarly, increase the bathroom size to that of your own home.
3) Now, increase the pool to a lake, and your home to your town.
I think you see where this is leading. It is also why we need to be cognizant of how we manage our waste and byproducts due to what we call “progress”.
Also, its nice that Rush is saluting the plastic bag. It is a great invention, capable of moving large volumes of goods from one location to another. The only issue is that we need to find a way to manage them when we are no longer using them. We could always deliver them directly to Rush’s house. I’m sure he’d be happy to have them.
18. Jimmy | 04.22.09
Just cause you plant a tree in a different location doesnt mean its producing more oxygen…. Need to plant seeds not plants that have already grown.
19. GG | 04.22.09
Why are people like Rush so threatened by change? There’s no reason why we can’t have a good standard of living and a thriving economy and STILL protect this beautiful planet of ours.
BTW Rush…Gordon Dancy’s daughter Kristen Brown is an environmental consultant who is introducing a line of reusable grocery bag sets. She says that before her father’s death, he realized the environmental problem plastic bags had created and started a program to recycle them.

The great gift of renewable energy it keeps on giving. I wonder if thin film solar panels will make high rises the next big power source! Will that create an excess gravitational pull or create too mush heat in a city? If not then that could be the next direction of this grand free energy source! Thanks God for the wonderful gift of life and renewable energy!

Thank you to the Obamas for being aware that this earth has just so many resources to support a huge global population. Also the need for personal gardens to nourish our bodies and souls.
The plastic products that we use are finding their way into our waterways, and to the oceans. Breaking up into small pieces that are eaten by birds and fish to their harm and ultimately ours.
To not take care of the only planet we have to live on is sinful, selfish, and ignornant, which describes Mr. Limbaugh perfectly.

Has everyone not noticed that the “Head office” has put us in a greater debt then at any other time in the history of this nation???
I understand we have be come a nation of “buck passing whiners” but give me a break when will common sense show its head again????
Earth day is a nice way to suggest that we can do things to save the planet…but I truly think we face a greater threat to the world by having idiots and fools running a super power then by the size of the average family carbon foot print.
26. CDW | 04.22.09
@David - I don’t know, but it is nice to see people finally seeing the light through the trees.
Perhaps it’s the extreme right, no compromise, no tolerance, ideals that are pushing the more moderate people away.
Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Point Blank. End of Story. He makes millions of dollars because of his inflammatory remarks. The more outrageous he acts the more his blind followers listen… And he profits. It’s his own little inside joke.
27. GG | 04.22.09
“When did readers - or at least commenters - at the Monitor swerve so far left?”
I respectfully disagree. I don’t think valuing the environment is a “left” thing. I’ve voted for both Repubs and Demos, and I know quite a few diehard conservatives (several in my own family) who believe that we have to start doing a better job of protecting this planet.
There were a few “voices crying in the wilderness” before this whole economic debacle who said we were headed for a fall, but we called them Cassandras. Turns out they were right. We can’t afford to make the same mistake with this planet. Once resouces are gone, they are GONE.
29. Jacob | 04.22.09
When the argument is between sustainability/environmental health(Obama) and not really caring(Limbaugh), the debate is either dead or just insane.
30. Bojnik | 04.22.09
Hooray for both!
I love plastic grocery bags, but I must say the ones in Japan can hold about twice as much weight. In America I use paper. We could work on this.
Isn’t it funny, though, how environmentalists had such a hard time deciding whether the cutting down of oxygen-producing trees was worse than than burying plastic bags? There was no concensus in the 80s and little ground gained in the 90s. Now we know renewable is better.
And hooray for more wind power and trees in Iowa, but the quote from Jimmy is right on:
“Just cause you plant a tree in a different location doesnt mean its producing more oxygen…. Need to plant seeds not plants that have already grown.”
That’s hilarious!

I’m one of the former Republican moderates.
I “defected” to the Democratic Party for two reasons: First, even before the primaries, I read “The Audacity of Hope” and realized our now-President actually THINKS things through and second, the phrase “Drill here and Drill now” by his Republican opponent solidified my “defection”. For now, I’m staying a Democrat and supporting our President’s efforts.
32. Craig | 04.22.09
You people are idiots. If you listen to Rush and not the soundbites that the Daily Show spits out, you’d know that he does this to rile the left. And apparently it’s working. I’m not saying that he can be mentioned in the same breath as Rachel Carson, but he is definitely not as far out there on the environmental right as Miss Carson was on the environmental left. Lightnen up and educate yourselves.
33. Victor1000 | 04.22.09
It makes me concerned that all media and many politicians report that climate change is a foregone conclusion. I do see where many scientists still believe this is a theory and not a fact, and still requires much study. I once had a professor who required all theories to start with, “At our current level of ignorance, we believe the following to be true…”
34. Candy | 04.22.09
It is unfortunate that Limbaugh’s following chooses not to view him as the antagonist he truly happens to be. Hence, his ludicrous way of making money.

