One day after a disastrous appearance on the Today Show where Vice President Biden advised not to fly or take the subway, his office announced that he's leaving the country. He will travel to Southeastern Europe the week of May 18th and visit Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo.

Biden kicked out of country after flu remarks?

By Jimmy Orr | 05.01.09

Things have gotten so bad for the vice president following his disastrous Today Show appearance that he’s been exiled?

No. It’s just coincidental that the day after he strayed way off message on how to deal with the flu virus that his office announced he’s going on an overseas trip.

The veep is headed for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Kosovo beginning on May 18.

“During the visit, the Vice President will meet with the political leadership in all three countries, as well as U.S. officials and military personnel stationed in the region,” the vice president’s office announced.

Yesterday

That’s a much less urgent message than the one his office cranked out yesterday following his appearance on the Today Show. That press release explained that what Biden said on the program — he didn’t mean.

“On the Today Show this morning the Vice President was asked what he would tell a family member who was considering air travel to Mexico this week,” the release read. “The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the Administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico.”

Not so much

Of course, that’s not at all what he said.

“I wouldn’t go anywhere in confined places right now,” Biden said, specifically mentioning subways and airplanes.

When White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs also tried to spin Biden’s remarks, one White House reporter wouldn’t stand for it and pushed back.

That resulted in a priceless statement by Gibbs followed by an eruption of laughter.

“I understand what he said, and I’m telling you what he meant to say,” the frustrated flack snapped.

Coast to coast

Gibbs wasn’t alone. Politicians across America had to assure their constituents that the vice president was overreacting.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was one of the first to calm the masses.

“My message really is it IS safe to fly. There is no reason to cancel flights,” he said.

Huff

Regardless, we still like comedian Andy Borowitz’s take on it (our favorite blogger at the Huffington Post).

Taking his most urgent action to date since cases of swine flu were first reported, President Barack Obama today ordered an emergency quarantine of Vice President Joe Biden.

According to President Obama, the vice president will be kept in a sealed box away from television cameras and microphones “until we are certain that the danger is passed.”

“There is no clear scientific proof that swine flu can be spread by television cameras or microphones,” Mr. Obama said. “But it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Biden’s cmpaign claim of the Hezbollah having been driven out of Lebabon still remains at the top of my personal list his memorable moments.

2. dominic | 05.01.09

No wonder Cheney was so tight lipped during his vice-presidency.

3. Dave | 05.01.09

He was right.

4. Ray | 05.01.09

The Libs wanted this administration, and danged if they didn`t get it ! Good work Joe !!

5. Keith | 05.01.09

I’m sure that Joe Biden was chosen as the Presidential running mate to sort of divert attention from the real guy. President Obama can probably do all kinds of stupid stuff and very few will notice because they’re too busy laughing at his “fall guy”! Probably a good idea, because everyone makes a mistake now and then, and Obama is no exception. Joe just makes more, because he opens his mouth a lot.

6. Mick | 05.01.09

What the **** is wrong speaking the truth. You people are such weenies.

7. Veronica | 05.01.09

I think Biden’s right…”better safe than sorry”

8. jvln101 | 05.01.09

What is this? A Joke? I don’t get it. Boy you Republicans sure are getting desperate lately, since Specter crossed ranks.

9. prairie | 05.01.09

i think he was right on.

10. Matt Anderson | 05.01.09

It seems that Ole Papa Joe Biden is suffering once again from hoof in mouth disease!!. ROTFLMAO!!!. I wonder how long he will be “exiled” from his land?. Hopefully he won’t do to much damage abroad. Nothing like cruise missle Biden to take out the enemy!!!…LOL

11. Mayu | 05.01.09

it’s hilarious that the government spent over a week trying to calm the nerves of the anxious nation… and Biden ruined what took them a week to accomplish in 5 seconds. LOLLOLOL God I missed Biden, why were they hiding him these last 100 days!

12. George Steenburgh | 05.01.09

Mr Orr, did you read the comments on the previous article on this website.
Comments were 95% in favor of the advice that the Vice Present gave. Ok Mr Orr maybe you did not see this as were at the undisclosed location.

13. Joe M | 05.01.09

He was right !!! To bad people will risk life by doing stupid things.

14. dink | 05.01.09

joe’s as good a public speaker as robert “uhhhhh” gibbs. buncha clowns running this circus.

15. Country Nurse | 05.01.09

I am appalled at how this has been totally taken out of context. I watched the TODAY Show yesterday morning during this interview. Let me first say that I like and enjoy the TODAY Show however, I disagree with how this developed yesterday. The VP was asked (paraphrased) what he would say to his own family now about traveling…Vice President Biden answered for HIS family. Then the statement became blown out of proportion. Perhaps the VP should have asked Matt if he would travel in close quarters public transportation or what advice Matt would give his family right now about traveling. Bet you Matt would have tapped danced all around this. I feel our VP once again was taken advantage of by the media. I am disappointed with the TODAY SHOW and their trolling for prey during this particular time.

16. Bond Shands | 05.01.09

Perhaps our disappointment in Vice President Biden’s verbal gaffes is misplaced for it could be possible that he’s suffering from a serious physical handicap. The cause of his embarrassing misstatements may result from an auditory disability. I’ve noticed that whenever he speaks, his mouth opens and sound escapes. It’s that escaping sound that needs to be restrained. He should try speaking with a closed mouth - and see if that succeeds in at least muffling the noises his vocal chords normally make.

17. Enough Already | 05.01.09

This headline hurt mankind.

18. Lucy | 05.01.09

Get over it! I would tell the same thing to my family…once again, the media is making a big deal out of nothing!

19. JJ | 05.01.09

I think we need to remember that with JOE BIDEN there’s a 60% chance that he’s geting 30% of it wrong. And since the lefty-media championed BIDEN as the lovable “you know Joe” when he was picked by OBAMA they can’t complain about him now.

IMAGINE if Dick Cheney shot his mouth off like that all the time. They would be killing him.

