Sarah Palin lends beleaguered Glenn Beck a helping a hand

Here's looking at you, Glenn Beck.

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin: Two peas in a pod? You betcha.

After all, the conservative commentator and the conservative former Alaska governor share a similar set of values. Ms. Palin says President Obama is a socialist. Mr. Beck says the president is not only a socialist, but a racist. Beck supported the tea party protests in Rhode Island. Sarah Palin might be moving there. Beck visibly choked up when Sarah Palin appeared on his show. And now Palin has taken to her soapbox of choice – Facebook, natch – to proselytize for Beck.

In a post on her public Facebook profile, Palin offered the following:

FOX News' Glenn Beck is doing an extraordinary job this week walking America behind the scenes of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and outlining who is actually running the White House.
Monday night he asked us to invite one friend to watch; tonight I invite all my friends to watch.
-Sarah Palin

Palin's message comes at a particularly opportune time for Beck. Last month, the television and radio personality told the hosts of Fox & Friends that President Barack Obama has a “deep-seated hatred for white people.... This guy is, I believe, a racist," Beck added, for good measure.

It didn't take long for the uproar to begin. A handful of companies, including Progressive, Geico, and Roche, removed advertising from "The Glenn Beck Program," and a political group called ColorOfChange.org began circulating a petition, asking consumers to boycott Beck’s show.

“Beck is on a campaign to convince the American public that President Obama’s agenda is about serving the needs of black communities at white people’s expense. It’s repulsive, divisive and shouldn’t be on the air. Join us in calling on Beck’s advertisers to stop sponsoring his show,” the petition reads.

Palin, of course, is only the latest to offer her unflagging support for the beleaguered Beck.

Our piece on the proposed boycott brought in a torrent of comments from Monitor readers, including this one, from TL Myers: "This just proves that Glenn Beck was correct when he said 'our right to free speech is being taken away.' I hope for the best for Glenn and back him 100%... I believe also that our right to free speech is being taken away, and I feel there is a 85% chance this comment will simply be deleted."

No such luck, TL.

Are higher taxes inevitable?

Obama made a campaign pledge that he wouldn’t raise taxes on anyone except the very well-to-do. But his options are narrowing.