One third think Bush did a great job.
One third don’t care if their kid’s toys contain lead.

Thank god for Rush Limbaugh. By being such an arrogant contrarian, who obnoxiously spews plainly ignorant nonsense about environmental issues all over the global media, he has destroyed the credibility of the anti-environmental global warming deniers and helped build a broad-based consensus around substantive environmental protection measures, and a grassroots push for greener energy and industry. Thank you Rush and keep up the good work. You have accomplished in a few months what the political left couldn’t do in a decade or more.
45. Simplicio T. Soriao | 04.22.09
When Vice President Al Gore claimed that the beginnings of the Internet started with him, the assertion made me skeptical as to what he would assert next. And then, out of the blue, he came out to publish his book, “The Convenient Truth, became the recipient of a Nobel Prize for advocating the fight against global warming, and faded for a while. I hope this is the last hurrah for a professional politician whose quest for the presidency has been insatiable if not overly obsessive.
Mr. Limbaugh must focus his attention on him given the problems the latter caused for the Republican party. A flash in the pan, he is. But with the pan gone, all that is left is nothing but the empty flash.

Really? We certainly changed the ozone layer. We almost made it disappear.
As for environmentalism being left/right, isn’t it odd that the words “conservative” and “conservationist” have the same root?
48. teabagger | 04.22.09
GQ (#8) is so dead-on to write “We couldn’t change the climat (sic) if we wanted to”…but fails to draw the — to us teabaggers — obvious implications. In the 1950’s and 60’s, the liberal media told us there was an atmospheric condition in Los Angeles called “smog.” They started spreading junk-science ideas — e.g. auto and factory emissions had something to do with the problem. The (as GQ calls ‘em) “enviro-wackos” went nuts, created a public hysteria. The result? Socialist legislation limiting our freedom in re cars and factories.
Easy to predict what happened next. The liberal media served up more Koolaid — claimed the L.A. smog condition had gotten better. Since GQ’s “we couldn’t change the climat (sic) if we wanted to” is so obviously true, only one rational conclusion can be drawn: the liberal media has successfully brainwashed millions –millions! — of people in Southern California.
Sound familiar, teabaggers?…thousands of lying scientists, liberal media, a public concerned about health and the future. Go, GQ! You’ve got the inside scoop! Burn your lights! Empty your aerosol can at the unblinking sun!
49. blah | 04.22.09
Am I the only one that remembers when plastic bottles and bags were marketed as being biodegradable and environmentally friendly to gain popularity? As for people being sick due to the “environment”. People need to read labels on what is put on their skin in lotions, shampoos, etc. If skin did not absorb what is put on it, then there would not be patches with medication. Read the labels of food items as well. We consume so much sugar as a nation. Too much of anything is bad for any body to handle. Air pollution: I read in a local newspaper that tires cause a lot of pollution as they disentigrate and the particles are in the air. Something to think about when out walking or jogging along a roadside.I am not a tree hugging hippie because I like my cheeseburger as much as the next person but I think that people can take responsibility for their bodies and stop blaming others.
50. NObama | 04.22.09
Instead of making this a political or finger pointing discussion - read the facts about “green energy”. The question you need to ask yourself is; Am I willing to pay 8-10 times more for energy generated from wind and solar?
Get educated - then comment. Otherwise you just sound like a whiney liberal with nothing really to say.

Why are people such leemings. Earth Day is cover for a political movement that is anti-American and anti-God. You can be concerned about pollution and take action to reduce or eliminate your impact on the planet, without buying into this “The Earth is Our Mother” propaganda. By the way, carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, it is necessary for life, so let us focus on the real pollution problem.

56. Dan | 04.22.09
I’m not sure why any republican would actually listen to Rush for more than validation of their own ideology. Seriously, it’s like a stoner getting their arguments from High Times and then calling every other source of information propaganda and lies because it may differ with High Times.
The man actually used to be entertaining because he was able to take a few facts and string them together to make a brand-new fact without anyone noticing the flaws in logic. The political speaker’s version of David Copperfield. Then, just as Howard Stern turned into **** in order to please a vast audience, Rush did the same. (I’m sure all the wives and drugs didn’t help, but that’s all forgiven if your a republican.)
Anyway, as I’ve watched the republican party degenerate into nothing other than an angry mirror of the democratic party, I’ve had no choice but join up with the independents, extreme liberals, progressives, and pretty much everyone else on the planet and watch the myriad factions of republicans attack each other like competing tribes of cannibals. All the while blaming anyone but their own little faction.
It’s kind of like watching that show *******, where kids intentionally do idiotic things and hurt themselves for the audience’s entertainment.