20. George | 05.01.09

Why are his comments such a big deal? We are not nation of mindless baboons. He of course meant, avoid areas, where lots of people gather in close contact - if you can. Guess why - this IS THE WAY this flu spreads. Common sense, seemingly rare, should tell you that. Maybe we all should get a life!

21. Enough Already | 05.01.09

Entertainment Tonight called. They want you to blog for them.

22. Scott | 05.01.09

Excellent reporting. Again, “the Veep” is out of touch with reality. The so-called “bull dog” for the Obama admin. turns out ot be a confused poodle. You will find Obama replacing more than Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court. Biden will be “asked” to leave as V.P. within 2 years tops! I love it when the liberals spin their own ineptitude. The enitre Obama admin. is incompetent. The public is gradually seeing a joke in action.

23. BruiserND | 05.01.09

June 15,1987 Ronald Reagan wrote in his diary of Joe Biden “pure demagog”

If the Gipper was alive today he would write;
Joe Biden is the best thing to happen to the GOP since the Iranian hostages.

24. Mark Anderson | 05.01.09

VP Biden is too honest to be a public servant. I have no numbers, but I would bet the political overreaction to VP Biden’s comments is based on how the comments may adversely impact business. However, I bet no politicians have any background in the prevention of a pandemic. Maybe what would be best (if this flu is a real threat) is to do exactly what the VP said. This could nip the spread in the bud and possibly keep a much worse impact on business at bay. Imagine if this flu starts spreading like wild fire (due to the use of public transportation where it could be spread more easily). Imagine if it became as virulent as the spanish flu of the early 1900s. At that point would the government issue a mandate against public transportation or would they just accept the continued spread of the virus. Not to mention the possible loss of life. I think politicians in general are ridiculous. Anyone who tries to please everyone ends up pleasing no one and eventually causes more harm than good. Any person listening to Biden from main street would probably say they agree with Joe. On the other hand it may be to inconvenient for some Americans to put off a vacation or some other form of optional travel. It is time that we start taking sacrifice serious in the US and that means all Americans.

25. Sharon Zirn | 05.01.09

I thought he may have been sent to Mexico City. Leave Joe alone!!

26. John | 05.01.09

Thank God for Biden! He’s the only comic relief we have right now…

27. greggler | 05.01.09

Biden did not stray off topic, he was asked a specific personal question and gave an extremely reasonable answer. I have not heard anyone step up and say that any part of his answer was scientifically unfounded or provocative of panic. Perhaps his answer makes people feel uncomfortable but whose problem is that? Exactly when did we become a country of fragile people to be shielded from any truth which might cause discomfort?

28. Nick | 05.01.09

I don’t know what’s funnier, the fact this makes blog news (note: Biden hasn’t shot anyone in the face with a shotgun) or that a FOX “news” video was included. You could make endless newsworthy articles of slip ups after watching a day of that.

29. Russell Utoft | 05.01.09

What is wrong with what he said? It’s good advice.
A airplane is about the most dangerous place to be if there is any kind flu.

30. with-a-z | 05.01.09

When are they ever going to learn to keep this man away from the TV cameras? He is constantly putting his foot in his mouth at every turn - how embarrassing! As if Obama hasn’t had enough faux pas of his own.

31. Bill | 05.01.09

Amazing how so many folks rush to his defense! Of course he said something ridiculous and panic-inducing - don’t sugarcoat it! The fact is, those defending Biden are the same folks who hung on Bush’s every word to make fun of him. Same thing happened to Quail. Amazing how simply being in the Democratic party all of a sudden just makes you an “honest Joe”. Wonderful administration.

32. Carole Clarke | 05.01.09

This epidemic/pandemic of swine flu has not even begun to play out. It has spread extremely quickly due to air travel and we will not see the end of it for some time. Fortunately the two medications widely available seem to work well on this strain. But the basic fact remains that this virus is spread by air and human contact. The masks may not work but the handwashing certainly does - we do everything with our hands and they inevitably touch the nose/mouth area. Joe Biden may have spoken off-message as determined by his boss the President but that has nothing to do with him being right or wrong. Staying off confined public transport means that you’ve chosen to stand out of the line of fire - common sense. Business may suffer but what is that against a loss of life? Joe Biden is nobody’s fool.

33. Lord Astral | 05.01.09

Come on America don’t be such cowards. Avoiding travelling to Mexico is one thing, but shutting down schools over the flu? Really, quit being afraid of everything that comes along. Are we going to shut down the country every cold and flu season?

Biden is just an extreme example of this. Of course he overreacted, just like most Americans seem to be doing.

34. Bill | 05.01.09

Furthermore, if it wasn’t ridiculous, the administration wouldn’t be back-pedaling and trying to explain “what he meant to say”.

35. Mike | 05.01.09

Heh. Sent to ze Russian Front!

36. mikem | 05.01.09

Remember well before November, when some said “Obama will be elected when pigs fly? Well, Obama was elected and swine flew.

37. Don | 05.01.09

It might not be politically correct but he was right. I’ve stopped taking the bus to work since I’m close enough to walk.

38. Michael A. Thompson | 05.01.09

This statement by Biden, and many of his previous ones, clearly shows him to be one of the greatest politician EVER! :) (For the slow minded: This is sarcasm.)

39. nic | 05.01.09

CSM — you guys are better than this.

Please leave the factually-inaccurate reporting to Fox. We all know it’s impossible to pull of a junket in one day. You’re the one right-leaning outlet I still read, as you’re usually responsible journalists. Please don’t lose my trust by publishing swill like this.

40. Carl | 05.01.09

Wonder how long until Obama will stop slapping Bidens hands and just give up on him

41. mikemsucks | 05.01.09

oh your a funny guy mikem…not

42. eGad | 05.01.09

Joe Biden? The NEW George Bush!

43. Glendalebrigade | 05.01.09

37k died from regular flu last year. how many from swine?

44. God Bless America | 05.01.09

Wow. Where else can one do a poor job and then get rewarded with an overseas junket? With a poor economy it is hardly prudent to waste millions of dollars sending the Vice-President overseas. This is fraud, waste, and abuse of taxpayers’ money at it’s best. It will be cheaper to keep the Vice Pres. in his “official” residence, and keep the media away from him. This is the Obama tactic to keep Hillary out of the limelight. It is amazing the Dems. can’t stand to have their chosen people criticized! V. P. Cheney was slammed by the liberals. Man up and take your own medicine. On Jan. 20, 2013 the Republicans will restore normalcy. This still is a free country - protect your rights now.

45. AnimalFarmUSA | 05.01.09

I’m waiting for Obama to make another Special Olympics crack about this one.

These guys are the best of the best. Top leaders of our country and the free world. Let this be another lesson and remember to fight for less government.

46. akcoyote | 05.01.09

Joe Biden is starting to make Dan Quayle look like a genius. Biden has 35 years in the senate and you people say Sarah Palin is too dumb and inexperienced to be VP? HA! All I can say is, we had all better hope that BO stays healthy for the next 4 years.

47. Michael | 05.01.09

Funny how the Right gets so worked over things like this but saw nothing wrong with lying to get us into a war. Desperation much?

48. nic | 05.01.09

The Libs wanted this administration, and danged if they didn`t get it ! Good work Joe !!

——

You’re right…we did. And we’re still happy with the way they’re handling things along with nearly 70% of the total population. At least when our guys “mispeak,” we’re not dragged into never-ending wars. It’s one thing to make an occasional stupid comment, another to complete distort reality to fit your political agenda/ideology.

Biden’s comment was harmless. The media has done more to spin this thing out of porportion than any 1 quip by a politician. Now they’re using this as CYA, as everyone’s starting to question the irresponsible sensationalism that’s being generated by mainstream pubs like the CSM.

49. J.Szymanski | 05.01.09

Is anyone else wondering why we’re making such a big deal out of this to begin with? Roughly 60,000 people die every year in this country from influenza and pneumonia. Why is this such a headline story all of a sudden?

50. Jake | 05.01.09

He’s exactly right. In an information vacuum a rational mind makes conservative decisions. It wasn’t an accident. Ever hear of hedging your bets?

51. Nate | 05.01.09

I’m glad we now have a clarification. Joe Biden was speaking of his OWN family. Which means only they should stay away from confined spaces. Screw the rest of us!

52. dana | 05.01.09

The man gave advice to his family which is the same advice I’d give mine. *** is with you people- when it cmoes to risking the lives of those you don’t care about- SURE travelling is safe for THEM… but do you REALLY think that about your own children, your parents? No, didn’t think so. Wait and see what this stupid flu is going to do before you assume you’re immortal.

53. Dan | 05.01.09

Oooooooooh, this is the juicy type of controversy I love to read. It makes total sense that this is still a front-page news story for the right wing. After all, its not like there is other stuff going on, like two wars and an economic crisis. Wow, the Repubs are grasping these days, huh?

54. nic | 05.01.09

Yes. His comment is ridculous.

So too is the notion that he was exiled as a result.

Same goes for this whole swine flu nonsense.

Can our media please start being responsible again? Our country needs informed debate now more than ever, and you’re totally killing any chance of that happening. Stop the yellow journalism!

55. Jon | 05.01.09

Joe Biden is being thrown under the train by his own party. His offense? Honesty. Pure and simple. He was not being an alarmist. He was simply being truthful. President Obama’s administration expects everything sugar coated for the masses, at the expense of clarity, accuracy, and honesty.

56. Karl K. | 05.01.09

I look at it this way. They kept him from saying anything until day 101. So the first 100 days are safe for history

57. Rob G. | 05.01.09

Just like Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden can’t open his mouth without shoving his foot in it.

58. Forrest Lytle | 05.01.09

They told me if I voted for McCain we’d have a moron for a Vice President…and they were right!*
Enjoy Diego Garcia Slow Joe!
*Tom Maguire at Just One Minute blog.

59. nic | 05.01.09

At least Biden can articulate a complete sentence, unlike our last Idiot in Chief.

60. Dayana Martinez | 05.01.09

Maybe Obama ought to send Biden on a tour of “all 57 states” to explain his gaffes.

61. Monte | 05.01.09

Lets all gather around and embrace the courage of Joe Biden to speak his mind truthfully without fear of ridicule from his political opponents… It would be nice if we could give poor Ms California the same courtesy.

62. Mike | 05.01.09

Next thing you know, **** be telling people to stock up on duct tape and plastic sheeting.

63. Sean | 05.01.09

I can appreciate him keeping it real. He wasn’t trying to scare anyone. He just tells is like it is without all the usual PC BS that most politicians spew.

64. sharron | 05.01.09

Re: Vice-President Bidden….Good Morning America.
Do reporters/corespondents, on occasions, react/respond to events in much the same manner that elementary school-age children react/respond to situations on the playground? i.e…making fun of and laughing at others, showing disrespect to peers and adults, lacking a true sense of kindness, and displaying egocentric behaviors. Do we always need to champion our own agendas that ultimately result in tunnel vision and displaced empowerment? Perhaps Vice-President Bidden comments were meant to reiterate the need for people to take precuations during this flu epidemic…..not create havoc for anything/anyone connected to travel, etc. (Another possible bailout? What synicism!!)

65. RationalVoice | 05.01.09

C’mon guys. Joe Biden spoke his mind and said what any reasonable person would say. Thanks for railing on him for telling folks to err on the side of caution. I know travel industry is watching its profits and does not like what he has to say. If this flu does get out of hand because of travel and Joe had not said anything, the same people who are criticizing Joe Biden now would be rattling about how this administration did not do enough to. Jeez!! You finally have a good government. Appreciate it!