You are misinformed. The Obama stimulus and related spending is much smaller than the amount Bush spent on the Iraq war, which was $500 billion to $1 trillion a year, for six years. The reason you don’t know that is Obama is up front about spending and puts it in the budget. Bush kept the Iraq spending out of the budget. Kind of like writing checks and not recording them in your check register.

This should be Save the Humans day. Get real and you get more buy in.

Bags manufactured from hemp-fibre can easily be as strong and durable as plastic or paper grocery bags.
Making a hemp-fibre shopping bag does not require any trees to be cut down, or any plastics to be manufactured. A field full of hemp-fibre can be produced in one growing season (as opposed to 30+ years for a forest of paper-producing trees). Plus, it’s cheap as dirt, compared to other construction materials.
Hemp-fibre bags also don’t end up in a landfill or a recycling center - they can simply be buried or composted back into soil.

The nature of man is to improve and strive for goodness. Inventions that do a better job of helping our planet should be applauded. This is not a political issue, but a sane and humanitarian one. Anyone who has watched a bird covered in oil struggling to survive as it is being cleaned by a loving person, certainly must yearn for wiser practices and a pristine clean and gorgeous planet. It is our sacred job to ensure that this happens. It is a serious serious union, this wedding man has with his environment and all in it. Each day I sing praise for the untold glory and beauty of this amazing earth.
64. James | 04.22.09
Ok, reusable plastic bags are nice, but there are many other easy things you can do to limit your environmental impact.
Here are a few more environmentally friendly practices:
1)Buy a canteen and fill it up with water. Stop buying plastic water bottles.
2)Stop using copious amounts of pesticides on your yard - runoff takes these nasty chemicals and puts them in our fragile watersheds and ecosystems.
3)Ask your city planners to allocate more natural and open space within your city limits. Limiting the amount of paved surfaces allows rain water to permeate back into the ground rather than causing extensive runoff.

I am hoping Al Gore will allow the earth to warm a little bit more before he locks in the temperatures. I have to heat my house with natural gas and it can get quite expensive where I live. “Wind Energy” is a scam.
Intermittent, unreliable, inefficient, huge footprint and far more costly than conventional and will always have to be heavily subsidized by the taxpayer. A medieval way of generating power. Solar (PV) and geothermal is fine to promote so why an industry that will never pay for itself and will always be far more
expensive and a burden? Well its all about “green” politics even if it doesn’t make any sense.
70. Fred Freid | 04.22.09
It would be nice if the environmentals would do the “right” thing but they ALWAYS GET IT WRONG!!!” Lets see RoHS saved us from lead but batteries were exempt and a single car battery has more lead than all the components we changed over at an EXTREME COST OF BILLIONS!! And what about trying out a Battery vehicle DUH lets see pollution is greater than a HUMVEE for transport and manufacturing of the battery are far worse for the environment. AND going to the floro bulb–what a joke!!! They keep trying to fool everyone about the cost –that they save “energy” PLEASE they cost a fortune, don’t last if you go with the cheaper one and they have dangerous chemicals in them–and they never pay for themselves. Maybe we should have gone with an LED version??? Again, they alway get it wrong. Lets stop going for the “spin” and feeling good and do something with some planning–something the religious enviro never do. Now, lets crash the space shuttle with enviro safe fricken foam!!
71. Fred Freid | 04.22.09
My favorite is the huge outboards on Gore’s houseboat. He says they burn biofuel!!
People in the area have no idea what he is talking about. They state there is not any bio fuel to be found anywhere within a hundred miles. I suppose this pope of the enviro religion stops at burger king and asks them for some fry oil so he can get across the lake!
I have news for you; your pope is a big fat marketing lie. you are making things worse. Buy the way trees are a crop and saving paper does nothing. Now if you water your lawn that is something else entirely because grass creates more oxygen than trees do–oh wait you dont want us to do that either.

Earth day answer is simple. 100% nuclear power with reprocessing the spent fuel to reuse it–move to breeder reactors that make more fuel than they use. The residual radioactive material will not be an issue–France has been doing it for 40 years–no problem. Then go to GM’s E-REV that will get 500mpg gasoline equivalent by using E85 ethanol and Lithium batteries. But we will need to have a gas tax to keep gas at $5 a gallon to change the behavior of the public away from pure gas cars and trucks. Remember the public did not give a damn for GMs EV1 in the early 90s. If gas price stays low–going green with vehicles will not happen–the public still does not give a damm with $2 gas. Lets all bite the bullet and make it happen folks.