66. Donna E | 05.01.09

Thank goodness for Joe Biden’s common sense. The advice to his family is exacly the same advice we are employing. The fact is every single contraction of the swine flu in America resulted from someone traveling or coming in contact with someone who had traveled. ‘Nuf said.

67. eric harger | 05.01.09

The juxtaposition of the two events does raise humorous speculation that Joe has been sent to the woodshed. But perhaps another juxtaposition not so funny but equally suspicous is Obama’s trip to Mexico, the subsequent illness contracted by a White House staffer, and Obama’s recent refirmation of the CIA.
The Wall St mafia did not go away Jan. 20 2009, they just faded back into the landscape, in a never ending cycle of pillage and fear mongering.
I think Obama recognizes the fatal mistep of JFK in not recognizing the CIA for what it is; the most dangerous elephant in the room, the operational arm of Wall St, by and for Wall St.
The Wall St/CIA mafia does practice, research and produce biological and germ warfare and it has consistantly shown its willingness to experiment with unwitting sections of populations, wether it’s pharmamob testing in Africa, Kylon-B in Auzwitz (managed by Prescott Bush) or rabbit fever on anti-war protesters. A report that this strain of swine flu most closely resembles a strain not seen since the middle of the 19th century raises the question: with rapid mutation the primary concern of an epidemic, how could this strain remain virtually genetically intact for a century and a half? Likely it could not have naturally. Could someone in government with access to stored strains have recultured an old cateloged sample? It’s possible and if the only response is “they wouldn’t do something like that”, we are ignoring the fact that “they” have, over and over again. It’s a mafia, see.

The Wall St mafia has billions of deaths under it’s belt over the last 150 years and a few more deaths won’t make a difference to them. It’s all about the money. Human biengs are just commodities in their world wide game of chess and domination. When JFK threatened that money stream by refusing full scale war in Vietnam, they got rid of him. Eisenhower before him warned him, “beware of the military-industrial complex”.
To me, it looks like a warning shot across the bow from the big money class to Obama: “that’s far enough, or else”.
I realize all this is somewhat speculative, but no more so than Joe’s dunce cap. Peace.

68. Democrats 4 Ever | 05.01.09

Joe Biden was right about Obama facing an international crisis in his first 6 months, it’s been less than 6 months and Obama has faced several. Of course the snotty, ignorant Repugs attacked him then too. He happens to be right again this time too, if you don’t -need- to travel right now and you want to avoid the increased possibility of getting sick, don’t fly or take a train, it’s just that simple. Of course the transportation industry doesn’t want to hear this, they lose money, but you may lose your LIFE. The media has to have something to beat on or they don’t get paid, this story is ridiculous. I’d rather have a VP warn us about where you are most likely to get a deadly virus than one who might accidentally shoot you in the face.

69. zinnamongirl | 05.01.09

OMG! Vice President Biden commits the crime of the century! He tells the TRUTH!

70. bigb | 05.01.09

Joe Biden is Obama’s Dan Quayle

71. Joe | 05.01.09

Give me a break. This is such non-news. He said what he told HIS family. Not what he is telling the American public. Just what HE believes. Should he have said it, I don’t know. But everyone is twisting this so far out of wack that the truth is barely there now. The fox news report was like icing on the cake. Nothing like video bull to go with written bull.

Even if it was a ‘gaff’, it is nothing compared to what we heard for the last 8 years, so give it a rest. Seriously.

72. ignatzh | 05.01.09

Biden won’t be gone for long - he’s needed back at home to protect the interests of the credit card and financial/banking industry.

73. Dave P | 05.01.09

Yeah. Don’t fly on airliners. Where all the air in the entire cabin is exchanged many times per minute… makng it cleaner than 99.9% of all workplaces in the world.

These “misstatements” happen when you don’t read before you speak. But then, that’s a habit developed from not reading before you VOTE.

74. BidenMe | 05.01.09

LOL you dems really are trying to spin this positive aintcha?
The guy is a blithering idiot and when ever he opens his mouth not even he knows what will come out of it!
I am sure for one thing though, Obummer picked him for veep because he sure makes him look good, especially when the pres gets caught without a teleprompter!
I’ll still never forget Obummer pronouncing Orion as OREEE ANN that makes the potato gaff of Dan Quayle look not so stupid.
You idiots got change and I hope you like paying for $10,000,000,000,000.00 dollars worth of it!

75. Al Suarez | 05.01.09

Joe Biden is the King of gaffes. He should not be allowed to speak with reporters without Gibbs right next to him. He’s making Obama look bad and if Obama is smart, **** keep Joe away from the press. He’s not qualified to tell people what to do regarding the swine flu, so seek the advice of your health care professional and remember almost all politicans are just talking heads.

76. fiendish avatar | 05.01.09

How is it that the MSM is so a-buzz about Biden’s remarks about his family? I see no breaks. How unfair. The Right promised that the MSM would protect Obama and his Veep at all costs. I feel so used and violated by the Right. How could they lie to me like that?

77. deedubster | 05.01.09

“If you can avoid it, don’t go into confined spaces with a lot of other people”. Is it really so radical to give such advice to your family members when there’s a flu scare? Of course, the travel industry complained.

The mere fact that Fox News and others who hope this government fails jumped all over this as a big story shows what a great job the Obama administration is doing. The best the right-wingers can do is take cheap shots like this. The sound of them gnashing their teeth in the wilderness is music to my ears.

78. Richard McDonough | 05.01.09

Dear Bozo,

Biden said what an official of the CDC said, what your mother would say, were she a decent mother,
what common sense would say.

Have to fly? Fly.

Have to take the subway? Take the subway.

Have to read Orr? Hold your nose.

79. ha ha | 05.01.09

I think …we should juts SEND Biden to some other country in south Africa permanently for next 3 years and bring him back to US for photo ops once in a year only and finally bring him back on reelection year campaign so Obama can win again.

80. Fredric L. Rice | 05.01.09

LOL! Insane rightards. Republonazi right winders hate everything the United States stands for. They should all pack up and move to Iran, a theofascist government that’s more in keeping with their Republican ideologies.

81. Virginia | 05.01.09

I have an idea. All the people who think Joe Biden’s statement was ridiculous, just get on a subway or an airplane, along with all the politicians, and Gibbs, during the midst of a flu epedimic.

He was asked what advice he’d give his family and he gave an honest and intelligent answer. This swine flu is one we don’t know anything about. To not be careful would be stupid. Some people don’t have a choice except to get on an airplane or subway, but I wouldn’t if I didn’t have to.

82. Gene | 05.01.09

I just want to know whether the V.P. always sleeps standing up, or just when he is in the presence of B.H.O.

83. Richard McDonough | 05.01.09

Those who refer to Orr as Mr. Orr are more genteel tha is required. He is a hired Republican gun.

84. Joe | 05.01.09

306,331,648 people in the USA… 144 cases of swine flu…. lets do some math… 144/306,331,648 is .000000047 percent of the population, there would have to be 3,063,316 cases for it be 1% of the us population. And Yeah, I agree with Biden. I wouldn’t travel to Mexico for ANYTHING right now. “Here take your medication with this brown infected water” I mean really, how do you take someones response and generalize it in a news clip? I believe the question was, “what would you tell a family member about traveling to Mexico right now?” or something like that. Yeah, stay out of Mexico and their sub standard medical care.

85. ron e | 05.01.09

This really is a lot of todo over nothing. However it’s kind of natural to pick on people you don’t care for. For instance it’s true; Dick Cheney would not have ’shot his mouth off’ like Joe. He kept himself busy shooting the mouths off of others.

86. Fetrovsky | 05.01.09

What is the big deal??? He said don’t travel, he meant it!, don’t stone him for speaking his mind and don’t make it a political scandal. You’ll decide if you listen to him or not… are you free or just chicks following mother goose??

I am a Republican and agree wholeheartedly with what J.B. recommends. I am just finding it absolutely hilarious that the Media dares to attack any part of the Administration for any reason. The Media certainly doesn’t want to upset the travel industry any more than they want to offend our neighbors to the South. Imagine those fanatical Border Guards asking to wear masks. How ridiculous of them not to want to take the Flu home to their families. What were they thinking!

88. keith | 05.01.09

Here is the sad truth. Our 2nd in command said HE or HIS FAMILY would not feel safe on a plane or subway etc…. and the rest of our government is so very quick to tell us what “THEY SAY” he ment……..Didn’t he say what he ment? He sounded pretty clear to me!! WHY MUST WE COVER EVERYTHING UP!?? Not more than a few weeks one of our top officials dealing with the border situation in Mexico said “aliens crossing the border is not actually a federal offense, it more cival” …….WHAT???!!!!!??!?!? Later her department released a statement saying “she misspoke, what she ment was… Crossing the border is a federal crime..”…..yatta yatta…. I missed the rest because my ears were too busy bleeding!!!!

Ya know, I sure with I had group of people watching every word that comes out my mouth so when I screw up, say with my girlfriend, boss or traffic cop, they can review MY statement and “FIX” it to what I should have said or “what I ment to say” WHY CAN’T WE HOLD POLITICIANS TO THERE SPOKEN WORD!? This sort of reminds me of a TWIX commercial ……. Need a minute? Chew it over with the U.S. Government!!!!

“I think we need to remember that with JOE BIDEN there’s a 60% chance that he’s geting 30% of it wrong.”

So your saying %18 of the time he’s wrong? I think you’ve shot wide of your intended target JJ. Your percentages are fictional and your math is faulty. Go ahead and give it another ****, will ya?

90. zeek | 05.01.09

Gone are the days when vice presidents were intelligent, like Dan Quayle, comparatively speaking of course. Joe Biden is a fool of the highest order. You have to question Barack Obama’s judgement every time Biden does ANYTHING.

91. CitizenSucker | 05.01.09

I’m outraged that Biden had the unmitigated gall to tell the truth on national television. Why, I’ve never heard of such a thing coming out of a Washington politician. From all accounts, it would appear that he was actually honestly attempting to convey information intended to be in the best interest of his listeners and the public at large.

NOBODY DOES THAT IN WASHINGTON!

If they did that, pretty soon people would start trusting their representatives to actually REPRESENT THEM. How ridiculous. Let’s put all this behind us and forget about it as quickly as possible. If we don’t, this minor slip in convention could lead to something far more catastrophic such as other politicians telling the truth. What would happen then? God only knows, maybe a fully functioning healthy DEMOCRACY, or WORSE!

Joe, Washington is NO PLACE FOR HONESTY! KEEP YOUR HONEST FEELINGS TO YOURSELF, IF NOT FOR YOURSELF, THEN FOR THE SAKE OF THE PARTY AND THE GOOD OLD BOYS. My God, MAN, it’s the American Way!

92. Keystoned | 05.01.09

All of you who are defending Joe The Poodle are just as retarded as he is. Sure, anyone can express their personal opinion, and if you don’t want to fly or take a bus or whatever to protect yourself, so be it. The point these folks are missing is that he is the VP of the USA, not just some guy off the street who no one besides himself and his family would care what his opinion is. What the VP of our country says reverberates accross the entire World and right here on our shores. When someone so powerful as the VP of the US says what he says it could create wide-spread panic, that to me is absolutely irresponsible, but then again, this is the same administration that chose to fly a 747 over NY City with a fighter escort not giving a care about the people on the ground, they didn’t even properly alert the State of NY of their actions! Of course, Obama will hide under the cover of “I didn’t know”, which, of course, really means “I didn’t do it”. This administration is dangerous, it does not care one iota about the American people, only themselves. They want to go down as the administration who cares, blaming others and try to reopen old wounds by prosecuting the previous administration and making us look like the bad guys to the rest of the World. Mark my words, this administration will go down as the worst in history.