To all I say, that everything you consume in any way, shape or form, uses some form of synthetics, either in its content or by way of manufacturing. Which means, that the world will never, ever be oil free. The green wackos are only making our life more miserable by using corn and other plants for Bio-diesel and other make believe green products. This only makes our food more expensive.
Oh! about the plastic bags? Has anyone taking the time to learn how much material goes into making a bag? I thought so. I am proud to be an American.

I live in a trailer court . That means I’m not rich . How many of you have ever worked for a poor person ? I like the rich . I plan on being one someday . There are people (rich ones) who have single handedly done more good for this world w/ the mere stroke of a pen than a lifetime of recycling , blogging and activism from the naive left . I say make something beautiful out of a tree for Earth Day .

This whole “global warming” ting is nothing but a huge power-play that is being perpetrated by politicians. As time goes on, more and more evidence is revealed that indicates that the “debate” is NOT over, and that man may NOT be entirely responsible for it. BUT - any news that would indicate that warming is natural will receive no coverage because no one can make a political or monetary profit off THAT news. “Carbon Credits” are nothing more than another name for “global income re-distribution”. The “more fortunate” countries will have to buy credits from “less fortunate” countries. Carbon Credits tax (punish) productive companies and reward (pay) non-productive ones. How much sense does that make? Plus, if you have to buy carbon credits, what have you REALLY bought? If you are selling them, what have you REALLY sold? Answer: NOTHING! But you HAVE sold your soul to socialist politicians who are ONLY concerned with riches and power!

I work at sea so I don’t listen to Limbaugh, but I am concerned about Congress, the President and the EPA driving up the cost of electricity and about everything we manufacture. I worry business failures and job losses as a result of new heavy handed climate laws being proposed. People are hurting bad enough already and even though some jobs are created by raising the costs of electricity from coal based generators, how many more will be lost? It is irresponsible to burden our already weakened economy.
If it were true that we are driving temperatures up I would agree with these policies that will soon by placed on all of us, but I don’t believe. There are many rebuttals of the AGW hypothesis, but they are not being reported in the mainstream press. Thank God for the internet where contrarian views can be heard. On the internet you can fine many contrarians of the Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) Hypothesis. But I will point to only two, one fairly technical and the second meant to inform parents of school children in Great Britain about serious flaws in Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truths. The first is here http://www.scientificexploration.org/journal/jse_21_4_kauffman.pdf and the second is at scienceandpublicpolicy.org/images/stories/press_releases/monckton-response-to-gore-errors.pdf.
Near the end of the first document I point toward above the author states the following.
The concern at the top about ‘‘climate change’’ is not genuine, and there are hidden motives behind the global warming hysteria. Maurice Strong, . . . who was partially responsible for putting together the Kyoto Protocol . . . stated: ‘‘We may get to the point where the only way of saving the world will be for industrial civilization to collapse’’. Timothy Wirth, U.S. Undersecretary of State for Global Issues . . . [said]: ‘‘We have got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing in terms of economic policy and environmental policy’’. Richard Benedick, a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State . . . stated: ‘‘A global warming treaty must be implemented even if there is no scientific evidence to back the [enhanced] greenhouse effect’’
At the end of the second document I point to above the author states the following:
As many as 35 serious scientific errors or exaggerations, all pointing towards invention of a threat that does not exist at all, or exaggerations of phenomena that do exist, do not reflect credit on the presenter of the movie or on those who advised him. The movie is unsuitable for showing to children, and provides no basis for taking policy decisions. Schools that have shown the movie to children are urged to ensure that the errors listed in this memorandum are drawn to the children’s attention.
We all have a responsibility to become informed, but by reading only the popular press all we will become is indoctrinated.

Hey Glen in NC-
I’d suggest you check out East Africa - ideally, Somalia. They have virtually no environmental or labor regulations. It’s a model of the kind of living the Right is trying to push us towards.

Coal and Oil have done more for humanity than any liberal that ever lived. Unless you hate electricity, automobiles (including ambulances)and heating your house in the winter , you really ought to get on your knees and thank the Lord for the blessings of fossil fuels.

Thank you, Rush, for all the good work you do! By focusing the spotlight on the horrid and ignorant anti-environmentalism of the Republican Party which you now ostensibly lead, you do more to steer America away from its excesses than any bearded hippie in a tree ever did. Clear-thinking, moderate Republicans who actually care about the health of the planet will continue to flee to ‘greener pastures’.