93. D***A** | 05.01.09

Keep pointing fingers and laughing Mr. Biden is no fool , there is no place safer than home. The outrage here is how upset for one the airline industry got about this they are more worried about the money they will lose than the life you can lose.

94. Shysuz | 05.01.09

As a nurse practitioner I will tell you I would not get in an airplane or be in any sort of crowded conveyance at this time. What he said is excellent advice. If you have to fly then fly but you may get sick. Luckily, outside of México, this flu appears to be a fairly mild illness. His remarks may not have been politically correct (we have to keep the travel industry afloat, of course) but he was epidemiologicaly correct.

95. Gene | 05.01.09

RE: 80

Mr. Rice,

If you think it is the Republicans who hate everything the U.S. stands for, I suggest you read the Communist agenda written into the Congressional record in 1963 http://www.uhuh.com/nwo/communism/comgoals.htm and compare it to today’s Democratic Party’s beliefs/platform. You may want to re-think that. Unless, of course, you agree with the Communists. Not all Democrats are bad, but all Democratic leaders currently in command are bad for this country.

96. Troy | 05.01.09

Seems like Joe could benefit from the use of a telepromter too. This administration just cannot say a word without having it scripted for them.

97. Dave in Colorado | 05.01.09

JJ said: “I think we need to remember that with JOE BIDEN there’s a 60% chance that he’s geting 30% of it wrong.” Biden is only proving his talk radio qualifications — a mysterious land where you can invent, distort or lie at will. The only diff being that no one bothers to check the facts on Rush/Hannity/Savage. Wait. No one checks the facts because there are no facts.

98. nic | 05.01.09

I am sure for one thing though, Obummer picked him for veep because he sure makes him look good, especially when the pres gets caught without a teleprompter!

——

Dear moron,

Politicians have been using teleprompters since their advent. Your own dearest Sarah Palin used one. When she didn’t have one — or other prepared talking points — such as when she went mana-a-mana with Katy Couric, we all saw what happened. Aside from Fox News, what other outlets did she interview with after Couric’s series ran? Which was terribly unfortunate, as her interviews made me laugh for days…nothing like seeing an imbecile caught in over her head, and having no idea how stupid they look to people who know what they’re talking about! Seriously, Palin couldn’t even give an answer to the question of “What magazines do you read?” In case you can’t remember, she answered “all of them.” I’m sure in your mildly retarded mind, and for all the others living in your hypersubjective reality, this was “gotcha journalim” at its finest…

Meanwhile, Obama actually writes most of his own speeches. He gives articulate, well-thought and complex answers to impromptu questions. Whether you agree with those opinions or not, you come across as ignorant and naive as Palin when you try in vain to denigrate his intelligence.

P.S. We’re all laughing at you.

99. nic | 05.01.09

Sorry, but nothing tops this when it comes to stupid comments: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRkWebP2Q0Y

100. Charles | 05.01.09

Why is my use of the word S-H-O-T being censored. Comment 77 used the word without censorship, 85 talks about Cheney literally shooting someones mouth off. Somehow my use is more inappropriate than these other usages? How about some consistency.

101. Fetrovsky | 05.01.09

Maybe… but just maybe… the title should read:

Biden kicked out of context after flu remarks?

or

Biden kicked out of proportion after flu remarks?

Now, get back to work, all of ya!!!

102. Not your average Joe | 05.01.09

OK, which is it. No way would my family fly. Or what Joe really meant was that you should not fly if you are sick. Oh, I guess it is both.

So, Cramer says, “Don’t Fly Don’t Fly Don’t Fly Don’t Fly.”

103. MR BIDEN | 05.01.09

STAND UP CHUCK!!! OH WHAT THE **** AM I THINKING???

104. nic | 05.01.09

You have to question Barack Obama’s judgement every time Biden does ANYTHING.

——

Hmmm…a bit of irony here, coming from someone I assume to have voted for Bush?

Are you this overly reactive to everything in your life? If so, I feel terrible for your family, as you must be one insufferable bore.

105. Terry | 05.01.09

JJ,Nick. Dick Cheney allowed unedited raw intelligence to drive the US to an unnecessary war where he fudged the issue around torture “to keep us all safe” and his office outed a CIA agent as a reprisal for her husband not agreeing with him. Joe Bidden gives some common sense advise on flu that spreads by close contact. Not quite the same is it. Granted I though the media circus around Dick Cheney’s hunting accident was just as lame. Let’s keep it proportional and in context.

108. Thomas Mc | 05.01.09

Yes, of course. We must never let a Vice President of the United States tell the truth!

They diverted a plane today because someone came down with swine flu symptoms on the flight. So, clearly he was right.

109. Gabe | 05.01.09

Of course you turn your absurd coincidence into a question as your headline, Jimmy. There’s plenty of coincidences to look for when you’re talking about busy people. Try reporting on actual causally related events buddy.

110. Jim | 05.01.09

Many commenters seem to feel that the VP’s remarks would only affect the travel industry. They are failing to consider the effect on the tens of millions of Americans that ride subways, commuter rails and buses back and forth to work every day.

Think if they all heeded The Vice President’s advice it might have an effect on our economy?

Considering the miniscule number of H1N1 (what we’re supposed to call it now) cases and an even more miniscule number of fatalities, perhaps that explains the administration attempt to “correct” him.

111. Jasper | 05.01.09

It’s kind of ironic to be sending him over seas via air plane!! LOL!

112. Thomas Mc | 05.01.09

Silly Joe Biden, thinking that protecting the health and safety of American citizens might be more important than a corporation’s profit margin!

Where the **** did they get this guy?

113. whatever | 05.01.09

If Biden was so “right on” you liberal weenies, then why didn’t BO.org back him up.

114. Clif Willis | 05.01.09

How dare you people! Your inference that Biden was “kicked out of the country” for his remarks is absurd! He will be on a diplomatic trip that was, of course, planned a long time ago. To add to your insult, the photo you showed was hand picked to show Obama looking stern, and Biden with his head down as if in shame. Biden was probably just reading something or refering to notes. You editors need to grow up and stopped being so biased.

115. Kathy | 05.01.09

I haven’t discounted the idea that Biden was specifically asked to do this–put out information the White House wanted out but couldn’t officially say, then have it countermanded. I think there’s a good possibility he took one on the chin for the administration who can’t very well tell people to avoid going to public places while encouraging spending money! Biden’s the perfect vehicle for this. Most people trust him to speak his mind, and also me more forthcoming than perhaps he should.

Are you all so insecure that you can only respond in rage if someone laughs at someone you voted for? That’s sad.

Well, whatever. Have fun being angry, peoples.

118. Jillian | 05.01.09

The Vice President was asked a personal question about his family, and he answered it. And he ended his answer with “To me, anyway”.
One of the things I love about Joe Biden is that he speaks from his heart and not from a script - or a teleprompter.

Joe Biden spoke the truth, a plane had to be diverted today because someone was showing symptoms of the flu.

.

119. Bill | 05.01.09

My Grandmother died in the great pandemic of 1918, along with 50 million other people. If Biden is wrong, then he erred on the side of caution, which is not a bad thing. The far right will seize upon this because, seething with anger and envy over the administations high approval rating, they have little else to complain about. Besides this, I do not watch the voice of the Republican Party–Fox News, so I wasn’t aware that Biden’s remarks generated that much controversy.

120. Valon | 05.01.09

Kicked out?? He’s been scheduled for this trip for a long time now. Hopefully he can get Serbia to finally recognize Kosovo, to finally secure the peace in the Balkans once and for all.. but I doubt it’s going to happen. Worth a shot though.

121. runningj | 05.01.09

They are killing Biden for these remarks. And Dick Cheney does shoot his mouth off all the time and whomever “they” are, certainly aren’t killing him. What’s your point.

124. Dixon Haynes | 05.01.09

You couldn’t let that one pass, could you, Jimmy Orr?

I found NOTHING wrong with Vice President Biden’s response to the question about travel and influenza virus contagion. What he said–that he had advised his family members to avoid travel and confinement in close spaces and crowds unless absolutely necessary–is precisely what anyone with common sense would advise and practice.

What’s the big deal? Is some airline CEO worried that ticket sales will lag for a few days?

Or is it that those who live and work in the Northeast corridor, as is the case with the majority of national newscasters, must travel daily on commuter trains, commuter air flights, subways, etc. and they envy the rest of us in the hinterlands who have not chosen that frenetic lifestyle?

I am tired of seeing the press pick on Vice President Biden. He is an able and intelligent man and should be accorded as much respect and dignity as President Obama.

As always, your opportunistic sniping at Joe Biden is most annoying, Mr. Orr.

125. David E. Miller | 05.01.09

Yesterday I sat on an airplane at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan for over an hour and a half at the gate upon arrival. No one was allowed off the aircraft. Everyone was required to don a medical face mask while government quarantine agents personally measured the temperature of all the passengers and crew and quizzed every person on board about their answers to a personal health questionnaire. I estimate that no less than 99% of those working at the airport were wearing medical masks to protect them from this infection. The comments of Vice President Biden may be great fun for those that place politics above reality and enjoy putting down others, but for those with their critical faculties intact, this is no laughing matter. I had hoped that the US would begin to shrug off 8 years of cowboy mentality after this last election, but I now think that this disease has spread too far to be contained. You may think this disease is a joke, but others in the world think we are.

1.) They were not Iranian hostages, they were American Hostages in Iran.

2.) That the GOP (and their Parrots) think American Citizens being held hostage is a good thing, shows the true character of the CONs.

Who cares? Everyone with a IQ above 90 should know by now that our politicians and our government lie all the time. Rep. & Dem. alike, if they say more then three words at least some part is a misrepresentation.

Is the swine flu a real concern? I don’t know. But after years of post 911 amber alerts, y2k recommendations, weapons of mass destruction and mission accomplished declarations my government has lost all credibility.

So you guys can go ahead and lock yourselves in your homes, duct tape the windows shut and turn on the nightly news and wait for the alls clear…

I’m looking for a ultra-cheap trip to Cancun.

131. Nate | 05.01.09

134. SteveTheHawk | 05.01.09

I think Biden’s comments were among the most accurate to date. If the WHO is contemplating a pandemic declaration, why is it inaccurate to say that we should avoid public places, let alone enclosed public spaces with re-circulated air? We still don’t know how far this thing has/will spread.

A major university has announced that college officials will not shake hands with students at graduation ceremonies. I suppose that should be viewed as an overreaction as well, right? I don’t think so.

You are forgetting what an idiot Bush was in public! Joe Biden pales in comparison. Now some of us in our daily lives would say the same as Biden - no way am I getting on a plane right now! But he should have more sense than to be so honest in public. Bush on the other hand would have babbled aimlessly making no sense. At least Biden’s mistakes are straightforward!

140. ralph tyler | 05.01.09

It’s amazing that Biden got as far as he did. He has a very bad case of foot in mouth disease.

Perhaps he has risen because he truly cares about Americans, something that we could never say about Dick Cheyney.

141. Madison | 05.01.09

Sounds like good advice to me. CNN issues “Breaking Reports” every 10 minutes, WHO goes to defcon 5 and Joe’s the one causing a panic?

142. ronald g oconnor | 05.01.09

I appreciate Joe’s entertainment value as a bumbler. It’s amazing how the liberals can crucify Palin and give Joe a continuous pass. But on to more serious matters. This public health debate is short on facts. There is no reason to live in fear. We don’t need to take special precautions unless we have impaired immune systems. In order to contract a virus or bacteria three factors are necessary. The invader’s virulence (innate strength) must be ” sufficient,” there must be enough of them (a large army is stronger than a small one), and the host’s resistance must be low enough.

143. Birddogs | 05.01.09

145. PRINCE STEPHEN | 05.02.09

What is wrong in what the Vice President said? Absolutely nothing. You guys just can’t handle the truth of a very simple advice. He said he won’t wwant to be anywhere near a confined place right now. You guys need to learn and understand English language. Just because his advice will hurt the airline and subway business, you all now think he goofed? common handle the truth with all sincerity.

146. lesley | 05.02.09

I think the only real problem that people had with his comment would be fear of lowering sales for travel. The fault has nothing to do with his comment. Its the situation period. Hello people wake up. There is nothing wrong with being precautious! I found nothing causing panic from his comment either.
Maybe if the press would dedicate their time to educating people instead of what they do this world would be a better place. Starting with me LOL. I cant write worth a Shooo

147. Rusty | 05.02.09

Vice Presicent Biden’s comment is entirely consonant with current CDC guidelines- avoid social gatherings, esp. in confined places. Heck, the SCHOOLS, LIBRARY, and even the PARKS in my county and the adjoining one are closed for two weeks! The 1918 flu pandemic spread from Boston to Texas in 2 weeks. Today, could we concieve of a more efficient way of spreading an air-borne disease than to put 100 or so people in a very confined space with recirculating air for several hours and then let them out into a new highly populated area? Biden’s comments make perfect sense, and anyone paying attention to the CDC guidelines would have been already considering the same things. Granted, this is an inconvenience to the travel industries, but doesn’t putting the interests of business in front of those of the general public remind anyone of what we’re going through after doing the same for Wall Street traders and big banks?
In response to Ronald O’Connor, the flu pandemic of 1918 was very interesting in that it’s victims tended to be exactly those people with strong immune systems instead of the very young and the elderly we would have expected. But I agree that we should not panic: our ability to identify and lessen the impact of this flu is far greater than medical care in 1918.

148. Pointman | 05.02.09

Vice President Joe Biden, is a very honest, sincere, person who speaks the truth. I wouldn’t advise my family to travel, or even go to shopping malls during this flu scare. Having siad this, I believe Joe Biden is too samrt to be a government employee. Government employees are strickly politicans and nothing more. Of course, maybe Joe Biden should listen up, “you can learn a lot from a dummy.”

Listen, Jimmy,

I don’t know what sound bite program you’re enrolled in, but somehow you’ve become another creature of media characature.

Biden was right, given the info that we had. New York was said to be an “epicenter.” We were at just below “pandemic.”

I’m the type of guy who doesn’t get flu shots. But at the moment what Biden said fit right in with the available information.

He cares more about people than airline profits. I admire his candor.

151. CAS | 05.02.09

Finally, we have an HONEST politician who was just telling us what he told his own family and we can’t take the truth. He wasn’t telling us NOT to fly or NOT to take the subway ,only that he advised his own family not to do those things. I am so glad Joe Biden has guts enough to say what he thinks and NOT what he should say or what is politically correct and also, hasn’t the media frenzy already already frightened us all more than necessary. You go Joe, keep telling us the TRUTH. It will get through some of our thick skulls.

152. Fred Moolten | 05.02.09

I like Joe Biden. I respect his intelligence, but intelligence and common sense don’t always coincide, and in the case of his comments, they didn’t. At this point, about one American out of every 500,000 appears to be infected with swine flu, and the chance that you will be sitting near one of these on your next airplane flight is miniscule - in fact, if you contract a contagious illness from that flight, it will almost certainly not be swine flu. Zero risk is unattainable, but the risk will be close to zero. Indeed this may change, and probably will, and when both the national totals rise, and individual communities where one lives or works are afflicted with multiple cases, the rationale for avoiding the exposures Biden warns about will become justifiable. The problem with giving this advice prematurely is only in part the disruption of societal functioning (a disruption that itself will threaten the life and health of thousands), and the associated economic damage at a time when additional economic hardship is particularly unwelcome, but also the likelihood that many of us will be tired of exercising precautions at a future time when they are most needed. Unless warnings are matched against reality, they eventually lose their power to warn.

153. Chuck | 05.02.09

You can’t even get a clean pillow or blanket on a flight today…. nor a full can of soda or a meal… in fact, flights aren’t even cleaned between destinations anymore; all because of cutbacks. Do you really think they are changing out the hepa filters?

Joe Biden may have stuck his foot in his mouth as a “politician”, usually more concerned with the economic impact and lobby contributions, but he gave the correct advice as a concerned human being.

If common sense is a “deportable” offense in the U.S. today, then I will personally drive all offenders out of the country…… one trip in a VW bug.

The MSM - there they go again. Trying to stir up trouble by making a big deal out of nothing. Fact is, Biden was asked a question about what he would tell his family. Biden answered the question. Now they are trying to say he was trying to wreck the economy. Give me a break and fire those morons on CNN, ABC, Fox News, CBS and NBC and get them jobs stacking shelves at Wal-Mart.

157. David | 05.02.09

I wouldn’t blame Obama for sending Biden out of the country. This is just one of many times that Biden has put his foot in his mouth. A politician’s ability to speak and use words wisely is pretty important…so how did Biden survive politics as long as he has with a tongue that often runs off without his brain?

I saw one suggestion that Obama set Biden up to be a fall guy. That’s all great and good but Obama had better hurry up and make use of that opportunity or Biden will beat him to it!

158. Vickery | 05.04.09

The media is as guilty of spreading pandemic as any virus, offering up a constant buffet of disinformation and speculation and then reviewing it ceaselessly to get viewers and ratings. Viewers, apparently, are big suckers. Seems like everyone loves to be in on a public media frenzy and if you can get a swipe in at the VP, so much the better! Frankly, what Biden said was inconvenient for the airline industry and slightly hysterical, but that’s what you get when you ask for someone’s personal views with cameras rolling. Of course he should know by now to never share a personal thought and to have a PR script always on file, but people are people. Stop spinning this dumb moment and focus on telling real news that’s actually in need of telling, please. I’m tired of all this pandemic flu coverage.
